STARTING RECOVERY FROM THE 2011
HURRICANE OF THE PRAIRIE On Monday July 11, 2011 Governor Branstad declared Tama County, Iowa a disaster area after a rare straight-line wind storm hit the area before dawn. Early estimates are that over the course of about 30 minutes Tama County lost about $100 million dollars in economic output. We are very thankful that this rare storm did not take any human lives. Here is the initial assessment of the damages. Rural Tama County, Iowa: Widespread loss of power from toppled substations, power line poles and snapped wires. Transmission lines, shredded pieces of property and vegetation obstructs a number of county roads. A number of roads are closed until it is safely restored. Tens of millions in corn crops have damage. Debris of various sizes from residential dwellings, tool Rural Tama County sheds, barns, grain bins, communication transmission towers, trees are scattered throughout the crop land and would need to be carefully cleaned up. Reports are also coming in on large scale loss of animal life. Clutier, Iowa: Multi-day power outage. Community shelter erected. Downtown has suffered significant damage. Not much of the structure is left of the Clutier Fire station and City Hall. Tama-Benton Coop real estate in Clutier also Clutier, Iowa received a beating. So did some residential homes caused by debris from fallen trees. Garwin, Iowa: Power outage and gas leak. Red Cross has been deployed. Downtown properties have lost roofs and portions of exterior walls. Grain bins are toppled and metal pieces strewn across the downtown park amongst the playground equipment. Many trees in town have been snapped in half or Garwin, Iowa severely damaged causing damage to homes, vehicles and other personal property. Dysart, Iowa: Power outage. Community shelter erected. Significant damage at the Benton-Tama Coop with grain bins and grain dryers getting toppled. Extensive debris from fallen trees shattering windows, sidings and roofs on personal property and community buildings like the Baptist Church downDysart, Iowa town. Traer, Iowa: Traer Manufacturing building’s 48 feet high ceiling area as well as portions of the south and east walls have been ripped open. Most of the in town real estate and vehicle damage has been caused by trees. Power has been restored in town. Toledo, Iowa: The roof on a Scharnweber business property on Highway 63 Traer, Iowa has been blown off. Tree limbs are covering the streets in the residential neighborhoods. Residential properties have been damaged. Phase I: Starting the long-term economic recovery True to the core of Iowa values of looking out for neighbors, families and friends are supporting each other in sheltering and initial clean-up. Local emergency leadership are partnering with surrounding counties who are able to lend support. Property owners are being cautioned against assuming flood and hurricane insurance also covering straight-line wind storms, so please check. HOUSING DEVELOPMENT What is new: Applications have been mailed out to Tama County home owners who expressed an interest in rehab. Second year of applications opened for the 2011 Spring season. Watch for: Spring 2012 is expected to have another round of grants / low interest loans for housing rehab. Please touch base if you want to receive info packets when available.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION What is new: A number of new grants have been made available with deadlines over the next 2 months. Please touch base if you are looking to improve a historic, residential, commercial or public property. Watch for: Next meeting will be Wed, Aug 17, 6:30pm, Reinig Center, Toledo.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRUST What is new: Pending the availability of funds the group is currently working on helping local chambers, development groups and commercial clubs in recognizing 5 year entrepreneurs to increase exposure and perspective for more to follow. Watch for: Behind-the-scenes meetings with local entrepreneurs every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m..

CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU What is new: Full color pocket travel guide is now available at 40 Iowa Welcome centers, your local city hall, library and 100+ places in Tama County with fun things to do. Watch for: Save the date Saturday early Nov 2011 for a night of original mystery and adventure. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Average county wage held its own in FY11 at $13.42/hour. May 2011 unemployment is down to 6.1% (State 6.0%, US 9.1%)

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION What is new: 40 entities received $90K for $2.3M local investment into betterment. Watch for: another free grant writing workshop end of Jan 2012 and grant deadline March 15, 2012.
