IN THE COMMUNITY // SKATE WITH SANTA

This year’s Etobicoke Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade was a huge success. We had fantastic weather and the parade route seemed like it was lined with more people than last year. After the Parade, revellers made the short trek toward the Skating Trail in Colonel Samuel Smith Park. The fire was lit, the Christmas carollers were in full swing, and Santa was as busy as he has ever been posing for photos with children, families, and dogs...lots and lots of dogs.

If you had a photo taken with Santa, you can find it in our Special Edition posted online. Email us the photo ID#, and we’ll send you a free 4x6 high-res file that you can print at home or share with friends and family. Special thanks to this year’s Parade Organizing Committee, headed up by Carlos Guerreiro, and also to Eleanor Meli who spearheaded the Skate With Santa event. Both endeavours are run entirely by volunteers. Congratulations for another great Lakeshore Parade and Skate With Santa event.

LONG BRANCH HISTORY // TORONTO’S FIRST HE Are you feeling a bit lethargic or anxious lately? I may have a remedy for you and the answer is literally at your feet. But first a bit of healthy history... In the 1850’s, acclaimed author and naturalist, Henry David Thoreau, asserted his classic prescription of ‘Tonic of Wilderness’ for civilization and its discontents. His book Walden; or, Life in the Woods published in 1854, preempted a worldwide movement of ‘the natural forest benefits’ for good health and wellbeing. Thirty years later in 1883, Thomas John Wilkie, Secretary of the Toronto YMCA, purchased the lush densely forested acreage adjacent to Lake Ontario from James Eastwood for the Long Branch Resort and YMCA Boys camp in South Etobicoke.

10

I am not sure if Wilkie was familiar with Thoreau’s writings but the paralleled logic destined Long Branch Park to become a mini mecca of promoting healthy ‘body, mind and spirit’. Architecturally modelled on structures of Long Branch New Jersey, there was the stunning Japanese Pagoda Hotel, fountain square, private Queen Anne and Jacobean villa rentals, a gymnasium, squash and tennis courts, a dancing and picnic Pavilion, lawn bowling and cricket, swimming, strolling in the woods, and even a Coney Island carousel and a water flume for the children. ‘Toronto’s Favorite Resort’ as it was advertised had all the amenities to encourage physical activity, proper diet (no alcohol), social engagement, and relaxation. But there was more.

EALTH RESORT The most abundant natural and free health asset that Long Branch Park boasted was the surrounding ecotherapeutic forest of majestic Oaks, Ash, Black Walnut, Maple, Pine, and Spruce trees.

feel refreshed and better, it improved their overall immune system, too.

In the 1910’s, real estate developer, Colonel Frederick Burton Robins embraced, too, the tree-rich lands of Long Branch and capitalized on them to promote the health benefits of ‘Pine Beach’ and ‘The Pines’ residential 50foot lots. “A Healthy Home is a Happy Home,” noted Robins.

The familiar fragrance of Long Branch Park in the 1890’s was bathed with the essence of pine and spruce. It smelled like a Christmas tree.

Today there is a plethora of scientific evidence that ‘forest bathing’ (as the Japanese have coined it), is proven to lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduce stress hormone production, boost the immune system, and improve overall feelings of wellbeing. In the last 8 years, Japanese officials spent about $4 million studying the physiological and psychological effects of forests and trees. Based on 48 therapy forest trails, the Nippon Medical School in Tokyo measured the activity of human natural killer (NK) cells in the immune system before and after exposure to the woods. Theses cells provide rapid response to viral-infected cells and respond to tumor formation and are associated with improving the immune system and cancer prevention. At the end of the study, the trial participants had significant increases in NK cell activity and production.

Specific trees give off different types of eco-therapeutic aerosols and with corresponding health benefits.

Internationally celebrated Ontario Botanist, Diana Beresford-Kroeger noted in her book, The Global Forest, the Pinus specie’s scent properties. “The worldwide use of Pine scents, oils and extracts in Health Spa’s is fortified with scientific healthy benefits,” writes Beresford-Kroeger. “For instance, on a sweltering summer day the pine tree will emit an odor that is detected at ground level. This scent is a medicinal mixture of various esters of pinosylvin. In other words, the pinosylvin acts as a natural antibiotic, helps the process of breathing (hence the feeling of fresh air) and is a mild narcotic. These natural pine aerosols have an anesthetic effect on the body, bringing on relaxation and peace of mind,” Beresford- Kroeger asserts.

Trees emit various essential oils in aerosol form. Generally called ‘phytoncide’, these oils protect the trees from germs and insects. So when visitors of the Long Branch Park strolled about or went exploring in the adjacent woods, their inhaling of the phytoncide didn’t just make them Shining a Light on Local Businesses Since 2015

FORWARD // LET THERE BE LIGHT My wife and I once went to a large Christmas dinner. My wife, the hugger she is, got up to greet someone and placed her napkin on the table and gave them a hug. The spot on the table she chose was also where the candle was. Four-foot flames, 4 glasses of water, and a lot of laughter, the flames were doused out. I had two thoughts. First, that’s why I never hug. Hugging causes fires. Second, I thought the flames were fitting because after all, it’s Christmas; and the story of Christmas is all about light! Everywhere we’re stringing up Christmas lights all around us. I think most of us love a great movie. In making those great movies come to life they rest on the shoulders of the one who controls the light, the Cinematographer. The lighting sets how the shot will look to tell the story. So what I want to tell you today is that the most important part to the Christmas story is the lighting. What I want to say is that the story of Christmas wouldn’t be what it is if it wasn’t for the light. In the Gospel of John, the writer doesn’t start with Shepherds or mangers. He begins with the significance of Jesus’ birth. John remembered that Jesus was born at a time when it was very, very dark. It says, “In Him is life and that life was the light of all mankind (you). The light shines in the darkness, and darkness has not overcome it.” The Christmas story tells us that no matter

what happens in this life; no matter what we face, no matter how deep the heartache, no matter how extreme the fear, no matter how deep the depression, there is a light that shines in darkness and there is no amount of darkness that can put it out. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus is the Cinematographer of Christmas. Join me Dec 24th for our Candle Light Christmas!

STORYTELLING // THOSE PRIMITIVE ANGELS ‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la, la la la la! All your family is coming to visit, fa la la la la, la la la la! The office potluck, drunk-anddaring, fa la la la la la la la laaaaaaaa! Why are you crying, kind heart? Joy to the world, dashing through the snow – ‘member? You’re a people person, master communicator, joke teller, buffet raider. What’s the hoho problem? Why are so many of us exhausted and overwhelmed by the time the Holidays roar to our door and unleash clown cars packed with family and friends? Because some of those clowns – let’s call them primitive angels – tell stories that push buttons. That turn smiles upside down. Flip over tables. Make the family turkey fly. (True story.) Here’s a tip for living a better storyline when primitive angels fly down the chimney and start squawking at your table, under your tree, or inside your heart. Get present (pre-sent). Long before you hear your doorbell ring or Great Uncle Kevin yells for another drink, get clear about how you want your guests to Feel, Think and Act. Most of us want our guests to feel welcome. To think we’re organized, sophisticated, witty, and gorgeous. (Oh, admit it!) We want family and friends to express gratitude and praise for our hospitality. But as in life, you win some and you lose some. Not everyone is going to behave the way you want. But you know what? By taking just two minutes mind-dumping how you want people to feel, think and act, you’re setting a powerful field of intention and calm. While the clowns are sowing war, you’re reaping Peace because you have a peace plan, baby!

You’re a kind heart with good intentions living a sweet life story with enough sunshine and hope for everyone. WELLNESS // FIND YOUR BALANCE The Holiday season is almost behind us, so what comes next? Traditionally, the beginning of January is an opportunity to start something new. Often, we focus on how to improve our fitness or health, or make some commitment to give up something we consider a vice. What if this time, our commitment to our health involves something gentle and cleansing with incredible benefits? With all the Holiday stress our bodies experience, our colon takes a beating; and this incredible organ continues to support us even when it needs a lot of support itself. Whether your colon is like a late-night disco that never closes, or in a deep coma, it’s speaking to you and telling you loudly what it needs. So, what are the damaging effects of ignoring your colon’s cries? Malabsorption Fatigue and lethargy Allergies Loss of focus and cognitive function Auto-immune disorders Compromised immune system And the list continues. How can we show our colon the love it so badly deserves? Here are a few simple tips you can take to get you on the road to improved health.

S O U T H

1. Increase your intake of clean filtered water, room temperature is best

ALLEN (A.J.) PAYNE & ADRIANNE SZABO

2. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables – fibre is a key element to good elimination

3. Reduce your intake of dehydrating beverages such as coffee, black tea, and alcohol - eat whole foods and avoid processed foods and dairy (if you have sensitivities). Incorporate colon irrigation into your regular health routine.

These steps are simple to incorporate into your life. The addition of colon irrigation is something to consider when you want to support your colon a bit more than with diet and exercise alone. Try it, it could change your life.

FOOD & DRINK // PLANT-BASED GRILLING

It’s a common misconception that if you don’t eat meat, you don’t need a barbecue. We’re here to tell you, you couldn’t be more wrong!

If you want something to wow the crowd, try out some veggie skewers and mix and match with what’s in season. They’re a great way to infuse different flavours and colours into your dish without having to break the bank. Throw in some marinated tofu for some added protein. Like chicken, tofu takes on the flavour of whatever you’re grilling with, so be sure to give it a good marinade or rub for some added punch!

Whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, or just a griller looking to cut back on their cholesterol and trans fat, you can grill a huge variety of flavourful meals on a barbecue without ever heading to the meat section. FIRST CAPITAL REALTY’S IDEA FAIR #2 FOR HUM

On Wednesday, November 21st, nearly 400 residents dropped by the Polish Hall at 2282 Lake Shore Blvd. West to mingle with representatives from First Capital Realty and talk about the future of the former Mr. Christie’s property east of Park Lawn Road. This was the second “Idea Fair” hosted by First Capital; the first was held in February 2018, where more than 600 interested residents came out to learn about First Capital and their ideas for future development of the Humber Bay Shores community. The purpose of Idea Fair #2 was to showcase what was heard from area residents at the first Idea Fair, share First Capital’s aspirations for the site and introduce the new internationally renowned Master Planners engaged to create a new vision for the 28-acre property.

about what they want and don’t want to see in their community. These views are summed up into a collection of ‘Big Ideas’ that include: a transit hub with a new GO Station at Park Lawn, higher-end shops and restaurants, amenities like parks and meeting places, jobs and a mix of housing – including the affordable kind that is in short supply in today’s Toronto. “We have our own thoughts about what could happen here, but it is important to hear from our neighbours first because our company plans on making significant investments in this community and are determined to be a big part of its future success,” said Jodi Shpigel, the Senior Vice-President of Development of First Capital Realty. LIFE’S UNDERTAKINGS // IF TOMORROW NEVER By the time the Holidays roll around, a lot of us feel as if we’ve been rolled over by mayhem, mischief, and malls. Some people love putting up Christmas lights and the Christmas tree while others wish they could unplug and hide in the dark. Can you still qualify as a positive person if you dread the Holidays? Absolutely, says funeral director Brad Jones. Whether you’re Santa or Scrooge, there is always the potential for sprinkling magic into the merry season. The secret is staying open to what truly inspires us to get up in the morning all year long.

love a new snowfall. But first, before I can happily step into new beginnings, I need to grieve and honour the cruel fact that someone I love is, yet again, not here to see a new year. I know I am not alone in my feelings of loss. I also know my mother’s death has fueled my fierce advocacy for grief education and showing patience mingled with kindness toward people clearly, if not visibly, wounded because they are mourning.

For those of us facing a death anniversary, the morning signals the start of a long, sad day of mourning. If everything around us is cheerful and bright because of the Holiday season, our dark mood can feel especially selfish and inappropriate. New Year’s Eve is not my favourite. I do okay with Christmas parties, tree decorating and eating too much. But by the time young people start talking about their New Year’s Eve plans, I feel the familiar pang of dread.

I don’t hate the holiday. I don’t bother to “hate” that my mom died on the 31st or rage against the fact that she died so young. As a funeral director, I know first-hand what hating reality can do to beautiful people and close-knit families.

I imagine her knowing and loving all six of my children. ... Brad Jones is president and owner of locally-owned, commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd) in Etobicoke. This Christmas he’ll gather with family and friends present, absent and forever missed.

My dad felt he could say goodbye to his wife, my mother, with happiness because she died knowing she was loved. My father told her “I love you” every day and that tradition has become my mother’s legacy.

May your Holidays be filled with faith, love, and hope.

If tomorrow never comes, and one day it will for all of us, may the people you love and cherish know you loved them. Say the words. Say the words out loud and with feeling – “I love you” – because in the end, giving love and being loved is what gets us up in the morning 365 days a year.

You’re welcome to contact Brad by calling 416.259.3705 or reach him by email at: BradJones@RidleyFuneralHome.com

Love is what gets us through the mourning, too.

COVER STORY // REAL SUCCESS STORIES FROM C It’s been a year since CKO Kickboxing opened its first Canadian franchise right here in Long Branch. If you recall, we featured them on the cover of our last Health & Wellness edition.

D E C

In that time, Owners Tina Teeter and Michael Camphausen, have had the opportunity to guide their members through their own journey toward transformation - both physical as well as emotional. Membership at CKO has risen substantially and, based on the testimonials of their members, it’s not a surprise.

The successful results their members have achieved over the past year are proof that the CKO fitness philosophy really works. Take, for instance, the following success stories from local members at CKO Toronto...

MELANIE “Being diagnosed with pre-diabetes two years in a row was the push I needed to finally get healthy after too many years to count of not taking care of myself. I began my health journey in February 2018 by hiring a personal trainer and drastically changing the way I ate. Whole foods and smaller portions became my new normal. As did being active daily, including running my first 5K in October 2018. By July 2018, after losing 80 pounds, I decided to search for an additional fitness outlet to introduce into my new active way of life. By chance, CKO Kickboxing was close to my work so I signed up for a free class and I was immediately hooked!

Since joining CKO, I have dropped another 50 pounds; but what I have gained is so much more significant: strength, endurance, energy, and perhaps most importantly, confidence. Classes are fun, challenging and they always vary. The instructors are knowledgeable, entertaining, encouraging and friendly. It has been an amazing ride so far and, while not always easy, I look forward to continuing to challenge myself while having fun at the same time.

RECIPE // ROASTED SQUASH & KALE SALAD

By: Adrianne Szabo Co-owner of Monkey Tree Fitness & Wellness Here’s a healthy winter recipe I love...Roasted Squash & Winter Kale Salad. Ingredients 1 medium sized squash (Delicata, acorn, butternut or buttercup) 1 large bunch of green leaf or dinosaur kale (stems and ribs removed) 1 large caramelized onion (sweet or red) – cook sliced onion in a pan with oil and butter to caramelize ½ cup of feta (crumbled) ¼ cup of dried berries of your choice (cranberry, blueberries or cherries) ¼ cup pumpkin seeds; unsalted or salted ½ cup roasted pistachio or roasted / spiced nuts of your choice

1 tblsp ground grey or Himalayan salt 1 tblsp ground black pepper 1 tblsp of raw honey or maple syrup

Dressing 2 turns of fresh pressed oil of your choice; approx. 4 tblsp (Avocado, EVOO, pumpkin seed or hemp seed) 2 tblsp of acid (apple cider vinegar or fresh squeezed lemon juice)

Toss kale in oil and let sit to soften. When squash is roasted, add to kale and add remaining ingredients and mix together until well blended. Serve with your favourite protein or just have it for a healthy lunch.

26

Preheat the oven to 400° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Peel the squash and cube (1” size). Toss in salt and pepper and oil and roast in the oven to desired firmness for the squash you chose. This can be between 15-30 minutes depending on the squash. Test with fork.

MOM LIFE // SILENCING SQUEAKY FLOORS We live in a bungalow built in 1940. It’s a lovely little home with some original finishes, including the hardwood floors on the main level. Before we had Luke, my husband and I never noticed just how squeaky the floors were. But after we had a baby to keep from waking, we found ourselves tip-toeing around the house like a couple of ninja ballet dancers. It seemed like each step we took, the floors would creak so loudly that Luke would wake crying...and I’d be up with him all through the night... again! My husband’s response: do nothing. “The baby will just have to get used to it,” he said. “It will make him tougher.” Typical, right? He’s not waking up every hour or two. Something had to be done. We had to fix these floors. My sanity hung in the balance. So, I did what most Moms of newborns do when they should be sleeping...I researched! I was determined to fix these old floors. I had heard that it was impossible. “You have to go in from underneath,” people told us. “Your basement ceiling will be

destroyed,” they said. “No one can fix squeaky floors!” I grew more determined. Finally, I came across a local company, called Squeak Knights. They claimed to have a much less invasive method of fixing squeaky floors. In fact, they do it from the top-down, not from underneath. I used my powers of persuasion and convinced my husband that spending a bit of money on fixing the floors would go a long way toward a mutually agreeable existence. Moms...you know what I’m talking about. What’s that old saying again? A happy wife is a happy life... We booked a consultation with the owner, Lev Remennik. He spent about three hours explaining in detail the process he uses to remedy squeaky floors. He walked around the main level of our home and identified all the trouble spots - pretty much a pathway worn over the last 78 years from the bedrooms to the bathroom, and a loop from the kitchen to the TV and back toward the bathroom. No wonder we couldn’t step anywhere without making noise. The solution: three days of drilling fine holes and filling them with an adhesive to stop the floors from moving when stepped on. When I say fine holes, I mean exactly that. When the work was done, we couldn’t Cont’d on page 28

see the holes at all. In fact, we almost didn’t notice how silent the floors were once the work was complete. Lev’s crew did it! We actually had quiet floors. The prospect of sleep was on the horizon.

We scrapped our plans to install a zip line to the Baby’s room. Now we just walk there like normal people.

With all the baby strollers I see along Lake Shore these days, I’m guessing I’m not the only Mom out there struggling with squeaky floors. Here’s Lev’s number. His work has had an enormously positive impact on our lives. I happily share it with you. Now, if Lev can only cure my husband’s snoring...

KID LIFE // MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Hello, Readers. If this was YouTube, I would call you my Subscribers, but my Daddy won’t let me have my own channel. So he gave me some space in his magazine, instead. So here goes... This month, I’d like to talk to you about my New Year’s resolutions. I don’t really know what that word means, but my Mommy says it’s a promise you make to yourself so you can make your life better in the new year. So, with a little bit of input (that means help) from my parents, these are my New Year’s resolutions...
