PUBLISHER’S NOTE

This year seems to have flown by. I’d like to thank our talented team of Editorial Contributors and our loyal Advertisers for all their support over the past 12 months.

I was inspired by the recent election campaign in Grey Highlands, in which I was a candidate, to challenge myself to be more environmentally conscious with my business. As a result, I’ve decided to kill fewer trees, focus more on digital publishing, and shift toward an all-retail distribution model; thus being able to reach more readers with fewer copies printed. I will list locations where you can pick up the magazine on our Instagram page. It’s my hope that we’ll be able to encourage more readers to support local with this shift and still provide authentic, community-based content.

Thanks for reading and Happy Holidays!

We’re getting closer to the holiday season and all the fun, memories and moments shared with family and friends this time of year brings. Here at the Lakeshore Campus, we’re ready to celebrate the season with our students, faculty, staff and the wider Etobicoke Lakeshore community.

We got into the holiday spirit a bit early this year at Lakeshore with the return of the third annual New Toronto Holiday Market. This is the first Market after several years of pandemic-related cancellations but, judging by the turnout and the great response from the community, it was well worth the wait. We hosted 668 people throughout the day who came together to enjoy crafts, live music, and festive shopping.

Our Student Welcome and Resource Centre building was host to the market that gave the community a chance to visit with friends, have some fun at the free craft station that was hosted by Friends of Sam Smith Park and peruse the variety of local vendors who were selling everything from greeting cards to soap, to original art.

In the spirit of giving back, 100 per cent of the proceeds from vendor table rentals were donated to LAMP Community Health

Centre, to benefit the important work they do in Etobicoke. A total of $955 was donated to LAMP from vendor table fees and donations gathered on the day.

It was gratifying to host this event and witness the excitement it brings to Humber’s Lakeshore Campus after a pandemic hiatus. The holiday spirit is alive, and you can feel the festive energy spread far and wide across the campus.

I know for most folks, this time of year is an exceptionally busy time. As things begin to wind down, I hope this holiday season brings you some peace and relaxation as you enjoy time off with family and friends. What I’ve always loved about the holidays is how they allow us the time to make new memories with loved ones.

For those of you who do have a little free time, why not swing by the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre to check out our exciting new exhibition “Wild About the City: Sharing the Urban Environment with Wildlife.” It is being hosted in the Third Floor Gallery and is a collection of scratchboard, oils, pastels, and acrylics by local artist and Humber College alumna, Lisa Compton.

HUMBER COLLEGE COMMUNITY UPDATE

The art in the exhibition represents the diverse flora and fauna of the Toronto area and highlights the relationships between wildlife and urban spaces. Taking an anthropomorphized perspective, each work will present a unique voice from a subject speaking from its urbanized landscape.

The hope is that those who attend the exhibition will experience another perspective about the animals that are commonly thought to be dangerous or pests and that they will gain a new understanding of the influence of urban expansion on local wildlife.

It runs until January 20, 2023, and you can find out more details at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre website at LakeshoreGrounds.ca

For all our movie buffs, we are excited to announce the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre’s Film History Tour has returned. The latest tour took place on December 5. We look forward to the return of more public tours in the new year.

This tour is so unique, because the Lakeshore Grounds has served as a popular filming location for movies, television shows, and commercials since 1977.

Surprised to hear this? It’s true. Production companies were encouraged by the province to use the area in the years following the closure of the Lakeshore Psychiatric

Hospital and the tradition has continued following the opening of Lakeshore Campus.

You can learn about some of the shows that have been shot there including The Handmaid’s Tale and Designated Survivor. You will also certainly recognize some of the movies filmed on the Lakeshore Grounds including Suicide Squad, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Urban Legends, the Canadian cult classic Strange Brew and various iterations of the Police Academy series including the original.

You can find out more by visiting the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre website at LakeshoreGrounds.ca.

“1988 Alfa Romeo Milano - Madness, Beauty, Love and Discipline”

A short time ago, I drove this one owner, 1988 Alfa Romeo Milano, fell in love and chose not to buy it.

That, dear friends, is discipline. I think about this car every day, but I need to take care of my family and my other responsibilities at this time, and I must be prudent in my decision making.

Of course, there’s nothing prudent at all regarding the Milano itself. That’s the beauty of the thing -it simply dances in the Obscene. The design goes where the viewer isn’t comfortable going. This “Bella Brutta” was designed by the great Ermanno Cressoni, and is considered the last of the real Alfa Romeos. Called the “75” in Europe, it was designed to honour the firm’s 75th anniversary. He called the brutalist styling “La Linea”. So matter of fact. It’s the automotive equivalent of ladies wearing big hair and big shoulder pads on houndstooth blazers with brass buttons. La Linea doesn’t care that you think it’s ugly. Many do. Get over yourself and get out of my way. Beauty doesn’t have to be beautiful, no?

For years, the public has derided this car for being ugly, needlessly complicated, unreliable, weird. Well the public has no idea what they’re on about -let them howl. This car has so many of the ingredients and personality of the finest Italian exotics at a fraction of the cost. It’s an undervalued under appreciated treasure.

The mechanicals are exquisite. I worship this thing because I’ve been around and I know what I’m talking about. The all-aluminum 2.5L 12V V6 is known as “The Busso” after its creator, and it makes the most enthralling snarling noises as it revs. The thing is alive. The power is linear, and it pulls no problem from a rolling stop in 2nd. The shifts are long, but you’ll never miss a gear if you’re confident in what you’re doing. The gearbox is at the rear, straddled by inboard disc brakes, and bearing the torsion of a weird and delightfully tactile suspension. The handling, steering, balance, FEELING is just divine.

This particular Milano was owned and cherished by an Italian gentleman in Mississauga from new. He passed away in August. It only has 108,000km and was his pride and joy. Just being with the car, I could feel this man’s personality. I could hear that the engine needs a valve adjustment (no big deal, I’ve worked on these engines), and there are a few little things that could be addressed, but it’s so honest. A real gem.

It could be my pride and joy, but it’s not. Not now, anyways. Time for my head to reign in my heart. This Milano is proof of the beautiful madness that lives on the other side of my better judgement.
