Beef Project

It is a great time to be involved in agriculture! In today’s world people often overlook the importance of agriculture, the hard work farmers do and the pride they take in being a Canadian farmer. There are both challenges and opportunities facing the agriculture industry today. With 7 billion people in the world right now, the projections are that the number will grow to over 9 billion by the year 2050. Where is all this food to feed these people going to come from? We, the 4-H beef members, are the future generation that will be given this task to feed the world! On behalf of the St. Paul 4-H Multiclub Beef Project, we would like to welcome you to be part of our 4-H Family by coming out and supporting our projects on their achievement days. 4-H is known to be one of the premiere youth organizations across the world. This organization builds communication, leadership, teamwork and goal setting skills that enable members to become outstanding contributors to society. The 4-H motto ‘Learn to do by Doing’ is highly encouraged to help us achieve our goals not only in 4-H but in our everyday lives. Our 4-H Family offers numerous activities that the whole family can participate in. The entire family is welcomed and encouraged to attend meetings, achievement days and social events. Parents and families of 4-H members play a large role in having a successful club. Some of our social events this year included a visit to CFR, Star’s dispatch centre, Agribition in Regina, Christmas carolling and a redeye toboggan party. The list goes on but we are also dedicated to giving back to the community in numerous ways such as the Knight’s of Columbus food hampers, Haying in the 30’s, the annual highway clean-up as well as donations to local families in need. Our Beef Project consists of 12 members who have worked very hard over the last 200 days feeding, bedding and training a market steer project with one goal in mind, ‘to produce high quality Canadian prime beef’ that the consumer will appreciate. Some of these members are also involved in a heifer and/or cow-calf project; the heart and beginning of every beef project! We have also included all other projects in the St. Paul 4-H Multiclub: Foods, Small Engines, Sheep, K9, Creative Options and our Cleaver project. Thank you to our previous sponsors and buyers. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you at our shows this year! Please take time to enjoy this catalogue and feel free to bring it along with you to our show and sale.

The 4-H Pledge I pledge My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty, My Hands to larger service, My Health to better living. For my club, my community and my country.

Leaders: Roger Beaudin, Paul Kotowich, Andrew Yaremko, Dennis Kotowich Members: Emily Yaremko, Ryan Fodchuk, Megan Kotowich, Kristina Kotowich, Brooke Kotowich, Ashlynn Trefanenko, Rebecca Kotowich, Cameron Kuzma, Kyle Yaremko, Jazlyn Beaudin, Jamie Kuzma, Jonathan Kotowich Like many other non-profit youth organizations in our community, we, the St. Paul 4-H Multiclub members appreciate the support and sponsorship that is generously donated to our club. 4-H is not always about taking but rather giving back too. In previous years our club has helped many other non-profit organizations in our community and beyond. From cooking a meal at the Ronald McDonald House, supporting Haying in the 30’s, to helping a fellow 4-H member battling cancer, our club is not shy about giving back. This year our Multiclub will be donating funds from their Box Lunch Social, and our Beef Project has raised a charity steer that will be auctioned off at the St. Paul District Steer Show & Sale on Monday June 1, 2015. These funds will be donated directly to the St. Paul & District Hospital Foundation. Hope to see you there!

Kennedy Austin(chair), a past 4-H member is now in remission. This picture with her was taken last June at our year end party where our members gave her a small donation to help offset the costs of battling cancer. Each beef member took a portion from the sale of their calf to give to Kennedy. Included were all the Multiclub members who also gave a donation. The members were humbled to give back to Kennedy who has contributed to our Club is so many ways!

The St. Paul 4-H Multiclub has donated several times to STARS. This past November we had the opportunity to visit the STARS Dispatch Centre and tour the helicopters’. Unfortunately while we were there we witnessed a dispatch back to our own community. In their last fiscal year, STARS was dispatched to the St. Paul and surrounding area 61 times.

I named my 4-H steer Chicken and my 4-H heifer Bobby-Sue and I like to sing that Oak Ridge Boys song to her, she loves to lick me. My 4-H lamb’s name is Vixen. I am the Treasurer of the beef project, Historian of the Multiclub and Secretary of the Sheep project. I was a Cleaver member and had a ewe lamb last year. I have three brothers and a mom and a dad. I like to do Ukrainian dancing and I like drawing. I did a presentation on Ukrainian dancing with my brother this year and we got second at Regionals. My favorite animal is a horse. We have four boy horses and one girl horse, the girl horse is new. We have sheep, goats and cattle on our farm. We have one baby goat so far. I joined 4-H because I like animals. I work hard and do lots of chores carrying heavy feed pails for my calves. I’m going to save my money from my steer to buy a heifer for next year and for my school fund after I pay for this steer. My mom and dad don’t let us spend our 4-H money but I hope I am allowed to buy an ipad.

Hi, I’m Kyle Yaremko and I’m 11 years old. This is my third year in 4-H and I am in the Sheep and Beef projects. I have a steer and a heifer with the beef project and a market lamb with the sheep project. My steer’s name is Pirate and my heifer’s name is Black Betty and my lamb is Wayne. My steer is gaining really well. I work hard with my calves and lambs feeding them, teaching them to lead, and grooming them. I would like to thank my previous buyers, Guy’s Custom Silage and Everest Trucking for buying my steers and Xtreme Tubing Technology for buying my lamb last year. I am the Vice-President of the Beef and Sheep projects and one of the Historians for the Multiclub this year. I like playing football with my brothers, fishing, roping, Ukrainian dancing, and riding horses. I joined 4-H because I wanted to make new friends and try new things like multi-species judging and going to 4-H camps. This year I did a presentation with my sister on Ukrainian dancing and we made it all the way to Regionals and got second place.

My name is Ryan Fodchuk and this is my first year as a member of the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club. I joined 4-H because I wanted to learn more about working with cattle and gain more experiences. My beef project this year is a Charolais cross steer that we farm raised. I have named him Homer. He was very challenging to train at the beginning but has come a long way. I would like to thank the community, the many businesses, and the individuals that sponsor and support 4-H in so many ways.

My name is Ashlynn Trefenanko and this is my second year in 4-H. My steer, Moe is a Simmental/Red Angus X. I picked Moe as my 4-H steer because he was quiet and he had a very uniform solid build. I love to brush Moe and spend lots of time with him so we can become buddies. He loves to give me sloppy kisses. Besides Beef, I am also in the Foods project. In Foods we get to bake, cook, make a mess and of course eat. It’s awesome! I love 4-H because we get to do a lot of awesome activities with our club. I am also learning how to be responsible and take care of my own project. I would like to give a BIG thank you to TLL Oilfield Consulting for buying my 2014 steer ‘Turbo’. From the sale of my calf last year, I donated money to the Ronald McDonald House in Edmonton and I also started the A. Trefenanko 4-H Scholarship.

I love 4-H! It has taught me things like public speaking in front of a crowd, making friends and being a role model. Last year I even made it to the Regional level in public speaking. I joined 4-H because my dad’s family has always been in it, and I am so happy I joined. Last year I had a steer named RUBY RED. I loved him so much! He was the best steer ever! This year my steer is red again and looks exactly like the one last year. I decided to call him RUBY RED the 2nd. Last year I did not place with my steer but I knew he was a winner anyway. I love working with my steer. I love beef but I always hate saying goodbye to an amazing steer because he is like my pet. When I am not doing 4-H I like to run, Ukrainian dance and play sports like curling. I would like to give a huge thank you to my last year’s buyer, Car-Ouelles (Robertson Group)! As well, I would like to thank my Beef and Foods leaders.

Hello, my name is Kristina Kotowich. This is my fifth year in 4-H and I am in the Steer, Heifer and Foods projects. This year my steer Windrix is a black Simmental/ Angus and my heifer is a black Simmental. I enjoy working with my animals. Being in 4-H, I have learned many skills but the skill I have most enjoyed is public speaking. I have worked very hard at perfecting this skill and it has paid off very welI. Some of my most memorable moments are winning Regionals three times, including this year in a presentation with my cousin Brooke. I also took first place at the 100th year 4-H public speaking competition in Olds, AB. I also won Grand Champion Steer at the Club level last year. I have made many new friends attending 4-H camps and look forward to the many opportunities 4-H will bring me in the future. Outside of 4-H my interests are dance, curling and running. Thank you to Lewis Farms for purchasing my steer last year.

This year I have a black Simmental Angus steer named Protein. I spend lots of time helping out on the farm and I like working with Protein. During my time in 4-H, I have made many friends, learned to care for my animals, and as challenging as it is, I learned to public speak. 4-H has helped me understand the importance of responsibility and helping other group members. Some of my most memorable moments include the activities we have done both at the club and district levels such as tobogganing parties, Christmas parties, box lunch socials, and the fishing derby. When I am not busy with 4-H or on the farm, I like to weight lift, curl and play football. I would like to thank my last year’s buyer, Northern Lights Nisku for their support.

My name is Jazlyn Beaudin. I am 16 years old and have been in 4-H for eight years. 4-H has helped me tremendously in many aspects of my life, from overcoming my shyness by participating in Public Speaking, to helping me start my own herd by joining the heifer club. This year I am in the Steer, Heifer and Small Engines projects. My steer is a Black Angus X and his name is M.J. Burger. My heifer is a purebred Charolais and I have named her Bliss. 4-H has done a lot for me, but without the help and support of individuals within the community and my previous buyers, I know I would not have had the same experience. I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Shapka from Stabrite Trophies and all of the previous buyers who have purchased one of my calves. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Alongside 4-H, I am passionate about curling and also barrel racing. This year I am in the Steer, Heifer, and Small engines projects. My steer this year is a Simmental X and goes by the name of Wrangler and my heifer’s name is Sassy. Being in the beef project has allowed me to gain knowledge in the beef industry and how to train and raise calves. Currently this year I hold the position of Vice President in my district council and in our Multiclub. I would like to thank Xtreme Tubing for purchasing my steer last year. Your support and the community’s support is much appreciated!

This is my fourth year in 4-H and I am in the Steer, Heifer, Foods and Small Engines projects. My steer this year is a big Simmental X and his name is Charlie. This year has been a fun filled year for our club as we toured the STARS dispatch centre, enjoyed a rodeo performance at CFR and travelled to Regina to enjoy a weekend long trip at Agribition. The biggest highlight this season has been winning at Club, District and at the Regional Public Speaking competitions and having the opportunity to compete at the Provincial level in Olds in the Senior Presentation category with my sister Jamie. Some of my other interests include curling, Ukrainian Dancing, shopping and spending time with my family and friends. At this time I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to my last year’s buyer of my calf, Bear. Thank you SMYL MOTORS!!! Your support is very appreciated. Another BIG THANK YOU to our awesome leaders of the St. Paul 4-H Multiclub. Best Wishes to my fellow 4-H members as we prepare for our upcoming shows.

I am 12 years old and this is my fourth year in 4-H. I am part of the Steer, Heifer, Cow/Calf and Foods projects. My steer and my heifer are both Black Simmentals and their names are Little Billy and Becky. I believe 4-H has given me numerous opportunities and skills that will help me further on in life such as public speaking, responsibility and as our motto says to ‘Learn to do by Doing’. A special accomplishment this year was placing first in the intermediate presentation division at Club, District and Regional levels. Fishing is my favorite pastime activity and for sports I am passionate about badminton and curling. 4-H has been part of my family for more than 40 years, and it feels great that I am part of this legacy. I am sure that from up above ‘Grandpa Frank’ would be proud of all his grandkids and their achievements in 4-H. I can proudly say that I would not be the same person today if I was not involved in 4-H. A special thank you to Northern Lights Welding for purchasing my steer last year, as well as all of my previous buyers!

As 4-H members we are all the drivers of our own success. My name is Megan Kotowich and this is my sixth year as a member of the St Paul 4-H Multclub. I am involved in the Steer, Heifer, Cow-Calf and Small Engines projects. This year my steer project is Hereford/Simmental X and his name is Doll Face. Outside of 4-H I am active in sports such as curling and badminton. Learning about mechanics and operating large equipment has become a big highlight in my life and someday I would like to invest that into a career. The 4-H program has provided me with skills that I will be able to use throughout my entire life. I have learned that to succeed it takes hard work and pride. 4-H encourages all of us as members to be strong and independent young individuals. It is not the push from behind or the pull from the front…It is the drive from WITHIN that makes us want to succeed. I would like to thank Leanne and Terry Wozniak from Wozniak Bulk Fuels Sales for purchasing my steer last year and all of my previous buyers who have supported me in the past.

Food Project

Our Food group this year consisted of 12 members who had a great deal of fun cooking and baking a variety of items. The members made chocolates,(including chocolate houses), decorated cakes, created Halloween treats, prepared a variety of breakfast foods and made a Christmas dinner that consisted of salads, stuffed chicken, potatoes, a rice dish and dessert. They also baked bread and made fajitas and tacos, including homemade tortillas. A big thank you goes out to the St. Paul Regional High School and Ms. Landsiedel for the generous use of the Foods room as well as to all the moms who helped in the kitchen and volunteered their time to make our Foods group so successful. For our achievement day the members will be hosting a Mother’s Day Tea for their mothers, grandmothers and other family members at the Regional High School. Leader: Sharon Dunne-Kotowich Assistant Leader: Connie Landsiedel Members: Cameron Kuzma, Kayla Mangatal, Kelton Mangatal, Ashlynn Trefanenko, Rebbeca Kotowich, Hannah Faucher, Kristina Kotowich, Denver Grailing, Brooke Kotowich Cleavers: Addison Graling, Kylie Lanza, Mercedes Trefanenko

This is the 2nd year having a Sheep Project in our club and we have 10 members participating. We have 7 4-H members that are eligible to sell their market lambs, 2 cleaver members with market lambs, and this is the 1st year we have a Cleaver member with a goat project. Members pick out their lambs and have a weigh-in about 60 days before the show and sale date. The goal for their lambs is to double their weight in those 60 days. The kids will learn how to halter break, feed, shear, hoof trim and show a lamb which is very different from a beef animal. The Sheep project is a simple, short and inexpensive project that is perfect for acreages or farms and kids of all ages. Our show is fun with an opportunity for viewers to participate in a judging class and our audience gets to decide the winner of the Costume Class. We want to thank the buyers of our lambs last year. Xtreme Tubing Ltd., Reel Safety, Plante Farms Ltd., Monique’s photography, and Northpark Collision. A big thank-you goes out to our Auctioneer and MC Myles Wowk and to UFA for donating the use of their services and facilities for our achievement day. This year Monique’s photography has donated a ½ hour photo session (digitals included) worth $330 to be drawn at the end of our sale. Only those who buy at the sale that night will get their names entered one time for each lamb that they buy. Odds are awesome at 1 in 7 at the most! Our Show & Sale will be in the UFA parking lot on June 5th, 2015 rain or shine, so bring an umbrella just in case. Show is at 3:00 P.M. Sale is at 5:00 P.M. Stop by for a coffee and donuts and see what it is all about! Leader: Erin Yaremko Members: Kyle Yaremko, Emily Yaremko, Bradley Dubrule, Spencer Graling, Denver Graling, Sydney Proulx, Peyton Smith

Small Engine Project

4-H is not only about fluffy cows, woolly sheep or tasty food. We are the project that likes to play with tools, the grease, and anything that burns diesel. Our Small Engines project has been busy this past season working on everything from quads to air compressors to those misbehaving chainsaws that never want to start. We have learned the basic principle of a 2 stroke/ 4 stroke gas engine and the basic tools that are a must in every mechanics tool box. It has been a fun filled packed year and we would like to thank our leader Darrell Kuzma, all the parent volunteers as well as the Graling’s for the use of their shop. Here may be some of our next future mechanics! Leader: Darrell Kuzma Members: Megan Kotowich, Tyson Kotowich (Cleaver), Jamie Kuzma, Jazlyn Beaudin, Cameron Kuzma, Spencer Graling, Kelton Mangatal

16

Cleaver Project

A cleaver is a member who is between the ages of 6 to 8 years old. They get to participate in all the meetings and fun activities just like a registered 4-H member that is 9 to 21 years old. Some of the Cleavers have chosen to have a baby calf, market lamb, goat or K-9 project but it is not a requirement to be part of any given project. If they have a project they are not eligible to compete or sell their project through 4-H. Each month when the Multiclub has its meeting the Cleavers have their own meeting with an activity geared around the 4-H’s of 4-H, Head, Heart, Health, Hands . They then present back to the club what they did and learned. The Cleavers have decided to collect pull tabs (pop can tabs) for the Ronald McDonald House in Edmonton to help families in need with sick kids. The pull tabs help buy laundry soap, a birthday celebration with cake, , movie night and popcorn for families, supplies for the recreation room like crayons, or a warm meal for a family that just arrived. Our Cleavers may be small but they have Big Hearts and an ambition goal of 100 pounds of tabs ( that is about 128,000 tabs) so we could use all the help that we can get to collect enough tabs. If you would like to help us collect tabs please contact Erin Yaremko at 780-645-6550, no amount is too small!
