When Blue Mountain Tribe formed 10 years ago, the founding Hairston family had a distinct aim for the blues and rock band. “Our vision was always to have a fully Native American band,” Paris Hairston said. Although she is not one of the musicians, Paris works as the band’s manager. Her husband, Robin Hairston, and son, Caleb Hairston, are the only known Native American father/son blues team. Robin is an award-winning harmonica player and Caleb is the band’s lead guitarist. Initially, the band was not exclusively composed of Native Americans. But after a year-long hiatus, the band’s search for Native musicians yielded the desired results. “Our patience has paid off,” Robin said. Although heritage was a major factor in choosing members, the band did not sacrifice that for musical quality. An ad posted by the group on bandmix.com called for a bass guitar player with “talent, dedication and commitment” and at least 10 years of experience. Paris said every member has extensive experience. Drummer Mark Drum has helped produce several gold albums. Rhythm guitarist “Cooperhawk” has a history in Christian music and is a prominent member in his inter-tribal drumming circle. Lead vocalist Joe Sandoval is called “the natural” by Paris because he has a “voice like a songbird” but never before broke into the band circuit. Bob Mitchell, bass player, is a former member of the Bakersfield-based band English Revolver and has played bass gui-

Steuber Road with Gonzonlo Higareda, makes live music a regular part of the eatery’s weekend life. When Blue Mountain Tribe members approached him with a request to play on his stage, he readily accepted. “I love that they’re from Tehachapi,” McCullough said. “I love that they’re indigenous people. We have a lot of culture in this area.” “Our goal is to bring the Native American people and culture in to mainstream America and to promote the cultures of the various indigenous nations,” Paris said. “We are so thrilled to be able to represent nations from all over the country,” Robin said. The band not only wants to represent Native nations, but to inspire them, according to Paris.
She explained how, many years ago, Caleb was diagnosed as a child with special needs who would need care his whole life. Paris refused to believe the doctors. On instinct, she gave the 12year-old boy a guitar and was shocked by the results. “He sounded out a song on one string,” Paris said. “And when he did that, my jaw literally dropped. He’s my prodigy.” After his mother gave him a musical outlet and removed all video games from his life, Caleb went from an “F” student to an “A” student. He graduated from Tehachapi High School and now, at 23, works on Edwards Air Force Base. Hired at the age of 17, he was the youngest civilian to ever be hired by the Department of Defense on a permanent basis, according to Paris. Paris said the band’s second purpose is to inspire Native American children and families to never give up on their dreams. “We hope to prove to them that they can do anything they set their minds to,” she said. “We hope Caleb can be a beacon of hope so that they don’t feel like they’re left to the bleakness of reservation life.” Some day, Paris said she hopes to start a music education program for special needs Native American children. In the meantime, the Hairston family is focused on making Blue Mountain Tribe “Tehachapi’s honorary band,” Robin said. “This is the kind of band that will raise the roof,” Paris said. “They’re high energy. You’ve got to have one foot in the grave to not want to get up and dance.”

The band Zave opens this summer’s “Music in the Park” series June 22.
Zave opens ‘Music in the Park’ June 22 Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District introduced Zave as the first band taking the stage for its “Music in the Park” series beginning Saturday, June 22, at Meadowbrook Park. Zave, the “Frencherican,” was born in Paris and born again in Los Angeles. Zave’s long history in the music industry started with being classically trained in piano as a child. Over the years he has been key in
the creation of six bands. After a hiatus of 15 years, Zave produced his current album, “Full Circle.” Zave currently resides in Bear Valley Springs. “Zave has a great bluesy-rock sound, is full of energy, engaging and entertaining,” TVRPD Recreation Supervisor LeAnn Williams said. “Tehachapi is going to love this concert.” Zave’s band consists of local Tehachapi residents Sean Edward Macy
(guitar/vocals), Rob Saranpa (bass/vocals) and Cal City resident Sean Privette (drums/vocals). The free event opens at 4 p.m. with Tehachapi native Trevor Shuster’s Hot Smokin’ Barbecue, a beer garden and a car show. Zave takes the stage at 6 p.m. “It’s going to be a great day at Meadowbrook,” Williams said.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have been diagnosed with atrial flutter. My cardiologist wants to perform a catheter ablation on me and says it's a safe procedure. Do you agree? -- B.L. ANSWER: Atrial flutter is a very rapid heartbeat. The atria, the two upper heart chambers, beat 260 to 300 times a minute. The lower heart chambers, the right and left ventricles, the heart's pumping chambers, beat at half that rate, still a fast heartbeat. Atrial flutter differs from atrial fibrillation, a more common heartrhythm disturbance, in the regularity of the heartbeat. Atrial fibrillation is both an irregular and fast heartbeat. Atrial flutter is a regular and fast beat. Fatigue, lightheadedness and shortness of breath are some of atrial flutter's symptoms. The heart can't be allowed to sustain such
rapid beating. Ablation, the destruction of heart tissue responsible for the speedup, is an excellent way to put an end to flutter. The heart doctor with a specially equipped catheter advances this thin, pliable tube from a surface blood vessel into the heart. When the doctor has the catheter at the right position, he or she turns on radio waves that create scars in the renegade part of the atrium. The abnormal rhythm stops. The success rate is 90 percent. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to have it done. The booklet on heartbeat irregularities explains the more common kinds of heartbeat disturbances. DONOHUE: Years ago, on one of the morning news shows, I heard people talking about taking a vitamin or mineral to keep mosquitoes from biting. Do you know what that is? Mosquitoes prefer my blood. I do not want to use some type of poison, like a repellent. -- P.J. ANSWER: Vitamin B-1, thiamine, has been touted as a way to discourage mosquitoes from biting. No proof of this exists, and I have serious doubts about this advice. Exhaled carbon dioxide attracts mosquitoes, as do other body chemicals and body heat. You don't have to fear repellents. They aren't poison. They don't kill mosquitoes. They drive them away -- repel them. Ones with DEET work well. Or if you want a natural product, try Repel. It
contains oil of lemon eucalyptus. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My concern is "tan without the sun" lotions. The "bronzers" work over a period of hours. If they were simple dyes, the color change would be immediate. It isn't. It takes hours before an effect is noticeable. Do they bring a natural skin pigment to the surface, and do they protect from the sun? -- A.R. ANSWER: Most of these products contain dihydroacetone, which reacts with cells in the topmost layer of skin and imparts the tan hue to it. It fades as these cells are shed. The color change does not protect against sunlight. These bronzers are not skin dyes. DR. Medicare’s 5-Star special enrollment period for 2013 underway (NewsUSA) - Medicare members have a second opportunity to join a 5star Medicare health plan, and they can enroll in even more Kaiser Permanente 5-star plans than the previous year. The 5-Star Special Enrollment Period, underway through November, provides Medicare beneficiaries with the option of enrolling in a 5-star plan rather than waiting until the usual fall open enrollment. Seniors and individuals with disabilities must meet certain eligibility criteria and live where a 5-star plan is offered. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services created the 5star Special Enrollment
Period to encourage enrollment in top-quality 5-star plans. CMS rates plans on a scale of one to five stars, with five being the highest for performance excellence. The ratings are based on how a plan helps members stay healthy, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service and pharmacy benefits. Kaiser Permanente leads the nation with the most 5-star Medicare health plans for 2013. Its Medicare plans in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Ohio are the newest additions to the 5-star category, and the only 5-star plans in their states. In addition, the Kaiser Permanente

Situated on a hilltop just off the 118 freeway in Simi Valley is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Center for Public Affairs. The library grounds provide a bird’s eye view of the presidential library of our 40th president, which also serves as his final resting place. The entire outdoor landscape is a recreation of the White House lawn where visitors are greeted upon arrival by multicolored section of the Berlin Wall and an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet. Taking approximately three years to construct, the library opened on November 4, 1991, and is the largest of the presidential libraries with over 153,000 square-feet and another 90,000 square-foot building housing the original Air Force One, which was once used by seven different American Presidents between 1972 and 2001. The library was built entirely with private donations and costs of construction are estimated at $60 million. Each year, over 300,000 visitors come to view the archives that reside at the library, which serves as a repository of records from Reagan’s administration. Over 50 million pages of presidential documents, 1.6 million photographs, as
well as a half million feet of film, audio, and videotapes are on hand. Personal papers and collections from Reagan’s eight years as Governor of California are housed as well. The museum displays permanent exhibits and rotates other ones on a routine basis to highlight key pieces. Visitors will start their tour with an exhibit that showcases Reagan's childhood and continues through his acting career, military service and though his political career. On display are various items used during Reagan’s first gubernatorial campaign, including his 1965 Ford Mustang and the desk he used as governor. In the gubernatorial gallery, continuous footage is played of the assassination attempt on Reagan by John Hinckley in 1981, and his inauguration suit, and a table from the White House Situation Room. There is also an exhibit about the proposed Strategic Defense Initiative to help visitors understand the tensions Reagan faced while bringing down the Soviet Union and ending the Cold War. Perhaps one of the most interesting displays is a full-scale replica of the Oval Office that allows visitors chance to step inside the office of the world’s most powerful leader for a moment.

Question: I fish in Mexico and have a question regarding bringing them back to the U.S. I saw a statement on Facebook where the poster said we cannot bring cowcod or fillets into U.S. waters even if we have a signed declaration to present with the fish. Despite the fact cowcod are not legal to possess in California, they are legal to catch in Mexico. I would like to know if this is true as many things posted on the Internet are not always correct. If it is correct, is this also true for the other three protected rockfishes – canary, yelloweye and bronzespot-
ted rockfish? If I take a legal Mexican limit of five bocaccio, would I be limited to bringing only three back into California? Also, I hunt in Mexico where it is legal to take 60 doves. At the border, could I declare the 60 doves when I cross the border or would I only be able to have the California limit of 10 doves? What are the laws? Since I am hunting and fishing in another country and abiding by their laws, do I have to also abide by California laws when I import game from another country? (Randy H.) Answer: It is unlawful to import or possess birds, mammals, fish, reptile or amphibian taken from outside of this state unless the following requirements are met (as per Fish and Game Code, section 2353): • The animals were legally taken and legally possessed outside of

Therefore, even if the fish were legally taken in Mexico but are prohibited here in California, then they cannot be
brought back here. This means while cowcod, canary, yelloweye and bronzespotted rockfishes may be legally caught and possessed in Mexico, they cannot be brought back to California. Filleting is also not allowed in Mexico, so no fish taken in Mexico can be brought back to California in a filleted condition. There is an exception for migratory gamebirds. Migratory gamebirds, such as doves, taken in Mexico fall under the federal migratory bird
regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 50. Federal regulations allow importation of doves from Mexico “not to exceed the maximum number permitted by Mexican authorities to be taken in any one day: Provided, that if the importer has his Mexican hunting permit date-stamped by appropriate Mexican wildlife authorities on the first day he hunts in Mexico, he may import the applicable Mexican possession limit corresponding to the number of days actually hunted during that particular trip.”(see CFR section 20.61.) Trolling for salmon Question: There is a one rod per angler rule in Monterey Bay. This last weekend while trolling with my husband for
salmon, we had three fish on board and needed one more for the two of us to have limits. My question is, do we need to fish with just one rod as one of us has a limit, or may we fish with two rods until we catch one more fish? (Donna S.) Answer: You can use two rods until you catch your final fish because boat limits apply in ocean waters. When there are two or more persons who are licensed or otherwise authorized to sport fish in ocean waters, fishing by all authorized persons aboard may continue until boat limits of finfish are taken and possessed aboard the vessel (CCR Title 14, section 27.60(c)). Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Heat vegetable oil in large skillet over medium heat and cook onion and garlic for 4 minutes or until softened. Add ground beef and cook for 4 minutes or until browned. Stir in taco seasoning and 1/4 cup water. Cook for 2 minutes or until sauce thickens. Heat refried beans in microwave or small saucepan and stir in remaining 1/4 cup water to thin slightly. Cut one tortilla in half and fit cut ends at either end of a 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish. Arrange two tortillas, slightly overlapping, to cover the bottom. Layer 1/3 refried beans, 1/3 meat mixture and 1 can enchilada sauce. Repeat to make a second layer. Repeat to make a third layer using salsa instead of enchilada sauce. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until lasagna is bubbling and cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting. If desired, top servings with sour cream and diced green onion.
Place taco shells in food processor and pulse until coarse crumbs form. (Or place in resealable plastic bag and crush.) Combine crumbs, pork and taco seasoning in mixing bowl. Form mixture into small meatballs, about 1/2 inch in diameter. Heat oil in large skillet and brown meatballs lightly, in batches if necessary, about 5 minutes per batch, turning frequently. Return meatballs to skillet and add enchilada sauce and water. Bring to boil over high heat; reduce heat and simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes or until meatballs are thoroughly cooked. Meanwhile, mash avocados and stir in guacamole seasoning mix. Let rest in the refrigerator according to package instructions. To serve, spoon meatballs and sauce into Fiesta Flats. Top each with shredded lettuce and guacamole. If desired, also top with Ortega Taco Sauce and Diced Green Chiles.
Chicken Taco Casserole Servings: 6 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes • 12 Ortega yellow corn or white corn taco shells • 3 cups shredded cooked chicken • 8 ounces shredded Monterey Jack cheese • 2 cups chicken stock • 1, 1.25-ounce package Ortega 40% Less Sodium Taco Seasoning Mix • 1, 16 ounce container sour cream • 1, 16 ounce jar Ortega Salsa, any variety • Juice of 1 lime Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Break taco shells into large chips. Combine taco chips, chicken, cheese, stock and taco seasoning in large mixing bowl.
Fundido Fiesta Flats Servings: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes • 1 pound ground beef • 1, 1.25-ounce package Ortega Taco Seasoning Mix or 40 percent Less Sodium Taco Seasoning Mix • 1/2 cup water • 6 ounces American cheese, cubed • 1, 16-ounce jar Ortega Salsa, any variety • 12 Ortega Fiesta Flats Taco Shells • Chopped fresh cilantro Brown beef in large skillet over medium-high heat; drain. Stir in taco seasoning and water. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until thickened. Meanwhile, combine cheese and one cup salsa in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook on high for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 20 seconds, until smooth. Evenly spoon meat mixture into Fiesta Flats and top with cheese mixture. Top with additional salsa and sprinkle with cilantro. If desired, also top with Ortega Taco Sauce and Diced Green Chiles.

Numerous free budgeting tools, including interactive calculators, are available at such sites as the government-sponsored MyMoney.gov (www.mymoney.gov), the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (www.nfcc.org), Mint.com (https://www.mint.com) and Practical Money Skills for Life (www.practicalmoneyskills.com), a free personal financial manage-
ment program run by Visa Inc. Next, know the score, credit-wise. Many people don't realize until it's too late that a poor credit score can trash your financial future. After you've missed a few loan payments, bounced some checks or exceeded your credit limits, you'll probably be charged higher loan and credit card interest rates and offered lower credit limits (if not denied credit altogether), unless and until you can raise your credit score. You may even have to pay higher insurance rates and harm your ability to rent an apartment or get a cell phone. To know where you stand, review your credit reports from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) to find out whether any negative actions have been reported and to look for errors or possible fraudulent activity
on your accounts. You can order one free report per year from each bureau if you order them through www.AnnualCreditReport.com; otherwise you'll pay a small fee. To learn more about credit reports and scores, visit the CFPB's "Ask CFPB." Another good resource is What's My Score (www.whatsmyscore.org), a financial literacy program for young adults run by Visa, which features a free, downloadable workbook called, "Money 101: A Crash Course in Better Money Management," and other free tools.
