s it me, or is it really cold out there? With Christmas but a distant memory now, and spring still a little way away, it’s warming to know that there’s still plenty going on in the area – check out our four-page Event Guide and you’ll see what I mean. On top of all that we’ve also got a full rundown of who’s playing (and when) at the Glastonbury Calling festival on February 24, and also who you can look forward to seeing at this year’s Godney Gathering festival in July – spoiler alert: it’s another cracking line-up! Aside from all the other usual treats, February will also be the month that The Basis Online is launched to a waiting world. We’re really proud of the site and hope that you find it useful. Our hope is that, very soon, finding events across the whole of Somerset will become a lot easier. But we’ll give you a full breakdown of the site in the next issue. COMPETITION Every year, through the spring, Street Parish Council display banners celebrating the life of our village along the High Street. For the last few years, you might have seen the sillhouettes depicting scenes ranging from Greenbank swimmers, to Crispin students on their way home from school. This year however, it’s time for a change!
Street Parish Council, in association with the CREATE:SPACE II pop-up gallery, are inviting everyone in the local community to come up with some new images, celebrating Street, to form the basis of a new set of banners! The selected entries will be printed onto new banners ready to be displayed all along Street High Street this coming Spring. ENTRIES SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ON OR BEFORE 19.02.2018 IN PERSON AT CREATE:SPACE II OR BY EMAILING GOOD.NEWS@STREETHARVEST.ORG.UK Entries should include full name, age, address and contact telephone number of the artist. Finished banners will consist of a 76x100cm digital print of part or all of one of the selected winning images, positioned above a coloured panel reading “Street, Somerset” and showing the Ichthyosaur Logo. Entries containing recognisable images of people should include evidence of their permission to appear in the competition. Winners will be notified using their contact telephone number, on or before 28.02.2018. Street Parish Council reserve the right to use part or all of any image entered in the competition in future projects or promotions. CREATE:SPACE RETURNS Pop-up gallery housed in old Tesco shop
BANNER COMPETITION Every spring, Street Parish Council display banners celebrating the life of the village along the High Street. This year the Council, in association with CREATE:SPACE II, are inviting everyone in the local community to come up with some new images, celebrating Street, to form the basis of a new set of banners. Selected entries will be printed onto banners ready to be displayed all along Street High Street this spring. Entries should be submitted on or before February 19 in person at CREATE:SPACE II or by emailing good.news@ streetharvest.org.uk.

There are many exciting things to look forward to. First up is Glastonbury Calling on February 24. A fantastic day full of a great variety of acts – get your tickets from the Glasto Merch shop. Then we have the exciting news that indie legends Feeder will be headlining this year’s Godney Gathering – we can’t wait for that one!
Oska Zaky has recently added three members to his lineup and is now The Oska Zaky Band. Having already seen them play a handful of times I am excited to see how they progress. He was already a brilliant act but the band complete the sound. Alex and Craig Priddice have been in the studio recently and are teasing a debut album. I recently heard some of the songs they will be recording and I believe it’s going to be a brilliant record. Georgie Robbins

fter a successful run on the High Street around 18 months ago, CREATE:SPACE is back with a pop-up gallery and collaborative space using the empty warehouse location formerly occupied by Tesco in Street. The gallery has been open for a couple of weeks now, and has already attracted a wide variety of talented artists keen to exhibit their work – showing everything from artwork, to interactive sculpture to a robot made from car hubcaps! Open to collaborators from every part of the community, and at any stage in their personal, creative, and spiritual journeys, we hope to pick up where the original CREATE:SPACE left off, as a place for conversation and discovery, as well as an environment to play, grow, and rest. Artists are welcome to display their art for free, and they also keep 100% of any sales they make. CREATE:SPACE II is open daily until February 22.

2018’s Croscombe pantomime is called Captain Hook’s Revenge, and takes place at the Croscombe Village Hall on February 1517 (Thursday to Saturday). There are two daily performances at 2pm and 7.30pm and tickets are either available on the door or by email on kateegan48@gmail.com.
It all began at Glastonbury Festival’s Worthy FM. That’s where teenagers Jack Bilsborough and Flo Parker Bombosch met and later started their own GFM show, naturally called Jack and Flo, which they have run for 14 months so far. “We have really different music tastes so offer all sorts of sounds, particularly for young people,” says Jack who lives in Glastonbury. “The show is all about getting a balance between me and Flo. We like each other but disagree a lot.” They include music quizzes, weird news items, light-hearted looks at current issues and Jack plays 0.3 of a second from a track from which Flo has to guess the name of the singer. “We also invite Strode College students in to talk about their music which we play,”says Flo who lives in Street. Flo is taking a Music BTech degree at Strode and wants to earn enough money from working in music to not need an other job, adding: “I am not interested in becoming famous.” Jack is taking A-levels in geography, law, economics and music production at Strode. He loves his radio work at GFM but is undecided about careers. The Jack and Flo show is broadcast by GFM on 107.1 FM and online at glastonbury.co.uk twice a month on Saturdays from 9-10am.

FOUR IN A ROW! The Crispin School rugby team are once again victorious after winning the Somerset County Final against Clevedon School on January 19. The Year 11 team have the unprecedented honour of also being champions in years 8, 9 and 10, making it a stunning four wins in a row!
CRISPIN COMMUNITY FOCUS LAUNCH DAY CENTRE Starting on February 13, the Crispin Community Focus will be running a weekly day centre – with funding from The Field House Trust. The last day centre in Street closed last year, and so there was nowhere for older people to go for the whole day. The day will be run by volunteers and start at 10am. There will be tea and coffee on arrival followed by an activity. A two-course lunch will be served at 12.30, followed by another activity before the day ends at 3pm. Free transport is available from Mendip Community Transport (terms and conditions apply) and the day will cost £10. If people are interested in coming, they must book through Crispin Community Focus in advance by either coming in or phoning 01458 447248.

Heads Up provides activity-based learning and development workshops for individuals with mental health needs, including adults with dementia, learning disabilities and physical disabilities. We provide support to enable individuals to establish links to their local community and, in particular, access information such as Education, Volunteering and Employment Opportunities.

Many organisations, villages, towns and cities are taking steps towards becoming dementia friendly, and Street Parish Council hopes Street can become such a place. People with dementia and their carers talk about the everyday challenges they face in living well with dementia. This can include difficulty using technology, using transport, going on holiday, maintaining social contact and hobbies. Although help from health and care services is important, making it possible for people affected by dementia to live well will require help from people and organisations across society. Alzheimer’s Society’s five year strategy ‘Delivering on Dementia’ will be working to create such dementia-friendly communities. One of the key ways in which they are doing this is through supporting the development of local Dementia Action Alliances across England. Local Dementia Action Alliances bring together key stakeholders within a community where people affected by dementia can act as a catalyst to identify the key changes required to make their community dementia friendly and make it happen. Eventually organisations and communities in Street that are working towards becoming dementia friendly will be able to display a symbol to show this. Nina Swift (Councillor for South ward)

SNOWDROP FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES EVENTS The 2018 Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival will take place on February 16-18, and promises a packed program of events for all the family. Michael Eavis will be opening the Festival at 10am on Friday the 16th, and over the following three days there’s a brilliant mixture of music, poetry, walks, a fancy dress parade and art planned for visitors. The Snowdrop Festival is an initiative of the Shepton Mallet Horticultural Society, which has planted over 200,000 snowdrop bulbs around the town to bloom during the Festival. POSTGRADUATE EXHIBITION AT THE ATKINSON GALLERY Each February the Atkinson Gallery welcomes students from MA and other Postgraduate programmes across the UK to exhibit in the Atkinson Gallery. Students are nominated by their lecturers to put forward up to four pieces of artwork created during their Postgraduate course. Last year we welcomed entries from 25 universities, this year we hope to increase that number. With the arts under increasing pressure across all sectors of education, it is even more important for us to support those students who are emerging from art schools and provide opportunities to exhibit. The MA show continues to represent the Atkinson Gallery’s ethos of supporting aspiring artists and bringing high calibre art to the South West. The MA and Other Postgraduates exhibition is a mustsee contemporary collection of painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, and multimedia. Entry to all our exhibitions is free. e’re firm believers that treating ourselves from time to time is very good for the soul and, luckily, we have three gin-themed events from the Rolling Cocktail Company coming up that fit the bill perfectly. The first event is on Saturday, March 3 and is a delicious gin-themed two-course meal of fine dining at the Shepton Brasserie with a refreshing gin, prosecco and elderflower cocktail. Tickets for that are just £19.50 for the whole evening. The next two are on the same day, Saturday March 17, and are a collaboration with Glastonbury Abbey at their new Abbey House venue. The events kick off at 3pm with ‘Abbey House Warming’, which is the perfect way to celebrate the launch of Abbey House. Tickets cost £25 and include a gin cocktail, a stunning range of sandwiches, cakes and a cream tea, as well as entry to the Abbey House.
SUNDAY CLUB GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

f you haven’t experienced the delights of the Sunday Club at Daniels Café in Wells then we recommend you do so at the earliest possible opportunity. It’s been running for six months now, and is just getting bigger and better, as more and more people are coming down to listen to the brilliant music, as well as enjoying a delicious breakfast. Past artists have included Safehaus, Kate Gough and Got Chemistry. February’s line-up includes Chelsea Paget, and Cathy Judge and Will Francis. Daniels’ Sunday Club is on the first Sunday of each month and starts at 11am. Booking is recommended!
Next up is ‘Gindulgence’, a gin festival running from 6-10pm. Here you will be able to enjoy a selection of premium gins, cocktails, nibbles and themed gifts. MENDIP MEN’S WALK
March sees the second annual Mendip Men’s walk from Wells to Glastonbury. We find out more about it, and the charity they’re raising money for.

en and boys over the age of 12 in the Mendip area are invited to join the Mendip Men’s Walk on March 17 in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice. The event is now in its second year and is the brainchild of Candlelight Care CEO Peter Lugg, who noticed that while there are many fundraising events for women, there is nothing specifically for men to take part in in the Mendip area. The inaugural event in 2017 involved around 70 men and raised over £4,000 for St Margaret’s Hospice. Organisers are hoping that this year’s event will involve more than 100 men and are aiming to raise between £7-8,000. It will begin at Wells Cathedral and end at Tor Rugby Club, where participants can enjoy a pasty and pint while watching England play Ireland in the Six Nations match on the big screen in the Clubhouse. The walk begins at 10.30am, and takes between 2.5 and 3 hours to complete. It costs £25 to enter, with all profits going to St Margaret’s Hospice in Yeovil. Sponsorship forms are also be available, enabling participants to raise further funds for the Hospice. Those that raise over £50 will receive a free event T-shirt. “We are delighted to bring the Mendip Men’s Walk back for a second year,” says Candlelight Care’s Pete Lugg, “and we look forward to raising a great deal of money for this worthy cause.” For more information, and to book your place on the Mendip Men’s Walk, head to www.somersethospice.org.uk/Event/Mendip-Mens-Walk-2018.

Regular home care is important to prevent tartar build up, gum disease, and tooth loss. Periodontal disease is one of the most common health conditions in pets, and untreated leads to painful infection in your pet’s mouth. Animals rarely show overt pain; usually only after dental treatments will owners comment how much happier their pet seems. Come in to see one of our trained veterinary nurses for a FREE dental check to examine your pet’s mouth and discuss home care to prevent periodontal disease. The best thing for your pet’s teeth, just like ours, is regular brushing. This needs to be at least 2-3 times per week to be effective, and like everything else, it can be easier to get pets to accept this when they are young. However, older dogs and cats can still be trained to enjoy having their teeth brushed. You will need a pet-specific toothpaste, as human toothpaste isn’t good for animals. If brushing isn’t possible for you and your pet, there’s a wide variety of other products that can help keep pets’ teeth healthy, from special foods which clean as they chew, to dental treats, to additives to their drinking water. If an animal is suffering from periodontal disease, that needs to be treated by a vet under anaesthesia. While the pet is asleep, their mouth is examined
