Pumped hydropower energy storage With the rise of renewables, energy storage technology is becoming more essential to speed up fossil fuel phase out and meeting electricity demands. One of the key messages in National Grid’s ‘Future Energy Scenarios 2021’, was the need for flexible power generation for the reform of the energy market, calling for as much as 13GW of energy storage by 2030 to enable growth in renewables. From the variety of technologies available, pumped hydro continues to dominate the market of over 180GW of operational energy storage capacity. What is pumped hydro energy storage? Common sense dictates that water and electricity are a dangerous combination. However, for over 100 years, pumped hydroelectric power has supported electricity consumption around the world. When electricity demand peaks water falls from an upper reservoir into a lower reservoir passing through turbines which generate power. The water is then pumped back up the hill during off peak times when electricity is cheaper (at night), or when there is surplus renewable energy.

R&D efforts have brought new hydro storage technologies, such as variable speed, giving plant owners more flexibility, output, efficiency, reliability and availability. According to World Bank figures, pumped hydro is the cheapest energy storage technology in the world in terms of cost per kilowatt-hour of capacity. Total project costs range between US$106 and US$200 per kilowatt-hour, compared to between US$393 and US$581 for lithium-ion batteries. However, the pipeline for upcoming projects indicates battery storage as a rapidly growing market. Top markets include North America, Europe and Australasia with planned capacities of 11GW, 5GW and 10GW respectively. Globally there is around 30GW of planned battery storage capacity. Advances in technology and falling prices mean grid-scale battery facilities are becoming more popular. Alongside this, battery storage is being used for fast deployment and scaling of projects, as well as meeting demands for a range of appliances, including electric vehicles, consumer electronics and residential and commercial use. However, while batteries can provide fast response times, they are yet to demonstrate their ability to provide the full range of ancillary services needed to support the grid. Lithiumion batteries continue to lead in terms of battery energy storage deployment, however increasing awareness has been raised on the technology’s limitations – in terms of performance, safety and sustainability. As a result, more attention has been directed at other battery technologies and compositions that could gradually compete with the current frontrunner. Alternative battery storage technologies in development/use include lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickelmetal hydride, sodium nickel chloride, Li-S silicon anode, zinc-bromide and zinc-iron. Simply put, batteries are more cost effective for delivering small amounts of stored energy over a short time at high power levels, whereas pumped hydro is better at storing and releasing larger amounts of stored energy. However, it is without a doubt that both storage types are playing a tremendous role in the energy transition, and a diverse portfolio of technologies will ultimately benefit the market. One of the great benefits of pumped hydro storage is the ability to respond to large energy demand changes within seconds, if needed. Pumped storage historically has been used to balance load on a system, enabling larger generating sources to operate at peak efficiencies. Pumped hydro storage plants have a lifetime of more than 40 years for electromechanical equipment and 100 years for dams. Some pumped hydro technologies, such as closed loop, present minimal environmental impact as they are not connected to existing river systems. This also allows for a plant to be located near a local grid. Furthermore, pumped hydro technology is mature, offering cost-effective ways to provide large scale balancing and grid services with reliable costs and performance.

You may have noticed on social media that we have officially launched the North Sea Decarbonisation Conference, building on the success of the inaugural version of the event in May last year. Taking place on 17-18 May 2022 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London, we are excited to bring back such a popular event with EIC members and non-members to focus on key topics such as hydrogen, electrification, offshore wind, CCUS, technology, green investment and decarbonising oil and gas. Hot on the heels of this announcement will be the launch of the Energy Exports Conference 2022. By now a well-recognised fixture in the energy calendar, #EEC2022 will return to Aberdeen for the first time since its launch in 2019. Expect to hear more about this year’s event on Monday 7 February and to snap up one of the in-demand sponsorship packages before they run out! Last week we published the first EIC Insight Report of the year, and you may have noticed it looks a lot different to before. We’ve revamped and refreshed the design to fall more in line with our branding and to provide higher quality reports to our members. EIC members can now download the UK Operational Renewables report from EICDataStream, with OPEX reports studying last year’s renewables gigawatt additions in Europe, GCC and ASEAN to follow shortly. We’re also very close to finishing the biggest project of them all. This February, all EIC members will have the ability to access and view all previous EIC webinar content on the EIC website – for free. This highly demanded functionality will further boost the value of EIC membership, allowing all individuals at member companies to access all previous EIC content at their leisure and at no additional cost. And last but certainly not least, the deadline for EIC members to register your interest in taking part in the 2022 EIC Survive and Thrive report is coming up. How far has the sector come in putting sustainability at the heart of its operations? In 2020, many companies started formalising their aspirations around sustainability goals, and last year, the industry started to show some progress in this area, predominantly driven through procurement functions. This year, I expect we’ll start to see these aspirations being embraced on an operational level, although there are still significant regional differences in the pace of adoption in the sector. It’s encouraging to see a huge shift in focus. The biggest impact is for efficiency savings and shrinking carbon footprint across the supply chain. There’s still a long way to go, however, with more investment and impetus needed to fast-track action. For any challenge, knowing the scale of the task at hand is paramount to solving it. How can innovative methodologies like ChampionX’s internal carbon footprint calculator for its chemical offerings, make a difference to oilfield operations?

Our internal methodology for CM calculating carbon footprint gives us a measurable understanding of the baseline where we can judge performance and progress.

It has helped us understand the carbon impact of what we’re developing and how we’re delivering products to our customers. This creates insight for innovating new technologies and sharing opportunities that create real value through this very transparent and tangible assessment. We’ve extended this approach to measure the impact of our programmes on customers’ assets. This can lead to a holistic carbon impact assessment across the value chain.

That shift of focus from operations to sustainability creates a better workplace culture, just as a focus on safety has done in the past. People understand this need, they’re hungry for it, and want to be part of efforts to improve. This concerted effort is hugely positive for a company’s reputation and gives everyone the motivation to succeed.

What difference can the company’s sustainability impact assessment make to a firm’s operations and the culture of its workforce? It’s been designed to facilitate an open and frank discussion with our customers around the critical elements of their environmental, social, governance (ESG) programme. We then work with them to do a ‘cold-eyes’ review into their operations to uncover opportunities to help them achieve their goals. Examples might include ways to reduce the carbon intensity of their operations, minimise freshwater usage or reduce their overall waste streams. The output typically results in partnerships that drive performance. This kind of assessment is so important to helping customers quickly understand what’s working well and what needs improving. From there, they can prioritise and develop solutions with support from ChampionX.

It’s widely believed that implementing more sustainable practices not only protects the environment but can have a positive impact on the financial, logistical and technical challenges of a project or development. Can you give some examples? Historically, the industry has shied away from fully embracing ESG aspects partly because of the fear that it’s going to add more cost. But really, it creates incredible opportunities, especially for innovation, which often result in reduced operational expenses. For example, one of our water shut-off chemical solutions was used by a customer in Canada to reduce their large volume of produced water by ~86%. Consequently, the amount of energy needed to pump the fluids to the surface was reduced, which in turn lowered the associated carbon emissions related to the artificial lift equipment. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint of the operation, this programme significantly cut the annual OPEX for the operator.

Concerns over climate change and calls for the oil and gas industry to lower carbon emissions have never been so forceful. Mark Zijlstra, regional sales manager and his colleague, marketing analyst Charlotte McNamee, share their thoughts on how a sustainability focus can reap rewards which go beyond the bottom line… Another example is how we’re re-examining our supply chain for products in Azerbaijan. Recently, we successfully replaced an imported solvent with a locally sourced solvent, which generated an annualised reduction of 291 metric tons of CO2 emissions1. This is equivalent to the CO2 impact of taking more than 63 cars off the road for one year2 and demonstrates how localisation can lead to environmental sustainability and greater operational efficiencies.

What is ChampionX doing to introduce more sustainable options for its customers and across its workforce and operational hubs? Last year, ChampionX announced the acquisition of Scientific Aviation Inc, a market leader in site-specific and regional methane emissions monitoring solutions for continuous and periodic monitoring applications, as well as Tomson Technologies LLC and Group 2 Technologies LLC, leaders in nano technology platforms with proven commercial applications that help energy companies lower the carbon footprint and operating expenses of their oil and gas production operations. Internally, we’ve made changes in several areas, including using renewable electricity for most of the power usage at our manufacturing plant in Aberdeen and developing a plan to implement solar panels

Across ChampionX, there’s a passion for becoming more carbon conscious and to help climate change. Improving lives is woven throughout our organisation’s fabric, as demonstrated by the high engagement in our sustainable energy empowers development (SEED) employee resource group. This group aims to elevate our sustainability objectives and company goal of creating a workplace culture where everyone feels a sense of belonging. It also creates opportunities for personal development. There’s so much support to share ideas, however small, to make a difference in the workplace and at home – from planting hundreds of trees in Scotland, to organising litter clean up events in our communities around the world, to sharing tips for avoiding single-use plastic products. It’s exciting to feel that engagement can collectively change the culture within the industry.

The clear message from leaders at COP26 is there is no silver bullet or quick fix. What can be done now to bring net zero ambitions closer?

The oil and gas industry is like a super tanker. If the industry is going to quickly realign to this new destination and fully embrace ESG at every level, then it will take all of us working together to safely steer a new course. Only through impactful partnerships, genuinely embracing change, and challenging paradigms, will we be able to achieve the low carbon future that’s urgently needed. Mark Zijlstra has been with ChampionX for 10 years and has held various technical and sales roles during that time. Currently, he is the regional sales manager for the Caspian region. He also leads various sustainability initiatives within the company, including his role as the president of the eastern hemisphere chapter of SEED, ChampionX’s sustainability-focused employee resource group. Charlotte McNamee has more than 11 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. She previously worked for eight years as a process engineer at Fluor, and later, Wood Group. Charlotte joined ChampionX three years ago and is now a marketing analyst based in Aberdeen, UK. She graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a BSc in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Economics and Business Management. Charlotte was recently selected as one of Transition Economist’s Top 100 Women in the Energy Transition and Top 10 Women in Renewables in recognition of her work in supporting the energy transition.

Power system protection technologies are essential to maintaining the stability of a grid. They aim to isolate a faulty section of an electrical power system, leaving the rest of the live system to function acceptably without severe damage from the fault. ‘Recommended Practice DNVRP-0575’ was published following a joint research project conducted by DNV and Nordic transmission system operators Fingrid, Statnett SF and Svenska Kraftnät. It offers industry-reviewed guidance on planning and implementation of cyber security measures and controls in power system protection devices. The measures outlined in the Recommended Practice cover people, processes and technology. They apply to organisations involved in operating, managing and securing protection devices and the digital technologies in substations. They are based on a comprehensive review of current EU and US legislation, and a range of applicable standards and guidelines on cyber security of operational technologies. EthosEnergy’s CEO, Ana Amicarella has been recognised as Top Executive of the Year during the Experience Power conference hosted by Power magazine. Power magazine honoured innovative leaders from the power generation industry during an awards ceremony at the Experience Power conference last year. A worldwide call for nominations went out and submissions were narrowed down to a shortlist of awardworthy contenders into 15 categories.

Holding previous senior management positions and responsible for engineering and operational delivery teams, Kevin has been key to demonstrable company wide operational improvements.

Together, Ocean Infinity and Red Rock have all the ingredients to develop next-generation shipping to provide the industry with the ability to operate safely on a global scale. I’m incredibly excited to welcome the Red Rock team onboard.

Since re-joining the company, Kevin has utilised his expertise to build valuable client relationships, deliver major projects and extend MTE’s project portfolio through focussed R&D initiatives.

The acquisition will combine Ocean Infinity’s Armada robotic vessels and low emission operations with Red Rock’s ability to develop hardware and software solutions for remote and autonomous handling. Together, the two businesses will transform port operations and shipping through artificial intelligenceenabled, safe, low emission movement of vessels and cargo.

Matt Camp, MTE’s former operations director is a highly experienced leader, specialising in marketing and sales for the oil and gas, nuclear and renewables sectors. As a chartered engineer, Matt’s knowledge and experience is extensive having previously held senior positions within operations, business development, engineering and commercial. Since re-joining the company in 2019, Matt has managed MTE’s repositioning and growth activities, successfully strengthening the business with substantial order awards.

Optilan wins new two-year contract on BTC pipeline

Optilan, the leading telecoms and security systems integrator, has successfully completed the first year of operation on the BTC pipeline project, resulting in the award of the continued support and maintenance contract for the system.

Optilan has partnered with BTC on these assets since 2012, when Optilan was appointed to install enhanced security along the 1,076km Turkey section of the pipeline. The new contract will now focus on long term sustainable collaboration to ensure the effective maintenance of the systems installed, for which safety and efficiency will remain central to execution. This will cover maintenance for the following systems: pipeline monitoring, perimeter security and CCTV, installed along the Turkey section of the pipeline.

The agreement is another example of Optilan’s capabilities and expertise in the pipeline sector. As a global leader, Optilan will deliver this project from its Turkish office as the main contractor on the project. This follows a string of project awards made recently in the region, including the Misurata power plants by ENKA and the Jubail-Riyadh water transmission system by Limak, which highlights Optilan’s global footprint.

Petroplan appoints new CEO Specialist energy talent acquisition group, Petroplan, has appointed Christopher Honeyman Brown as chief executive officer to lead the group’s global operations.

A widely respected professional within the accounting, law and education space, Christopher’s appointment signals a new era for Petroplan as the group begins to move at pace, accelerating, adapting and sharpening its service offering. Prior to becoming chief executive, Christopher was appointed as non-executive director of Petroplan Holdings Ltd in 2018. His proven leadership capability in large and complex organisations ideally positions him to deliver Petroplan’s vision for growth. Christopher’s breadth of experience spans 50 years including his role as CEO for Alsop Wilkinson, which during his tenure later became DLA Piper following a successful merger with Dibb Lupton Broomhead. He was then CEO of asb law, and appointed chairman of publishers Hennik Group Ltd in 2015 all while serving as a governor for Stowe School from 1993 to 2016. Sandvik celebrates record order for its nuclear segment

Sandvik Materials Technology has announced the securing of a record order for nuclear tubes and pipes from a world-leading low carbon energy company for the development of nuclear power stations in the UK. Sandvik will supply nuclear tubes and pipes in 29 dimensions in grade 3R65, a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless chromium-nickel steel with a low carbon content. The tubes will be mainly used to connect different systems close to the second reactor at the Hinkley Point C power station in Bristol, England. The materials will require a high degree of cleanliness to meet the nuclear RCC-M design code, with firm controls on instructions and procedures and regular onsite third-party inspections during manufacturing. The tubes and pipes will be manufactured at Sandvik’s production unit in Sandviken, Sweden.

Sonardyne to stream ocean exploration missions live

The world’s deepest diving acrylic hulled manned submersible is to be equipped with Sonardyne’s BlueComm optical communications link to allow live streaming of deep ocean expeditions anywhere in the world. The Triton 7500/3 series submersible will operate from REV Ocean, one of the world’s most advanced research vessels, currently under construction for the Norwegian non-profit organisation of the same name. BlueComm will allow the occupants of the Triton submersible to live stream high-definition video and audio to the surface, including to those on board the vessel’s 35-person auditorium or even website and television audiences worldwide, to share first-hand in their experience. © 2022 Sonardyne

During its missions, REV Ocean’s Triton submersible will work alongside a 6,000m rated Kystdesign remotely operated vehicle (ROV), which will also be fitted with BlueComm. The Triton submersible will stream its video to the ROV, which will in turn feed the data up to the REV Ocean research vessel via a cable.

International trade Its all about hydrogen 2021 saw a rise in announcements of hydrogen production projects, meaning the next few years are vital for pushing these developments off the ground ready for commercial, largescale production. Europe is taking the lead as one of the top hydrogen markets with over 150 projects in the pipeline, most of which are currently at the feasibility stage and have start-up dates for the mid-2020s. This is in line with the EU’s Hydrogen Act which plans for a ramp-up of hydrogen projects between 2025 and 2035, ready for huge market growth from 2035 to 2050 onwards. Germany is at the forefront of the European hydrogen revolution with a goal of 5GW by 2030 and the Renewable Energies Sources Act, which contains provisions to support the production and industrial usage of green hydrogen. Germany has 62 largescale hydrogen projects to be state funded as part of a joint European hydrogen project (IPCEI), which has €8bn earmarked for German IPCEI projects alone.

On the other side of the globe, North America is making headway Camilla in developing its Tew hydrogen economy. The US Hydrogen Roadmap predicts that the hydrogen market could generate US$140bn per year in revenue by 2030, and US$750bn per year in revenue by 2050. Policies and funding are being put in place to aid the market, most prominently US$64m in funding for 18 projects that will support the H2@Scale vision for affordable hydrogen production, storage, distribution and use. The EIC recognises this importance and is committed to getting the hydrogen supply chain one step ahead of the immense market growth that will occur over the coming years. Middle East news As we begin to settle into 2022 the announcement that federal government departments in the UAE are to change their working week adopting a four and a Ryan M cPhers on half day working week, with employees working Monday to Thursday and a half day on Fridays. The decision will better align the Emirates with global markets, reflecting the country’s strategic status on the global economic map. It is also hoped that the new long weekend will boost productivity and improve work-life balance. At the time of writing several companies in the private sector have followed suit, with others undertaking a consultation period. I am delighted to kick the year off with some exciting news with ADNOC having joined EIC as our first ever NOC member, this is a significant milestone in the EIC journey, and I look forward to building upon the tremendous relationship between our respective organisations. The renewables market will also continue to be a key area of focus with many countries, including major oildependent nations, having pledged to reach net zero emissions by the middle of the century as they strive to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change. Testament to this was global renewable energy capacity increasing 4.7% in 2021, as countries focus on reducing emissions to protect the environment, making it a recordbreaker for renewables worldwide. New offshore wind installations doubled compared to 2020 setting us up for an exciting year ahead on all fronts. OPEC appoints new secretary general

OPEC has appointed Kuwaiti oil executive Haitham Al Ghais as its new secretary general, as demand for oil continues to improve amid a mild recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Mr Al Ghais, a veteran of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and Kuwait’s OPEC governor from 2017 to June 2021, will take the group’s reins in August, replacing Mohammad Barkindo. OPEC+, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, is entering a new phase of supply recalibrations as the US and other key oil-consuming countries are looking to play a more active role in the markets.

Asia Pacific news Regional update Going into the new year the pandemic is still playing havoc with uncertainties and restrictions in many countries within the Asia Pacific region.

In November 2021 several countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam were looking to start opening their international borders for business and leisure travellers. However, the news of the Omicron variant emerging and spreading at a faster pace than previous variants has led to tightening of restrictions in many countries. One example was the much-awaited implementation of the vaccinated travel lane between Malaysia and Singapore which was suspended in late December 2021 due to the fears of the Omicron variant being spread by international travellers. At the time of writing, most of the countries in Asia Pacific such as China, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India among others are reporting increases of coronavirus cases and hence have delayed the opening of borders for international travel. Having said that however, there are positive signs that the Omicron variant is not as deadly as its predecessors, leading to Asian countries being fairly optimistic of allowing travel within the first quarter of 2022. As in previous years, EIC Asia Pacific organised our annual EIC Breakfast Networking in January 2022 in a local hotel in Kuala Lumpur. We were honoured by the presence of the Deputy British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Dave Thomas, who gave his welcome speech to the attendees. A total of 10 ASEAN member companies participated as sponsors and exhibitors and about 200 attendees from various energy industry players in Kuala Lumpur were present at the event. We would like to thank all the sponsors and attendees for their participation and full support of this event. Our next major event in 2022 will be the EIC Asia Pacific Energy Conversations 2022 which will be held as an inperson event in Kuala Lumpur on 8-9 March 2022. This event will be officiated by the Minister of Environment of Malaysia and keynote speeches will be given by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency Charles Hay and a senior representative from Petronas. The main themes of this event are accelerating the green shift towards net zero and decarbonising the oil and gas industry. International energy players such as Siemens Energy, GE Power, Schneider Electric, ONGC, Shell, Honeywell and UK players such as Aggreko, Wood and BP are expected to participate as speakers. EIC Asia Pacific will also be organising monthly EIC members networking sessions in a location to be advised starting from February 2022. This will give the opportunity to members in Kuala Lumpur to meet each other and exchange notes. Iberdrola offshore wind power play in the Philippines Spanish green power giant Iberdrola has signed an agreement with Triconti ECC Renewables and Stream Invest Holding AG, sealing an option to enter five offshore wind farms. All five projects have secured a wind energy service contract from the Philippines Department of Energy.

McDermott to deliver Scarborough gas field floater McDermott International has been awarded an engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) contract by Woodside, as the operator for and on behalf of the Scarborough joint venture, for its floating production unit (FPU) offshore Western Australia. The award follows the successful completion of the FEED for the project.

US to become largest LNG exporter by year-end

The country is poised to become the world’s largest LNG exporter by the end of 2022, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Currently behind Australia and Qatar, the US will see key LNG liquefaction capacity additions over the coming months. This includes the 0.76Bcf/d Train 6 at the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana, which will begin exporting LNG later in 2022. Another major addition will be enabled by Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass LNG terminal, also in Louisiana, which will have a capacity of 1.6Bcf/d. In total, EIA estimates that the US nominal LNG liquefaction capacity will amount to 11.4Bcf/d and peak capacity will hit 13.9Bcf/d.

Mexico mulling new nuclear power plant

Mexico’s energy ministry has said that it is working alongside the country’s National Institute for Nuclear Research (ININ) on studies for a new nuclear power generation unit. The facility would be developed either at the existing Laguna Verde nuclear complex in Veracruz or at a greenfield location in Sonora state. After a location is defined, basic engineering studies will begin, and construction could take six to seven years.

If 2021 was already a year of growth in the Rio office, expectations are high for 2022. We would like to announce new additions to our team. Cláudia Soares has joined as our new junior graphic Clariss e Roch a designer. On the market intelligence side, we have two new SupplyMap interns, Kevin Pedrosa and Diana Obermuller. Last but not least, Mariana Messere has assumed the position of membership intern. We are very happy with our team’s expansion and look forward to this year’s work. We are thrilled that our partnership with the British Chamber of Commerce in Brazil to deliver the Brazil-UK Energy Collaboration Forum will continue in 2022. This event aims to be a forum of collaboration in the energy sector between the UK and Brazil, developing partnerships, gathering operators, contractors and others to expose their activities in Brazil, as well as projects and business opportunities.

At the time of writing, we are planning to explore the renewables field and have an event on offshore wind on 10 February. The event will be opened by the British Chamber of Commerce’s President, Fabio Caldas and DIT’s Deputy Consul General, Anthony Preston. Also from the DIT, Flavia Silva de Castro will explain how the DIT can support business in Brazil, mapping the supply chain, promoting partnerships and much more. She will be followed by Isla Robb from EC20, who will provide an overview of the lessons learned from the British market. We will also have Elbia Gannoum, Abeolica’s CEO, who will give us an overview of the Brazilian market. Other topics to be discussed include British supply chain capacity, a case study and offshore wind in the Brazilian region. Brazil hits 13GW of solar capacity

The installed capacity from solar power in Brazil has achieved the 13GW mark, according to the Brazilian Solar Power Association (ABSOLAR). It estimates that US$11bn has been invested in the country’s solar sector since 2012, creating approximately 390,000 job positions. Utility-scale solar is the fifth largest power source in Brazil (with 2.53% of total capacity), behind hydro (59.6%), fossil fuel-fired power plants (16.45%), wind (11.4%) and biomass (8.8%).

Equinor to shoot offshore seismic in Argentina

The Norwegian oil company is looking to acquire 10,000 sq km of seismic data off the coast of Argentina. Seismic work, which is expected to take up to five months, will target the CAN_100, CAN_108 and CAN_114 offshore blocks in the Argentina Norte Basin. The 2019 offshore bidding round saw a total of 18 blocks awarded to IOCs such as Shell, Total, ExxonMobil and Eni, as well as Equinor.
