COLLETT FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES HEADLINERS FOR 2018 And you’d be mad to miss it…

T

March 2018

SUNDAY MARKET RETURNS TO SHEPTON It’s recently been confirmed that the monthly Sunday Market will once again be returning to Shepton Mallet for 2018. Packed full of independent traders, the market was a huge success when it was launched last year. The market will be held on the third Sunday of the month until the end of the year – apart from in August, as it clashes with the Mid-Somerset Show.

BASIS 05

THE

he 2018 Collett Park Festival in Shepton Mallet has recently revealed that the headline act playing at their Saturday night concert will be Los Palmas 6, who are widely regarded to be one of the best Madness tribute acts on the circuit – search for them on YouTube and you’ll see for yourself that they capture the fun and energy of the Nutty Boys from Camden Town perfectly. So much so in fact that one of the band has played in Madness, and it’s not unheard of for members of Madness to guest with the Los Palmas 6, too. The Collett Park Festival runs from June 9-10. Collett Park Day on the 9th is a free event that runs all through Saturday. Los Palmas 6, plus support, will be on in the evening, and tickets will cost just £10 (£12 on the door) and are available from the Tourist Information Office in Shepton. Children under 16 get in completely free (limited to one child per adult). On Sunday the 10th is the Children’s Festival, which is another brilliant free event.

This month Rabbit Hole Media are putting on yet another fantastic event in aid of a deserving charity, this year it’s Children’s Hospice South West that will be benefiting. On March 24 from 7pm at The Bocabar you will be able to enjoy a whole host of fantastic acts, including Kevin and the Destroyers and Oska Zaky. The evening itself is hosted by Chloe Warren, who will also be performing with her awesome band. Entry is by donation, and there is also a raffle which is already boasting some brilliant prizes. Please make sure you head down and show your support. The (in)famous Priddice brothers have been busy working on their eagerly anticipated album. There’s no release date yet, but I have heard some early offerings and I can happily say that it’s going to be brilliant. I also want to give a shout out to Restless Youth. I had Theo on my ‘Live from the Caravan’ show recently and I have to say what a pleasant and educated guy he is. His music really captures the current state we live in and he actually knows what he is talking about without it being a hollow gesture. Georgie Robbins

HEDGE LAYING EVENT A HUGE SUCCESS The Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society’s annual hedge laying competition was an enormous success, with 22 competitors in all – nine in the Novice class and 13 in the Open one. Everyone produced some stunning work but the winner of the Novice Class was Rob Wood of Dorchester and the winner of the Open Class and Championship was Chris Chivers of Midsomer Norton. This year saw the inaugural vintage tractor run, with 12 tractors parking at Wainwright’s Moonhill Quarry driving to the field and then off on a 10-mile run. This was very well received, and is something the organisers are looking to expand this next year.

People who are able to make the date are urged to visit Street Library on March 8 at 10am, 11am or Midday to give their views to Somerset County Council officers, who are holding consultation meetings on that day. 300 people attended their meeting in Somerton, so let’s beat that total!

PLACE YOUR BETS!

here’s something new coming to Wells, with the glitz and glamour of the casinos of the South of France! The James Bond-themed Casino Royale charity event will be taking place at the Wells Town Hall on Saturday, March 10, and the fun kicks off at 7pm. You can look forward to supercars featured in the James Bond films to welcome your arrival at the Town Hall, along with a fire dancer! You’re then welcomed into the casino itself with a delicious cocktail – and more Bond-themed cocktails (such as the Americano from A View to a Kill and the Vesper Martini from Casino Royale) can be bought at the bar. Then you can try your luck at the casino tables and enjoy the entertainment for the night, which will be provided by Dan Lealman who will be entertaining everyone through the evening with songs from the Bond films, and some fantastic Rat

Pack tunes. Dee Dee Wild, one of the founding members of Pan’s People, will be there with her troupe Pan’s Fans – and doing a bespoke and new routine for the event. The event is being hosted to raise valuable funds for two very worthy local charities: Heads Up and Wells Air Cadets as part of the Mayor’s fundraising program. Hopes are high that the night will be a massive success and help to go some way to meeting the Mayor’s target of £10,000 by the time his term finishes in May. More specifically, the Air Cadets are trying to purchase their own flight simulator, which costs around £5,000. Heads up is a local charity that provides valuable support not only for their clients, who have dementia and learning difficulties, but to their carers, too. Tickets cost £20 for the whole event, and can be purchased from Wells Town Hall and The Swan Hotel.

We are a local charity working with individuals across the Mendip area who are affected by mental health issues and other difficulties

Our Memories Workshop

Mental Health Day Services

Our Workshops are held on a Wednesday and Friday every week, 10am-2.30pm.

“Improving the Mental Health and Well-being of adults through Empowerment, Support and Hope”

Our Memories Workshops not only enable those living with Dementia to spend time with others in a safe, nurturing environment but also provides vital respite for carers and families. Activities are very much based on individual preferences, and can include but are not limited to, Arts and Crafts, Cooking, spending time in our Healing Garden, Sharing Memories, Singing, Dancing, Flexercise and Tai Chi.

Heads Up provides activity-based learning and development workshops for individuals with mental health needs, including adults with dementia, learning disabilities and physical disabilities. We provide support to enable individuals to establish links to their local community and, in particular, access information such as Education, Volunteering and Employment Opportunities.

INTERVIEW WITH: FEEDER

F

or over 25 years now, Feeder have been producing some cracking stadium anthems. From Buck Rogers to Lost & Found via High and Just the Way I’m Feeling, their back catalogue is packed full of songs that demand to be cranked up whenever they’re played. They have dominated the festival circuit over the years, and now The Godney Gathering have the absolute pleasure of announcing that Feeder will be headlining their 2018 festival. Georgie Robbins recently spoke to singer/songwriter and all-round rock star Grant Nicholas about their up-and-coming appearance… We are very excited to welcome Feeder to Godney Gathering. Have you played in Somerset before? Only the obvious like Glastonbury, but other than that, not really. Having said that though, we’ve done so many gigs over the years it’s hard to remember all of them. You realise we are cider-loving people down here. Are you willing to get involved in that? I love cider! I tell people I grew up in Newport but I actually come from Chepstow, so there was a lot of cider drinking going on when I was growing up.

BASIS

THE

14

You’ve been going for 25 years now. What motivates you to keep going? I’m just very inspired to write new music. I’m very lucky really, as a writer, that I am writing more now than I ever have. Hopefully I am writing some better stuff than when we first started, but yeah, I just love doing it. It started off as a dream and a hobby when I was at school with my first band, and now I’m still doing it. I feel we are still doing it because we can still be doing it. We don’t want to outstay our welcome, but I think we’re still doing a good job of it. Hopefully we can still do it gracefully and not loose that spark. Have you ever done anything where you thought ‘ooh, why did I do that’? Oh yeah, I’ve done all sorts of things I probably regret; the most obvious one was when I smashed a two-grand Jazz Master guitar. We were at Download, and I think we just had a weird gig so halfway through, I don’t why I did it either because I would never do that with one of my babies, but I got a bit carried away and smashed my guitar on stage. I still have the neck which I have just fixed on to another guitar. It was a real Jimi Hendrix moment!

KEYRING LETTINGS

Finding an affordable property to rent isn’t always easy, but thankfully there’s a ‘not for profit’ Community Interest Company there to help…

S

hape Mendip is a pioneering partnership for multi-agency services supported by a programme of transformational projects. Their partners are public, private and voluntary organisations, and KeyRing Lettings have now been part of their hub for just over a year. Since KeyRing Lettings moved to Shape Mendip in February 2017, their portfolio of managed properties has grown substantially, and they now produce a regular, online newsletter for landlords full of helpful tips and information. You can also check out their website for a blog packed with informative features, as well as a list of the property they currently have available to rent. KeyRing Lettings’ Manager, Jane Weddell, says: “In the four and a half years that KeyRing Lettings has been trading, we have helped over 70 people (a mixture of families, couples and singles) into affordable homes, of which at least 40 of those people were either homeless or threatened with homelessness. Since moving to Shape Mendip we have become even more accessible. We are no longer tied to an office; we are out and about, in the community and meeting our clients’ needs.” We continue to work closely with both our landlords and tenants, and we continue to provide a very personal, high level of customer service and support, especially around benefits. We have an abundance of tenants looking for long term, affordable properties, and to help us attract properties to cope with this demand, we are offering a full rent guarantee

on all of our fully managed properties.” If you are a landlord with a property to let, or if you want to subscribe to their newsletter, contact KeyRing Lettings by emailing them at welcome@ keyringlettings.co.uk, visit their website, which can be found at www.keyringlettings.co.uk, or contact them by phone on 01749 681356 if you wish to speak to them in person.

Low voids, guaranteed rent and a great service. We are a ‘not for profit’ agency, providing a comprehensive letting and management service for landlords and tenants in Mendip.

FAR CRY 5

FROM: Ubisoft FORMATS: PC, PS4, Xbox One

The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

O

ne of our gaming highlights of the year (and it’s a very good year for games) is Far Cry 5, which is finally released in the month of March. Set in the US, the storyline centres around a cult in the fictional town of Hope County in Montana. You take on the role of a Sheriff’s deputy sent in to arrest the cult’s leader. Fans of previous Far Cry games will find a lot to like here. While a lot remains the same, there’s some juicy new features, including a character generation system, the ability to recruit people to fight alongside you and the ‘Fangs for hire’ system, where you can tame wild animals.

PROFILE

Distance 5.5 miles Terrain Moderately level

A Trip to Ponter’s Ball Discovering the ancient man-made bank

T

o begin, park at the far end of Bretenoux Road (alongside Glastonbury’s Redlands Estate). From Chalice Way, go through the railings into Cinnamon Lane and walk to Lower Edgarly Farm on the right-hand side after the T junction. The road bends left and the first stile, the start of our footpath, is on this corner; proceed to and through the Millfield Prep School campus. After passing the static caravans, follow the hedge until you come to a wooden bridge on your left; cross this and the orchard, turning right at the car park. Leaving the Millfield grounds, walk straight ahead, and then turn right onto the farm track; our path continues to the left beyond the hedge. At the next field, head for the opposite corner, joining another farm track; when this track turns sharp left, the footpath goes straight on. At this point the path forks: one track is fairly obvious, following the hedge on the left, but we need to fork right, heading diagonally across the field. As you reach the top of the rise, you will see the next stile in front of you. Climbing this stile brings you onto the ancient man-made earth bank known as Ponter’s Ball. Nobody seems to know for sure what this is, or when it was made, but I like the suggestion that it formed part of a 3rd Century BC Celtic Sanctuary. Mythologically, it is the horn of

THE

Capricorn in the legendary Glastonbury Zodiac. Moving on, the next stile takes you across a wooden bridge which goes over the dyke alongside the earthwork. From here, proceed to the metal gate in the far right corner of the field, and follow the line of similar metal gates to eventually join Kennard Moor Drove; turn right and follow the lane. The River Brue will become visible on your left; where the road turns away from the river there used to be a footbridge. You would sometimes see a pike lying in wait here where Coxbridge Brook joins the main river. Continue up the lane and over the stone bridge. One could simply rejoin Cinnamon Lane, or cross the field to the left; the footpath emerges back in Chalice Way.

Shopping in Shepton is a lot more fun that it used to be. Heather Bryson-Banks check out the town’s growing number of independent traders.

March 2018

From a shopper’s point of view, Shepton Mallet is ideal for a day out. I can work my way down the High Street, weaving seamlessly in and out of charity shops, bakers and independent craft stores – stopping for coffee and cake at one of the many friendly coffee shops. New businesses include the beautiful designer range to be found at BS Luxury Lifestyle, as well as funky furnishings in the old Twice as Nice building, a new coffee shop next to the Market Square and the arrival of a new collectables shop next to the Amulet – all to open in March/April. Down from The Emporium in the historical Market Square, and the fabulous vintage and artisan boutiques are nestled among good quality international restaurants, and more thrift stores, ending up at a magical fairy-themed gift and traditional sweet shop (The Fairy Godmother Shop). Don’t take my word for it and countless ‘hip’ celebs who’ve hashtagged #SheptonVintage, see for yourself! Make use of the free parking on a Friday, and grab a bargain!

BASIS 29

THE

T

here was a time when Shepton Mallet was seen as really rather drab. It had the cider mills of course, a few cool events like the Lantern Parade, Carnival and Collett Park Festival, but there was no reason to have a ‘day out’ in the small historical market town. In the last 18 months though, it has become a real destination. Shepton Mallet now has everything from vegan health food shops and fair trade cafés, to craft stores, and now a chic but affordable ‘Vintage & Artisan shopping quarter’ in Town Street. The revitalised Friday market with its unique army of independent ‘suitcase sellers’ lit the initial fuse, which ignited into Shepton’s hugely popular monthly Sunday Markets. Innovative local traders and entrepreneurs then began renting out the empty shops, filling them with beautiful antique collectibles and fabulous vintage clothes. Shepton’s Artisan Quarter is a bustling, creative and friendly community, where everyone seems to encourage and support each other.

Is your Dog Protected Against Infectious Disease?

March 2018

Wirrall Park Road, Glastonbury BA6 9XE

01458 832972 info@ovg.co.uk www.ovg.co.uk

Independent veterinary practice, offering friendly professional advice Spacious, purpose-built facilities with free ample parking We advise on domestic pets as well as farm animals

The best in animal care, the best in client care During the month of March, you can have a complete vaccination course to bring your dog’s vaccination back up to date for just the cost of an annual booster – a saving of nearly £25! Routine vaccinations are automatically included in our health plans!

BASIS 31

THE

Here at Orchard Vets, we believe the correct vaccinations for your dog are a key part of a preventative health care strategy. Vaccination prevents infections that otherwise lead to serious illness, or might even be fatal. But what vaccinations should your dog have, and when? We often hear that once dogs have had one vaccination, this does not need to be repeated. But is that true? Protection against the viral diseases distemper, infectious hepatitis and parvovirus is certainly long lasting, and re vaccination is recommended every three years. The other vaccination that is advised for all dogs in the UK is against leptospirosis, a bacterial disease causing liver and kidney failure that may be fatal. Leptospirosis can also be passed to people, and thrives in the cool, damp British climate. For this reason, leptospirosis vaccination is routinely recommended in the UK, though it may not be in some other countries. Protection from the leptospirosis vaccine unfortunately tends to wane after 12 months. If vaccination has not been carried out for over 15 months, a revaccination course, with two injections four weeks apart is advised to ensure protection. It can be easy for your pet’s vaccination to slip your mind, but we don’t want their protection against potentially fatal disease to slip, too!
