BY TEHACHAPI NEWS Moscow Ballet’s company of 40 star-studded dancers performs Olympicworthy leaps and lunges, astonishing lifts and magnificent partnering throughout the “Great Russian Nutcracker” from New York City to Los Angeles, and will be stopping in Bakersfield. The Fox Theater, 2001 “H” St., Bakersfield, will host the troupe on Monday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. To the delight of audiences of all ages, the awardwinning company, which includes many International Ballet Competition winners, bring humor, charm and finesse to Tchaikovsky’s timeless score. Written between 1891 and 1892, the Nutcracker Suit premiered a week before Christmas at the Imperial Marlinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The music and ballet did not traverse to the western countries until the 1930s and 1940s. Although the suite was an instant favorite, the ballet did not became a true hit until the 1950s when it was performed in New York City by the New York City Ballet. The plot revolves around a German girl and her com-

The girl’s name varies depending upon the production company; she is known as Clara Stahlbaum, Marie, Maria or Masha. The Moscow Ballet’s presentation dramatizes the traditional story of Masha, meeting her “prince,” and includes a tribute to world peace and harmony. The Stahlbaum family’s lively Christmas includes magical toys made

by beloved Uncle Drosselmeyer. Masha is enchanted with her strange Nutcracker Doll and enters a dream world with him. The “Dove of Peace,” created in homage to Stanislav Vlasov’s original two-person bird which premiered in 1957 in New York City, escorts Masha and Nutcracker Prince to the “Land of Peace and Harmony,” which is in contrast to the traditional “Land of Sweets.” Dancers from the world’s ethnic heritages, including Hispanic, African, SlavicRussian, Asian and European, entertain the young

couple and bestow symbolic gifts in the form of playful, 10-foot tall silk puppets. This year’s production will be the company’s 21st in North America and includes 200 new and hand-embellished costumes designed by Shakespearean expert Arthur Oliver and created in St. Petersburg’s best theatrical costume shop. For tickets, visit the Fox Theater Box Office, 2001 “H” St., Bakersfield, call Vallitix at 661-322-5200 or purchase online at FoxTheaterOnline.com. Prices range from $33 to $73.50 per ticket.

Tehachapi Loop RR Club to hold Autumn Train Show

Pacific Mambo Orchestra to play at LPAC BY LANCASTER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Established as one of the most exciting live acts in the Bay Area, San Francisco’s premier Latin Salsa Big Band, Pacific Mambo Orchestra, is set to take the stage at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center on Friday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m. This 19-piece, percussive and brass-driven orchestra has created quite the “buzz” in a short period of time, and is currently the only Latin Big Band active on the West Coast. PMO’s Music Director, Marlow Rosado, recently won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Album for his album “Retro,” which included a roster of talent from the Latin music world including that of Tito Puente, Jr. Joining PMO on tour this fall, Puente’s fiery timbale playing and vocals, along with his passion for Latin music, honors his father and establishes him as a celebrated musician and performer on a mission to keep his father’s legacy and music alive. Audiences who crowded venues to see Tito Puente, Sr. in the past are returning to see his son, and are rewarded with that same high voltage celebration inher-

Co-founded by pianist Christian Tumalan and trumpeter Steffen Kuehn, PMO’s illustrious members have performed with some of the biggest names in the music industry; Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Isaac Delgado, Victor Manuelle and so many others. Kuehn and Tumalan build on the great Big Band Latin sounds of the 1940s through the 1960s by using both traditional and original arrangements that, when brought together, creates the sizzling Salsa sound of the future. They have created some of the hottest, dazzling orchestrations for an exceptional lineup of brass, winds, percussion and vocal musicians that “play” homage to Latin music giants like Machito, Tito Puente, Sr., Tito Rodriguez and Celia Cruz. Seats are available at $35 and $29. Tickets may be purchased online at www.LPAC.org, by phone at 661-723-5950 or in person at the LPAC Box Office, 750 W. Enjoy Your Favorite Produce ALL YEAR LONG (Family Features) Even though the cooler weather has arrived, you can still enjoy mouth-watering peaches, juicy tomatoes and sweet corn - all your summer favorites - thanks to the can. Fruits and vegetables are picked at the peak of their ripeness, when they're at their best, and canned just hours after picking. The canning process, therefore, locks in their nutrients, freshness and flavor naturally, without the need for preservatives. So, they're available and in-season all year long. Additionally, many canned fruits and vegetables have equal or more nutrients than their fresh and frozen counterparts. Canned peaches, for example are more nutritious than fresh, according to an Oregon State University study, because they have higher levels of vitamins A, C and E, as well as folate and antioxidants.

Baked Ziti with Pumpkin & Sausage Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 12

• Nonstick cooking spray • 4 cups dry regular or whole-wheat ziti • 1 can (15 ounces) Libby's 100% Pure Pumpkin • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • Pinch cayenne pepper • 1 can (12 ounces) NestlÈ Carnation Evaporated Fat Free Milk • 4 links (12 ounces) fully cooked Italian-seasoned chicken sausage, cut into 1/4-inch slices • 1 package (6 ounces) or about 4 cups pre-washed baby spinach • 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded part-skim or 2% milk reduced-fat mozzarella cheese • 1/2 cup (1.5 ounces) shredded Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 425∞F. Spray 4-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Prepare pasta according to package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta cooking water and set aside for later use. Drain pasta; return to cooking pot. Meanwhile, combine pumpkin, flour, garlic powder, salt, nutmeg and cayenne pepper in medium skillet over medium heat. Slowly add evaporated milk, stirring until smooth. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 to 3 minutes or until mixture begins to thicken slightly. Pour over pasta in pot. Add sausage and reserved pasta cooking water; stir well. Spread half of pasta mixture into prepared baking dish. Top with spinach. Cover with remaining pasta mixture. Lightly spray piece of foil with nonstick cooking spray. Cover ziti with foil, greased side down. Bake for 20 minutes or until heated through. Combine mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses in small bowl. Remove foil; sprinkle with cheese mixture. Bake, uncovered, for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.

GI Bill Eases College Costs for Military Families BY JASON ALDERMAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

As Veteran's Day approaches, this is a good time to remind our active duty service members and veterans about the many education assistance benefits available to them through the G.I. Bill and other government programs. The Post 9/11 GI Bill is more flexible and generally offers more generous benefits than earlier GI Bills. It provides up to 36 months of support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of active duty after September 11, 2001, or those with a service-connected disability after 30 days. An honorable discharge is required. Approved training includes undergraduate and graduate degrees, and vocational/technical/on-the-job training, among others. You will be eligible for benefits for 15 years from your last period of active duty of at least 90 consecutive days. This program covers 100 percent of tuition and fees for instate students at public institutions, paid directly to the school. For those attending private or foreign schools, it will pay up to $19,198.31 per academic year (sometimes more in certain states). If you attend a costlier private school – or a public school as a

non-resident – you also may be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program, where schools voluntarily fund tuition expenses exceeding the highest public instate undergraduate rate. The institution can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses and the Veteran's Administration will match the amount. The 9/11 GI Bill also will pay a books and supplies stipend of up to $1,000 per year, and a monthly housing allowance generally comparable to the military Basic Allowance for Housing for a military pay grade E-5 with dependents, based on the ZIP code for your school. Another advantage of this newer GI Bill: Armed Forces members with at least six years' service can transfer some or all of their benefits to their spouse and/or children. Here are the basic rules: • You must agree to four additional years of service. (Special rules apply if standard policy precludes you from serving four more years or you're eligible for retirement). • Because the clock starts ticking from the date you elect to participate – and you can't enroll additional beneficiaries after leaving the military – it's best to sign up all family members right away. You can always go back and change allocation

percentages or remove beneficiaries at any time until the benefits are used. • Spouses may begin using transferred benefits right away; however children must wait until you've served the full 10 years. • You and your spouse must use the benefits within 15 years of your leaving the military; children must use them by age 26. Montgomery GI Bill. This older version of the GI Bill may still be available if you didn't already opt for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. You're eligible if you started active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985, served continuously for three years, are honorably discharged and had your pay reduced by $100 a month for the first 12 months. (There's a separate plan for reservists.) For most people, this program is less generous than the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Benefits typically expire 10 years after military separation and are not transferrable to family members; plus, you pay tuition and fees upfront and are later reimbursed. The VA website has a tool to compare benefits under the two GI Bills. Jason Alderman directs Visa's financial education programs. To Follow Jason Alderman on Twitter: www.twitter.com/PracticalMoney

Journey

Visit Old Mission, Santa Barbara BY SCOTT CAMP TEHACHAPI NEWS

If Tehachapi is the land of four seasons, Santa Barbara is the land of one. Well, not exactly, but it is fair to say that the climate remains virtually perfect all year-round. So as your thermostat starts to drop in the upcoming months and you are looking to escape the snow, think about packing your bags and hitting Highway 101 for a getaway along the Central Coast. Sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara — otherwise referred to as the “American Riviera” — provides a picturesque and unique landscape that have been a beacon for tourists from around the world. But if the weather and views are not enough to motivate your weekend sojourn, consider what else the city has to offer: Old Mission, Santa Barbara. The Old Mission of Santa

Barbara, also dubbed the “Queen of the Missions,” was founded on Dec. 4, 1786, during the Feast of Saint Barbara by Padre Fermín Lasuén, and was the tenth of 21 missions founded in California by Spanish Franciscans in the 18th century. Despite experiencing a number of renovations after the 1925 Santa Barbara Earthquake, the mission retains its proverbial white edifice and red-tile roofing that characterizes the beauty of Spanish colonial architecture. Today, the Mission continues to serve as a venue for mass as well as a fulltime museum. For those interested in taking a stroll around the landmark, the mission offers a variety of self-guided and docentguided tours to explore the mission’s Sacred Garden, Historic Cemetery, church, and other rooms that comprise the museum. Prices range from $1—$6 See A VISIT/Page 12

A visit to the ‘Queen of the missions’

TCT to perform ‘A Christmas Story’ at the Beekay Theatre BY MONICA NADON TEHACHAPI COMMUNITY THEATRE

Tehachapi Community Theatre is excited to present “A Christmas Story” at the beautiful Beekay Theatre, 110 S. Green St. The play, written by Philip Grecian and based upon the well-known and loved motion picture of the same name, is about Little Ralphie, who longs to get a Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle for Christmas. Directors Heather Ringle and David Reed have assembled an outstanding cast to portray the characters of Ralphie Parker, his mother, his father, his little brother Randy, his teacher Miss Shields, his classmates Flick, Schwartz, Esther and Helen, the bully Scut Farkas and Santa Claus.

This family-friendly play runs the weekend of Thanksgiving, which makes a great outing for family and friends visiting from out of town. Don’t wait, get your tickets early as those performances fill up fast. Performance dates are Friday and Saturday nights, Nov. 22, 23, 29, 30, Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinees are Dec. 1, 8 and 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased online at www.tctonstage.com or at Picture Perfect-Stamps of Approval, 112 E. Tehachapi Blvd., Tehachapi Furniture, 20346 W. Valley Blvd., or Johnny’s Take n’ Bake, 807 Tucker Road. For more information please check out TCT’s web-site at www.tctonstage.com or call the TCT message line at 822-4037.

Continued from page 11 for self guided tours, and $4—$7 for docent-guided tours. Enveloped by 200-year-old sandstone walls, and sitting at the center of the Old Mission of Santa Barbara’s cemetery is the mausoleum, where many of the Mission’s past friars, and other prominent members Santa Barbara’s history, are buried. Also in the cemetery is a columbarium, which was added in 2011. One of the Mission’s other notable attractions is the La Huerta botanical garden. According to the mission’s website, “the garden portrays the botanic history of Spain’s agricultural transformation of the California landscape by preserving authentic and ancient plants collected from site where rare Mission-Era (1769-1834) varieties survived.” Those interested in taking a peaceful stroll through the garden will stumble upon flora native to California, “herbs of Alta California,” among other garden vegetables and seasonal crops. The Old Mission of Santa Barbara also serves as a venue for a number of annual community events, such as the I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival, which occurs in May of every year. The three-day event invites local artists to chalk up the asphalt in front of the mission and benefits the Children’s Creative Project in Santa Barbara.

For more information, contact the Mission at 805682-4713. It is located at 2201 Laguna St. There are several ways to get to Santa Barbara from Tehachapi. Consult a map and take your choice; the shortest routes will take you about three hours.
