Toast of the Town Jimmy Smith of Phat Daddyz has what the doctor ordered 32

A letter to our readers I love the way every being seems to awaken in the springtime. Maybe it’s the first time you notice the trees are green once again, or that little extra pep everyone seems to have in their step, or just the fact that the days are getting longer—you just can’t help feeling good when spring smiles upon us here in Colorado. Spring is a season for optimists. So let’s infuse some positive thinking into this season. April is Earth Month, and in honor of our beautiful planet we have dedicated this issue to the environmental impact hemp could have if we just gave it the proper chance. Take a look at the amazing possibilities of hemp’s potential in the Seed to Salvation article on page 12. We’ve all heard the expression “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” These are good words to live by most of the time, but hemp shows itself to be the exception to the rule. You can even build your house out of that exception (page 23). The THC team wishes all of you a happy, prosperous, and healthy spring season. Thank you to all of our supporters and fans. Your letters of praise for our inaugural issue have been inspiring. We hope to always infuse something new into your way of thinking every season. That said please take a moment to:

Green Principles An honest look at environmentally-friendly business practices In a world where electronics run rampant and the next new technological wonder lays waste to its patriarchal computer chip in a matter of days, it’s astonishing that people still concern themselves with the well-being of old Mother Earth. Despite the frantic pace of modern life, many local and national organizations have turned about-face to confront and transform the way that industry conducts itself. New Belgium Brewing Company {newbelgium.com}, a Fort Collins-based brewery, could be one of the most cutting-edge green companies out there; after all, even when they emerged as a fledgling brewery in 1989, they recorded environmental stewardship as one of their top core values. They’ve stayed true to their commitment ever since. Back in 1998, the employee-run company voted to become the first brewery in America powered by wind. More recently, they’ve utilized a system that captures and reuses the methanerich gas produced in the brewing process. What’s more, they’ve purchased electric cars in anticipation of a time when renewable resources can provide ample electricity.

New Belgium Brewing Company

Namasté Solar

Namasté Solar {namastesolar.com} has experience in that realm. Their business envisions, engineers, and installs solar panels for both residential and commercial communities in the Denver and Boulder areas. Depending on roof space and orientation, most of their customers can produce 40-70percent of their total electricity, though often the numbers jump closer to 80 and 90-percent. For a residence or business with an enormous electric bill, like a marijuana grow house, that translates to tremendous savings, as these greenhouses must artificially mimic the hot and humid climate in which these plants thrive. The Colorado-based non-profit, Sustainable Living Association {sustainablelivingassociation.org}, offers other ideas to power the coming generations. Year-round, they host a plethora of stimulating workshops in six categories, guiding ways to live an environmentally sound life: Wise Kitchen, Abundant Backyard, Renewable Energy, Sustainable Building, Healthy Home, and Naturally Crafted Series. These range from cheese and soap making, canning, and woodworking for women, to backyard chicken keeping, composting, and natural first aid. Ultimately, their expertise culminates in the annual Sustainable Living Fair, where over 250 exhibitors mingle with the 10,000 attendees in a celebration of all things sustainable. Nationally, a little company based out of Michigan is stirring up bottled water companies. Boxed Water Is Better {boxedwaterisbetter.com} is revamping the business with one little, environmentally friendly change: the water comes in a box, not a plastic bottle. About 76-percent of the box is made from trees, and of those, they all come from certified, well-managed forests. With the bottled water industry valued at over $50 billion and growing, it’s imperative to have an option that leaves fewer carbon footprints than traditional bottles. With these organizations’ successes, it becomes clear that the environmental war is not lost, forgotten, or trampled by corporations. Instead, eco-loving businesses stand for what they believe in—an ethical, sustainable, green way of life.

Product Reviews Apothecanna Extra Strength Pain Crème One word sums up Apothecanna Extra Strength Pain Crème: amazing! This great product relieved my chronic back pain in a hurry and left my skin feeling soft and smooth. The minty scent is intense at first but dissipates quickly, leaving a sweet, refreshing aura. A close friend used it after a minor surgery and it eased the pain and swelling at the surgery site and prevented bruising. I’ve even used it on my aching, tired feet after a night on the town in my dancing shoes. The aching was gone in no time at all and I was ready to dance another day.

CannaPunch OMG Bold If taste were an initial predictor of what I was in for, I would have known right away that the CannaPunch OMG Bold was going to be a good ride. Boasting a fruity flavor with a dry finish—think red wine—and 151mg of THC, this drink sent me reeling. The back pain which started early in the day was noticeably gone, allowing me to carry on with confidence. As the cerebral effects took hold, I decided to pay some bills and return phone calls. After completing a few more chores, I returned to the drink. This time I only took a few more sips before settling into my favorite chair with a good magazine, and another wave of recognizable euphoria washed over me.

Canyon Cultivation Drop It Don’t judge the bottle by its size. Canyon Cultivation’s Drop It packs a powerful punch in a potent, convenient, tiny bottle. With 375mg of THC in each 3ml bottle, this is an innovative tool for medicating. Not your average glycerin tincture, these drops are liquid THC. I eased into them with caution, as one should with any edible, and was able to take five before effects took hold. High in CBDs, Drop It is perfect for pain relief and relaxation, which is exactly what I used it for. The dosage is easy to control, which is one thing I really like about this treatment. The taste is bitter enough to curl your lip but the tingle on your tongue lets you know it’s going to work.

Colorado Grow Corporation’s Moonrock Here’s a revolutionary creation—a genre of hash that is new and nothing short of amazing. This wax is easy on the throat, good to taste, and strain-specific, so the patient can medicate precisely to the root of their ailment. Knowing that hash of this nature generally tests out at 8590-percent, I took hits one at a time, and after about six puffs, I felt precisely why CGC calls this stuff Moonrock. The tiniest bit of this potent hash can literally send you soaring to the moon. Read more on page 20. —Hazy Cakes

White Light healing the reiki way A Japanese healing technique for relaxation and stress reduction, Reiki involves something called “laying on hands,” which finds strength in the idea that the unseen energy that flows through us and gives us life often needs recharging. Locally, Divine White Light Healing {gatekeeperhealing.com} brings this unique healing art to the fore. Here, Reiki Master Rheana Jackson, R.M.T. offers patients relief and treatment for a wide variety of maladies including digestive problems, arthritis, restlessness, back pain, pulled muscles, depression, migraines, anxiety, nervousness, addiction, and sleeping disorders. This list of disorders is surely familiar to most medical marijuana patients, as MMJ works to alleviate them as well. If you’re on this path to a more holistic form of healing already, adding Reiki to your heath care regimen might prove another step toward healing the mind and body. “Reiki is brought through the practitioner and transferred to the client via a light touch,” Jackson says. “Divine Light Healing focuses on removing any negative energy block from your energy field. I assist in removing it from one’s energy field and dispose of it into the earth using combined talk therapy and energy healing.”

Prescription

for Disaster It’s not just whitney and heath by alan shackelford, m.d.

18

It now appears likely that renowned singer Whitney Houston’s recent death was the result of an interaction between one or more prescription medications and alcohol, which, as we have seen far too many times before, can be a lethal combination. In another high-profile tragedy in 2008, actor Heath Ledger died from a combination of several medications. The report by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York concluded that he died “...as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine … the manner of death is accident [sic], resulting from the abuse of prescription medications.” Although these two losses are tragic, they are but two of more than 37,000 other accidental deaths that occur each year due to prescription drugs in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In fact, the number of deaths caused by prescription drugs now exceeds those from traffic accidents, and has doubled in the past 10 years. It has been suggested that a number of different factors underlie the precipitous rise in prescription drug deaths, including aggressive marketing of prescription medications directly to consumers by pharmaceutical companies, especially on television. In fact, this kind of advertising is allowed in only two countries, the United States and New Zealand, where the number of accidental deaths due to prescription medications is also rising. Physicians’ desire to help their patients may also play a role, with doctors reaching for the prescription pad more readily than in the past. Difficulty finding out what other doctors may have prescribed for the same person may also contribute to the problem. In Heath Ledger’s case, an investigation showed that his doctors did not prescribe most of the medications involved in his death. Where he obtained them isn’t known, but the widespread perception that prescription drugs are safe may have played a role not only in his case, but also in many other drug interaction or unintentional overdose deaths.

In addition, because prescription pharmaceuticals generally target only one symptom or condition, and because many patients may have several different problems, doctors often find it necessary to prescribe several different medications. In some cases, even more medicines may be required to treat side effects caused by the original medications, further complicating the situation. And although it is incumbent upon physicians to do all they can to prevent drug interactions, in the managed-care age of the five-to-15 minute appointment, that is not always easy. Furthermore, some patients with multiple medical conditions may see several different physicians, usually sub-specialists who may not always communicate with the other doctors involved in that patient’s care. The chance that problems might occur can rise exponentially. Even individual pharmaceuticals can have serious side effects. The prescription medication Sumatriptan, used to treat migraine headaches, has been implicated in a number of heart attacks, primarily in younger women, but also in older patients, including men. Aspirin is presumed to be safe because it is sold without a prescription and has been used for many years to treat pain. And while doctors may recommend low-dose aspirin to some patients to prevent platelets from sticking together and forming blood clots, aspirin taken in higher doses can cause bleeding that can be difficult to control, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths a year. In fact, over-the-counter medications cause an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 deaths in the U.S. alone each year. None of this should be seen to imply that there is something inherently wrong with prescription or over-the-counter medications. Modern pharmaceutical science has achieved some remarkable successes—particularly in fighting infections that frequently resulted in death before the development of antibiotics—and in prolonging people’s lives, improving the quality of those additional years and in preventing diseases with vaccinations. But the problems outlined above are real and alarming. Contrast this with the effects of cannabis when used as a medical treatment option. There have been no verified deaths due to a cannabis overdose in the nearly 5,000 years of recorded human use of cannabis, whether for medical or recreational purposes. In fact, there is no

known lethal dose of cannabis in humans. This is not to say that marijuana doesn’t have side effects, some of which may be undesirable, but they are generally mild, last only a few hours, and disappear without any significant longterm effects. It should be noted in this context that some people, adolescents and children in particular, may be more susceptible to other, as yet poorly defined and understood long-term effects of high-dose or frequent cannabis use, whether recreational or medical. Therefore, as with all other treatments, it is important to monitor the effects of cannabis and to use only the amount needed to treat or control a symptom or condition. As for recreational use, other commonly consumed substances such as alcohol are known to pose far more serious potential risks, including death from alcohol poisoning, and should also be avoided or used with caution, and not just by young people. In fact, a recently published World Health Organization study found that alcohol kills more than 2.5 million people a year worldwide— more than AIDS, malaria, or tuberculosis. The study concluded that alcohol abuse is the single most important health risk factor for the middle income people who make up half the world’s population—far greater than obesity or tobacco use. Any concerns about the potential health risks of cannabis, whether used recreationally or medically, pale by comparison. Although large numbers of clinical trials of cannabis have not been conducted, there is compelling evidence that cannabis is as effective if not more effective than many pharmaceuticals in treating a number of different symptoms and conditions. And although we will never know whether Whitney Houston, Heath Ledger, or any of the other people who have died from prescription drugs and drug interactions might still be alive if they had used cannabis instead of pharmaceuticals, the mere suggestion that marijuana might be able to take the place of even some of those pharmaceuticals should spur much more medical and scientific inquiry into its potential benefits. We owe it to the memories of the more than 37,000 people whose lives are cut short each year simply by taking medicines they believe are safe.

Moon Candy Colorado Grow Corporation’s Moonrock

There’s a reason they call it Moonrock: with its cratered surface, the butane-extracted wax looks like a piece of the moon. There could be another reason as well: with a THC level of 80-percent and higher, Moonrock makes gravity feel like an earthly concern. Whatever the reason behind the name, the real intrigue here is with the product itself. Not a sticky pain like most earwax hash, Moonrock crumbles like a wafer cookie and sprinkles easily onto a vaporizer, into a joint, or onto a bowl. Smoked, it lends a smooth and easy flavor, and, of course, a strong dose of medicine. Available in strain specific varieties, Moonrock is the product of a closely guarded process that begins with a butane extraction of the highest quality sweet leaves and buds. After that comes a secret step that only a lucky few know about. Then the wax is heated and dried in a special humidor that gives the Moonrock its signature craters and eliminates 99.9-percent of the butane. This yields a truly unique wax that’s garnered a deserved cult following. Don’t just take our word for it, though. In the words of Derrin, a patient and daily user, “The medicine tastes better, lasts longer, and is very potent. Plus, it’s easy to work with—you don’t get it all over your hands.” One small step for man, one giant leap for medicine. —Lionel Green 20

Med ucation Myths, mystery, and mmj Myth: Marijuana is highly addictive. Long-term marijuana users experience physical dependence and withdrawal, and often need professional drug treatment to break their marijuana habits. Fact: Most people who smoke marijuana smoke it only occasionally. A small minority of Americans—less than 1 percent—smoke marijuana on a daily basis. An even smaller minority develop a dependence on marijuana. Some people who smoke marijuana heavily and frequently stop without difficulty. Others seek help from drug treatment professionals. Marijuana does not cause physical dependence.

Myth: Marijuana is more damaging to the lungs than tobacco. Marijuana smokers are at a high risk of developing lung cancer, bronchitis, and emphysema. Fact: Moderate smoking of marijuana appears to pose minimal danger to the lungs. Like tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke contains a number of irritants and carcinogens. But marijuana users typically smoke much less often than tobacco smokers, and over time, inhale much less smoke. As a result, the risk of serious lung damage should be lower in marijuana smokers. There have been no reports of lung cancer related solely to marijuana, and in a large study presented to the American Thoracic Society in 2006, even regular marijuana smokers were found not to have any increased risk of lung cancer. Unlike heavy tobacco smokers, heavy marijuana smokers exhibit no obstruction of the lung’s small airways. That indicates that people will not develop emphysema from smoking marijuana.

Myth: Marijuana interferes with male and female sex hormones. In both men and women, marijuana can cause infertility. Marijuana retards sexual development in adolescents. It produces feminine characteristics in males and masculine characteristics in females. Fact: There is no evidence that marijuana causes infertility in men or women. In animal studies, high doses of THC diminish the production of some sex hormones and can impair reproduction. However, most studies of humans have found that marijuana has no impact on sex hormones. In those studies showing an impact, it is modest, temporary, and of no apparent consequence for reproduction. There is no scientific evidence that marijuana delays adolescent sexual development, has feminizing effects on males, or masculinizing effects on females. Seed to

Salvation

a close look at hemp’s potential Industrial hemp is one of the oldest agricultural crops on this planet. It requires little space, little water, virtually no pesticides, thrives almost everywhere, and has the potential to produce countless green products from food to fuel. Farming it in the U.S. would reduce our carbon footprint. If it were legal to grow it, that is. Supporters of legalizing hemp believe this plant just might be our economical and ecological salvation, a way to finally negate the effects of climate change. Aside from the overwhelming possibilities as an agricultural crop, could it truly be the solution to our environmental problems? For any crop to have an impact on ecological degradation, it would have to do one or more of the following: remove or reduce CO2 emissions and fossil fuel consumption, prevent ecosystem destruction, be cost effective, offer incentive for global implementation, and/or require change to existing environmentally damaging practices. Hemp can do that. Hemp can do all of those things, while whistling Dixie with one eye closed. Industrial hemp yields three to eight tons of fiber per acre, four times the average acre of forest, and two to three times the average acre of cotton. This increased yield means that it can pull two to four times as much CO2 from the environment in the same growing space. It also means four times as much potential product—paper, for example. Hemp paper is stronger, more durable, and cheaper to process than paper pulped from wood. Utilizing hemp in this way mean less logging, slowing deforestation. Hemp is also the number one biomass (organic material that can be converted into energy) producer on this planet: 10 tons per acre, or, converted, 1,000 gallons of methanol. One acre of industrial hemp is worth over $700, considerably more than that of wheat or corn. Moreover, its lighter weight would reduce cost of transport and increase load capacity. Worldwide, tracts of land remain useless due to 22

Industrial hemp yields three to eight tons of fiber per acre, four times the average acre of forest, and two to three times the average acre of cotton. excess amounts of toxins left behind after nuclear waste or other heavy metals. Phytomediation (the use of green plants to clean soil) has been employed in such areas with great success. Used in this way, hemp absorbs toxins; according to published sources, it is “able to extract heavy metals from the soil in amounts higher than many other agricultural crops.” Eventually, the soil becomes useable once more. As an industrial crop, hemp requires very limited pesticides, as it is naturally resistant to pests and weeds. After harvest, the harvest area would be virtually free of both and richer in nitrogen to boot. Planted in rotation, hemp actually increases

the yield potential of the next crop planted. Evidently, then, hemp is able to adhere to all of the proposed requirements for reducing impact on climate. While doing all of that faster, cheaper, and more efficiently than anything else, hemp also provides an array of sustainable materials for clothing, paper, building, and insulation. Is it a super plant? Is it leading us to energy and environmental salvation? Both, it would seem. Hempsolutely. —Liz Mund Source: Ranalli P., 1999. The companies are located in the U.K., and are currently expanding operations into Canada (where it is legal to grow hemp).

Processing hemp requires no water, a plus in the green department, but has the drawback of producing lots and lots of dust. To combat this problem, ALT is capturing their dust and compressing it into fuel pellets that are sold to local electrical power generators. To boot, they are working on their own generator that will use the pellets to run the plant. Hempcrete is a highly sustainable construction material made from hemp and a natural limebased binder. On top of being comparable, or in many cases superior, to traditional materials, the unique structure of hemp fiber regulates moisture, controls temperature swings, and while doing all that, locks away CO2 from the air in your home’s walls. Like plants do. And get this: Hempcrete breathes. The benefits don’t stop there. No termites. No bed bugs. No black mold. Best of all, when a Hempcrete house is demolished, the material will just melt back into the soil, gently fertilizing it.

In that vein, Hemp Technologies {hemptechnologies.com}, a sustainable building company out of Ashville, N.C., has built three houses with Hempcrete. Combined, the houses have absorbed 18 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere since their construction. David Madera, co-founder of Hemp Technologies, told me that last winter in Ashville, when temperatures hovered around 17 degrees, the average monthly heating cost was about 11 cents per square-foot. The Hempcrete homes hovered right around 2 cents, with similar ratios in the summer for cooling costs. Madera extended an invitation for me to visit Ashville and stay with him in his home. And when I am ready to level my brick bungalow, he offered to travel to Colorado and build me a Hempcrete cottage. So you see: there are still good people working hard for the betterment of our future. Hemp is one way to get there. —Liz Mund

You may have heard of Lakota Sage—or at least seen his awe-inspiring twists and turns on the slopes at Echo Mountain. An established, professional snowboarder sponsored by the likes of Verizon and 720 Boardshop, Sage travels constantly for competitions and works tirelessly to stay in shape for events and races. Recently, however, he tore his ACL—a devastating knee injury that laid him up on the sidelines and kept him off the slopes. We sat down with him to talk about his experience using MMJ to ease the recovery, and what it meant for someone so used to being active. “Over the summer, I was training for nationals and tore my ACL, so I had to undergo surgery. This was at the beginning of November 2011. Once the surgery was complete, the doctors gave me a bunch of prescription medication—Vicadin, Oxycontin, things like that. I had never taken any of them before. I had a very bad experience the first time I took Oxycontin—I was up all night.

Thankfully, my friend, Rhett, owns the Native Roots dispensaries in Lakewood and Denver and he got me on as one of their patients. We got all this figured out within two days of the surgery. They sent me edibles and strains that enabled me to cut my pill intake—prescribed as six pills a day—down to two pills. I understand how much medication can mess with your system. I want to be healthy, and not have my body wrecked by the side effects of prescription pills. Medical marijuana doesn’t do any of that. It keeps my mind off the pain, and helps me get through the day with no side effects. It also helps me sleep and maintain an appetite. It’s been three months since the surgery. I haven’t been using the marijuana as much lately because my injury is healing nicely. I have two months until I can start snowboarding again, but I’m definitely feeling better. Actually, I’ve been so impressed with the effect of the medical marijuana, that Rhett and I came up with an idea. We’ve started designing a sports campaign for extreme athletes—reaching out to those with painful injuries to get them on a program with Native Roots. We just started talking about this recently, so we’ve only done one ad in Westword, but it’s getting going. Check out Native Roots’ website, {nativeroots303.com}, for more information.”

High Art Hemp-influenced expression The creative possibilities opened up by the flowers of the cannabis plant are storied and many, but sister plant hemp is also a reservoir of potential for unbridled creation. For, with hemp, if you can dream it, you can make it. With that in mind, we present three very different artists working in very different ways with cannabis and hemp. Made from roach papers of smoked joints, mosaics by Cliff Maynard {chronic-art.com} have the double allure of looking eerily like their subject matter (portraits of famous rebel thinkers, mostly) and giving off the aura of smoldering creation. The Pittsburghbased tattoo artist has certainly found a niche that fits and we can’t wait to see who he immortalizes next.

For Zoè Gruni {zoegruni.net}, hemp is the fabric that has shaped the course of her initial work. These works from her “Headgear” and “Bodygear” series are presented as sculptures for wearing and living in: “hybrid figures mixing the human and animal bodies, almost as though they were primordial presences capable of acquiring a history of their own and of becoming personalities over time.”

Achilleas Giannissis of Serendipitee {serendipitee.eu} prints his designs on fairtrade, sweatshop-free tee shirts made in solarand/or wind-powered factries from a blend of organic cotton, bamboo, and hemp. All the designs are hand-drawn on Moleskine pages and printed using eco-friendly water-based paints in limited editions of 111.

CannaScience know your dose part two

As we mentioned in our inaugural issue, knowing your dose is perhaps the key factor in using medical marijuana. This is especially true with edibles, as the effects can last much longer than they do with smoking or vaporizing and manifest differently in all users. There are two components to honing your edible intake. The first is making certain that any edible you buy is tested. There’s simply no way an edible company can know what they are putting into their edible without testing it first. For instance, an untested product claiming, say, 80mg of THC might only be delivering 40mg of activated THC, meaning its medicinal effects will have less of an impact than what the label would indicate. The big name in town as far as testing goes is CannLabs {cannlabs.com}, which offers testing on all MMJ products. This type of testing isn’t required by law, but more and more products are being tested as customer demand for the information is increasing. This has prompted

28

other labs, like Herbal Synergy and RM3, to enter the market. Beyond just determining the active THC levels, the testing process reveals a vast amount of information about the cannabinoid content of the product, which brings us to the second component to consider with your edible intake—and medical marijuana in general— CBD content. The more CBDs something has, the less effect you feel from the THC and the more direct pain relief the product offers. Now, the big name in town as far as high CBD content goes is Mountain High Suckers {mountainhighsuckers.com}, which produces a line of hard candies on a stick with extraordinarily high levels of CBD. The suckers are tested by CannLabs by the batch and then a single sucker from each batch is tested again to ensure the proper dosage, including CBD levels. According to Owner John Garrison, his company

stumbled on some plants that produced high levels of CBDs and never looked back. “It’s less of a high,” he says of his marijuana’s effects. “The CBD is a strong painkiller. It’s also an antiinflammatory agent and kills cancer cells. In my opinion, the CBDs mellow out the THC, removing the anxiety and paranoia. You can function very well, because it takes away the stoney feeling.” Garrison says that Mountain High Suckers’ patients are typically serious people with serious illnesses, adding that a lot of cancer patients believe that they can be cured or helped significantly by a product with high CBDs. He’s also seen people use the products to get off narcotics and treat alcoholism. So you see, when it comes to proper MMJ dosing, there’s much more than meets the eye. For more on the vast and expanding word of CBDs, hurry over to projectcbd.org. —Lionel Green

A Patient

Parent

medicating responsibly starts and ends at home It’s no secret that medical marijuana has a wide array of applications and, therefore, a broad and varied patient base—including many parents. Being a parent who medicates comes with at least two specific obstacles: safeguarding your children from your medicine and explaining marijuana to your children. According to Julie Dooley, an MMJ patient and owner of Julie & Kate Baked Goods {julieandkate.com}, the same precautions that you’d take with any prescription medication apply: namely, keeping medicine safely stored and out-of-reach. With the increased availability of edibles—and with a fair number of them in the form of things that kids enjoy, like baked treats and lollipops—an extra bit of caution is required. “All products, especially edibles, should be kept in clearly labeled packages,” Dooley insists, and, indeed, her company’s line of granola and seeds come stickered with warnings and a bounty of information on the levels and strains of THC

each contains. “A young child may only need to know that, on occasion, some medications may look like a candy, but are actually a very potent medicine and they should always ask before they consume anything.” With older children there comes the process of explaining the particulars of marijuana while also refuting the propaganda that continues to surround it. “An older child can begin to learn about the cannabis plant—what it looks like and smells like—and rules should begin to be set in place,” Dooley continues. “A teenager on the other hand, is quite capable of learning all the benefits that cannabis may offer the parent, while, at the same time, understanding why it is inappropriate for their own recreational use. Legal ramifications should also be discussed.” Another consideration every parent must make is how to medicate responsibly as a parent. That means finding an appropriate dose and delivery method that provides relief but also allows you to

be present and make good decisions. This can be especially difficult with edible products, as many aren’t labeled with sufficient information. Julie & Kate products stand out as extremely good citizens in this regard, as information about the active THC levels they contain is very clear. The most important aspect to knowing your dose, however, is knowing your body and how THC works in your body. With any edible product, a patient should begin with a small dose, between 5-15mg of active THC, and increase the dosage from there only if desired effects are not achieved within the span of about 90 minutes. “Once a patient is comfortable with their dose, it is easy to plan out their days or evenings,” Dooley says. As any parent knows, planning ahead is always a good idea. —Lionel Green

Delicious treats from nativas naturals Black Bean-Hemp Superfood Patties makes six patties

Ingredients • coconut oil, for cooking • 1 c finely diced sweet yellow onion (about 1/2 medium onion) • 4 large cloves garlic, minced • 1 c finely diced red bell pepper (about 1 pepper) • 1-1/2 c cooked black beans, unsalted • 1 c hemp seeds • 10 sundried tomatoes, soaked in hot water until soft, finely minced • 1/2 tsp sea salt • 2 tsp paprika powder • 1/4 tsp chipotle powder • 1/4 tsp cayenne powder • 2 tsp miso paste • 1 c cooked brown rice • 1/3 c quinoa flakes

Method Heat 1 teaspoon coconut oil in a nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until onion begins to turn translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the bell pepper, and continue to cook until vegetables have softened, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and add the black beans, hemp seeds, sundried tomatoes, sea salt, paprika, chipotle, and cayenne. Cook, stirring constantly, for an additional 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl. Add the miso paste into the mixture. Use the back of a fork to mix the beans and miso together, partially mashing the beans. Mix in the cooked brown rice and quinoa flakes. When cool enough to handle, use clean hands to knead the mixture together to form a dense base. Place in the refrigerator, covered, for 30 minutes to allow quinoa flakes to swell and absorb the excess moisture. Pack the mixture together to form 6-8 patties. Warm a small amount of coconut oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. When the pan is hot, add the patties. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned. Pair with spouted grain hamburger buns, avocado, tomatoes, onions, and sprouts. Or, try it tucked inside a collard leaf wrap or on top of a salad.

Kind

By Nature

kind meds feels your pain For anyone caught in the sandtrap of traditional prescription medication, the high prices and pile-up of bottles can be dizzying and frustrating. After all, there are the meds that you take to alleviate whatever ails you and then there are the meds you take to counteract the nasty side effects of your primary meds—and all of them are far from free. Tired of this downward spiral, Tye, co-owner of Kind Meds {936 South Federal Boulevard; 303.993.4451} in Denver began using medical marijuana years ago to help her cope with a variety of ailments including asthma, chronic bronchitis, stomach issues, a torn muscle in her back, and a shortened hip. “I used to have a closet full of prescription drugs,” she says. Medical marijuana took the place of all of them but once she became a patient, she still felt like she was paying too much for her meds. “I was spending about $2,000 a month on meds and I thought, I bet I can do this myself.” So Tye and her partner set up shop, determined to offer their patients top-quality medicine at truly reasonable prices. “We were smoking a lot of stuff that had lots of chemicals and I have athsma, so we decided to grow organic,” she says. “But most of all, I wanted everything to be affordable.” Her dispensary has thrived thanks to their dedication and a hands-on approach with patients that finds Tye connecting on multiple levels, first as a fellow patient. “I was an insurance broker before, and also have experience dealing with prescription drugs in that respect. I’m also comfortable dealing with an older crowd.” As her business continues to grow, Tye looks forward to opening a kitchen later this year, hoping to fill a void she sees in the edibles market. “I want to offer something small with a higher dosage that’s less expensive, consistent, and tastes right. I’d also like to offer something with higher CBDs for better pain relief.” What won’t change is the nature of her business. It’s a family-run enterprise—making the “kind” in Kind Meds something heartfelt indeed.

He’s Got the Cure For jimmy smith of mr. nice guys and phat daddyz, only the best will do

32

You don’t have to sit very long with Jimmy Smith before he lets you know that it takes more than some plants and expensive equipment to grow high-quality medical marijuana. “Growing marijuana is an art,” he says. As the owner of Mr. Nice Guys dispensary on South Dahlia and Phat Daddyz, the edibles company that gave Colorado Coo Coo Ca Chews and Super Baked Pops, he should know. “Just having a green thumb and the money to invest in starting a dispensary isn’t enough. You have to be passionate about it.” Smith’s passion for medical marijuana was seeded years ago, as he sought treatment options for his mother, who suffers from fibromyalgia, Crohn’s disease, and IBS. Smith’s godfather was battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and there were other family members with ailments he was able to grow an answer for as well. Smith was one of the first dispensary owners in the state, setting up shop first in Lakewood, where he says he was zoned out for being unincorporated. His second space was shut down for being within 1,000 feet of another dispensary, though the facility serves as his grow location. With his spot on south Dahlia, however, he’s finally been able to grow his business in new directions.

Super Baked Pops

“My dispensary is unique because the kitchen where I make my edibles is connected,” he says. “I’m thinking about trying to do fresh-baked edibles. Someone could come in and order a pizza in the dispensary. The order would then need to be manifested through the edible company and then technically my dispensary would buy it wholesale back from the edible company, but I would be able to do it. People could come buy infused sesame chicken, whatever.” For now, however, Smith is making his mark with creative edibles. His popular Coo Coo Ca Chews—a chewy swirl of chocolate and cherry—weigh in at 150mg, and the Super Baked Pops pack 100mg of power in an attractive (and tasty) hand-dipped cake pop. Phat Daddyz also offers a 75mg Blue Ball, 100mg Tipsy Stix (comparable to the Pixie Stix everyone remembers from youth), and some extremely potent CannaButter with 2,000mg of active THC in every cup.

hempconmag.com

33

“All of my stuff is tested through CannLabs,” Smith says. “I know exactly how many grams I need to put into a batch to make it right. I want to test, because I want everything to be accurate. I’m trying to create the strongest products I can at the lowest price point.” A big part of getting the most out of his product involves proper curing, something that many patients—and, sadly, a few growers—might not realize is as crucial to developing a bud’s full potency. Many rely on the technique of burping, which, in Smith’s case, involves putting his dried plants into giant Rubbermaid bins and periodically opening and closing the lid. It’s an effective method, but in an effort to further refine his product, Mr. Nice Guys will will soon be home to a walk-in humidor. Smith will be able to fine-tune the temperature and humidity levels electronically and monitor the

“We grow 100-percent of our product. We don’t outsource anything.” —Jimmy Smith progress of the curing process. On any given day, the bins that are at their optimal potency will be open to customers. “We grow 100-percent of our product,” Smith notes. And in another effort to make sure he’s getting the most out of that product, he and a colleague have engineered a butane extraction machine that’s poised to be an industry game-changer. “It’s one of the highest yield machines out there,” Smith says. “We can process about two pounds of trim in just over an hour.” The potent hash oil that the machine whips up then goes into earwax and most of Phat Daddyz’s edibles. Similar machines generally cost upwards of $100,000 and aren’t able to convert the raw materials into oil nearly as quickly. The machine Smith helped design sells for $15,000, and one has already found a happy home at a local edibles company. So with this three-pronged approach to making the most of everything he touches, Jimmy Smith is living proof that growing medical marijuana is indeed an art form. 34

The Road Ahead MMJ looks to a promising future, bolstered by powerful advocates

The medical marijuana industry has blossomed in Colorado over the last five years or so. Despite persistent challenges, it has grown as a respected medical treatment and advocates are stepping forward all across the state. We sat down with 12 of those who are paving the way to a bright MMJ future— politically, medicinally, scientifically, and socially. Here’s what they had to say.

36

Tanya Garduno

Vincent Palazzotto

President, Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council (CSMCC); Owner, Amendment 20 MMC

Medical Marijuana Assistance Program of America (MMAPA); Host, The Marijuana Report; VP, Mobile Doctors of America

What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? I have always been an advocate of cannabis in medicine, but decided I needed to do something to protect patient rights when I became my sister’s caregiver. I attended a city council meeting around the same time I started figuring out her medicine and was shocked at what I saw. There were tons of people there screaming out about constitutional rights and dressed inappropriately. They were really alienating the people they were trying to persuade. You could just see everyone on the council shut down to any hint of reason. I gathered as many phone numbers as possible and began hosting meetings at the library to discuss how this group could work <i>with<i> the city and other opponents to get the industry a fair shot at servicing patients. The group became the first members of the Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council and we have been moving forward fighting for safe patient access and a fair shake for our industry ever since. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? Read history. Look at the reasons cannabis was truly attacked and outlawed. Look at the results that were supposed to be achieved and analyze what has actually happened. When you look at the whole story and really think about the lack of success regarding our current war on drugs, legalizing cannabis should be a no-brainer. Look at the real studies and the real people behind cannabis, its effects, its true medical benefits, and the options that can make our country healthier and safer than it has been since cannabis prohibition began. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? We were able to work with the Colorado Springs City Council and have been able to educate several county and city officials about the reality of the industry. We have had city staff and elected officials tour facilities and we’ve given lectures to community organizations that changed their opinions of the industry. We also successfully fought off a ban on marijuana in El Paso County. It all seems like we’ve been walking a mile while carrying an 80,000-pound stone—and we’re not done yet.

What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? Patients. Early on, I personally experienced patients’ rights getting lost in the shuffle, and patients being handed the short end of the stick. This continues to be both an interesting and challenging industry to be a part of, in that it allows me to impact peoples lives while building upon personal interests in leadership, advocacy, and political change. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? I would begin by reading any one of the hundreds of letters we’ve received from patients describing the increased level of relief that cannabis has provided them. I would question why research has been hampered, and so little is known as to how cannabis affects symptoms related to multiple sclerosis, AIDS, cancer, and PTSD. I would question the rationale in reducing a military veteran’s medical benefits or denying a life-saving organ transplant to a person who chooses to use cannabis to treat their symptoms. In closing, I would encourage members of Congress to open their hearts by displaying compassion for patients who have made a personal choice to embrace alternative ways of nurturing their health. How do you think cannabis will be treated 10 years from now? I have difficulty understanding how informed citizens can continue to believe decadesold propaganda about the personal use of marijuana. The war on drugs has failed. By 2022, I would expect a model that supports the fullout legalization and regulation of cannabis to have been adopted across the United States.

Genifer Murray Founder/CEO, CannLabs, Inc., a medical cannabis testing laboratory

What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? Science! I have always had a love for science, but my career has always been in sales and marketing. Now I have this wonderful opportunity to work with both.! However, now that I have been in the industry,

the focus and passion is all about the patients and helping them get safe and effective medicine. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? It’s all about educating. I would do my best to provide them with as much information as they need to really understand what this plant is all about, and how we haven’t even scratched the surface of its effectiveness. I would also introduce them to the many patients I have met who will testify that cannabis has saved their lives. It is the patients who are the key to getting the word out. How do you think cannabis will be treated 10 years from now? I don’t even want to guess. I just hope that our country takes the time to get educated and realize that we have so many more problems that need attention. MMJ is definitely not one of them.

Kelly Moore Owner, Flower of Life MMC (Boulder); Owner, Flower of Life Infused MIP (Boulder); Executive Director, The Natural Medicine Initiative For Cancer What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? I believe that the suffering in our world is a result of our disconnect from Nature. Having a background in the healing arts and plant medicine, it was clear to me this plant was stepping up to the front lines of our reunion. She has so much to teach us. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? We need to continue to educate Congress and voters about the value this plant has. We are talking about a plant—a plant that has next to zero toxicity. You can overdose on water more easily than on cannabis. This plant has such far-reaching potential, not only as a medicinal resource, but as fiber, fuel, food, and filter. It seems completely insane that this plant should not be legalized. Besides, it’s obvious that prohibition has failed. Americans who want cannabis find a way to get it anyway. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? We’ve had so many. The developments we have made—and are making—in our infused products lab are astonishing. Through the use of

hempconmag.com

37

our infused products we’ve seen great progress in helping patients with a range of conditions. We’ve seen patients break addictions to pharmaceuticals and watched as their lives were fully restored. We’ve seen full remission of Crohn’s disease, and greater comfort and mobility for lupus and MS patients. Most recently, a patient tested free of her basil cell carcinoma after testing our new high potency salve.

Chuck Blackstone Owner, Verde MMC (Denver); Originator, Lemon Skunk cannabis strain What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? Let’s just say I have been intrigued by cannabis for a long time. Despite the negative propaganda surrounding cannabis, I always knew that it was a very positive substance. In 2006, my father was diagnosed with ALS—a terminal disease and one of the hardest things to watch someone suffer from. The one thing that helped him was cannabis. Out of all the prescription drugs on the market, cannabis was by far the most helpful. The doctors went through countless amounts of prescription pharmaceuticals, trying to find one that could alleviate the pain. Ultimately, it was cannabis that brought my father more relief than any other medication. When you hear a person who is suffering from a terminal illness tell you cannabis helps more than any pharmaceuticals, your realize you can’t argue with its potency. I have heard too many stories where cannabis has helped people with a variety of illnesses, depression— even stress relief. Like I tell everyone: we grow it, we pick it, and we dry it, so it’s as natural as you can get. I believe in natural forms of medicine. Who wants to be pumped up with synthetic garbage? To be able to offer this to people and see such a positive effect is priceless. Money can never buy that feeling. This is what motivates me to keep fighting the battle—knowing the patients are being helped and believing in something that’s truly beneficial. For those that don’t know the truth, we are always excited to educate them about the positive aspects of cannabis. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? I would start by focusing on the core truths about cannabis. What a wonderful thing we have

38

ThC THe Hemp Connoiseur

in front of us, and it gets bashed by negative propaganda all the time. We have all worked so hard to build a positive industry—one poised to help sick people find alternative medication. We have built a regulated system in the state of Colorado that could be the model for the world. How can government come in and tell someone what is helping with their illness and what is not? To me, we are doing nothing more than bringing an industry to the next state that would be willing to adopt the Colorado model. Think of the economic boost we have created for an economy that is in a recession! I believe in making positive contributions to society and those are our intentions in Colorado. Let us grow and keep helping people. At the end of the day, that is what this is all about. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? Keeping the doors open for patients. Business owners have invested themselves in this industry financially, emotionally, and with every other aspect of themselves to stand for what they believe in. It’s important to let the public know that the banks did not loan money to get these ventures going. We have all put ourselves out there for something we truly believe in and support. To think of all the financial investments people have put into the industry and lost due to zoning issues, constant regulation modifications, or banishments is astounding. Those are just a few examples of the bureaucratic mess. So, I would have to say that to have made it this far has been very exciting and fulfilling.

Julie Dooley Owner, Julie and Kate Baked Goods What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? The edible cannabis marketplace was filled with the proverbial pot brownie in the beginning. As a patient with Celiac’s Disease, I saw a need for edibles that could accommodate individuals with their specific dietary needs. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? Improving labeling standards for all edibles was one of my missions when joining the industry. Today, each label provides lab tested results, clearly stating THC in milligrams, which is powerful knowledge for the patients.

How do you think cannabis will be treated 10 years from now? Marijuana will be legally dispensed to anyone over the age of 21. The industry will be providing income through taxation rather than a huge expense for the tax payers through enforcement.

Warren Edson Attorney for Criminal Defense and Medical Marijuana Legal Consultation for the law offices of Edson, Maytin & Matz LLP What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? I have always been a cannabis activist. In the mid ‘90s, I represented a Vietnam veteran who actually had a prescription (yes, written on a prescription pad) for medical marijuana from the VA hospital. Unfortunately, he was arrested growing marijuana. His conviction and fortitude throughout his legal battles, however, was inspiring. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? If I had the ability to speak with the U.S. Congress or Senate, I would stress the economic impact medical marijuana has had in Colorado with little to no added budgetary costs. I would be emphasizing the tax revenue, licensing revenue, and the seeming reduction in crime in areas where the industry is present. I would further point out that the current system allows Colorado medical marijuana patients to receive some of the world’s finest medical marijuana and medical marijuana products at some of the world’s lowest prices. How do you think cannabis will be treated 10 years from now? I look forward to the day when our son laughs at the time when cannabis was illegal.

Georgia Edson On-Air Personality, iCannabisRadio; Marketing Director, MMD of Colorado; Founder, Run on Grass What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? For me, like most people, it was very personal. I heard people making jokes about “stoners”

and “pot heads” where I worked. When someone mentioned medical marijuana, it was typically done with a wink wink, and some joke about getting the munchies. It took me a while to garner the courage to speak up and voice my displeasure at this discriminatory behavior. I found that when I corrected people’s misinformation, they immediately said they were just kidding. Of course they knew that cannabis isn’t harmful—that, in fact, it is beneficial. I felt from that point on that it was important to speak openly and make it safe for others to do the same. Once you start on this path, you keep moving forward because you know that with each person you influence, a patient benefits. What can be more motivating than that?

who believes in personal freedoms. This point of view resonated with people. I became the soccer mom who supported drug reform. And you know what? That is exactly what I am. I am the neighborhood mom who wants our society to do the right thing—to allow patients safe access to their medicine and stop criminalizing adult cannabis users. Once I got over feeling that my voice couldn’t make a difference, I never stopped talking!

Kristi Kelly COO and CMO, Good Meds Network; Board Member and Co-Chair, Legislature and Marketing Committees for ACT4;Board Member and Treasurer, Cannabis Business Alliance; Coordinator, One Love, a fundraising campaign for Jason Beinor’s Legal Defense Fund

What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? I would suggest that we take a step back and remove ourselves from years of misinformation. Cannabis has proven health benefits, but it has been wrapped in propaganda for so long that we need to start by separating truth from fiction. We rely on our lawmakers to be our voice, and we need to ensure that elected officials are only speaking factually. I could easily say that the quickest way to legalization would be to hit Congress in the pocketbook with untapped tax revenue. However, I would like to take the humanistic approach. A significant percentage of the population is vilified for using a non-harmful herb. Patients who rely on cannabis are suffering because of an outdated drug law. We can’t have another generation grow up believing that cannabis is a dangerous drug, and thus confused that their parents use it. We know that our drug laws are entirely unfitting of the crime. When the “offending” substance is cannabis, we have made criminals out of patients and changed the lives of productive citizens forever because of the propagation of untruths. Therefore, I would demand that Congress only look at facts, not at opinions, when determining appropriate drug law. When you look at the facts about cannabis, it is impossible to believe that this plant should be illegal for any responsible adult.

What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? Like a lot of people in the MMJ industry, I am cautious about the impact of statewide legalization without significant federal changes first being in place. The pragmatic argument to Congress is an economic one, in terms of the long-term benefits of cannabis and hemp for this country’s growth in numerous sectors (industry, construction, agriculture, etc.), as well as the revenue generated that can be used to support important education and social programs. But for me, the real issue is the human aspect. Does anyone have the right to prohibit use of a plant that has such clear and life-changing effects on the human population? Does anyone have the right to prevent someone struggling with glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, or cancer from having access to something that can mitigate and reverse symptoms, allowing them to live productive lives without prescription drug dependence? It’s safe, natural, and you can’t overdose. I would think that would make the EPA and FDA’s jobs a little easier.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? For many years, I felt that I didn’t have much to offer the medical marijuana industry. While I always saw myself as a quiet supporter, I didn’t think anyone would care to listen to my point of view. The first time I spoke publicly about my support of cannabis legalization, I spoke as a woman, a mother, and someone

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? It wasn’t my fight, but the fact that we as an industry are here, operating, is an accomplishment. I believe we are at the beginning of a long process—our fight has only begun. From the impact of the Jason Beinor case (highlighting drug test violations that prevented Beinor from receiving unemployment) on the entire industry

to the U.S. Attorney letters and the threat of federal intervention, to banking issues, fear and uncertainty in the medical community, and the basic knowledge that cannabis, even for medical use, is still stigmatized, tells me we still have a lot of work to do. How do you think cannabis will be treated 10 years from now? When we look back in 10 years, I hope later generations will scratch their heads, wondering what took us so long. In other words, cannabis used to be readily available for medical use, and its illegality is purely the result of a successful alcohol lobby protecting market share. Good marketing and propaganda did the rest in terms of solidifying its demonized status in the American consciousness. I hope people acknowledge the past and move forward using common sense, facts, and science.

Dr. Allen Shackelford Harvard Medical Schooltrained in internal medicine, nutritional medicine, and behavioral medicine; Expert in the treatment of insomnia, nicotine addiction, obesity, and performance problems; Founder and Medical Director, Amarimed of Colorado; Founder and Medical Director, Harvard Park Health What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? Having another effective treatment option for medical conditions that had proven to be difficult to treat with conventional pharmaceuticals was my initial motivation. As I delved more deeply into the medical and scientific literature on cannabis and its effects, I became fascinated by the many suggestions in the research that cannabis could potentially also be an effective treatment for many other conditions that now defy treatment. I am currently pursuing options for studying those potential benefits in much more depth. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? Experience and medical research have shown that cannabis is a safe and effective treatment for a number of different medical conditions. Indeed, DEA Administrative Judge Francis Young said in his 1988 ruling that cannabis “...is one of the safest therapeutically active

hempconmag.com

39

substance known to man.” A 2004 AARP poll of its members indicated that 72-percent thought adults should be legally allowed to use it if a physician recommends it, and 55-percent would obtain it for a loved one who needed it. It is clear that a majority of the American people support the use of medical cannabis. It is also clear that cannabis has remarkable medical benefits. Congress should recognize those facts and act to change the status of both medical and industrial cannabis in the United States. To fail to do so would be a further indication that Congress is irretrievably beholden to narrow pharmaceutical interests rather than those of the people. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? Delving into and finding the medical literature on cannabis that documents the biochemistry and pharmacology of the cannabinoids was and remains a prodigious task, largely because that information is often hidden away in obscure medical journals. It has taken literally hundreds of hours to read through papers and find information that is relevant to the use of cannabis as a treatment option. Despite all the work and intermittent frustration, it has been a tremendous journey of discovery that I hope will ultimately result in help for the thousands— indeed millions—of patients.

Matt Berger Owner, Cannasseur MMC; Originator, Bubba Kush cannabis strain What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? They only care about money from lobbyists, so the first step would be to convince them there is more money in the medical marijuana business. The real answer would be to get people off synthetic heroin and other harmful drugs. This would produce a more productive society that is not sitting on their couches drooling on themselves. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? Everyday is another hurdle. The government is always throwing something at us that sets us back. This week I have to move my store. Who knows what they are going make me do next. I think that is the hardest thing—we never know what’s next.

How do you think cannabis will be treated 10 years from now? I think it will be treated like it was before all the propaganda—a medicinal herb that you can get at any pharmacy. I think people are starting to figure out the government, not to mention the lobbyists that created the propaganda, are selling them a bad bunch of goods.

Jason Lauve Advocate and Editor-inChief, Cannabis Health News magazine; Author, State House Bill 12-1099: Phytoremediation Hemp Pilot Program; Board Member, Association of Cannabis Trades for Colorado; Board Member, Colorado affiliate of Patients Out of Time What was the main reason you became involved in the medical cannabis industry? Liberty and death—not only mine, but everyone’s. Four years after a ski accident, my life was becoming normal, but the day my home was raided by the Boulder Drug Task Force everything changed. This resulted from a tip by a friend who lived down the street from me in Louisville. For the next 14 months, life flipped upside down and turned inside out for me. Little did I know that this was just the beginning. My trial addressed a few things: using amounts of cannabis well above the two-ounce guideline in Article 18 of the Colorado Constitution (I was in possession of over eight ounces), the affirmative defense of a recommendation, and the possession of concentrates such as kief and hash. After four grueling days in court, I won my case. On August 6, 2009, I had almost all of my 34 ounces returned to me from law enforcement (I believe they kept a quarter for themselves). Most people would probably thank their lucky stars and head home. I, however, had learned something important that I had to share with people around me through the publishing of Cannabis Health News Magazine. The magazine is an opportunity for advocacy, political work, and my continuing support of the cannabis movement. Additionally, my personal experience using cannabis to control muscle spasms, chronic pain, and other ailments helped me realize that I didn’t need prescriptions from my doctor. It also left me with even more questions—how many people benefit from cannabis, and how many could benefit by having the choice to use cannabis as a health care option? I believe that

cannabis can not only help people improve their quality of life, but prolong it. What testimony would you give to convince Congress to legalize cannabis nationwide? This is exactly what I would say: The United States of America, as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services, has a patent on the medical application of cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants from 2003 that states cannabis has a considerable medical value for the prevention and treatment of many diseases including cancer, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, tumors, and other neurologically related ailments, as well as Ischemia. There are potential uses for brain injuries, strokes, and possibly neural growth and regeneration, diabetes, autism, and other ailments. This evidence puts the DEA and Federal Scheduling of Cannabis in direct conflict with U.S. Patent 6,630,507. I would ask you to please take into account the overwhelming scientific evidence that demonstrates that cannabis does have a medical value. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome within the medical marijuana industry? Reaching across the aisle and engaging in conversation with people who are, at first, against cannabis or believe the stereotypes of a marijuana user. When I talk with people about cannabis, the conversation is not about the plethora of things that hemp and cannabis does, but about that person’s quality of life and how cannabis (and/or hemp) may fit into a person’s daily lifestyle. Many of us in the cannabis movement are aware of the versatile nature of hemp and cannabis, but many people around us do not. We get so excited about sharing what we know, but sharing too much information can be overwhelming. When I meet new people and get to know a little about them, I like to share a story that they can relate to which brings cannabis into the conversation. For instance, I often sit with a group of military wives who knit together at the coffee shop once a week. Early on, I noticed that a few of the women were having trouble using their hands and I asked what was wrong. Just as expected, they revealed that they were suffering from arthritis—a perfect opportunity to discuss the benefits of cannabis. Clearly, then, the opportunities to discuss it is all around us, and the discussions are most impactful when we use compassion to empower others.

"Here at Colorado Grow Corporation, we don't make the bud you smoke, we make the bud you smoke better... Our focus the past two years we've been in business was not to make a large variety of products, but instead to create the highest-quality concentrates in the industry," Carmen says, one of the founders of the company. It's the classic quality-over-quantity argument, and the Colorado Grow Corporation truly delivers on that promise. Just sprinkle a little of their strain-specific Moonrock wax over your favorite bud and you will reach MMJ nirvana without having to smoke an entire bowl. For those who need serious medication, this is the way to go to get the most out of your medicine without having to medicate as much or as often to get the desired effect. "It is very important to be able to provide strain specific wax to the patient. This allows them to pick the exact right medication for their ailment. Most wax you find on the market is a hodgepodge of many different strains. The problem with this is the patient doesn't know from one purchase to the next how they will be affected and, more importantly, how their ailment will be relieved," Carmen explains. Next time you're in your favorite dispensary, make sure to ask if they carry CGC's strain-specific wax. If they carry it, you will not be disappointed.

Even through the use of medical marijuana, I still feel pain until I started using the hash made by Colorado Grow Corporation. I can now function in my everyday activities without the pain."

Randy MMJ patient "I am a surviving cancer patient who just finished my chemotherapy. One of the guys on my softball team mentioned I should try medical marijuana to help with my nausea. At that time I was willing to try anything. At first, it seemed to work, but quickly wore off and I was miserable again. Then I was introduced to the hash made by Colorado Grow Corporation and I was amazed by the effects. My nausea was quickly eliminated for a much longer time. Thanks CGC!"

ALTITUDE WELLNESS CENTER

Denver :: South Denver

www.altitudewellnesscenter.com

Altitude Wellness Center is one of Denver’s best kept secrets. They have been in business since September 2009. In the beginning, most of their patients came from friends' referrals. Since the staff always keep quality meds on hand, their referral business keeps growing. Altitude will continue to grow all your favorite strains, keeping the shelves stocked with superior meds at inexpensive prices! The warehouse personnel are well-qualified experts in growing the highest quality marijuana on the market. Altitude chose its location near Hampden and Yosemite because the staff wanted to be close to the Denver Tech Center, Inverness Business Park, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Parker, and Castle Rock. They wanted to be accessible to those patients not wanting to drive into the heart of downtown Denver. The second you walk through the door, you’ll feel welcome. Altitude is a family-owned business and the staff is very knowledgeable—everyone can help with “what ails ya,” and each staff member is happy to answer whatever questions you may have. Additionally, the team at Altitude has an extensive headshop with hand-blown glass pipes from the country’s top artists; Darby Holm, Lunch Box, Cowboy, ABE (North Star Glass), Blade, and brand names like Illadelph, Medicali, and Jetter Tubes. sample menu selections staff favorites:: Jedi Indica This heavy-hitting indica dominant strain is at the top of the list for staff favorites here at Chronorado. The THC almost drips off the piney/lemon dense bud.

Purple Diesel Sativa Combining Purple Kush and Sour Diesel gives this hybrid an invigorating body high, but still leaves the patient to be productive in daily activities. This strain is a favorite for daytime medicating by our patients. These dark green/purple flowers give off that classic diesel punch, but with a nice fruity kick.

Razz Indica One of the most visually stunning strains that we produce at Chronorado, this strain packs a skunky/fruit-filled aroma thats tastes great but still gives that indica effect.

Chocolope Sativa Crossing OG Chocolate Thai and Cannalope Haze is a combination that has this strain in high demand. This strain produces a thick dark chocoate taste that lives up to its name.

Medicine Man Indica A proven medical marvel, Medicine Man is ideal for patients in need of high THC.

Super Lemon Haze Sativa

Chernobyl Hybrid

Chocolates

A two time Cannabis Cup winner that packs buttery, oily nice citrus floral tones before crushed and then sports an overwhelming lemon zest sort of aroma which mellows into lavender tones.

Trainwreck x Jack the Ripper x Trinity X crossed makes Chernobyl a mindnumbing onset, that also combines the medicinal effects you get from Jack the Ripper. A good choice for those needing relief from chronic pain.

250mg dark chocolate, white chocolate with cranberries, and milk chocolate with crispies

Booger Indica Strawberry Cough and Bubba Kush. Although it hasn't been around too long, it is soon becoming a favorite on our shelves. If you are looking for a strong long lasting effect with a fruity kick, this is the strain for you.

Skunberry Indica

Golden Goat Sativa One of the first strains we came to enjoy here at Chronorado. This strain packs a citrus burst and a cerebral rush, just ask Karl.

edibles::

This heavily scented strain is Skunk #1 x DJ Shorts Blueberry, a visually appealing strain that has shades of dark green and purple throughout the trichrome covered flowers. If you are a fan of skunk #1, this will definitely pique your interest.

Edi-Pure

Cheeba Chews

This strain has the distinct potential to lay you back on your couch with no chance of rising for several hours. It will not only take away your pain, but also relax your mind.

OG Kush Indica

The sweet, minty, candy-like flavor of Durban Poison is not the only thing most daytime patients like about this weed. It's also extremely potent and causes and extremely a joyful, upbeat yet relaxed, and somewhat tranquil high. Favored by growers with above average abilities, Durban Poison rewards those who cultivate her with huge buds loaded with THC and a large yield. She’s an extremely bush plant with a low calyx-to-leaf ratio. However, some growers use her trimming to make potent hash due to the amount of foliage they have after harvest.

From the sunny mountains of Southern California, OG Kush remains as one of the most in-demand strains of medicinal cannabis. Rock stars, movie stars, and every day hippies all enjoy its sticky feel, aromatic sent, crystal-covered buds, and waystoney high. It's an indica-dominant hybrid that produces an intense high, but also requires somewhat elongated recovery times. When properly grown and dried, its leaves are nearly neon green and are just a treat to look at. Add in the heavy crystallization that occurs during flowering over every inch of the plant and you'll see that OG Kush marijuana is revered for loads of excellent reasons.

Grand Daddy Purple Indica

Sour Diesel Sativa

Green bud nuggets begin to show purple hues as they mature on Granddaddy Purple cannabis plants. This all-indica marijuana strain is known worldwide for its many phenotypes that include Grape Ape, Grandaddy Grape Ape, and Purple Erkel to name just a few. She is able to produce heavy yields when left to growing the way she prefers. Indoors, this shrub-like plant will grow up to three feet. Outdoors, up to eight.

Excellent in the early morning, Sour Diesel gives you a bright, energetic, and quite possibly talkative wake-n-bake experience, mixed with just enough Indica calming to make you chill and thoughtful. These beautiful females top out at about six feet indoors and develop to display an ever-pleasing Christmas tree shape. As the ladies mature fully, they begin to display purple foliage and pistils with hues of pink. Loose buds, shaped like spears, are common.

Chem Dawg Indica

Sour Grape Hybrid

The famed Chem Dawg, aka Chemdawg, is one of the most potent Marijuana strains in existence. Originating in mystery and legend, Chem Dawg was supposedly found as a seed in a bag of high-quality bud bought by the strain's namesake, who is now breeding various new varieties with these genetics. Chem Dawg is powerful medicine, with a strong smell of Pine-Sol and jet fuel, and a very strong high—which can be too strong and anxiety-producing for less-experienced smokers. As the progenitor of many kush and diesel varieties, Chem Dawg is a proud parent of many currently popular marijuana strains.

A delectable hybrid of Grape Ape and the legendary Sour Diesel, this strain is gaining more and more popularity. The buds are medium-sized, light-green, and astonishingly coated with sticky tri-chromes. The aroma from these near-perfect nugs is fragrantly similar to white wine, citrus, and fruit, with undertones of sour dank. Arguably one of the best tasting medications around, Sour Grapes also has a potency that few other strains are able to compete with. The sweet, sour, grapey and candy-like flavor of this indica-dominant bud is followed by a most euphoric body high that won’t land you in a hopeless case of couch-lock but it will make laying down extremely comfortable.

This strain is hardy and vigorous, thriving in most conditions and doing especially well indoors and in greenhouse settings. It's a medium-sized, compact, dense plant with spiky forest-green leaves and ball-shaped buds with long orange hairs. The flavor is definitely a kush derivative, with citrusy and earthy notes, as well as hints of pine and spice. It's highly potent, and is an excellent choice for most medical treatment, but is especially beneficial for pain relief and appetite enhancement.

Despite the potency, this strain is rather clear-headed and leaves the user capable and relaxed, able to handle whatever situation may come their way. This strain is good for an early evening unwinding session, as it won’t incapacitate, but definitely relaxes the body and mind. Moderate pain relief, aid with nerve issues, aid with digestion, mood elevation, and body relaxation are all strong medical qualities which the Skywalker possesses.

The New York Power Diesel (NYPD) is an indoor power strain with a radical mix of Sativa Mexicana father and Afghan/Dutch indica mother. The Nirvana addition to the diesel family stays close to the New York variant. NYPD is an F1 hybrid that is balanced but sativa-dominant, with potential for gardeners and home breeders. Its mother plant, the Aurora Indica, is a combination of Northern Lights and an Afghan strain that was stabilized especially for use in this cross. The heavy, greasy narcotic effects of the Aurora Indica beautifully cut the edge of the crispy, speedy Oaxacan sativa father known as Eldorado. The resulting terpenoids have a powerful diesel aroma with a lemon-edged fuel flavor.

Aurora Indica's leaves are dark and impressively wide and its smell is dense and spicy, leading gardeners to anticipate the cosmic indica experience its name suggests. The buds are thick and greasy to the touch, with a deep Afghani flavor that is more apparent when grown in soil. A great stone before bed, this heavy buzz comes on quickly and can be quite sedative. People have reported hot ears as a common side effect when vaporizing. This strain has medicinal potential for treating hyperactivity and insomnia.

patient testimonials:: Testimonial #1 “I like Rocky Mountain Miracles because it’s run by a family. They care very much about their patients, all of them, especially ones with real health problems or who are on disability, like myself. I’ve received very good advice on certain edibles that have helped me tremendously with my PTSD, my immune disease, and chronic problems with my back. It has helped take me off most of my medications, where I’m not having to take as many pharmaceutical drugs anymore and I can rely more on natural medicine.” —Jannae, patient at Rocky Mountain Miracles

Testimonial #2 “Shopping at Rocky Mountain Miracles is fun. I laugh with Ali and her daughters every time I come in and they are so friendly and knowledgeable. There are always new products to try and they take the time to explain how the medication can affect me and answer my questions. They have a great selection of edibles. I have horrible back pain and prefer edibles during the day—my favorites are the Jolly Drops. I always feel like I’m getting a good deal—like I’m part of the family.” —Susie, Rocky Mountain Miracles patient
