In the spirit of Thanksgiving I am departing from my typical letter pointing out something bothering me about developments in the industry. Instead I would like to focus on being thankful. First off I am thankful to be living in this amazing time we are in. Cannabis acceptance is continuously on the move forward. That is apparent from the ballot initiatives for legalization going on around the country (see Legalization Marches On page 54). Then of course there is the ever-emerging science pointing to the many possibilities of medicinal cannabis in the treatment of many diseases including diabetes (page 44). For the last month it has been hemp harvest season. Our cover photo (from a local hemp farm) was chosen to pay homage to the pioneer hemp farmers in Colorado. More farmers are jumping onto the hemp bandwagon making this is an exciting time for all of us. As more farmers grow hemp, more people will find uses for this amazing plant. We are only in our infancy in the cannabis industry but we are growing up fast. Sometimes when you are in the thick of things you cannot always see how far we have come. It is a testament when we realize that we are no longer looking over our shoulders waiting for the big bad feds to swoop in and take everything we have worked for away. While the growing pains of regulations are a pain in the butt (METRC anyone?), at least we have a legal system to bitch about. We are thankful to you, our dedicated readers. You are the reason that we work so hard to put this publication out every month. I personally am thankful for all of the feedback you have provided us over the past three years so that we could continue to improve and cater our editorial to your interests. Of course we wouldn’t be able to print a free publication of this quality if it wasn’t for the support of our advertisers. If you are thankful for our magazine, then the best way to show it is to support our advertisers. Please frequent their shops and buy their products. And let them know that you appreciate them for supporting THC Magazine. I am incredibly thankful for our hard working staff. It is no small feat to pump out a new magazine every month. The Cannabis Aficionado’s Handbook

This month’s Good Read is for the true cannabis lover in you. It seeks to unlock the secrets of getting the most enjoyment out of your marijuana. This short but informative guide will have you using all of your senses to experience our favorite plant. Mitch Shenassa is the founder of Incredibowl Industries, co-host of the cannabis-themed Adam Dunn Show and Editor of KindReviews. com. He includes a glossary of terms that you’ll find throughout the book. Included are phrases like “capitated trichome”—defined as trichomes with heads protruding upwards from the plant’s surface—that even some professionals may not recognize. This book will add at least one new phrase to your vocabulary—luxury cannabis. That is what you are learning to appreciate and what the author luxuriously defines with every line. With so much focus on the subtle nuances of every cannabis experience, it would make a great textbook for the cannabis industry. I especially enjoyed how Shenassa weaves in research while explaining different aspects. On the subject of describing the subjective effects of cannabis, he refers to a scientific monograph created in 1971 by studying 150 experienced cannabis users. Reading that report—entitled “On Being Stoned”-- is now on my must list.
Shenassa wrote the Handbook from a connoisseur’s point of view, but it can have wider applications. As I was reading, I couldn’t help but wish that everyone working in the cannabis industry—especially budtenders—would read and memorize it. While some ganjapreneurs see only dollar signs, businesses that truly know their product shine more brightly. Savvy cannabis consumers would also be well-served by taking lessons. All it takes is a single dispensary visit or glance at the ads in this magazine to see that prices vary. If this book illustrates one thing clearly, it’s that cannabis has moved far beyond take-what-you-get as a product. Next time you’re deciding whether to buy an eighth or a quarter, wouldn’t it be nice to know if the quality matches the price? The book is a quick read at 82 pages, including the appendix with a 20-step process for enjoying luxury cannabis. Shenassa accounts for every action from opening the jar and smelling the flower, to rolling and lighting the joint, to exhaling and enjoying the experience. This got me excited because people were actually taking steps to help themselves. I also found that these same people loved educating their friends online about their healthy choices. I thought it was just a matter of time before consumers started doing the same thing with their skin care products. Denver’s Street Art scene to explode over the past few years and it’s because these artists are no longer seen as criminals defacing property but they are being viewed for what they actually are – artists. From better-than-usual graffiti to beautiful, meaningful murals plastered on the side of business’ buildings, one can’t help but notice all the amazing artwork going up all over The Mile High City. Denver’s Street Art scene has exploded in the past few years. Big names like David Choe, Mars-1, Damon Soule and locals such as Gamma Costa and Mark Graves, among so many other amazing artists have made a big impact on Denver’s ever-growing art culture. The boys of the Furtherrr Collective showed Cultivate’s South Denver location lots of love buy covering the east and west sides of the building with their talent. Mars-1, Damon Soule and Oliver Vernon painted an epic psychedelic mural on the east side, while Just Lovato, Joe Hengst and NoMe Edonna created an ode to

nature’s ironic beauty on the west side. Both pieces are absolutely captivating, as is all the street art coming up around Denver. David Choe has put his brush to many surfaces in Denver. From Denver’s International Airport to 16th Street Mall to park benches, his colorful murals are vibrantly eye catching. Chris Dyer’s Positive Creations mural on the side of Knew Conscious Gallery in North Denver is playful as it pops with color. The RiNo district in general is out-of-control with street art awesomeness. Murals sprawl throughout alleyways and engulfing parking lots. Artist Gamma Costa is one of Denver’s very best local artists. His works displayed all over the city are emotional and realistic. From Denver to LA to New York, artists are paving the way for a whole different way to look at “graffiti” if you can even call it that anymore. This article surely doesn’t even come close to naming every artist who has contributed to Denver’s amazing, growing street art community, but that doesn’t mean our hats don’t go off to them too. Thanks for helping make Denver an even more beautiful place to live!

We stopped by Physician Preferred Products in Northglenn for some flower and decided to try something new. Right away Epic Edibles caught my attention because I couldn’t remember seeing them anywhere else before. The bud tender let me know that they were infused with product from their grow. That sold me right away and I was very excited to give them a try. One of Epic Edible’s products that we tried was the Epic Drops. They are bitesized gummies that are infused with 10mg of THC per gummy. There are ten of these epic delicious drops per bottle. This batch was made with PPP’s Indica strain Grape God. Not many companies do strain specific edibles, so it’s nice to see them when available. The drops are the perfect size and dosage for people new to edibles and for those who love gummies. One thing that really impressed us was there was little to no hash oil taste with their product. It was a nice balance of orange flavoring and oil. reviewed by Monocle Man If you are a coffee lover, run out and get one of these bars! Lucky for me I LOVE coffee and I had the opportunity to try both the medical and recreational Affogato bars. The Medical Affogato bar is chocolate latte flavored with espresso beans and a caramel wwirl. The Recreational bar is vanilla latte flavored with espresso beans and a caramel swirl. Both are quite delicious. The chocolate melts in your mouth followed by the decadent crunch of the espresso beans. The caramel swirl adds a light caramel taste that compliments the other flavors perfectly. These babies are gourmet. Not only do they taste amazing but they are quite effective. I ate a small piece of each bar and waited about an hour. After that hour I was definitely feeling the effects. Being a person that is in the featherweight class of edible consumption, I don’t usually eat more than 25mg at a time. Since these bars are marked and easily broken up, it was so simple to measure out the correct dose for myself. (Even though I wanted to eat all of both bars, yum!) Incredibles has outdone themselves! reviewed by Samuel Aaron Dabby’s 420 Roll from Tincture Belle packs a substantial punch at 200mg of infused hash oil per package. I would suggest to a lower tolerance consumer to use caution with this product, perhaps a nibble here and there throughout the day for an extended release effect. For those with a higher tolerance to edibles, eating the whole bar is still quite the endeavor, producing a relaxing high that is sustained for hours on end. It’s great for a rainy day where all you really want to do is curl up and watch movies. The bar itself is reminiscent of the classic “Payday” candy bar, salted nuts covering the exterior of a caramel covered marshmallow fluff. It was delicious, with a subtle cannabis aftertaste. I would suggest it for relief of physical pain and feelings of anxiety. It is a potently packed sweet treat that you may want to save for a special occasion rather than take on a daily basis. Hempy Apple Crumble Serves 6-8 Ingredients:
For the crust: 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 1 stick cold butter 1/4 cup cold milk beaten + 1 egg yolk For the apples: 2 tablespoons (15gr) granulated sugar zest of half a lemon 2-3 medium apples, Honeycrisp work wonderful with this For the hemp seed topping: 1/4 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold 3 tablespoons raw hemp seeds Whipped cream, optional
Directions:
Place salt in an electric mixer bowl. Slowly add sugar and flour and mix well until combined. Add the egg yolk, milk mixture and mix until incorporated. Shape dough into a ball and flatten into a disc. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least two hours. Overnight is preferred.
Apple Hemp Smoothie recipe and photo from Happy Hemp
Makes 1 large or 2 small smoothies
Ingredients:
1 green apple, quartered 1 banana 1/2 cup Greek yogurt, plain 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons Happy Hemp seeds 1/4 cup almond milk 4 ice cubes
After the dough has been refrigerated, place the dough in between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it out to about 1/4-inch thick round. Place in a 9-inch tart pan. Trim the edges. Prick the dough with a fork and refrigerate 30 minutes up to 2 hours.
Almond, Cranberry, Hemp Seed Green Beans Serves 4-6 Ingredients:
1 lb green beans, washed 1 tabelspoon white balsamic vinegar 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon Mrs. Dash 3 tablespoons shelled hemp seeds 4 tablespoons sliced almonds 3 tablespoons dried cranberries 2 cloves garlic, chopped
Directions:
In a large cassarole dish, evenly coat the green beans with balsamic, olive oil, hemp hearts and Mrs. Dash. Sprinkle the almonds and garlic, bake at 350°F until done and green beans are tender. Top with dried cranberries.
Preheat oven to 350°F and position a rack in the middle. For the apples: In a small bowl, combine the sugar and lemon zest and rub together thoroughly. Peel, core and thinly slice the apples. Arrange loosely in the tart pan. For the topping: In a medium bowl combine (hands work best for this) sugar, butter, and hemp seeds until the mixture looks coarse. Spread over the apple. Bake tart for 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool to room temp. Top with whipped cream if desired.
Fluffy Mashed Potatoes Serves 6-8 Ingredients:
3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes 1/2 cup hemp milk, room temperature 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3/4 teaspoon + 1 teaspoon Himalayan salt 3-4 grinds of fresh black pepper
Directions:
Prepapare potatoes by peeling off some of the skins and cutting them into 1 ½ inch chunks.
Fill a large pot with potatoes, cover with water and a teaspoon of salt. Cover and bring to boil.
Once the water comes to a boil, lower the heat to simmer. Cook for 13 minutes or until soft. Drain. Return to pot. Using a potato masher, start to smooth big chunks. Add hemp milk, olive oil, salt and pepper. Continue to mash until fluffy. Add milk, salt and pepper as needed for desired consistency and taste. Serve with garnishes such as butter, sour cream, scallions and bacon.
Directions:
Blend all ingredients in blender. Pour into a glass and garnish with additional hemp seeds and/or cinnamon.

Incredibles Innovation Top edible company aims to raise bar on extraction technology by DJ Reetz

Incredibles may soon emerge in the world of high-end extractors with a brand new closed-loop extraction system of their own design. The company has already started to sell the extraction system, which comes in a variety of configurations capable of handling anywhere from a quarter ounce all the way up to eight pounds of cannabis. The sleek system is built completely up to the strictest of regulatory standards, and meets all of the latest health, safety and MED regulations, says Incredibles’ Creative Director Derek Cumings. “It’s a truly unique option in the extraction world,” says Cumings. The design came about after years of making due with less than ideal systems, says Cumings. “From the very beginning we were trying out all the closed loops.” Cumings, who has been working with Incredibles since 2010, felt that the other options on the market weren’t meeting the needs of the growing company. Having tried out several different systems, both during his time with Incredibles and throughout his prior experience in the cannabis industry, he decided to apply his decade of extraction experience and come up with his own. At first, this meant a mutually beneficial partnership with a company already making extractors, an arrangement that would allow his team at Incredibles to provide much needed real world feedback to the manufacturers while putting the extraction team on the cutting edge. But after struggling with many of the new models, Cumings says he decided it would be better to just move the design and manufacturing in house. “It was taking a lot of the manufacturing out of our hands, and a lot of the quality control,” he says. The team set about creating their own machine, one that would be built from the ground up by cannabis extractors, for cannabis extractors. A rough sketch soon turned into sophisticated design models compiled by an engineer, and the finished prototype soon followed. Incredibles now has a capable machine shop attached to their lab in southwest Denver, employing a professional welder to make expert welds, and the finished product is quite literally a shining testament to the expertise of all those involved in its design and fabrication. The model sits only a few feet tall depending on configuration, allowing for tubes of plant matter of varying size as well as easy disassembly. At a glance the design might not look too different from other closed-loop systems, but there are a few small differences that may give it an edge For instance, butane that is flushed across the plant matter is injected into the cylinder via a dispersed head that forces it evenly across the interior, rather than creating a stream through a path of least resistance in middle of the plant matter as some models (as well as the dreaded open blasting) do. The system can also be hooked up to a nitrogen tank, allowing for cold pressurized butane. If all goes well, Cumings says the system has an 85 to 90 percent butane recovery rate. The collection chamber can even be detached and placed directly into a freezer for de-waxing. Cumings says their system is already in place not just at Incredibles, but also at several local labs, as well as independent caregivers. A model has even been sold to a company in California. It’s all part of Cumings’ desire to keep moving forward, to keep developing the next big thing in cannabis. “We’ve been stagnant in a lab that wasn’t as focused on [research and development],” says Cumings of past experiences with companies that were happy to sit on their laurels. “Now we’re back in an open environment where R&D is encouraged.” With a line of extracts launching soon, Incredibles will no doubt continue to be one of the companies leading the scene in Denver. “Originality is what’s going to lead this game,” says Cumings.

First Ever Hemp Harvest Awards Ushering in the new age of American Hemp by DJ Reetz
In celebration of the first legal hemp harvest in the United States in over 70 years, Grow Hemp Colorado convened the first annual Hemp Harvest Awards and Festival on a small plot of land on the edge of Boulder. A small crowd took to the field flanked by vendor booths, centered round a rustic stage decorated with drying hemp stalks. The lowkey event might not have seemed like the kind of revelry that should accompany the rebirth of one of America’s most important crops, but the event drew a who’s who of the Colorado hemp scene. One part award ceremony, one part festival, a wealth of vendors were on hand to provide a plethora of hemp products and services, as well as activists who fought to bring the plant back into the realm of legality in Colorado. With awards ranging from “most acreage planted,” which went handily to maverick farmer Ryan Loflin, who this year cut down his second hemp crop, to “most helpful Federal official” presented to none other than Rep. Jared Polis. “It’s exciting to see this newly legalized industry taking off here in Colorado,” said Polis during his acceptance speech. Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett was also on hand to accept an award for “most supportive county DA/law enforcement.” “One of the things I’m really proud about in Boulder, we really are trend setters for the rest of the state,” said Garnett. “To have another crop to support our farming families is really outstanding.” But the event wasn’t just a celebration of the success here in Colorado and the people who brought it about; one of the keynote speakers was Lakota activist Alex Whiteplume, who spoke about the ongoing struggles of the Lakota people as well as the environmental issues tied to the them. Attendees were welcome to browse the vendor tents, where purveyors sold products of all kinds that contained or were related to Hemp. Lotions, salves, and soaps were popular items, as were various pieces of hemp ware. Several food trucks also offered a variety of hempcontaining menu options, including hemp burgers, tacos, zucchini bread, cookies, and even hemp juice for those so inclined. “There’s enough science to back up how good hemp is for the world, we don’t have to make stuff up,” said Sylvia Wagner. Wagner was there promoting Hemp University, a school that will hopefully have accredited programs for all things relating to hemp growing, processing and business by next year. Other vendors were selling hemp seeds, making the event one of the few places farmers could acquire seed without the hassle of importation. “Finding or accessing viable seed has been very difficult,” says Veronica Carpio, the event’s organizer. Carpio says the event gave farmers a chance to access the largest variety of seeds in one place, and was home to the first CBD oil extracted from domestic hemp grown right here in Colorado. “It proved that there is an interest in hemp from a variety of people,” says Carpio of the event. “It shows there’s money to earn in hemp right now, not in ten years.” The celebration of Colorado’s groundbreaking hemp harvest will surely not be the last, and hemp won’t be leaving the scene anytime soon. “There will be many years to come after this,” says Carpio.

ampton Yount is everywhere these days. He made his Comedy Central debut on Adam Devine of Workaholics show “Adam Devine’s”, he was on Last Comic Standing and he was just on Conan O’Brien. And that’s all in the last year or so.
Hampton displayed top-shelf headlining showmanship at Andy Juett and Kayvan Khalatbari’s Sexpot Comedy showcase in Denver, CO in October. He set the tone by immediately smoking a premium joint at the airport Baja Fresh with Andy and pretty quickly ascertained that Juett was a crazy young person. “Look at your lime green fucking glasses,” he said. He’s right. I am a crass, young person. Game respects game. Or in this case, young, prolific weirdo respects young prolific weirdo. Christ. Just read this nonsense. Andy Juett: Hampton, you’ve been way out front on caterpillar immersion therapy. Here’s a quote from something I made up you said at some point, ‘I want people to feel warmth in their lives. I want them to take a full breath and just sort of reflect to themselves, “YEAH. I can DO this.” That’s the type of heart sense I want people to have. Diabetes and Medical Marijuana
Cannabis studies show promise in treatment by Dr Nicola Davies
In the U.S., over 29.1 million people are currently diagnosed with diabetes. This is almost 10 percent of the population. Furthermore, two out of three of these people will die from the condition or the many complications that arise from it. This has prompted researchers to look into how medical marijuana can help treat diabetes and its associated complications. Type 1 diabetes, often termed juvenile diabetes, is a genetic disorder where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin - a hormone that allows the body to process the sugars from carbohydrates. Sufferers of Type 1 diabetes often take multiple injections of insulin each day. On the other hand, Type 2 diabetes (also known as adult onset diabetes) is a disorder where the body doesn’t process insulin properly, often signaling the pancreas to make more insulin than required. This is the most common type of diabetes. Medical marijuana has been the focus of several studies examining potential diabetes treatment. One such study, published in the American Journal of Medicine, found that active users of marijuana had a more productive carbohydrate metabolism than people who didn’t use marijuana.1 Murray Mittleman, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard and author of the study, said, “[Marijuana users’] fasting insulin levels were lower, and they appeared

to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to maintain a normal blood-sugar level.” The study comprised over 4,657 men and women participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2010 - 48 percent had smoked marijuana at least once and 12 percent were current cannabis smokers. The researchers controlled for other factors that might impact diabetes risk, such as gender, income, alcohol use, cigarette smoking and physical activity. Even after these adjustments, the current marijuana users showed fasting insulin levels that were 16 percent lower than those of former users or those who had never used the drug. These findings are applicable to both types of diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, a lower fasting level might eliminate the need for an insulin injection at that time. While injections wouldn’t be completely eliminated, it could decrease the number needed per day. For those with Type 2 diabetes, being less resistant to the insulin could help control the advancing of the disease by improving the body’s ability to manage sugar levels naturally. Some of the complications that can arise from Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are
neuropathy, glaucoma, high blood pressure, and peripheral vascular disease. Medical marijuana has been studied to see its effects on each of these conditions. Neuropathy, a nerve damage contracted from certain diseases or disorders, is found in 60 to 70 percent of all people with diabetes. More specifically, there are four types of diabetes-related neuropathy: peripheral (located in the hands, arms, legs and feet), autonomic (which affects the nerves that control blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and the heart), focal (specific nerve damage to the head, torso, and leg), and proximal (sometimes called diabetic amyotrophy and usually centralized on one side of the body in the hips, thighs, and buttocks). Several studies have shown vaporized cannabis to reduce pain and slow the advancing nerve damage of all four types of neuropathy. In some types, there was more than a 30 percent improvement without any significant impact on daily functioning or cognitive abilities.2 Glaucoma is another complication that can arise with diabetes. The general term for glaucomarelated complications is retinopathy. People who have diabetes are 40 percent more likely to contract glaucoma than people without the disease. Glaucoma occurs when pressure builds inside the eye, eventually cutting off blood flow and damaging the optic nerve. Vision is gradually lost due to the continued pressure and nerve damage.
narrow, weak blood vessels, in addition to accelerated fat levels in the blood, and higher blood pressure which dramatically affects the rate of developing atherosclerosis. All of this exponentially increases the chance of angina, heart attacks, and strokes. Medical marijuana isn’t recommended for sufferers of peripheral vascular disease. Although studies have shown that medical marijuana can significantly decrease angina, it can also cause acute coronary events. The increased heart rate, combined with the combustion inhalation of smoke, is thought to be one of the main reasons for the possible coronary complications and the lack of doctor recommendation. This has begun a debate of the use of synthetic cannabinoids, like Sativex and Marinol, versus hemp oil and vaporized medical marijuana. Having received Drug Enforcement Administration approval of both synthetics, Sativex is approved by several countries as a treatment for pain and nausea of cancer patients. Marinol has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an anti-nausea solution for people with AIDS. Both synthetics have more severe side-effects than medical marijuana; thus, controversy exists about whether their use is as effective as vaporized medical marijuana or hemp oil. Neither Sativex nor Marinol have been studied for peripheral vascular disease or diabetes control.

Medical marijuana is already being recommended for glaucoma sufferers, as it can directly reduce the inflammation caused by the nerve damage and increased blood flow. However, since the relief is only temporary, some doctors believe that people need to partake every 2 or 3 hours (around the clock) to maintain a consistent eye pressure. This could lead to other health complications, making doctors more hesitant to recommend it. There is also a fear that glaucoma sufferers, without first consulting a doctor, might choose to self-medicate due to the belief that ‘it can’t hurt.’ Marijuana does help ease the pain, but glaucoma is a progressive disease with no cure. Without a doctor’s supervision, those who choose to selfmedicate can harm the results of tests that could detect or track the progression of the disease.

High blood pressure is often a complication of Type 2 diabetes and, although medical marijuana does lower blood pressure, it also briefly elevates heart rate after smoking. As a result, marijuana isn’t recommended for those with pre-existing heart conditions. However, studies have shown that prolonged marijuana users have a tolerance for these side-effects and have suffered no adverse effects of the briefly quickened heart rates. Peripheral vascular disease is caused by atherosclerosis - the process in which fatty material builds up inside the arteries over time. This fatty material hardens as it mixes with calcium, scar tissue, and other materials, creating plaque on the arterial walls. This plaque can inhibit or completely block blood flow through the arteries. People with high blood sugar levels caused by diabetes can have
There are many unknowns about the effects of medical marijuana for diabetes prevention and control, and studies are becoming harder to fund as the controversy of legality in the U.S. continues. With mid-term elections approaching, politicians seem to be wary of openly supporting legalized marijuana or studies for its various capabilities. However, research has already shown medical marijuana to be effective in treating not only diabetes, but also some, if not all, of its possible complications.

rom the dawn of civilization cannabis and hemp and have given medicine, food, rope, clothes, paper, pottery and fuel to emerging cultures throughout China, India and the Mediterranean. No other plant has been a more resilient to our legislative distain or supportive as a companion to mankind, shaping our history and hopefully our future. Our hemp history timeline focus now turns from Asia and India to The Middle East, Europe and Northern Africa.
150 AD
What cannabis historians know of early hemp is found in many scholarly works on agriculture and medicine and substantiated via modern anthropological research. Trade routes brought both hemp and marijuana to the Mediterranean and into Europe during the middle ages. Hemp becomes the world’s largest agricultural crop, providing materials to support civilization’s most important industries: Agriculture, ship building, trading, providing food, medicine, fiber and lamp oil fuel.
At least one account exists of a Jewish woman given cannabis by her doctor to ease the pain related with childbirth. Many biblical scholars maintain that the Israelites made extensive use of cannabis, taking their evidence from passages in the Old Testament. Some scholars maintain that ‘calamus’, kaneh-bosm, in Hebrew mentioned in the Song of Solomon is cannabis.
30 BC to 200 AD
The fall of the Romans fractionizes the empire and smaller kingdoms rise to govern the land. Hemp rope and fabric are utilized thought Asia, North Africa and Europe. In The French queen Arnegunde is buried in hemp cloth shroud. Arnegunde’s grave is discovered in 1959 and pieces of the burial cloth are still intact. Cloth made from a mixture of hemp and flax fibers were common during this era.
The Roman Empire extends from The Middle East across to Britain including Gaul (modern France), Spain and Northern Africa. A time of peace and commerce under Roman rule, hemp and cannabis are cultivated for both industrial and medicinal effect. In Pliny the Elder’s The Natural History (Naturalis Historia, 79 AD), writes about hemp rope and marijuana’s natural analgesic effects. Many other medicinal texts (or pharmacopoeia) hail cannabis’s restorative effects, and also list their descriptions of preparation and use. Pliny’s notation validates this. “The roots [of the cannabis plant] boiled in water ease cramped joints, gout too and similar violent pain.” 40 AD Lucius Junius Columela of Spain, was a Roman soldier and farmer who penned an extensive 12 volume agricultural work, The De re Rustica. Columela’s work outlined the methods of hemp cultivation of the time. The De re Rustica could be considered the first “grow book” of the Roman Era. 70 AD Pedanius Dioscorides of Anazarbus, a Greek physician, surgeon and herbalist catalogued over 600 medicinal plants, included a detailed description of cannabis in the material medica. Published about AD 70 it became the most important medical tome of the next 1500 years. Dioscorides postulated that “the plant (hemp), both kannabis emero and kannabis agria (the male and female of the plant were cited) in the making of rope also produced a juice that was used to treat earache and suppress sexual longing.” Extensive, although not clinical research regarding medicinal extracts from hemp have not proved or disproved this theory. 128 AD Claudius Galen, also of Greece, often called the ‘father of physiology and internal medicine’ prescribes cannabis for its medicinal value.
Hemp rope appears in Britain. Ancient mariners from Germany, France and Viking lands dominate the seas with ships outfitted with hemp sails, rope, nets, and caulking. Hemp shoes and ruminates of clothes from this era are found on ships and at burial sites. 200 AD Chinese surgeon Hua T’o uses marijuana as an anesthetic and also lists it in the first Eastern pharmacopoeia. 300 AD
570 AD
600 AD Sanskrit writers in India record a recipe for pills of gaiety, a combination of hemp and sugar. 751 AD Isochanvre, a French building material made from hemp herds mixed with lime was used to reinforce the Dordogne Bridge in the south of France around 751 AD. The lime petrifies into a mineral state with the hemp supports the bridge. 1150 AD Arabic merchants capture Chinese craftsman and learn to make paper from hemp, starting Europe’s first paper mill. Stronger than paper from wood pulp, hemp paper was used for Bibles, books, maps, contracts and money. The English word ‘Hempe’ is first noted in a dictionary in 1137. Its definition explains the plant as useful for paper, medicine and food for both humans and domesticated animals. Around the same time hemp seed pulp is mixed with milk to make hemp butter. 1215 AD The Magna Charta is printed on hemp paper under the authority of King John of England. This historic document limits the sovereignty of the King of England and outlines the rights of the citizens.

1300 AD The decline of the Roman Empire promulgates conflict between smaller kingdoms and the beginning of the Middle Ages. Religious factors have played an important part in the spread of cannabis from the Far East and India to the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. The peoples who embraced Islam found in cannabis an ideal substitute for alcohol, which was strictly forbidden to Muslims. 1378 AD The Emir of Joneima in Arabia, Sudoumi Shekhoumi, made the first recorded attempt to ban cannabis. The Emir mandated that all cannabis plants cultivated in his kingdom be destroyed. Using cannabis during this time would result in the painful forced extraction of one’s teeth. But citizens continued to grow and enjoy cannabis and 15 years later the Emir conceded that `the use of this substance in Arabian territory had increased’ while the law had been in effect. 1484 AD Pope Innocent VIII (who was anything but) outlawed the use of hashish, a concentrated form of cannabis. While, hemp and cannabis cultivation continued because of its economic value, severe measures were levied against anyone caught using the plant medicinally or for its pleasurable aspects. 1550 AD Francois Rabelais, a theologian and physician of the late middle ages had focused botanical and mystical attention to cannabis as a profound healing herb. This mythical tail (1490-1553) offers a full account of hemp which he called “the herb Pantagruelion” This descriptive political and tale outlines the travels of a giant named Panetagruelion, who was named after the cannabis plant. Excepts offer some insights to his passion for cannabis. Regarding the physical appearance of the cannabis cultivars. “The leaves sprout out all round the stalk at equal distances, to the number of five or seven at each level; and it is by special favor of Nature that they are grouped in these two odd numbers, which are both divine and mysterious. The scent is strong, and unpleasant to delicate nostrils. Rabelais goes on to describe the domestic uses of the cannabis plant during this time. “Without this herb, kitchens would be detested, the tables of dining rooms abhorred, although there were great plenty and variety of most dainty and sumptuous dishes of meat set down upon them; and the choicest beds also...” Rabelais was so enamored with hemp that in his estimation it stood at the very pinnacle of plant life: “in this pantagruel ion (hemp and cannabis) have I found so much efficacy and energy, so much completeness and excellency, so much exquisiteness and rarity, and so many admirable effects and operations of a transcendent nature So ends the tale of hemp and cannabis history of the late Middle Ages. Almost every aspect of daily life is entwined with the cannabis plant. From the rope used to lift water from the well to the shrouds of royalty this humble companion plant has allowed mankind to archive organized civilization. From Microsoft to Marijuana Todd Mitchem is helping bring cannabis companies to the next level by Sam Ruderman
Todd Mitchem is a cannabis consultant and co-founder of Cannasearch, a company that helps people find jobs in the industry. He works with cannabis businesses all over the world, helping to restructure, legitimize, and create mainstream brands. Todd has made multiple TV appearances including CNBC’s “Marijuana in America” and is considered an expert in all things cannabis. I sat down with Todd to see if he could share some of his wisdom and experience with the readers of THC Magazine. THC Mag: Todd, what did you do before entering the cannabis industry? How did your career transition into helping cannabis businesses and becoming a spokesperson for the industry? TM: For the last 10 years I worked as a corporate leader and Senior Vice President of Business Development for a culture and management consulting firm serving major brands, including Anheuser-Busch, Microsoft, H&R Block, Purina and Yum! Additionally, I worked with some of the nation›s prominent business leaders to coach them on dynamic leadership, structural excellence and strategic business applications. I literally went into a company and helped them change many aspects of the company. I loved that business, and yet after ten years it was time for a change. When I got into cannabis it was as a consultant. My job was to guide brands toward national presence while building company infrastructure. Being a spokesperson comes naturally for me. I am passionate and have used cannabis for 20 years, mostly hidden. To be a spokesperson is just logical for that

reason. I love this industry, this plant and all the people who work in it. It is so badass to think I am a part of a new emerging American industry and that we are making history. We are not just an industry, we are a wellness movement! THC: Other than America, where is the cannabis movement flourishing? TM: One of the offices I worked from was in Canada. Canada has a huge cannabis loving population and is making great strides in medicinal innovation. Of course Israel is also a leader with incredible research. THC: Where is the most interesting place you have worked and what was your task there? TM: Too many to mention. The most unique place I have ever worked was for Microsoft in India where I worked to educate a team of 300 engineers. THC: What has been your most interesting job working as a cannabis consultant? TM: I think the new work I am doing for MiNDFUL (formerly Gaia) is by far the most interesting so far in cannabis. Helping change this brand to a new name like MiNDFUL is truly rewarding. I love the people here and feel they are literally on the cutting edge of business in cannabis. Aside from that, being one of the

only companies with a female CEO is exciting and progressive. Meg Sanders allows us all to do amazing things on behalf of the brand. I love to push the envelope. THC: How does a person, after a long and fruitful career, become successful in consulting? TM: If you are an expert at something you can be a consultant. The next piece is centered around, can you teach people what is in your head? If you can give great advice, not get lost in your ego and stay calm under pressure, you can be a consultant. By the way, it helps if you are disciplined enough to work from home without smoking weed all day. When you are self-employed the only person to motivate you is you.
THC: You describe the cannabis industry as “the dot-com era slammed into the Industrial Revolution moving at the speed of light”. In your opinion, what is the best way for someone new to the industry to climb aboard such a fast moving train?
packaging? I love weed too, but I don’t want to trash the planet or my body while consuming it. We are in a very special time in history, operating in one of the most heavily regulated business environments on earth. We owe it to the consumer to get it right, to be mindful about all we do. THC: What are the next five states that you believe will be home to next big waves in the industry? TM: New York, Florida and Illinois will all be massive in terms of market opening. We are holding a CannaSearch Job Fair in New York early next year and I am already getting swamped by people saying they will attend. This movement is going everywhere. THC: Will there be a Budweiser of cannabis in the future? There will for sure be a “Budweiser of cannabis” someday. It is like any industry. A giant will emerge. Many will. We may see big “other” companies come into the space and that will be a good thing. Just like any industry we need contract in the marketplace so the consumer knows the difference between good and bad. The consumer will drive the market like in any industry. True market leaders however must realize they are dealing with a wellness product and the consumer knows this The consumers won’t allow the industry as it grows to slack off. Time to get our acts together. THC: Any final thoughts you would like to share with the readers of THC Magazine? TM: This is not only a new industry....it’s a new way of doing industry. We are in some ways tipping business on its head. And we ain’t going away.
TM: ABSOLUTELY! The industry is on fire and not slowing down anytime soon. If you are getting into the industry you MUST be ready to be a self-starter, work hard, long hours, and be ready to do ten jobs at once. Be ready to adapt to change fast. Also, in cannabis, you only have weeks not months to make key decisions. Therefore, you need to be ready to justify your ideas fast. What I love most about the industry is that everyone in it, young, old, college grads or not, and every type of person is accepted because of their productivity and ideas. It is an amazingly open environment. THC: In any new and booming industry throughout history, many businesses will be established in the first few years and then die off at a relatively fast rate. Is the cannabis industry different? TM: I think you are right. Very few people know who Netscape was, but definitely know who Microsoft is. This is true of cannabis. Eventually very big players with a ton of revenue will be allowed in and that will be a game changer for everyone. I hope the small shops can survive this change by creating products and growing special elite plants that set them apart. Big companies may be purchased or finally go public. At some point consumer safety will become more prevalent as the Attorney Generals in each sate become more cannabis savvy. Businesses who hope to thrive in the new cannabis world will need things like processes, structure, leadership, budgets and consumer safety. Brands will win the day also, so making great brands will be key. THC: What are the biggest obstacles for the industry, speaking in political, social, and ideological terms? Are people in other parts of America and the world ready for this? What kind of backlash have we already seen and what should we expect in the future? TM: These can all be summed up this way: we must focus on product quality, safety and education. As an industry we won’t be able to rest on the idea that this is weed so we should just grow a ton of it and make a bunch of money. People ingest this plant, in different forms, and as such should demand that the industry keep these products safe. I have friends who won’t buy anything unless it is from a Whole Foods, but will then go out and vape, or consume a product filled with fertilizer, residual solvents, and sometimes glue. That happens because the consumer doesn’t know what they don’t know. Some companies however are thinking about this. They are going to emerge as the true market leaders in the next couple of years with products not made cheaply but rather made with the idea of quality in mind. In the meantime consumers should ask better questions like, what fertilizer is in this, what is in your oil, and can I recycle the

Legalization Marches On by Rick Macey
The people’s march toward cannabis legalization continues. By the time you read this, five more states will have addressed fully legal adult use or decriminalization. Hopefully this analysis will help you make sense of the recent ballot initiatives once the results are in. First, a bit of perspective, especially if you’re new to the cannabis rights movement or were a child in the 1990s. California, the USA’s third largest state, its most populous, and its single largest economy, set the stage for today’s developments with Proposition 215, a referendum to legalize medicinal marijuana. It passed in1996. In fact, a medical marijuana card in California is known as a 215. Cannabis activists who have lived, worked, and have family in California - such as your humble narrator - expected 2010 to be the breakthrough year for adult use. We held a slight edge in the polls before then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed an executive order decriminalizing an ounce or less - effectively reducing the misdemeanor charge of possession to the status of a traffic ticket. Savvy politics and a killer blow to California’s full legalization effort, which fell short by a few percentage points. Fortunately, Colorado and Washington State came through two years later in 2012, building on legal medicinal use in the 20 states that followed Cali’s lead over the next 16 years. And adult use legalization seems to be following a similar pattern, with Colorado leading the way. I disagree with The New York Times - although it’s wonderful to have the world’s most influential newspaper on our side - and believe Colorado’s free market system is clearly the best model - not Washington. That said, let’s get to it, since President Barack Obama said marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol. Never thought I’d live long enough to hear a president say that.
Oregon - Yes on 91: Legalizing and regulating marijuana for adults There is everything to love about Oregon’s Measure 91, which would regulate, tax and legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older. As the Times editorial board recently stated - echoing arguments and using phrases I’ve been using for nearly 30 years - “Decades of arresting people for buying, selling and using marijuana have hurt more than helped society, and minority communities have been disproportionately affected by the harsh criminal penalties of prohibition.” Put another way, as Portland newspaper The Oregonian editorialized in August, the measure would “be worth supporting for reasons of honesty and convenience alone.”

Seriously. You ever been to Oregon? If so, you ever had trouble scoring high-grade cannabis, probably from Humboldt County, California? Not likely. What it achieves strategically is a solid USA West Coast for adult use. Where it falls short is in adopting Washington State’s governmental regulatory structure. Please, I know that investors and business people are more reliable than politicians and bureaucrats. Colorado is the cannabis business model of today and the future, and I hope both states steer in our direction. Two retired citizens groups, the City Club of Portland, several unions, several racial justice groups, a former state Supreme Court judge, and former chief federal prosecutor have endorsed Measure 91. This means age and political demographics are tilting to our side, at least in Oregon. And in case you’re an investor or business person reading THC, it’s the Oregon Liquor Control Commission that will regulate marijuana as it does alcohol, and will review tax rates, which could be counterproductive in an economic meltdown such as 2008. The tax is initially set at $35 per ounce for flowers and $10 per ounce for leaves and should allow for prices low enough to compete with street dealers. Props to the Sheriff of King County, Washington, which includes the greater Seattle area. John Urquhart has taken the unprecedented step of endorsing Oregon’s legalization. He supported I-502 in Washington in 2012. “Month by month, tax dollars are going to schools and police, not the drug cartels,” Urquhart says in an ad from Oregon’s Yes on 91 campaign. Wasteful arrests are way down. DUIs are down. Drug prevention programs are getting funds … The evidence keeps coming in: Our new approach is working” An ad featuring Urquhart was part of a $2 million TV blitz. It was one of three spots rolled out featuring law enforcement officers, a nod to LEAP. In 36 years of law enforcement, Urquhart has worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, master police officer, narcotics detective, public information officer and administrative aide. In 2012, he became the sheriff of King County, which is home to 1.9 million people and includes Seattle.
Alaska - Yes on 2: Legalizing and regulating marijuana for adults Fully adult legal, and tax marijuana at $50 per ounce wholesale. It is already legal for Alaskans to possess small amounts of marijuana, and one in five adults admit to regularly smoking cannabis in their homes. Common sense should prevail.
Decriminalizing marijuana
The best argument in favor of legalization is Colorado’s $19 million in adult-use tax revenue through June. States should set their own policies without worrying about the possibility of a crackdown on citizens violating federal law. This is the time. One of the toughest nuts to crack is Florida, the prescription capital of America. Florida - Yes on 2: Legalizing medical marijuana. Odds are you did not watch the debate on Florida TV - NBC affiliate WFLA Ch. 8, which has the third largest audience among local TV stations. In a debate over Amendment 2, the two men talked at one another, not to one another. “It’s a medical issue and it’s an issue of compassion,” said attorney John Morgan, who favors Amendment 2. But Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri resorted to marijuana prohibition scare tactics. He doesn’t dispute the potential medical benefits of marijuana, but raises concerns about the wording of the amendment. “Once it’s there we’re stuck with it,” the sheriff argued.

New York could legalize marijuana in 2015 In an uncommon top-down approach, Democratic State Sen. Liz Krueger will reintroduce the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act during the next legislative session, which begins in January. Krueger’s bill would permit the opening of retail marijuana dispensaries regulated by the State Liquor Authority, establish an excise tax on all marijuana sales, and allow adults to legally possess up to two ounces of marijuana and grow up to six marijuana plants at home for personal use. Krueger introduced a similar bill in 2013 that also aimed to legalize the possession, use and sale of limited amounts of recreational marijuana, but the bill never made it out of committee. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has not supported a bill that legalizes marijuana for recreational use. In January, Cuomo said that Colorado-style legalization in New York is “a nonstarter for me.” Bad judgment.

New York became the 23rd state in the country to legalize medical marijuana in August. Even so, New York, and especially New York City, remain plagued by an inordinate number of low-level marijuana arrests.

The District of Columbia is symbolic and actually weak on cannabis, since the Home Rule Act for the nation’s capital does not allow a tax to be imposed by referendum. Since money talks and bullshit walks, this is a bit of a disadvantage, unless public opinion is solidly on your side, which seems to be true. Initiative 71 would repeal all criminal and civil penalties for personal possession of marijuana and allow limited, private cultivation. People 21 and older could grow up to six plants at home and give away up to one ounce. Now to my beloved state, which still does not realize its power. California - Yes on 47: Ending felony sentencing for nonviolent and low-level drug possession. This is the gradual approach adopted by the ACLU and others in 2010, which as a media and political organizer, I rejected. Live and learn. Consolation prize: California may end felony sentencing for the lowest level, non-violent crimes, permanently reduce incarceration and shift $1 billion in the next five years alone from the state corrections department to K-12 school programs and mental health and drug treatment. This reform maintains the current law for anyone with prior convictions for rape, murder or child molestation. Yes on Prop. 47 is supported by law enforcement leaders, crime victims, teachers, rehabilitation experts, business leaders, faith-based leaders and civil rights organizations, as well as the ACLU of California. But I already mentioned the ACLU. Now to my birth state, New York. I have many friends and colleagues, from

Coats vs. Dish Network Fighting for a patient’s right to work in Colorado by DJ Reetz
On September 30, oral arguments in the Coats vs Dish Network case were held in the Colorado Supreme Court. The case stems from the 2010 firing of Brandon Coats after he tested positive for THC. Coats, who was paralyzed in a car accident when he was a teenager, was a licensed medical marijuana patient at the time of his firing from a Dish Network call center. Thus far, Coats’ lawsuit has been struck down in district court, a decision that was upheld in the Colorado Court of Appeals. The case carries special importance to all gainfully employed marijuana users, as it will likely determine if employers have the legal right to fire users for lawful, off-duty consumption. The crux of Coats’ claim centers on Colorado Lawful Activities Statute, which prohibits employers from firing employees for engaging in legal activities while not at work. The statute is aimed at protecting employees’ right to free speech – so that employees can’t be fired for engaging in political activities that employers disagree with – but it also applies to personal and lifestyle decisions. In the oral arguments, Coats’ attorney and Dish’s legal team were given 30 minutes each to make their case. The Justices at this stage had already received the legal briefs from both sides, so it is important to note that oral arguments serve more as an opportunity for the justices to clarify the arguments than to establish an opinion. Mike Evans, Coats’ attorney, argued his case first with the wheel-chair bound coats in the audience behind him. Despite the amendment to Colorado’s constitution allowing for medical marijuana, Evans did not contend that medical marijuana was a constitutional right, but that this was not necessary for it to be considered lawful activity. Evans also contended that Coats’ position was not hazardous, or an executive position that would require decision making, but, perhaps most importantly, Coats never reported for work while under the influence of marijuana. Evans further claimed that Dish knew of Coats’ status as a medical marijuana patient when he was hired, making their claims of a “zero-tolerance workplace” invalid.
Attorneys for Dish Network then had a half hour to articulate their case for the firing of Coats. Central to their argument was the disputed zero-tolerance drug policy, as well as the dispute that marijuana usage cannot be considered lawful due to its federal status as a schedule 1 controlled substance. Dish’s attorneys also argued that Coats reported to work while under the effects of marijuana based solely on the fact that he benefited from its use while employed, a point that was rebuked by Chief Justice Nancy Rice. “The only thing that can really be said about the facts in this case is that Mr. Coats agrees that at some point he took medical marijuana and it was in his system when he was tested, that’s it,” said Rice.

Dish also argued that amendment 20 provided an affirmative defense for those arrested for marijuana, not expressly making its use lawful activity, a point that was also contended by the justices, who cited the 2000 voters guide and its usage of the word “legalize.” Though oral arguments were brief, the justices have no shortage of information to mull over before making their decisions. “A lot of the hard-hitting punches we wanted to deliver we didn’t get to,” says Evans. Still, to a casual observer, it may seem as though the justices were slightly more critical of the points made by Dish Network. “Dish has not argued this case honorably,” says Evans, citing the changing presentations of the company’s drug policy and the dubious claims that the company must maintain federal drug free standards, as well as the threat of $40,000 in attorney’s fees dish network initially threatened Coats with when he first filed the lawsuit. “I think number one, the justices know they’re full of shit,” he says. One thing Evans seems fairly confident of, however, is that if the ruling does come down in favor of Coats and other medical marijuana patients, Dish Network will take the case to a federal appeals court, where judges will likely be less friendly regarding Colorado’s sensible attitudes toward marijuana.
Evans asked that the justices keep the federal standard of legality out the equation. “Federal law cannot define state law, especially unique state law,” he said. In the case of the state statute, defining lawful activity should remain within state interpretation, he argued.
“If we win at the state Supreme Court, Dish has the money and attitude to appeal,” says Evans. It’s been a long process for Coats and Evans, who have been fighting this battle for four years. “I would prefer to get this over with,” says Evans. “I’m a little worn out.”
“We must always remember that state sovereignty is a fundamental part of this country, and that Colorado has chosen to exercise its healthcare, welfare and police powers by creating these laws,” said Evans.
Hopefully, the justices will have a ruling soon, though the extent of the precedent set is yet to be seen. Whether it will have an impact on employers firing employees for the now legal use of non-medical marijuana may not be determined, though undoubtedly the ruling will be cited when that issue reaches the courts.
Still, Evans conceded that a decision in this case should be narrow, not encompassing hazardous occupations, companies that hold federal contracts, or the now lawful use of marijuana not explicitly deemed medical. “I’m asking that the court start out with baby steps,” says Evans, reflecting later on the proceedings. “I don’t want them to eat the whole enchilada.”
Either way, the ruling will be of great importance to everyone holding a job and using marijuana in any capacity when it eventually comes. “I’m hoping that’s my Christmas present,” says Evans.
