WELCOME Welcome to all our first-timers and welcome back to all our regulars! It’s that time of year again, the second Sunday in October, Wells Food Festival day, Sunday, October 13th. For the seventh year running, our team of volunteers have once again put together Somerset’s largest (we’re told) and most diverse celebration of local artisan food and drink. This year almost 200 stalls await you, laden with delicious things to try and to buy. Most of our regular stallholders will be there again, as well as some really interesting newcomers for you to explore, all selected by us to offer you the widest possible variety of tastes and ideas. We’re so lucky in Somerset to be surrounded by such quality, such talent, such inventiveness. And it’s all here for you. Last year’s popular Bath and West farmyard will be here again, so that you and the family can meet and talk with local farmers and their livestock. There’s a fresh look to the Discovery Zone - this year it’s all about milk and dairy products, and ‘Love food, hate waste’. Lots to learn, lots to do. As always, entry is free. There’s so much to see, so why not make a day of it? We’ve arranged plenty of places for you to take the weight off your feet. Welcome to the City of Wells, everyone. Have a terrific day!

WELLS FOOD FESTIVAL 2019

Cornish Mutual was created by farmers for farmers. We’ve been insuring farms and rural businesses in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset for more than 115 years. As your local mutual insurer, we’ll provide you with a personal, awardwinning service and a fair, straightforward approach to insurance.

Farm • Commercial • Property • Fleet • Personal • Motor

Isn’t it time you discovered a new kind of insurance?

INTRODUCTION

Our History None of us could have imagined, back in 2012, that what started out as a Great Somerset Sunday Lunch with a handful of stalls, would become so large, so diverse, and so popular that the Daily Telegraph chose us recently as one of Europe’s best food festivals. Seven years on, Wells Food Festival is firmly established in the Somerset calendar – even in last year’s downpour, more than 10,000 visitors arrived to browse the food and drink stalls, all set in the extraordinary surroundings of England’s smallest city. In the early days, it was confined to the medieval Market Place, but now the Festival continues along the Palace moat walk, into the Recreation Ground and, since last year, into the beautiful grounds of the Bishop’s Palace itself. A tiny team of less than 10 volunteers set about arranging this year’s event almost as soon as last year’s was over –

booking and locating stallholders, marquees, electrics, safety equipment, recruiting stewards, raising the £15,000 sponsorship we need just to break even, arranging insurance, rubbish disposal… the list goes on. It’s a mountain of work full of tiny details, but as they say, it’s worth it – if you have a great day then we do too. Still crazy after all these years.

Our Purpose From the very start, we have stuck firmly to our prime aim – to showcase and celebrate the high-quality work of our county’s artisan food and drink producers and manufacturers. By attracting such a large audience, we are proud to play our part in boosting our stallholders’ business, the local economy, the city’s prestige and the tourism on which the whole area depends so very much. And, we hope to give each of our visitors a fulfilling day, packed with flavour, surprises, fun and learning.

Wells Food Festival needs more volunteers for its Committee and the Event. Contact Jon at info@wellsfoodfestival.co.uk for more information. wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

WELLS FOOD FESTIVAL 2019

WHAT’S ON

There’s much more to the Food Festival than just the stalls. Here’s a taster of some of the other things to sample on the day.

The Royal Bath and West of England Society Farmyard Area The Royal Bath & West Society is delighted to be attending Wells Food Festival as part of Charlie Bigham’s Discovery Zone. As last year, the Bath & West Farmyard will help to promote local produce, and demonstrate a range of agricultural activities to help consumers learn about farming and where their food comes from. We hope the presence of our farming friends and farm animals will help the audience to participate in a variety of ‘hands, eyes, ears and noses-on’ learning. Be sure to come along to the Bath & West Farmyard and say hello to the animals!

The Collective Children’s Trail The Collective is proudly supporting the Children’s Trail at this year’s Festival. For a fun way to see the festival, join the interactive trail and learn some great local foodie facts as you go! Collect your trail map (complete with clues) from the Wells Food Festival information stand and you’re ready to start your journey of food discovery. There are two trails available – a picture trail for wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

little ones and a quiz trail for the bigger kids. Both trails will take you all around the festival, with clues hidden in each of the main areas. There will be a small prize available for all correctly completed trail sheets at the end of the trail in the Discovery Zone. Happy discovering!

Children’s Zone Located in the Bishop’s Barn, Noah’s Ark Pre-School provide some interactive fun for our younger visitors.

Town Hall The Town Hall hosts local artisan crafts and produce, and the results of the Photographic Competition. Come and sample local wines from Perch Hill Vineyard and unusual teas from the Leafy Tea Company. Hand-crafted wooden products, candles, jewellery, ceramics and beeswax food covers also make an appearance.

Towards Zero Waste Come and sup with us at the Towards Zero Waste Café, where our (reusable) cups will be overflowing with ideas and suggestions on how we can all reduce food waste in our kitchens and make life just a bit more healthy and tasty. WELLS FOOD FESTIVAL 2019

WHAT’S ON

Charlie Bigham’s Discovery Zone Discover Dairy Facts – With 16 farm vets working across the Mendips, Shepton Vets know a lot about cows and milk production. They continue to carry out the James Herriot role and attend calving cows and other emergencies, but more often their work is about helping farmers keep their cows healthy, happy and productive. Cows can be fed human-feed waste and by-products, such as from brewing or biscuit making. Shepton Vets make sure the cows are healthy on these diets and they help dairy farms with disease control and vaccination plans to reduce antibiotic use. Coombes Micro Dairy provides some farm fresh milk for sampling and will be able to answer any questions you may have. Come and Learn how Yoghurt is Made – The Collective are passionate about creating great dairy. From ridiculously tasty gourmet yoghurts, to The Collective Kids Suckies yoghurt ‘n’ fruit pouches, there’s something for all the family. What’s more, all of The Collective’s yoghurts are packed full of live cultures and contain only natural ingredients. wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

Love Food, Hate Waste – Did you know the average UK family could save up to £800 a year by throwing away less food and drink? Food’s not rubbish! Join Somerset Waste Partnership at Wells Food Festival to share tips on how to make the most of your food. Whether you’re trying to cut waste while coping with the kids, struggling to cook or buy the right amount just for you, are unsure about date labels and if things are safe to eat, or simply want some inspiration for tasty dishes so nothing goes to waste, you’ll find practical suggestions and information to take away in the Discovery Zone. And remember a Pumpkin is not just for Halloween! See how to produce compost and the benefits of home composting, retaining all the organic matter that we can utilise instead of disposal by the Council. Educational and informative boards show the compostable and non-compostable items that you can use – photos of the micro-organisms, worms and other insects that are busy in our compost bins. To find out more, don’t forget to visit the Discovery Zone. WELLS FOOD FESTIVAL 2019

Complete funerals from only £1,499

We don’t just do funerals, we celebrate life Funeral Services We at Wells Funeral Services offer affordable funerals to the population of Mendip and beyond. Since setting up the business in September 2016, we pride ourselves on delivering funerals that people want; establishing our client’s needs, wants and budget is of paramount importance to us as a business. We like to get to know our families, and so for us that means a trip to Wells market, and to be visible to one and all on a Wednesday from January to November you will find one or

often both of us on our market stall. Reaching out to help with advice, and we like to talk about anything and everything, it’s more getting to know you. Why sit in an office waiting for the phone to ring, when after all people like to see who they are dealing with and get some good old-fashioned banter! When selecting a funeral director, try to use an independent like me and look at their reviews – either on their own website or on Google reviews. You’re only as good as the last funeral delivered.

Funeral planning and plans

Funeral plans can be paid for in full, or spread over 1 to 10 years, with deposits starting from just £80.
