irst a spot of sad news for those looking forward to the Sat in a Field festival. Just as we were going to press we heard from the organisers that the event was being cancelled. Putting on a festival is an expensive and risky business, so they made the decision to pull out now before they lost too much money. It’s a brave move, and we wish the organisers all the very best for the future. On the positive side though, we’ve got a cracking issue for you. You can find out first about Shepton’s new radio show, get all the info on the Rubbish Art Project, and check out the biggest Events guide we think we’ve ever done. NEW MARKET OFFICIALLY OPENS IN STREET

new Mendip market started trading this week in Street on Thursday and was officially opened by Cllr Dick Skidmore, Chairman of Mendip District Council and Cllr Nina Swift Chairman from Street Parish Council. Mendip District Council has worked in partnership with Street Parish Council to bring the new market, adding to others run by the District Council in Frome, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and Wells. Councillor Nina Swift said: “I am pleased that by working with Mendip Council, Street now has a weekly market. We hope it will go some way to

So many new tracks are being released this summer that I can hardly keep up! Lee Rahn, Last One Home and Cosmic Ninja are some of the many musicians adding to the summer listening list. Links to all of these can be found on my website: www.georgiethejourno.uk. If you are looking for quality music to get you through your day then I recommend checking out their new music. Rock Against Cancer promoter Max James has just announced a heavy gig at the King Arthur for October. Over the past few years Max has organised some incredible events to raise money including the up-and-coming shindig at The Victoria Club in Street on September 1. I will keep you up to date on both of these events. The Venue in Wells are back with their monthly Sunday sessions, and the first one is Liam Howard on July 7. This normally kicks off at 6.30pm. Entry is free but a small donation is welcome for the musicians. It’s a fun, relaxed and easy Sunday afternoon, and these events will be held on every second Sunday of the month. Finally, I have to get another shout out to Last One Home who are on fire right now. Not only are they lovely guys but their music really is going places, with recent support slots with Crazy Town. WE HAVE A WINNER! Each year we as a community are given a fantastic reminder of the quality and sheer talent we have in the local area. The GFM songwriting competition, founded by presenter Ian Liversidge, has been the breeding ground for many bands and musicians who have been offered a range of prizes. This year the pool of entries gave the judges an even tougher decision than ever before. With such a wide variety in finalists, it was up to the six judges to make those all-important decisions. The overall winner of the Ben Kench Trophy was Maaike Siegerist, who impressed the panel with her delicate tones and pure songwriting skills, a strong runner up were local rockers Last One Home who rounded off the evening with a rather energetic and memorable performance.

SHEPTON TO LAUNCH ITS OWN RADIO STATION Shepton Mallet is host to loads of amazing events, like Collett Festival, the Lantern Parade, and our illuminated carnival. Isn’t it about time there was some way to broadcast these to the rest of the world? The wait will soon be over, as SMCR – Shepton Mallet Community Radio launches in September! With enough volunteers and support from the community, SMCR hopes to provide engaging, informative and entertaining content, plus an eclectic mix of music, online 24/7. Broadcasting from a specialist studio in the heart of the town, the station will promote local bands, producers and DJs, as well as streaming live from big events like Glastonbury Festival, Pilton Party and NASS. Volunteers with an interest in media, IT, music,

On Saturday, July 7, St John’s Church, High Street, Glastonbury will be holding an Open Day so that anyone who is interested in the next stage of what is proposed for the interior of the Church can come along and meet the Architect. GREAT BRITISH TENNIS WEEKEND COMES TO WELLS Wells Tennis Club will open its courts for free play, coaching and activities as part of the Great British Tennis Weekend on Saturday, July 21. Aimed to encourage more people to take up the sport for fitness or competition, the Great British Tennis Weekend is co-ordinated by the Lawn Tennis Association across the country. From 9.30am until 2.30pm the club will be hosting drop-in free children’s and adults’ coaching with LTA Somerset Coach of the Year, Kevin Durney. There will also be a raffle with tennis-themed prizes and refreshments, including strawberries and cream. On July 14 at Midday, a new war memorial, commissioned by Street Parish Council will be dedicated in the memorial garden next to the United Reform Church. The new memorial will replace the existing World War I memorial that is in poor condition. It will honour those that were killed in all conflicts since 1914.

VINTAGE FAIR RETURNS TO WELLS THIS JULY The ever popular Vintage Somerset Fair pitches up again at Wells Town Hall on Saturday, July 7. A number of select, well-established traders will be offering vintage clothes – for ladies, gents and children – jewellery, accessories and textiles, as well as vinyl records, lighting, homeware, books, toys and collectables. “We’ve a super bunch of traders with a whole range of fabulous vintage goodies at affordable prices,” said Sara Blair of Vintage Somerset. “It’s a great opportunity to pick up something original, possibly quirky, including things you didn’t even know you needed!” Vintage Somerset’s Fair is open from 9.30am through to 4pm at Wells Town Hall in the Market Place. TURNING WASTE INTO ART

Two people are bringing recycled art into Shepton Mallet in a big way, so we decided it was time to find out more about The Rubbish Art Project

A ‘Shepton Sheep’ made from recycled materials in a children’s workshop run by artist Fiona Campbell will be displayed in the town centre in coming weeks, as well as a giant ‘disco’ polar bear made from old DVDs and CDs that will raise awareness of plastic pollution in the oceans. Mandy Briggs said, “We would love to hear from local businesses who might want to donate waste materials or partner with us to create art installations for the town. local group is on a mission to turn Shepton Mallet’s plastic waste into art sculptures for an outdoor exhibition throughout Shepton Mallet during Somerset Arts Week. Co-founders of The Rubbish Art Project, Lucy Smith and Mandy Briggs, who met while working at Glastonbury Festival, are raising awareness around plastic waste and encouraging people to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’. As a community recycled art initiative inspiring social change, the project’s aim is for Shepton Mallet to become the first town to turn their plastic waste into art while making reductions to the volume of plastic that goes to landfill. Bringing together all parts of the local community, from young children to elderly residents, the project runs workshops with local artists that create educational and inspirational art installations using recycled and donated materials from residents and local businesses. Lucy Smith said, “The Rubbish Art Project’s ethos is to build on the community spirit of Shepton Mallet, bringing everyone together and transforming the town centre into a unique and vibrant creative arts market town that will attract locals, tourists and art

he Mid-Somerset Show is less than two months away and preparations are gathering apace, entries are coming in, trade stands are being sold and car parking passes purchased, but there is still plenty of time to get involved. The Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society are looking for keen and willing volunteers who are happy to give up a few hours to help put together the largest FREE entry agricultural show. There are so many different areas to get involved with, including ground preparation, show day stewarding of our many different sections – livestock, horses or arts and crafts. If you’re looking for something fun and affordable for the kids this summer holiday, then Off the Streets could be exactly what you’re looking for…

ff the Streets is an annual week of events for children held between August 6-10, and is run by the Children’s World charity in Glastonbury. Off the Streets provides a large range of high-quality educational, entertaining and inspiring activities across Glastonbury for children, young people, their families and even a flash mob for the whole community! Charity director Paddy Hill said: “It’s great to be able to continue with Off the Streets. We’ve received fantastic feedback from the community over the years, and thanks to support from Glastonbury Town Council, Somerset Community Foundation and Perry’s Recycling, we’re delighted to be able to provide another week.” Off the Streets is a mixture of workshops and events. The workshops include… Parkour – increased to two days this year. Music and Songwriting – write and record a group song in a day. Drama and Storytelling – with David from Tor Theatre Cookery – cook a range of foods to take home. Scrapstore Creations – create fairytales from scrap at YEAST Scrapstore. Farm Days – feed the animals and learn farm and forest skills at Paddington Farm. Science – experiments, explosions, education and inspiration. Magic – learn tricks and perform them to an impressed audience. Dance -– with Angela from Tor Theatre. Circus Skills – unicycling, juggling and stilts. Birds of Prey – owls and falcons you can meet and fly. Drama – create a play in a day with Maxine.

Some of the Off the Streets events are free to join, while others have a small charge that ranges from 50p to £8. Please check the booking form for the cost of each activity. THE RETURN OF THE KING

Wells Theatre Company are once again bringing the Bard’s work to The Bishop’s Palace with one of Shakespeare’s most powerful dramas, King Lear

ollowing the success of last year’s critically acclaimed debut production of Hamlet, Wells Theatre Company is returning to The Bishop’s Palace to perform another Shakespeare masterpiece: King Lear. Neil Howiantz plays Lear, and the production is directed by Edgar Phillips. The play will again be performed in Promenade, a format which proved such a hit with residents and visitors. In the first act, the audience walks with the actors from scene to scene through the rooms and grounds of the Palace while enjoying the dramatic action.

A kingdom divided King Lear has ruled over Britain for many years. As age and ill judgement overtake him, he divides his kingdom among his three greedy and conniving daughters. Misjudging their loyalty, he finds himself stripped of all the trappings of state, wealth and power that had defined him. Shakespeare’s Lear is undoubtedly one of his supreme achievements, particularly noted for its observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship. As George Bernard Shaw wrote, “No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear.” This year you can pre-book a delicious BBQ prepared by The Bishop’s Table at a supplement of just £5.50. BACK TO THE JUNGLE

ext month will see the House of El return for the second of their Throwback Sessions at Bocabar, Glastonbury. This very special occasion will be a journey back to what is probably the most influential era of UK dance music, celebrating the wonder years of UK Garage and Jungle. Both of these British genres produced many pioneers who have gone on to find major success such as Goldie, Roni Size, MJ Cole and Artful Dodger. So, back to the early 90s we go to celebrate this amazing era of British music. The event will see the return of Glastonbury hometown favourite, DJ Fivestack. Fivestack spent years playing on pirate radio, and eventually ended up running his own station: Buzz Fm. He is currently helping to run the highly successful Globaldnb.com, with a regular show now every Friday 6-8pm.

In addition to Fivestack there will also be a second special guest, coming all the way from London: DJ Son, a classic Garage connoisseur who is looking forward to bringing back the London underground scene for this joyous occasion. Meeting new people can be difficult when you’re on your own, but a group based in the South West is helping to bring single people together

.P.A is a not-for-profit Singles Social Group that has been established for over 40 years. They are run by their members for their members, and their mandate is to help people who are single, sociably active and aged 40-plus to get more out of life by providing a warm, welcoming social environment in which they can make new friends and join in a wide variety of interesting events and activities. As single people themselves, they know how difficult it can be for some people to approach new groups and go to social events by themselves. There are six S.P.A branches across the South West, and the local Wells and Mendip group are an energetic and enthusiastic branch who enjoy organised events including a weekly Social Evening. left known as Jacob’s Ladder. As the road curves around, turn right into Wick Hollow. Alice Buckton’s route continues into Paradise Lane, and then onto a footpath which no longer exists. Instead, turn right into Bulwark’s Lane, and then either left at the footpath, following the signs to Glastonbury Tor, if you want to walk across it, or follow the road to Wellhouse Lane, turning right if you want to bypass the Tor. You will arrive at the Red and White Springs where you may partake of the waters if you wish. Turn right into Chilkwell Street, and then left into Bere Lane. Where the main road turns sharp right at Fisher’s Hill, cross carefully and go straight ahead into Hill Head. At the top of the hill there is a gate on your right, go through this and walk over Wearyall Hill past the Holy thorn(s). The path emerges into The Roman Way. Turn right, and cross the main road via the crossing on Pomparle’s Bridge for safety. Make your way back to your starting point to enjoy a well-earned drink at the Bocabar. tarting at the Red Brick Building, walk out through the car park, past the Zig Zag Building and turn left. Go straight on over St Bride’s Mound (Beckery Island) to the kissing gate in the left-hand hedge, and walk towards the river Brue. You should’ve arrived at St Bride’s Well – marked by a seat and a Glastonbury Thorn tree. We are following the route described in the early 1900s by the Chalice Well founder Alice Mary Buckton, as her suggested Glastonbury pilgrimage. Turn right to walk along the right-hand river bank to Porchestall Drove, then turn right along the Drove. Snow’s Timber Yard is built on a site of archaeological interest previously known as The Mount, which was levelled to make way for it.
