ANNIVERSARY MARIE CURTIS PARK IS 60! She then harnessed $1.6 million to clear and expropriate the Etobicoke Flats and again straighten, fill in the lagoon and secondary channels of the Etobicoke Creek and join the island between the channels to the west bank mainland. The drive into Marie Curtis west side still bares the name, Island Road. The 35-acre reclaimed land would become a new park and fall within the jurisdiction of the Toronto Conservation and Parks Authority. In 1959 the Park opened in honour and recognition of Reeve Marie Curtis. Marie Curtis remained the Reeve of Long branch until 1963. Marie Curtis Park Opened in 1954 With less than a year into her term as the Reeve of Long Branch, Marie Curtis pulled all the stops and resources to find shelter, safety, and food for all the displaced residents of Long Branch after Hurricane Hazel ravaged South Etobicoke in 1954. Curtis was the first and only woman to become Reeve of Long Branch.

60 years later, families from across Long Branch and beyond enjoy the Marie Curtis Park’s beauty, as do countless species of birds, animals, and amphibians. Photo Credit: City of Toronto Archives

COMMUNITY OFFICE 146 Women’s home in terms of what goes on behind the scenes and where I spend a lot of my days working. It’s also a great place for us to hold our events and workshops that are lead by myself and our leaders in the West end of Toronto/Etobicoke. We come together regularly to network, socialize, learn and grow with each other, and Office146 provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere, not to mention a community of forward-thinking people. If you’re a woman in business and looking to network in the most authentic, heart centred way with like minded entrepreneurs, you’re invited to join us for our events and grow your business with us!

NATALIE COLALILLO

Founder, Happy Healthy Women I caught up with one of our new members, Natalie Colalillo, Long Branch resident and Founder & CEO of Happy Healthy Women, to see what she thinks of Office146.

natalie@happyhealthywomen.ca www.happyhealthywomen.ca

My husband and I were driving down Thirtieth Street toward Lake Shore one day a few months ago when I noticed the sign for a new co-working space, called Office 146. “There’s a new co-working space in our hood!” I said enthusiastically. As the Founder & CEO of an Entrepreneurial Women’s Community called Happy Healthy Women, and a new-ish resident of Long Branch, I immediately wanted to know more. To me, community is everything. In person connection is the basis of our Canada-wide collective and the foundation on which so many businesses are built by our members. We believe happiness, health and success are one full circle, yet the isolation so many solo-preneurs face can be really depleting of all three of those things. Having a space for business owners at all levels to work, collaborate, and be inspired by others can significantly improve our mindsets and, as a result, our businesses. Office146 has become Happy Healthy 10

UPDATE ON MOYA FINANCIAL’S BEEHIVES

Moya Financial is continuing to spread awareness of the importance of urban pollinators. Beekeepers from Alvéole regularly inspect their hives to make sure everything is in top shape and ready for the smooth honey harvest in September. Now up to sixty thousand little workers are set out on a daily quest to take food back to the colony to ensure its development. While working, they help garden pollination in our community. Unlike wasps, they are not aggressive and will sting only as a last resort – they die after they sting. Moya Financial staff demonstrated how honey bees are not interested in humans during the installation of the beehives last month. You’re welcome to stop by their Main Branch at 747 Brown’s Line and check the hives. Bees are not threatening, but you should always bee careful around the hive! MOYA FINANCIAL MAIN BRANCH

INSPIRATION TAKE THE HITS

MATTHEW DOUGLAS Pastor, West Edge Church

Outside of the Bible, nothing has motivated me more to live a courageous life than the Rocky series. Is there anything more captivating to humanity than an underdog? Maybe cat videos, but other than that I can’t think of anything. Ironically, the worst Rocky movie (Rocky IV) has the most powerful dialogue. Rocky is talking to his son out on the street who’s life isn’t going in the direction he dreams. In my best Sly Stallone impression... “Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now, if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying, ‘you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody.’ Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You’re better than that! I’m always gonna love you, no matter what. No matter what happens. You’re my son and you’re my blood. You’re the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, you ain’t gonna have a life.” 12

Please give me the grace to put on my pastor hat for a moment. For me, when I learned that there was a God that not only loved me but believed in me it gave me the courage to believe that I can make a difference. Life can hit hard, really hard! But so can you. You were created to make an impact. If life is not going in the direction of your dreams and you’re down for the count, I pray you hear me banging on the mat screaming, “GET UP!” You got one more round, I believe in you. ARTS & CULTURE CONNECTING WITH MUSIC Hi, South Etobicoke! Lakeshore Arts (LSA) is a not-for-profit, charitable arts organization that has been serving the community for over 26 years, and we’re excited to share our love of arts and culture with you in this new monthly editorial column. LSA is proud to be among the leading organizations in this area dedicated to providing opportunities for meaningful arts engagement for all ages. MIMICO ADRIAN COIMBRA, REALTOR This month, I’m interviewing my partner in life and work; Adrian Coimbra. First and foremost, all of his clients (including me) would say he’s the most patient guy you will ever work with and knows how to get a deal done! He is extremely hard working. Whether it’s previewing homes in advance for clients, logistically planning listings, installing light fixtures, painting, walking clients’ dogs; you name it, he’s probably done it! Here are a few questions I asked him about the biz and what it’s like working with me... Tell everyone how long you have lived in Mimico and what your favourite thing is about our neighbourhood? I have been living here since I first met you in 2003 and have never been happier :) This area has everything anyone could need within the city but has that small town feel. There are so many parks, restaurants and amenities you can walk to within minutes. And, it’s literally perfect for families! There are over 40 children under 10 years old within 2 blocks of our home which is awesome for our boys! We have made some amazing friends here over the years.

Sales Representative Royal LePage Signature Realty www.adrianandrea.com / 416-566-7089

How long have you been working in Real Estate? What do you love about the biz? I have been a Realtor for 12+ years now. I love making my clients happy. I love the negotiation process. It’s weird to say, but I love the stress of it, too :) What’s it like working with me? I can honestly say it’s been a game changer. I can now focus on the parts I love about the business while you tackle the advertising, social media and admin side of the things. It’s amazing that we can attend events and meet clients together. It’s a good balance... ALDERWOOD A TASTE OF CUBA AWAITS Is Che Guevara really dead? Yes, but the Mojito lives on. That’s right. The classic Cuban cocktail, sans alcohol, is alive and well at La Crema Cafe. Voted the most refreshing summer drink by the people who take summer drinks really, really seriously, La Crema’s Mojito comes with a bit of a twist (a secret one, of course). Ask owner, Andrei Novakovskiy, what pairs best with this new favourite. He has a lot of new tasty items from which to choose. Like all good things, La Crema’s Mojito won’t last forever. In fact, Bay Street analysts project it will be phased out before Labour Day. COVER STORY A ONE-QUESTION INTERVIEW WITH As we head into a federal election this fall, I had one question to ask James Maloney, MP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore. What have been some of the biggest accomplishments of this government? Ever gracious, here is James’ reply... First of all, I would like to thank all the residents of Etobicoke-Lakeshore for the honour of representing them in the House of Commons over the last four years. It has been an enormous privilege to have been brought into the lives of so many people in our community, to hear your stories, to help fix problems where I can and to be your voice in Ottawa and to share your views in the decision-making process on the key issues facing our country. You asked me about accomplishments and I have to approach that in two ways. First of all, there is the macro or big picture. I could not be more proud of the basic philosophy that has been the underlying thrust for all that we have done in Ottawa over the last four years. We are a government that is there to make people’s lives better. We are a government of stewardship and investment in Canadians. We are a government that is willing to take risks and are not wedded to the way things were done before because those traditions do not apply to new problems we face. For example, the threat to the environment now is more real than ever and we need to deal with it. Pretending it doesn’t exist or ignoring the science which is based in fact and evidence not belief, but fact, is just wrong and irresponsible. Has it meant making difficult decisions? Yes, but tackling climate change has to be done and that overriding principle of stewardship that shapes this government extends to stewardship for the planet we live on. We have made decisions that both help the environment all the while providing individuals with the opportunity to do their part. Playing a leadership role not only is the right thing to do but it will allow Canadian businesses to seize the opportunities abroad in the growing global demand for green, clean technology. 16

We are a government that is not afraid to experiment and innovate because we know we need to be focused on the future. In fact, we have invested in innovation and in cutting-edge technology. That, too, is part of keeping our eye on the future. However, it also has meant being responsible on the economic front. We stayed the course on being responsible and I think the recent International Monetary Fund report on Canada says it all. The IMF affirmed the success of our investment in Canadians. Canada is now home to one of the strongest economies in the G7, with the lowest unemployment rate in 40 years. The IMF also recognized our efforts to boost productivity growth, linking it to federal government actions that help make Canadian businesses more competitive and give Canadian workers more confidence about the future. These include renewing the North American Free Trade Agreement, opening the Canada Infrastructure Bank, and introducing new incentives to drive business investment and create more good, well-paying jobs. Canada’s financial sector is also functioning well, supported by a strong regulatory and supervisory

JAMES MALONEY, MP

By: Roger Tumminieri can be good global citizens because that makes us better at home. That is at the macro level. However, how has that translated to every-day decisions? How has that philosophy reflected in the day-to-day lives of Etobicoke-Lakeshore residents? For me, it is in being able to see the priorities of different communities and to respond to their needs. When a mother can’t feed her children or afford rent, her priorities are different than that small business entrepreneur looking for a helping hand to get into new markets. How about the senior looking to get out in the community for friendship and fellowship? There are students, innovators and dreamers. We help them all.

JAMES MALONEY

system. This is very good news and proves our federal government is on the right track. Canada is expected to be the second fastest-growing G7 economy in 2019, and tied for the fastest growing in 2020. Canada also has the lowest net debt-to-GDP (gross domestic product) ratio among G7 countries. What great news for us as a nation and for our community. Being good stewards with the economy means we can support all the priorities for our government. And when things get complicated as they do, when you are guided by the overriding philosophy of doing things best for the collective good, then good decisions are made. Speaking of NAFTA, I look at the incredible work our government has done in terms of defending Canada. The Hon. Chrystia Freeland was unbelievable and relentless in defending our interests in NAFTA negotiations. We are curious about the world around us and the world we live in. We look at what happens around the world and when we see injustices we try to help fix them. We

Supporting community organizations, community centres, local infrastructure projects and, of course, programs that help people’s lives like the Canada Child Benefit, increased Guaranteed Income Supplements and OAS for seniors, student programs and the National Housing Strategy are part of the government’s accomplishments. Small business programs including lowering their tax rate helps both the communities they work and live in and helps them in the bigger picture. There is health care, national pharmacare that we want to implement, there is helping those in crisis with the newly funded national suicide hotline. I could go on but it is about helping make the lives of our neighbours better and lending them a hand when they need it. It is about supporting the dreams of businesses and their invigorating entrepreneurial spirit. It is about celebrating our diversity which ultimately makes us stronger as a society. We need business, we need social infrastructure, we need diversity and we need compassion. We need innovation. I believe our vision has delivered on these priorities and so much more. Personal Chef & Owner, My Sweet Beet

Currently, we are enjoying the long days of summer with hardly a thought of the fall, but the start of new beginnings is just around the corner for recent high school graduates who are off to college and university for the first time in September. Living away from home and having to cook for themselves, your kids may not have experience in the kitchen, but learning a few tricks and simple recipes goes a long way to feeling empowered, in charge of their lives, and comes with many the health benefits. ROYAL MEATS BAR/BEQUE 710 Kipling Ave / 416-251-1144 www.royalmeats.ca

A few tips can go a long way to instilling healthy habits: 1) Plan your meals and make extra for leftovers. 2) Make a list, and don’t go to the grocery store without one or you will end up buying things you don’t need. 3) Get yourself a crockpot, where you can add everything, go to classes and by the time you are back its ready for you. 4) Cook with roommates, learn together and split costs. My Sweet Beet offers fun and interactive cooking classes that teach the basics or add more skills to your repertoire. Your kids will be able to easily whip up dinners and work with recipes to start their year off right.

OPENING A CAFE IS EASY, RIGHT?... I thought opening a cafe would be easy but it did come with its challenges. The process from signing the lease to actually opening took about 10 months, which was longer than expected. It took us a few months to design the cafe and then we had to apply for the permits (to convert it from a bakery to cafe with seating), which took another few months to receive. The waiting was frustrating because you can’t really force the council to approve the permits faster. And then finding contractors to do the work, trying to stay on budget, and then once renovations started, more work was needed since it was an older building (like rotted wood underneath the tiles that needs to be replaced before putting down new ones). When I first decided to open a cafe, I wanted to do an all day brunch - avocado toast, poached eggs, salad bowls. But when I found this place and it was already set it up for baking, I had to change my original plan and modified it to baked goods. I wasn’t too upset because not many places are doing Australian sweets and that we would still stand out. Even though I would like to eventually revisit adding the other items, the whole kitchen layout would have to be changed as everything is arranged for baking. One of the things I’m grateful for is having friends in the industry. I’m able to discuss any questions or concerns that I have with them, as they’ve been in the coffee industry much longer than me. Like when deciding whether to open earlier and later - I noticed it didn’t make much of a difference beginning of the week but later in the week it did. Talking to them made me feel comfortable about my decision. Propeller has been great with us. They’re always coming by to train staff - whether a new hire or we just need a refresher on latte art. This makes sure all our drinks are consistent between the different staff and shifts.

HUMBER LAKESHORE WHAT’S ON CAMPUS Mimico:

(Once) Abundant with Wild Pigeons As is well-known by residents of the Etobicoke Lakeshore community, Mimico derived its name from the Ojibwe word, omiimiikaa, meaning ‘abundant with Wild Pigeons’ – the bird even appeared atop the crest that was adopted by the Town. In more recent years, the image of the Passenger Pigeon has appeared in plays, short stories, murals, and logos that aim to represent the community in various ways. Over the years, the story of the Passenger Pigeon has become more than the root of a name but has come to serve as a symbol for the Lakeshore communities. Before being hunted into extinction, the Wild Pigeon – or Passenger Pigeon – was the most numerous bird in North America with population estimates ranging into the billions. Descriptions of the flocks arriving overhead compared the experience to an eclipse darkening the skies; when they nested, the sheer weight of the birds accumulating would break the branches in the

20

trees. The giant flocks migrated from the southern United States to the Great Lakes region annually, often nesting or roosting in the Etobicoke Lakeshore communities. But it has been in their extinction that the birds have truly left their mark on the community. The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre is currently exploring the stories of the Passenger Pigeon and their meaning in the local community through an exhibit, In the Wake of the Passenger Pigeon, and a series of monthly events. Free until Sept. 28, 2019.

FAMILY LIFE GETTING READY FOR WINTER?! I know it seems early to be thinking about buying winter coats, but have you ever tried buying one in October? The pickings are slim. And they just don’t sell winter coats. There will be literally thousands of pieces of outerwear, boots, hats, mitts, and more that have been accumulating since last winter. Everything is on racks outside under tents at their Etobicoke store located on Islington, just north of The Queensway.

JESSICA TUMMINIERI Wife of the Publisher

I can’t believe I’m thinking about winter during a heat wave. But if I don’t think ahead to getting a great deal on winter coats for the boys, who will? I know my husband is probably thinking 5 minutes ahead (if that), not 5 months. He calls it “living in the moment.” So, where do I go in August to buy clothes for December? Simple: Once Upon A Child Etobicoke. I’ve been shopping there for years for Jaxon and now I buy pretty much all of Luke’s clothes and even toys there. I just makes sense. They’re growing so quickly, I feel like I’d just be throwing our money away buying new clothes for them every few months. The selection is great and the deals are amazing.

If that’s not enough, they’ll pay cash on the spot for kids’ stuff. So if your children are gentle on their clothes and toys (unfortunately, ours are not), bring them with you and see how much money you can get. I’ve marked the date on our calendar. Even my husband is looking forward to going. He doesn’t even like shopping, but he loves to save money! Who knows, by the time you’re done shopping, you may actually have a few extra bucks in your pocket. ONCE UPON A CHILD ETOBICOKE

This month I collaborated (my Daddy says that means “worked together”) with my baby brother, Luke, to test out the ice cream at Ed’s Real Scoop in Mimico. This was a very difficult assignment, but since I’m an ice cream-eating veteran, I knew we’d be up to the task.

In the end, I went home to write this article and Luke built an entire swing set in the backyard by himself! ED’S REAL SCOOP - MIMICO 2370 Lakeshore Blvd W / 416-259-9595

I tried the Burnt Marshmallow first, then the Vanilla Bean, followed by the Pistachio Gelato, and last but not least (I mean this literally, because I tried SO many more flavours), a Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich. I was so happy and “hopped up,” as Mommy would say, that I didn’t even notice Luke going to town on the gelato. This kid can eat! The fact that he only has 6 teeth didn’t stop him from chowing down on four of Ed’s famous take-home pints of ice cream. At one point, Mark (he’s the owner and the luckiest man in the world) looked at Daddy as if to say, “Ah...maybe we should cut this kid off.”

LIFE’S UNDERTAKINGS GOOD GATEKEEPER According to the forces of disintermediation, I am a gatekeeper; to receive my services and products you must speak with me or my staff. Worse? You are forced to come to my bricks-and-mortar funeral home! When I first started out in this industry, I never thought I’d own a funeral home (I do) and I never thought we’d go out of fashion (we have). But there’s really no way to fully silence funeral directors from the service-delivery conversation, no matter what the innovation fairies say. Dealing with death demands communication, collaboration, creativity, clarity and compassion. Since time began, death has always needed people backstage doing the physical work (me) and in pews doing the emotional and spiritual work (you). And what’s the work of the star featured on centre stage? When the deceased’s body Owner, Ridley Funeral Home is in attendance at his or her funeral – increasingly uncommon, true – that loved one shines light into the darkness of dying and Uber, Airbnb, Amazon and Netflix are a lot death. more than successful and profitable companies. I like Netflix just as much as the next person. You see, I have a role to play in your family’s And I’m likely just as conflicted about the plot. (A man can dream, right?) And while I enjoy the irony around the popularity of doing things we were told never to do – get into cars with strangers (Uber), sleep over at a stranger’s house (Airbnb) – I lose my sense of humour when families are assured they can “do” death without help or guidance.

No where is this more evident than the fire burning bright in the realm of “direct cremation” or discount, basic cremation. No service, no help, no problem. Dealing with death this way saddens me and diminishes our humanity as a whole.

Decades ago the funeral industry watched (and worried) about the growing popularity of cremation over burial. Although we don’t get a lot of credit for being innovative, the funeral industry did adapt to consumer demand. Today, grieving families can create whatever kind of goodbye they wish and on whatever budget and timeline they desire. But while funeral service has changed, the needs of the broken-hearted have not. With all the change over the past 50 years, I am most proud of the funeral directors, the really good ones who care, who’ve defied market trends and kept their doors open. Many of us have refused to step aside as death’s gatekeeper because we are committed to protecting and shielding our most valuable asset: grieving families. If you’re rolling your eyes, that’s okay. You’ve likely encountered the same commission-run, factory-style, franchised funeral home I detest, too. You ask... We Clean It!

The best funeral directors do what they do because of you. One way or another, the last funeral director you’ve encountered, irrespective of how old or young they were, is at work because they believe you need help dealing with the death of someone you love. For me, I stand tall as death’s gatekeeper. I know I’m in good company and run a good company.

Before summer is over, it is a good time to take five minutes to connect with yourself. Take some time to go back to that notebook, that note on your phone, that piece of paper where you wrote down your summer intention. What was your goal? What did you want to achieve? Are you fully immersed in that goal? Have you started? Is it time to review that goal and give it a twist? Whatever the stage you are on, it is emotionally healthy and fulfilling to take time to re-assess your goals and expectations before the deadline finds you.
