All Trump Cards

Govan’s Hidden Histories is a creative project celebrating Govan. These cards were developed by a team of Govanites and Riverside Museum & Glasgow Museums staff, led by artist & researcher tara s Beall.

Two or more people can play. Shuffle the cards and deal them all face down. Players hold cards in a pile, face up, but only look at their top card.

Special thanks to team members & partners: Govan Workspace, Govan Stones, Govan Fair Committee, GalGael, Northlight Heritage, Plantation Productions, Friends of Elder Park, The Fairground Community Group, & Glasgow Museums. Thanks to Govan Reminiscence Group, Tim Clarkson, Chani Bond.

The player to the left of the dealer starts. Player chooses a category and reads it aloud from their top card (eg. “Wow Factor = 9”). Other players then read out same category for their top card. Highest number wins. Winner collects all cards from that round, and places them at the bottom of their pile. The winner then chooses a category for the next round.

tara is an artist based in Govan and a researcher working with the Riverside Museum via University of Glasgow, Theatre Studies. This project forms part of her doctoral research, which explores how museums can increase connections with local communities, and work with them as equal partners.

If two or more cards are tied (e.g. both Characters of Govan would have to travel the same distance by plane, train or automobile to the Riverside Museum), then all cards from that round are placed in the middle. The same player chooses a category from their next card. Winner of the round takes all cards in the middle.

We look like angels but we’re really Greek gods, commanding the wind. The British Linen Company Bank invited us to Govan because so many sailing ships were built and moored here.

This shiny zig-zag is Scotland's museum of transport and travel. Inside is the oldest wooden bike, an old fashioned street, and ship models from Govan’s mighty shipyards.

I lost ma heid 'cos my master stood in the way of love. I might have been the victim of some loved-up shepherd's revenge, but at least I get to lead the annual Govan Fair Parade.

Govan’s Hidden Histories is a creative project celebrating Govan’s rich heritage, linking it to the new Riverside Museum through a series of alternative heritage trails, walks, and games. Govan Trumps are part of that wider project, and were developed by a 16-member collaborative team of Govanites and staff of Glasgow Museums and the Riverside Museum. The project was initiated and led by artist & researcher tara s Beall. The project team met for nine months in 2013 to develop ideas for a ‘Re-imagined Govan Heritage Trail’, and proposed a series of thematic walks, tours, and games including Characters of Govan Trumps. That team was: • Caroline Austin, Learning & Access, GoMA, Glasgow Museums • Colin Quigley, Govanite and Former Chair of the Govan Reminiscence Group • Frazer Capie, Riverside Museum Gallery Assistant & Govan Stones Volunteer Coordinator • Ingrid Shearer, Archeologist, Northlight Heritage • Janice Hamilton, Gallery Assistant, Glasgow Museums Resource Centre • Jennifer Keenan, Learning & Access Curator, Glasgow Museums History Hub • Jimmy Stringfellow, Govanite, Showman and Chair of the Govan Fair Committee • John Irwin, Learning & Access, Riverside Museum • Lucy Armitage, Learning & Access, Riverside Museum • Maria Leahy, Govanite, Musician & Chair of Friends of Elder Park • Rachel Leckie, Learning & Access Curator, Riverside Museum • Sandy Black, Secretary of the Govan Fair Committee • Tam McGarvey, Metal artist & staff of The GalGael Trust • Tom Donnelly, Govanite, former Directorate Govan & Craigton Integration Network • Trish Caird, Govanite & writer working with Plantation Productions • tara s Beall, artist and researcher Special thanks to project partners: GalGael, Govan Workspace, Govan Stones, Friends of Elder Park, Plantation Productions, Govan Fair Committee, Northlight Heritage, The Fairground Community Group, and Glasgow Museums. Thanks also to the Govan Reminiscence Group, historian and author Tim Clarkson, and project ninja Chani Bond. tara is an artist based in Govan and a researcher working with the Riverside Museum via the University of Glasgow, Theatre Studies.
