EFFECT! Bliss

My life’s dearest companion, bliss In this state, engulfed in love. No one can separate us, or Interrupt this regal sojourn together. We soar high when we please Or explore the ocean’s cool depths. We become the sun rising above the mountain top, Or rise in silence in the starlight. In bliss we show no shyness, no attention to form. We are a caravan, an endless bounty of love. The wise of this world perceive us as mad, They do not lie; yet, we are true. We are an ocean that leaps with energy, Not a bubble, for we are one. Formless, boundless, no coast nor edges We appear like water mid-ocean, infinite.

ight from his childhood, Narendra Modi showed signs of being an ascetical idealist. He sought the company of hermits and of wilderness. Even as a child, he used to go to sleep in an abandoned temple in the Gir Forest, which was next to his hometown of Vadnagar. It was not surprising then that he left home when he was 18 and wandered in the Himalayas, spent time with holy men. Inspired as he was by Swami Vivekananda, Modi went to Belur Math near Kolkata, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission founded by Vivekananda,

and wanted to join the monastic order. But his request was denied because those at the math felt that he was too young to join the monastery. When he returned to Gujarat, he shifted to Ahmedabad from Vadnagar, and worked at a tea-stall, and he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a volunteer. It is interesting to note that he had been with the RSS at Vadnagar when he was an eight-year-old. In a way, he re-established his childhood connection with the RSS as a young adult. He could not pursue a college education because of financial difficulties. He obtained his B.A. as a private student from the Delhi

University in 1978 when he was 28 and he got his M.A. in 1983 at the age of 33. When the Emergency was imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, Modi, as an RSS activist, went underground and he was busy distributing anti-Emergency literature. This was his first brush with political activism. He did not look back after this. It was inevitable that with his ascetic turn of mind, his idealism and his determination to serve country and society, Modi would follow a path of his own which will take him to the office of the Prime Minister of India. Friends Are Forever Serious and high-minded, confident and disciplined, Modi was not, however, a cold person. His close friends in school and college recall that he followed his ideals, he is a warm friend and he has remained one despite his political success. Even after he became chief minister of Gujarat, the friends say that he never threw his weight around and he had remained the friend he was, without any airs. Jasudbhai Pathan, one of his close childhood friends, is quoted in “Narendra Damodardas Modi: The Making of a Legend” by Dr Bindeshwar Pathak saying of Modi: “Though Narendra Modi is India’s Prime Minister today, for me, he is still the same Narendra Damodardas Modi. I was with him in the 10th and 11th standards and also spent some time with him at the M.N. College in Visnagar. We stayed in the same hostel room.” In Politics Modi’s public career was a steady one, where he moved from one responsible position to another. During the Emergency, he was made the General Secretary of Gujarat Lok Sangharsh Samiti (GLSS) to coordinate the underground activities. As an RSS pracharak in-charge of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Modi carried a sustained campaign highlighting the excesses of the Emergency, including a bicycle rally. In 1978, Modi was made Sambhaag Pracharak and made in-charge of South and Central Gujarat. It was in 1985 that the RSS assigned Modi to the BJP. He became the organising secretary of the BJP in Gujarat in 1988. Party president LK Advani picked up Modi to be the core member of the Somnath to Ayodhya Rath Yatra in 1990 and the Ekta Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir under party president Murli Manohar Joshi in 1992. As the party secretary of the Gujarat unit, he worked for the BJP’s victories in the assembly elections of 1995 and 1998. He became the General Secretary (Organisation) of BJP in 1998 and he was made in-charge of the party in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Chandigarh. In all these assignments, he displayed leadership qualities. He revamped party structures in these states and facilitated the victory of the party in state assembly elections. It was in October 2001 that the party chose him to be the chief minister of Gujarat. In the next 10 years, Modi won three assembly elections in 2002, 2007 and 2012, and he made a huge impact in Gujarat through his efficient economic management. Experts have described the economic upturn of the state as the successful Gujarat model. He emerged as one of the most successful BJP chief ministers and also as its face of success in the country. When BJP won the 2014 Lok Sabha election and Modi took over as prime minister, it marked the culmination of an active, steady and challenging political career. Modi literally rose from the ranks of the RSS and the BJP, at every point proving his capabilities as he rose to the next position in the hierarchy. He literally pulled himself up from the bootstraps to rise to the highest political office in the country. But his zeal which had marked him out as the RSS pracharak in the 1970s through the early 1980s, and his capabilities as functionary of the BJP between the mid1980s to 2001 when he was elevated to the chief minister’s

post in Gujarat, did not flag off. He maintained the same levels of energy in each assignment he was given. He showed a sense of dedication and tried to do something differently with the job which was given to him. There was an innate hunger for achievement, to do things better. And he showed that during 13 years as Gujarat chief minister. It is usually the case that people peak off when they reach a certain stage, but not Modi. Country’s All It is natural to ask the question as to how he keeps himself charged. It would seem that the ideals that he had imbibed in his youth, before joining the RSS, of leading a life of service for the country, have helped in keeping him steady on the path. He imposed certain self-discipline on himself, through yoga and other things, and more importantly, he kept himself alone, a man without personal baggage, a man who has nothing else on mind except what he needs to do. It is a soldier’s state of mind, and he retained it when he was at the bottom of the hierarchy in the RSS and the BJP, but also after he reached the position of a commander, where he had to give directions, when he became the chief minister of Gujarat in 2001 and prime minister of India in 2014. Solitary Reaper He also leads a private life of solitude in these high offices. He has not indulged his family members to come and stay with him. The only other man who maintained this kind of private solitude was former president APJ Abdul Kalam. Only once did he entertain his family of brothers and their children when he was president of India, and he paid for their stay from his salary. In Modi’s case, he does not seem

oga is an age-old practice that boosts the physical, mental and spiritual well being. Ever since the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2015, it has created quite a lot of buzz all across the globe. Believed to be a practice 5000-years old, Yoga is said to have originated in India and helps to heal your mind, body, and soul. It won’t be wrong to say that yoga reforms your thoughts to peruse a great lifestyle. The credit to honour this holy practice Yoga with a day goes to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi who suggested June 21 to be celebrated as the International Day of Yoga. PM Narendra Modi said, “The date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.” After which, recognising its universal appeal, on December 11th, 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. Now, it is celebrated annually on 21 June with people all around the world coming together and sharing their favourite Yoga exercises.

to allow himself even this indulgence. It looks like that the only people with whom he relaxes are his childhood friends in Vadnagar. When he goes there, he meets with them without the barriers of his political office. It is this puritanism that seems to be his guiding light. This does not however mean that he does not laugh or mingle with people warmly, or he does not express feelings. In his daily interactions, especially with those people who come to meet him, he is solicitous and courteous, and he connects with people of all ages when an idea connects him with the person. Recently, during a Mann Ki Baat, he responded with happiness and feeling with a young girl who had sent him a message in Sanskrit. Creative writers and psychologists have argued that leaders at the top are lonely, that they have no one to share their anxieties. This observation does not hold good any more. Many of the American presidents have their family

and close friends in whose company they are themselves and share their ideas and feelings. In the case of Modi, however, it is not the case that he is alone because he has reached the top and he has no close group of family and friends. Modi has chosen this path of being alone right from the beginning of his public life. It also appears that he has an inner life of his own, where he meditates, follows the yoga regime, and it is this discipline that helps him to maintain that constant cheer he carries with him during the day. He is combative and he attacks his political opponents relentlessly, but he does not show any trace of bitterness in his public behaviour. There is a sense of detachment. He seems to follow the idea propounded in the Bhagavad Geeta that you should do your duty but not expect rewards. And he does his work in a spirit of cheerfulness. Many political writers are perplexed by Modi’s solitude in the midst of his hectic political life. They have been trying to unravel the mystery, trying to explain his politics through his personal life. The only elements of his personal life he seems to carry are those of his childhood, when he grew up in a family which was struggling at the bottom rung of the

As a matter of fact, he seems to have succeeded in sublimating the harsh poverty of his early life into an austere idealism. Among the top politicians in the world, Modi remains a lone example of a man who does not have any personal baggage. He lives light, he travels light. What keeps

him going is his constant engagement with the demands of public life. He lives a rich life in his own way despite the fact of the near bareness of his personal life. The sense of personal detachment combined with an intense engagement with politics and political office presents a complicated profile of Modi. Political psychoanalysts might be eager to write psycho-biography of Modi. But for Modi himself, it does not seem to present any mystery. It is a life he had lived through his 68 years, doing his work and with no second thoughts. It is this sense of certitude which arises from simplicity that lies behind the intensely private personal life and the hectic public life.

Women’s Empowerment

Modi Mantra: “Women To The Fore” From women’s development to women-led development, Modi’s approach is not of merely empowering women but that of enabling them to lead us into a new era of development

“Women have higher success rates, despite the fewer opportunities they get in comparison to what men in our society do so often”

rom the ancient Rishikas who revealed the Vedas to the brave women who fought against the colonizers, India’s history and culture has always envisioned women as personifying the greatest of human values. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a holistic approach towards the welfare of women, which includes novel programmes like ‘Beti Bacho-Beti Padho’, ‘Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana’ and many more. By way of building separate toilets for girls through Swachh Bharat Mission, he intends to reduce the drop out ratio of girls in schools. Prime Minister Modi has also acknowledged changes in the Maternity Act, Factory Act, induction of women in the armed forces and police forces as signs of changing times. Modi seeks to trigger a sociocultural change in the way our society sets different norms for men and women. In his first Independence Day address, he remarked that parents always question their daughters when they are going out, and asked whether they have the courage to ask their sons where they are going or why. For a popular leader active in electoral

politics to gently chide his own society for unfairness and call for a change, is an exercise fraught with risk. But, Modi has not chide away from it. “We are in the 21st century. Yet, our mothers and sisters, especially those belonging to poor families, do not have facilities for sage sanitation. Isn’t ensuring dignity of women a collective responsibility? Women have to face great embarrassment due to the lack of access to safe sanitation. The difficulties and the health risks that they face are appalling. Shouldn’t we must make arrangements for toilets to safeguard the health and dignity of our mothers and sisters?” With this aim Prime Minister Modi has launched Swacchh Bharat Mission on 2nd October, 2014. The important task is ensuring the construction of toilets in all schools of India and a separate toilet for girls. Thus, girls will not be forced to drop out of schools. India is now moving forward from women development to women-led development, and “women first” is the mantra of Modi government and the party. Empowering a woman is equivalent to securing the future of the entire home. When we empower women in a family, we empower the entire house-hold. When we help with a woman’s education, we ensure that the family is educated. When we facilitate her good health, we help keep the family healthy. When we secure her future, we secure future of the entire home. “Women first, Prosperity for all”…Modi drew allegory of women power with the incarnation of Shakti- the Goddess of power in GES 2017. He said that women empowerment is vital to India’s development. This statement from a charismatic leader like Modi meant a lot for women’s participation in economic and political sphere of India. If it is to be analysed what has been done for women’s economic empowerment by Modi government in

Sep 17 - 23, 2018 past, it should be viewed from different-different perspectives. Decision Making

Modi said the presence of women at the top level of decision making certainly speaks a lot about women’s empowerment. Whether they are a homemaker, job seeker or job creator, his government stands by women. He said women should play an equal role in social, economic and other fields of life. “For us, whether it is the organisation or the government, or framing of programmes, it is women first,” he added. The prime minister also stressed on the need for instilling the “fear of law”. He said provisions of the IPC, CRPC and POCSO were made more stringent by his government to instill that fear. The prime minister said whether it is the Olympics or Commonwealth games, Indian women made the country proud. They are also excelling in the defence forces and becoming entrepreneurs. Combative Empowerment

In a first, his government has decided that women will be in a combat role in the Army, he said, adding a proposal for giving them 33 per cent reservation in the police force in the Union Territories is also under consideration. Modi said his government and the BJP are “completely and comprehensively” committed to “naari shakti” (women power), a significant part of the New India vision. MUDRA scheme provides easy finance of upto one million rupees to entrepreneurs. “Since its launch in 2015, over 90 million loans worth 4.28 trillion rupees have been sanctioned. Of these, more than 70 million loans have been sanctioned to women entrepreneurs,” Modi said. One of the clearer paths for economic empowerment of women is through education and protection of girl child. With this aim in mind, the government launched“Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” Members of Sulabh tied rakhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. T

he dream of building a New India can be realised by empowering women and providing them equal opportunities in society and economic matters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said once. Modi said India was moving toward women-led development. He said the idea of New India envisages women who are strong, empowered equal partners in development of the country. “The country is moving towards women-led development. It is our duty to ensure that women get equal opportunities in social and financial issues. Swami Vivekanand had said that the idea of perfect womanhood is perfect independence,” Modi said in his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat. Modi said the inner-strength and ability to overcome difficulties have made women self-reliant. “Not only has she herself advanced but has carried forward the country and society to newer heights,” Modi added. “We are part of a tradition where men were identified because of women. YashodaNandan, Kaushalya-Nandan, Gandhari-Putra, these were identities of a son,” he said. In the course of the radio address, Modi also said that there was a need for India to become a risk conscious society and imbibe the values of safety. He said people will have to understand the importance of safety and that they should make it a part of their everyday life. Political analysts feel that the idea of development for all given by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party would be incomplete without the upliftment of women. If it is development for all then the fruits of development should reach to women also. The government has taken steps to empower women by providing subsidized LPG cylinders and easy loans to women to start their own business. Electorally also women have become more conscious and it is the duty of all political parties to reach out to the women and try to address their concerns.

“Multitasking is a speciality in the managerial world. In fact, our women have been multitasking since ages and their efforts have contributed a lot in bringing our country to this level”

He couldn’t leave because his family was unable to afford a portable ventilator that costs around Rs 1 lakh. “We are farmers and earn Rs 6,000-7,000 a month, we can’t afford a machine worth a lakh,” says Munni Devi, Kumar’s mother. On reading the story, Jitendra Singh, the MoS PMO, spoke to the boy’s treating doctor to get an estimate of how much money would be needed to rehabilitate Kumar and took up the matter with the Prime Minister. The money was promptly sanctioned from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and a letter for the same was issued. His family was poor and he deserved to be helped. The PM maintains that whatever possible should be done in such cases. PM responds The father of 12-year-old Parth - who has a rare and deadly brain disorder - had almost given up hope to treat his son. He had spent all his savings, sold off his property and his wife’s jewellery. With no option left, Parth’s father thought, “Why not write to the PM?” And to his complete surprise, he got a reply. A positive one. Parth is from Gujarat’s Amreli district and suffers from the rare Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE), a deadly brain disorder related to measles (rubeola) infection. “I sold all my property, including my wife’s jewellery, to help my only son. As a final resort, I wrote a letter to PM Modi and to the health ministry seeking help in the treatment for Parth,” he said. A few days later, the family received a letter from the Prime Minister’s office assuring free and full treatment for the boy in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). PM assured us full support and financial assistance for my son’s treatment. So now, not only do they have financial aid, the PM has also given them moral support.

Khadi For Nation to Khadi For Fashion • I would ask you to come in Khadi, for Khadi links you with the fallen and the down-trodden. • Khaddar delivers the poor from the bonds of the rich and creates a moral and spiritual bond between the classes and the masses.

Empowerment Of The Poor

• Of all the myriad of Gods, Daridranarayana is the most sacred, inasmuch as it represents the untold millions of poor people. • I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything from it? Will it restore him to a control over his own life and destiny.

The Village- Where India Really Lives

• India is to be found not in its few cities but in its 7,00,000 villages. We town-dwellers have believed that India is to be found in its towns and villages were created to minister to our needs. We have hardly ever paused to inquire if those poor folks get sufficient to eat and clothe themselves with and whether they have a roof to shelter themselves from sun and rain. • In the scheme of reconstruction for free India, its village should no longer depend, as they are now doing, on its cities, but cities should exist only for and in the interest of the villages.

Swarajya to Surajya

• The Swaraj of my dream recognizes no race or religious discrimination. Nor is it to be the monopoly of the lettered persons or yet of moneyed men. Swaraj is to be for all, including the former, but emphatically including the maimed, the blind, the starving, toiling millions. • The Swaraj of my dream is the poor man’s Swaraj. You ought to get all the ordinary amenities of life that a rich man enjoys. I have not the slightest doubt that Swaraj is not Poorna Swaraj until these amenities are guaranteed to you under it.

mong 20th century heads of government who laid emphasis on cleanliness as a way of national life was Singapore’s first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew. He saw that a clean Singapore would attract investors to the city-state, and that more importantly it would make life worth living for the citizens. He was one of the early politicians who saw the economic and social advantages of a clean Singapore. He said, “After independence, I searched for some dramatic way to distinguish ourselves from other Third World countries. I settled for a green and clean Singapore.” In 1968 he launched “Keep Singapore Clean” campaign with the idea of encouraging “healthier and more wholesome social conditions in Singapore.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi had for long admired Singapore and Lee Kuan Yew for the achievements on the social and economic fronts. Modi is keen to have the high standards of living and of efficiency in quality of working life that are to be found in Singapore to be replicated in India. Modi and Lee Kuan Yew are the two rare national leaders who have understood the important of social conditions for the well-being of a society and for its economic success in the international arena. Modi’s Clean India campaign is meant to make the country an attractive destination for investments as well as tourists the way it had worked out in Singapore.

M

ahatma Gandhi, or Bapu-as he is affectionately known to millions, was one of those rare men whose strength of character and noble ideals transformed the present and created the future of an entire nation. There is a valuable repository of thoughts that Bapu shared as he led the nation through a transformative journey leading to its liberation from foreign rule. His vision of a clean, compassionate, just and self-reliant nation is our guiding light.

Mahatma Gandhi gave utmost importance to cleanliness and went to the extent of asserting that he wanted cleanliness first and Independence later. The messages of cleanliness and selfless service that Gandhiji gave to the people are extremely important. He sought to define a nation’s purpose beyond the transitory goal of political freedom so that welfare of all people is pursued and attained. He realised that it was not only a colonial power that was oppressing

Sep 17 - 23, 2018 us, but also certain social evils that were impeding us from achieving our true potential. It is imperative that this power of mass movement be utilised towards the goal of the nation’s development. Just as Bapu converted the freedom struggle into a mass awakening, the vision of development is now being converted into a ‘Jan Andolan’, a fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has alluded to in many of his speeches. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken up the cause of sanitation in this Gandhian spirit. He seldom misses an opportunity to underline the importance of cleanliness, sanitation and toilets. Even during his interaction with various Heads of States, he brings up the issue of sanitation, for example, he spoke on the subject of toilets with former US President Barack Obama. I had the honour to meet Shri Narendra Modi ji for the first time in 2005 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Our interaction took place during an exhibition in Bhuj where I showed him my technological inventions for safe and hygienic disposal of human waste and treatment of waste water. It was a coincidence that I started fulfilling the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi during the Gandhi Centenary Year 1969, to rescue the untouchables from the demeaning practice of cleaning night soil and to bring them in the social mainstream, on par with others. I am also contributing to Swachh Bharat Mission which the Prime Minister has launched to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary. I revere Modiji for his great work and will try my level best to fulfill his dream to stop open defecation in India by 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is, with his untiring zeal, putting in great effort to make India clean and strong. A young nation like ours is brimming with potential and opportunities. What was needed was a leader rooted in our civilisational values and driven by the desire to better the lives of billions and build a strong, modern nation. Narendra Modi arrived on the national scene as an embodiment of these aspirations. Hailing from a poor but diligent family, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always remained connected with the true ethos of India, even as he worked his way up. This attachment with grassroots of our society was built in his formative years as an organisation man when he had the opportunity to visit almost every district in India. Later, as an elected leader, first as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and now as the Prime Minister of India, Modi has utilised this

foundation in Indian values and a keen knowledge of the people’s problems to permanently change politics and governance to a people-driven, peoplecentric exercise. Time and again, Prime Minister Modi has invoked Bapu’s teachings to mobilise people’s power for the nation’s growth. Through his speeches, Prime Minister Modi has spread Bapu’s message, and in his work, he has actualised Gandhiji’s principles. From Swachh Bharat Mission to Gram Uday, the initiatives taken by the Prime Minister contain Bapu’s imprints. In one of his speeches, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had put forth the five nectars derived from Champaran Satyagraha that transformed Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi into Mahatma Gandhi. Going through a number of speeches made by the Prime Minister, we came across interesting anecdotes from Bapu’s life such as people who influenced him, events that transformed him into a leader, and his simple lifestyle that could be a model of sustainable living, and more. We read through the Prime Minister’s public addresses to understand the varied underlying themes and messages pertaining to Bapu and his vision. In one of our books, we tried to bring forth the congruence of Mahatma Gandhi’s vision and Prime Minister Modi’s mission towards a developed, compassionate and prosperous nation. As a freedom fighter, social reformer and spiritual guide, Mahatma Gandhi contributed marvellously to make India a free and great nation. His ethical teachings, his iron will and his creative faith in the force of truth, love and non-violence remains a source of inspiration for millions of people in India and beyond. It was Bapu’s ennobling humanity, indigenous wisdom and life-enhancing leadership that inspired and mobilised the masses for India’s freedom. Today, we have Prime Minister Narendra Modi creatively applying the same principles to make India a

great nation and development a mass movement. Those who know India well understand that a country as diverse as ours is hinged on its citizens’ collective and determined efforts to create a strong and prosperous nation. Both larger than life mass leaders, Mahatma Gandhi and Narendra Modi, though separated by a century, stand united in bringing people of diverse backgrounds together to work towards national goals. There is a parallel trajectory of Mahatma Gandhi’s universal ideas and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s actions to realise Bapu’s dreams. As a leader of the masses, Gandhiji often challenged the status quo, questioning the veracity of the established norms that hindered social progress. In the present context, Prime Minister Modi has come to represent the same spirit and ethos for a rejuvenated India. Deeply rooted in the Indian culture and inspired by the Gandhian vision, he has dared to make cleanliness and hygiene a cornerstone of his government’s agenda. In his memorable words, “Under the leadership of Gandhiji, Satyagraha won us our freedom. Now, realising his dream of a clean India through Swachhagraha is our collective responsibility.” From the ramparts of Red Fort, he has called upon people to join hands for open defecation free villages and cities. His

spirited campaign for a clean India has resonated with each and every citizen of the country. The school dropout rates of the girl child, stunting of growth among young children and increasing health burden on the poor are some of the crying concerns that affect a large section of our society. These issues stem from lack of sanitation as well as lack of awareness about hygiene issues. Therefore, mass mobilisation towards building toilets, especially in schools and villages, has been successful in touching lives of millions in an unprecedented manner, leading to a social revolution. The movement to make India free from open-defecation by the Prime Minister reflects his deep commitment to fulfill the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi. The unyielding resolve of Mahatma Gandhi is mirrored in the Prime Minister’s grit to envision a New India on the strength of people-centric and peopleled development. Like Bapu, Prime Minister Modi has a holistic view of life and manifold social concern for the reform of Indian society. We, at Sulabh International, are well aware that the power of collective action can yield positive impact and transform the society. This makes us firmly stand behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s noble and national endeavours to pay a fitting tribute to ‘Father of the Nation’, our beloved Bapu.

Prime Minister Modi very categorically states that the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness should not be shouldered by a few but should be practised by all. NAMO Special

Sep 17 - 23, 2018 The Swachh Bharat Mission is the most significant cleanliness campaign by the Government of India. While leading the mass movement for cleanliness, the Prime Minister exhorted people to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a clean and hygienic India. Narendra Modi himself initiated the cleanliness drive at Mandir Marg Police Station. Picking up the broom to clean the dirt, making Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a mass movement across the nation, the Prime Minister said people should neither litter, nor let others litter. He gave the mantra of ‘Na gandagi karenge, Na karne denge.’ Narendra Modi also invited nine people to join the cleanliness drive and requested each of them to draw nine more into the initiative. Madison Square Garden, New York, September 28, 2014 “Mahatma Gandhi never compromised on cleanliness. He gave us freedom. We should give him a Clean India.” “I don’t know whether it is a PM’s job, but I have decided to build toilets” “There is an urgent need to save Ganga.” Saying that development is ultimately achieved through public participation, the Prime Minister said he wants to make development a mass movement, just like Mahatma Gandhi had made the freedom movement a mass movement. He highlighted various initiatives that have been initiated by the new Government, including Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Make in India, Swachh Bharat and Clean Ganga. He said 2015 marked a century since the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India. He invited all Pravasi Bharatiyas to join in the celebration, and contribute towards developing India. 2nd October, 2014 “My dear countrymen, I am sure you have heard time and again that cleanliness is next to Godliness. Alas, things are often different when it comes to putting this into practice. Today on 2nd October we are launching Swachh Bharat Mission, a massive mass movement, that seeks to create a Clean India. Cleanliness was very close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart. A clean India is the best tribute we can pay to Bapu when we celebrate his 150th birth anniversary in 2019. Mahatma Gandhi devoted his life so that India attains ‘Swarajya’. Now the time has come to devote ourselves towards ‘Swachhata’ (cleanliness) of our motherland. Sometimes I feel that the job of getting rid of filth belongs to Safai karmchari only; Isn’t it the duty of all the 125 crore countrymen? Will we keep on imposing everything on them only? Something good happens or bad, will we keep on blaming them only? We have to change this situation. Like all 125 crore Indians the Prime Minister is also first son of Bharat Mata and Prime Minister later. Therefore, as the children of this mother, all of us are responsible that we should not keep our country like this. I know this will not be accomplished only by publicity

campaign. Old habits take time to change. It’s a difficult task, I know. But we have till 2019 when we will observe 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. If we collectively make it a people’s movement then I don’t see any reason why we will not be counted among the clean cities and nations of the world. India can also do it, Indians can do it. If Indians can reach Mars with minimum expense then can’t they clean their neighbourhood? No Prime Minister or Minister took us to Mars. It was done by the scientists; children of Mother India. Cleanliness will also be achieved together. I have come with the determination that 125 crore Indians will not let Mother India remain dirty. We will not leave any stone unturned to fulfill Bapu’s dreams. There are many youngsters, organisations in

even at the gala show at madison square garden in new york, he stressed several times the need for sanitation every nook and corner of the country. They are doing the work of cleanliness way before I became the Prime Minister. They should be brought to the limelight by Media. Brothers and sisters there is a startling evaluation of WHO – they say that the diseases created by lack of cleanliness result in additional loss of 6500 rupees to every Indian. Due to illness someone is not able to drive taxi or auto rickshaw or not able to distribute newspapers or not able to deliver milk. This is just the average of the total loss. If we take out affluent households then burden on poor people will go up to 12-15 thousand. If we just spread cleanliness, our poor will be saved 6500 rupees. This will save him from diseases and unemployment. This movement is very important for the health of the poor. Serving Mother India is serving the poorest. Brothers and sisters, we should gift something to Mahatma Gandhi. In 2019 when Gandhiji will turn 150, we should gift him a Swachh Bharat created

23

with a collective responsibility. Quit India was successful due to the involvement of everyone in the freedom struggle. Success of clean India lies in the involvement of 125 crore Indians. Now, this is the time to realise Mahatma Gandhi’s words. Just look at the purity of this great man’s words, its power, its dedication: Shouldn’t this inspire us? Whether it is me or you, success of clean India will give us the same pleasure as the success of Quit India slogan. It will give us similar joy and prosperity. We have started moving ahead with our faith in the words of these great men. Don’t put your trust on me or my Government, trust Mahatma Gandhi. Trust his sacrifice, determination and dedication. Believe in his dream of Swachh Bharat. Often when we go to foreign countries, we say how clean it was there, there was no dirt anywhere. Then I ask these people, did you like the fact that it was so clean? The secret of cleanliness is in the discipline of their citizens. If we manage that, I am sure we will do wonders. One more work is there – that of building toilets. I worship this work, that is why I request specially to media and countrymen with folded hands that associate this movement only with love for the country. Link this movement only with the worship of Mother India and with the poor and health of the poor. We should not vitiate the environment by talking about who is doing who is not, who was successful, who was not. We should move with a sense of collective responsibility. With collective responsibility we will surely be successful. Mahatma Gandhi dreamt of an India which was not only free but also clean and developed. Mahatma Gandhi secured freedom for Mother India. Now it is our duty to serve Mother India by keeping the country neat and clean. I take this pledge that I will remain committed towards cleanliness and devote time for this. I will devote 100 hours per year i.e. two hours per week to voluntary work for cleanliness. I will neither litter nor let others litter. I will initiate the quest for cleanliness with myself, my family, my locality, my village and my work place. I believe that the countries of the world that appear clean are so because their citizens don’t indulge in littering nor do they allow it to happen. I will endeavour to make them devote their 100 hours for cleanliness. I am confident that every step I take towards cleanliness will help in making my country clean. Jai Hind! modi translated his call for sanitation to direct action, leading from the front the means and processes, to develop the suitable technology and accomplish mass production at an affordable cost. This is a task worth doing. There is also a big scope of employment generation and an opportunity for tremendous economic activity and wealth creation from waste is achievable.”

“Who has given maximum strength to Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan? It is the children of India.” Safaigiri Summit and Awards, October 2, 2015 “We have no right to make our nation dirty.” The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said there can be no bigger inspiration than Mahatma Gandhi, for pursuing the vision of Swachh Bharat. In his remarks at the Safaigiri Summit and Awards 2015, the Prime Minister said that over the last one year, a lot of people had contributed towards this vision. The PM especially highlighted the positive and proactive role played by electronic media in this regard. The Prime Minister said Swachhata or cleanliness is a matter of habit. Once this habit is inculcated, an individual cannot tolerate an unclean environment. He said that while India has been a very conscious society in terms of personal hygiene, social hygiene had been neglected. This needed to be corrected, the Prime Minister added. The Prime Minister said that upto 1000 children die daily in India due to unhygienic conditions. He said that Swachh Bharat cannot be seen as merely a Government programme. He said this was everyone’s programme. If 125 crore people decide that India must be clean, it can be ensured, the Prime Minister said. Independence Day, August 15, 2016 “Honouring the women in the villages of India is another aspect of this initiative. Open defecation should be stopped – there should be toilets in villages. When I had the privilege to meet you from the ramparts of Red Fort the first time, I had expressed my feelings about how this can happen in our country. Today I can tell you that within this short period, more than 2 crore toilets have been built. More than 70 thousand villages have been freed from open defecation. We are working to make changes in the normal life of the people.”

Mann Ki Baat, 26th September 2016 “My dear countrymen, we had launched ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ two years ago on 2nd October, the birth anniversary of our revered Bapu. That day too I had said that cleanliness should become our nature, a duty for every citizen and there should be an atmosphere harbouring a sense of revulsion against filth. I had said ‘one step towards cleanliness’ and today we can say that each one of us has definitely tried to take one step further. This means that the country has taken 125 crore steps in the direction of achieving cleanliness. This affirms that the direction we have taken is correct and also fruits of the action are very sweet. If we talk of rural India, so far 2 crore 48 lakh or say about two and a half crore toilets have been constructed and we intend to build another one and a half crore toilets in the coming one year. From the point of view of sanitation and keeping in mind the dignity of our citizens, especially the dignity of our mothers and sisters, it is necessary to put an end to the habit of defecating in the open. And, with this in view ‘Open Defecation Free’ or ODF Campaign has been launched. In this age, just as cleanliness is related to health, connecting cleanliness to a revenue model is also equally necessary. Waste to wealth should also be one of its components. It is, therefore, imperative that we need to move towards ‘Waste to Compost’ along with the Cleanliness Mission. Solid waste should be processed and be converted into Compost. I invite youngsters to set up new ‘start ups’ also in this ‘Waste to Wealth’ movement to develop

“swachhata is a habit. once a person inculcates this habit, an individual cannot tolerate an unclean environment”

Swachh Shakti 2017, 8th March “2019 is the year of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. Pujya Bapu used to say that India resides in villages.” Further he said, “Given a choice to pick between freedom and cleanliness, I will ask for cleanliness.” This commitment shows Gandhiji’s passion for cleanliness. We have to work more and while in 2019 in commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi we have to ensure that cleanliness should become a part of our routine and be treated as our national identity. We will feel cleanliness in our veins. We want to reach at this point and the nation is capable of doing it. Here are those Sarpanch sisters who had made it possible in their villages. They have opposed defecation in open and strived to develop a new system. This makes me believe that the momentum gained in this effort can change things to a large extent, provided it is taken into action in a refined and time bound manner by 2019. You strive for Self-Help-Group in your village. Engage some persons in it. Make Compost manure from the village waste garbage. Sale of this compost will have earning for village panchayat. Land will be rejuvenated with better harvest for its natives. You take initiatives for the petty works that don’t require extra budget. You can make your village empowered in the same way you did it for cleanliness. You have cultivated the habit of cleanliness and it is a matter for that we have to take care on our own. The poor will be benefitted most from this exercise. Dirty conditions most adversely affect the poor, slum dwellers and the people consuming contaminated water.”

Only those who clean the country can chant Vande Mataram: PM Modi, Sep 11, 2017 People lose the right to chant Vande Mataram if they can’t keep the country clean, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said as he urged people to fight social evils such as disrespect to women. “I know many people might be hurt, but do we have the right to say it? Think 50 times if we have the right to say Vande Mataram,” Modi said, minutes after he was greeted with chants of Vande Mataram at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. “If we chew paan and spit on mother India, can we say Vande Mataram? If we throw all waste on mother India can we say Vande Mataram?” he asked, signaling that patriotic feelings should not come without social responsibilities. Modi also recalled what he said before promoting the Swachh Bharat campaign: Toilets, not temples, should be built first. “Today I am happy that there are daughters of India who vow not to get married if there’s no toilet (in the bridegroom’s home).” The Prime Minister hailed people working tirelessly to keep India clean, saying they imbibe the true spirit of Vande Mataram. Mann Ki Baat, Sep 24, 2017 “My dear countrymen, Just a few days ago someone drew my attention towards Bilal Dar, a young man of 18 years from Srinagar. And you will be glad to know that Srinagar Municipal Corporation has made him their brand ambassador and when there is a talk of brand ambassador, there is a general feeling that he/she must be a Cine artist or a sports-personality. But not in this case. Bilal Dar got connected to the ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’ or Cleanliness Campaign since the age of 12-13 years and has been working for the last 5 to 6 years. He clears plastic, polythene, used bottles, dry or wet waste – every piece of dirt from Asia’s biggest lake near Srinagar. He also earns from this

having seen poverty in childhood, narendra modi does not think of any kind of work as menial activity. His father had died of cancer at a very young age but he connected his livelihood with cleanliness. I congratulate Srinagar Municipal Corporation for taking this initiative towards sanitation and for their imagination to appoint an ambassador for this cause of cleanliness because Srinagar is a tourist destination and every Indian wants to go there; and if such attention is given to cleanliness it is a very big achievement in itself. And I am glad that they have not only appointed Bilal as their ambassador but also given him a vehicle, and also a uniform and he goes to other areas and educates people about cleanliness and inspires them and keeps tracking them till results are achieved. Bilal is very young agewise but is a source of inspiration for all of us who are interested in cleanliness. I congratulate Bilal Dar.” Gandhi Jayanti, OCTOBER 2, 2017 Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 30-minute long speech at an event to mark the 3rd anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission on Gandhi Jayanti, urged the nation to join hands to make the Swachh Bharat mission successful. Modi said, “No one likes uncleanliness. Everyone agrees that our country should be clean, but no one took the initiatives.” He urged people to dedicate themselves to the nation by giving just 10 minutes to the cleanliness drive. Modi lamented that usually, males urinate in open very frequently, without even realising their fault. He said, “I am sorry to say this but men start relieving themselves wherever they feel like. They must not think that they have the right to do it anywhere just because they are men. They must learn from women

who wait till they reach a proper place.” . Modi said, “Little kids are the real brand ambassadors of this mission. They don’t let people from their family litter. They have become aware and are making an attempt to make Bapu’s dream of clean India, come true. The younger generation has the most to lose as they will inherit a polluted and smelly earth from previous generations.” So, we must also make sure to keep our surroundings clean as the onus is not just on the government but on us too. As pointed out by Modi, “There are challenges but we can’t let things remain in the status quo”. This is a clarion call for each citizen of the country to get up and actively participate in keeping the country clean and reap the befits thereof. News18 Rising India Summit, March 16, 2018 “We all know that cleanliness is the first requirement for a healthy life, and by emphasising on it, we activated the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. As a result, by the year 2014, while earlier only 6.5 crore households had toilets in whole of India but now 13 million houses have toilets, i.e., a double increase. Today, the sanitation coverage has increased from 38 percent to 80 percent in the country. This increase is more than double. Apart from these cleanliness movement, messages have also reached to every household that dirt brings diseases along with it, while the cleanliness drives diseases away.” Swachhata hi Seva, 15 September, 2018 PM Narendra Modi announced the launch of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Movement’ from September 15. “Today, 90 per cent Indians have toilet facility, which was only 40 per cent before 2014. Over 4.15 lakh villages, 430 districts, 2,800 towns, 19 states and Union Territories have been declared open defecation-free,” the Prime Minister said. “I look forward to interacting with those who have worked assiduously on the ground to strengthen the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission after which swachhata (cleanliness) activities will begin,” he said. The Swachhata Hi Seva Movement’ (cleanliness is true service) is a great way to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, he said. The Swachh Bharat mission was launched by the Modi-government four years ago on October 2. The mission aims at making a clean and Open Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2019. “It is a historic mass movement aimed at fulfilling Bapu’s dream of a clean India.”

s Modi explained in an interview, “I am generally not inclined towards movies. But I used to watch them in my youth, out of that curiosity which only youth brings. Even then, it was never my temperament to watch movies just for entertainment. Instead, it was in my habit to search for lessons for life in the stories those movies told. I recall that, once, I went with some of my teachers and friends to watch the famous Hindi movie Guide that was based on a novel by R.K. Narayan. And, after the movie, I got into an intense debate with my friends. My argument was that the central idea in the movie was that, ultimately, everyone gets guided by his or her inner soul. But since I was too young, my friends did not take me seriously!” The film Guide made an impression on him for another purpose - the grim reality of drought and the visual imagery of helplessness that lack of water brings to farmers. And does Modi have a favourite song? The instantaneous response is Lata Mangeskar’s exhalting rendition of the song “ho pavan veg se udane vaale ghode......” from the film the 1961 film ‘Jai Chittor’? The raw energy of Bharat Vyyas’s inspiring lyrics, captured so emphatically in S.N. Tripathi’s composition have long remains Modi’s favourite - “tere kandhon pe aaj bhaar hai mevaad ka, karana padega tujhe saamana pahaad ka....haldeeghaatee nahin hai kaam koee khilavaad ka, dena javaab vahaan sheron ke dahaad ka...”

Modi & Selfies

Power Of A Good Selfie selfie-savvy Prime Minister Narendra Modi has connected with the common man and world leaders in equal measure

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi has a thing for technology, particularly social media. Right from the time social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook were gradually making their mark in India, Modi, then chief minister of Gujarat, was the quintessential first-mover, leaving his political rivals behind. Social media, for Modi and his governments — both at the state and now the centre — emerged as an integral part of communication with the masses, at least the ones with access to the Internet. It played a major role in his election as prime minister, amplifying Modi—the politician, the persona and the phenomenon as we know him today.

And then came the selfies. Who does not like taking selfies with great people? Common People, Celebs, Sports people and politicians all alike like taking selfies. It is the part of human nature these days. Modi is no exception. He has evolved himself over the time and catches up with new trends faster than youth. One of the reasons why he is popular among youth. By doing so he is also able to engage his voters more and create a better fan following. After all who does not like pictures on social media. Studies say we are more attracted to photos of our stars than written posts.
