Introduction

Introduction 5

Do. Be. is a mapping and best practice project, profiling a collection of sporting, cultural and community based activity providers, whose work supports the wellbeing of children, young people and families, across Rochdale Borough.

If you are referring a child or young person to activities or contacting an activity provider to find out more, we have a list of questions that you may find it helpful to ask the provider, see Page 12.

This innovative project, commissioned by NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group through Link4Life and managed by Cartwheel Arts, delivered a Best Practice programme and culminated in the production of this publication.

If you are an activity provider, we have a list of organisations that can help support Best Practice alongside helpful information about ‘Youth Proofing’ and best practice in volunteering.

If you are looking for supportive activity, this publication can guide you to providers that have signed up to the Do.Be. Manifesto and have been involved in our Best Practice programme. Featured Providers range from dance and circus activity, to arts and sports sessions and community groups. You can see at a glance what type of activity is provided, and in which township sessions are held, using our handy ‘Wayfinder’, see page 6.

This publication is a guide and all featured providers have been involved in the Do. Be. Best Practice programme (2017). However Cartwheel Arts, Link4Life and Pennine Care Foundation Trust cannot endorse organisations. We invite you to research providers before engaging with activities, asking the questions provided on Page 12 and seeking further guidance as needed using the contact details on their featured organisation pages.

Do. Be. Best Practice Event

Best Practice Process The Best Practice process consisted of 3 discussion sessions, a Best Practice event and 4 Best Practice CPD sessions for organisations.

Wellbeing Outcomes through cultural and sporting activity

Professional Practice

To be a featured provider in this publication, organisations had to take part in one or more of these sessions. Within this programme we focused on the following elements of Best Practice.

Quality of Delivery

Communication

Collaboration and Cross Sector Working

People attending the discussion sessions debated what each of these themes meant in practice for different types of organisations and from there we designed the Do.Be. event.

Touchstones Rochdale, provided a fantastic space for the Do. Be. event held on Friday 2nd June 2017. Kerry Bertram from Cartwheel Arts and Barry Woodburn from Link4Life hosted the day and led the participants through some innovative activity! The Mind Young Advisors led a discussion group on Youth Proofing, a ‘Wellbeing Island’ encouraged attendees to creatively explore what wellbeing feels like. We worked in pairs and groups to create a fantastic sculpture, which identified what is needed to make collaboration work and we facilitated a professional practice discussion, thinking about the standards of practice applicable for varying types and sizes of organisations. Attendees participated in ‘Open Choice Feedback’ showcasing various ways to gather feedback, from verbal feedback to confidential postcards and Low Fi Tweets. basically hand written posters read out in person

28 people attended the event, representing 12 sporting, cultural or community based organisations from across the borough, and all signed up to the Do. Be. Manifesto of Best Practice, which will be included in the publication. The event concluded with a powerful and touching speech from a Link4Life participant, Neil Abba, who explained how being involved with sports and volunteering had really helped turn his life around. All providers involved in Do. Be. have been invited to attend a programme of Best Practice CPD sessions, at Cartwheel Arts, Art for Wellbeing Studios, which will explore the Best Practice themes in more depth.

Key Considerations & Questions to ask organisations We recognise the importance of ensuring activity providers are providing professional practice and that parents, carers or referrers might need some direction on the right questions to ask providers. We decided rather than simply draft a list of questions in ‘Blue Peter’ style, we would actually ask providers and stakeholders what they thought was important. Representatives from Barnardos, Rochdale Youth Service, Link4Life, Rochdale Borough Council, Rochdale Mind Young Advisors, community organisations, NHS, Heywood Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group contributed to this list. The list below was developed at the Do. Be. Best Practice discussion sessions and the event. It is not exhaustive but one which we hope forms an excellent basis to enable checks and ensure organisations are providing professional practice in what they are offering and delivering. In creating this list we focused on the Safeguards for Parents and Carers when referring their family members or clients that they would expect organisations to adhere to.

Key to the Door project TOYS (Training Opportunities for Young Parents Scheme) is designed to help and support young parents with everyday issues around parenthood and life skills, to increase self esteem, gain confidence, skills and awareness surrounding everyday issues.

TOYS is able to contribute to countering feelings of isolation, both by bringing young parents together to share experiences but also by providing accessible information and developing the young parents confidence and skills.

The TOYS programme covers many aspects of parenting and offers a learning environment which recognises individual specific needs. One of the values of the course is its informal and positive approach to the young parents.

TOYS provides an on-site crèche helping pre school children to develop social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional skills. It provides a space for parents to have “me Time” knowing that their young children are being looked after and having fun. This is also effective in improving a range of outcomes for both the young parent and their child(ren), including parent and child interaction, children’s language development and the young parents’ attitudes towards their child(ren) and how to relate to them. Family members will report being happier and healthier as a result of engaging in locality Drop Ins and family learning provided through TOYS.

The TOYS Course offers young parents the opportunity to meet other parents, share experiences and develop confidence and self esteem. The parents build up a portfolio of their learning which can be accredited but more importantly acts as a resource of useful information and contact details enabling parents to be more motivated to share experiences with their peers and professionals. Parents build friendships and reduce isolation, helping them achieve their long term goals.

Dance Manchester Dance Manchester is the dance development organisation for Greater Manchester. We are a registered charity working to increase access to high quality creative dance activities for the people of Greater Manchester, including residents of the borough of Rochdale. We take high quality dance as both a physical activity and creative art form direct to the public, delivered by professional dance artists. We provide opportunities to take part in dance, to watch dance and to perform. Examples of our work include: STRIDE – Greater Manchester’s annual young men’s dance project, bringing young men together from all parts of the area to try dance perhaps for the first time and to work towards public performances, guided by experienced professional dance artists.

We believe dance:

Other examples include, dance classes for home educated children, creating dance performances with participants from across Greater Manchester, to take part in Manchester Day, an intergenerational flashmob to celebrate International Women’s festival, mature movers sessions and much more. We specialise in developing and presenting dance performances made for the outdoors and unusual spaces, aiming to give more people a chance to experience dance and to challenge stereotypes about who dance is for. We can take dance into shopping centres, galleries, parks, stations, schools, youth clubs through to GPs surgeries, Hospitals and Residential homes. We believe dance is a suitable activity for all ages and all body shapes and abilities and can contribute positively to wellbeing.

Dance in Schools – offering opportunities for young people to enhance their learning through dance, perhaps in science, perhaps on the environment, or perhaps about other cultures by engaging in dance styles from different parts of the world.

Youth Proofing

Providers may find the following information useful when thinking about the Communication and Professional Practice elements of Best Practice

Youth Proofing Information provided by Rochdale Mind, Young Advisors Youth-proofing is a service that helps play a part in the engagement of young people in all services throughout any sector. Professional documents can be hundreds of pages long, usually filled with vocabulary that young people might struggle to understand, but containing vital information for young people. Marketing materials aimed at young people, often don’t appeal to young people. This is where youth proofing comes into force and can turn a document into something more appropriate for young people and easy to understand. Youth proofing is a process of redesigning and rewording documents with the goal of transforming the work making it appealing and accessible to young people. This process can also reduce the amount of pages substantially as young people make the long paragraphs and sections shorter and easier to understand and read.

Volunteering

The end result is a document which young people are more likely to engage with and understand, thus contributing to initial interest and uptake by young people. This is a very important service because there are reports published by organisations such as local government that provide important information such as statistics regarding young people, but these young people are never able to access the information and this questions the whole report. Youthproofing is also about it breaking barriers between professionals and young people, which is vital for their sustained engagement with local services. For more information please email CurtisGreenwood@rochdalemind.org.uk

Information provided by Link4Life Volunteering is a hugely valuable and rewarding experience for the volunteers and the communities they support. More than 21 million people volunteer in the UK at least once a year, and this contributes an estimated £24bn to the UK economy. Link4Life provides a wide range of nationally recognised qualifications and courses for people working or volunteering in the sports and leisure industry. They provide the opportunity to develop professional skills and to support safe, effective and technically correct delivery of sessions for those taking part. Link4Life is also able to provide customised training packages to suit employers, groups, clubs and individuals as needed. The 2016 UK Civil Society Almanac revealed that two in five adults have volunteered at least once in the past year, and an Ipsos Mori report found that 42% of young people took part in meaningful social action in 2015. So, what is motivating these people to give their time and skills freely?

Benefits for the volunteer: •

People who engage in altruistic activities (e.g. volunteering), report a greater sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.

The NHS lists a number of health benefits relating to volunteering, including

Improved quality of life, improved ability to cope with ill health and improved self-esteem.

Action for Happiness list ten key ingredients for a happy and fulfilling life:

Giving, relating, exercising, awareness, trying out, direction, resilience, emotions, acceptance and meaning. We feel confident that volunteering ticks these boxes!

Volunteering is an opportunity to learn new skills, and can boost employment prospects.

Volunteering can help to heal mental illness and addiction.

Benefits for the beneficiaries and society: •

Volunteering enables people to play an active role in their society and contribute to positive social change. Volunteering helps to break down social barriers and offer people an opportunity to socialise with people from different social and cultural backgrounds. The 2016 World Happiness Report revealed that

social support and generosity are key determinants of national wellbeing. •

Volunteers support vulnerable people in society and enable them to live a healthy and rewarding life.
