About the Cover: Showing Ultimate Bull Power this month on the cover is JP Rio Grande, as he stands proud and strong. JP Rio Grande has been named the Ultimate Bull at the LWC for the past three years (2008, 2009, 2010). His definitive traits are being cast to all of his offspring. Six good examples of his ability to sire excellence join him on the cover: Hubbell’s Rio Darlin’ (owned by Mark Hubbell), Hubbells Rio Glory (owned by Dave Hovingh), Hubbells Rio Linda (owned by Tom A. Smith), BL Rio Catchit (owned by Bob & Pam Loomis), SDR Rios CJ (owned by Panther Creek Ranch) and Rio Grande Chex (owned by Loomis/Friedrich Partnership). JP Rio Grande is owned in partnership between Hubbell Longhorns, Hudson Longhorns and Panther Creek Ranch. If Ultimate Bull Power is what you are looking for in your herd, JP Rio Grande will bring you those traits and more.

From the Chairman of the Board Dear TLBAA Members: I would like to thank everyone that helped make the 2010 TLBAA Horn Showcase a huge success. Brent Bolen did a super job as Chairman of the event but I know that he could not have done so without the help of his lovely wife, Cindy. The TLBAA staff worked long hours before, during and after the event to make everything happen. The large group of volunteers worked tirelessly to “get it done”. The exhibitors brought a great group of cattle to be measured and displayed for everyone to view. The sponsors opened their pockets to provide the support to make the event happen. The spectators congregated to watch the spectacular parade of cattle come through the arena. Texas Longhorn breeders, new and old, then filled the house for the Friday evening banquet. The grand finale was the Horn Showcase sale where the consignors offered the opportunity for so many quality Texas Longhorn cattle to be shared with other breeders and the buyers jumped at the chance to add them to their herds. Also, a big thank you to all who hosted, worked and entered in the satellite measuring, which gave so many breeders that could not make it to Fort Worth a chance to participate. For me, the highlight was experiencing the positive energy and watching the great camaraderie that was exhibited by all in attendance. The new TLBAA Web site has been launched and is still being improved weekly, with many more exciting things to come. If you haven’t visited the site lately, please take the time to do so at www.tlbaa.org. The new GPS registry system is being used in the office by the TLBAA staff. Once the system is proven to function according to the TLBAA rules, it will be rolled out to the membership. It is important that members get into the habit of completing their registration and transfer paperwork properly, as the new system requires all of the information to be accurate. All active and lifetime members in Division B (Texas) should have received their Director Nomination ballots. Please take a minute to participate in the process. Once the nominations have been tabulated and those nominated have confirmed they will accept the nomination, the voting ballots will be mailed. The TLBAA By-Laws and Rules & Regulations Committee presented proposed changes to the TLBAA By-Laws. The Board of Directors voted to accept the changes as presented by the Committee. These proposed changes will be printed in the December issue of the Trails magazine and the members will vote on them at the upcoming Annual Membership Meeting, which is scheduled for January 14, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. in Fort Worth. Meeting information will be published in the Trails and on E-Trails. The show season is picking up steam and offers another avenue to showcase our cattle to the general public. Our youth group, TLBT, not only do a great job in the show ring but also as good ambassadors of the breed. Recently, a lady that was showing two different breeds of cattle arrived at a Fair thinking that her Texas Longhorn cattle were showing the following day, when in fact they were showing that morning. She was overheard saying there was no way she could get all of her cattle ready in time for the show. A group of Texas Longhorn youth jumped into action taking her cattle to be washed and made ready. She could not believe it when the youth presented her cattle to her in time for them to be taken into the show ring and compete. We should all be proud of our youth. The next TLBAA Best at West Auction will be on Saturday, December 4, 2010 in West, Texas on IH 35 just north of Waco, Texas. The Premier Heifer Sale will be January 15, 2011 at the Will Rogers Complex in Fort Worth. I look forward to seeing you at a Texas Longhorn event soon.

Texas Longhorn Trails

T

here is a lengthy list of resources that makes the Texas Longhorn industry the spectacular entity it has become. Included in that list of resources is the magazine you are reading, the staff that produced it, the registry and registry personnel, the new computer software, a central office and state of the art communications to keep membership informed, dedicated officers and an involved membership – and the list goes on. It goes without saying that without the cattle, none of this would exist. But just as important as the cattle are the visionaries who saw something special in the remnant of the once vast herds and set their minds and fortunes to the task of preserving that remnant. To those pioneers we are all indebted. The heirs of those pioneers who saved the breed have nurtured the magnificent gene pool; they have selected and culled, watered and fed, molded and shaped with the inner vision that seeks perfection. Their names are honored in the families of the long-horned breed and in the annals of the registry. Some are living legends; some who contributed significantly may be known only to family and friends, but everyone who loves and preserves the stately Texas Longhorn deserves a place of honor. This article acknowledges three trail blazers who have compiled enviable records of accomplishment and introduces three relative newcomers who have chosen to further advance the breed. Each has his own vision and his own methodology in their chosen path toward the common goal of breed preservation and improvement. Trail blazers and new enthusiasts – these also are vital resources.

Owen McGill

Legendary cattleman Owen McGill of McGill Ranch, Wheatland, Wyoming, is 93 years old and has been in the cattle business all his life…and a few months longer. A Hereford heifer calf was branded for him before he was born, and he continued raising top-of-the-line registered Herefords until he sold out after about fifty years. Most of the cattle in his dispersal would trace back to that first calf. His successful program was based on line breeding; he bought his registered Hereford bulls from the same breeder for 30 years or more during his Hereford involvement. “That’s about the only way I knew to breed cattle. Some tell us we need an outcross, but every time I tried an outcross, I’d find some things I didn’t like, and I would have to get rid of those and start over again.” “We’ve been in the Longhorn business 36 years. I thought I was pretty lucky when we got into Longhorns to buy 15 head of cows that were Yates and Butler cows – they all looked about alike and they all bred alike. Then we got Bold Ruler, which was Butler breeding, to put on these cows. We stayed with that breeding as much as we could. We have brought in some other bulls since then – Tabasco – we got him from Johnny Hoffman, who I’ll always think was probably the best breeder that ever was. His cattle November 2010

are still bringing a premium since he is gone.” “Tabasco’s mother was the longest-horned cow in the breed at the time I got Tabasco. Then we put Chuckwagon in. He was out of Tari Graves, that I’ll always think was my favorite of all those cows in the Longhorn breed. A lot of good cattle go back to that old Tari Graves cow. Then there was Hunt’s Command Respect – we bought a half interest from Doug Hunt. He was a grandson of Emperor, a bull Johnny Hoffman bred. Then there was another cross on Hunt’s Command Respect from cattle that Betty Lamb had. Betty Lamb was one of the foremost breeders, and she was real strong on Butler influence. Most of the rest of the bulls were raised on our ranch and out of our cows. We have been Butler-influenced all along in this Longhorn breeding.” “Years ago, Rocky Reagan had topped the Yates cattle, and we got the top off of those. Yates was pretty strong in the Wildlife Refuge cattle, and at one time the Refuge cattle were the most sought-after cattle in the Longhorn industry.” “For newcomers – it takes quite a long time to get a feel for breeding cattle, especially if you don’t have a livestock background. After all my life in the cattle business, the longer I live the more I find out I don’t know what I did think I knew about in the past.” Owen still lives on the home ranch where he was born. His grandparents came to Wyoming in the 1870’s and settled on the Laramie plains. His wife’s family settled there at about the same time. His grandfather, John McGill “…was in politics quite a bit.” He was President of the Wyoming

21

State Senate from 1895 to 1905. But neither Owen nor his dad ever got into politics. “All I could think about was improving my ranch and my cattle and my horses. When we got into the Longhorn business, we pretty much got out of the horse business. I got tired of getting bucked off, fell on, rolled on and kicked. One of these old cows will kick you, but not near as hard as a horse. There came a point in my life that I didn’t want to play cowboy quite so much.” As a young man, McGill rode for Chappel Brothers CBC outfit that ran an estimated 13,000 wild horses on the Laramie Plains. They shipped these horses back to Rockford, Illinois and made dog food out of them. They started the Ken-L-Ration Dog Food; that line of dog food is still in existence. He also rode for a 42-member cattlemen’s association called “The Shotgun Roundup Association” that ran about 40,000 head of cattle on the Laramie Plains. “I got to ride for those two wagons, the old CBC and the Shotgun. Back in those days, the country was all wide open – the biggest part of it was public land – but that’s all fenced now. It’s quite a deal, when you live this long and can look back and see all the changes that have been made. It’s a different world any more. Up to the time when I was about 20 years old, this land was all wide open. It was made up of government land and school sections. In the eastern part of Wyoming, there was some farming, but where we are, right on the edge of it, you could get on your horse and ride literally to the Utah state line -- that would be about 300 miles without ever having to get off your horse. You might have to ride around a few homesteads on the Platte River. Now the BLM has come in and that land is all leased and fenced up; makes me feel sort of lonesome and out of place.” “We joined the TLBAA in 1974 and we used to go to all the Longhorn sales and the conventions; it was fun and we sure had a good time. I always thought a lot of the TLBAA. Now they’ve got it split up into all these different groups -- I don’t see how they could have all the fun we used to have! I guess I’ll have to say that old saying, ‘…back in the good ol’ days.’” “Bull power is what’s made our cattle. Like that Top Caliber and Sittin Bull – I don’t know, there’s been eight or ten bulls we’ve raised here on our ranch that hit seventy inches the day they were three-year-olds. That old Top Caliber – his horns are still growing. He’s quite a bull. I still have his mother here on the ranch and she’s still raising me some real good calves.” “There’s another bull out there that was bred on our ranch, out of our cows and bull. That bull’s name is Respect Me. He would be a half-brother to Top Caliber and Sittin Bull, and now he is the second-longest horned bull in the breed.” Most of McGill’s cattle can trace back to the original group of Yates cows he started with. “I’ve got a little bull,” he said, “that I can go back ten generations on the cow side that we raised here on the ranch. We haven’t added any cow lines to our cattle; they all trace back to those first cattle we had.” “Looking back, this Longhorn business has been a lot of fun!” “If you read this, it would be my advice to a new breeder: go back home, do what you were going to do in the first place, and you will probably be right!”

Dr. Frank Anderson, Jr.

Dr. Frank Anderson, Jr. was a practicing physician in Bryan, Texas who taught part time at Texas A & M University as a professor of ophthalmology. Although he bought a ranch in 1968, he had leased it out for 18 years, and then as he approached retirement, he decided to develop his Longhorn herd. Now 82 years old, Dr. Anderson has been in the Longhorn business 24 years. He continues to do the day-to-day management and most of the ranch work himself, except for any veterinary needs. Longhorns are essentially a three-generation outfit, with grandson, Richard Wakefield being very helpful. Son, Frank Anderson III, lives in Houston; he is very much apart of the

22

operation, time permenting. Daughter, Edie Wakefield, handles the communications. The first Longhorn cattle were purchased in 1986, and then in 1988, after these initial purchases, Dr. Anderson decided to go straight Butler. “I was lucky enough to get Don Juan of Christine and Redmac Beau Butler as early Butler herdsires; I also purchased Miss Redmac 256 – all three of these were of Red McCombs breeding.” The combination of Don Juan and Miss Redmac 256 resulted in Coach being born in 1994. That same year, a Meshell cow he owned named MF Sweetheart bred to Don Juan, produced a calf that grew to be the 75” tip-to-tip cow called Brown Beauty. Anderson’s Butler-bred herd is based mainly on Don Juan of Christine and Miss Redmac 256 through their famous son, Coach, plus a number of cows purchased from Butler breeder Dewitt Meshell. Coach’s first two Butler animals were Sabrina and Brush Country Queen, both born in the fall of 1996. Earlier this year, Sabrina measured 79-1/4 inches tip-to-tip; Brush Country Queen, born a few days later, measured 78-1/2 inches tip-to-tip. “That’s a very nice way to start your Butler herd,” observed Dr. Anderson. Coach was exclusively Anderson’s herdsire until he sold a half interest to Bob Loomis in 1999. “Coach spent the next year at Bob’s place,” explained Anderson, “then was back at my place in 2001; after that, Bob bought full interest.” “We had another bull coming along, named FA Field Marshal, who was a replacement. The interesting thing to me is, during the time Coach was with us, over 20 percent of his cow offspring later had 75” of horn tip-to-tip.” FA Field Marshal turned out to be a 70” tip-to-tip bull and weighs 1700 pounds. He is a son of Coach and MF TNT, a cow whose horns now measure 79+ inches tip-to-tip. He is now co-owned by Brent and Cindy Bolen. “Until the last few years,” said Dr. Anderson, “our operation was virtually straight Butler. Then in 2007, we decided to move into blends more. Stephanie 177, a 79-1/4” cow bred to the blend bull Bar B Q, produced two embryo heifers and an embryo bull that are being used now.” “We bred a daughter of Unlimited / MF TNT to the FA Contender. More recently, we bought a fine young cow from Larry Stewart named LLL Showstopper; she is a Maximus daughter out of a 79” cow named Horsehead Show Time.” “We are beginning to open up into the blend area because the horn growth is so great in some of those fine bred cows. I’ll continue the Butler herd always, but the herd is going to be more balanced regarding blend Longhorns.” In addition to Coach and FA Field Marshal, a number of prominent sires have come from the Anderson program, including Coach Anderson, Leonidas, Luminary, Coachwhip, Atlas and Brown Bomber. Outstanding cows produced include Sabrina, Full Credit, Brush Country Queen, BL Coach Sweetheart, Mascara, Stephanie 177, Olympia, Brown Beauty, Miss Tricolor and Alberta the high selling cow at the most recent McCombs Fiesta sale. Dr. Anderson observed in a previous September 2006 Trails article, “It is also very special, to spend time experiencing the cattle, the land and nature in general. It is easy to see why there are cowboy poets and philosophers.”

Michael McLeod

Michael McLeod’s grandfather went to school in West Columbia, TX with foundation Texas Longhorn breeder Jack Phillips, and growing up in the historic South Texas bedgrounds of the Longhorn breed, Michael got to meet many pioneers whose names are legendary in the Longhorn industry. Michael was well-grounded in the cattle business before he got his first registered Texas Longhorns in 1976, and he still runs a sizeable herd of commercial cattle near his home place at Edna and in Texas Longhorn Trails

south Texas. In addition to being a solid fixture in the Butler Breeders, he works as an order buyer of commercial cattle, attending several auction markets weekly. He breeds some of his Longhorn cows to Charolais bulls, and feeds the resulting cross-bred calves. He will also feed some of his straight Longhorn calves in a commercial feedlot. “We sell the calves,” he said, “and the people eat the meat.” “My great-grandfather on my mother’s side of the family had cattle, and her dad had cattle. My dad’s side had a dairy, but his grandfather had cattle, and I worked for them when I was growing up. We had a small herd, too, when I was growing up. Just cattle. I wanted the Longhorns, so I finally got me some.” “I bought my first Longhorn cattle at a sale in San Antonio that Alan Sparger put on – that was in October of ’76. He had some cattle he bought from Hale Schlaben down in the Valley, and some guest consignors like the YO. I bought a Sam Houston daughter, a Sam Houston son, a WR bull and some Schlaben heifers …I bought seven or eight head. Then in ’77 I heard about the Lepper herd, which is a sub-family of the Butlers, owned by Peggy Jobes. Her dad was Forest Lepper, and her husband at the time was Don Jobes, and he was the ramrod of the Houston Stock Show. When we went to the Stock Show, I went and looked at the cattle and ended up buying them. They turned out to be mostly Butler cows…and that’s how I got started with the Butlers.” “I try to raise the best cattle I can, get them more horn. The Butlers won’t compete, total-horn wise, with the blend cattle – but most of the bighorned blend cattle have Butler blood in them.” Early on, when the historic seven families of the Texas Longhorns were differentiated, said McLeod, the Butlers had the biggest horns of any family. “I do have a Butler bull with 74-and-change horns named Hunter MC 69 – I sold a half-interest in him to Matt Westmoreland’s Westfarms. They took him to the Horn Showcase this year, and he should be the biggesthorned Butler bull in the breed. I raised him…I raised his mother, his father and his grandparents. His father is a bull I raised named Festus MC 27, and his dam is Jackie Lynn 90.” “I’ve been in Jackson County since 1970, and here on this place 17 years.” “I breed some of my Longhorn cows to Charolais bulls; I take those calves and feed them in a commercial feedlot. And I buy other cattle – Longhorns, Longhorn-crosses, Brahman, whatever -- the plainer kind of cattle, and I feed them also. Sometimes they make money. The ones I already own, they do OK, because they’re already mine.” “I’ve used straight Butler bulls since 1980. We have about 700 cows and most of them are straight Butler and most of them carry my brand; I may have a handful that are not straight Butler. Most of the bulls I’m using right now I bred; I bought one in the second Butler sale I’ve been using -- PJ Buttons -- he is about 12 years old; he goes back to Dr. Anderson breeding. And I’ve got a young bull, a Henry son from the Ramie Griffin line that I got from Kaso Kety. I’ve got a lot of the Webb cattle in my herd, and I’m using one of their bulls – he goes back to the Tommie bull that they raised.” There’s no doubt Michael McLeod is partial to the Butler family of Texas Longhorn cattle. “I breed them, I raise them, I grow them out,” stated McLeod. “I like looking at them, and I like owning them.”

Brennan Potts

About eleven years ago, Brennan and Michele Potts of Emory, Texas, bought two steers from their neighbor, Joe Munsch. A few years later, after they moved to a larger place, they had the space for their growing interest in Texas Longhorns. Their next purchase, in 2006, was six small heifers from Robert King, Canyon Lake, Texas. “Like everybody else,” laughed Brennan, “I was just going to have a few Longhorns, but after they started growing, we decided we were going to get November 2010

a little more serious.” “We wound up buying a few more cows in ’06 – mostly straight Butler…” to go along with the original six, which were also straight Butler. He did buy one blend cow that was heavily Butler-influenced. And then another Butler cow with some horn… “And that’s how it all got started.” As the cow herd grew, they sold the steers, then when the heifers became of breeding age, bought a young bull, a Field Marshal son from Elmer and Susan Rosenberger, expecting to use him a couple of years. After mentoring from the Rosenbergers, Robert King, Robert Richey and Bob Loomis, they made the decision to build their Longhorn program around high quality cattle. They attended the 2008 Butler sale, bought some more animals, and determining they needed more bull power, purchased Wrangler Chex from Bob Loomis. “That was an investment for our herd. With Wrangler Chex we felt we got the quality, the Tommie line, the horn spread and everything we needed to advance our investment. We are getting good calves by him now and we are focused on adding high quality animals, the VJ Tommie and Coach cross especially. We also have some of Robert Richey’s cows in our herd – he has been very successful with his Butler cows, so we’ve purchased some cattle from Robert and Kim. We will cross those with our VJ Tommie and see how that comes out.” Although they have calves from their own herd on the ground, Brennan and Michele are still actively buying quality cattle. “We bought the highselling heifer and the high-selling cow at the last Butler sale at Lockhart. We are trying to buy the best genetics and the most horn we can possibly afford. The market has been off a little bit, so we have been fortunate to add great bloodlines, great conformation and great horn in our last investments.” Brennan graduated from the University of Texas and came back into the family propane business in 1990. “It is primarily a retail propane distributor,” explained Brennan. “We do all kinds of domestic and commercial propane sales; I really enjoy that and it has been very rewarding for our family. The Longhorns are kind of our therapy.” Brennan and Michele have four children ranging from the eighth grade to a three-year-old. The boys are active in football and the oldest girl in volleyball and cheerleading. The three-year-old girl is the boss, says Brennan. “She gets anything she wants, and she can name nearly every Longhorn in the pasture. You can’t head for the pasture with a sack of feed and not have her with you.” “We feel like we’ve got a really good cross going,” says Brennan of his Longhorns, “and we are striving for the higher end, conformation and hornwise. We are very focused on not keeping anything that’s not going to produce some horn and conformation. We are trying to be very diligent in our culling. I was told by a veteran breeder one time that if you want to get there, you’ve got to cull relentlessly, ands that’s exactly what we’re trying to do. We are not going to offer anything in a sale that we wouldn’t want to keep for ourselves. Through that, it means a lot of trips to the sale barn and some sales at private treaty to someone who just wants some Longhorn cattle in the pasture. Wrangler Chex is doing a really good job for us, and we are looking forward to the day that we can bring something we have bred ourselves to a sale and be proud of it. It won’t be long – the next year or so we feel like we’ll have some really good cattle to offer.”

Rick Friedrich

Rick, who lives near Houston, Texas, bought his first Texas Longhorns in 2001 – a few steers just for entertainment – and put them on a ranch he owns in the Texas Hill Country. “I got to liking them,” he said, “and I bought a bull and four cows. I rocked along with the few that I had until 2005, when I took a load of steers to an auction and sold them; I just dropped them off and went home. Some

23

of the steers sold for $450 and some sold for $2500 and I couldn’t figure out why I made more on some and less on others since they were all about the same size and they were all five-year-old animals.” “I got phone calls from the people who paid the most, asking what the steer’s name was, what it answered to and what kind of feed it liked. They were telling me that the steer had over 70 inches of horn, and I realized real quick that the money was in the horn. They were paying extra money for extra horn.” “Discussing this with another breeder, he asked if I had looked at the Dalgood chart for horn projections. I got interested in horn projections so I built some chutes and measured every cow on the ranch and found out I didn’t have a sixty-inch cow. Then I did the projections on them and figured out I didn’t have one that would ever be sixty inches.” “Those projections are a moving target – some folks don’t believe in it, but it is a real good guideline. It depends on which way the cow’s horns turn – but it’s a good rule of thumb for me.” “Now I’m looking for a heifer that is fifty inches as a two-year-old and a bull that is sixty inches as a two-yearold, and anything better than that is a plus. At one point, I improved everything to where I didn’t have an animal that was less than sixty inches – or at least projected that – on the place, and now I have moved up to sixty-five, and I hope pretty soon to get that number up to seventy. That seems to be the way the market is going; you have to have cattle in that criteria for them to be of value.” “In a nutshell, that is the direction I have gone in building my herd. My herd is very young. Instead of buying cattle that are already there, I have been trying to buy young ones that would get there; it seems like you can get two or three for the same price.” “I have ended up with name-brand genetics – not because I’m seeking name-brand genetics, it just happens to be that that’s where the horn is. I’ve got a lot of Rio Grande stuff; I’ve got a lot of Gun Maker stuff; I’m getting a little bit of either Hunt’s Command Respect or Top Caliber stuff. I’m going to end up with a blended herd, but that is kind of the direction my cattle stuff has gone.” “The first and second pieces of property I owned (and still own) were passed down to me from two original family-owned ranches. There were 77.5 acres and it always had live water on it. In 2001, I added 1,100 acres to it and later sold 519 after developing the Silver Wings Fly-In Ranch. The River Ranch name came into use because the Pedernales River runs through the north end of the ranch.” “I keep about a hundred cattle on the ranch; about thirty brood cows in two pastures with two different bulls and I’ve got about twenty cows I’m using as recips for some of my very best cows to do the embryo flush. The balance are young bulls and young heifers – I’ve got a pasture for each of them and I’ll keep them until they’re around two years old. I’m always looking for a better bull; I’ll cull the bulls out at the age of two; if I find one better than I have, I’ll make the switch. The same with the heifers; if some of them look better than the brood cow, I’ll replace them.” “When I started messing with my Hill Country ranch, I was more involved with the deer hunting than the cattle, but that’s kind of changed. I still sell a lot of deer hunts, but the guys are hunting in a pasture that I manage cattle in as well. Some of my pastures go from 200 to 400 acres – they’re not big enough to hide from the cows and they’re too big to find a deer in. The ranch has a Fredericksburg address, but I’m closer to Kerrville in Gillespie County. I’ve got about three-quarters of a mile of river frontage; a real pretty, clear river; you can see the bass swimming around in it. We love the river; it’s kind of the highlight of the ranch, there’s a five-foot elevation change and a small waterfall.” “Friedrich Road was named after my grandfather (Lonnie Friedrich) and his brother (Charles Friedrich) who had neighboring ranches on Rural

24

Route 163 before it was named Friedrich Road. My dad, and his brother and four sisters were raised on the Lonnie Friedrich Ranch. It’s pretty cool to have the last name Friedrich on Friedrich Road in Fredericksburg.”

Matt Westmoreland

Even as a child, Matt Westmoreland was intrigued by Texas Longhorn cattle, although he didn’t own any until about six years ago when he became acquainted with Kaso Kety. His family had dairy cattle and was involved in a commercial plant nursery. After selling the dairy cattle, they raised commercial beef cattle, then moved to registered Limousin cattle a few years. Kaso talked to him about the hardiness, ease of calving and self-sufficiency of the Texas Longhorn, so Matt acted on his lifelong interest, sold the Limousin herd and began buying Texas Longhorns. “There wasn’t anything interesting about the Limousin cattle,” Matt reflected, “just whatever was the biggest, fattest, that was the best one. But they never had any flash to them, and the Longhorns have definitely added that element. We can run about twice as many Longhorns as we could commercial beef cows or the registered Limousins. The beef cattle eat so much more and are such bigger cattle that you can’t run as many per acre. With the Longhorns, even on the commercial end, the ropers aren’t worth as much, but when I can run twice as many cows to the acre, the dollars actually come out about the same.” “We have really enjoyed the Longhorns,” affirmed Westmoreland. “Breeding them, different bloodlines, selecting for different traits – it has been a real pleasure.” Since he began his involvement because of Kaso Kety, you would assume Westmoreland’s Longhorns would be Butlers, but that is not the case. “We do have a lot of Butler,” Matt said, “but we are not exclusively Butler. I do think Butlers have a nice niche on the market, and Butler breeders appreciate pedigrees a lot more. Last year, we took a trip to South Carolina to the Creek Plantation where we visited with manager Steve Hancock and bought some cows that gave our Butler program a real boost. We also bought two bulls from Michael McLeod, and one of them, Hunter MC 69, won two bronzes, for Tip-to-Tip and Composite, at this year’s Horn Showcase. This is putting our Butler program into high gear.” “I like out-crossing a good bit; using blend bulls on Butler cows and vice versa. We have been able to get some good hybrid vigor doing that.” About a year and a half ago, Westmoreland helped Maurice Ladnier with the Dixie Classic auction. “I partnered with Maurice on that auction in Mississippi, and that has been real good. Maurice has been a real help in these Texas Longhorns, too. He is kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum – I’ve got Kaso in one ear “all straight Butler,” and Maurice in the other, “Yeah, Butler is real nice, but to get the horns, you really need to put a blend bull on Butler cows or Butler bull on blend cows.” I’ve got two real good mentors in both of those guys.” “They have helped me out a lot, and doing that sale with Maurice has been a real positive thing for our program.” The Westmoreland acreage near Franklinton, Louisiana has been in the family over 100 years. It includes pasture land for the cattle plus about 20 acres in front for the wholesale plant nursery where they sell shrubbery, mostly hardy ornamentals and trees. “That’s two full-time jobs,” Matt observed, “we’ve got the cows right here on the place and we’ve got the nursery, so we are always busy doing something.” Being active, doing things and being involved were instrumental in Matt Westmoreland honored with the “Mel Raley Rising Star Award” in the TLBAA for 2009. And the flash and color of his Longhorn cattle make his part of Louisiana even more interesting. Texas Longhorn Trails

In an email I received this photo from John Hever, Johnson City, TX, and the following explanation:

“This is L Reckon I Can, a Betty Lamb bred cow born 1/1993. She did not come to cubes a few weeks ago so I went, hatchet in hand, to take home the skull, and lo and behold, look what I found. She had a heifer calf Thank God. These animals are magnificent.” November 2010

& A Little of That

hip Update TRAILS COVER POLICY The following policy was revised during the October 16, 2010 Board of Directors meeting held in Fort Worth, TX: Need For Policy/Discussion The cover makes the first and most important impression to the reader and is the most valuable page of the magazine. Because the 2009 Board of Directors requested that the Trails sell covers to increase revenue, it is imperative that a policy on cover format be set in order to keep the best image of the Trails intact. Policy Proposal • Photograph for the cover is vertical and is of the highest quality with a 300 dpi. • Trails logo shall not be altered to accomodate a photo, unless it enhances the image of the magazine. • Mailing label and bar code are two rectangular shapes beginning at the bottom left hand corner and continuing to the right side will not be moved to accomodate a photo due to mailing policies. • The Trails will accept no more than 5 separate photos (one photo is preferred). • No copy will be added to the cover to identify animals, events or other promotions unless it is a TLBAA official announcement. • All copy regarding the photo(s) on the cover will be placed on the Table of Contents page under the heading “About the Cover”. • At least a third of a page within the magazine will be available for the purchaser of the cover to continue with copy regarding the cover if space on “About the Cover” is lacking. • The editor in chief and the art director of the Trails will have final approval of covers. • By following these guidelines, the purchaser of the cover can be assured that the highest quality of production standards will be used to provide a professional result. TLBT

President’s Message As fall is here and winter on the way, I am sure we are all appreciating the cooler weather. I hope you have all been able to attend a few of the Longhorn shows and events this fall. I would like to thank everyone who has made it possible for the youth to be able to exhibit such a wonderful breed of cattle. We appreciate your support. The new TLBT t-shirts have arrived and we’ve been selling them at the shows and events. They are available in light blue and tan and match this year’s theme of, “Stars and Stripes and Old Country Nights.” They will be sold for $18 each. We will also continue to sell the gray breeder’s brand t-shirts for $15 each, but when they are sold out, they are gone and will not be reprinted. The TLBT is also selling our new TLBT hoodies. They are available in chocolate brown and hunter green (prices will vary by size). The TLBT has a new website in the making. Past TLBT president, Molly Clubb with Hired Hand, has donated her time to design a website for the Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow. The youth will be looking for sponsors for the website to help cover the cost of maintaining the domain each year. Our new web address will be www.LonghornYouth.org. We are really looking forward to having our own website that we can update with current photo, events and more. I would like to thank Molly Clubb for all that she is doing to help promote and support the TLBT. The TLBAA has recently given us a display similar to their own. We are honored to accept such a gift from the TLBAA and would like to give them a big “thank you”. The TLBT Board of Directors has been working on choosing photos for the display, and they have finally been printed and the display is ready for use. Please come visit us at our new TLBT booth and take a look at all the neat TLBT items that we will be selling to help make this an even a stronger organization. Happy Trails,

TLBT Youth sh ow Nights bandan Stars and Stripes and Old C as that will be for sale at vari ountry along with T-sh ous events irts.

Jacob Faske TLBT President

Rolla Forcum Rolla has served in the United States Marine Corps for four active years. He has been a TLBAA member for eight or more years. Rolla served as an officer and then Vice President of the TLBT. He has also served as President of Oklahoma’s Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow. Rolla and his step dad, Tony Anderson, who is an Ag teacher in Moore, Oklahoma, were showing another breed of cattle when they were introduced to the majestic Texas Longhorn. They saw the Texas Longhorn and thought that they should give it a try. They have shown Texas Longhorns ever since. Thank you, Rolla, for serving our country so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. We appreciate your service.

The TLBT theme for the year is “Stars and Stripes and Old Country Nights.” We will be honoring our troops this year. If you are serving or have served in the US Military, please contact Sarah Faske, TLBT Reporter, sarahfaske@gmail.com. We would like to recognize all Longhorn breeders and those serving alongside them that have helped to protect our country and the freedoms that we enjoy.

AFFILIATE NEWS Texas Longhorn Breeders New Mexico Wade Wilson, President (505) 321-4900 This reporter would like to begin by apologizing to Sylvia Johnson for incorrectly listing owner’s name in the September Affiliate News regarding the placing of her TLBAA Hall of Fame halter bull. At this year’s NM State Fair Longhorn Shows, we were down in quantity but not quality and overall, still bested the other cattle breeds in participation and spectator interest. We’d like to thank Show Chairman Bill Van Gundy and Show Announcer Lynn Starritt. We’d like to congratulate the members who won either a Grand or a Reserve Grand Championship and in some cases, both, in the Open competition: Tarah Moore, Kasey Clark, Dennis Urbanke, Wade & Kristi Wilson, David & Lynn Starritt, Judy Steel, Dr. Fritz & Rebecca Moeller, and Sammantha Larisch. Bob Pate, Superintendent of Beef, presented Bill Van Gundy, Wade Wilson, Tyler Starritt, Clay Bob Stearns and Robert Smoot with the Fair’s annual Herdsman Awards. And way to go, Jacob Metevier. His photo, showing him entering the ring with “ST Rodeo Queen”, was featured in the Albuquerque Journal, which is distributed over the entire State of New Mexico. We’d like to thank show sponsors La Cueva Lodge, Henry & Mary Street (Ponderosa Valley Winery), Preventech Auto Services, Dr. Raymond Loretto (Loretto Veterinary Clinic), Dr. Wayne A. Luco, Connie Collis (CWW Feed Store & More), Moeller’s Cross M Texas Longhorns and Desert Sun Motors (Alamogordo location). Next affiliate event is our annual meeting, December 4th, at K-Bob’s Restaurant in Ruidoso, NM. The meeting will take place at noon but members are encouraged to arrive at 11:00 am for a dutch treat lunch. Contact information: Lynn Starritt, 915252-4118

Texas Longhorn Breeders Gulf Coast Association Dr. Lou Shields, President (713) 771-8810 - Drpunkin@aol.com Representatives from the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America (TLBAA), the Texas Longhorn Breeders Gulf Coast Association (TLBGCA) and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) recently met to initiate professional communication, understanding and cooperative support for the TLBAA Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Texas Longhorn Show. Under the leadership of Dr, Lou Shields, President of the TLBGCA, a meeting was scheduled to bring unity and harmony between HLSR, TLBAA and the TLBGCA with regard to the Texas Longhorn

38

cattle exhibited at the largest stock show in North America. Members representing the three groups included Allyson Tjoelker, Chairman, HLSR Livestock Competition; Steven Zunker, Chairman, TLBAA; Pam Galloway, Special Events Chairman, TLBAA; Stephen Head, TLBGCA/HLSR liaison and Dr. Lou Shields, President, TLBGCA. Areas of concern included open show premium money, youth belt buckles, fees, delay with move in, delay in release, limited check in personnel, class designations, make-ready area, grounds passes, show programs and international week. After a lengthy, detailed group discussion the following details were agreed by members of the meeting for the 2011 HLSR Texas Longhorn Show. • Premium money will be paid to open show winners. • Belt buckles will be awarded in the youth show to class winners and showmanship winners. • All fees will be paid to HLSR. HLSR will then pay TLBAA the World Qualifying fees. • The dates and times of the 2011 HLSR will follow the same schedule as 2010. Entry deadline is February 15, 2011. • Last year’s delay in moving in and releasing should not be a recurring problem. • HLSR will try to work to improve the check in process. • All class designations will follow the TLBAA guidelines provided by Pam Galloway. • TLBGCA will assign a member to work with the HLSR personnel in the make ready area. • One pass will be assigned per exhibitor/owner for the 2011 show. • Show programs will be included in the check-in packets, however; they will still cost $1 each. • TLBAA/TLBGCA may host an exhibit booth during International Week, March 1-8, 2011 for a fee of $100 per animal/stall. Dr. Lou Shields will serve as the TLBAA contact for the HLSR Longhorn Show and Stephen Head will serve as the coordinator of the TLBGCA’s role with the show. For more information please contact Dr. Lou Shields at drpunkin@aol.com or Stephen Head at headshorns@hotmail.com.

Louis Christa, President (210) 863-7003 – Lchri58@msn.com If you were not able to attend the STLA Fall Field Day, you missed out on a full day of fun and learning. Over fifty Texas Longhorn breeders and enthusiasts were greeted by warm sunshine by the El Coyote ranch crew at the STLA Fall Field Day held October 9, 2010. The fun day included food, education, camaraderie and beautiful Texas Longhorn cattle. After a meet and

greet, Dr. Boyd Bien of BovaGen gave an informative session on “Reproduction and Embryo Transfer.” The El Coyote staff then gave a training session using Longhorn skulls and the “official” horn measuring technique. After that, everyone had the opportunity to watch the official measuring of the TLBAA Horn Showcase entered animals. These included some of the longest horned steers, bulls and cows in the breed. In keeping with the theme of the day, all attendees were then invited to join in the fun and guess the true measurement on one of the awesome El Coyote steers. Jason Christa was the winner of a beautiful hat rack with his entry that was within 1/8” of the actual tip-to-tip measurement of the steer.

TLBAA Breed Advisory Committee’s

November - Herd Management Guide Spring Calving: 1. As fall approaches and warm season grasses become dormant, realize that the protein and energy values of your pastures will decrease below levels necessary to satisfy nutritional requirements of pregnant females entering the last third of their pregnancy. Feed pregnant mature females to consume adequate energy, protein, minerals and vitamins prior to calving. If pasture grass is limiting due to overgrazing or poor rainfall during the summer, then energy is your first concern. Feeding a medium (8-10 percent crude protein) to high quality (15-17 percent crude protein) hay free choice will provide an excellent source of energy for the females. If pasture grass is plentiful, but dormant and poor in quality, then protein is generally your first concern. Assuming that your cows are in good body condition, feeding low levels of a high crude protein supplement (3240 percent crude protein) is your best alternative. If your cows are thin in body condition, then feeding higher levels of a low crude protein, high energy range cube (20 percent crude protein) will provide increased intake of vital nutrients. If winter pasture or cool season variety grasses are available, then the females should not need additional energy or protein supplementation. A source of salt as well as a good commercial calcium:phosphorus mineral mix with added Vitamin A should be available on a free choice basis. 2. Evaluate the growth of your bred heifers. The goal should be to have your bred heifers weigh 85 percent of their mature weight, including the weight of the fetus, prior to calving at 23-25 months of age. Because of this threshold weight, bred heifers should be fed to gain a minimum of one pound per day. 3. Consider controlling internal and external parasites. Treating internal parasites as well as lice infestations are important management decisions.

Fall Calving: 1. Continue the feeding program begun in October. The nutrient requirements for energy, protein, minerals and vitamins of lactating females increase substantially. During the first 3-4 months of lactation, a 1000 pound cow with average milking ability (producing 10 pounds of milk daily) requires 11.5 pounds of energy, 2 November 2010

lbs. of protein, 0.06 pounds of calcium, 0.05 pounds of phosphorus and 36,000 international units of vitamin A per day. Make sure that your females are receiving adequate nutrition so that they will cycle at the first of the breeding season. Feeding 3-4 pounds of a 40 percent CP supplement, 4-6 pounds of a 30 percent CP supplement or 6-8 pounds of a 20 percent CP supplement per head per day should be adequate to meet most protein and energy needs. Choice of appropriate supplement (20 percent CP, 30 percent CP or 40 percent CP) should be based upon cheapest source of protein. Price per pound of protein may be determined by dividing the cost per pound of protein supplement by the percentage of crude protein in the supplement. A source of salt as well as a good commercial calcium:phosphorus mineral mix with added Vitamin A should be available on a free choice basis. If your cows are thin in body condition, then feeding supplemental hay plus higher levels of a low crude protein, high energy range cube (20 percent crude protein) will provide increased intake of vital nutrients. Young, lactating females have 20-25 percent greater supplemental needs than mature cows. 2. Provide supplemental feed for bulls grazing dry, dormant range grass according to age and condition of the bulls: (a) feed mature bulls 3-4 pounds of a 40 percent crude protein range cube daily; (b) feed young bulls 8-10 pounds of a high energy, 20 percent crude protein cattle cube daily, and (c) supplement additional feed as necessary to keep bulls in good body condition as breeding season approaches. 3. If not already completed, conduct breeding soundness exams and fertility checks on all bulls prior to the breeding season. 4. Typically first calving females require 20 to 30 days longer to return to estrus or heat after calving than mature cows. As a result, begin breeding your replacement heifers 20 to 30 days before the rest of the cow herd. This management practice will allow the first-calf heifers additional time to return to estrus so that they can be bred following calving next year with the remainder of the cow herd. 5. Consider controlling internal and external parasites. Treating internal parasites as well as lice infestations are important management decisions.

TEXAS LONGHORN T•R•A•I•L•S

NEWS On the Trail... Texas Longhorns Take A Bite Out of the “Big Apple” TLBAA Teams up with member Tom Markert and Entertainer Larry Gatlin TLBAA member Tom Markert of Triple M Longhorns in Downsville, NY, and his Longhorn cow and calf headed to the “Big Apple” on October 6 to appear on the Fox & Friends Morning Show to help legendary entertainer Larry Gatlin pull a big prank on co-host Gretchen Carlson. Gatlin is known to present gifts to the co-hosts of the show from time to time. But, this gift wasn’t a pair of boots or a coat; this had horns, hide and a calf at side. He needed a Longhorn and his publicist Don Murry Grubbs contacted the TLBAA for direction on how to make it happen. Trying to find a breeder brave enough to drive a cattle trailer and haul a prized Longhorn through the streets of Manhattan might have been quite a struggle. When TLBAA’s Brenda Cantrell contacted Tom and Julie Markert, they were more than pleased to oblige. As the plans began to finally take shape last week, Grubbs contacted Cantrell and asked if a TLBAA certificate could be generated that would make Carlson think she was really going to own a Longhorn. Cantrell created a “play” certificate and sent it off to the show. During the segment, Gatlin read the certificate to Carlson and she was dumbfounded to find out she is responsible for the, “care and wellbeing” of her new Longhorn. Tom got a chance to get in on the action when Gatlin introduced him during the “After the Show” segment. Tom did an excellent job of playing along with the gag and keeping up with Gatlin. November 2010

This type of publicity is great for the breed, TLBAA and its members. We hope you will join us in thanking Tom and Julie for their contribution, Larry Gatlin for his idea of giving Carlson a Longhorn, and the whole crew at Fox for making it all come together. It was great fun! For a copy of the press release and photos go to: http://www.tlbaa.org/headlines/etrails/images/Gatlin.pdf For the video segment go to: http://video.foxnews.com/v/4360118/after-the-show-show-chicken-and-longhorns/?playlist_id=86912

2009 Youth Banquet Hunt Successful for Payne Remember the antelope hunt Toby Johnson donated to the TLBT at the 2009 youth banquet? Rick Wilson and Carla Payne finally made it up to the hunt. “We had a blast visiting with the whole family and hunting,” said Payne. “Toby really found me a nice pronghorn 15 1/2" long. It’s really nice to make new Longhorn friends.”
