From the Chairman of the Board At this writing, West Texas (and most of Texas) has just recorded very beneficial rainfall numbers for the month of July. In our part of the country this produces a wealth of warm season grasses, forbs, and new growth on mixed species browse, creating a very diverse dietary selection for livestock and wildlife alike. Nature, at its most diverse, provides the stability for the long-term success of the ranch. “Natural diversity equals a stable community,” is an equation often sited by West Texas range specialists. This concept can also be applied to the TLBAA as well. Our membership can specialize or participate in many different areas of interest including: lean beef production, recreational cattle, cross breed programs, first calf heifer bulls, selling breeder stock private treaty or at a Texas Longhorn auction sale, raising miniature Texas Longhorns, trophy steers, riding steers, and show stock. Your Association strives to provide information and services to keep all its members, regardless of their area of interest, informed and up-to-date on all the happenings in the industry through the award-winning Trails magazine, weekly online e-Trails and the TLBAA Web site. In addition, we have staff that works year-round on sales, shows and special events to provide our members with a diverse Texas Longhorn experience. Our diversity of interests and areas of service to the membership is a major contributor to our stability as a business and we will continue to serve your needs and interests in the future. Quick checks of some of the events coming up in August are the Autobahn Super Stakes on the first weekend in Fort Worth, the Rocky Mountain Select Texas Longhorn Sale in Colorado Springs, CO, and the Best at West Sale in West, TX, on Saturday, the 7th. Later in the month, Wyoming State Fair in Douglas is on the 20th and Heart of America Longhorn Sale in Marysville, KS, is on the 28th. Just take a glance at the “Save the Date” page in the back of the magazine for many more events that are scheduled throughout the year. The TLBAA Horn Showcase is scheduled for October 14-16 in Fort Worth and this year’s event will include some new features, seminars, and live entertainment. A reminder, the consignment deadline for the Horn Showcase Sale is August 1 and the deadline for the Horn Showcase is September 8. We urge all TLBAA members to come and participate in this fun-filled event. And, if you cannot make it to Fort Worth, we have many satellite measuring stations available throughout the country for those whose schedules won’t allow. For a complete schedule of the Horn Showcase see page 28. In other business, the new GPS registry went “live” for office-staff only, in the middle of July. These past few weeks, the staff has been working to become proficient in its operation. Once they have mastered the GPS system, we will move to the final stage, which is to open the online registry to the membership. Finally, our annual membership drive has been in effect since June. If you have not yet renewed your membership take a moment and do so now. Thank you for your continued support, as you are the lifeblood of our great Association. See you down the Trail,

NEWS On the Trail...
TLBAA Member is TCU Ranch Management Graduate
TLBAA member Chris Schaper of Brenham, TX, graduated in May from the TCU Ranch Management Program. This prestigious livestock-learning program is a part of Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX. Chris is a former TLBT member and has often served as a ring steward at the World Show and a judge at affiliate shows. Although he is knowledgeable about cattle, he knew he needed more knowledge to succeed in the livestock industry. Three of his friends who had attended the program urged Chris to apply. He did go to an interview, but explained that he couldn’t afford it at the time. Shortly after, he received a call that he had qualified for a full scholarship. Chris says that as a result of attending the program he has improved his professional possibilities “exponentially”. This quote and a photo of Chris and a fellow student are highlighted in an advertisement for the school’s scholarship program that ran in TSCRA’s publication, The Cattleman, June 2010. The Ranch Management Program requires an academic year (nine months) to complete, and students are provided intensive classroom instruction in basic management principles. The course of study includes livestock production, natural resource conservation, forage production, accounting principles, marketing, personnel management and general management principles, as well as field work which is coordinated with classroom study to illustrate principles as they are applied in production situations.

TLBAA Board Seats Three Directors During the June 19, 2010 Board of Directors meeting held in Fort Worth, TX, Dora Thompson, and Doug Hunt were seated to the Board of Directors. Dora is serving as an At Large director for Division A. Doug is representing Region 16 in Division C. On June 29, 2010 during a Board of Directors phone conference, Scott Simmons was seated to the Board and is serving Region 3 in Division A. Please welcome these new additions to our Board of Directors.

Meeting a Longhorn For The First Time TLBAA Member Jeri Dean Rimel, Blum, TX, recently got to introduce her 8-monthold grandson, Patrick Austin Lackey, to one of her beloved Texas Longhorn Steers. When Patrick met Pearly’s Dalmation, Jeri said Patrick was not at all afraid and just loved sitting on the steer’s horns!

The 2010 West Coast Texas Longhorn Sale was held on June 19, 2010 at Lone Star Arena in Aurora, Oregon. There were 26 consignors from Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Utah who consigned good quality cattle to the 2010 sale. The event started out with a fun Friday evening with BBQ and a Bluegrass Band that instantly integrated Auctioneer Bill Le’AN! Before the sale on Saturday the Jodelclub Edelwyss from Portland performed true Swiss Jodel, a first for any Texas Longhorn auction! Bill Le’AN from Humansville, MO, and Pedigree Reader Justin Rombeck from Home, KS, did a fantastic job conducting the sale. There were 46 registered bidders and 25 buyers from Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Montana.

Coming up for nominations soon will be all Division B directors, consisting of two (2) At-Large positions and Regions 7-12. Watch for your nomination form being mailed 90 days prior to our Annual Membership Meeting which will be held in Fort Worth, Texas on Jan. 14, 2011. According to the TLBAA By-Laws, Section 2—D: At least ninety (90) days prior to the Annual Membership Meeting, the TLBAA Office shall mail to the Active and Lifetime Members a request for nomination of individual or individuals for Director from the member’s representational region. Such member nominations shall be received in the Association office no later than sixty (60) days prior to the Annual Meeting. In order that any member nominee be eligible to be placed on the election ballot, he must receive write-in nominations from five (5) members who are Active or Lifetime Members. Should there be no members nominated by the membership for a particular Region, or should a nominee decline to have his name placed on the ballot, the Board of Directors will appoint an Active or Lifetime Member in good standing domiciled within the division to fill the vacant position at the same meeting as the election

of TLBAA officers. No less than forty-five (45) days prior to the annual meeting of the membership, the TLBAA Office or designated CPA firm shall mail official printed ballots to each qualified Active and Lifetime Member in good standing of that region or division. This ballot shall contain the names of the candidates, if any, who were properly nominated by members. All written ballots must be returned to the CPA with a postmark not less than twenty-one (21) days prior to the Annual Meeting in order to be validated and counted. All ballots received will be validated and counted by an independent CPA firm or other organization experienced in voting tabulation as designated by the Executive Committee. The nominees receiving the most valid votes shall be elected. All newly elected Directors shall be installed at the Annual Membership Meeting. A tie vote will be broken by the Chairman of the Board drawing one of the names by lot. If a nominee wants a recount of the ballots in their election race, they will have to submit a formal request for a recount to the Board of Directors but not more than sixty (60) days after election results have been announced at the annual meeting. Elections are held annually by division, on rotating basis as selected by the Board of Directors.

NAIS Redux By Henry King
In recent months, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it would abandon its efforts to implement the controversial National Animal Identification System (NAIS). Then on February 5, 2010, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a supposedly kinder, gentler version of NAIS called Animal Disease Traceability (ADT). The USDA listening tour, a 120-million-dollar nationwide effort to sell the old NAIS, determined that while some people favored it, the vast majority were highly critical of the program. Criticisms and concerns focused on confidentiality, liability, cost, privacy and religion. Concerns were voiced that NAIS was the wrong priority for the USDA, that the program only benefited large-scale producers, and that NAIS was unnecessary because existing animal identification systems are sufficient. Some 1200 pages of governmentspeak devoted to the minutia of NAIS were scrapped in favor of a seven-page handout in the form of questions and answers about the new ADT proposal. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack has said that the USDA was going to develop a more flexible animal traceability system in which States and Tribal Nations would establish a means to track animals moving through interstate commerce to their state of origin. As opposed to the previous program, the USDA says the new regulatory framework will tap the expertise of producers to decide what works best.
Views from the ADT Fact Sheet The laudable purpose of ADT is preventing and controlling animal disease to protect animal agriculture, utilizing a flexible system that will determine the location of disease, quickly address it and minimize harm; a system that is more workable, flexible and that makes common sense for all of America’s producers – especially small producers. According to the USDA fact sheet, the intent of the new approach is to: 1) achieve basic, effective animal disease traceability and response to disease outbreaks without overly burdening producers; 2) only apply to animals moving in interstate commerce; 3) be owned, led and administered by the States and Tribal Nations with Federal support focused entirely on animal disease traceability; 4) Allow for maximum flexibility for States, Tribal Nations, and producers to work together to find identification solutions that meet their local needs; 5) encourage the use of lower-cost technology; 6) ensure that animal disease traceability data is owned and maintained at the discretion of the States and Tribal Nations; 7) be less Federally intrusive and support producer’s request to operate on principles of personal accountability; and 8) help overcome some of the mistrust caused by NAIS. The new framework, according to the fact sheet, focuses only on animals that move in interstate commerce. So small producers who raise animals and move them within a State, Tribal Nation, or to local markets, as well as to feed themselves, their families and their neighbors are not part of the framework’s scope and focus. The system will not be mandatory in the sense that all producers are required to participate or that all States and Tribal Nations must implement one approach. What is certain is that animal disease traceability will be required for animals moving in interstate commerce. It will be important for animals moving in interstate commerce to be part of the traceability system. The details of that system have not been determined, but the USDA will maintain a list of official identification devices, which can be updated or expanded. Current examples include branding, metal tags and RFID (radio fre-
quency identification). The new framework will also work with existing USDA disease programs, incorporating the identification requirements for those programs. To ensure interstate compatibility and connectivity, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will work with States and Tribal Nations in establishing standards and guidelines where free or low-cost tags will be incorporated as options. The stated goal of the new approach is to impose the least burden on producers as possible while still achieving effective traceability. In this regard, the USDA will also make the information technology (IT) systems it developed through NAIS available to States and Tribal Nations, should they want to use them. Once States and Tribal Nations decide on acceptable methods of identification, it will be up to the producer to choose the method they want to use if multiple options are available.
Reactions Mixed Supporters of the old NAIS were less than pleased with the new direction, while opponents were cautiously optimistic that ADT would be less burdensome than their perception of NAIS. The American Veterinary Medical Association supported NAIS and feels the new approach weakens response in a disease emergency. Their concern is that if each state is allowed to develop and implement its own program, important questions arise concerning communication and coordination. They feel that the USDA must create a system that allows for quick and accurate trace-back across state borders in an animal disease emergency, or there is no point in the new system, and that there are many unanswered questions that must be addressed. Nebraska director of agriculture Greg Ibach expressed concerns with the new plan, under which states would be responsible for managing—and funding— traceability programs. “Nebraska,” he

said, “…could be very impacted, and in a time when budget resources are at high demand, we’re concerned that a program could be implemented that would cost our state, and our state’s producers, a significant amount of money.” Nebraska U.S. Senator and former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns voiced sharp criticism of the proposed plan. “The so-called new animal ID is simply a mandatory system, from what I can tell,” Johanns says, “although it’s being promoted as a voluntary one.” USDA says the program will not be mandatory, except for animals moved in interstate commerce, but Johanns says that provision means the program is mandatory, because so much of livestock now moves across the country. And Johanns says the states are rightfully concerned about having the new program, which he says is not going to be supported in the country. The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) supports the program, with a few caveats, including: costs must be minimized; cattle ID information should be kept confidential; the system must operate at the speed of commerce; producers must be protected from liability after cattle have left their control; and that the system doesn’t replace or impede existing TSCRA brand inspection activities. Fifty-four of the 55 Missourians who testified during the USDA’s listening session in Jefferson City last year went on record opposed to NAIS. The decision to scrap the program is a direct result of grassroots opposition by producers and concerned consumers. Missouri producers felt that NAIS was created by industrial livestock and meatpacking interests to shift the burden of animal disease and food safety onto the backs of family farmers. R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard, a frequent critic of NAIS, had some rare good words about the new USDA approach, calling it a fundamental shift from the direction that USDA has been going for the last four years. He applauded the fact that much of the control will be vested in the states, and that producers will have input in developing the new program. R-CALF supporters have staunchly said they were not willing to allow the USDA to require a federal registry of livestock, to require producers to report to the federal government when livestock were moved, and to have a federal registry of every farm and ranch. Bullard was also pleased that action is being taken to strengthen import controls to prevent the introduction of diseases from foreign sources, a key element that R-CALF has been pushing.

USDA had asked for $14.2 million for the program. “We do not feel it is a good use of resources to fund NAIS until the agency develops a clear plan for a mandatory system with measurable goals, long-term funding levels, and a plan for successful implementation,” she added. Despite the aggravated tone of Congresswoman DeLauro’s pronouncement, it is not because she is opposed to spending the money, but because her constituents and lobbyists want the program to be mandatory. This is probably just a

Meanwhile, Back at the Congress … On July 1, 2010, the House Appropriations subcommittee that funds USDA and FDA programs announced a fiscal 2011 funding bill that would stop funding the new iteration of USDA’s voluntary National Animal Identification System (NAIS). “We have spent over $147 million on this program since 2004. And six years later, we still have not seen a clear plan from USDA on successful implementation, even after they shifted to a more
show-biz hiccup, and no real danger to eventual funding. Her supporters among the major agricultural firms are exempt from most of the costly details of beef production and can amortize the remaining cost over many animals. Small farmers must tag and track every animal, a cost that some say can run as high as $175 on a beef. That additional expense puts the small farmer at a disadvantage, which could drive many of them out of business and further concentrate beef production to fewer and larger corporate entities. Not to worry, though …at a midMarch news conference at the National Farmers Union Convention, Agriculture Secretary Vilsack had said he believes USDA will be able to get congressional support for the new traceability system, “We’ll provide the resources. I think we can convince Congress of the resources. The reality is Congress had lost a lot of confidence in the former system (NAIS).” The name has changed and a more user-friendly sales approach is in place, but the beneficiaries and the burden-bearers remain the same. Corporate agribusiness and international meat sales will benefit with streamlined traceability, but a disproportionate per-animal cost for the program will still rest on family farmers and small herd owners.

The 2010 TLBAA Longhorn Expo was a spectacular Longhorn experience that will raise the bar for any future World Show and TLBT National Youth Show. The four-day event was packed full of activities, competition, socializing, awards, and most of all Longhorns!
Day 1- Wednesday, June 16 Move in day started early, as exhibitors and vendors prepared for the upcoming shows. It was hotter than hot and everyone was very pleased to be able to cool down during the Annual Barn Party. Special thanks to the North Texas Longhorn Association for sponsoring the Barn Party and providing delicious BBQ.
Day 2 – Thursday, June 17 The TLBT National Youth Show began with the ring procession and the singing of the “National Anthem” by Jayme Templin. The Pee Wee competition followed and as always, cameras were flashing as the little ones were escorted into the ring. The Youth Show judge this year, Doug Pierce, took special time with each individual exhibitor. He gave high praise to the quality of showmanship that the Youth possess and to the TLBAA for supporting them. Youth Show Chairs, Kevin Rooker and Trigg and Traci Moore deserve high praise for the great event that they organized.
Day 3 – Friday, June 18 The Free Division was the headliner for the day. Show Chairs Steve & Bodie Quary and Donnie Taylor along with the Ring Stewards David Vizza and Steve Quary kept Judge Joel Lemley busy looking at the high quality Longhorns that came into the ring. The Youth were kept busy throughout the day with various competitions: Gold Merit, Quiz Bowl and Livestock Judging. The first Select Senior Marketing Sale was conducted during the afternoon. Brent Bolen introduced the four seniors that were given the opportunity to market their consignments: Becca Vizza, Kyle Tanner, Lindsey Rooker and Kevin Rubel did an outstanding job in the sale ring. The bids were high for each animal, as Joel Lemley auctioneered. Following the Select Senior Marketing Sale, Dr. Bob Kropp and Lana Hightower officiated the Flag Presentation and the Breeder Memorial. Julie Pack sang the “National Anthem”. The memorial list consisted of Breeders that had died from June 2009-June 2010. TLBT member Matthew Wilson played taps on his trumpet after the list of the names were completed, while the spotlight shined on the rider-less horse led by Bodie Quary stood still in the center of the ring. Presenting the flags on horseback were Jeff Hand and Tommy Miller. The lights came back on and the Trophy Steers had center stage. Always a crowd pleaser, the Trophy Steer Show delighted all those attending. There was quite a bit of excitement as the Trophy Steer Judges maneuvered around the ring on horseback. The judges were Dale Hunt, Tammy Tiner and David Vizza. Following the Trophy Steer Show was the TLBT Awards Banquet. The theme for the banquet this year was, “Fabulous Las Vegas Style” and was graciously sponsored by the Autobahn Motorcar Group. The banquet hosted 325 in attendance and the applause was continuous as awards were presented. While the various awards were being passed out, many of the Youth were pre-

sented with scholarships to help further their education. Dr. Zech Dameron III presented the Mosser Scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each to: Kaytlyn Brown, Andrea Beare, Ashley Demko, Megan Ekstrom, Allie Galloway, Sarah Galloway, Kathryn Head, Andrea Martinez, Michael Moore, Hannah Murphy, Julie Pack, Lindsey Rooker, Taylor Sherwood, Lauren Shipper, Kyle Tanner, Rebecca Vizza, David Vizza, and James Edward Kelly. We offer many thanks to the outstanding contributors that gave so generously to the Mosser Scholarship Fund and to the members of the committee for their leadership. 2010 World Show Chair Lana Hightower presented the TLBAA Senior Gratuity Scholarships during the banquet to: Kaytlyn Brown, Kyle Tanner, Kevin Rubel, Justin Gripon, Lindsey Rooker, Taylor Sherwood and Jaye Wells. Congratulations to all of the TLBT youth that received scholarships; we wish each of you the very best in your educational pursuits. A special thanks to Carole Phillips and Patti Vizza for providing a special evening for all to enjoy - the banquet was wonderful.
Day 4 – Saturday, June 19 The Haltered Show was the focus of the day. Show chairs John Oliver and Cindy Dennis organized a smooth running show. Judge Stan Comer did a great job and educated the crowd and exhibitors with his years of experience. A shorter day than the previous, but full of competition and award winning Longhorns.
OTHER NOTEWORTHY EVENTS DURING THE SHOW Over the course of the year the Youth raised $5,500 to benefit the Susan G Komen Foundation in their efforts to cure breast cancer. A large check was created and presented. Congratulations for all your fundraising efforts. The Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of New Mexico sponsored a heifer donated by Mike and Frances Hernandez to benefit the Dunsworth Family after their recent tornado crisis. The heifer was auctioned off and re-donated several times with a final total of $5,200 being raised to assist the formerPresident of the TLBT and her family. Thank you to everyone that generously donated. During the Awards Banquet, the 2011 World Show Chairman Trigg Moore honored outgoing 2010 World Show Chairman Lana Hightower. Moore thanked Lana for all her dedication and for the success of the shows. Lana was given a standing ovation by the gratful crowd. Kim Hudson and her crew did a marvelous job organizing the live and silent auction. The auctions were extremely successful, bringing in over $8,000. This year more than $25,000 in sponsorships were collected, making the World Show possible. On the last day of the World Show, the winning ticket was drawn and Dr. William and Michelle Smith of Woodson School Ranch in Marshall, MO, were announced as the winners. The TLBT did a tremendous job selling the tickets, as did many of the TLBAA Affiliates. TLBT youth member Jonah Faske sold an amazing 631 tickets, which are the most tickets sold by a TLBT member. Jonah will be receiving a calf that is being donated by Steve and Bodie Quary of Diamond Q Longhorns, Prague, OK. The TLBAA Affiliate that sold the most raffle tickets was the Oklahoma Texas Longhorn Association. Thank you Jonah and OTLA for your efforts! Update From Longhorn Breeder in France Oriane and Stephane Clauzel, TLBAA Members from France have recently sent us an update and some photos of their herd that they are raising. Oriane and Stephane visited the TLBAA offices in January during the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. They are very interested in increasing the size of the herd and are hopeful that soon they will be able to import semen and embyos from the US The TLBAA is working to assist them in this endeavor. Risks for Heat Stress by Heather Smith Thomas Many factors come into play to determine whether or not cattle will be at risk for heat stroke and death loss. Don Spiers, Associate Professor of Animal Science (U. of Missouri, Columbia) says, “The comfort zone of cattle has an upper limit of about 75 degrees F. but this varies, depending on how large the animal is and whether it’s dark or light color. A dark skinned animal has more risk for heat stress. Studies have shown that 70 percent of feedlot deaths due to intense hot weather is in animals with dark hide. Research has found that animals with black hide get a higher body temperature. Cattle with lots of muscle also generate more heat. The bulky muscles have more heat to get rid of.” Body temperature above 107 degrees is dangerous. “Cattle may have heart failure. Once it gets that high, you’re dealing with major heat stress; animals may have circulatory collapse and go into heat stroke if they can’t get enough water to maintain blood pressure. The vascular system collapses and the heart stops.” “If air temperature does not drop below 80 degrees F. at night, you’ve got a huge problem, especially if this continues for a period of days. A couple summers ago we didn’t have much heat stress here because even though we had high daytime heat, we had nighttime temperatures dropping below 75 almost every night. If ambient air temperature drops below 75, the animals have a window for heat loss and they can often recover. If it stays in the upper 70’s or higher, they start to accumulate heat,” explains Spiers. “We’ve found as we monitor temperatures, here in the Midwest, that if a heat wave lasts 3 days or more, you’ve got a big problem. The cattle accumulate heat—the first day just a little, the next day a little more, and the critical time is about the third day. That’s when animals start dying. We’re not talking about production problems and not eating, but actual deaths,” he says. In 1999 in Nebraska, for instance, thousands of feedlot cattle died due to lack of nighttime cooling, in combination with high humidity. They could not get rid of heat accumulation; their core temperatures had risen too high. “If you can create a break in the heat before you get to that 3 day point— which seems to be the time it takes to develop a lethal heat load—you can prevent losses. You need to come up with ways to break that cycle (with sprinklers, shade, fans, etc.) if it doesn’t break naturally,” says Spiers. “If cattle are outdoors you can hope for clear nights with no clouds, to get some radiant heat loss. The sky is a heat sink, if you

Ranch in Mountain Home, TX. “Upon the entrance to the Y.O. Ranch we definitely felt that ‘wow’ factor and it continued to build as we drove along the seven mile road to the camp site,” said Barfield. As they walked through the doors of the recreational room, they found (amongst the wildlife displays) TLBT officers and directors in action. The newly elected TLBT officers were lead in practice meetings by veteran Parliamentarian Glen Clinnard and the dedicated Youth advisors that were in attendance. Along with work came play and the camp provided many activities for them to enjoy, such as swimming, hiking and wildlife tours of the ranch. Barfield noted, “Murph was kind enough to point out some of the promising young bulls in the making on the Y.O.” The camp attendees took a Safari bus tour to view the protected wildlife on the ranch. Their tour guide was Debbie Hagebusch and her expertise on the animals that are being cared for on the ranch was an educational experience that everyone enjoyed. “Pam and I would like to thank the Y.O. Ranch for the warm hospitality that they showed us and for allowing us to experience the richness of the land, cattle and wildlife during the camp,” Barfield expressed. “Our thanks also go to Glen Clinnard, the youth advisors and especially the 2010-2011 TLBT Directors and Officers for inviting us. This is one trip I will never forget!”

When and how did you become involved with the TLBT? I became involved when my family bought a steer from a school auction in 2003. What is your favorite part of showing Longhorns? My favorite part of showing Texas Longhorns is making so many friends. What is the best advice about showing Longhorns you have received and from whom? The best advice given to me was from Judge Doug Pierce. He said, "Don't try too hard and make sure you have fun." What do you enjoy doing when you are not showing Longhorns? I enjoy playing football and baseball when I'm not showing Longhorns.
As the 2009-2010 Show Season comes to an end, we are celebrating another successful year as one of the most active youth organizations there is in the cattle industry. Thank you to everyone who made the 2010 World Show a great success. Congratulations to all the class winners, Gold Merit, Quiz Bowl, Judging, Hall of Fame and Showmanship winners. Everyone did a great job and you are all winners in my book. The TLBT page in the Trails will have a new look this year. We’d like to place more of an emphasis on the youth and some of the Longhorn events that are taking place in the lives of TLBT members. This year our theme will be, “Stars and Stripes and Old Country Nights.” If you have anything you’d like to share, please send it my way along with a good quality photo and short description, and I will do my best to get it in an upcoming Trails edition. In line with this year’s theme, we will be honoring our military troops. We will be selecting a service project that benefits the men and women who serve our country. We will also be featuring a few Longhorn breeders who have dedicated themselves to protecting our country. Your newly elected TLBT officers attended Leadership Camp at the historical YO Ranch in Mountain Home, Texas. TLBAA Board of Directors Approve AI Rule Changes and Price Reduction
During the June 19, 2010 Board of Directors meeting in Fort Worth, TX, the TLBAA Board of Directors approved rule changes in the TLBAA Official Handbook under Section 7, Artificial Insemination Item C, Number 1. The changes are: 1). The approval of certification of a bull as a TLBAA AI Certified Sire will require only the General Manger’s approval and no longer needs to be presented to the entire Board of Directors and 2). The requirement of including a
photo of the bull with the application will now be required. The Board of Directors also approved a reduction in the fee for AI Sire Certification from $250 to $100. The fee goes into effect immediately. All other requirements for AI Sire Certification still apply. Please contact the TLBAA Registration department to request information on AI Sire Certification.

NEW DAM OF EXCELLENCE WT Miss Mona’s Liberator Joining the distinguished Dam of Excellence list this month is WT Miss Mona’s Liberator (Country Liberator x Day’s Miss Mona). Miss Mona’s owners are Allen and Suzanne Perry, Evant, TX. Mona was bred and raised by Lew Meibergen, Enid, OK. Allen and Suzanne purchased Miss Mona from Rick Adams and Bill Plaisance from Cedar Creek Cattle Company in 2003. She gave birth to her first calf (heifer) in 2000 and has established herself as a top producer every year since. According to Suzanne, “Miss Mona is always the first cow to come up to you and want her head scratched and she passes her sweet nature on to all of her calves. Visitors at the ranch always like to have their pictures taken while petting Miss Mona.” Some of Mona’s best known offspring include: CC Miss Shadow (a daughter of The Shadow); PLR Lone Star Warrior, a son of CC Blue Warrior and herd sire for Thunder Ranch Longhorns, PLR Phenomenal Monique (a daughter of Phenomenon); and her 2009 daughter, PLR Mona’s Smokin’ Mischief, sired by BH Mr. Smokey, a son of Dark Star Chex. “All of the momma cows in your herd are special, but every now and then you find one that just grabs your heart and won’t let go. They are tops in every way. I fell in love with Mona the first day I saw her and she will always be one of the head cows at our ranch,” said Suzanne. have clear nights. But if it’s cloudy the heat sink is blocked and the cattle can’t get rid of the heat,” he says. “Here in Missouri the hottest time is early July through mid August. We encourage people to watch weather forecasts. We also use temperature/humidy indexes. The combination of air temperature and humidity is important. You can look at the index and determine what the combination is— whether it puts you into the alert stage, danger stage or emergency stage. Even if temperature is only in the upper 70’s, if you have high humidity (70 percent or above), you may be in the alert stage, and if temperature gets up to 80 it’s much worse. Once you get into the danger or emergency stage, you must do something quickly to save your animals,” he says. Shade, water, and air movement are important for reducing heat stress, to keep body August 2010
temperature within the safe zone. Sprinklers, chilled drinking water and fans are methods that have been used with dairies, and some feedlots are utilizing these also. Research in Nebraska with feedlot cattle is looking at ways to promote more wind movement to cool the animals, without creating dust. Convective cooling (movement of air over the animals, taking the heat away) works best if there is a breeze, and air movement between animals. Spiers says most recommendations for avoiding heat stress include minimizing overcrowding, to make sure the animals are not bunched together. “If there are only a few water troughs and the animals are crowded around them trying to get to the water, they reduce any beneficial effects of a breeze.” “Keep animals spaced out as much as possible to allow air movement. Cut down brush and remove windbreaks around summer pens; you want all the air movement you can get. Windbreaks or brush should be removed
for at least 150 feet back from the sides of a pen to allow breezes to go through and cool the animals. They usually need about a 3 to 5 mile per hour wind to effectively cool them, to remove the heat and water they are evaporating,” he says. “The critical thing is how much the air temperature drops at night. We’ve been looking at ways to cool cattle at different times of day to find what works best, and found that nighttime cooling is actually better than daytime cooling, if you have a choice. There are some times during summer that it gets so hot you must cool them continually, but in spring and fall it’s better to turn on fans when air temperature drops to a cooler level. If you are talking about ambient temperatures, what’s really critical is the nighttime temperature,” explains Spiers.

Various topics were discussed including shows, sales, advertising, promotional items and the Growing Forward Fund. There were also elections for two new directors that were up for renewal this year. The 2010 Directors elected for the Alberta Texas Longhorn Association are: Mark Stewart, President; Ron Walker, Vice President; Del Hepfner, Secretary/Treasurer; Ken Beler, and Gordon Musgrove. The Robert Owen Memorial Award for 2009 was awarded to Ken & Charlotte Beler for their dedication to the Texas Longhorn cattle and to the Association for the past 20 years. The 3rd Registered Select Sale was also held on March 26 in Ponoka. There were 20-head of yearling heifers, bulls and mature cows offered in the sale. There was a good crowd in attendance again this year. Ron Walker and Cliff Begg were the volume buyers. Mark and Tina Stewart donated pheasants to be auctioned during the sale, with proceeds going to the Association. Thank you to everyone who helped to contribute to the $500 that was raised. The Texas Longhorn Show was held in Red Deer in Alberta on July 24. Highlights form the show will be included in our next Affiliate News update. The Alberta Texas Longhorn Association once again attended the Calgary Stampede from July 9-18th. We had an information booth and a cattle display during the Stampede.

Dr. Lou Shields, President The TLBGCA affiliate held its annual meeting and ranch tour July 12 at the spectacular TX W Ranch owned by George and Peggy Wilhite of Navasota, TX. Over 80 members and guests enjoyed educational programs, the affiliate business meeting, a delicious lunch and fabulous fellowship. Shane Bellow representing Trans Ova Genetics provided information about their beef cattle reproduction services and options. Following Shane, Robert Schnuriger provided an insight to herd health management and nutritional needs specific for Texas Longhorn Cattle. The business meeting was honored to have Robert Richey, TLBAA Chairman of the Board give remarks for the TLBAA. Robert acknowledged the progress made by TLBAA to hire Jamie Griffeth as the new TLBAA General Manager. He also praised the organization’s positive movement toward a solid financial status. Larry Smith was recognized for his outstanding contributions to TLBGCA as the outgoing President. Glenn Smith was also praised for her dedication and determination to make the affiliate a success. Cindy Schnuriger announced the opening of the Butler Longhorn museum located in League City, TX. The officer and board election were conducted. The new officer team elected includes: Dr. W. Lou Shields, President; Rick Friedrich, 1st Vice President; Larry Smith, 2nd Vice President; Benny Hruzek, Treasurer and Russell Deshotels, Secretary. The Board of Directors welcomes both returning and new members. They are Mitchell Dale, Dorie Damuth, Dean Freeman, Stephen Head, Tensel Leach, Doak Parker, Robert Schnuriger, Glen Smith, Doug Stotts, George Wilhite, Marion Woolie and Susan Young. Kristi Wilson and Michelle Stearns presented the youth exhibitors with awards and t-shirts donated by Santa Terecita Ranch. Thirty TLBNM panels were auctioned after the banquet, starting with Ron Gentry’s written bid and ending with the high bid from a vendor, Albert Lyon. World Show Committee Approves Changes to TLBAA Show Judge and Fitter Rules The 2011 World Show Committee recently elected to update and revise the rules for Judges. The rules below have been approved by the committee and the Board of Directors and will take effect immediately. If you have any questions, please contact World Show Chair, Trigg Moore. 1. Affects Breeder/Fitter Judges: If a Judge judges an Open Division, Haltered or Non-Haltered Show they forefeit all Hall of Fame Points on their animals for that show season. 2. No person shall be allowed to Judge any cattle they have shown or fitted during the current show season. 3. No person shall Judge cattle carrying their own brand. 4. The World Show Committee has the authority to suspend or remove any Judge from the approved Judges List until further notice for unethical conduct or a rule violation. These rules can be found in the TLBAA Handbook in the section of general rules and regulations under judges. August 2010
