Autumn Detoxification

T

By Maggie Batt

he Autumn Equinox kicks off the beginning of the season when the Sun moves into Libra. On this day, there is equal daylight and darkness. The days begin to get shorter; the nights also become cooler. The leaves on the trees change color, and we’re reminded of harvest time. Autumn is an excellent time to let go of old patterns, like the falling leaf that surrenders to the wind.

In this season we will nourish and detoxify the LUNGS and LARGE INTESTINE. Your lungs are your first line of defense against unhealthy air; they hold the key to respiration. When you’re relaxed, you breathe approximately fifteen times per minute. It’s always best to protect them from cold and damp weather by keeping your chest, neck, head and feet warm.

Every function of your body relies on the oxygen intake of the lungs. Your lungs need to be able to eliminate carbon dioxide. It’s essential for your lungs to have good quality air that is clean, moist, warm and rich in oxygen. When your lungs aren’t functioning p r o p e r l y, y o u r body accumulates heat, propelling other health issues into motion, resulting in poor circulation, night sweats, excessive perspiration, and fatigue. Your respiratory tract, if damaged, can greatly affect t he qua lit y of your skin. Avoid pollutants, especially cigarettes. During this time of year, it’s important to keep your lungs lubricated and warm. The morning air has the most oxygen and is said to be the best time to meditate. 10 september 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Equally important to your health this time of year is the large intestine. It is divided into three parts: The caecum, where your appendix is attached; colons—ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid; and the rectum. When the large intestine is constipated your skin gets rashes, acne and eczema. We carry 7-10 pounds of encrusted fecal matter. Backed up waste creates a toxic state that shows up as bloating, gas, headaches and arthritic symptoms. Diets rich in sugar, flour, dairy products, alcohol, caffeine, and the Pill can aggravate your gut. Try taking a teaspoon of ground flax seeds in water daily to keep your gut regular. You get the added benefit of the cancer fighting Omega’s from the flax. A daily probiotic is also good to increase your good bacteria. Always take a probiotic with food. Enzymes like papaya tablets also assist in the assimilation of rich food and meats. Anytime you are not eating raw food, you need a digestive enzyme. Take enzymes after meals and never with your probiotic. Try this breathing technique to get more oxygen to the lungs and balance the body’s masculine and feminine hemispheres.

he world is different today. Children used to roam around in packs creating their own imaginative play and exploring the world. Studies show that today children are mostly occupied in three ways: watching television, playing video games and taking classes. The results are now coming into focus: Due to the lack of unstructured, self-directed, imaginative play, children less able to develop a critical cognitive skill called executive function. A central element of this skill is good self-regulation which allows kids to control their emotions and behavior, resist impulses, and exert self-control and discipline. A 2001 study replicated a study that had been conducted in the late 1940s in which researchers asked children 3, 5 and 7 to do certain exercises including standing perfectly still. The 3-year olds could not stand still at all, the 5-year olds could stand for about three minutes and the 7-year olds could stand still pretty much as long as the researchers asked. In the 2001study the results were very different with the 5-year olds acting at the level of the 3-year olds and the 7-year olds barely able to stand as long as the 5-year olds in the 1940s. Self-regulation is very important and essential for successful schooling. Poor executive function leads to high dropout rates, drug use and crime. Good executive function is a better predictor of success in school than a child’s IQ. When children are engaged in make believe play they talk to themselves about what they’re going to do and how they’re going to do it. This “private speech” has been shown in many studies to predict executive function capability. Adults also use this “private speech” to overcome obstacles, master cognitive and social skills and to manage emotions. The more structured the play, the more children’s private speech declines. When children spend their time on lessons, sports leagues and commercial toys their imaginative play is inhibited and they don’t get a chance to police themselves. Children who can engage in complex makebelieve play have been found to clean up after the play with greater willingness. Despite the evidence that is accumulating about the benefits of self-directed, make-believe

Loss of Play, play, children’s, even young children’s, play is in decline. Dorothy Singer, a Yale psychological researcher, states that teachers and school administrators just don’t see the value of this type of play. Today the emphasis is on testing so teachers are forced to start earlier and earlier to drill children in basic academic fundamentals. Play is viewed as a waste of time. In this rush to protect children, to enrich them with classes and to stimulate them with skill-building, we have devalued and cast aside Would you like to become a sponsor? Waldorf N ews

Old-Fashioned Play Builds Serious Skills By ALIX SPIEGEL On October 3, 1955, the Mickey Mouse Club debuted on television. As we all now know, the show quickly became a cultural icon, one of those phenomena that helped define an era. What is less remembered but equally, if not more, important, is that another transformative cultural event happened that day: h e Mattel toy company began advertising a gun called the “Thunder Burp.” I know — who’s ever heard of the Thunder Burp? Well, no one. The reason the advertisement is significant is because it marked the first time that any toy company had attempted to peddle merchandise on television outside of the Christmas season. Until 1955, ad budgets at toy companies were minuscule, so the only time they could afford to hawk their wares on TV was during Christmas. But then came Mattel and the Thunder Burp, which, according to Howard Chudacoff, a cultural historian at Brown University, was a kind of historical watershed. Almost overnight, children’s play became focused, as never before, on things — the toys themselves. “It’s interesting to me that when we talk about play today, the first thing that comes to mind are toys,” says Chudacoff. “Whereas when I would think of play in the 19th century, I would think of activity rather than an object.”

Chudacoff’s recently published history of child’s play argues that for most of human history what children did when they played was roam in packs large or small, more or less unsupervised, and engage in freewheeling imaginative play. They were pirates and princesses, aristocrats and action heroes. Basically, says Chudacoff, they spent most of their time doing what looked like nothing much at all. “They improvised play, whether it was in the outdoors… or whether it was on a street corner or somebody’s back yard,” Chudacoff says. “They improvised their own play; they regulated their play; they made up their own rules.” But during the second half of the 20th century, Chudacoff argues, play changed radically. Instead of spending their time in autonomous shifting make-believe, children were supplied with ever more specific toys for play and predetermined scripts. Essentially, instead of playing pirate with a tree branch they played Star Wars with a toy light saber. Chudacoff calls this the commercialization and co-optation of child’s play — a trend which begins to shrink the size of children’s imaginative space. But commercialization isn’t the only reason imagination comes under siege. In the second half of the 20th century, Chudacoff says, parents became increasingly concerned about safety, and were driven to create play environments that were secure and could not be penetrated by threats of the outside world. Karate classes, gymnastics, summer camps — these create safe environments for children, Chudacoff says. And they also do something more: for middle-class parents increasingly worried about achievement, they offer to enrich a child’s mind.

Change in Play, Change in Kids

Clearly the way that children spend their time has changed. Here’s the issue: A growing number of psychologists believe that these changes in what children do has also changed kids’ cognitive and emotional development. It turns out that all that time spent playing make-believe actually helped children develop a critical cognitive skill called executive function. Executive function has a number of different elements, but a central one is the ability to selfwww.tampabaywellness.com

regulate. Kids with good self-regulation are able to control their emotions and behavior, resist impulses, and exert self-control and discipline. We know that children’s capacity for self-regulation has diminished. A recent study replicated a study of self-regulation first done in the late 1940s, in which psychological researchers asked kids ages 3, 5 and 7 to do a number of exercises. One of those exercises included standing perfectly still without moving. The 3-year-olds couldn’t stand still at all, the 5-year-olds could do it for about three minutes, and the 7-year-olds could stand pretty much as long as the researchers

who are able to manage their feelings and pay attention are better able to learn. As executive function researcher Laura Berk explains, “Selfregulation predicts effective development in virtually every domain.”

asked. In 2001, researchers repeated this experiment. But, psychologist Elena Bodrova at MidContinent Research for Education and Learning says, the results were very different. “Today’s 5-year-olds were acting at the level of 3-year-olds 60 years ago, and today’s 7-year-olds were barely approaching the level of a 5-year-old 60 years ago,” Bodrova explains. “So the results were very sad.” Sad because self-regulation is incredibly important. Poor executive function is associated with high dropout rates, drug use and crime. In fact, good executive function is a better predictor of success in school than a child’s IQ. Children

“In fact, if we compare preschoolers’ activities and the amount of private speech that occurs across them, we find that this self-regulating language is highest during make-believe play,” Berk says. “And this type of self-regulating language… has been shown in many studies to be predictive of executive functions.” And it’s not just children who use private speech to control themselves. If we look at adult use of private speech, Berk says, “we’re often using it to surmount obstacles, to master cognitive and social skills, and to manage our emotions.” Unfortunately, the more structured the play,

www.tampabaywellness.com

The Importance of Self-Regulation According to Berk, one reason make-believe is such a powerful tool for building self-discipline is because during make-believe, children engage in what’s called private speech: They talk to themselves about what they are going to do and how they are going to do it.

the more children’s private speech declines. Essentially, because children’s play is so focused on lessons and leagues, and because kids’ toys increasingly inhibit imaginative play, kids aren’t getting a chance to practice policing themselves. When they have that opportunity, says Berk, the results are clear: Self-regulation improves. “One index that researchers, including myself, have used… is the extent to which a child, for example, cleans up independently after a freechoice period in preschool,” Berk says. “We find that children who are most effective at complex make-believe play take on that responsibility with… greater willingness, and even will assist others in doing so without teacher prompting.” Despite the evidence of the benefits of imaginative play, however, even in the context of preschool young children’s play is in decline. According to Yale psychological researcher Dorothy Singer, teachers and school administrators just don’t see the value. “Because of the testing, and the emphasis now that you have to really pass these tests, teachers are starting earlier and earlier to drill the kids in their basic fundamentals. Play is viewed as unnecessary, a waste of time,” Singer says. “I have so many articles that have documented the shortening of free play for children, where the teachers in these schools are using the time for cognitive skills.” It seems that in the rush to give children every advantage — to protect them, to stimulate them, to enrich them — our culture has unwittingly compromised one of the activities that helped children most. All that wasted time was not such a waste after all.

“Run Outside and Play”

I can still hear my mother urging me out of the house and into the outdoors when I was growing up in rural Alabama. That’s what parents did back then, told their children to go play and stop whining or fighting with their brothers and sisters. There is wisdom in those words that parents today can heed. Yes, we live in Florida where it’s too hot to even breathe outside, no, kids can’t just run off across the pasture to the woods and yes, everyone is scared of “stranger danger.” But Continued on page 14 Tampa Bay Wellness • september 2013 13

feature these excuses are not good enough. Children need a great deal of time in nature that they’re not getting today. Some think it’s enough if children just watch nature programs on television. No bugs, no dirt, no danger that way. But also no fresh air, no sun, no running around, no exploring, no imagination. So, first of all, unplug the TV drug, the IPAD drug, the video game drug and any other electronic device that has captured the minds and souls of the kid population. As long as children can sit back and be entertained, they will not develop their capacities for entertaining themselves. That’s another difference from my generation. I was not driven around from one activity to an-

way around and is ample enough for some real building and digging to go on, do what we have done in the kindergarten play yard at Suncoast Waldorf School. Collect stumps and set them in a large circle. You can tie them together to keep them from falling over, but the sand, too, will provide stabilization. Fill with sand. You can have a load of sand dumped and you can use a wheel barrow to haul it to the sandbox area. (One of our parents had the means for hauling huge bags full of sand from Home Depot.) It is important to put the sand box under a tree for shade. If you don’t have a tree, build a shade over the box using a type of sun screen over posts. You can improvise by stretching chicken wire over the top of well dug posts and

from one to the other, and enjoying the intact bales. Then, gradually, the hay is pulled out and soft piles of the hay provide other varieties of play which include tossing it up into the air. When I was growing up, building play houses was a central part of our play. We raided garbage dumps for these building treasures. Parents living in urban areas have to help create these loose pieces for children but the rewards will be well worth the effort. Imagine creating a back yard with little paths that circle around lush plantings filled with blooming flowers. Instead of one large green lawn that must be constantly mowed, mysterious and inviting areas underneath small trees and shrubs are created. Stepping stones can be laid through a

one of the most helpful activities of all — children’s self-directed, make-believe play.

other. (For many years we didn’t even own a car.) If I wanted to play with my friends, Rachel or Judy, I had to walk to their houses, possibly a mile or two away. My mother did not have time to worry about my social life. But what if you’re in the middle of a suburban development and there are no woods for escape? That’s why I’m writing this piece—to give you some ideas on how you can turn your own backyard into an enticing place for children to play. There are several musts for a backyard play area: a big sand box, some “loose pieces” to build with, lots of interesting plantings under which to make houses, a digging area, some water, a rope swing. First, the sand box. Please, none of the plastic turtle sand boxes. They’re too small and don’t lend themselves to the kind of play that can stretch into hours. If you don’t have the means to build a sandbox, one that has a bench all the 14 september 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

then spreading Spanish moss over the wire. Our sand box at school sits under several oak trees. The nice thing about using stumps is that the children can practice their balance while walking around the uneven stumps. But another plus is the natural beauty of the stumps and how pleasing it is just to look at them and touch them. What is even more pleasing is to watch the children play in this sand area and to see how engaged they are, how they create their worlds, how they don’t need adults to tell them what to do, how they learn to play together. They will play contentedly for long stretches of time. Give them a source of water they can haul to the sand and the play takes an even more interesting turn. It is important to cover the sand box area with a large tarp that you can weight down with rocks in order to keep out cats or dogs. When it rains the tarp will catch rain water and the children can have more fun splashing in the deep puddles. Now for the loose pieces. By this I mean having things on hand that children can use in their play or building. This would be things such as smooth planks, stumps, bamboo poles, cut palmettos or palm fronds, concrete blocks, rope, old sheets or table cloths—just use your imagination and you’ll know what to gather up. One of the most satisfying of loose pieces to have around are several hay bales. First, the children play on them as they are, pushing them around, jumping

flower garden. Recently, a parent at our school built a little arched wooden bridge that crosses the herb and flower garden in the play yard. Find one area in your yard that is available to the children for digging. Digging in the earth is different from digging in a sand box. Children encounter living nature and their imaginations take them all the way to China. They need real, child sized shovels, certainly not those useless plastic ones. Add some water, and one has real mud for making pies or creating lakes and rivers. If you have a strong tree branch, hang a good rope swing. It can be a single rope with a knot or a circular board at the end or a double rope with a real swing seat. The swing of a rope swing is so much more satisfying that the short swings that metal swing sets give. I hope these suggestions will inspire you to provide the kind of back yard that children deserve. You will be released from your role as cruise director as the children’s imaginations are sparked into action. Then, you’ll be able to say as my mother did, “Run outside and play now and don’t come back in until I call you for supper!” Barbara Bedingfield is Founding Director of Suncoast Waldorf School in Palm Harbor, Florida where self-directed play is an essential part of the rhythm of every day for children in preschool through the 5th grade. The kindergarten is play-based so that children have their precious years of early childhood to grow and develop healthfully. www.tampabaywellness.com

Lies Exposed! Common Diet Myths Revealed

This month we will look at a few of the realities and facts about Myth #3 Myth #3: Artificial Sweeteners are better than sugar. Reality: Artificial Sweeteners are much worse than sugar! Here are the facts: Fact #1 Artificial Sweeteners are man-made chemicals that are not food! According to the definition of the word Food in the dictionary, anything that does not assist in, or contribute to the rebuilding and repair of your body is not food by definition! Fact #2 Artificial Sweeteners are dangerous to your health. They contain highly toxic carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), and bleach. Bleach is a neurotoxin – it damages your brain and your nerves. When exposed to temperatures above 86 degrees F, the main ingredient in many artificial sweeteners is changed into formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is embalming fluid! (Your normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees F. Even if you are not putting them in

your 150 degree F hot coffee or tea, do you see the problem here?) Formaldehyde is stored in your fat cells – including the 30% of your BRAIN that is made of fat. These ingredients all damage your Liver Function, which will, as an effect, cause weight gain! We have six hormones that burn fat in our bodies. All six fat-burning hormones are processed through your LIVER! Artificial sweeteners make you GAIN WEIGHT and CAUSE DISEASE because they stress your liver. They also trigger intense cravings for sugar and other simple carbohydrates like bread and pasta for example. (We go into more detail on the crucial role of your liver and fat-burning in our booklets and trainings.) This is why we call artificial sweeteners the Rainbow Poisons (pink, blue, yellow and green packets). Given their use in processed foods, especially “diet” foods, it’s no wonder nearly 75% of the US population is considered either overweight or obese! These are everywhere, including MOST chewing gums and toothpaste! (Chewing gum is one of the worst offenders – you low dose

on poison for hours – purchase gum from your local health food store, and check ingredients.) The next time you pick a food item; read the ingredients label and make sure this toxic chemic

Energy for Life Are you chronically tired? Have you even been diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder like Lupus, Fibromyalgia, or Rheumatoid Arthritis? These are illnesses in which the body attacks itself, and our cells don’t recognize our other cells as “me.” Western medicine doesn’t have a good explanation for this, and can’t help much. Typically, doctors tell patients to “learn to live with it.” Consider this. When we aren’t living our soul’s plan for our life, our souls “check out” to some degree. “Nothing’s going on here I want to do.” As the soul pulls out of the body, the “me” leaves, and auto-immune disorders begin. This is a wonderful realization! As soon as we begin to focus on what’s really happening – that we aren’t living the life our soul intends us to live – we can begin to heal. This is exactly what the Lightworkers Healing Method does – help people align with their soul plans, and live the life their souls intend them to live. As we realign with our soul plan, chronic diseases heal. In an “impossibly” short time, we can once again be vibrantly healthy and move into JOY. Classes forming now; distance learning and Webinar options available. Dance and Live in your Power! Arielle Giordano

Are you a victim or a take charge person? Do you feel empowered or disempowered in your life? Would you like to be empowered and know that you have the ability to change your life? Life brings a cornucopia and variety of choices and experiences. We can relate and identify these as challenges or opportunities. Some experiences we like and some we dislike. Experiences can bring joy and fulfillment or they can bring pain and disappointment. Interpreting our experiences can be with the freedom of choice. We can choose to perceive life experiences as a negative or positive, as a growth challenge, or choose to deny and ignore it. Standing in our power means that we are aware of being fully responsible for our choices, experiences, and lives. The empowering realization of truth lies in every situation and experience which has an element of goodness within it. Goodness comes in the form of a golden morsel of knowledge and truth. Bering responsible means being empowered in the way we live our lives. We can choose to live as a victim and have pity parties or we can choose to live in the aliveness of knowing that we are responsible human beings. We are in control of our choices and our lives. How do we move from the perspective of being a victim to living in our power? We take baby steps on the path to becoming responsible human beings. We know that we can choose to step into our power. This means following what we know in our hearts. This may mean choosing somethin that we do not want to swee happen on some level, do not agree with, or do not like. Choosing powerfully may cause depp pain, but as empowered human beings, we do it anyway. AS empowered human beings, we make choices based on our knowing at a very deep level the next steps on our journey. Yes, consequences occur with each choice. Yes, we pay a price for each choice.Every choice brings a consequence. 18 september 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

We powerfully choose to experience all of our choices and consequences.

The Dance of Empowerment and Powerful LIving Steps on moving from being a victim to being a responsible and powerful human being: 1. Be Aware Know that you created all of your life challenges, experiences and lessons. 2. Be Responsible. Responsibility lies in the eye of the beholder. Know that you are responsible for all of your experiences, choices and consequences. 3. Avoid the blame and shame game at all costs. Know that there is no one to blame and this is not about feeling shame or playing games. 4. Be proactive instead of reactive Put yourself into your life instead of just letting life happen. Do something each day to achieve a goal, solve a problem or resolve and issue.. 5. Experience your Power Know that you are a powerful being. It is up to you to achieve a power balance. Do not abuse your power or ignore it. Find your inner balance of power and choose to move forward in it. 6. Move Forward Take steps each day toward letting go of the attitude of victimization. 7. Beyond Sunscreen A

t a swim meet? A lifeguard can’t save you from UV radiation. Drive a minivan or SUV? You may feel you have more protection for the family in an accident, but air bags don’t inflate when UV rays come crashing through your windows. Attending games at a baseball or recreational field? The players have protective game gear (which ironically covers most of them up), but are you as a spectator aware of your opposing team? UV radiation takes advantage of your weak plays. Everyone should enjoy an active and outdoor lifestyle BUT make good choices to stay safe in the sun. Take advantage of wearing a stylish hat and sunglasses for protection purposes! You can definitely find fashionable sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. UV radiation can not only damage the skin on your eyelids but also the cornea, lens and other parts of the eye. Look for sunglasses that provide UV protection details. Wear sunglasses even if you are in the shade because your eyes can still be exposed to UV rays which reflect off of buildings, roadways and other surfaces/objects. As far as fashionable hats, nothing says classic like an oversized wide-brimmed pool hat. Two more options to consider are a basic baseball cap or ball caps with flaps that shield the ears, neck and side of the face. Spending a lot of time in the car? Yes, UV rays penetrate windows. In fact, more than 50% of skin cancers are found on the left side (driver’s side) of the body. Look into window tinting or clear window film screens (especially for your side windows), which block approximately 99 percent of UVA and UVB rays without reducing visibility. Do you know about sun-protective clothing? They come with a UPF rating (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). This option is very appealing to kids who resist sunscreen applications. My first impression on utilizing this option was that I would get hot and irritable but to my surprise, most sun-protective clothing is light-weight, moisture-wicking, quick-drying and highly breathable. Brands that are respectable: Sun Precautions, Outdoor Research, Triple J and REI.

Simple Reminders: Trees are our friends. If a tree is around, seek shade. No options for shade? Make your own. Umbrellas are not just for rainy days. Finally, limit the amount of time you spend outside during peak UV hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm. Remember a hazy or overcast day does not protect you from UV exposure. UV is invisible radiation, not visible light and can penetrate clouds.

An Ayurvedic Approach

| Summer Pita & Menstrual Disorders

By Dr. Iyer

A

yurveda has explained in detail the seasonal cycle of doshas. The tridoshas vata, pitta, and kapha are the three energies governing all functions of the body. Pita is made of fire and water, the energy of transformation and conversion. It is all sharp, hot light moving liquid and has an acidic smell. Pita gets aggravated by the following: summer season, eating very sour salty pungent food, too much yogurt, sour juices, junk food, smoking, alcohol, outdoor activities in the afternoon, exposure to sun, anger irritability, sexual indulgence, excessive competition and intellectual stimulation. The human body is a mirror of our physical surrounding, the spaces we inhabit, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the heat of the sun and the earth underneath our feet, is each an example of the physiological structures outside our bodies, which are reflected in our own elemental composition called panchmahabhutas. The herbs are also pancha bhuomtic, meaning they also contain different combinations of all five elements. Ayurveda also recognizes six tastes, sweet, sour, salty, pungent astringent and bitter. Pita is aggravated by pungent sour & salt and pita is pacified by sweet astringent and bitter. Two energy principals hot and cold govern all activities in the universe. As the earth travels around the sun in its orbits, the north-south position of the sun changes over the course of the year, due to the changing orientation of the earth tilted rotation axes with respect to sun. During accumulation period called adana period between winter solstice and summer solstice there is a predominance of “sun or heating” principal (pita energy). Due to increasing, heat, hot and dry quality increases, we become more active. The tissues (dhatus) breakdown (catabolism) to create more energy so dhatus deplete and immune system becomes little weak. Due to changes in the season, doshas go through the cycle of accumulation, aggravation and palliation. Pita gets accumulated in May to June and aggravation in July to Aug with palliation in September and October so we get Pita aggravation in the summer from June to mid-September.

Seasonal Routine For Summer

As mentioned summer is Pita season, summer represents the hot, bright, sharp qualities of pitta. So our diet and lifestyle should be modified to balance this energy. The diet should be cool and bland to counter Pita’s hot, light and sharp qualities. Add more fruit and vegetables to the diet. Avoid hot, spicy, and sour and pungent tastes. Emphasize 20 september 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

sweet astringent and bitter tastes which palliate pitta. Avoid alcohol, working in a hot kitchen provokes pitta so cook your meals in the morning. Example of sweet food items are complex carbohydrates., sweet fruits, grains , root vegetables like potatoes, beans , sugar, honey, milk, cheeses, oils and meats. Example of astringent is onion, the peel of a fruit, turmeric, and golden seal, leafy green vegetables, blue berries, cranberries, and beans etc. The examples of bitter tastes are leafy vegetables, aloe, golden seal, fenugreek, black tea and bitter melon. When Pitta is aggravated Agni tends to become too sharp, digests food quickly, digests food that is taken in a large quantity or taken frequently. If food is less in quantity it irritates the digestive tract and burns the dhatues. Our effort has to maintain a balanced agni which can digest food well when eating in the right quantity, at regular intervals the proper balanced agni helps to build balance tissues in the body. Drinks such as Lassi (yogurt drinks), lime juice and coconut water should be emphasized. Massage in the morning with coconut or sunflower oil is also recommended. Dress in cotton or silk clothing as they are cooling and allow the skin to breathe. Clothing should be loose-fitting in colors such as white, grey, light purple light green. Wear sun glasses, but avoid red or purple color tinted lenses. Activities such as swimming and walking on a green grass are good summertime activities to soothe and cool Pita. Do your work indoors and take a short nap after lunch. Fragrances such as sandalwood, rose, jasmine are great cooling options. Yoga practices to benefit Pita include shitali pranayama cow, cobra, fish and boat asanas. Herbs to benefit Pita include Amlaki, sandalwood, shatavari, guducci licorice manjishta, daru haridra and pomegranate. You also can make Pita balancing tea with mint leaves, spearmint leaves and saffron fibers. Heat 4 cups of water in a pot, add slightly crushed mint and spearmint leaves, 1 tablespoon of each. Boil for 3 minutes, let it cool add sucunat or rice syrup, 1 tablespoon and saffron fiber, 1/8 teaspoon strain and serve cool. Pitta predominant, in mid-life women will likely suffer from an increase in hot flashes and anger. Understanding the great energy cycles that span our lifetime along with our body constitution is a great secret revealed by Ayurveda four our benefit. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) occurs more often in women between their late 20s and early 40s who have at least one child. PMS is a combination of physical and emotional disturbances that occur after a woman ovulates and ends with menstruation. A great variety of symptoms have been attributed to PMS, the

most frequent mood related symptoms include anger and irritability, anxiety, tension, depression crying, over sensitivity, exaggerated mood swings along with fatigue, bloating (due to fluid retention) weight gain, breast tenderness, acne sleep disturbances either sleeping too much or too little, insomnia, appetite changes with over eating or food cravings. General management includes a healthy constitutional lifestyle, avoid salt before the menstrual period, reduce caffeine intake, and quit smoking reduce intake of refined sugars, reduce hot spicy and sour foods, drink plenty of fluids to help reduce bloating, fluid retention and other symptoms, eat frequent small meals balancing Pitta and Vata, vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium are commonly used. Tryptophan which is found in dairy products may also be helpful. The most commonly used herbs in female disorders are ashoka, shatavari, lodhra, and bringaraj. Take milk decoction of shavari and aloe vera juice as it is cooling. Menorrhagia is an abnormally heavy and prolonged menstrual period at regular intervals, may be associated with abnormally painful periods also. The most common symptoms or presence of excessive bleeding with lots of pain, burning sensation in lower portion of groin, pelvic region, back, region of kidneys, flanks and severe pain in uterus. Many complaints like weakness, mental confusion, feeling of darkness, thirst, burning sensation, anemia, drowsiness, can be associated with menorrhagia. The treatment protocol will be appropriate assessment of the condition along with several external and internal uses of herbs and formulation. The following home remedies can be helpful: black raisins, dates, beets, apples, pomegranates, liver as it is heavy in iron, green leafy vegetables, goat meat as it is not very heating or cooling and most easiest on human gastro intestinal system. Avoid any heat application like Jacuzzi, rest, and drink lots of water not very cold, can take sweet astringent herbs as mentioned earlier. Dysmenorrhea is gynecological medical condition of pain during menstruation. Dysmenorrhea presents multiple clinical symptoms like sharp, throbbing, dull, burning, and shooting pain in the lower abdomen several days prior to menstruation or subsides as menstruation tapers off. There are so many co-occurring symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dizziness, disorientation, hypersensitivity to sound, light, smell, touch, fainting and fatigue. The management includes diet, lifestyle changes, and herbs as per the body constitution. The use of birth control pills can prevent the symptoms of dysmenorrhea as birth control pills stop ovulation from occurring.

Higher Self

By Marcella Zinner

CREATING CHANGE Families that thrive Families have a distinct ability to thrive despite the enormous changes, challenges and transitions that can occur. We look to the family unit as a source of love, nurturing, nourishing, and acceptance. We also get the opposite-the polaritywhich is conflict, fear, anger, and frustration. The Universe provides this polarity in all things. It is a universal law-the yin and yang, black and white, up and down, in and out, good and bad, joyfulness and sadness. All of these states of being are needed and necessary because these are the energies for change. Change begets creation. This is transformation. It takes these types of transitions to create change and transformations. We attract, unconsciously and consciously, and create both polarities inside the family as well as outside of the family unit. This universal law of polarities is that which allows energies to swing, shift, and move back and forth. This is what creates and enhances growth and change. This is the energy of transitions to achieve balance. What we are experiencing as individual shifts, growths, and changes is really the method of moving from one level to another, or shifting from one perspective to another. Perspective shift is what moves our consciousness from asleep to awake or awareness. Awareness is the key to what the universe has planned for you. However, perspective shifts require a period of chaos in between. Families go through shifts or changes for many reasons. When we are in the dy-

cally, change is precipitated by pain. The one in pain will continue to seek out relief- or pleasurewhich begins the chaos. One of the main reasons family units have been experiencing chaos is because the old paradigm was no longer working. We are experiencing cleansing for renewal. The Universe provides a delicate dance to create spiritual growth and balance. When one family member breaks away from the accustomed patterns of behaviors and opinions, usually the family unit begins to break out of their comfortable patterns. Doubt and fear enter. Change is occurring. Change requires collapse of the existing pattern and the ensuing chaos that a new pattern and greater order can be found. Every benefit is preceded by a time of unsettled change. Our imbedded preconceived beliefs requires deep clearing and deep collapse. The shift, collapse, and ensuing chaos pattern is fearful, unsettling, and unknown. The unknown is what is frightening. However, it is worth it once we get on the other side of the chaos. Consider that life has an inherent blueprint of wellness, always present, even when it appears that chaos has replaced order. Healthy patterns find one another and re-establish themselves. So the dis-harmony or chaos has no “blueprint”, it cannot “find itself” and re-assemble. It simply disappears and the result is that the dis-harmony or chaos is “healed”.

2. The escalating threats to our current “status” make the prospect of change worthwhile. Therefore, the remaining element necessary before we make a change is: WE NEED A REASON TO BELIEVE” that the change we are about to make can be accomplished. We need a sign that it is do-able! Even given the clearest knowledge, many individuals are reluctant to make changes. Sadly, it is only after experiencing personal crises, that we find reason to BELIEVE that change is possible. Through personal experience, we discover a reason to believe. More often than not, we must experience what we do not want in our lives before we know what we do want! Historically, it is new ideas, solidly based in truth, that have opened us up to entirely new ways of change and possibility. We need to be able to see a reason to BELIEVE! Finally, we have arrived at an evolutionary path, where change is desirable. The key is that we must recognize that we can apply our beliefs. The imbedded past fears and doubts can be released by simply being willing to change, be willing to accept the ensuing chaos, to be willing to allow our new perspective to “find itself” a new pattern within us! It is our ability to think differently and adapt to the conditions of our changing world that assure our evolutionary change to peace, love, and soul growth.

Awareness is the key to what the universe has planned for you. namics of family interactions, we have imbedded doubts, biases, opinions, and a self-preservation status, also known as ego! Family interactions can run the gamut of wonderful best friends to complete alienation. Families that thrive have a continuing thread that connects and brings in the protection of one another. It is in this protection that provides the energy for survival, and ultimately transitions towards our evolution. This is the basis of evolution of our consciousness. Family units have a way of defending and protecting each other to the outside world yet continue the interaction of chaos within the family unit. This is the very element that allows us to continue the chaos. A unique yet, all very common, picture of our all American family! Family dynamics begin to change when chaos begins to escalate. Chaos begins to escalate when a family member begins to change. Typi22 september 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Beliefs that threaten us- create fear or doubt in us- have no real blueprint to establish itself in us. For lasting and life affirming change to occur, our present system of beliefs must experience the disarray of chaos in order to re-establish what is true in our lives. Change is a form of chaos that is clearly a part of our nature. To heal beliefs that have led us to think of our situation as intolerable, three elements must be present: 1. We must be willing to change. 2. We must believe that the change is worth making. 3. We must believe that the change is possible. Two of the factors required for a single piece of information to make a difference in our world are already in place: 1. History shows that our willingness to change is our nature.

As Einstein stated, “The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking and beliefs we were at when we created them.” We now have an opportunity for change. American School of Natural Health (ASNH)

he American School of Natural Health (ASNH) in Tampa, Florida, offers unique, comprehensive and holistic programs in natural health with the aim of educating highly competent, safe and passionate natural health practitioners who can enjoy a rewarding and flexible career as they work for the betterment of the public’s health and well-being. ASNH was set up in 2013 by it President, Hermann Keppler, who also founded and remains the Principal of Europe’s largest training provider in a range of natural therapies, CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine). The curriculum of ASNH is based on CNM’s tried and tested experience of training highly successful practitioners who are widely known for the calibre of their training and their practical expertise. The school’s Course Director, Deserie Valloreo, a natural health practitioner in St Petersburg, is very enthusiastic about the new school. “I am often asked how and

where people can pursue a formal education and career in natural health. ASNH provides personal mentorship and instruction right in our backyard.” ASNH offers training programs in America, to become a Nutrition Consultant, Herbal Consultant, Natural Health Practitioner, Master Nutritionist, and Master Herbalist. All programs integrate both scientific and naturopathic principles into a distinct approach to natural healthcare. The tenets of naturopathy include that: • Nature can facilitate the body’s self healing mechanism if given the right conditions. • Prevention is preferable to cure. • The underlying cause of dysfunction should be identified and treated, not just the symptoms. • The WHOLE person should be treated – physically and emotionally. • Health is not just ‘absence of infirmity’ – it should be abundant vitality.

• The PERSON is treated, not the disease, and each individual is unique and responds in a different way. ASNH programs include both academic lectures and hands-on practice sessions to ensure confident application on graduation. All programs begin with Bio Medicine (Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology) unless you already have a qualification in Bio Medicine. ASNH programs are based on part time study so that students can work around other commitments. Additionally, they are run on a modular system, enabling students to join the class at several points throughout the year. ASNH is a licensed school in the State of Florida (License #4748) and is accredited by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Find out more by attending an Open House. Call US 813-455-4202 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm EST), send an email to info@ asnh.us or visit www.asnh.us.

Natural Facial Rejuvenation with Laser

Finding the calm path in the forest of life’s chaos

T

herapeutic Laser (or Cold Laser) is an effective therapy for stimulating collagen and elastin. When the laser is shine on the skin, it dilates capillaries in which allows fresh blood supply and nutrients to the area, accelerating repair and regeneration of tissue. Also, laser promotes the increase of oxygen for healthy cell metabolism and speeds up the removal of cellular waste by-products to the lymphatic system. Unlike Cosmetic Lasers that burn and peal skin the Therapeutic Laser does NOT destroy tissue it does just the opposite. It is also very effective for the treatment of: burns, open wounds, severe back pain and many Inflammatory and painful conditions. “This type of Laser is not painful or toxic to the human body. At Lumina Healing Ctr we use several different Lasers depending on the condition being treated….some Lasers are more effective for the treatment of severe Chronic pain/inflammation (deep penetrating) and others for facial (shallow stimulation)” Explains, Oscar owner of Lumina Healing Ctr. “For those that are not afraid of needles, we take it one step further. We perform Laser on the face then followed by Acupuncture for $65. Lumina Healing Center, Inc (727)898-5900 GolLumina.com

RE-BALANCE

E

very part of our body; cell, bone, tissue and molecule was born with a normal healthy frequency of vibration called “Chi or Energy”. During the early years of growing up, we build layers of imbalances and blockages of this vital Chi/Energy. This imbalance/blockage stops or limits our normal frequency to our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical levels of our well being. We literaly “get out of tune or sync” with our own natural and normal frequency. The Chi/Energy can be returned or restored by the use of powerful energetic tools or modalities such as ACUPUNCTURE-both needle or Acutron/ Electrical; CRYSTALS or STONES; SOUND (Tuning Forks, Mantras, Crystal Bowls, and Prayer); and your own SENSING SYSTEM CALLED CHAKRAS, which are energy vortexes within your own body.

September - 2013

By Imsara

Things may get more relaxing over the coming month so it is important to maintain an inner level of positivity and cheer. Take some time to just indulge yourself, doing things you have been meaning to do in ways that bring you both peace and harmony. If your attitude is correct all will be well. Entertaining conflict of any kind will stir up needless negativity. Chill.

LIBRA Make an effort to foster extraordinary points of view. Pay more attention to the things that bless your life with beauty, peace and calm and realize there is no redemption in harbouring expectations or illusions of any kind. There can also be far reaching decisions made over the month. Take no shortcuts and relish in new opportunities as they arise!

SCORPIO Holding together is kind of a keyword for you this month. Things can feel more intense then usual yet at the same time you can feel a deeper sense of positive direction and flow. Seek first to make sure your aligning yourself with your greater nature and be firm against negative forces that try to bog you down.

SAGITTARIUS It is all about how you conduct yourself. Keep a steady hand, a cool head and an open heart and much can be achieved. Be prepared for surprises. Notice what you allow to influence you. Weed out weakening factors within your personal approach. Simplicity in efforts will lead to more progress and less mistakes. Less stress, too!

CAPRICORN Eliminate going to any extremes in strive for balance. Moderation is your watchword over this month and all dealings reflect a need for temperance and discernment. Be thorough in what you attempt to carry out relative to your goals and plans. Refuse to cater to expectations and avoid making judgements until all facts are in.

AQUARIUS Core feelings and ideas may not be popular but it could be just what the party needs. Carefully evaluate your goals and convictions and seek out those who are in accord with your vision. Maintain an alert inner awareness when out and about and notice not only what is said but also what is not said. Much can be gained.

PISCES Take note of the current mood around you and make a d j u s t m e n t s a c c o rd i n g l y. Examine the recent goals and standards you have set for yourself. Evaluate what you can yet realize and shrug off any losses. Most of all, do not interfere with the lives of those around you. It is best to remain objective and offer an opinion only when asked.
