About the Cover: This beautiful sight often greets Bill and Judy Meridith when they return to their home in Wellington, KS. Outback Beauty, measuring 78-5/8” TTT and 94-3/8” TH, is one of their favorite females at Tallgrass Cattle Co. The Meridiths purchased their first Texas Longhorn cattle in the 1980s. In June 1992, they purchased Bet Twice at the Troy Kinder dispersal included in an Eddie Wood Cowtown Sale. Bet Twice was the bull that put their breeding program in high gear. Among the additions to the Merdiths’ herd have been all the high selling lots at the celebrated Legacy Sales: Outspoken (2005); Outback Beauty (2006); Sabrina (2007); Candy Cane (2008); and Outback Cherry (2009). Their herd sire now is TG Flash, a Boomerang son that measures 71-1/4”. “We like the Longhorns because they’re smarter than other breeds, and ours are all gentle,” says Bill Meridith. From the Chairman of the Board Dear Members: As the year 2009 comes to a close, I’m amazed at how quickly it went by. When I accepted the position as Chairman of the Board last January, I was humbled by the appointment. Almost a year later, I’m proud of our Board of Directors and the direction that they have taken the TLBAA over the course of this year. We began the year with a financial challenge. We have met the challenge and now find ourselves on solid ground. We accomplished this by making difficult, yet sound, financial decisions that included: reduction of staff, reduction of staff benefits, reducMaurice Ladnier tion of paper weight for the Trails, reduction of monthly office rent, selling one staff vehicle and completing the lease on another, holding special events accountable to be “self-funded” as they were meant to be, reducing the amount of editorial in the Trails so that it met a 60 percent advertising and 40 percent editorial ratio, and many other cost effective practices. We did all of this and continued to provide the services that as a member you expect from your Association. As we cut our operating cost, we were able to offer some incentives to members at reduced rates: Lifetime memberships reduced for a short period to $750, decreased advertising rates in the Trails by 30 percent, decreased Horn Showcase Sponsorship rates and voted to reduce registration fees that will become effective next month. We found new ways to increase revenue: held a successful “Donation Sale” during the May Best At West Sale that raised $20,995 for the Association and began to sell the front cover of the Trails Magazine. We also moved the Association forward by producing and completing a Membership Survey, passed the TLBAA Code of Business Conduct & Ethics Policy for Employees and Directors, approved the upgrade of the computer systems database for Registrations and Membership, have agreed to search and hire a General Manager, and are moving forward with the approval of the membership to sale the land in the Stockyards. Because of these accomplishments, I feel confident that the year 2010 will be a great one for the TLBAA. I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I hope to see you in Fort Worth at the General Membership Meeting.

SPECIAL AWARDS GIVEN BY TLBAA Elmer Parker Lifetime Award Lifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its Breeders Elmer Parker was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century. The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with a lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors. The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award Perpetuation and Promotion of the Texas Longhorn Breed A native Texan, Dave Evans entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch. Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountains & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years. From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger JR in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a signal honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder. Dave Evans Breeder of the Year: Dave Evans was an enthusiastic breeder of Texas Longhorns, who served the TLBAA in many capacities. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. In his honor, this award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of the Texas Longhorn through their breeding program. All members of the TLBAA are encouraged to send nominations. Nominations should be in written format with reasons on how/why the individual nominated fulfills the criteria of the award. All nominees are to be active TLBAA members, in good standing. Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award: Elmer Parker was a livestock handler and technician at the Wichita Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma for many years and he played an important part in the history of the Longhorn breed. In recognition for Parker’s diligent contribution of sharing his knowledge over a period of several years, and for his concern for accuracy and sincerity in the breeding of Texas Longhorns, this award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for. - All members of the TLBAA are encouraged to send nominations. Nominations should be in written format with reasons on how/why the individual nominated fulfills the criteria of the award. All nominees are to be active TLBAA members, in good standing.

Affiliate Presidents Meeting will be held on January 15, beginning at 8 am at the Radisson Hotel Fossil Creek. Show Committee Meeting will be held at 10 am on January 19 at the Will Rogers Complex in either Barn 1 or 2 upstairs.

The Second Annual Ray Moore Memorial Sale was held in Ada, OK on October 24, 2009. This year, as with last, there were new breeders purchasing cattle. There were many local buyers as well as buyers from surrounding states and as far away as New York State. Two buckles were awarded. Luke Rutledge was awarded a buckle for the outstanding cow, which was from Moore breeding. Luke’s Champion Cow was Rutledge’s Miss Kitty whose bloodline goes back to Moore’s bull, I’m A Hot Shot Too. Marquess Arrow Ranch was awarded the buckle for the outstanding cow, which was not from Moore breeding. The Marquess’s Champion Cow was C9 Amazing Grace. Volume buyer was Dr. L.V. Baker of Elk City, OK. The high selling cow was Toro’s Hot Thing, a 585 Overwhelming Toro daughter, owned by Cody and Missy Moore and purchased by Dr. L.V. Baker.

Four Generations of TLBAA Members

When the late Ray Moore and his wife, Bernice, bought their first Texas Longhorn in 1969, they could never have foreseen that 40 years later, there would be four generations of their family with TLBAA memberships and cattle registered in their names. Ray and Bernice joined the TLBAA in 1970, and received the leather lifetime award presented at that time. Together, they participated and supported all phases of the Longhorn industry during the following years. Following Ray’s death, Bernice continues to operate Moore Longhorn Ranch at Roff, OK, with grandson Cody Moore as manager. The Moores’ son, Joe, became a TLBAA member on July 25, 1984. Today he and his wife Nancy operate their own ranch in Bucklin, KS. They maintain a good-sized herd as well as offering authentic working ranch experiences such as the spring and fall cattle drives. Their sons Cody and Laramie help out when needed. Grandson Cody Moore continued the Moore tradition and joined the TLBAA on July 17, 2004. He is the manager of Moore Longhorn Ranch for Bernice, and in addition, he and wife Missy stay busy working their own cattle. Granddaughter Shanna Collins and her husband T.J. started their own Heart Ache Cattle Co. on July 17, 2004 in Kingsville, TX. The daughter of Denise and the late Mel Raley, she has worked with Longhorn cattle all her life. The fourth generation to continue the lifestyle started by Ray and Bernice is one-yearold Jaycee Collins. Bernice’s great granddaughter became a member on July 10, 2009, when “grandma” registered a heifer in her name. With this rich heritage of Texas Longhorn cattle and the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America, look for Jaycee to become a valued breeder and member in the coming years. * Editor’s Note: We believe this is the first four generation family in the TLBAA, but if you know of another, please let us know.

Wear Pink at the Fort Worth Youth Show

As one the of their services projects, the TLBT is raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to fight Breast Cancer. In the spirit of this effort, the TLBT is encouraging everyone that attends the Youth Show at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo on January 18 to wear pink. They are accepting pledges from individuals that would like to sponsor a Youth participant to wear pink in the ring during the show. J.R. Seman, one of the first Gunman sons, passed away the weekend of July 12, 2009 from unknown causes in Central Texas. He was twelve and half years old. Larry and Robyn Lonero of the Bar L Cattle Company in Brenham, TX and Agee and Karen Spidle of Belleville, TX coowned J.R. Seman. J.R. Seman was raised by Ron and Jo Jones of Salida, CO and was purchased by Larry Lonero in 1999 at the Midwest Sale in Winfield, KS for $13,000, a high price at that time in the Texas Longhorn Breed. J.R. Seman was the first Gunman son sold at public auction and was one of the first “superhorned” bulls in the breed. “J.R. Seman put our breeding program on the map,” remembers Larry Lonero. “His horn growth at that time was almost unheard of and he really got the attention of the Texas Longhorn Breed. His horn measurements were record setting at that time. He was just a hint of what the Gunman genetics were getting ready to do for our breed.” J.R. Seman measured just shy of 70” TTT and over 95” TH at the time of his death. J.R. Seman’s significance became greater just a year later when Gunman died prematurely from pneumonia at the Jones Ranch in Colorado. By then, other big horned Gunman sons and grandsons such as Salida Slick, Evader, J.R. Grand Slam (J.R. Seman’s full brother) and J.P. Rio Grande had been purchased from the Jones’ and were beginning to change the way horn production was measured in the Texas Longhorn Breed. In all, breeders have used several dozen Gunman sons and grandsons all across the country. “I still think that Gunman significantly changed our breed from a horn standpoint. Certainly the great bulls of today are moving our breed forward in that regard but you think about the influence that one bull, Gunman, had in such a short period of time and I think he is in the category of Senator and Phenomenon and maybe Hunt’s Command Respect today as to his influence on the breed. And I think that J.R. Seman was instrumental in proving the Gunman genetics,” offered Larry. J.R. Seman was owned and used exclusively at the Bar L Cattle Company until about 5 years ago when half interest was sold to Agee and Karen Spidle. Possession of J.R. Seman was split allowing a more cows to be bred to him. “When I decided to sell half interest, my main motivation was to have him exposed to as many cows as possible so that he would leave a lasting legacy in this breed. I thought this caliber of Herd Sire deserved that. Karen and Agee have been great partners and they have helped cement J.R. Seman’s legacy,” said Larry. Eddie Wood was the auctioneer at the 1999 Midwest Sale when J.R. Seman was purchased from the Jones’. Larry recalls, “I still remember Eddie’s excitement that day when they walked J.R. Seman into the ring. The bidding was fast and furious and there were a lot of people there that day to see the bull. Every time I saw Eddie -- continued on pg. 74

after that sale he would ask about, “that ’ol big horned Seman bull of yours.” J.R. Seman won many accolades and awards through the years, most recently being used as the cover photo for the book BEEF published by HarperCollins. The book is in its second printing and went to International printing this summer. “As much money as we made off of this bull and as much attention as he has gotten I think the thing that influences me the most is the fact that he was always such a gentleman. He was easy to handle, always calm, always gentle. He was a great ambassador of our breed,” says Lonero. “He’s left a legacy of 60” and 70” horned offspring to be sure and I’m glad that he will be remembered for that. But I’ll just always remember his presence and confidence and gentleness in the pasture. He was a great bull. It was a privilege to own him.”

Water Needs of Cattle in Cold Weather By Heather Smith Thomas During cold weather, ranchers need to pay attention to water sources to make sure they don’t freeze. If cattle don’t drink enough, they won’t eat enough, and lose weight. In some instances they may become dehydrated and impacted. If contents of one of the smaller stomachs become dry and impacted, feed won’t move through. The tract is thus blocked and unless this situation is relieved, the cow will die. Signs that cattle aren’t drinking enough include loss of appetite, weight loss, and lack of gut fill. Manure will be scanty and very firm. A moderate size pregnant cow needs about 6 gallons of water daily in cool weather, and twice that much after she calves and is producing milk. Temperature of drinking water should be at least 40 degrees or higher, if possible. If water is colder, cows may not drink enough. Cold water that’s close to freezing may cause temporary paralysis of the digestive tract and the cow will stop eating for awhile, even though she needs a high energy intake to maintain body temperature and heat the cold water in the gut. Sometimes money spent on a water tank heater for cattle in cold weather can save a lot of dollars on feed and health costs. Snow can be used as a water source under certain conditions, if

your region gets adequate winter snowfall and the snow stays powdery and not crusted. Cattle must be able to sweep it up with their tongues. People used to think that cows eating snow in cold weather require more feed energy to warm it to body temperature, but research trials—with some cattle eating snow and some drinking water—showed no difference in feed intake or weight gains. The cattle using snow for moisture just ate slower. They’d eat awhile then lick snow, eat some more, and lick snow. They consume small amounts of snow all through the day, whereas animals using water will drink just once or twice a day in cold weather. The intermittent eating and snow consumption seems to minimize thermal stress. Heat created by digestion is enough to warm the melted snow to body temperature. It was also thought that cows deprived of adequate water and having to eat snow would be at risk for impaction, but this isn’t true. As long as cows are able to eat snow, they have enough moisture for proper gut function. Impaction occurs mainly when cows do not have enough water or snow, or when they must utilize coarse, dry forage with low protein levels—not enough protein to nourish the microbes that ferment and digest the roughage. Then the feed moves through the tract too slowly, the cow eats less total feed,

and she may become impacted. Eating snow is a learned behavior, however. Cattle learn by watching other cows eat snow. Those with no role models may go thirsty awhile before trying it. If snow is readily available and cattle learn to use it, they can do very well on winter pastures without water, as long as the snow is adequate but not so deep that it covers the forage. For 43 years we’ve used a 320-acre mountain pasture on our ranch, letting cows graze it in the fall after we bring them home from the range and wean their calves. They are usually able to stay there until November or late December—whenever the snow gets too deep for grazing. We installed several water troughs to collect spring water. These work nicely unless weather gets severely cold and troughs freeze over. In cold weather we’d hike up there every day to break the ice. The cows would follow us to the troughs and gang around to drink after we chopped out the ice. But we noticed that some cows never seemed interested in coming to water. We’d see them licking snow and worried that they were not getting enough water. After seeing them do this for several weeks, we realize those particular cows were staying in good body condition, and were not suffering from water shortage. They had learned how to eat snow and seemed to prefer periodic snow-licking, rather than tanking up on ice-cold water in the cold weather.

If cattle don’t drink enough, they won’t eat enough, and lose weight.

What is Johne’s disease and what kind of animals get Johne’s disease? Johne’s (pronounced “Yo-nees”) disease is a contagious bacterial disease of the intestinal tract. A German veterinarian, Heinrich Johne, first described the disease in a dairy cow in 1895; his name is used as the common name for the disease. The disease is also called paratuberculosis. Johne’s disease occurs in a wide variety of animals, but most often in ruminants. Ruminants are hoofed mammals that chew their cud and have a 3-4 chambered stomach. Some of the more common ruminants are: cattle, sheep, goats, deer, antelope, and bison. Johne’s disease has been reported in all of these animals but is most commonly seen in dairy cattle.

What causes Johne’s disease? The bacterium that causes Johne’s disease is named Mycobacterium paratuberculosis often the name is abbreviated M. paratuberculosis. M. paratuberculosis is a relative of the bacterium that causes tuberculosis in humans (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), cattle (Mycobacterium bovis), and birds (Mycobacterium avium) - Some taxonomists favor the name Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis for the organism that causes Johne’s disease, since genetically it is closely related to M. avium. M. paratuberculosis can replicate only when it is in animals: it cannot multiply in nature, outside the animal. However, if soil or water is contaminated with this bacterium, it can survive there for over a year because of its resistance to heat, cold and drying.

What are the signs of Johne’s disease? Primarily, there are only two signs of M. paratuberculosis infection: diarrhea and rapid weight loss. In some animal species, like sheep and goats, diarrhea is less common. In general, animals with Johne’s disease “waste away” despite their continuing to eat well. Infected animals maintain a normal temperature but may appear unthrifty and can become weak in later stages of the infection. Because of the slowly progressive nature of the infection, signs of Johne’s disease are usually not seen until animals are adults. Since the signs of Johne’s disease can be confused with the signs of several other diseases, a diagnosis can be confirmed only by use of laboratory tests.

How common is Johne’s disease? Johne’s disease occurs worldwide. In the U.S. it is estimated that 7.8 percent of the beef herds and 22 percent of the dairy herds are infected with M. paratuberculosis. Infection rates in cattle in other coun-

tries are generally similar. The disease has been reported in sheep, goats, elk, deer, bison, llamas and wild ruminants in zoos but accurate estimates of the number of infected animals are not available.

What causes the signs of Johne’s disease? M. paratuberculosis infects the last part of the small intestine (called the ileum) and causes a certain kind of inflammation called granulomatous inflammation. This inflammation thickens the intestinal wall, preventing it from functioning normally. This, among other factors, causes diarrhea and poor absorption of nutrients. As a result, even though animals will seem to be feeling and eating well, they will rapidly lose weight.

How do animals get Johne’s disease? Johne’s disease typically enters a herd or flock of animals when an infected, but healthy-looking, animal is purchased. The infection then spreads to other animals, often without the owner’s being aware of it. Eventually, perhaps after several years, the owner recognizes signs of the disease in a number of animals. Individual animals get infected by close contact with other infected animals that shed the bacterium in their manure. Most often, the infection is acquired by eating material contaminated with M. paratuberculosis when animals are very young. Young animals are far more susceptible to infection than are adults. Ingestion of the bacterium occurs when the newborn’s environment is contaminated with manure from an infected adult animal, or by drinking milk from an infected animal. The milk may become contaminated from the environment (manure-stained teats) or, in the advanced stages of the infection, the bacterium is shed directly into the milk. This has been shown to occur in dairy cattle and is presumed to occur in other species as well. After infection, many months or years go by until the infected animals shows signs of Johne’s disease.

How can you prevent your animals from getting Johne’s disease? The best way to avoid this chronic infectious disease is to be as certain as possible that animals brought into the herd are not infected with M. paratuberculosis. This is not always easy. Laboratory tests for cattle are more widely available than for sheep, goats or zoo animals. Still, some type of test is available for every animal. When using laboratory tests for pre-purchase screening of animals, it is important to understand that tests done on individual animals are not 100 per-

cent sensitive, meaning they can’t detect 100 percent of all infected animals. A way to get around this problem is to rely on tests done on the source herd of animals from which you want to buy. If a whole herd test is 100 percent negative, then the probability the herd is free of M. paratuberculosis infection is very high. Johne’s disease test-negative herds are the best sources of animals for purchase.

How do you test animals for Johne’s disease? There are three common ways to test animals for Johne’s disease: culture of fecal samples, DNA probe on fecal samples, and blood tests for antibodies to M. paratuberculosis. It is best to consult with your local veterinarian about testing. The majority of the research and the largest number of types of tests are available for cattle.

How do you control Johne’s disease? Methods for Johne’s disease control depend on the type of animal and the patterns of husbandry. In principle, two strategies must be employed at the same time: 1st: Newborn animals must be protected from infection by being born and raised in a clean environment and fed milk free of M. paratuberculosis. 2nd: Adult animals carrying the M. paratuberculosis infection must be identified by laboratory tests and removed from the herd, flock or enclosure.

Can Johne’s disease be cured with antibiotics? Although few studies report attempts to treat Johne’s disease with antibiotics, it is probably not curable. If it can be cured, it will likely require use of multiple antibiotics administered for a year or longer. For most animals, this is cost-prohibitive.

Can humans get Johne’s disease? This is a very controversial subject. There is a human disease called Crohn’s disease that resembles Johne’s disease. Crohn’s disease most commonly affects people 15 to 35 years old. It is a chronic diarrheal disease that has no known cause and no known cure. Recent reports in the medical literature indicate that 30 to 75 percent of patients with Crohn’s disease test positive for M. paratuberculosis. A few laboratories have grown M. paratuberculosis from a few Crohn’s patient specimens. However, no connection has been shown between contact with animals with Johne’s disease or milk consumption and Crohn’s disease. For more information about Johne’s disease visit www.Johnes.org. Dear TLBT Members: I hope everyone reading this letter is ready for a wonderful holiday season. We just finished Thanksgiving in our new home in Bulverde, TX. The Vizza clan was at our house in full force and my sister and her family came from Oklahoma for a few days. It was nice to see them. I am looking forward to Christmas and on to a New Year full of excitement and new adventures. The TLBAA will start the New Year at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo. This event will be packed with lots of activities. On January 16, 2010 Brent Bolen will be helping the youth with a special fundraiser. At 2 pm on Saturday, before the Premier Heifer sale, the TLBT youth will be dressing in our best show attire for a special fashion show. All are welcome to attend the fashon show at no charge, but donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the TLBT. Last month I mentioned that the TLBT is in full swing this season for Breast Cancer Awareness, as we try to raise money to donate to the Susan G Komen Foundation. We will be encouraging all youth, parents, grandparents, and everyone attending to wear “Pink” during the show. If you would like to donate, contact Shelby Coats for a pledge card. You can pledge X amount for each youth that wears “Pink” in the show ring that day. Mitchell Dale of McRee Ford will be printing up Pink bandanas for the youth to wear and extras for us to sell to the public. We will donate 100 percent of the money we raise from selling the bandanas and our pledges to the Suan G Komen foundation. I hope to see you in Fort Worth wearing PINK! STATE FAIR OF TEXAS UPDATE: Imagine the usual crowd at the Fair on a Saturday and then add an extra eighty thousand plus to the mix. OU and Texas fans turned out in droves to watch the football game. We had visitors galore walking through the barn to view the animals. It was a sea of Crimson Red and Burnt Orange. I was asked by the State Fair representatives to give a small speech at the annual exhibitor’s dinner on Saturday night. During my speech, I thank them for the opportunity to speak and for providing the exhibitors with a nice meal. October was Breast Cancer Awareness month and Mrs. Krueger and her team from Farris, TX show up wearing the color of the month - pink. All the youth along with their parents, and grandparents had special pink show shirts with their school name on the back. Mrs. Krueger told me that Mr. Doug Stotts from Hideaway Ranch donated all the screen printing and found the best “deal” on the shirts. Once again, Mr. and Mrs. Stotts show their support for the youth and other great causes. Buckles were provided for the State Fair winners by generous donations made during the show. A big thanks to all who contributed, you made a lot of kids happy! See you in Fort Worth!

The TLBGCA met on Monday, November 2, at the Longhorn Cafe and Saloon. The Call to Order, Invocation, Receipt of Minutes, and the Treasurer's Report preceded old and new business of the evening. We were pleased to have new members, Johnny and Ruby Evans, join us for the meeting. They are going to be wonderful, active, and contributing additions to our group and we want them to feel welcome. It won't be long before they are put to work on a committee or two. We heard the membership report and are pleased that we are holding steady. We also heard a report on the NASA Longhorn Project. There is a new Web site manager for the TLBGCA. Stephen Head, Angleton, TX, has graciously assumed the responsibility for our Web site and we are pleased and excited at the work he has already accomplished. What a gift he is! We are extremely grateful for his efforts on our behalf. Due to the economy and several unforeseen events, our Fall Festival party for the membership has been cancelled. We anticipate making the Revelry Party extra special to make up for the Fall Festival being cancelled. Please join us on March 13, at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Joyce Zunker Joyce (Krietsch) Zunker, 77, of Seguin, TX, mother of TLBAA Director Steven Zunker, Luling, TX, passed away Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009. She was born in Runge, Karnes County, Texas on November 2, 1931 to Herman C. Krietsch and Augusta Hedtke Krietsch. She attended Runge schools where she excelled in band and girls basketball. She married Alton Zunker on Aug. 21, 1948 in Seguin.She retired in May 2000 after 35 years of employment with Texas Lutheran University from a job she truly enjoyed. She was dubbed “the voice of TLU” and made it a point to know everyone on campus. TLU was her second family and she continued to return after retirement to help out when needed. She was an active member of the Seguin American Legion Auxiliary and the Seguin Hermann Sons Lodge Survivors include her husband, Alton Zunker, of Seguin; four sons, Kenneth Zunker and wife, Christine, of Ft. Worth; Glen Zunker, of Seguin; Terry Zunker, of Seguin; and Steven Zunker of Luling. Her grandchildren include Jeff Kunkel, Kim Kunkel Moran and Jennifer Zunker Simko. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman C. Kreitsch and Augusta (Jackie) Hedtke Krietsch; and her daughter Sandra (Sandy) Kunkel. Visitation was on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 from 5-9 PM at Goetz Funeral Home of Seguin. Services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home. Interment was at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
