Vietnam has been experiencing a surge in energy demand due to its rising prosperity and expanding commercial activities. The nation has one of the fastest power consumption growth rates in Asia with a growth of 1012% expected yearly through to 2030. Vietnam’s installed power-generation capacity stood at approximately 69GW as of 2020 and is expected to more than double, to over 150GW by 2030, according to the recently approved Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8).
The plan states that almost a third of the country’s power generation in 2030 is to be met with renewables, excluding hydropower. Targets of 21.88GW and 6GW have been set for onshore and offshore wind respectively, while solar capacity is expected to hit 12.84GW (excluding existing rooftop solar power). Biomass and energy-from-waste facilities will contribute 2.27GW in capacity.
In 2020, coal accounted for most of Vietnam’s total power generation. Despite its dependence on coal, Vietnam announced that it would aim to be net zero by 2050, at COP26, alongside a complimentary commitment to not build any new coal power capacity, barring projects that were already underway.
Vietnam plans to completely phase out all coal-fired power plants by 2050, in line with its climate commitments. However, the combined capacity of coalfired power plants will see an increase to 30.1GW by 2030, from what was 21.4GW at the end of 2020. Vietnam’s coal consumption is expected to rise from 94-97m tons in 2025 to a peak of 125-127m tons in 2030, before declining to 73-76m tons by 2045. There are currently 6.13GW of coal power plants under construction in Vietnam, including Na Duong II, An Khanh – Bac Giang, Vung Ang I, Quang Trach I, Van Phong I and Long Phu. There are another 7.22GW worth of projects that are behind schedule due to financial difficulties including Thanh President, Nam Dinh I, Quang Tri, Vinh Tan III and Song Hau II. PDP8 states that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will work with investors to get these lagging projects mobilised by June 2024. If its efforts fail, these projects will be considered for termination. Leading up to 2050, all coal power plants will either be decommissioned or converted to use biomass or ammonia as fuel. Additionally, Vietnam intends to encourage the development of cogeneration power plants using residual heat, blast furnace gas and by-products of technological chains in industrial establishments. In 2030, the capacity of these sources is expected to reach 2.7GW.
PDP8 highlights that power plants using locally sourced gas and imported LNG will become the key source of power by 2030. The plan for the gas sector includes prioritising the Block B Ca Voi Xanh gas power project, which will contribute 6.9GW of gas power. This project involves plants such as O Mon II, III and IV (totalling 3,150MW), Central I and II and Dung Quat I, II and III (totalling 3,750MW). Additionally, O Mon I (660MW) will be converted to use Block B gas. The total capacity of gas power production including LNG is expected to exceed 37GW by 2030. By 2050, the majority of Vietnam’s gas power plants are projected to transition to hydrogen. The chart below illustrates Vietnam’s target generation capacity for 2030 by sector in comparison to the capacity generated in 2020.
Vietnam also intends to maximise its hydropower potential, taking into account forest protection and water source security. By 2030, the total capacity of hydropower generation, including smallhydro is expected to reach 29.35GW.
PDP8 also recognises the significance of proper grid infrastructure and energy storage in managing electricity loads. Vietnam plans for the development of a power transmission system that is in sync with the progress of power sources and the development of smart grids to integrate renewable energy sources on a large scale. It also aims to develop close to 2.4GW worth of pumped hydro projects and 300MW of battery storage projects by 2030.
Substantial investment will be needed to achieve the targets outlined in PDP8. The estimated total investment needed to develop the power source and transmission grid between 2021 and 2030 is expected to be around US$134.7bn. In December 2022, Vietnam signed a Just Energy Transition Partnership agreement with a group of developed countries collectively called the International Partners Group, providing US$15.5bn to support its energy transition. The approval of PDP8 is a step towards unlocking these funds and attracting international investors thus opening up an avenue of opportunities for developers and contractors alike.

This has been possible through the Scottish government’s Hydrogen Innovation Scheme, which will allow Glacier Energy, in collaboration with the Robert Gordon University, to manufacture five prototype pressure vessels.
Spotlight on technology is all about Kongsberg Digital’s new cloud-based navigation simulation solution, Ksim Navigation CLOUD. The latest advanced simulation technology is provided by Kongsberg as an online training application on its digital platform, a tool designed to offer basic navigation training in compliance with DNV’s Class D requirements.
It’s also been a pleasure to have AsstrA writing a guest editorial for this edition. The sector looks into the results of the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions on the international logistics industry. According to the article, the logistics segment is currently asking itself which changes imposed by the pandemic will remain now that the market is gaining traction once again.

Our relationship with the EIC developed to the extent that we became its goto technical partner to organise and develop thought leadership events, which helps to raise our profile, while benefiting EIC members and non-members.
We started with hydrogen. As part of Mott MacDonald’s hydrogen journey, we held annual hydrogen thought leadership events in partnership with the EIC. This led to entering into an exclusive two-year principal partnership with the EIC to deliver a global platform of events for industry experts to discuss the technological, economic, environmental and social transformations needed to build a sustainable future and reach net-zero targets. We’re now in the second year of our partnership and have participated in a variety of thought leadership talks in key industry areas, including energy security, hydrogen, offshore wind and HVDC, energy from waste and nuclear. These two synergies have been crucial in our two years as EIC’s technical principal partner. Where would you like to see Mott MacDonald and the EIC in the next 80 years?
We would like to see the EIC expand its influence in the coming years to reach beyond the supply chain to government, policy makers and financiers. In particular, we feel that the EIC is an independent body representing the energy sector and should play a more influencing role to governments. We’d also like to continue to support the EIC with technical and commercial solutions for the energy transition, consistent with sustainability, social outcomes and climate change.

SPP and EIC can work together to track these developments and support the companies developing these technologies, to ensure British suppliers such as SPP are at the forefront of these new projects and technologies.

We hope SPP and EIC can continue to collaborate long into the future. The live project tracking provided by EIC, alongside the benefits offered by EIC at global events, are of great use to SPP and we hope this information and service will continue to be available to SPP and British suppliers as a whole. What are the synergies between TÜV Rheinland/ Risktec and the EIC?
Both the EIC and TÜV Rheinland/Risktec acknowledge the rapidly changing energy landscape, with the emphasis moving quickly to the reduction of carbon and cleaner, greener energy solutions. TÜV Rheinland/ Risktec has been able to draw on decades of experience supporting safe energy operations for traditional energy sectors and offers the same level of safety and risk management support to the renewable sector. We have collaborated closely with operators of facilities creating energy using biomass, wind, hydro and solar to identify the hazards in their operations and explore how to mitigate or remove them. Through EIC forums we can share our experiences and help educate those entering the ever-expanding energy sectors, as many may not have a background working in high hazard industries. We recognise this energy transition cannot happen in a vacuum, there needs to be collaboration between developers, operators and service companies with industry bodies, like the EIC, helping facilitate knowledge transfer and sharing of best practices.
The energy landscape is constantly changing but, regardless of the source of energy, there will always be a need for safety and risk management. The industry, and all associated sectors, will still require risks to be identified and managed, and safety must remain a top priority. We see TÜV Rheinland/Risktec thriving as we continue to support existing and new clients. We will continue to explore how to mitigate risks as new technologies emerge and provide different challenges for our experienced teams of engineers and scientists. We need the EIC’s support to continue to connect the key players in industry and provide forums for knowledge sharing. This is especially important as new companies, new ways of working and new technologies enter the market. We see TÜV Rheinland/Risktec growing its already impressive global footprint, providing support across the increasing energy sectors as the mix of energy solutions changes. I predict the EIC will grow and morph in parallel with the energy industry, continuing to meet the needs of those working in the various sectors. I was delighted to be able to celebrate the EIC receiving the prestigious King’s Award for International Trade this year, as well as the EIC’s 80-year anniversary.

I met Amanda through the Economist network. We were both named Top 100 Women in Energy Transition in 2021 through the Transition Economist. Amanda and I connected via LinkedIn and we discussed a potential opportunity to participate in one of EIC’s webinars on the topic of hydrogen. I immediately agreed and that’s how my relationship with EIC began and I must admit that the experience has been quite rewarding not only in terms of keeping up to date with industry trends but also having an incredible opportunity to network with many leaders within the energy industry. I wanted to give back and therefore agreed to serve on the advisory board for EIC’s North and Central America committee as well as the Hydrogen committee.
What are the synergies between Worley and the EIC?
EIC and Worley operate in the same markets –conventional oil and gas covering upstream, midstream and LNG, as well as the new energy markets such as hydrogen. Strategy is a core function at Worley that defines the vision for our business and we rely on market intelligence from various sources along with our internal strengths and capabilities to identify growth markets. In my strategy role, I have used EICDataStream which is a projects database tracking energy projects from the inception stage all the way through to completion.
Where would you like to see Worley and the EIC in the next 80 years?
As role models in the sustainable energy space. I see Worley as a leader with innovative solutions that supports customers, reduces their carbon footprint and EIC with market intelligence and stakeholder engagement helps companies with their investment strategies.
I have no doubt in my mind that artificial intelligence will affect the future of energy and climate and it would be great to see both the companies leverage that and see how it can help in transformative ways.

Glacier Energy, a leading international provider of specialist products, services and engineered solutions for the renewable and conventional energy markets has secured funding through the Scottish Government’s Hydrogen Innovation Scheme to build hydrogen storage and distribution pressure vessel prototypes.
The awarded project, developed in collaboration with Robert Gordon University explores the feasibility of manufacturing a low-cost affordable hydrogen storage vessel using combined metal core and composite wrapping processes for testing that are both compact and easy to use in the consumer market.
A total of five prototype pressure vessels will be manufactured with each varying in size in order to establish structural response and operating limits. It will be evaluating the optimum design for large scale compressed gas hydrogen storage and distribution vessels, at a lower cost than is currently available in the market. Glacier Energy is developing this technology in order to provide alternative hydrogen storage and distribution solutions.
The Hydrogen Innovation Scheme, a fund of £7m was awarded to 32 different projects across Scotland that are focused on driving innovation in the production, storage and distribution of renewable hydrogen. The formal announcement of the successful applicants was announced by Scotland’s first minister Humza Yousaf at the All-Energy conference in Glasgow.
This funding award is the second successful funding application awarded for this project and follows the Scottish Funding Council Advanced Innovation Voucher Scheme award in August 2022 for the initial feasibility study which was successful and has paved the way for this next stage of the project.
Glacier Energy is successfully using its strong history and heritage to develop innovative solutions for the hydrogen industry. AEG Power Solutions (AEG PS), global provider of power systems and solutions for all types of critical and sustainable applications, has successfully commissioned the DC-3 power supply and a 230kVA transformer. AEG PS designed the solution to fit in a 40 foot container along with the H2B2 PEM EL30N electrolyser. This equipment will produce 65kg/day of green hydrogen with renewable energy for Ecopetrol Group, which has a goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2050.
The system was shipped and commissioned by H2B2 earlier this year, and the inauguration of Ecopetrol Group’s low-emission hydrogen production plant was inaugurated at the end of March 2023. The refuelling station will use H2B2’s EL30N electrolyser, which will produce and supply approximately 3kg/h of renewable hydrogen for a bus in the Bogotá DC public transport system in Colombia.

Now, following extensive research and investment, the company has brought a completely novel and globally patented product to market which aims to drastically reduce scour phenomena around fixed wind turbines that cause seabed erosion and a reduction in foundation strength and stiffness.

Scour protection typically involves the installation of a layer of material around the base of the monopile to prevent sediment erosion. The layer is placed on the seabed around the monopile to dissipate the energy of the fluid flow and reduce erosion rates.

On 13 April the Western Australian coast witnessed Isla, a Category 5 cyclone which left the Telfer mine in its direct path. The site was predicted to receive the force of a Category 3 cyclone around midday on 14 April, leaving the site owners, Newcrest, with a difficult decision to make.
Newcrest decided to evacuate the Telfer mine except for essential personnel. This left a small number of crew which included four EthosEnergy personnel to be on deck until the cyclone passed, and relief could be flown back to the site.
Barry Shires, operations and maintenance superintendent, Martin Robinson, leading hand, Dean Howell, OMT electrical, and Liam Kendle, OMT electrical, were the brave personnel who stayed at the facility during the cyclone. EthosEnergy, along with the other essential crew members, stayed in a shelter where remote monitoring of the power stations had been set up.
Despite the difficult circumstances, power, IT and mobile services continued uninterrupted throughout the cyclone. Fortunately, everyone was safe and EthosEnergy’s contribution allowed the Telfer site to keep running.

Marine scientists have deployed two hi-tech bottom pressure recorders (BPRs) on either side of the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to measure the strength of global ocean currents that drive much of the Earth’s climate.
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a large system of ocean currents that transports warm surface waters from the tropics northward towards the subpolar and Arctic regions. There, the waters cool, become denser and sink before returning southward at depth. In doing so, this vast conveyor belt movement of water is a major factor in controlling global heat distribution, regional sea level changes, the ocean’s absorption of carbon and European weather.
To measure the AMOC’s impact on our changing climate, scientists from the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban have deployed two deep-sea Bottom Pressure Recorders (BPRs), one in the north-east Atlantic and one in the Labrador Sea, to record regular changes in sea surface height.
The two Fetch AZA BPRs, developed and built by UK marine technology firm Sonardyne, have been placed thousands of metres below the sea surface where they will record sea surface height to the nearest centimetre, giving the researchers a detailed comparison between the two locations. Deployed for up to 10 years, this will allow them to measure changes in the speed and strength of the AMOC, which will provide crucial data to inform climate predictions.
The north east Atlantic instrument was deployed from the RRS James Cook during the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Programme (OSNAP) research cruise, jointly led by SAMS and the National Oceanography Centre (NOC). The western instrument was deployed by SAMS oceanographer Dr Sam Jones during a cruise on board the RV Meteor, led by the German marine institute GEOMAR.
The east side of the Atlantic Ocean is typically around 20 centimetres higher than the west side but the flow of the water does not go east to west, as the opposing force of the Coriolis effect from the rotating Earth causes a circular flow in a general south to north movement.
The AMOC transports roughly 1.25 Peta (10^15) Watts of energy from the Tropics towards the subpolar and Arctic regions – more than 60 times the present rate of world energy consumption. Despite being so influential in our climate, it has only been continuously measured for 19 years, limiting our long-term understanding of its relation to climate.
The BPRs will remain on the seabed for up to 10 years and the data they gather can be transmitted wirelessly through the water to a ship or even an uncrewed platform, without the need to recover them.
OSNAP is now six months into gathering data from both sides of the Atlantic and to mark this milestone Sonardyne and SAMS have released a video – Understanding the AMOC –explaining the effect of ocean currents on climate and the importance of the programme in more detail.

It is focused on increasing up time and cost savings within oil and gas, aqua culture and the public sector. Its solutions are designed specifically for operators and users within drilling and wells, service companies, maintenance and modification and OEM manufacturers to ensure reliable results to take business to the next level.
Six brand new Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses go into regular service with Germany’s first mobile hydrogen filling station, delivered by Westfalen Group, now in continuous operation and ready for refuelling.
Brühl was one of the pioneers who, together with RVK and Hürther Stadtwerke, took the first big step in 2011 – with hydrogen as an alternative drive for public transport. At that time, two buses of the prototype Phileas (APTS) were put into operation and they continued to commit themselves to the alternative drive with hydrogen. Three hydrogenpowered vehicles have been in use in Brühl city traffic since October 2021.
The decision to switch city traffic to hydrogen was made on 16 March 2022 in Brühl. Since then, many strings have been pulled and numerous sub-projects have been implemented. With the commissioning of the six new Solaris vehicles, the hydrogen landscape in the metropolitan area around Cologne will be enriched by another large piece of the puzzle.
Hydrogen-powered fuel-cell hybrid buses score in many respects. In addition to the greatly reduced noise emissions, this means, among other things, no emissions of NOx (collective term for gaseous oxides of nitrogen), CO2 (carbon dioxide) and soot particles.
With just under 390,000km a year, now driven exclusively with hydrogen, 393 tons of CO2 and 0.55 tons of NOx are avoided compared to the Euro 6 diesel bus. The 12 metre long Solaris vehicles can be refuelled just as quickly as diesel buses and therefore do not require any adjustments for operational processes.
The filling station was developed in co-operation between Westfalen Group and the Lancaster-based company NanoSUN. It is a containerbased fast-fill solution for refuelling at 350 bar. Filling a fuel cell bus with the mobile hydrogen filling station takes less than 20 minutes. Since the filling station container can deliver up to 230kg of hydrogen from several cylinders, fuel cell buses in Turnus can be fully refuelled. The system is particularly robust because there are no components that are prone to failure. For more information visit NanoSUN’s website.
The PSD-4 electronic pressure switch is the universal solution for industrial automation tasks – also in hygienic applications and under harsh conditions.
Thanks to EHEDG and 3-A certification, the pressure switch is also suitable for industries with high hygienic requirements.
Due to an accuracy of < ±0.5% and minimal long-term drift, it permanently ensures an accurate representation of the process pressure for more than 100m load cycles. The pressure switch is available with a digital output signal as well as a switchable and scalable analogue output. In addition, it can also be easily monitored via the self-diagnostics.
Condition data and the diagnostic functions allow consistent monitoring. Pressure or temperature values that are above or below the specifications are displayed directly in the system. The data also allows conclusions to be drawn about changing process conditions. Additional information helps to check the loading.
The scalable analogue output enables the measuring range to be adapted at a ratio of 5:1. In addition, the output signal can be configured specifically for the application. Thus the PSD-4 can be used flexibly.

The COVID-19 crisis has forced the logistics industry to make quick and decisive changes. Now, as the world moves into the post-COVID era, it is high time to ask which of the solutions introduced during the crisis will remain in use. Logistics managers at international transport and logistics company AsstrA-Associated Traffic AG share their thoughts on ‘what clicked in logistics’.
On 5 May, the World Health Organization announced that it was ending the emergency it declared for COVID-19 more than three years ago. It is a good moment to reflect on how the transportation industry has changed in recent years. The uncertainty caused severe economic upheaval, erasing trillions from GDP, disrupting trade and shattering businesses. However, when we concentrate on logistics, some positive results have come out of the disruption. One is that the fundamental importance of the supply chain was recognised and prioritised, with the necessity of investments in technical capabilities – such as real-time visibility and resiliency – clearly understood.
“Also, COVID-19 forced supply chain participants to develop new agility to keep their businesses going. Many organisations, for example, started the process of building advanced analytics tools to perform dynamic SKU rationalisation instead of running one-time spreadsheets as had been previously popular. COVID restrictions created a shortage of transport capacity – supply dominated demand. As a consequence of all this, freight forwarders had to support customers with more creative solutions in such market shocks,” said Vladislav Lagun, CСO at AsstrA.
Significant change is possible thanks to technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, or sensors that provide valuable data on where goods are in the supply chain and their condition. Such products might include frozen foods or medicines for which temperature monitoring may be critical. Cloud-based control tower platforms like AsstrA Suppliers’ Portal have also gained popularity as solutions for overseeing and exchanging information among suppliers and other supply chain participants.
The pandemic made some changes in our mind. Firstly we started to understand how important it is to be in touch with customers‚ secondly how important it is to minimise the human factor in the delivery process – that is why we started to offer multi-modal services based on rail delivery, and last but not least, we need not focus on one variant of delivering – we should go ahead with progress,” added Mark Risenbreg, Integrated Solutions Manager.
The sea transport market has faced lots of difficulties within the last three years: the increasing rates on transportation made it unfavourable to import goods from China; falling demand and COVID restrictions created problems with the stable production circle and trading.
The global ocean freight situation shows softening of freight demand continues to put downward pressure on ocean freight rates. Sea freight rates had risen significantly during the COVID-19 period‚ climbing to a 12-year high amid soaring global demand and supply chain delays. Thus‚ the maximum value of the Freightos Global Container Freight Index reached US$10-11 thousand for a 40-foot container in autumn 2021‚ having increased more than seven times from its level at the beginning of 2020. From climbing to historic highs during the global pandemic‚ ocean freight rates have fallen away since summer 2022. The index in May 2023 is down more than 80% over the last year. The Freightos Baltic Global Container Index now shows that the market is at the level of early 2020: the average value is US$1,400-1,500 for 40-foot containers,” underlined Elena Vysotskaya, Marketing Analyst at AsstrA.
COVID-19 accelerated pre-existing issues in the supply chain and brought the importance of visibility, resilience and digitisation to the fore. In the past, cost reduction could be achieved through lean operations, longer lead times and low-cost labour. Now, agility, visibility, automation and upskilled people will be the key to better decision-making and excellence across integrated supply chain workflows.

Back for it’s fifth year, we held the Energy Exports Conference at P&J Live in Aberdeen on 5-6 June. We made EEC23 a free to attend event which saw our numbers grow to over 2,000 registrations from over 1000 individual companies making this the largest in-person EEC to date.
Some of the highlights of the conference included Stuart Broadley’s interview with Wood CEO Ken Gilmartin, who provided an intimate insight into Wood’s future plans (video of this interview coming soon) along with the extremely popular Aramco global opportunities workshop which following the presentations provided the supply chain with the chance to interact with Aramco on a one-to-one basis. We were also joined by ADNOC, Bechtel, bp, Fluor, Equinor, Wärtsilä, Wood, Worley and Siemens Energy who provided their own global updates on their key projects for the supply chain.
As the event focuses on global exporting opportunities we were delighted to have speakers join us in Aberdeen from all over the world, including delegations from Kazakhstan and Nigeria along with those travelling from Brazil, America and Europe.

June saw the team heading to Aberdeen to support the Energy Exports Conference (EEC). This conference and exhibition brought together many of the world’s key decision makers and the energy supply chain in one event. EEC2023 highlighted actionable project opportunities in key global energy markets and discussed the industry’s demand for clean tech and net zero targets.
On Tuesday 13 June EIC members joined Rachel Cottiss, business lead and events manager for North East England, for a member only tour of Heysham power stations. This interactive session welcomed attendees on a guided tour of EDF’s unique Heysham sites, exploring the only location in the UK to have two operating nuclear power stations. Once again the first half of the year has flown by with what appears to be an increased level of activity with some further projects hoping to be announced across the region in the second half of the year.
Having delivered three Connect events (Oman, UAE and Baku) within the first half of the year the team here will be glad of the respite before we begin to plan our next event of this nature. A consistent theme across all three has been the level of opportunities on offer and a resurgence in the market after a few years of underinvestment. As the data is showing us there is an increase in all sectors, across all regions, certainly a reason for optimism in the industry.
With this in mind I am interested to hear from our members as to where they would like us to go next with our EIC Connect brand.
To top off a busy month our Energy Exports Conference held last month, once again illustrated the wealth of opportunities on offer across the globe. I was delighted to participate in the Saudi Aramco and ADNOC sessions, alongside the opportunities in Africa and Kazakhstan. Please reach out to me if you would like to find out more.

We will announce our regional award winners in Dubai on 14 September for what will no doubt prove to be another great event just before we embark on ADIPEC 2023.
Speaking of which, please note that ADIPEC will take place slightly earlier this year from 2-5 October 2023 due to COP28 taking place in the UAE in November. The UK pavilion is once again full and we are in the midst of planning our evening reception, panel sessions and contractor briefings that you have become accustomed to on the pavilion. Being a month earlier please expect this to be hotter than usual.

ADNOC has signed agreements with more than 60 UAE and international companies to manufacture critical non-oil products in its supply chain in the Emirates as part of its localisation drive. The energy company also expects to meet its target to domestically manufacture US$19bn worth of products in its procurement pipeline by 2027, from a previous goal of 2030. The agreements, which were announced at the Make it in the Emirates forum in Abu Dhabi, have enabled Dh2.84bn to flow back into the UAE economy through industrial investments by suppliers in expanding or establishing new facilities. The agreements could also enable 21,500 jobs within the UAE by 2031.
Bahrain’s crown prince and prime minister, HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, introduced Bapco Energies as the new brand identity for the kingdom’s Oil and Gas Holding Co (nogaholding). Under the umbrella of Bapco Energies, the existing operating companies, such as Bahrain Petroleum Co (Bapco), Bahrain National Gas Co (Banagas), Bahrain National Gas Expansion Company (Tawseah), Bahrain Aviation Fueling Co (Bafco), Tatweer Petroleum and Bapco Retail Co (Tazweed), will undergo integration and rebranding over the next three years, resulting in the establishment of seven businesses. These businesses will include three new ventures focused on maximising enterprise value through trading and investing in new technologies and renewables.

On 8-9 June 2023, EIC APAC hosted the APAC business lounge and the plenary session on clean energy solutions at the Sabah Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition (SOGCE).
This brought together key players from Sabah’s energy industry to share insights, network and discuss future trends and opportunities. The two-day event featured a range of presentations, panel discussions and networking opportunities. Delegates had the chance to hear from industry experts and learn about the latest technologies and innovations in Sabah’s energy industry. Additionally, the event provided an avenue for delegates to connect with exhibitors from all over the region and explore the latest products and services on offer. We were happy to have seven member companies, including Torr Energy, TBSB, FASTools, Crescent Engineering, Alypz, Flovaco and TS Electrical Marketing, exhibit their products and services at our business lounge. A huge thank you to our sponsors Torr Energy, Honeywell, ABB and EXS Synergy.
In mid-June, EIC APAC also hosted the business lounge at the IEW Sarawak exhibition, a premier event that brought together experts, innovators and stakeholders from Sarawak’s energy industry to exchange knowledge and showcase cutting-edge technological advancements. We were thrilled to have six member companies, including Torr Energy, TNF Energy, Faazmiar Technology, TS Electrical Marketing, IPS Malaysia and Proficient Inspection Services, exhibit their products and services at our business lounge.
At the end of June we held the first Singapore Meet the Energy Players series which will be held monthly. This first event was sponsored by ARUP with attendees including EIC member companies in the region and key energy players in Singapore. This month EIC APAC will be hosting a Meet the Energy Players session in Indonesia in conjunction with Indonesia Petroleum Association Conference & Exhibition (IPA), as well as the second session of the Singapore Meet the Energy Players series.
In September, we are organising the EIC APAC Energy Conversations 2023 from 13-15 September at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre co-located with the 19th Asian Oil and Gas and Petrochemical Engineering (OGA). EIC APAC has been selected as the official conference organiser. This conference is aimed at promoting focused conversations to encourage higher participation of Asian oil and gas companies to participate more aggressively in the energy transition, to exchange and share the latest concepts and approaches by international, regional and local companies on the solutions available in order to collectively achieve targets in the Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030 and 2050, and to discuss solutions in the decarbonisation of oil and gas operations.
We are inviting experts from key local players such as PETRONAS, TNB, Sarawak Energy and Shell Malaysia, alongside regional national oil companies and others from Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, India, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam; also included are international OEMs and MNCs such as Siemens, Wärtsilä, General Electric, Schneider and ABB. We are also hosting business matching activities and will organise plenty of networking opportunities to benefit all the delegates.

Petronas has kicked off the tender process for a floating production, storage and offloading vessel for the stand alone development of its Bestari deep-water oilfield offshore Sabah, East Malaysia. The company has reportedly approached domestic and international floater specialists seeking budgetary quotes for a FPSO with a production capacity of at least 15,000 barrels per day for Bestari.
The Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8), which is part of the National Electricity Development Plan 2021-30, was approved in May 2023 by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh after two years of wrangling and revision. According to the industry ministry, which prepared the document, half of office buildings and homes in Vietnam will be powered by rooftop solar panels by 2030. The country will also aim to generate renewable energy for exports, with a target of 5-10GW by 2030.

The oil major has agreed to acquire PDC Energy, an independent US operator active in the Permian and Denver-Julesberg (DJ) shale basins. PDC owns 275,000 net acres in the DJ basin in Colorado and 25,000 net acres in the Permian basin in Texas. The transaction is worth US$6.3bn, or US$7.6bn if debt is included. The deal represents a major expansion of Chevron’s footprint in Colorado, where the company is already one of the largest producers.
GE Vernova has announced plans to invest US$50m in a new production line of onshore wind turbines in New York. Located in Schenectady, the facility will assemble key components for the company’s 6.1MW turbines. The decision was motivated by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which provides tax incentives to developers of renewable energy projects using equipment manufactured locally.

EIC Rio’s office commemorated its remarkable 80th anniversary on 26 May. The event featured presentations from our strategic partners Petrobras and Shell, followed by a delightful evening reception with cocktails. Attendees gained valuable insights and learned about future trends in Brazil’s industry.
Roberto Ardenghy, CEO of IBP (Brazilian Institute of Petroleum), addressed the ongoing debate surrounding exploratory activity in the Equatorial Margin/Amazon Basin. He posed a thought-provoking question: “What would Rio de Janeiro’s economy look like without oil and gas activity?”
The Uruguayan government has announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Port of Rotterdam for co-operation in the green hydrogen sector. Uruguay is one of the few South American countries with a national strategy for clean hydrogen, with a focus on developing only green hydrogen projects. The country aims to achieve a renewable energy capacity of 250GW, with plans to deploy 10GW of capacity to produce hydrogen. The largest port in Europe, Rotterdam has also sought partnerships with the Port of Pecém, a Brazilian hub for clean hydrogen projects.

Petrobras took centre stage, along with contributions from Diogo Calegari and Josiane Kurzlop. They shared exciting plans and updates about the world’s largest deepwater field, the Búzios oil field. Our celebration’s master sponsor, EquipSea, announced Shell Brazil’s Vice President for Corporate Relations and Sustainability, Mr Flavio Ofugi Rodrigues. He presented Shell’s CAPEX of R$30bn between 2023 and 2027, aiming for 40% local content in exploratory projects and a 19% reduction in emissions in new projects.
In May, EIC welcomed MDC Energia and Braskem for a successful Breakfast in Rio event. MDC Energia showcased its activities in Brazil, including new projects that will increase biomethane capacity. Braskem discussed its industrial presence in Brazil and plans to double polyethylene production in Rio. Both companies highlighted business opportunities in the downstream market.

The French oil major has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government of Rio de Janeiro aimed at further expanding collaboration in the offshore wind sector. The MoU is valid for two years and includes topics related to tax incentives and transmission grid expansion. TotalEnergies is the developer of the Sopros do Rio de Janeiro, a 3GW offshore wind project off the coast of Rio expected to feature 200 turbines.
