Foreword Welcome to LaBatte Simmentals 37th Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale on Friday, March 3rd, 2017 at Johnstone Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw, SK on #1 Highway. We’d really like to thank again all the bidders and buyers from our past sales for the continued support and effort you make each year to attend our sale. It is greatly appreciated. The cattle market is rebounding nicely from its down turn this summer and fall. Calf prices, feeder cattle and cull cow prices made a big upward swing late in the year and early 2017. The Simmental and Simmental cross calves are still in high demand and bring premiums. At the commercial bred heifer sales this November and December, the Simm-Angus females were definitely the sale features and brought big premiums for the owners. The Simmental breed offers the commercial industry its high maternal traits, milk and muscle, superior performance and carcass value. From the commercial producer to the feedlots and to the slaughter plants, Simmental genetics are in high demand. Last year we told you about out new venture of buying a ranch five miles north of our place and running commercial cows on it. Our son Lynlee and his wife Hayley are equal partners in this ranch and Lynlee has taken on most of the responsibility for running it. We will be calving out about 220 commercial cows this late spring, all bred to Simmental bulls. It’s run quite different from our purebred operation in some ways, calving in May and June, winter bale grazing and turning bulls out on the 1st of August. But we will still look for the same traits as our purebred operation – acceptable calving, performance, muscle and structural correctness and temperament. Our bull sale offering this year along with Meadow Acres Farms will consist of close to 100 bulls in total, polled, thick, meaty red and black bulls and a handful of red goggle eyed Fullblood Fleckvieh bulls. They are sired by some of the industries leading sires such as El Tigre, Lotto, Red Zone, Royal Red, Horizon and Vegas. We strive to produce the right kind of bulls for our seedstock producers and commercial customers. Bulls that have fleshing ability, lots of middle and top, high maternal traits, good temperament and structurally good on their feet and legs. Our guest consignor, Meadow Acres Farms, have the same philosophy as us and same goals as us of always trying to be better at providing high quality Simmental beef bulls to the livestock industry. LOL. The boys are all involved in hockey and all on different teams. They’re involved in 4-H Beef and Grain also. The girls just went on a big trip to Disneyworld in Florida with Janalee and Tim and had a blast. They’re involved in gymnastics and karate. We’re lucky to have all our grandkids living so close to us, as we get to watch them grow up. They make us laugh and be proud grandparents.

Health All bulls will be scrotal measured and palpated. Bulls over 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested. Bulls under 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested prior to delivery. Weights will be posted sale day. All bulls and heifers were given Cattlemaster 4, Somnustar PH and Fortress 7 in June and boostered with same in September. In-Herd Semen

LaBatte Simmentals & Meadow Acres Farms reserve the right to collect semen on any bull sold through this sale. The semen collection will be at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience. Any semen collected will be for in herd use only.

Delivery

At the buyer’s option and risk, LaBatte Simmentals and Meadow Acres Farms will take purchaser’s bulls home, feed them under their management and deliver them FREE anywhere in the prairie provinces to your nearest central location. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery will take place between April and the middle of May. For bull buyers outside the prairie provinces, bulls will be delivered at a reasonable charge. The bulls are the property of the buyer as soon as they are sold. Therefore, buyers must insure their animals for the time they are at LaBatte and Meadow Acres Farms. The heifers will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale.

Her Accelerator daughter, 163X, is sending her third bull to our annual bull sale, and with other sons working in the herds of Stolson Farms in Hodgeville, SK and Roger Schroeder in Baldwin, ND. We have four full sisters sired by Accelerator that are all really good and very similar in type. They are a result of flushing IPU Pocahontas 68M to Accelerator. They’re high producing mothers that have raised some of our high dollar cattle. 5D himself is very smooth and loose made, deep bodied and attractive. He is sired by the $87,000 LFE Vegas bull ourselves and Oberles purchased as the high selling red bull at Lewis Farms 2015 Bull Sale and he goes back to the very productive Lewis Amber cow family. We didn’t get as many taken as usual but as Wilf lives in Douglas, MB, it’s a long way to Gladmar, SK and we tried our hardest. 55D is off an exceptional Accelerator-Pocahontas 68M daughter that has sons working at Cockburn Red Angus at Briercrest, SK and Diamond K Cattle Co., Maple Creek, SK. She has a Horizon daughter at Erixon Simmentals that was purchased as one of our feature females at Simmsational 2015. 217X also produced one of our favorite cows here at the ranch, 154Z, who is the mother of Lot 8. Lot 6 is a full brother by blood to Lot 1, both sired by Vegas and out of full sisters. He will sire the right kind of calves in kind, type and quality. What a set of steers he would sire!

This is a bull that we have admired from birth. He is sired by the powerful Red Zone bull and out of one of our favorite cows, 154Z, a Red Force daughter going back again to the Pocahontas 68M cow family. His full brother sold to Sonny Berndt from Rugby, ND in last year’s sale and he was identical to 61D. Both are dark red, soggy, full of meat and muscle, very loose made and are homo polled. We think this Red Zone son has a lot of potential – great sire, great mother, great bull.

We really like this Redneck son. He’s thick, smooth made, has lots of quarter and rib. Again his sire is the $50,000 red El Tigre son, Redneck, that was our high selling bull in 2015. We bred a few cows to him and are very happy with his progeny as can be seen by this bull. We were down at Mandan Lake Simmental Ranch, the Staigles, in October and were very impressed by the Redneck calves. He’s doing quite a job for them. The dam of 71D is a beautifully uddered Liner 56U daughter that raised one of our high selling bulls in last year’s sale that sold to the Schweitzers at Decker, MB. 71D is very well balanced, he’s stout, has lots of top and muscle and is very stylish. We will have homo test results back by sale day.

The 21A cow is very easy fleshing, pear shaped, beautifully uddered – just a front pasture cow. Her first calf, a bull, sold in last year’s sale to 4 S Farms at Birsay, SK. Investor ranked number 6 out of 68 contemporaries for weaning index with an adjusted weaning weight of 879lbs and an actual weaning weight of 930lbs. Homo polled.

A feature red, powerful, El Tigre son that we are really high on. He reminds us so much of El Tigre himself when we purchased him from McMillen Ranches, only this guy is in a red package. His mother is a young, good uddered Lotto daughter going back to our old matron black cow family, 304Y. She was our original flush cow and we had many great daughters of hers head our black program. We always said it wouldn’t have mattered what she was -- red, fullblood, black, white – she was just a good cow. We really love this 114D. He’s so thick and soggy, has a great haircoat, lots of testicles, big butted, and so loose made just like El Tigre was. This is a bull we plan to draw semen on after the sale and use in our own program. He’s a non diluter being off two black parents and homo polled. He has herd bull written all over him.

This really is one of the good bulls in the sale. We really like him a lot. He is mothered by a really good uddered S-Paw Turbo Charged cow going back to Bodybuilder. We have a really good Code Red first calf heifer in our herd off of 287Z that looks just like mom. She was the spare red heifer for this past Simmsational sale so that’s what we think of her. 149D is really a loose made, thick, stout made bull with lots of hair and eye appeal. We will have his polled test back by sale day. He is definitely one of the feature red bulls in the sale this year and we think he has a bright future.

A moderate framed, cherry dark red, excellent haired Bartender son out of a super cow, 204Z. Her first son sold through our 2015 bull sale to O’Hara Farms at Ceylon, SK for $9,000. Her second calf, a Red Zone daughter, is one of our best two year olds and now this real moderate, thick made Bartender son. She has a beautiful udder, is very deep, pear shaped and easy fleshing. The perfect cow to have as the dam of your herd bull.

A really nice made Vegas son out of a really good Liner 56U cow. Her bull calf in last year’s sale sold to Frank & Kim Arnal from Eastend, SK. El Tigre is one of greatest herdsires to ever walk our pasture. He has done so much for our program, both males and females. We’ve never used a black bull that puts muscle, mass and rear quarter in his progeny like he does. His sons are so consistent in type and kind. His daughters are making really nice young cows as we have two and three year olds calving out this year. They have lots of capacity, natural thickness and real good udders. He’s homo polled and hetero black so we’ve been able to put some of his genetics into our red program. In our 2017 sale a lot of our feature bulls are sired by El Tigre, both blacks and reds. We had the misfortune of losing El Tigre this summer with a back injury. We have a limited amount of semen left on him, so we will continue his legacy through A.I. Thanks for the great job El Tigre!

This El Tigre son comes out of the great Pashmenia 403P cow family, a cow that was one of the best producing black cows we ever owned. She was a black baldy and part Fleckvieh. Now her daughter, Pashmenia 245Z, is taking over as she is a producing machine. Her first offspring was a full sister to 21D and she sold through this very sale as our high selling open heifer to Crossroad Farms for $18,000. Her second calf sold again in our bull sale last year, a black Horizon daughter, to Bert’s NR Simmentals, Haywood, MB for $12,000 and now she has this outstanding El Tigre son in this year’s sale. She has raised our #1 and #2 adjusted weaning weight bulls the past two years. That’s a producer! In last year’s sale her El Tigre son sold for $14,500 to Pearl Valley Simmentals of Ross, ND. He was one of my personal favorite bulls. His full brother this year, 112D, was our heaviest weaning bull at 1020lbs and had an adjusted 205 day weight of 954lbs, the #1 ranked bull. He’s as thick as they come, huge big quarter, big topped, long, great haircoat, lots of testicle and has a great disposition. This homo polled and homo black Soda Pop son is a bull we really like. He’s mothered by an Upgrade daughter we purchased at the National Trust sale in Brandon, MB as a calf. We always really liked the Carli 14N cow family at Mar Mac and finally got a chance to buy a granddaughter of hers as they don’t offer many progeny off that cow family. 55A has turned out just as we expected. She has a great udder, is very feminine, fertile and deep bodied. In last year’s sale her first calf, a Cobra son, sold to Brian & Paige Uran of Ross, ND for $13,000. He also was an excellent bull. You evaluate this bull sale day as I think he has a lot of potential being from a really good young cow. He’s homo–homo, thick butted, deep bodied and has a good haircoat. He’s a herdbull!

A real moderate, great haired Soda Pop bull out of a young Stubby cow we purchased from Bert’s NR as a calf. His five full sisters were one of the highlights at the 2014 Friday Night Lights sale, averaging around $15,000. This February, blaze face Muirheads Broker son has been one of our favorites since spring. He’s always had lots of top and butt in him. He has a great haircoat, is deep ribbed, has loads of capacity and style to burn. What a set of replacement heifers and bulls or steers he would sire. The baldy cattle are becoming very popular. The order buyers and feedlot operators like these cattle with a little chrome on them, knowing there is probably some Simmental influence in them to give them gain-ability and the carcass value they’re looking for. And the baldy replacement females definitely bring a premium.

A bull that moves out well for his amount of muscle and is long bodied and strong topped. This bull has had a real herd bull look to him since he was a young calf. His dam is an extremely hard working Shear Force daughter that raised our high selling bull last year, MAF Lampman 1C who sold to Ferme LaBlond in Quebec. She is a moderate framed cow with a very good udder and she does a great job on every calf. The combination of power and growth from “Mafia” and highly maternal attributes of Shear Force come together for an excellent set of EPDs across the board and a bull that has so much to offer any operation.

Polled/Homo Black. We start the Cobra section with this powerful son. Cobra has been a mainstay for us in the heifer pen and he has really just clicked for us in our herd. The calves have a lot of growth to them and are highly marketable. 93D follows this type very well, he was born to a first calving El Tigre daughter that did a very good job raising him. We have many members of the Lady cow family here and they are highly productive. This Cobra son reminds me a lot of his sire, he is thick, deep and very sound. Homo Polled/Hetero Black. Here is a really neat made Vision son that was purchased in dam as one of the high selling bred heifers of Ashworth’s. He is moderate framed and full of meat and guts! He is as deep a bodied bull as you will find, is very smooth made and phenotypically sound with lots of “pop” to his hind quarter. Another bull that has always had that herd bull look and presence to him. His dam is a black Red Mountain with a perfect udder and it is obvious the great job she did on her first calf! 101D has a really nice set of EPDs, maintaining above average in both calving and growth areas. A bull that deserves serious consideration!

Homo Polled/Homo Black. This Lotto son is arguably the best son we have raised off of our senior walking herd sire! 192D is out of a Poker Face cow that is hard to fault. His dam is our foundation female that has never missed for us and is a beautiful cow that is still going strong and bred again for the fall of this year after flushing her for the last year. LaBatte Simmental will be consigning 16 open replacement heifers in this year’s sale, including 8 black and 8 red heifers. This is a really nice even group of heifers and they are sired by some of the breeds top sires – El Tigre, Soda Pop, Vegas, Dillinger, Red Zone and Prime Beef. We didn’t get a lot of pictures of the heifers this year because of the extreme cold weather when Wilf was here taking pictures. A feature El Tigre heifer of Wade’s. This is really an outstanding heifer sired by the great El Tigre and mothered by a young, productive Liner 56U daughter. One thing for sure, she will have an excellent udder as 159A’s udder is super and the grandmother, CCC Tamale 1U, has the ultimate udder, maybe as close to perfect as you can get. And then add El Tigre in there and it doesn’t get any better. The 87D heifer is an exceptional heifer with her depth of body, muscle, broodiness and has mother cow written all over her.

She did a really good job on her first calf who is sired by TSZ Apollo 508Y, a Hooks Shear Force son. We saw pictures of Apollo and heard a lot of good things about his mother, a tanky Black Joker cow, so we talked Travis Herter into selling us a few straws. He’s in the top 3% of the breed for calving ease so we thought we’d try something a little different on a few heifers. 14D is very feminine, moderate framed, has lots of volume, a great haircoat and we think will make a great young cow.

Geraldine has been a standout heifer right from spring. She is sired by the $32,000 IPU Dillinger 80B, who was a Bootlegger son out of the Pocahontas 2Y cow. He sold to Kinn Simmentals of Turtle Lake, ND in our 2015 bull sale. We collected a little semen off him and bred a handful of heifers to him and, as expected, he really calved well. This heifer is really good, pear shaped, thick and made nice through her head and neck and is really broody. We think she is definitely a sale feature.

We think a lot of this young Prime Beef heifer. She’s out of a first calf Horizon daughter going back to the Barbi cow family. Her sire, Prime Beef, is an A.I. bull we used a bit of at the end of the 2015 breeding season on heifers. The few calves we got we were quite pleased with and he calved very well. This Barbi heifer is very good, she’s really broody, has a great haircoat, is thick but still feminine and has a great disposition. She is one of the feature heifers in our offering.

These Red Zone cattle are some of the best we’ve ever produced. In last year’s bull sale they were one of the strongest group of bulls in the country and sold very well and this past year at Simmsational where we sold six bred heifers sired by him that were very much in demand, topping out at $29,000. He’s a bull that sires bulls and heifers that excel. 116D is moderate framed, really thick made, has lots of top and is pear shaped showing her broodiness.

As we said earlier, when Wilf was here taking pictures it was really cold and miserable so we didn’t get as many pictures taken as we would have liked to, especially of these red heifers. The mother of Ms. Vegas 123D raised a maternal sister that sold to CD Land & Cattle, Doug Domolewski, AB in last year’s sale and the year before a son sold to Clifford Pukas at Wynyard, SK. This Vegas female is cherry dark red, very feminine made and will be a producer.

Finishing off the heifer division of the sale with a middle of February red baldy El Tigre heifer. Her mother is a good High Tide cow we purchased out of the Black Diamond dispersal as one of the high sellers. We have two of her daughters in our herd including a full sister to 169D. This heifer is solid dark red with only a white blaze on her head. She could raise some of the baldy bulls that are so in demand today.
