THE

S

aturday, January 26 marks the very first Wake Up Wells Community Day, which will bring together different community groups to celebrate and showcase life in Wells. The idea for Wake Up Wells is the brainchild of Emma Lefevre and Kirstie Harris. Every January Wells Cathedral is cleared of all its chairs for cleaning, which gave the pair the idea to host a community day in the Cathedral itself – and Wake Up Wells was born! The Cathedral will play host to a ‘fresher’s fair’ of information stalls, activities and performances. Over 80 groups, three choirs, musical theatre, dancers, a jazz group and a number of school music groups are all signed up to ensure that the first Wake Up Wells event sets a high standard for the ones that will follow. There will also be a range of events at Wells Museum too, including craft activities for the whole family and community workshops – including Dementia Awareness, the Barriers and Benefits of Collaboration, Culture and Heritage Awareness, and Leadership for Teenagers. Later in the day will be a beautiful lantern procession, supported by Somerset Skills & Learning.

Street Parish Council’s logo may be an ichthyosaur but your Parish Council are working hard at trying not to seem like dinosaurs. We try to address the present needs of the people of Street in many different ways. In May 2019 there will be local elections, and Street Parish Council is increasing the number of councillors from 12 to 16. This will help with the work of offering even more opportunities to put on events to support the community, as well as all of the other usual Councillor duties. If you think you are interested in becoming a councillor (not a dinosaur) then please contact Linda Ruff, Street Council Clerk, on 01458 440588 or email her at street.parish@streetpc.gov.uk. We look forward to hearing from you. Nina Swift (Councillor for South ward)

CRISPIN EQUESTRIAN TEAM NEWS The Crispin Equestrian team travelled to The National Schools Equestrian Association Championship Plate competition on November 17-18. The team of Saffron Coombes, Emily Billing, Milly Chapman and Lucy Durston had qualified for the 80 and 90cm show jumping and the 80 jumping with style. All the girls rode brilliantly over a technical jump off course to see them finish on zero faults. And we’re very proud to say that they won their class!

FESTIVAL PRODUCTION’S SEARCH FOR STARS

W

ells Theatre Festival organisers are excited to announce that William Shakespeare’s much-loved romantic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, will be the next community production for this year’s Wells Theatre Festival, which will take place between 11-14 July. Following the success of Wells Theatre Festival’s community performance of Romeo and Juliet last Summer, the search is on for the stars of 2019. Ros Johnson, Artistic Director said, “We are looking for people from Wells and the surrounding area to play all the parts in this next production. Last year’s production proved to us that no experience is necessary and we are after that raw talent again. Just a passion for theatre and a desire to take part is all you need. There are parts for leading men and women of all ages as well as the ensemble cast of soldiers, servants and locals. We can’t wait to get started.”

Auditions will be held in Wells on Sunday, January 20. If you would like to audition for a part or to be a member of the ensemble cast please contact ros@wellstheatrefestival.org.

ow to summarise Shepton Mallet Prison… from the ex-officer guides sharing stories of years gone by to action-packed events, this piece of ‘Dark Tourism’ nestled in the sleepy town of Shepton Mallet is an attraction not to be missed. Shepton Prison definitely meets the criteria for this, from buildings dating back to the 17th Century to events of historical interest and stories of tragedy, it ticks the boxes for ‘dark’. As for ‘tourism’ it has so much to offer, from guided and self-guided heritage tours to an array of activities including Ghost Tours, for those who like exploring in the dark listening to

How To Manage Your Pet’s Weight It’s the time of year again when we are all thinking about extra calories we’ve consumed, and we may also be thinking about our pet’s weight, too. Obesity is defined as excessive amounts of adipose tissue in the body, and is the most common nutritional disorder in companion animals. Studies show that 59% of dogs and 39% of cats in the UK are overweight. Obesity leads to many health problems, including arthritis, diabetes, skin disease, heart disease, and will also reduce their life span. At Orchard we offer professional advice to keep your pets fit and healthy, including how to maintain the correct weight. Body condition scoring is easy to do at home, it assesses your pet’s body fat and assigns a score. 1-3 is underweight, 4 and 5 are the ideal weight, 6 or 7 is overweight and 8 or 9 means the pet is obese. This is a fun way for you to make sure your pet is the correct shape.

ome games cry out for a hi-res remake, and one that cries louder than the rest is Resident Evil 2. Arguably the best of the series to date (as in, it definitely is), Resi 2 allows you to takes control of two characters: rookie police officer Leon Kennedy and student Claire Redfield in two separate intertwining campaigns. And it’s brilliant. The remake features the same stunning storyline and puzzles but now includes stunning graphics and a new over-the-shoulder camera angle. This is definitely one to get when you finally complete Red Dead 2.
