Hi and welcome back to Hello Country!

This edition is special for a few reasons, not the least of which is the fact that we will be headed to the polls once again - this time for a Municipal Election on October 24.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE SEPTEMBER 2022

Grey Highlands boasts an unprecedent ed number of candidates for Council this year. The rise in participation is attributed in large degree to the newly formed Grey Highlands Municipal League - a collection of residents with the common goal of in creasing awareness of, and participation in, municipal politics.

It’s been a great pleasure getting to know Elfriede and Anthony Featherstone. Their farm isn’t far from ours and we’ve had the opportunity to sample some of their grassfed & finished beef (call it research).

Never before have I toured a farm, received a live lecture on sustainable farming prac tices and learned about pesticide use and cross-contamination (I wasn’t allowed to get too close to the cows because we have horses at home). It’s been a wonderful learning experience for me, which I have already begun to explain to our boys in the hope that they will one day have a greater appreciation for sustainable farming.

NOTE: at time of press, there was talk of changing the location of this meeting. Meeting times and locations can be con firmed by contacting the Grey Highlands Chamber of info@greyhighlandschamber.comCommerce:

MIND OVER MOTOR 1975 “FERRARI” DINO

I first laid eyes on this particular Dino on a dark, freezing day in Meaford back in De cember 2017. It was sitting in the back of a mechanic’s shop on Hwy 26 among fi breglass boats, trucks and miscellaneous muscle cars - a bright red misfit in Grey County. It had suffered a pretty public carburetor fire years before in Thornbury, and hadn’t run right ever since. It was impressive, but clearly needed a lot of work. It had been refinished in its original colour of <<Rosso Corsa>> and looked great from the outside. Time to be cool and tread carefully then.

When new, this model wasn’t badged “Fer rari”, but rather “Dino” (dee-noh) after Enzo Ferrari’s late son. 308 GT4 denotes a 3 litre V8 engined Gran Turismo with 4 seats. It was styled by the boy genius Marcello Gan dini for the coachbuilder Bertone, and was originally meant to be a Lamborghini, but the design was rejected. A series of coinci dences led to the design being mated with Ferrari mechanicals, and this was the result. For a long time these were misunderstood, but this is a brilliant car.

1975 “Ferrari” Dino 308 GT4

I owned this bright red wedge for a time. It messed with my head and I learned from it.

ROBERT IANTORNO

Yeah, no. I was smitten by the slinky shape, the colour, and by the way it sat on its gold three piece wheels. Fine details like the stainless steel door handles, big MOMO steering wheel, and the detach able little mirror in the glovebox sparked a flurry of synapses in my brain. When I sat in the driver’s seat, the smell of the leather interior, old vinyl, gasoline and just a hint of mildew filled my sinuses and better judgement was out the window. My Southern Italian genes took over, and I was now along for the ride. Here it was, likely my only chance to own a Ferrari, and I had to have it. I pursued the car for

www.hellocountry.ca 11

So with the help of my trusty mechanic Scotty we got the Dino running. Then I tri umphantly drove it twice around the block and sold it. Ciao!

And then it sat, not driven, barely running, on jackstands in my garage for a year. The Ego is a funny thing. There I was, Ferra ri keys in hand, face to face with the very prize I had been pursuing since I was 4 years old, and yet somehow things didn’t add up. I had enjoyed a sojourn as an ap prentice Ferrari mechanic and loved work ing on these machines, but owning this one just didn’t feel right. How could that be? Had I been chasing an evanescence? Why didn’t this bright red wedge make me feel whole? I stayed in this limbo for months until I finally acknowledged that an object, however red or special it may be, will not by itself bring happiness. I like the chase, the experience, I like the machines for what they are and what they represent, but that doesn’t mean that I need to own them to enjoy them. I don’t need to parade on a prancing horse.

4 years, eventually persuading the owner, a gentleman in his 80s, to sell it to me. And then it was all mine.

If you watched any television from the late seventies to the early nineties, particular ly Canadian television, you probably saw Geoff somewhere. His “favourite director of all time” was George Bloomfield, and he shows up in numerous projects with Bloomfield at the helm--- a recurring role in three seasons of “Street Legal”, “Adderly”, “War of the Worlds”, “Neon Rider”, and a double episode of “Due South”. It was the latter which provided Geoff with one of his most treasured memories. The show was shot in the middle of a lake, which required a forty-minute boat ride across Lake Ontar io to the set twice a day. On the way, he was regaled with great stories from the careers

18 Supporting Local in Grey Highlands

After Stratford that year, Geoff returned to Toronto and found work performing a steady stream of roles in theatre, film television and radio. He acted in various productions directed by William Lane for the newly formed Toronto Free Theatre, including the world premiere of George F. Walker’s “Zastrozzi” and the title character in Joe Orton’s “Entertaining Mr. Sloane”. He received a Best Actor Dora in 1981 for his performance in Erika Ritter’s “Automatic Pilot”. Over the course of his career, Geoff maintained a balance between taking roles from both the classical and contemporary repertoire--- from “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “The Country Wife” at Strat ford to “Caesar and Cleopatra” and “Cyra no de Bergerac” at Shaw to “Cloud Nine”, “The Normal Heart”, and “Amadeus” at oth er professional theatres across Canada.

FLESHERTON CALLING GEOFF BOWES,

Like many working stage actors from that era, Geoff supplemented his theatre and television demands with roles in films, from micro to larger scale budgets. It was the era of the tax credit film industry in Canada, and the roles were varied. It did afford him the opportunity to be involved with projects featuring artists such as Cicely Tyson, Farrah Fawcett, Peter Bog danovich, Bruce Dern and Ann Margaret. The role of featured performer in film, al though well-paid, was not as satisfying as his stage work, but Geoff has fond memo ries of his key role in “Fish Hawk”, opposite Will Sampson and directed by Canadian legend, Don Shebib.

Through it all, when he wasn’t on set, Geoff was renovating. It was a skill set he was able to develop as a homeowner, working for contractors, then as a contractor himself. He has recently added writer to his list of accomplishments, telling the entertaining story of his experiences as a renovator in his book, “Open Up the Wall”, available on Amazon. If they ever make a movie based on it, he might even audition for the lead.

When last we saw Geoff he was at the Strat ford Festival in 1975, terror-struck at the edge of the stage awaiting his entrance as the Court Page in Shaw’s “Saint Joan”. It seemed to him that it would take all he had not to lose focus, drop a line or let down his fellow cast members in any way. The show must have gone well because it was over before he knew it and he remembered the words of his friend Barbara Gordon, who told him “You don’t really start listening until three weeks in.” It was only then, he discovered, you could begin to refine the elements of your performance. He must have succeeded in attracting the attention of the director - he was offered the larger role of the Inquisitor, replacing a more ex perienced actor part-way through the run.

of his legendary co-stars - Gordon Pinsent and Douglas Chamberlain. For that, he would have worked for free.

Are YOU an Enterprising Kid?

So, if you see this logo on the side of the road near Ceylon sometime soon, pull over and say hi.

Below is an idea our eldest son, Jaxon, came up with once we moved to Grey Highlands. We’re lucky enough to have a micro-orchard on our property with a hand ful of apple trees. Jaxon (“Jax”) came up with an idea to make Apple Juice and sell it at the side of the road. Kind of like a lemon ade stand...but with apples.

Here’s to supporting all of our Enterprising Kids!

You can follow along as I explain in my own, humble words my initial impressions upon touring Rocklands Market this past August and the opportunity, albeit challenging, to write about such a business without once mentioning its owner.

I can see it all right here in Grey County.

I can see a Christmas Market - an outdoor, snow-covered and torch-lit festival for fam ilies and visitors of all kinds. I can see a Thanksgiving Harvest Festival under a ma jestic canopy of red, yellow, and orange. I can see New Year’s parties, private family gatherings, corporate retreats, and maybe even a campaign thank-you party...

As the days get shorter and cooler, it isn’t as difficult to stay indoors and work. Speaking of working, I remembered something that

September has always felt like a new year to me with summer winding down and kids heading back to school. I have always felt a sense of excitement and I enjoy planning something new that I want to learn or re visiting my goals for the next few months. I also look forward to the local fall fairs hap pening throughout Grey County starting in late August and being held throughout the month of September. Seeing who has placed first in baking, floral, arts and crafts, photography, garden produce, bushels of grain, hay or straw bales, the tallest sun flower or longest zucchini is always fun. Quilts are arranged around the arena along with posters produced by students depict ing safety on the farm. Outside the arena you can watch the 4H cattle and sheep shows, and the truck and tractor pulls draw a large audience. Plus (the best part) talking to people you haven’t seen in a very, very long time!

WORKING FROM A RURAL HOMECINDY

I was raised to follow the 10 command ments but right then and there I was break ing one…. I was coveting my neighbour’s high speed internet connection.

happened 3 few years ago. I was work ing for a client who wanted to have short instructional videos on her website (preCovid when this was still relatively new). We were going to upload a 12 minute vid eo to YouTube and then stream it onto her website. I started to upload the video and watched as the loader was calculating how long it was going to take… 1 hour… 3 hours…. 22 hours! I left my computer alone and just kept watching the progress. Some how the connection was lost and I had to start again. I checked the next morning, and it didn’t appear to be doing anything. Somehow the connection had been lost overnight and I had to upload it again. I de cided to walk my client through the upload process over the phone and see if it was faster for her to upload the video than me. I explained what to do step by step and then said, “Now we just have to wait”. “No, it’s done!” she said. “Pardon? It’s done?? Are you sure?” I questioned. Something must have gone wrong, so I double checked. Sure enough, the video was uploaded to YouTube and ready to publish. What was going to take me 22 hours to upload was done in less than 1 minute.

Autumn is my favourite time to be outside. The mosquitoes have gone away for anoth er year and there is just something about breathing in that cool crisp air. Then of course there is the beauty of the myriad of colours and the rewards of another year’s harvest. During the pandemic I took up walking as a pastime. In no small part, this was because there was nothing open. We are very fortunate here in Grey County to have many county forest tracts available to explore. We also have the Saugeen Conservation Authority Lands, converted rail trails, and of course the Bruce Trail. I learned very early on that good footwear is a must. It is the difference between an enjoyable memory or sore feet and knees. I also like to take a small backpack with a couple bottles of water and a rain poncho, just in case. I always let someone know where I am going and keep my cell phone with me for emergencies. If you are able, I would encourage you to walk regularly. It is not just great physical exercise, it can also have a positive impact on your mental health as well. It’s easy to get started - just put one foot in front of the other.
