the national arts Centre’s Year of the north started in October 2012 with the naC Orchestra’s 10-day Performance and education tour of Yukon, the northwest territories and nunavut. One of my favourite moments took place on opening night in iqaluit. The Orchestra musicians… wearing traditional inuit dress… performed classical repertoire by Vivaldi and Grieg before being joined onstage by legendary Nunavut accordionist Simeonie Keenainak. Together they brought the house down with a foot-stomping inuit song called Aqsarniit (Northern Lights), which had never been performed before by a classical music orchestra. Now that’s nation-building through the arts!
au Centre national des arts, l’année du nord a commencé en octobre 2012 par une tournée de 10 jours de concerts et d’activités éducatives de l’Orchestre du Cna au Yukon, dans les territoires du nord-Ouest et au nunavut. Un de mes moments préférés de cette tournée a eu lieu le premier soir à iqaluit. Les musiciens de l’Orchestre, en costumes traditionnels inuits, ont joué de la musique classique de Vivaldi et de Grieg avant d’être rejoints sur scène par le légendaire accordéoniste Simeonie Keenainak, du Nunavut. Ensemble, ils ont soulevé l’auditoire avec une chanson inuite entraînante intitulée Aqsarniit (Aurores boréales), qui n’avait jamais été interprétée auparavant par un ensemble de musique classique. Voilà une belle illustration des arts comme moyen d’expression de l’identité nationale!

You’ll be delighted and dazzled by the vibrancy and richness of contemporary northern arts and culture. every two years, when i come to write this letter for the festival brochure, i find myself revisiting some of the extraordinary people, places and things i have encountered as the producer of the scenes.
tous les deux ans, en écrivant mon mot de bienvenue au festival, je vois défiler dans ma tête les gens, les endroits et les moments extraordinaires que mon rôle de productrice de la scène m’a permis de connaître.
Our Government recognizes that a dynamic cultural scene contributes to the vitality of our communities and strengthens our society.
For the last two years, i have been immersing myself in the culture of the North. What a richly rewarding privilege it has been to discover Canada’s northern artists, their customs and their vibrant contemporary identity. Across the territories, i have met artists who are steeped in the traditions of their lands, yet whose presentday voices are fresh, compelling and very modern. i have met drummers, doll-makers, throat singers, carvers, painters, circus performers, musicians, chefs, actors, writers and storytellers. i have made new friends, discovered magical new places and witnessed art and passion that are thoroughly infectious and unforgettable.
Ces deux dernières années, je me suis plongée dans la culture du Nord canadien. Je reçois comme un immense privilège la chance que j’ai eue de découvrir les artistes du Nord canadien, leurs coutumes et leur vibrante identité contemporaine. J’ai rencontré des hommes et des femmes qui incarnent à la fois les traditions de leurs collectivités et une vision résolument moderne, rafraîchissante et engageante — des figures de tous les horizons artistiques : joueurs de tambour, artisans créateurs de poupées, interprètes de chant de gorge, sculpteurs, peintres, artistes de cirque, musiciens, chefs cuisiniers, comédiens, auteurs et conteurs. J’ai noué des amitiés, découvert des lieux magiques et observé d’irrésistibles et inoubliables manifestations de talent et de passion.

Through the arts, we express our creativity, passion, and love for our land. The flourishing NWT film and media arts industry is living proof of the skilled and multi-talented cultural artists we have across the territory. The arts help strengthen both our cultural identity as northern residents and our economy. NWT artists are part of sustainable, vibrant communities, and their beautiful creations use natural northern materials like fur, stone, birchbark, quills, even gold and diamonds. They are ambassadors for Canada’s North, and i am proud to support them.
À travers eux, nous exprimons notre créativité et notre amour pour cette terre qui est la nôtre. La florissante industrie du cinéma et des arts médiatiques des T.N.-O. témoigne de façon éloquente de l’étendue des talents artistiques à l’œuvre partout dans le territoire. Yukon musicians, performers and filmmakers participate in creative collaborations. Some of our most exciting visual artists explore subjects and media that defy expectations. And Yukon First Nation artists reflect tradition and embrace innovation.

Familiar northern stories are told from original points of view, conveying a North that is unique, complex and always changing. The spectacular dakhká Khwáan dancers set the celebratory tone in an event that showcases some of the many music and drum dancing traditions of Canada’s northern peoples. leela Gilday, diyet and sylvia Cloutier will perform, along with fiddle virtuoso boyd benjamin, throat singers evie Mark and akinisie sivuarapik, and the Pimadiziwin singers. NWT designer Jamie look has curated a runway fashion show that brings together the very best of the contemporary northern style scene. Traditional sewing is updated in dazzling, graphic beadwork; sealskin becomes a funky bomber-style jacket; and luxurious qiviuk spun from the soft undercoat of the muskox is knitted into stunning wraps. This one-of-a-kind show draws on the talents of both emerging and professionally trained designers whose inspirations are firmly located in the North, and those whose flair for design and eye for innovation with materials has been an inspiration to the younger generation. Still in his teens, Dene fiddler wesley hardisty already has an impressive musical résumé. his debut CD 12:12 won the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award for Best Fiddle CD. Known throughout the North as the “Fiddler of the Arctic,” and the pride of Kugluktuk, Colin adjun interprets old favourites and writes his own compositions with the skill of a master. These four great fiddlers will be joined by Karrnnel sawitsky, one of the stand-out artists from Prairie Scene, and a topnotch band for an evening of fantastic fiddle music.

Yukon storyteller sharon shorty, aka Gramma Susie, is feisty, opinionated, and above all, funny. She shares the stage with proud inuvialuit and Dene singer-songwriter leanne Goose, who’s equally at home with country, blues, and rock.
La Scène du Nord célèbre le récent agrandissement du Centre de santé des Autochtones Wabano en y présentant quelques-uns des artistes les plus dynamiques du Nord. The raven dances, the raven sings, the raven always has something to say. From the time inuit lived a nomadic life, the raven has occupied a central place in the imaginations and cultures of the peoples of the Eastern Arctic.
Le Corbeau danse, chante et a toujours quelque chose à dire. Depuis l’époque où les inuits vivaient en nomades, le Corbeau est au cœur de l’imaginaire et des cultures des peuples de l’Arctique oriental. Metteure en scène renommée, Sylvia Cloutier a réuni un groupe d’artistes de premier plan du Nunavut, du Nunavik et du Groenland pour explorer cet héritage inuit par la danse, la musique, les arts du cirque, le théâtre et le conte. Tulugak : inuit raven Stories est un spectacle tout à fait unique qui séduira petits et grands. La pièce fera aussi l’objet de matinées scolaires les 1er et 2 mai. initialement créé pour l’alianait arts festival, ce spectacle est le fruit d’une association avec le banff Centre et le Conseil des arts du Canada. During the Klondike Gold rush of 1898, Aboriginal and European cultures came together with sometimes tragic results. The accidental poisoning deaths of two members of the Tagish First Nation led to a cultural misunderstanding and clash of justice systems far from the reach of the papers of the day. Yukon playwright Leonard Linklater explores divergent views of justice in this fascinating play.

Take a theatre director with a fascination for 1950s sci-fi and a filmmaker with a passion for puppetry. Throw in a glue gun, some cardboard, string and markers, add a shared love of the absurd and you have the unique puppet experience that is Sci-Fi Double Feature. With its ingeniously designed puppets and sets and an irreverent approach to storytelling, this small-scale show brings new meaning to the term “double feature”. Thanks to the unique technique of capturing the performance live on video and simultaneously projecting it onto a large screen, the audience can choose to look at the “making of” in the puppet world, or to watch the movie unfold within the frame of the silver screen. This is puppetry that boldly goes where no puppetry has gone before! ramshackle Theatre acknowledges the support of the Yukon Government and Culture Quest.

Elevenyear-old Allashua ignores her parents’ warning not to fish on the ice. When the terrifying Qallupilluit pull her into the freezing water, she must use all her ingenuity to escape. With gorgeous puppets and music, this production by Ottawa’s rag & Bone Puppet Theatre brings the North to enchanting life for children ages five and up. Storyteller Michael Kusugak will be present at these events for a post-show chat. renowned Sobey Art Awardnominated Yukon artist Charles Stankievech presents the premiere of his new work, a film and sound installation recorded during his residency at the Canadian Forces Station Alert (Ellesmere island, Nunavut), the northernmost settlement on Earth. The installation is part of a series of fieldworks looking at remote outpost architecture, military infrastructure and the embedded landscape. Stankievech documented the station and surrounding landscape using computer‐ controlled time‐lapse filming to combat the eternal darkness of the polar winter. The eerie images hover somewhere between an abandoned Cold War station and an outer space outpost. Presented by the City of Ottawa and the NAC’s northern scene, in collaboration with saw video and the Ottawa art Gallery

Artiste renommé, finaliste pour le prix Sobey, le Yukonais Charles Stankievech présente en primeur sa nouvelle création, une installation cinématographique et sonore enregistrée pendant sa résidence à la Station des Forces canadiennes Alert (île d’Ellesmere, Nunavut), l’établissement le plus septentrional de la planète. L’installation fait partie d’une série d’œuvres de terrain qui s’intéresse à l’architecture des postes éloignés, aux infrastructures militaires et aux paysages intégrés. The National Gallery of Canada will be presenting a large-scale banner entitled Earth and Sky by artists Shuvinai Ashoona (Cape Dorset) and John Noestheden (Amsterdam). The collaboration between the two artists has resulted in a poetic rendering of Arctic landscapes and crystalline visions of the cosmos. Visitors will be able to walk under this 50-metre-long banner hung in the colonnade of the Gallery — from the main entrance to the Great hall. For the occasion, the drawing Earth and Sky, which is the preparatory drawing for the banner and is part of the National Gallery of Canada collection, will also be on display in the permanent galleries.
Le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada présente une grande bannière intitulée La terre et le ciel, œuvre conjointe de Shuvinai Ashoona (Cape Dorset) et John Noestheden (Amsterdam). De la collaboration entre les deux artistes est née une vision poétique des paysages de l’Arctique mêlés à des images cristallines du cosmos. Les visiteurs peuvent circuler sous cette bannière longue de 50 mètres, suspendue à la colonnade du Musée — depuis l’entrée principale jusqu’au Grand hall. Pour l’occasion, le dessin La terre et le ciel, qui a servi d’esquisse préparatoire pour la bannière et qui fait partie de la collection du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, est aussi présenté dans une salle d’exposition permanente.

On the Klondike highway from British Columbia to Yukon, winding around lakes and mountains, suddenly, a sign appears. it reads: “Yukon: Larger Than Life.” This exhibition of recent work by contemporary artists based in Yukon examines the region’s vast expanses, while not necessarily embracing what we tend to think of as the Great White North. The artists explore storytelling and the imaginary within their interpretations of nature and the everyday through video, collage, mixed media, and painting. Larger Than Life offers a cross-section of contemporary art in Yukon, which critically and indirectly examines the region’s sociopolitical dynamics. Sur la route du Klondike qui sillonne entre lacs et montagnes, un panneau apparaît brusquement à la sortie d’un virage. Les artistes mettent à contribution le conte et l’imaginaire dans leurs interprétations de la nature et de la vie quotidienne par la vidéo, le collage, les techniques mixtes et la peinture. Plus grand que nature offre un tour d’horizon de l’art contemporain au Yukon, posant un regard critique sur la dynamique sociopolitique de la région.

Aisa Qumaaluk Sivuaraapik (1925-1979) was part of a group of artists from Puvirnituq in Northern Quebec who created art that broke the mold of what was typically known as inuit art in the late 1960s. Spurred by a 1967 contest designed to shake up the subject matter of fishing, animals and everyday life in inuit sculpture, artwork depicting hybrids of mythologies, sexuality and religious subject matter emerged. Employing Sivuaraapik’s sculpture Cyclops (1969) from the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art as a point of departure, this exhibition explores his works, and those of other Nunavik artists, which broadened inuit sculpture thematics in the late 1960s and ’70s. The curator would like to acknowledge avataq Cultural institute (Montreal) for their research assistance in relation to this exhibition. Aisa Qumaaluk Sivuaraapik (1925-1979) faisait partie d’un groupe d’artistes de Puvirnituq, dans le Nord-du-Québec, qui ont brisé le moule de l’art inuit traditionnel vers la fin des années 1960. Dorset Seen looks at how Cape Dorset is seen through the eyes of its artists, both historical and contemporary. it features drawings and sculptures by 20 artists whose works chart the history and development of their community, touching on such topics as its built environment, social and political history, family and everyday life, interactions with outside agencies from the hBC to the rCMP, the impact of Christianity and technology, and the life of the artist. Dorset Seen provides historical context for the recent shift in the look and content of art from Cape Dorset, in which younger artists are garnering international acclaim for works that address the reality of their everyday lives. CUAG acknowledges the support of Carleton university, the Canada Council for the arts, the Ontario arts Council and the NAC’s northern scene.

The Klondike Gold rush of 1896-1899 put Dawson City on the map. Over the last decade, the Yukon town has gained another mythic allure as a site of artistic pilgrimage, largely due to the Klondike institute of Art and Culture’s Artist in residency Program, drawing artists from across Canada and abroad to spend time in this northern locale. Dawson Gold presents works made in and about Dawson City by Allison hrabluik, Valerie Salez, zin Taylor, and Tom Wolseley, four artists from across Canada and the UK, who each followed their creative compass to Dawson for different reasons. Comprising narrative video and animation pieces, as well as photographs documenting interventions in the landscape, this exhibition offers encounters with Dawson’s history, landscape and community. CUAG acknowledges the support of Carleton university, the Canada Council for the arts, the Ontario arts Council and the NAC’s northern scene.

Two Canadian curators have travelled to multiple communities in the Canadian North to meet with artists and undertake research for a two-part exhibition at Galerie SAW Gallery (Ottawa) and AXENÉO7 (Gatineau), as part of the NAC’s Northern Scene. Candice hopkins (Ottawa /Albuquerque, New Mexico) creates a survey of artwork by emerging artists from Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut at Galerie SAW Gallery. Emerging artists from Nunavik are featured at AXENÉO7. This exhibition will generate visibility for a generation of artists who are often underrepresented, and will create fruitful exchanges between northern artists and curators and organizations in the South.

The Canada Council Art Bank collection holds almost 700 works by artists from northern communities in Canada. To celebrate the National Arts Centre’s Northern Scene, the Art Bank selected a number of works that are remarkable in their materiality — whalebone, beads, fur, feathers, fibre and soapstone. The works in this exhibition highlight the care given to elaborate stitching and beading by women (Orly Kilabuk and Lizzie ittinuar), the conceptual nature of more contemporary allusions to family (Doug Smarch), and the use of various materials as decorative elements on a ceremonial object (Tommy Tatatupik).

La collection de la Banque d’œuvres d’art du Conseil des arts du Canada comprend près de 700 œuvres d’artistes des communautés du Nord canadien. À l’occasion de la Scène du Nord du Centre national des Arts, la Banque d’œuvres d’art a sélectionné un certain nombre de pièces remarquables par leurs composantes matérielles telles que des os de baleine, des perles, de la fourrure, des plumes, des fibres et de la stéatite. Les œuvres de cette exposition mettent en lumière les soins apportés par les femmes (Orly Kilabuk et Lizzie ittinuar) à la couture et au perlage, la nature conceptuelle d’allusions plus contemporaines à la famille (Doug Smarch), ainsi que l’utilisation de divers matériaux comme éléments décoratifs d’un objet cérémonial (Tommy Tatatupik).
Jessie Oonark was born in the Back river Area of the Northwest Territories in 1906. As a young woman, Oonark worked chiefly in textiles. in 1959 she was encouraged to add drawing to her repertoire and her work was included in the first edition of Cape Dorset prints in 1960, and in Baker Lake print editions from 1970 to 1985. Oonark continued her work in textiles. This gorgeous piece, Untitled (1973), is her largest work. Created of wool and felt, it was lent to the NAC by William and Jean Teron. it features symbolic figures and legends of the North, portrayed in bright colours, and set in rows and groupings on a striking turquoise-coloured background. in 1984 Oonark was awarded the Order of Canada. Since her death in 1985, she has come to be considered among the most influential and important inuit artists.

For a child, anything can become a doll: a stick, a leaf, a bit of ragged leather. in the past, children learned at an early age how to scrape and tan hides, spin thread and weave it into cloth, or sew boots with animal sinew. Making doll clothes was a way to perfect these essential skills. Sewing Our Traditions is a gorgeous collection of 50 hand-made dolls created by inuit and First Nations artists from across the Canadian North. The doll-makers exquisitely record and reflect northern life and customs using tiny intricate details like beaded moccasins and materials such as locally trapped fur and home-tanned hide. ARTISTS’ MARKETPLACE / MARCHÉ DES ARTISTES Un enfant peut faire une poupée avec n’importe quel objet : une brindille, une feuille, un bout de cuir usé. Autrefois, les enfants apprenaient dès leur plus jeune âge à gratter et à tanner les peaux, à filer et à broder, et à coudre des bottines avec de la babiche. Confectionner des vêtements de poupée était une façon de parfaire ces habiletés essentielles. Traditions cousues main est une superbe collection de 50 poupées fabriquées à la main par des artistes inuits et des Premières Nations de tout le Nord canadien. Ces poupées reflètent la vie et les coutumes du Nord dans les détails les plus subtils, comme les mocassins ornés de perles, et dans le choix des matériaux comme les fourrures d’animaux piégés localement et les cuirs tannés de façon artisanale. Cette exposition offre un magnifique aperçu de l’habileté et de la créativité des meilleurs artisans des trois territoires du Nord canadien.

For over 60 years, the Canadian Museum of Civilization has been collecting and exhibiting outstanding works created by inuit artists. We are one of the country’s foremost venues for the study of inuit art, with a collection of more than 10,000 works produced in the second half of the 20th century. You will find many fascinating masterworks now on display in our permanent galleries by inuit artists such as Jamasie Pitseolak, Annie Pootoogook and William Noah.

Long heralded as a tool of realism, photography in the Arctic was historically the domain of visiting explorers, scientists and ethnographers. Today, inuit artists utilize photography for its documentary potential and as a means of social commentary and artistic reflection. Much like sculpture, drawing and printmaking, photography is fast becoming a legitimate form of inuit expression. Featuring reproductions of early work by Peter and Aggeok Pitseolak, and contemporary photographs by Jimmy Manning, Barry Pottle, Mathew Nuqingaq, Chris Sampson and Kayley Mackay, this exhibition aims to address the origins of the use of photography among inuit artists and where these practices have led.

CANADiAN MUSEUM OF CiViLizATiON, ThEATrE MUSÉE CANADiEN DES CiViLiSATiONS, ThÉâTrE 100 Laurier, Gatineau artcirq, a remarkable northern success story, has delighted and thrilled audiences around the globe, most notably at the Vancouver Olympics and at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the U.K. Guillaume Saladin, who trained at the famous National Circus School in Montreal and toured with Cirque Éloize, conceived Artcirq in 1998 to engage young people in the remote Arctic community of igloolik. What began as a way to provide youth with a cathartic artistic outlet has become a sought-after artistic phenomenon. This energetic troupe blends circus with inuit culture in original performances that win the hearts of critics and audiences alike.
artcirq a charmé et enthousiasmé les auditoires à travers le monde, notamment dans le cadre des Jeux olympiques de Vancouver et des célébrations du Jubilé de diamant de la reine au royaume-Uni. Pre-dating Chaplin’s classic film The Gold rush by two years, The Grub-Stake is a riveting silent film, created in 1923 by Canadian pioneer filmmaker Nell Shipman. it tells the tale of a spirited gal who journeys to the Klondike during the 1898 Gold rush to find love and prosperity, only to discover that greed and villainy rule the day in Dawson City. This “revisited” version, a huge hit at the Vancouver international Film Festival, features six actors and five musicians who perform with the film for 75 hilarious minutes. Using a script compiled entirely from the works of Shakespeare and a new musical score to accompany the on-screen melodrama, this is a film experience like no other — a brilliant collision of culture and art from across three centuries.

On y raconte l’histoire d’une fougueuse jeune femme qui part chercher amour et fortune au Klondike en 1898 pour découvrir que la cupidité et la vilenie règlent la vie à Dawson. Dans cette version « revisitée », qui a fait sensation au Festival international du film de Vancouver, six comédiens et cinq musiciens accompagnent la projection dans un spectacle hilarant de 75 minutes. Des textes de Shakespeare et une trame musicale agrémentant l’action à l’écran composent une expérience unique qui parcourt trois siècles de culture et d’art.

BLOOD AND SNOW
Degrees North is a feature documentary shot south to north across the latitudes of Canada by Dawson City’s dan sokolowski. An exploration of the beauty of the North through 16mm film, it begins at Pelee island (42 degrees North) and finishes at the Arctic Circle (66 degrees North). Using light, colour and composition, Degrees North is an alchemistic blend of live action landscape photography, animation, and music by Peter Togni, Sanctuary, rebecca Campbell and ian Tamblyn.
Pour ce long métrage documentaire tourné en 16 mm, le cinéaste de Dawson dan sokolowski a exploré les splendeurs canadiennes sous toutes les latitudes du pays, de l’île Pelée (42 degrés Nord) jusqu’au cercle polaire arctique (66 degrés Nord). Based on the stunning short story by acclaimed Fort Smith, NWT writer richard van Camp, this arresting radio play is performed live featuring a cast of indigenous actors. With a script adapted from the original story by Yellowknife director and actor reneltta arluk, i Count Myself Among Them tells the tale of one Dogrib man’s journey from his criminal connections with drug dealing gangs in B.C. to his own spiritual awakening. The story is brought to life with original sound design by travis Mercredi, who also conceived the project inspired by his passion to find new ways to share northern stories. Yukon’s Michele Genest, aka the Boreal Gourmet, offers a portrait of northern life with an exploration of wild or “country” foods in gourmet recipes. robin wasicuna of Yellowknife’s Wiseguy Foods creates innovative haute cuisine from a trailer kitchen that is the talk of the town. rebecca veevee, “Nunavut’s answer to Jamie Oliver”, turns Northerners on to healthy eating with an infectious passion for local ingredients. The host of the evening is NAC interim Executive Chef John Morris. High school dropout rate cut in half in 2 decades By MARK IYPE
The number of young Canadians not getting a high school diploma has been slashed nearly in half over the last 20 years according to Statistics Canada, a change many experts say reflects the rising value of education in the country. In 1990-91, nearly 340,000 or 16.6 per cent of young people aged 20 to 24 had not completed a high school diploma and were not attending school.
“It’s a dramatic change over time, and hopefully that means we can keep it going,� said Andrew Parkin, director general of the Council of Ministers of Education.
Parkin, whose group is an intergovernmental body designed to provide a forum for the education ministries of all 13 provinces and territories, said governments across the country have recognized the value of education and its influence on everything
