Chair, Canadian Angus Foundation

The Canadian Angus Foundation is extremely excited to be holding our Building the Legacy Sale 5 at the Canadian Angus Association Convention hosted by Quebec Angus in Quebec City on June 11, 2016. A huge THANK YOU to Rob Smith, our CEO, for soliciting and coordinating the fine offerings in this year’s catalogue. We are deeply indebted to donors offering their best genetics through embryos, semen, or pick of the crop as well as some unique art, collector items and experiences. Thank you to each and every one whether donating or volunteering services for this incredible sale. We have raised more than $380,000 in the last four sales, enabling us to enrich the lives of our Angus youth by encouraging them to continue in the livestock industry; provide educational opportunities for all Angus breeders; assist in scientific and market research; and collect and preserve our Angus history.

This year the Foundation is venturing to create the next Canadian Angus history book with Doug and Linda Henderson coordinating the project. Please help us capture this moment in time and preserve this generation of Angus history by submitting your farm history. Take this opportunity to support your Angus breed and enrich your life through purchasing a lot in this superb Building the Legacy 5 Sale.

Tammi Ribey President, Canadian Angus Association

Welcome to the 5th annual “Building the Legacy” Sale. Over the past four years, Canadian Angus members have generously supported this sale both with their donations and purchases. The Canadian Angus Foundation relies on this sale to continue the important work we do including developing our Canadian Junior Angus Association members, supporting Canadian Angus research, creating education opportunities and preserving our history. This 5th “Building the Legacy” fundraiser is full of great Canadian Angus genetics and experiences of a lifetime; I am sure there is something here for everyone! Thanks for your continued support!

Rob Smith CEO, Canadian Angus Association Welcome to “Building the Legacy 5”!

Our Foundation now has so much going on... ALL of which is due to your generous support for “Building the Legacy”. I am as proud of “BtL” as I am of anything we’ve done in Canadian Angus in recent years. Proud... and inspired. How else can you possibly feel about an initiative where we ask Canada’s Angus members and partners to GIVE their absolute best... for no gain other than the “joy of giving”... and they DO IT! And then Canadian Angus members... including many of the very operations and partners who donated... actually purchase the donations?! To quote Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon” (itself a play on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”): Such is the stuff that dreams are made of... and the dream continues in 2016. Please have a look at the extraordinary donations made again this year by CAA members and partners from coast to coast... and all the way to Scotland! More experiences than ever before. More great live heifer ‘picks’ than ever. Semen on the reigning Black and Red Show Bull of the Year as well as some of this spring’s most sought-after bulls. Embryos representing superior genetic ‘matching and stacking’ from our very best producers. One of those popular and increasingly historic centennial bronzes. And so much more... the only thing that makes me more inspired than our community’s desire to support our incredibly worthy Foundation is the ability to try and purchase the breed-leading (even changing) genetics... the incredible art... the valuable services... the memorable experiences. I’ll never tire of saying it: such is the stuff that dreams are made of. And yet, it’s NOT a dream. It’s all here. For your consideration. And for your support. Please try to come to Convention and attend in person; you will be happy that you did. But if you can’t be in Quebec City on June 11th, please contact one of the many sale volunteers, Belinda or me, or bid online through TEAM. But please support those who have given so much so that we all continue growing our worthy Foundation. Thank YOU. On behalf of your Canadian Angus Association and from the bottom of my heart ...Thank you.

Sylvia Jackson

MERCI!

pick of the herd lot

LeeuwenburgH

Your pick of the entire Red or Black 2015-born bred heifers or 2016-born heifer calves

What an incredible donation from Family and Team Leeuwenburgh at Lethbridge, AB!   Previously we’ve offered picks from extraordinarily generous CAA members’ calendar year heifer calves. Last year, we had a new ‘spin’ on this with another incredible donation of ‘pick of the bred heifers’. This level of donation is stunning to me, and creates so much value for our Canadian Angus Foundation. I have so much respect and admiration for those making such a donation.   Well... the Leeuwenburghs are so generous... so committed to Canadian Angus... that they are offering a pick of EITHER their 2016 heifer calf OR 2015 bred heifer selections!   You will have the opportunity to peruse one of the largest selections of Angus females in the country to select your female, either a heifer calf or a bred heifer. And with the escalating interest in the Leeuwenburgh’s breeding program, what a donation this is! There are Red Angus and Black Angus. There are offspring from their outcross red genetics and performance-oriented cow herd. Daughters from sires like massive-muscled and foot-improver Red MRLA Flex 49A (from whom the Leeuwenburghs donated one of our highest selling “Building the Legacy” lots last year), EPD and carcass-leader Red Bieber Rollin Deep Y118, calving ease and curve-bending Red GMRA Peacemaker 1216, maternal and carcass-charged Red Andras Fusion R23G.   Or perhaps take a daughter of the red carrier S A V Harvestor 0338 Leeuwenburgh-bred sons (TED 104A & 154A) whose offspring are the ‘talk of the nation’!   If you wonder what the production looks like, please check out this link to their 25th Annual Bull Sale on Tuesday, March 15th: http://www.balogauction.com/pdf/685.pdf Their TED 103C bull (son of TED 154A), pictured here and selling on the 15th, is one of the most ‘buzzed about’ bulls in the nation right now, and Dennis is proud, through this donation, to let you select paternal sisters to this exciting RED Harvestor grandson. A RED HARVESTOR?!?! How exciting is that? Explosive growth, incredible base width and muscle in these rugged POWER bulls! Well, the Leeuwenburghs are excited to DONATE a sexy heifer calf or broody bred heifer to the buyer of their feature lot in Building the Legacy 5 representing these very same genetics.   A moderate, highly maternal cow herd matched with massive breedingmachine sires; does it get any better than that? You tell us! You have the opportunity to purchase Leeuwenburgh’s heifer donation - a calf or a bred heifer to take home!

Red LWNBRG Harvestor 103C

Thank you very much, Leeuwenburgh Angus! Your donation is equally unbelievable and spectacular!

Gagnon

What an incredible donation from Family and Team Gagnon at Chénéville, QC! Joining with our brilliant donations this year from Johnson Livestock and Leeuwenburgh Angus (as well as the amazing past Honour Roll of ‘like’ donors LLB, Wilbar, South View, Youngdale, Cudlobe, Arda/Freeway and Rodgers Red Angus) is one of Canada’s premier seedstock producers, Ferme Gagnon! It is important that we feature at least one hometown donor with “Building the Legacy”, and, with National Convention being hosted this year in Quebec City, Yves, Diane and Francis Gagnon are excited to represent Quebec Angus producers as a major donor to our Building the Legacy 5 Foundation fundraiser. And we are extremely proud and honoured to feature a pick of the FGAF heifer calves in this year’s BtL campaign! Ferme Gagnon Inc. is a family business that has been in operation for 30 years, specializing in superior genetic cattle production. While you may be more familiar with Ferme Gagnon as among Canada’s most notable and successful Simmental producers (including their highly recognized and sought-after Fleckvieh genetics), their Black Angus herd has been quietly growing for 20 years as well. The operation consists of approximately 160 registered Simmental cows and 40 Black Angus cows with a total herd of approximately 500 head. Ferme Gagnon is one of Canada’s most outstanding and globally recognized seedstock producers with an intense focus on performance, growth and carcass qualities. Their program has typically utilized extensive use of A.I., as you can see in the pedigrees, and their latest Angus calves are by Peak Dot Eliminator 718Z-1707175; these offspring are a sight to behold! To know the quality of these heifer calves, please consider the impressive yearling bulls that Ferme Gagnon offered in their 2016 bull sale. Here is a link to their catalogue: http://fermegagnoninc.com/sell.html. You’ll find the Angus bulls on pages 11-13 and we’ve pictured a couple here. Please also know that these bulls averaged $5,786 with the top selling Angus, Lot 31, fetching $8,000. If you purchase this donation, you will be accessing one of our nation’s ‘best kept secrets’ in Angus genetic advancement. Just ask Dave or Andrew at Johnson Livestock. The only time in recent memory that Ferme Gagnon has sold one of their Angus females -FGAF Tibbie 901W-1512051-she ended up in the Johnson Livestock herd at Peebles, SK and has performed extremely... exceedingly, even... well. 901W has produced multiple high-selling sons, two of which are used at progressive Angus seedstock outfits like JPM Farms Ltd. and Pederson Livestock. So outstanding has 901W been that she is already designated an ELITE DAM after only her fifth calf... so you know Ferme Gagnon’s program, with its only female sold within the Angus fraternity becoming a breed-leading cow in short order, produces truly ELITE females!   And if you purchase this donation, you get to have your pick of their sexy heifer calves and elite cows in the making.    Thank you very much, Ferme Gagnon! Your donation is extraordinary and will bring untold value to its buyer!

Johnson Livestock’s Pick of their 2016-born heifer calves

Johnson Livestock of Peebles, SK, is a family-run operation, owned and operated by David and Anne Johnson and their son and his family, Andrew and Laurie, Brielle, Maya, Desta and Indy. Johnson Livestock has grown from the original 160 acres to over 8,000 acres of hay and pasture land, and around 700 registered Angus cows. Johnson Livestock has graciously donated an outstanding 2016-born heifer calf! The Johnson family ‘stepped up’ in a major way by selecting from their ‘top tier’ of calendaryear calves to offer you a heifer with an elite and progressive pedigree coupled with a super-cool phenotype. She’s a real baby ‘cow-in-themaking’! Johnson Livestock have produced some of our nation’s most impressive cows and this baby beauty will surely be one of them. “I can’t help but admire the “commitment” of four generations, and a fifth in training, to their personal values, a way of making a living in agriculture and making their mark as one of the leaders in the Angus breed.” -Bob Toner (talking about the Johnson Family)

A few words from Andrew...

The Floressa cow family started with the purchase of HF Floressa 42P, the high-selling bred heifer at Hamilton Farm’s sale. She was Reserve Senior Champion at Agribition. 42P had two heifers, which we offered choice at the Common Denominator sale, held at Soo Line. The Net Worth bred was purchased by Remington, and the Four Season heifer returned home, which today is our favourite cow. At the Remington dispersal, the JL Floressa cow-calf pair was the high selling lot, with the cow gong to Blairs.Ag and the calf to Lewis Farms. In the 2014 Lewis sale, we asked Rob Holowaychuk of OBI to look at the Lewis bred heifers. Rob said he walked into the pen without a catalogue and said to himself, “I want that one for Johnsons. When later checking the catalogue, it was a Bismarck heifer off the Final Answer heifer from the JL Floressa Net Worth cow. LFE BA Floressa 97A was purchased for $10,750. Her first bull calf JL Active Duty sold this spring for $26,000 to Cory Richardson of Eastend. 97A’s second calf by SAV Renown is Johnson Livestock’s donation heifer to the 2016 Building the Legacy sale. SAV Renown sired the lead off sire group this spring at Schaff Angus Valley where they sold very well. There are very few Renown calves in Canada in 2016. Renown is a full brother to Resource and Rito 1439. These sires are all out of the Blackcap May 4136. 4136 is a full sister to our foundation sire SAV Four Seasons.

your choice: heifer calf by Kill Switch lot

Clevely

Choice of 1 of 3 Red Six Mile Kill Switch 135Z daughters born in early February 2016 SIXM 135Z ~ #1695060 One of our key ‘new generation breeders’ in Quebec, former Canadian Director Jérôme Richard & Anik Marchand and family of Ferme Clevely, have come up with a great ‘pick of the herd’ donation that will definitely help Canadian Angus ‘build’ our ‘legacy’!

Coming up on 10 years as active purebred Angus breeders in Canada, Jérôme and Anik operate with the herd name and letters of “CLEVELY” and “CLVY”, respectively, under CAA Membership #5271761. They are a young couple both working in the agriculture industry with a burgeoning Angus operation from Canton de Cleveland in Quebec, our Convention host province. Jérôme is an inspiring young cattleman who is providing tremendous support in organizing many aspects of this year’s Convention as well as promoting it to fellow Angus breeders. Jérôme identified his willingness to contribute to “Building the Legacy 5” very early and he enthusiastically proclaims his “honour” at being involved with this great event; of course, in my opinion, the ‘honour’ is, truly, all ours to have such quality, excellence and benevolence as Jérôme and Anik are offering. They have two donations including this herd ‘pick’ so they are definitely ‘digging deep’ to offer their very best and create huge opportunity for this buyer as well as for our Foundation and its objectives. I think Jérôme wants to make a ‘statement’ with their donations this year, and what a generous ‘statement’ they are making! Pictured here is Kill Switch 135Z, sire of the three heifer calves you will choose from. 135Z is the 2015 National Western Stock Show Champion Red Angus Bull as well as an RBC Supreme Champion Bull Top 10 Finalist at 2014 Canadian Western Agribition. Denver Judge Shane Bedwell claims that “(Kill Switch) shows one of the most correct hind leg structures that (he) has seen on a Red Angus bull.” And praised him for “how fluid and athletic he is when on the move, especially considering the mass and power he possesses.” 135Z combines the supremacy of the outcross sire Basin EXT and maternal strength of the “Flower” cow family. Each of these 135Z daughters is born in early February 2016 and Jérôme would like you to make your selection by or in October. Added value for this year’s “Building the Legacy” live pick buyers: transportation from eastern to western Canada, and vice versa will be provided by H S Knill Co. Ltd. and/or Canadian Angus. Red Six Mile Kill Switch 135Z One calf (Dam: Red Clevely LGT Tilly 130Y-CLVY 130Y1659904) has Red Majestic Lightning 717SGMR-IMP 717T BW +2.8 RED BASIN EXT 45T5 Sire RED BENCHMARK BETTER BEEF -1632889 as a maternal grandsire. The third calf (Dam: Red Clvy SDC Gamma 113U-CLVY 113U-1482995) is out of Red Soder Canyon 126M -SGFC 126M -1134764 daughter. This young herd has tremendous selection pressure on udders and soundness as you will see this on the dams of these heifer calves from which the buyer of this donation will select.

Thank you very much, Ferme Clevely -Jérôme and Anik! With such an impressive donation, you are definitely building a legacy… on many levels and in many ways!

Originally part of the legendary Noiseux family who were recognized by the CAA in 2012 as 50-Year Heritage Members, SANE has been breeding Black Angus cattle since 1993. They select the best genetics available in North America to have functional animals that meet the needs of our industry. They pursue efficient, low-cost cows of moderate size with an added focus on calving ease, performance and optimal EPDs. They put forth significant effort to publicize the SANE prefix through cattle shows, auctions and bull tests. The SANE prefix can be found across Canada including SANE Surv Jestress 206P, dam of Timber Trail Gridlock, bred by Doug Fisher, Ontario and LLB Angus, the Brown family, from Alberta. Another female, SANE 6595 Blackbird 409N sold to Everblack Angus, the Gibson family in Alberta, who produced Hi Test 20A, the higher seller in their 2015 Everblack bull sale. Luc has been the driver behind the three-breed “Partners for Progress” sale in Quebec that will hold its 6th edition on October 22nd, 2016. You know that saying, “When [someone great] speaks, you better listen”? Well, that’s the way I feel about Dave & Lynne Longshore of Bar-E-L Angus; when they make a breeding decision, we’d best pay attention! Coming off another outstanding bull sale, the Longshores are excited to donate once again in BtL5, and their embryos last year were a definite highlight selling to CAA Director Bob Hahn. This year, Dave & Lynne are providing their most ‘leading edge’ breeding opportunity for your selection. Bar-E-L has an embryo inventory but they are flushing a number of cows to exciting bulls the first week of May. At ‘press time’ we don’t know the outcome of their donors, so the Longshores are donating two choices among a variety of matings of two embryos each. When you consider the donors in their herd–Elite & Premier Dam Magnolia 143K (dam of Unforgiven AND Natural Law), Bar-E-L Magnolia 15T (dam of Anchorman and Unequalled), Tiptop of Rainbow Hills 51U (dam of X-Cel, Iron Will and Paramount), DBRL 94T Bride 4W (dam of Director and Antidote)–all I can say is, HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG! Balanced with their exciting new sire choices, this will be a definite BtL5 feature! So pay attention to social media in the coming weeks and we’ll lay out the options for you. They will be part of “building the legacy” in YOUR herd, for sure! Thanks, Bar-E-L; you are an inspiration!

Elmgrove Pride 5U ~ S A V Resource 1441

KM 5U ~ #1583031 | IMP 1441Y ~ #1707295

The Round boys at KBJ have been breeding great ones for decades. And folks… this will be the FINAL breeding season for one of Canada’s most outstanding Angus breeders, including Past CAA President Jim Round. On December 15th, 2016, their complete herd dispersal will close the chapter on cows at KBJ Round Farms. And their donation to BtL5 will help write a bit of history itself. Elmgrove Pride 5U is one of the very best cows at KBJ with high selling bulls each this year (Herd Builder 71C) and last year (Espresso 71B). This mating is to one of the most iconic bulls in the breed: Resource, the most popular sire in the Genex lineup due to his ability to sire growth, carcass merit and maternal ability in a desirable package. He combines efficiency and natural fleshing ability with thickness, muscle, masculinity, superb structure, feet quality and authentic breed character. Resource sons have unprecedented performance and industry appeal, while his daughters are making superb brood cows with high quality udders and abundant milk. Please note Resource is maternal brother to the sires of Bandura’s embryo matings in Lot 190. What a cow! I am thrilled to write about this amazing KBJ donation and am equally sad to know that KBJ will be out of our business by the end of the year. Consider grabbing this donation of their very best genetic matching and stacking.

CLVY 227W ~ #1510786 | IMP 101Y ~ #1762026

1 package of 3

Here is the second donation from Jérôme & Anik, following their “Clevely” heifer calf lot. This embryo package is sired by Sankey’s Justified 101, 2013 NWSS Grand Champion Bull, for which there is also a semen donation in Lot 206. Justified dominated the show ring in 2012 and 2013, also winning Grand Champion at the American Royal and NAILLE in 2012, among many other titles. He is an excellent option to use on current Canadian show bloodlines and is a show bull combining outstanding phenotype with exceptional EPDs. He offers a bit of a ‘twist’ in his genetics and is extra complete, so you should be able to use him on a wide variety of females when you want some “pizazz”! The donor dam is a daughter of Ankonian Werner Wildfire 96 purchased in-dam from Ferme Gagnon (see their generous donation earlier as well!) by a daughter of the great Leachman Saugahatchee 3000C, 710T. She has a grandson breeding cows at Ferme M.J. Hamelin, an 80 head commercial operation. 227W has been a solid producer for Ferme Clevely, and they have progeny from this very flush running the pastures at Canton de Cleveland. There are 2 x #1 embryos and 1 x #2 in this package from one of Canada’s most exciting ‘new generation’ Angus breeders. Please Sankeys Justified 101 take a look at this exciting genetic combination! 1 package of 3

Wheeler’s Stock Farm has donated this embryo lot ‘from the heart of their herd’. The “Auburn” cow family is among their elite, and 76T in particular is a standout. Auburn 76T is a proven producer who offers tremendous rib shape, great feet and udder structure and a presence that demands your attention. If you want to produce powerful cattle with eye appeal, Auburn 76T is a sure bet. Her daughter, MFW 76Z, was Reserve Intermediate Heifer Calf Champion at Agribition and sold as a sale feature in the 2012 Power and Perfection Sale to Wildcat Creek Ranch. Her son, MFW 69C, was one of four flush brothers that averaged $8,000 in Wheeler’s 2016 bull sale. Sire of these embryos, Magic Mike, is ‘heir’ to the great female maker Indeed 104H who is a breed and breeding legend. HYB 189Z was a feature in the 2012 Bar-E-L bull sale and since then has shown his true value in the quality of his progeny. Most recently, Mike sired the Grand Champion Female at the 2016 National Western Stock Show in Denver, pictured here. His sons in both Wheeler’s and Bar-E-L’s bull sales this spring proved very popular. Magic Mike is an easy calving bull which has been used on heifers with great success. Finally, at the 2014 CWA, Magic Mike’s full sister was named Grand Red Bar-E-L Kassie 129B, Magic Mike daughter that was Champion Red Angus Female for Red Wheel Auburn 76T the Grand Champion Female at the 2016 National Western Bar-E-L and Six Mile. Reckoning is one of the most talked about Herd Sires U-2 has raised. Since being their 2014 High Seller to Six Mile for $46,000 ½ interest, he has blown away expectations at both outfits. He has already sired champion females at Agribition & Denver and has out-bred himself on a number of top herdsire prospects on offer in both the Six Mile and U-2 bull sales this spring. Six Mile had ‘h-yuge’ success showing and promoting Reckoning progeny last fall. He has already earned world-wide interest and become one of the most exciting young Red Angus sires on the planet. He is passing on his big foot, dark red color and awesome hair to all his progeny. Added to the Six Mile breeding program in 2014 for his calving ease from U-2 Ranch, his calves are showing lots of promise with extra style and bone mass. It will be rewarding to watch for the impact his calves make on the Red Angus breed in the future.

And what is ever more highly sought after than a Six Mile female? And 116T is another GREAT one! She has been a Premier and Elite Dam since 2013, or her first year of eligibility. One daughter is retained in herd while another was sold at the Gibson’s female sale. In 2014 she was bred to New Era and resulted in Spencer, working as a breeder bull in the United States. Likely her ‘piece de resistance’, a son named of Taurus, sired by Game Face. Taurus is a 2-time Denver Grand Champion and sired Six Mile’s high selling bull this year who has a donation in BtL5 in Lot 211. “Such is the stuff that dreams are made of…”

Since coming up with the idea for “Building the Legacy” at the Winter CAA Board meeting in 2012, CAA Past President Kevin Blair and team have supported EVERY sale. And HOW! You don’t have to dig very deep into Blairs.Ag’s latest “The Pursuit of Excellence” bull sale catalogue to know the importance of this donor female to their increasingly globally recognized program. Page 4 and 5 showcase the five sale features by Yankee 12W and Red Ringstead Kargo 215U. This pairing led to Blairs’ high selling bull last year, Bingo 592B, who sold for $55,000 ½ interest to Power Plus Genetics in Oklahoma. Given the impact this mating has had on dozens of programs now, what could possibly surpass such an outstanding combination? Well, how about when you breed this stellar cow to the $76,000 Red U-2 Renown 193C, himself a son of Reckoning 149A, the $46,000 ½ interest Six Mile purchased in 2014. I am going to use a perhaps over-used term when I speak of Renown: OUTCROSS. Look at his pedigree. See the bottom side? The Cowards of Wood Coulee are rather new Angus producers… what an eye Russ and Sarah have… and what an exciting breeding program they’re developing! See their next donation as well in Lot 201. Outstanding from birth (he was the “Legends of the Fall” Grand Champion all-breeds bull show, Farmfair 2013), Redrich believes that Aftershock is the most complete bull they have raised: sound structured, outstanding breed character and presence, thick topped, extremely long bodied with superior performance and growth. 2015 CAA Black Angus Show Bull of the Year! 2015 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) Supreme Champion Bull! Never defeated in the show ring in 2015–he truly was the “King of the Ring”!!! Canadian Director Ryan Currie has kindly donated 2 packages for his Quebec-based bull that came all the way from Houston, BC as Poplar Meadows’ top seller in 2014 at $15,000, believed to perhaps be a record for the highest selling Black Angus bull at auction in BC. Well, his ‘thunder’ most definitely ‘struck’ in 2015 as he OWNED the show circuit! 22A was many-times champion and made enough friends through the year at Angus shows in Louisville and Denver that he is now global!

You get above average growth from this son of the 2014 Farmfair Supreme Champion Bull and CAA Show Bull of the Year, Thunderbird 146Y, balanced with the maternal excellence of 313U, selected from the Mountain View herd and one of Tanya Belsham’s most important embryo donor dams. One of Canada’s most exciting breeding programs is Poplar Meadows at Houston, BC, Tanya Belsham and family. While Poplar Meadows received their 50-Year CAA Heritage Membership Award last year, that is the ‘original’ Poplar Meadows, or Tanya’s parents, Frank & Dianne Strimbold. Tanya and her sister Lia are also Angus breeders. Tanya has achieved public recognition across Canada, however, with her “PM” prefix competing coast-to-coast. She produced the BtL5 Lot 198 donation which was purchased from her, and she has dominated show rings herself these past few years, with Thunderbird being named Supreme Champion Bull at Farmfair in 2013 and Breakout being named RBC Supreme Champion at Agribition in Regina, our de facto national all-breed championship.

May-Way Breakout 1310

She found Breakout at May-Way Farms, Inc. in Nebraska. The Flory family has a long history in agriculture, since 1918. Angus came in 2004 and the herd has continually grown. The registered and commercial herds number over 150 and 225, respectively. Tanya attended their 2015 bull sale, and the rest is of “legacy” proportions. There is even more to appreciate about Breakout; his EPD profile is of ‘curve-bender’ status. Growth, carcass merit and maternal strength with moderate birth weight; he covers all the bases. From a pedigree perspective, his dam is very unique, with limited relatives anywhere in the Angus ‘world’. And if you need further, I might suggest final, convincing, how about this? At Agribition, both Six Mile Ranch Ltd. and Hamilton Farms purchased interests in him; how is that for an endorsement?

Natural Law gained national status when his daughter, Bar-E-L Erica 74A won Brandon, National Show, Farmfair, Agribition and Show Female of the Year. He is a powerful breeding bull whose sons are equally impressive. He is a massive, powerful breeding stud. He is massive in his spring of rib, deep sided and full of meat. Bar-E-L believed he would improve quality in many areas when they wrote their sale footnotes in 2012, and this promise has been exceeded. Natural Law was their 2nd high seller in 2012 to Tanya Belsham, Poplar Meadows Angus. The Longshores believe he is among their very best bulls ever produced, and have considered his calves every year to be some of our best, including Bar-E-L Natural Law 52Y show champion at Agribition, and exceptional sons in their bull sale. Tanya and her Poplar Meadows team have also enjoyed selling the super-stout sons of Natural Law in BC ranch country. His dam Bar-E-L Magnolia 143K is an outstanding producer at BarE-L. Their 2009 high seller, Unforgiven, is a maternal brother. 143K has been a herd bull-producing dam and mother of outstanding females including grand dam to Magnolia 15T, Reserve Champion at the 2009 World Angus Forum. Yes, his legacy is just being determined, and Natural Law is a positive powerhouse of a bull! His dam is an outstanding 1407 daughter descending from the herd bull-producing Enchantress cow family which produced Stevenson Fortune 425C. For years now, Cudlobe have been marketing 5S sons as heifer bulls. But with many daughters now in production, David reports they are extraordinary and annually raising some of their best bulls.

Cudlobe In Focus 5S

David is very proud of a picture he took last spring of 5S’ dam’s feet–she is an “M”, so born in 2002–which show the degree to which they are ‘picture perfect’. At the time of the World Angus Forum, a group of New Zealand Angus folks evaluated both 5S and his dam highly for soundness, Cudlobe Farms particularly their feet, and I know that New Zealand Angus folks KNOW The Bolduc Family feet! So, in functional traits, 5S is exemplary: not only on the ground but in 403-625-0981 (Dyce) ~ 403-625-0499 (David) the udder makeup of his producing daughters. bolduc@platinum.ca (Dyce) ~ cudlobe@platinum.ca (David)

The Bolduc family has been breeding Angus cattle for almost 50 years. In their program, genetics were 100% Canadian-based. This was the time when our American friends came to ‘the great white north’ in droves to access our genetic pool. One of Cudlobe’s early foundation bulls is this donated lot, Cudlobe Stemwinder 13N, born in 1981 and a “Straight Canadian” pedigree. Cudlobe was among our nation’s preeminent show herds at that time. 13N was shown 13 times at major shows, being named Grand Champion 6 times including every year from when he was a calf (thanks to Judge Rob Matthews) to when he was a 2-yearold. Cudlobe Stemwinder 13N More importantly, however, 13N contributed a substantial legacy as a sire, including 274 registered offspring. He was a larger framed bull and was big, but in a good sort of way. Unlike the “dinosaurs” of this era, 13N was a well-made frame score 7 with high performance and high growth coupled with the ability to calve easily. The reason may have been his smaller skull considering his size; he was used on heifers and had some birth weight but the calves were made right so calving was effortless.

Cudlobe Farms His dam was a classic Angus cow, and would produce into ‘senior’ years at The Bolduc Family Cudlobe, including a full sister to 13N - Cudlobe Black Angel 11L - UGA 11L - one of Sydenstricker’s notable cows. 13N was tremendously sound 403-625-0981 (Dyce) ~ 403-625-0499 (David) and lived until he was 11. And his legacy can be yours, today. bolduc@platinum.ca (Dyce) ~ cudlobe@platinum.ca (David)

He is also the sire of Ferme Clevely’s embryo donation Lot 193. Gumbo Gulch Creed 94S

JNI 94S ~ #1328102

I remember the first time Lee & Dawn brought out this stellar sire. I’ve always associated “Gumbo Gulch” with highly maternal Angus females. But what stature and power this bull possessed. What free, easy pattern of movement. What impressive foot and leg structure. I thought he was a quintessential Angus bull. When Miller Wilson exhibited 94S at our 2009 World Angus Forum, I thought he was one of the most impressive Angus bulls I’d seen. So impressive phenotypically, but his greatest legacy would come through his offspring. Truly, the best was yet to come! What do DMM Miss Essence 61W (2012 Show Female of the Year / Farmfair Supreme), 7Y (2013 Show Female of the Year / Farmfair Supreme), 14Y (calf on the 2011 Show Female of the Year / Farmfair Supreme) and DMM Creed 75W (2011 CAA Show Bull of the Year / Farmfair Supreme) all have in common? They are all direct offspring from 94S. And they were all CAA Show Females or Bull of the Year AND were Supreme Champion at Farmfair, winning brand new Dodge trucks for their owners. How’s that for a ‘creed’?

Dennis Thomas’ love of the show ring dates back to 1968, when he exhibited a Holstein heifer given to him by his grandfather, Virgil Thomas. Little did he know his passion for cattle would lead him to begin 5T Land and Cattle 20 years later. While his start to the business was a humble one with the purchase of five registered heifers from Wolfe Angus Ranch, it was one worth investing. Within four years, Dennis and Louis Thomas entered their first female at state shows and also the National Western in Denver.  Today, 5T Land and Cattle has 200 females that produce and perform in east Texas. These females produce big-boned, deep 5T Power Chip 4790 ribbed bulls and heifers that perform well in the pasture and the show ring. Owners Louis and Dennis Thomas along with manager Dave Rademacher work continually to produce quality Angus genetics. One of Canada’s rousing young breeders, Brad Gilchrist, believes 5T has certainly got it ‘goin’ on’. Particularly with their production of this February 2014 model yearling bull. He was named the Reserve Grand Champion at the Fort Worth Stock Show, and currently sits in 5th place for the AAA’s Roll of Victory standings in the “Junior Champion Bull of the Year” category. Expressing the exciting Dameron First Class and EXAR Blue Chip 1877B genetics, Brad is bringing these genetics to Canada. Thanks to the friendly folks at Bouchard, one of last year’s most acclaimed American bulls is now available in Canada. Acclaim was a featured and high selling bull at the 2015 Jindra Angus bull sale in Nebraska. He offers calving ease with exceptional performance and maternal strength. Nick Jindra describes him as, “long, thick, deep and just flat good. He’s a favorite all of the way around combining calving ease and performance in a lengthy package.” His first calf dam is a beautiful Impression daughter with a great udder. You can look for Acclaim to lead the next generation of high performance sires; he is in the Top 1% for weaning and yearling weights but holding a reasonable birth weight ratio as well (top 20%) and top 10% standings in maternal traits Milk and CEM. For those of you motivated by the $B, Acclaim is certainly worthy of some with +172.06, again, the Top 1% for $B.

Many were bowled over by Acclaim at the National Western Stock Show in Denver last year as a Pen of 3 Member for Jindra. His dam first-calver dam is a beautiful Impression daughter with a great udder. I can’t express my joy when Tiffany offered this donation. Believe 46B was the historically-selling ‘talk of Canada’ last year when Col. Poley dropped his gavel at $146,000. Astute cattlemen from across North America converged on the Alameda auction mart for one of the most exciting bulls in Canadian Angus history to sell. Richmond Ranch ‘stepped up’ in the most profound way when they said, “We MUST own Believe 46B”. And while he was ‘the talk’ all of last year, wait until you see his calves... that buzz is becoming a roar!   Believe 46B’s sire is the ever-popular Young Dale Excaliber Young Dale Believe 46B 32X out of a cool 2-year-old Grace cow by Panarama 66T (remember this World Angus Forum Futurity stud?). The dam is directly linked to the same cows that produced Hogan 3Y and Young Dale Monarch 12E; the power in Believe is NO accident! Barry and Robb Young know that Believe 46B is one the most intriguing herd bull individuals to come from their globallyrecognized and respected Young Dale Angus program! From his performance, thickness and balance, to his wide-based movement (he is full-strided with great foot structure), you, too, will KNOW how important 46B is. Topped off by a great disposition and recommended for heifers AND cows, Believe is a true ‘designated hitter’ for any program. One of the most exciting genetic opportunities to come along this year! Earlier this month, 177C sold for $115,000 to the Vancuren, Vikse and Gardner/Smith families. There are nine semen syndicate shareholders in Canada and Six Mile retains some semen rights. While marketing plans are still being finalized, the news I hear is that there will likely be NO MORE SEMEN available in Canada for the foreseeable future. I’m extremely pleased and honoured that Darren, Dave, Brody and the Gibson family agreed to this donation. And I hope you are, too!   High Caliber brings pedigree, performance, phenotype and maternal merit all together into an impressive resume. This is the only bull Six Mile sold this year sired by the two-time and Red Six Mile High Caliber 177C reigning Denver Stock Show Grand Champion Bull, Taurus 519A. Taurus was the high selling bull to J6 Farms, NE in their 2014 bull sale and has gone on to be a masterful breeding sire. 177C’s dam is a “CAA Elite and Premier Dam” boasting an average wean index of 109 on four calves. She maintains a beautiful balanced udder as do her daughters, and Six Mile could not be more enthusiastic about this cow. She was flushed last spring and bred back within 21 days, proving her Sunberry/Vikse/Diamond T/Six Mile fertility. One of Canada’s greatest bull sales this spring was “Cow-Boys” on March 28th in Virden, MB. Just ask our BtL5 Auctioneer, Chris Poley, what he thought; he sold and managed that day. It was an impressive offering of Black and Red Angus genetics and breeders across Canada took notice. Someone who was already taking notice was Saskatchewan Angus Association Past President Mike Howe, Howe Family Farm, Moose Jaw, SK. Mike is a lifelong Angus man who has been producing with a purpose since he was a child. He selected Lot 69 that day, Red Fraser Answer 505C, sired by RKY MTN The Answer 10X, purchasing him for $20,000 from Fraser Farms of Melita, MB.

Red Fraser Answer 505C

505C is an attractive son out of Fraser’s Black/Red carrier son of Final Answer who has sired some great offspring of both colours. The dam, 31X, is a big-hipped cow with a great udder, a true ‘model’ Angus cow. Frasers are confident that 505C is absolutely the ‘answer’ to work on heifers and leave daughters who will make productive cows. Flash forward a couple of months and here this outcross, exciting bull’s genetics are… for your selection! Mike was excited to donate 10 straws of ‘in herd use’ semen on his exciting new purchase. I’ve been told that Howe’s offering of bulls this year was another one of the greatest productions in our nation. It seems he’s fixing to make his ‘best’ even better. And he’s sharing this unique genetic selection with you. Sweet!

Impressed by the low maintenance and maternal qualities of Angus, Darren & Joanne decided in 1992 to purchase their first purebred Red Angus females. They toured many herds and carefully acquired the best maternal genetics possible focusing on functional cattle with an emphasis on feet and especially udders. Today, they have reached the pinnacle of success… and they just keep striving to do better. The Unger family of U-2 has donated semen on Red U2 Mission 61W in the past. This year, a donation of ‘in herd use’ semen from one of his greatest sons must be considered a feature. Red U-2 Entourage 282B, is the ‘carcass bull’ that Red Angus

Red U-2 Entourage282B producers have been waiting for, in the Top 10% for almost every

single carcass trait, and in the Top 26% for Carcass Weight. Further, he balances superior growth with lower birth weight and higher calving ease. 282B is a full brother to U-2’s 2014 high seller, Reckoning 149A. Many top cattlemen pursued 282B and he was one of the truly outstanding bulls to sell all of last year, ½ interest selling to Weber Red Angus in South Dakota for $58,000, their 2nd high seller that day. It comes as no surprise that 282B’s dam, Anexa 271Y, after only her first two calves (Reckoning and 282B) has become one of U-2’s most influential cows ever! One of Canada’s highest global profile herds, their donation is for Red Northline Chuck Norris 305X, co-owned with CD Land and Cattle, the Domolewski family at Taber, AB. Chuck Norris was named the 2011 Reserve Bull Calf Champion at the National Western Stock Show, then returned to Denver in 2012 to become the Champion Intermediate Bull and again in 2013 to be named Reserve Senior Champion Bull, an incredibly rare three-time Denver division champion. He was also the 2012 Farmfair Reserve Grand Champion Bull, one of CAA’s national Gold Shows.

Chuck Norris displays classic phenotype, superior structural soundness, explosive performance and a balanced EPD profile. Like his ‘tough guy’ namesake, he is about BIG performance coupled with moderate birth weight. The Domolewski clan purchased Chuck Norris in 2010 as a five-month-old-calf and he was already an eye catcher. He’s extremely good footed, narrow fronted and with plenty of top. They have been very successful using him with everything Northline Angus from heifers to old cows; he throws a smaller birth weight calf and easy calving Howard & Wendy Schneider and family with plenty of performance. CD has more Chuck Norris offspring than anyone, 780-977-0023 and report expansive rib shape in his progeny. The pictured quilt was Gail’s donation at the 2009 Red Round-Up. I purchased it and asked Gail to ‘surprise me’ with the design. Having worked closely together on “Autumn Angus Gail Wildman Towaw Cattle Co. Ltd. Legacy” from 2007-09, she chose fall colours. Isn’t it grand?! And now you could have one, too! 780-785-2091 dgwildman@msn.com www.towawcattle.com

Kathy Fee original needlepoint of “Canadian Colossal”

In summer 2015, Donna Donaldson made the largest donation of Angus memorabilia to Angus Central with the provision that items be sold over time as a fundraiser for the Canadian Angus Foundation. A longtime Foundation supporter and organizer, Donna is excited to see she and John’s collected Angus ‘works’ find new homes in the coming years. This 17’ x 21’ framed needlepoint is of one of the most important Angus bulls in history and was done by former CEO Doug Fee’s wife Kathy. It is a copy of the Queen mother’s dining room chairs that Kathy took a photo of when she had lunch there. She then made a pattern and created the needlework. This was a highly sought-after donation item at a past CAA Annual General Meeting. Donna was the winning bidder, and her JD Farms Donna Donaldson philanthropy gives you opportunity to own this Angus 250-642-3563 collectible. Many thanks, Donna, for your extraordinary jdfarms@live.ca benevolence with four donated items in BtL5!

Canadian Angus Association Commemorative “Centennial Family” #5 Bronze

In 2005, the Canadian Angus Association commissioned notable western artist Gina McDougall-Cohoe to fashion 25 of this commemorative bronze in recognition of our first 100 years as a breed association. Then CAA Board member John Donaldson and his wife, Donna, JD Farms, purchased the #5 limited-edition bronze. John would serve as the CAA President in 2009-10, during the World Angus Forum, representing all Canadian Angus members as our greatest statesman and most highly effective host and communicator. Donna is donating their bronze. We have not sold one of these since current CAA President Tammi Ribey and husband, Brian, purchased our last one in “Building the Legacy 2” in Guelph, ON. There are only 25 of these in existence and this is the first one to resurface through public JD Farms Donna Donaldson auction. 250-642-3563 ~ jdfarms@live.ca

The power and detail of the bull is outstanding! Based on the extraordinary interest in our donated print last year, we are excited to let you know that your Canadian Angus now owns the right to market these prints in Canada. Official Canadian Angus Black Print “Maternal Watch” framed print #2

At the celebration of our centennial in 2005, CAA unveiled our ‘first-ever’ official art: two works by artist Wendy Risdale. 10 years later, with those prints virtually sold out, we commissioned new ‘official’ art. Last year at Convention, your Foundation was pleased to present the new prints and we are offering #2 of 50 in BtL5. The prints are done on canvas this time around, so are much more like an ‘original’ painting and are attractively framed in rustic, dark barnwood. I think this would look good in your living room, don’t you?

Official Canadian Angus Red Print framed print #2 “Time out”

Same deal as with our ‘official’ Black Angus print above, our ‘official’ Red Angus print is proving very popular. Everyone loves the calves in “Time Out”, Wendy Risdale’s new work for us. Quality takes time, and we worked with Wendy for three years in developing our new prints. Framed just like the Black print above, if you have both colours of Angus, wouldn’t it be great to have the matching Risdale set in your home or office? If you have the 1996 prints, please consider our new art to complete your collection. And as with all art or artifacts in BtL5, your CAA will ship your selection anywhere in Canada.

Handcrafted commemorative Angus knife One of a kind! A Heinz Leber (Hudson Hope, BC) made knife that was purchased at a Peace River Field Day pre-1999; a fundraiser at that time, and now once again. The knife is made of high-quality steel (D2) with an elk or moose horn handle. The real deal maker is there is a ‘perfect’ Angus head carved in the brass, where usually wildlife were depicted instead. A commissioned, custom made knife that meets a high end collection standard with makers mark on the knife and knife sheath. No better cause for this never to be duplicated knife.

Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society “Ron McHattie” Tie

My CEO counterpart with the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, Ron McHattie, passed away last September at the age of 63, a month before his planned early retirement. He had served since January 1997. The Society launched a limited-edition charity tie with 100% of proceeds going to Ron’s family’s chosen charities MacMillan Cancer Research and Marie Curie. The tie is a symbol of their respect and loyalty to the much respected Chief Executive, who was responsible for phenomenal development and expansion of our breed in the UK and Ireland. These charities are very close to Ron’s family and your CAA was delighted to support them with the purchase of 10 limited-edition ties last fall from our great friends in the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society.
