W

elcome one and all, to September’s edition of The Basis. Had a good summer? Good. Us, too. And we’re happy to be able to say that September sees the warm(ish), balmy months go out in style. First up, we’ve got the guys behind Ultimate Pro Wrestling coming to Street this month for the first time. Also, Toploader are playing just down the road in Shepton Mallet – and we’ve got five pairs of tickets to give away! There’s also a rare chance to see one of Texas’ finest Gospel singers, a stunning exhibition at the Atkinson Gallery and a feature on local youth clubs. Seriously, how do we fit it all in?

TOPLOADER ARE COMING TO SHEPTON MALLET! And we’ll all be dancing in the moonlight…

T

he band Toploader are playing at Collett Park, Shepton Mallet on Saturday, September 16 as part of Shepton’s Big Weekend – the Sunday Market will return to the town the following day from 10am in the town centre. Well known for their Top 10 hit Dancing in the Moonlight, the band have been performing together since 1997 and have sold well over two million. In total they’ve released four albums, the last one being Seeing Stars, which came out in May of this year. Supporting the band will be Nick Parker and the False Alarms, who really should need know introduction, but if you’re one of the few who haven’t

heard of them, head to nick-parker.co.uk and check out some of their videos. The other support is the Italian band Ylamar, who produce hauntingly beautiful tracks with an original slant – the band comprises a singer/guitarist, keyboard player and beatboxer. To check them out (and we strongly recommend you do) go to their website at www.ylamar.com. Tickets for the event are just £10 each, and are available from www.collettfestival.co.uk as well as the Shepton Mallet Tourist Information Centre. It’s guaranteed to be a great evening of music, so hopefully see you all there.

WIN FREE TICKETS TO SEE TOPLOADER!

T

hat’s right, we’ve got five pairs of tickets to give away for the night, so you’ll get to see Toploader plus the two support acts absolutely free! To enter, all you have to do is email us here at dean@super8media.co.uk with Toploader in the Subject line. And that’s it! It couldn’t be easier. We’ll draw the winners around September the 10th, so good luck!

The idea behind this regular event is to provide great food (the Daniels all-day breakfast is not to be missed) in a mellow atmosphere with great music. For the launch event though, Oska Zaky will be playing a live acoustic set. Daniels’ Breakfast Club is open from 10am-3pm.

New York’s loss is Glastonbury’s gain, and we can thank a book called The Mists of Avalon, which Liz Gilbert read while working at an animation studio in Manhattan and tells the Arthurian legends from a woman’s point of view. “I had always wanted to visit England as my mother’s family comes from here,”says GFM presenter Liz. She looked at a map and was delighted to see Glastonbury was a real place. “I booked a vacation, instantly fell in love with the place and got a job at the town’s Assembly Rooms.” That was 30 years ago. Liz is still in Glastonbury, a shareholder at the Assembly Rooms, singing with a local band and working for Higos Insurance in Somerton. Her GFM programme is called Miss Gilbert’s All Sorts, and broadcasts live from noon-2pm on Saturdays. “The show is all about the music,”says Liz in her New York accent, “playing songs not aired on mainstream radio. We are righting a wrong. “I play old and new, and doing the show led me to discover how much good new music is out there. GFM broadcasts on 107.1 FM and glastonburyfm.co.uk. Philip Welch

ver fancied playing music, singing, or reading your favourite poems to an audience? Or are you just looking for a relaxing space to be entertained on a Sunday afternoon? Then get along to the next Pennard Acoustic Café on September 10 in West Pennard village hall. The organisers promise a friendly, creative space, where performers of all ages and abilities are invited to hone their craft in one of the open-mic slots. They will then treat you to a performance by a featured artist, who will answer questions after their show to help those starting out on their journey, or help the more experienced improve their skills. So far they have attracted the stellar talents of Ashley Reed (ex-Albion band), Sharon (Lazybyrd) Martin, and Andy Badman to perform, with Oska Zaky, Lazy Daze, James Rippingale, Nick Balura, Folk in the Vale, Ruth Blake, and many more local artists coming along to join the open-mic sessions. Alongside the music and poetry is a ‘Brilliant Makers Club’ craft corner, where works of art are created, while the café serves delicious home-baked goods and a range of hot and cold drinks. The next event will be on Sunday, September 10 from 2-5pm. Doors open 1.45pm and the cost is £2 per adult (kids are free but adults must stay with them). Open-mic sign up on the door only. For more details please contact nittenrose@gmail.com, call 07591 733402, or check out their Facebook page.

Come to Parish Council meetings to express YOUR views Street Parish Council are starting to look into the needs of older people in Street. At a public question time, Street Parish Council (SPC) were told by local resident, Dave Filburn, about the closure of day centres for older people in Street. As a result of this, Street Parish Council has set up a working group to look at the provision in Street. In October, all local agencies concerned with facilities for older people will be invited to a consultation so that SPC can draw up a wellinformed strategy. Cllr. Nina Swift, who is chairing the group, said,”We are keen to react to concerns expressed by Street residents. The council meet in The Parish Rooms on the third Tuesday of the month, and we encourage people to come to public question time to speak with us at 7.15. It is very informal and friendly. This new initiative has begun because Mr Filburn did exactly that.”

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!

O

n Friday 15th September, Ultimate Pro Wrestling arrives in Street for its debut appearance at the Strode College Sports Centre. As far as we know, wrestling hasn’t come to the town for a number of years, and UPW’s familyfriendly, gloriously over-the-top action has been wowing packed audiences all over the West Country. UPW was established at the beginning of 2015, and is co-promoted by Mark Fry and Robbie Mutch. Since its start, it has attracted wrestling stars from all over the world including the USA, Japan, New Zealand and Portugal. Some of the wrestlers that have appeared have previously worked for the biggest companies in the world, including World Wrestling Entertainment, Impact Wrestling, Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling. UPW also prides itself on using not only foreign talent but also the hottest wrestlers currently fighting in the UK, and this show is no exception.

Marty Scurll

Mark Haskins

Fight night For their first show in Street, UPW are bringing Kid Lykos (who is one third of the Calamari Catch Kings tag team), Mark Haskins (also known as ‘The Star Attraction’) and Marty Scurll (current Ring of Honor star and the newest member of the worldrenowned Bullet Club). Tickets are priced at just £12.50 per Adult or £5 per Child (Under 16). As well as the wrestling, there will also be the opportunity to meet the wrestlers themselves and pick up any merchandise. Tickets will be available on the door on the night, but as UPW events tend to fill up quickly, we recommend that you buy them before the big night at www.upw.uk.bigcartel.com. The organisers say that if the night is a success then it’ll become a regular event, and that’s only got to be a good thing for the town. To find out more about Ultimate Pro Wrestling, head to their Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/UltimateProWrestling and their website at: www.upwuk.bigcartel.com.

WRESTLING ARRIVES IN STREET!

FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2017 STREET, SOMERSET STRODE COLLEGE SPORTS CENTRE, STREET DOORS: 6.30PM SHOW: 7.30PM

NEW Improved Options available on Orchard Health Plan Until recently, deciding on parasite control options for your dog wasn’t without its challenges. How to identify the problem, which one of a wide range of solutions would best suit the purpose and get to grips with the problem. The whole subject was a potential minefield, and the final answer might have involved a combination of ‘spot-on’ products, tablets and collars – confusing, to say the least. Now, however, we are delighted to announce a new and unique ‘all in one’ product called NexGard Spectra that protects against key parasites and comes in the form of a single tasty tablet. The tablets are like chews, they are easy to give and, unlike when using a spot-on product, your dog can be stroked and cuddled straight after treatment, and swimming or bathing won’t stop it working. It can be given with or without food, and dogs love them. Now parasite control is as easy as giving a treat to your dog – and it’s fast acting too! At the moment, NexGard Spectra is only available for dogs, but don’t worry, ‘new improved’ cat options are available too, protecting against the major, key parasites. You’re probably familiar with Stronghold, which protects against the essentials – i.e. fleas and roundworm. Now there is Stronghold Plus, which also protects against ticks, too! These products are available on our Gold Plan, with prices starting from £17.99 per month. As well

RED BRICK BUILDING YOUTH CLUB

Young? Bored? Looking for something to do? Katherine Clarke explains how a club at the Red Brick Building could be just what you’re looking for…

T

he Red Brick Building Youth Club was established in February 2013. The club is run in partnership with Mendip YMCA and sponsored by The Glastonbury Town Council and Somerset County Council Youth and Communities Service. The club is open from 6.30-9pm on a Friday evening during term-time, and is located in the firstfloor studio at the Red Brick Building. The club is fully accessible via a newly fitted lift and has a hearing loop. It is open to 11-19 year olds, costs just 50p a time, and is run by three youth workers. The club attracts between 20-30 members each week, and we still have room for more. The club is centred around the needs and interests of its members. They are involved in every aspect of the club’s operation, including planning termly programmes of activities – and in some cases leading the activities themselves. They are actively involved in member and staff recruitment, mentoring new members to help them settle in, event planning and are always asked to contribute to any key decisions.

Fun activities Activities are always fun and engaging, and are often linked to an issue that has been raised by members – for example, we have used green screen movie-making to explore and discuss bullying, or use interesting craft activities to raise a greater awareness

BASIS

THE

of mental health and the support available. Whatever the topic, we always make it fun, and the members are brilliant at coming up with inspiring suggestions which keeps it interesting for the youth workers, too. In addition to the planned activities we have a wide range of equipment that members can use, such as table tennis, air hockey, foosball, Nintendo Wii, board games and arts and crafts. This is to ensure there is something to capture everyone’s interest. Our members say they really enjoy coming to the club because it is a fun, safe and welcoming space that they feel they can call their own, socialise with their friends and get support if they need it. MILES AHEAD

M

iles Pike is an astonishing singer with an beautiful and powerful singing voice, and he’s come over to the UK from America for his first tour – thanks to support from Street’s Harvest Church. Miles will be playing a number of concerts in the area during September, finishing at Elmhurst Hall in Street on Sunday, September 24. We managed to throw a few questions Miles’ way to find out more about the man behind the music… With a voice like yours you could have sung almost anything, so why Gospel? I was raised almost exclusively around Gospel music. Gospel quartet music uniquely lends itself toward the extremes of the human voice, and I’ve always loved the harmonies that go hand-in-hand with it. What brings you to the UK and Sweden as your first tour outside of the US?

QUIZ

My wife Martha and I have met friends through the Stamps-Baxter School of Music in Nashville, Tennessee and have kept in touch over the years. We are a fulltime ministry that’s been going for nearly 11 years full time, and our desire is to go wherever the door opens regardless of international boundaries. Your new album, Grace of Life, is going to be just you and Martha together, which is musically quite a new direction for you… Martha and I have been performing regularly in concerts ever since we got married, but this is definitely a first. This whole album is piano/vocal driven and is more worshipful and meditative than anything we’ve done before. It is a thematic departure and feel from what we have done in the past, but then again so is every album we have done over the years! They all have their own personality.

A SLICE OF FOODIE HEAVEN

O

ne of the highlights of the Wells calendar, the Food Festival, returns on October 8, and promises to be bigger and better than ever! You’ll be able to eat your way around the world at the Artisan Market and Street Food stalls starting in the Market Place, test your culinary knowledge in the Charlie Bigham’s Discovery Zone in the Recreation Ground, and encourage the next generation of cooks in the Morrisons Children’s Zone in the Bishop’s Barn. NEW KARATE CLUB IN STREET

S

treet Shotokan Karate Club will be opening its doors at the Victoria Field Club from Sunday, September 10, and Tuesday from November 14. What makes this Karate club different from the rest though is that only the ‘traditional’ Shotokan syllabus will be taught in the classes. And each class has two sessions: the first is fundamental training for all students, while the second is advanced and applied training for the senior students. Sensei Joe Andrews has been training for nearly 20 years, and has worked with some of the best names in UK Karate to ensure his training is as rounded and thorough as possible. Sessions cost £5 for adults for the first session and then just a further £3 if you want to stay on for the second one. And the first session is completely free, so what are you waiting for? Contact Joe on 07849 628714 to find out more about the classes and Shotokan Karate for yourself.

A

fter the success of last year’s exhibition, the Anonymous Art Show at Glastonbury Galleries is returning with 140 artists creating up to three pieces of art, each one just 10 x 10cm. In total there are 350 pictures, which comprise original oils and watercolours, prints, photographs, etchings, drawings and textiles. And the artwork is very reasonably priced, as each one costs no more than £40. Each purchase has to be made totally anonymously, as it’s only when you’ve bought it that the artist’s identity is revealed. The exhibition runs from Saturday, September 2 through until Saturday 23. It’s a fantastic idea, and you can find out more about the exhibition and Glastonbury Galleries at www.glastonbury galleries.com.

MATERIAL EVIDENCE

he President of the Royal West of England Academy, Stewart Geddes, is bringing his Material Evidence exhibition to the Atkinson Gallery at Millfield from Monday, September 4 through to Wednesday, October 11. Geddes has been the RWA’s President since September 2016, and his aims are to develop wider links with the artistic community and to progress the archive of artwork the RWA has been growing since the 19th Century. Head to stewartgeddes.weebly.com to find out more about Geddes’ work. Whether you’re a fan of art or just someone looking for something interesting to do, we recommend you pay a visit to the Atkinson Gallery for this exhibition. Geddes’ striking artwork sits perfectly on the walls of what is undoubtedly a stunning place to exhibit. The Atkinson Gallery was founded in 1992, and holds a number of major art exhibitions throughout the year which are open to the general public. Not only does the gallery aim to bring some of the finest artwork to Street, but it also aims to support young, aspiring artists, too. Some of the past exhibitors at the gallery include Andy Warhol, Albert Irvin OBE, Sir Anthony Caro and Terry Frost. You can find out all about the Atkinson Gallery’s past, present and future exhibitions by heading to atkinsongallery.co.uk. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

IT’S GAME ON AT BREAK N DISH!

T

he Break N Dish club is a hidden gem in Street. Found on the top floor of the Bayliss Centre, you go through a unassuming door on the left side of the building, and then when you reach the top of the stairs, you walk out into a social paradise! Spread over the whole floor of the large club are five match play dartboards, five professional-quality Pool tables, four full-sized Snooker tables and a large social bar area. We found the welcome to be warm, the drinks to be reasonably priced and the freshly cooked food delicious – you really need to try their homemade burgers. Break N Dish has been run by Rob and Nelm since 2010, and their philosophy is that Break N Dish should be a family-friendly environment, where people can come along, have fun and relax. It’s a members-only club and membership costs just £15 a year for over 18s – you can come along for free to try out the club’s facilities for yourself, and you can bring along a friend with the voucher on the opposite page. The social aspect of the club is helped by the regular tournaments and competitions they run. There are Poker nights twice a week, darts, snooker and pool tournaments, and not forgetting their legendary Scalextric nights, and that’s what we came to look at. It doesn’t matter what age you are, Scalextric is something that you’re sure to have come across in your life. Originally produced in the 1950s, Scalextric is a toy that’s stood the test of time and is still going strong today. But you can go one step further. Organised racing

events provide great entertainment and incredibly competitive racing. At Break N Dish they have held organised race nights fortnightly for around two years The circuit is set up on the Sunday at the club for practice, then on the Monday night the serious business of racing takes place! It doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female, still at school or retired, it’s a level playing field, which is what makes it such great fun. They race a four-lane, 45-foot circuit that’s set up at table height for everyone’s ease and the best view of the track. Monday night’s racing consists of four 25-lap sessions completing 100 laps in total, which is close to a mile in length! It’s only £3 to enter to race, and all entry fees go into a pot for that night’s prize money. You just need to bring your own Scalextric car to join in. So why not come down and show us how good you are! If you want to find out more about the club, then head to the Break N Dish Facebook page, where competitions and upcoming events are listed. The club holds a lot of charity events too, for local groups such as the Air Ambulance and the South West children’s Hospice. They held a Snooker marathon two years ago that raised around £16,000 for charity! Their next event is a charity Bingo night for the Brittle Bone Society on September 9, and you don’t have to be a member to join in the fun for that event.
