New Real Estate School in Vero Beach Now Vero has a place where real estate agents and potential real estate agents can go for their continuing education or to learn about the industry and a rewarding career. The instructor and founder Michael Salazar was born in Colombia, South America. Michael comes from a large family many of whom are real estate professionals. He grew up in the City of Vero Beach. He graduated in 2009 from Indian River Charter High School with two degrees an Associates in Business Administration and an Associates in Marketing Management from Indian River State College. He attended the University of Miami, however, Michael found his passion in the real estate industry, and worked as a luxury real estate assistant in Miami. Michael eventually became a Licensed Florida Real Estate Agent in 2013 and truly loves making a difference in the industry. Teaching has always been another one of his passions. Michael started teaching virtual graphic design and drafting courses while he was still in high school. He has always believed in sharing his knowledge, one example, he would teach in large classroom settings pro-bono in Colombian disadvantaged neighborhoods when traveling to visit. Michael’s students will clearly see that he teaches simply for the joy of teaching. “There is no better sight than that of a student’s facial expressions -AHA MOMENTS- when the student really learns something new, even sometimes mastering a subject BETTER than the instructor, they’ll remember that moment forever” says Michael. Students shall find Michael’s style of teaching is both energetic and fun, making the students’ time in class fly-by while learning. Students remember the material very well by the memory cues he often mentions in class. In 2015 Michael Salazar put both these passions [teaching and real estate] together and got licensed as a Florida Real Estate Instructor. He taught for other real estate schools all over East Florida. Then, in January 2018 Michael founded Luxury Real Estate School, LLC. Anyone wanting to book a class should get in touch by calling 772-538-9698 or emailing Contact@LuxuryRealEstateSchool.com Things that make Luxury Real Estate School, LLC unique are: 1. Pricing: we have minimized our costs and pass along the savings. 2. Discounts: for ‘study buddies’ who take courses together. And, for U.S. military veterans, their spouses, and eligible dependents. 3. Location: plenty of parking. Next to the city marina and dog park. 4. Locally owned and operated; we support our local community. 5. Fully licensed Florida Real Estate School. 6. Everything needed for the class is included. 7. We offer a 2-Day CRAM Review for the Florida state exam. 8. Includes calculators, and a binder with tables and memory aids. 9. Classes are small (no more than 12) with a large 65” display. 10. And, so much more!!!

Look north from the Barber Bridge in Vero Beach, and you’ll see a forest of tall masts rising from sailboats moored at the yacht club and the city marina. Look south from the 17th Street Bridge, and you’ll often see a very different flotilla – shorter masts with sails raised atop small boats darting about on the Indian River Lagoon. These sailboats are manned by local children who are students of the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County, and who are learning much more than sailing as they round the buoys or explore the spoil islands. The mission of the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County, Inc. is to provide Indian River County with educational, recreational, and competitive sailing programs for all ages in a fun and safe environment. While sailing is all too often a “rich kid sport”, YSF seeks to eliminate financial and other demographic barriers by offering instruction and equipment free of charge to local youths, thus opening a world of opportunity to a broad range of children regardless of background and means.

YSF is driven by a “Sail for Life” philosophy, recognizing that sailing helps build confidence and self-esteem — key building blocks for achieving one’s full potential and a successful life. Getting kids outdoors and away from the digital world exposes them to our rich natural environment, taking them out of their comfort zones and into the world of wind and waves. While learning the physics of sail and rudder along with other skills necessary to pilot a boat, young sailors inevitably develop a sense of responsibility, accountability, cooperation, self-assurance, and decision-making. The process of setting out and returning to port safely under one’s own control fosters a sense of satisfaction that stays with these young sailors long after they’re back on dry land and the boats are secured. Founded in 2009 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit by Charlie and Chris Pope, YSF began as a bare bones but earnest operation at the Vero Beach City Marina, teaching children to sail in wooden boats they themselves helped to build.

By 2013, the organization had moved to the city’s wastewater treatment plant, and YSF volunteers and students had built a fleet of thirty-one 8-foot Optimist dinghies. Other boats were added by purchase and donation, and 50 youngsters were enrolled in free sailing lessons. Building on that early momentum, YSF has continued to grow and now encompasses beginner to varsity racing sailing instruction and serves over 150 children grades 4 through 12. YSF’s weekly summer camps, first introduced in 2011, have proved increasingly popular, expanding from one facility to two, from four weeks to eight, and from 37 children to almost 150. Twenty percent of this year’s participants received full or partial scholarships, funded entirely by YSF donors. Attracting youngsters from the local community as well as those visiting from as far away as New Mexico and the UK, the camps are held in June and July at The Moorings Yacht & Country Club and at Quail Valley River Club. Each week 18 children age 8 to 12 learn to sail, have fun cruising the Indian River Lagoon, and enjoy the amenities of these beautiful resorts.

During the school year, YSF is on the water seven days a week, utilizing a fleet that has grown to 75 sailboats with six power boats for coaching and safety. Instruction and boats are provided free to all our junior sailors, who come from all over Indian River County. Squadrons of 20 sailors each from Beachland Elementary, Gifford Middle and Osceola Magnet schools meet one day a week after school. Varsity and Junior Varsity sailors from Vero Beach High School, Indian River Charter High School, and St. Edward’s School, along with homeschool students, practice twice a week. Over fifty additional youngsters, beginners to advanced, eagerly spend every Saturday engaged in free sailing instruction. (Continues on next page)

New this fall will be the introduction of adaptive sailing to serve the special needs community. Working with The Arc and Special Olympics, YSF will enable adults and youth to experience the joys of sailing in specially designed boats with instructors trained to serve this segment of our community. Another new initiative is YSF’s partnership with the Ocean Research and Conservation Association, Inc. (ORCA) of Ft Pierce. Enhancing YSF’s existing efforts to foster ecological stewardship by teaching young sailors about local environmental challenges, YSF junior sailors, under ORCA supervision, are building shallow water breakwaters in the Indian River Lagoon using ORCA-supplied 60-pound bags of oyster shells. The breakwaters help stabilize the shoreline and provide the essential hard surface for a variety of sheltered and attached organisms. Following the breakwater construction, ORCA will provide seagrass and native plants for planting around the breakwater, and YSF will provide field sampling and environmental monitoring for years to come as directed by ORCA.

All of this would be impossible without strong community support and dedicated volunteers. During the school year over 50 men and women come to YSF each week to maintain and repair the boats, provide expert sailing instruction, and serve as safety officers on the water. Financially, YSF is one hundred percent dependent on the generosity of individual donors and family foundations. Each donation of time, service or money has a direct impact on a young life in Indian River County, providing a unique opportunity for children of all backgrounds to experience the thrills, the challenges, the successes, and the pure joy of sailing. For more information on programs, to volunteer or to make a financial contribution, please visit www.ysfirc.org or email info@ysfirc.org.

At the American Cancer Society, we’re on a mission to free the world from cancer.

Attacking Cancer from Every Angle

Until we do, we’ll be funding and conducting research, sharing expert information, supporting patients, and spreading the word about prevention. All so you can live longer — and better. On the Treasure Coast, the American Cancer Society proudly engages about a hundred volunteers who plan events that engage and empower communities as they celebrate survivors and caregivers or pause to remember those who we miss so dearly. In the process, thousands of people come together and raise funds that allow the American Cancer Society to continue funding life-saving treatments and services that support cancer patients and caregivers here and everywhere!

Laura McGarry, Volunteer Chair MSABC Indian River

In October, we do this through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The theme this year is, “YOUnited! – what unites us ignites us!” Volunteer event leads are, Laura McGarry, Indian River County; Denise Averill, St. Lucie County; and Heather McAdams, Martin County. All of three events are presented this year by our Pink Premier Sponsor and partner – Seacoast Bank!

Each event has a full team of volunteers working to engage thousands of people for exciting and empowering experiences. Walk with us! For more information go to www.makingstrideswalk.org enter your zip code to find the event site nearest you! Everyone is invited to these non-competitive walks designed to build awareness of breast cancer prevention and early detection. Each walk launched with community kickoff rallies in August to begin the registration and fundraising campaigns that will culminate on three consecutive Saturday mornings of October in each of the Treasure Coast counties. The celebrations begin Oct. 13 at Riverside Park in Vero Beach, then move to Port St. Lucie Oct. 20 at First Data Field and the final walk is Oct. 27 at Memorial Park in Stuart.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research, provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk, and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. We approach our mission to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world without cancer with the core values of Integrity, Compassion, Courage, Determination, and Diversity. Cancer does not know the boundaries of age, ethnicity, gender, etc. Nor does cancer know geographic boundaries. Take breast cancer, for instance, there are likely hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of women around the world who are alive today because of the drugs Tamoxifen and Herceptin. The American Cancer Society funded research that led to the development of these life-saving treatments. Although the answers – in this example Tamoxifen and Herceptin – were not found in our specific community, individual community fundraising efforts all across the country allowed us to fund what has become the answer – the cure – for many women right here on the Treasure Coast. Laura McGarry, our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Volunteer Event Lead, Elizabeth April now volunteering on the survivor committee and countless others are living testimony.

Survivors attending the kickoff of Making Strides

As of March 2018, the American Cancer Society has invested $61 million in breast cancer research. You can be a part of this incredible work the American Cancer Society is doing and supporting. You can help save lives and increase access to care for cancer patients. The American Cancer Society is always looking for volunteers or time, treasure and/or talent! The local staff is here to meet you and explore the right opportunities for you, just call us at the Treasure Coast office (772) 562-2272. You may also call us for patient information, support, and information on resources by calling (800) 227-2345. You may call any time of the day or night!

The Quack is Back! It’s happening again. On October 14, Captain Hiram’s and the Indian River Lagoon will be a sea of yellow-yellow rubber ducks that is! Thousands of little, yellow rubber ducks will be racing to shore, bringing hope to an entire county.

Adding to the excitement of gathering with your closest friends for a worthy cause while enjoying the great outdoors, TCCH is going to make a few lucky duck owners very happy. That’s right, every one of your adopted ducks is also a chance for you to win. The owner of the first place duck will receive a $1,000 cash prize-- that’s nothing to quack about! Second and third place prizes are $500 and $250, respectively. Whether your duck puts you in the money or not, you’ll still leave a winner, because you will leave with that awesome feeling you get from helping improve the quality of life in your community.

Treasure Coast Community Health (TCCH) is hosting its signature event: the Sixth Annual Great Duck Derby. Thousands of spectators will watch as over 5,000 yellow rubber ducks splash into the IR lagoon and feverishly race towards the finish.....make that shore....line. TCCH depends on these ducks because they represent a community-wide effort to make healthcare affordable for everyone.

The Duck Derby festivities kick off at 12 noon. Ducks hit the water around 2 pm. When they make it to shore is anybody’s guess! A family fun day has been planned with kids activities, great music and special appearances by Quackers, the Great Duck Derby mascot. Join the flock! You can adopt a duck at any TCCH facility or online at TheGreatDuckDerby.com

You see, every one of these ducks means money going to support your neighbor who struggles to pay for doctor visits, including children, mothers and uncles. All proceeds benefit more than 19,000 patients served by TCCH annually. So do you have a duck in the race? Duck adoptions are only $5 a duck, but better yet, you can adopt a Quack Pack (that’s six ducks for the price of five) for $25!

Finding Purpose at The Refuge By Brenda Sposato

Finding purpose in the midst of tragedy can be quite difficult for a mother who lost her children because of two separate devastating accidents. For Carol, a nine-month graduate from Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach, her life began to have meaning the day she arrived in the program. “I lost the only two children I had, 12 years apart,” she says. Before arriving at the Refuge, Carol was depressed and hopeless. Also, as you read this, her mother is dying of cancer. “Since I came to the Refuge, God has allowed me to no longer focus on my pain but instead focus on the future He has for me. To be able to even fathom a future in victory is a miracle.”

How did this happen? Where did her pain and suffering go? How could she be excited about her future when all the ones she loved so deeply were gone from her life?

“Carol’s pain hasn’t left, she’s learned to give it to God and allowed Scripture to renew her mind which produces wisdom, endurance, courage, and yes, even joy. She is not just a survivor but a thriver.” At the Refuge the approach to care is unique, using cognitive behavioral therapy along with Biblical principles. In addition to its residential program and community counseling center, the ministry offers life-changing opportunities through support groups such as Co-Dependency, Anger Management, and Shelter from the Storm for those who have been sexually abused. At the Refuge, people can start over with a new understanding of God’s plan for their lives. If you need help or know someone that does, please call us today at 772-770-4424 or email womensrefugevb@att.net. To make a donation, you may mail your checks to P.O. Box 1484, Vero Beach, FL 32961. Support the Women’s Refuge by visiting their Resale Shop located in the Collins Center, behind the K-mart Plaza at 1615 10th Ave., Vero Beach, FL 32960 or call 772-567-3598. Volunteers are always welcomed!

For more than 20 years, the Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach has been serving the Treasure Coast and thousands of women like Carol through its Christian residential program and community counseling center which provides help, hope and lifelong healing for emotionally and spiritually wounded women, families, and marriages. Executive Director, Diane Ludwig explains that at the Refuge, there is life after death. “People suffering from life’s trauma such as divorce, death, despair, and anxiety come to us to find true freedom, new purpose and clear direction for their lives.”

Director of Counseling Services Cheryl Deal, Nine-Month Graduate Carol and Excutive Director Diane Ludwig

Feed the Lambs needs a little tending to in the South County area of Indian River By John May Feed the Lambs Enrichment program is seeking support to continue helping underprivileged, low-income youth and families in the Vero Beach community. They offer after-school tutoring, summer camp opportunities, and electrical apprenticeships. “The program is designed to empower and enlighten children regardless of their economic status,” explains board president John May.

Over the years, the community and school board has been very generous, offering a place to meet, food, and other program necessities. “We’re deeply thankful. They’ve donated breakfast and lunch for more than 80 children as well as allow us to operate our summer and tutoring program at the Oslo Middle School. But this is not a permanent solution,” he said. Other partners include Epic Missions. If you’re interested in supporting Feed the Lambs or for more information about its programs, call John May at (772) 501-2617 or Kenya May at (772) 404-9955. Donations can be mailed to Feed the Lambs Enrichment Program, 1615 18th Ave. SW, Vero Beach, FL 32962.

”Every child is important. We want to engage, equip, and educate our youth. Activities are centered on Bible stories, arts, crafts, math, reading, including tutoring and field trips. Last year, we took our students to the Rapids water park, and this year we went to Busch Gardens. The kids had a blast.” There are a lot of great things happening at Feed the Lambs, but the agency confirms, they’ve had challenges. “We don’t always have transportation to get to where we want to go. We also struggle with not having a permanent location,” John said.

The Enrichment Program currently operates Monday through Friday including Thursdays, 3-5 p.m. at Oslo Middle School and at the Preserved Oslo Apartments 3:30 p.m. - 5: 30 p.m on Monday and Friday at the Vero Oslo area. Find out more at feedthelambsep.com.

The Salvation Army of Vero Beach serving all of Indian River County is ‘Doing the Most Good’ on a daily basis. This community has blessed and entrusted us with their generous gifts of time, talents, and monetary donations. In turn, we have kept up with being one of the most trustworthy charities not only locally, but around the world.

You maybe ask: “What, How, Why?” Our (short) Answer: What – Right here in Indian River County, we have many great services that are helping the last, the lost, and the least find hope. We are a church serving the community through our food pantry. We provide assistance with groceries, clothing vouchers, and other needs. Our mobile feeding truck is in the community three days a week serving up to 200 meals a day to those that are hungry and hopeless. In the time of disaster, we are out serving our community through clean up, feeding, emotional and spiritual care, as well as long-term recovery social services. Lastly, our Christmas effort is to ensure each child and senior in this community has a gift and food to celebrate with their families and friends. How – We do all of this with an Army of volunteers that believe in our mission and support us in many ways including – cooking food, ringing bells at red kettles, driving vehicles, sorting donations, just to name a few. With the help of great volunteers and a generous community that believes in our

ministry, we continue to get the most “bang for the buck” – 82 cents of every dollar goes right into helping those in need. Why – The Love of God. We have been saved by the grace of God to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human need in His name without discrimination. This is our motivation, so that others may find hope in Christ Jesus. Help us help others by giving us a few hours of your time. With Christmas season around the corner, our need is always great for volunteers. To learn more about our programs, to volunteer or to schedule a tour of our facilities, please contact Elaine McNeal at 772-978-0265 Ext 104 or elaine.mcneal@ uss.salvationarmy.org .

When Epic Missions Inc. started as a 501c3 non-profit in 2011, little did they know how big their impact would be on the Treasure Coast. The organization serves individuals and families in need, hungry, distressed, or at risk as well as the unemployed, sick or divorced.

Volunteers are housed at their missions’ base in Vero Beach, serving the community through Epic Missions for a week at a time. They provide housing, food, and coordinate all the community service projects for volunteers as they seek to renew hope and purpose for those hurting within the community.

Often, folks are just one bad decision away from ruining their lives forever. Epic Missions seeks to support families in trouble by helping them around the house, opening its facilities for teens from Hibiscus Children Center and volunteering over 160,000 hours since its inception in 2011. Their volunteers staff most of the nonprofits within our communities to help them perform their services on low budgets. This Fall, they started a new sports group for Grandparents raising Grandchildren. If you are interested in becoming involved, call Connie at (772) 663-2058. This service is designed to help support Grandparents and provide useful information on services available to them as they raise their Grandchildren. Epic Missions relies upon tax-deductible donations from the public to operate its programs. Find us at www.epicmissions.org.

Helping with special needs Did you know that one out of every five people in the U.S. has some form of disability? That total equates with almost 70 MILLION people that are in need of some form of assistance or additional income to support themselves and their families in their dayto-day living! A “disability” can be both visible and/or invisible. Webster’s Dictionary defines a disability as: “a lack of adequate power, strength, or physical or mental ability”, and “anything that disables or puts one at a disadvantage”. People with disabilities ARE at a disadvantage, but organizations like Easterseals Florida, Inc., located here in Vero Beach, are here to assist this ever-growing population with obtaining “gainful employment”, and establishing and maintaining a successful career, as well!

or counseling to achieve their employment/ career goals, and this is where Easterseals Florida steps in to provide guidance with a variety of skills including: resume preparation, transportation training, job-searching techniques, interview skills, follow-up, and on-the-job support. Easterseals Florida is part of the national organization of Easterseals, Inc., and as such, is a non-profit organization that is “committed to making major, positive, life-changing differences in the lives of people and families facing today’s disabilities.”

In conjunction with the Florida Division for Vocational Rehabilitation, (also in Vero Beach) Easterseals Florida works diligently to assist people with disabilities toward achieving their goals. Many individuals with disabilities need some form of guidance, and/

Easterseals is celebrating its centennial in 2019 and now offers a wide variety of services including hundreds of home and community-based services and supports that are categorized into five distinct support areas: Live, Learn, Work, Play, and Act. As part of our Work Support Areas: we offer everything from an Adult Day Training Program(located in Palm Bay) to Employment Services, and Supported Employment. For further information please visit our website at http://www.easterseals.com/florida/, call 1.877.507.3257, or send an e-mail to jjordan@fl.easterseals.com.

Anthony DeGeso from Sebastian has been a proud employee of Publix in Sebastian for one and a half years and according to his managers has been performing extremely well as a Front-End Clerk. Anthony was placed at Publix with the assistance of James Jordan, Employment Consultant for Easterseals Florida, and is hoping to transfer to a position in the bakery at Publix since he enjoys baking at home! Congratulations, and keep up the great work, Anthony!

Donnita Skinner from Fort Pierce recently returned to the workforce as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Renaissance Senior Living in Vero Beach. Donnita was placed in this position by James Jordan, Employment Consultant for Easterseals Florida and has been working there for almost one year. According to her managers, Donnita is a wonderful addition to the fine staff at Renaissance and she is well-loved by all the residents. Congratulations, and wishing you continued success, Donnita!

Restaurant Review:

Unique Mexican Themed Cuisine A lot is new at Blue Agave

By Susan Harris

Vero Beach’s Blue Agave is changng it up for season. There will be a new menu starting in October that will bring this 14th Avenue gem into a new era, according to the new general manager Jimena Fernandez. Here’s a sneak peek to get your taste buds going: Flat Iron steak with a special Blue Agave seasoning, seared to delightful tenderness, served over a Kale salad with fresh watermelon and a cilantro vinaigrette – it was delicious, delightful and delectable! Probably one of the most tender steaks I’ve ever had, and the salad was fresh with a shaved heart of palm and candied pumpkin seed. As advertised, freshly made with many layers of flavoring. Chef Jackson Rogers is a master at shaking things up and bringing a special verve and delight to the palate.

Fresh chips and habanero salsa

Photos by Scott Finney Another member of our party was hesitant but then decided to try the Fried Pork Belly Taco with Salsa Borracha. Good thing he did. This salsa is called the drunken salsa as it contains Tequila. Contains is an interesting word. Very little of that salsa was shared with the rest of the table. It came with pickled watermelon skin, pickled onion, and some crunchy toasted seeds. Our member ordered a raspberry Margarita with this and between us, not a drop was left on his plate or in his glass. (That’s always a good sign to me) Next was our fussiest eater. He enjoyed a pan-seared American Red Snapper served with Yucca Fries and roasted mixed vegetables, yum! The fish was topped with guacamole and a salsa habanero sauce – unforgettable. Let me just say that the sauces can be hot but they are delicious. The chilis are hand ground with the stems and seeds

Mexican Street Corn

removed by Blue Agave staff. Then they are charred and soaked. There had to be five or six different dishes of salsa on our table (by request) and everyone found their personal heat and taste level. I suggest asking questions and I bet Chef Jackson, from Virginia or the lovely Jimena from Argentina will come to your table and enthusiastically tell you about all the ingredients. Did I mention dessert and appetizers? Mexican Street Corn is a tasty appetizer with that authentic corn on the cob flavor tempered with some spices and toppings. A good way to start the meal and make your table happy. A hit with everyone. Dessert. Basically, we should have said no, but we didn’t. We were groaning but for the sake of the readers, we felt we had to try the luscious desserts. On the plus side, we did share. The bread pudding was all that it was said to be. And possibly more. Two people in the party consider themselves to be bread pudding experts and had a heated discussion on whether it was the best in town. Fresh homemade whipped cream, a brown bourbon glaze, dark chocolate, raisins and Mexican cinnamon give it a deeper more complex taste.

Have to add that there was also an aromatic apple empanada that caught my eye as it went by to another lucky table. Next time.

No-Kill Rescue Turns a Dream into a Reality H.A.L.O. had a vision of saving more lives by creating an environment where underdogs, those who are fearful, shy, under-socialized and behaviorally challenged can receive the care they need. Plans have been executed to begin the development of H.A.L.O.’s Enrichment Center, 12 years in the making, we are just around the corner from turning a dream into a reality. HALO’s Enrichment Center will operate as both an indoor training center and a spay & neuter clinic. This should be viewed as another large step forward in our commitment to the no-kill movement. We are determined to save as many lives as possible and help continue to decrease the number of lives being euthanized in our county. The training center will provide the space necessary for our trainers and volunteers to work with our shy and fearful underdogs, as well as work on basic obedience with our other animals. This new space will provide the large and shy breeds with a peaceful place to reside, an environment to learn and build trust, all designed to make them more adoptable faster so that we can save more lives each day!

The Spay & Neuter Clinic aims to not only help our rescues in residence but also our community at large. Our goal is to provide FREE spay & neuter, vaccine and microchip clinic services for as many as our funding allows so that together, we can fix the OOPS and make our county No Kill. Right now, things are in the preliminary stages, with land secured and building plans being prepared, so we are hopeful that the project commencement date set for construction will be January 2020. January of 2020 may seem far off, but it is just around the corner and we have lots to do! Thank you to all who support the No Kill movement and believe in HALO. We could not do it without you!

Please visit H.A.L.O.’s website for more information about our shelter, as well as our locations and hours. www.halorescuefl.org

A Home for Every Child Last year nearly 400,000 children were removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, and abandonment. 24,000 of these children live in Florida, and yes, it’s happening right in our backyard. Many of the children in our community are able to be placed with relatives and friends who are naturally involved in their families. But for others, they depend on a strong, caring, committed community to step forward on their behalf. 20 years ago, 4KIDS of South Florida, a faith-based foster care ministry was birthed in Broward County to engage churches, the business community and other community partners in solving the crisis these children face every day – not enough homes for children who desperately need them. Children were languishing in group homes, shelters and often sent to programs all over the State simply because there were not enough foster families to care for them. It was the belief that every child deserves and needs the hope provided by a caring, loving home, no matter what the issues their parents are facing. That belief became the driving force behind 4KIDS, and since that time 4KIDS has ensured that for 25,000 children in Florida this was no longer a concern. In 2013, the Treasure Coast faced a similar crisis. In response, 4KIDS began recruiting, training and supporting families opening their hearts and homes to our community’s hurting children. While we have made great strides over the years, serving over 375 children in 100 healing homes, the crisis continues. Each year over 600 children are removed from their homes in the Treasure Coast. Last year over 250 children were placed in foster care, however, there are only approximately 150 homes. Over 100 of our most vulnerable children, including sibling groups, were placed in shelters or group care, and over 40 children actually had to leave the Treasure Coast because there were not enough families to care for them.

Imagine being a young child, hurt and feeling abandoned, then being taken from everything familiar to you - family, home, school, teachers, friends, church, and placed in a completely different community to live with a group of children you have never met, who are just as scared and confused as you are. It’s a challenge that no child should have to face. 4KIDS remains steadfastly committed to finding A Home For Every Child because every child deserves the hope and healing that a compassionate, committed home brings. Our children need families in their own neighborhoods and communities to open their homes and hearts during the time of greatest crisis in their short lives. Families who will undoubtedly make a profound impact on their futures. Do you have room in your home and heart for them? If you would like more information about how you can help, please consider finding more about: • Becoming a Foster Family - call 772-206-0746 or email Foster@4KIDSTreasureCoast.org. • Volunteering to support our Foster Families by calling 772-419-8831 or email KathyD@4KIDSTreasureCoast.org • Giving to support our ministry or participate in our Clays4KIDS Sporting Clay Challenge October 20, 2018, at OK Corral Gun Club in Okeechobee, FL, call 772-4198831 or email AndrewWe@4KIDSTreasureCoast.org

Humble beginnings: Wild Thyme Catering (WTC) started nearly six years ago with a passion for delicious food. Though many things have changed over these last six years, the vision has stayed constant - their love for food and goal to make every event unique. Wild Thyme Catering provides catering services for all types of events --- from weddings to office luncheons, holiday parties, and non-profit gatherings. WTC has identified a need to partner with many local non-profit organizations that provide valuable services to the surrounding Treasure Coast communities. It started with just a couple organizations with food donations to places like The Hope for Families Center and The Source. This quickly grew as WTC became more active in the community through connections with the Indian River Chamber of Commerce, the Vero Beach Chamber of Commerce, and so many individuals that just loved their food and wanted them to succeed. Wild Thyme Catering now proudly supports a variety of organizations such as The Buggy Bunch, The Human Society, the VNA, Habitat for Humanity, The Veteran’s Council of IRC, The Women’s Refuge, and The Cultural Council. The contributions range from food donations of platters to complete meals. Other times they donate their staff labor to fundraising events. WTC also offer their facilities to host local networking meetings and workshops for organizations that might not have a physical location. Since 2017, WTC has donated over $38,000 in food and services to the Treasure Coast community. “With each donation or collaboration, I know that we are making Vero Beach a better place for so many people in need. We have experienced a steady growth the last six years and I want to give back to the place I call home”, says Travis Beckett the owner of Wild Thyme Catering.

Vero Beach Centennial Celebration The City of Vero Beach knows what it means to celebrate and their 100 years of becoming an incorporated city in Florida is at the top of their list. All activities recognizing this historic date will begin a year in advance, Oct. 2018 and continue until the Centennial Celebratory Crescendo on Oct. 26, 2019.

October 2018

A dedicated group of local residents have teamed together as one committee (CoChaired by City Clerk Tammy Bursick and Councilman Tony Young) to prepare a year of varied activities which will represent the city’s history, landmarks, ancestors, organizations, agriculture, education, transportation and the arts through the decades of technical, beautification and architectural advancements. This is an opportunity to share our history, our accomplishments and our people in a very memorable fashion.

Free Thanksgiving Meal Open to All at Pathway Church Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather together, enjoy a bountiful feast, and create warm memories. However, for those who do not have family nearby, or for those who are unable to prepare a meal themselves, the holiday can come and go with little fanfare. For the 11th year in a row, Pathway Church (formerly called First Church of God) is opening its doors to the community and serving a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, complete with scrumptious desserts and a loaf of bread to take home courtesy of Publix Supermarkets! The Thanksgiving meal will be served free of charge from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 22nd in the church’s sanctuary, located at 1105 58th Avenue, Vero Beach. Reservations are not required, and all are welcome to partake in the meal, regardless of religious affiliation. “We do this every year. It’s our tradition with my mom and brothers. It’s great being able to interact with others and be with other people,” said one grateful diner during Thanksgiving 2017. In addition to the food lovingly prepared (and served) by hundreds of volunteers, local musicians donate their time to provide live background music during the day, adding to the festive ambiance. For more information, call 772-562-2256 or visit www. pathwayvb.com.

Serving Thanksgiving meals with a smile last year were Kay England, Tammy Bursick, Ron McMillan, Richard Brust, Chris Partlow, Rosemary Gettleman, Rick Justo, Jessica McMillan, and Bridget McMillan.

Brent Graves puts the freshly-carved turkey in the warmer.

Becka Harrison provides music on the keyboard during the 2017 Thanksgiving gathering.

Nancy Thompson, and Anita and Jack Quinn serve with a smile.

Hands Across Vero By Rev. Dr. Joe LaGuardia I grew up in a large Italian family where I learned the value of community. We gathered every Sunday for dinner and had room for everyone to sit at the table. We celebrated our love for one another; and if someone offended someone else, we had the room to talk through our differences. Sometimes we fought, but our bickering never lasted long. At that table, I also learned how to listen and seek understanding. I learned how to negotiate with different personalities. I was inspired to collaborate. When I became a Baptist minister years later, I found my family values a natural fit for the churches and neighborhoods in which I worked. I always try to make a sacred space for others, to keep listening and understanding. I have collaborated with government agencies, non-profits, and faith communities of all stripes to encourage sustainable, supportive services for neighbors whom God called us to love.

Just last August, First Baptist Church of Vero Beach hosted the second Community Connections Lunch of the year. As a part of our church’s “Hands Across Vero ministry, the lunch brought together nearly 40 clergy, non-profit leaders, and community organizers across Vero Beach to network, build friendships, and partner together. Here at First Baptist, we want to foster conversations that matter and build friendships that make a difference. These luncheons help us reach that goal. Our city thrives on connections that are meaningful, and we are better people when we learn to work, walk, live, and talk together. I hope that Vero is a place where everyone can find a seat at the table. And my prayer is that our neighbors will be richly blessed by the sacred community we keep regardless of faith, political persuasions, or no faith at all.

Adoption Option Care

Care Net’s Adoption Option Program helps women and men understand their options in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

CARING ♥ COMPASSSIONATE ♥ CONFIDENTIAL

The Adoption Option program begins with basic decision-making to weigh each client’s options and to make a personalized adoption plan based on what is important. In most cases funds are available for material needs of pregnant women who choose an adoption plan for their baby, including, but not limited to: clothing, housing, medical care, food, utilities, etc. Care Net recognizes adoption as one life-affirming alternative to abortion. Care Net Pregnancy Center of IRC is not an adoption agency but provides multiple agency referrals at the client’s request. You can help care for a mother by simply switching your license plate. To make the switch, go to http://myfloridaspecialtyplate.com/choose-life.html

"Care Net is a place where any mother can feel safe and secure because they will always be there to help women through some of the hardest decisions in life." -Ashley, Adoption client

Tax Collector, Indian River County Commences Inaugural Kids Tag Art Program Carole Jean Jordan, Tax Collector, focused on bringing community partners to the table to support local students

Carole Jean Jordan says, “Kids Tag Art truly reflects the greatness of public-private partnership to benefit our local community. We’re excited to see so much interest in partnering with the Tax Collector’s Office on this project from local charities and businesses.” Kids Tag Art was created in Polk County and has expanded to include twenty-two participating counties in the 2018-2019 school year. Since its inception in 2006, the Florida Tax Collector’s Association reports the Kids Tag Art program has raised over $1 million in public/private partnership funds, has provided participation opportunities for over 30,000 students, and generated over 165,000 unique student-created tag designs across 300 schools statewide. The program fosters artistic expression from students while also teaching them about the significance of artistic work in both government and commerce. This program is designed for 5th-grade students, who are given a blank canvas to create their own specialty license plate. The students’ artwork is then made available for sale as front license plates, keychains, and other similar items and the monies

from these sales are returned as supplemental funding for their school’s art department. Each participating school will have a first and second place winner who will be featured in a traveling exhibit on display countywide. Public, private, and charter schools are invited to participate. “We appreciate the support of our major sponsor, the Live Like Cole Foundation, as well as Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation, Lauren’s Kids, Quality Health Care & Wellness Institute, Bay Street Pharmacy, Grant Street Group, BankUnited, and CenterState Bank,” Jordan said. For more information about Kids Tag Art, visit www.irctax.com/kidstagart or please call 772-226-1745.

On Nov. 18, the sleepy fishing community of Sebastian, Florida will be filled with triathletes of all ages and skill levels as Capt Hiram’s Resort hosts its Sixth Annual River Challenge Triathlon. The race is a fantastic opportunity to bring the family and participate in an exciting community event benefiting one of our most valuable local treasures, the Indian River Lagoon. “This race holds a special place in my heart. It is a mini-triathlon, dreamed up six years ago as a fun way to contribute to keeping our Indian River Lagoon in good health. We believe it is a fight worth fighting and that it really should be a priority for everyone who enjoys the water and the animals that live in it. We have introduced countless people to our little stretch of paradise through this race, many of whom have become strong activists for our cause. We are proud of our accomplishments so far, but there is still so much more to be done. If I want to be part of the solution, get involved locally. The Capt. Hiram’s River Challenge is a perfect way to get started,” said Will Collins, President of Capt Hiram’s Resort. Growing rapidly in participation and fundraising, the River Challenge was created to raise awareness and benefit the overall health of the Indian River Lagoon. Our lagoon faces serious issues, including diminishing seagrass and populations of sea life, which are essential to its ecosystem. Careful monitoring and management are vital to the lagoon’s future.

The River Challenge has been highly successful, raising $15,000 over the past five years. Proceeds directly benefit the lagoon and are distributed to key environmental groups including CCA, the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida (www.ccaflorida.org), ORCA, the Ocean Research and Conservation Association (www.teamorca.org), and ELC, the Environmental Learning Center (www. discoverelc.org). For 2018, Capt Hiram’s focus is on executing a single-use-plastic free race. Eliminating water bottles, plastic cups, and styrofoam plates are just a few of the improvements we are making this year in our race in addition to incorporating these changes throughout our resort. Part of a fun-filled, family day, the race will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Capt Hiram’s Resort. It includes a 1/4 mile (400 meters) swim, a 12 mile (19 kilometers) bike ride, and a three mile (five kilometers) run. The course takes racers through the charming City of Sebastian, proudly showcasing its picturesque waterfront.

A post-race party at Capt Hiram’s Sandbar Beach Club will immediately follow, complete with live music, brunch, cocktails, and an awards ceremony. To participate visit the Capt Hiram’s event pagewww.hirams.com/triathlon. The River Challenge would not be possible without the generous support of its sponsors, including Bob’s Bicycle Shop, Dale Sorensen Real Estate, the Vero Beach Cobras, Capp Custom Builders, Serenity Solutions, MN Worldwide, Perfect Stix, Natalie’s Orange Juice, and Sandpiper Pest. Ben Elliott, Store Manager of Bob’s Bicycle Shop says they look forward and are honored to be part of the Capt Hiram’s River Challenge Triathlon. “This is such a huge opportunity to engage with the community to support this very worthwhile cause to help protect the Indian River and all its resources. We also enjoy the personal interaction with everyone involved while promoting outdoor activities and a healthier lifestyle. See everyone there!”

EXCELLENCE IS NOT A ONE TIME ACT, IT IS A HABIT

Champion Home Health Care has won “BEST HOME HEALTH CARE PROVIDER FOR 2018” making it our fifth consecutive year, because we demand excellence in the work of our staff on a daily basis. As a reminder to all in the medical profession, of the dangers of not demanding excellence in what we do, below is an excerpt from a legal deposition given by Champion owner Tom Michaels after the death of his mother. Chronology Of Events on December 20th, 2000 (Events in proper sequence, times approximated) 8am- spoke to two resident doctors assigned to my mother (one oriental and other ?) told them I preferred not to have Cat Scan performed on mother today. Informed them that my mother is highly allergic and I do not want to risk it. Both residents agreed, and said the only reason my mother is being sent for this test is because she had diarrhea and they want to be sure she does not have a colon infection; however the diarrhea is getting better, so they agree we do not have to do the test right now. I leave the hospital at 8:45am for work.(no authorization for this test signed)

During the afternoon Dr. Kenneth re-orders the Cat Scan test. My sister is told on the telephone by Dr. that they will not give our mother any Iodine. Mother is kept NPO all afternoon preparing for the test. 6pm-arrive back at hospital. Mother is feeling good. Wants to sit up in chair and have watermelon. Nurse Nala says she can’t eat until after her test, and it is better for her to stay in bed since it will be easier for her to be transferred to the stretcher and wheeled down for the test. After the test she can sit up and have watermelon if wanted. 6:30pm- Nurse Nala brings fluid for my mother to drink. She confirms to me that this contains no Iodine. Instructed by nurse to give my mother 1 cup every ½ hour until 8pm, then give the final cup right before the test. 6:40pm- Mother starts to drink first cup. After first swallow, mother tells me she tastes Iodine. I read label on bottle which indicated: GASTROGRAFIN – DO

NOT ADMINISTER IF ALLERGIC TO IODINE. I stop giving mother drink. Mother informs me that Dr. asked her during his rounds today “exactly what happens to you when you are exposed to Iodine?” Mother told him about her allergic attacks. 6:45pm- Show nurses Nala and Maura label on the bottle indicating: DO NOT ADMINISTER IF ALLERGIC TO IODINE. Both nurses state “they don’t believe that it contains any Iodine.” Nurse Nala says that she will call my mothers doctor to confirm that there is no Iodine in this drink. (call sister to have her inquire about solution also) 7pm- Nurse Nala confirms to me that she “spoke to my mothers doctor and there is no Iodine in this drink, the reason why the label has a warning notice is because it is a two part solution and only the injection part has Iodine but the drink alone has no Iodine.” 7:05pm- Speak with sister, She was also told by female internist on mothers team and nursing station nurse, that this drink has no Iodine. Nurse brings Crystal Lite Ice Tea mix to camouflage the taste of the liquid so my mother can drink it. Mother is thirsty because on NPO all day, and drinks the first cup. 7:30pm- Mother feels nausea, but drinks second cup. Nurse says that nausea is a common reaction. 7:40pm- Mother starts to spit up drink and vomit (continues to vomit until taken down for test). Nurse asks that she try to drink a little more. 8pm- Mother drinks third cup. Nurse Nala says that three cups will be enough since my mother was feeling nausea. 8:10pm- Nurse says we should proceed to have mother taken down for test since she seems anxious and is getting a rapid heart rate.

8:15 to 8:25pm- Escort brings mother to Cat Scan in basement level. When arrive at Cat scan I tell the Radiologist (male with blonde hair) that my mother looks like she is having an allergic reaction, she is starting to breathe rapidly. The Radiologist tells me “she can not be having an allergic reaction from what she was given to drink, she must just be nervous.” The Radiologist gives my mother oxygen to breathe while she is waiting. I ask the Radiologist to speed up the process so I can bring my mother back to her room to have her examined. The Radiologist responds “I just have one other patient before her”. 8:35pm- Mother tells me “This is not working” I ask my mother what is not working? Mother responds “At least I laughed”. I ask mother what does she mean, and I get no response. I tell the Cat Scan receptionist (elderly black lady) to call for an escort for my mother to take her back to her room, she is not feeling well. Receptionist tells me “I can only call for an escort if the Radiologist tells me to”. 8:45pm- I find Radiologist and tell him that we need to get my mother back to her room since she is having an allergic reaction. The Radiologist still does not think my mother is having an allergic reaction and says “I will take her in now while we call for an escort”. 8:50pm- Radiologists (blonde male and tall black male) won’t let me in room with mother while they are doing the Cat Scan test. While mother is in room with Radiologists, I ask receptionist “Did you call for an escort for my mother”. She refuses, and says “we must wait until after she finishes her test”. EXCELLENCE...

(Continued rom previous page)

9:10pm- Finish test – Calls for escort. 9:25pm Escort Arrives. Radiologists won’t let mother leave with OXYGEN tank and STATES “The oxygen must stay in Cat Scan since that is our oxygen tank”. They disconnect my mother from the oxygen and allow the escort to take my mother back to her unit. 9:30pm- I notice in elevator, mothers breathing is very rapid and shallow. She has also developed a rash on both legs. 9:35pm- We arrive back on unit. I run to nursing station and tell nurse Nala that my mother is in distress, bring her back to mothers room, and show her mothers breathing, and rash on legs. Nurse agrees my mother must be having an allergic reaction, and calls for House Staff Doctors. Nurse takes my mothers pulse and blood pressure and tells me “this is not good”. I go to nursing station to have the unit clerk beep my mothers Doctor, Kenneth . 9:45pm- House Staff Doctors arrive (Dr ? and oriental Doctor ?) I tell them my mother needs Benadryl, she is having an allergic reaction to Iodine. They tell me they are not sure she is having an allergic reaction and they do not administer Benadryl. They continue to take pulse and blood pressure and hook up mother to a heart monitor. I go to nursing station to page Dr. Kenneth again and call sister to have her do the same. 9:55pm- House Staff Doctors agree to administer Benadryl by injection.

10:05pm- House Staff Doctors administer additional Benadryl by Intravenous drip. Mothers eyes are starting to dilate. Staff Doctors ask mother her name. Mother responds “Margaret Macaluso”. Staff Doctors ask mother Do You know where you are? Mother responds “ABC Medical center”. 10:10pm- House Staff Doctors call for crash cart. 10:15pm- Crash cart team starts arriving. I tell them my mother is not having a heart attack she is having an allergic reaction to Iodine. The crash cart head Doctor orders me to leave the room. I go to nurses station to call father to see what mother was given when she had a severe allergic reaction to shell fish during their honeymoon. While at nurses station, sister calls to find out status of mother. Doctor Kenneth also calls nurses station. Crash cart head Doctor won’t take Doctor Kenneth call and says “I don’t have time to speak with her doctor” sends first year intern to “keep her doctor busy”. First year intern tries to walk messages back and forth from nursing station to crash cart team. 10:25pm- Approximately 15 crash cart staff in mothers room, hear head Doctor call for a surgical airway. I am standing outside mothers room and call in “she has no platelets!” Head Doctor instructs staff to close door to mothers room so I can not see in. 10:40pm- Surgeon walks out of mothers room to ask me how are you doing? I respond, “I am fine, how is my mother doing?” I do not get an answer. 10:55pm- Hear head doctor say I will call this code in 5 minutes.

11:00pm- Mothers door opens, hear head doctor say in a loud voice “what type of cancer did Mrs. Macaluso have anyway?” There is no response, since my mother did not have cancer. As head doctor walks out of room he extends his hand for me to shake. I refuse, and tell him “go back in that room and revive my mother, it was just an allergic reaction not a heart attack”. He responds, “I can’t, she has bled from every orifice”. 11:05pm- I try to enter room and am told wait until we clean her up. I call sister to tell her “It didn’t work”.

11:20pm- Remaining staff leave mothers room with canisters of mopped up blood. I enter room, kiss mother on the forehead and tell her “I am so sorry”. I pack up mothers belongings. Kiss her again and say a prayer. 11:45pm- Father is on phone in the nurses station., wants to know how mother is doing. I tell him we don’t know yet, and will speak with him later. I leave hospital with mothers belongings. Pick up car in parking garage and drive to sisters house to go with her to inform our father that our mother has died.
