Awesome Oasis by Jessica Percy Venture off the beaten path to Aruba’s arid, rocky and rugged windward coast and you might happen upon what appears to be a mirage. But you aren’t hallucinating in the hot sun! This is the Natural Pool – one of the island’s best-kept secret spots!

Locals call it “Cura di Tortuga”. Tortuga means turtle in Papiamento, the native language, and this natural enclosure was once used to hold captured sea turtles before sale. (Sea turtles are now protected by law.) Today, this breathtaking lagoon holds nothing but the promise of an awesome adventure and schools of colorful fish.

Though there is a manmade staircase carved into the stone, the surrounding rocks are slippery and sharp (aqua shoes are highly recommended), as if Mother Nature were protecting one of her natural treasures! If you are up to the adventure, you will be rewarded with an experience of a lifetime. The pool’s water is warmer than the ocean’s, and its slow churning motion is relaxing. Often, when the sea becomes restless, the pool can be turbulent with wildly crashing waves that sometimes cover you in an unexpectedly cool, yet refreshingly exhilarating shower. Some days the pool is peacefully calm offering superb snorkeling. Thrill seekers will enjoy leaping directly into the basin from the craggy cliffs.

The Natural Pool is one of most romantic and photogenic retreats on the island and the views from its highest point are magnificent. It can be difficult to find however, and even more difficult to drive to, even in a 4x4 vehicle, due to the surrounding lunar-like terrain. You are advised to take a Jeep or horseback tour with expert guides. Many visitors say that the wild bumpy ride to the pool is almost as much fun as the actual swim, and the horseback tour is also an enjoyable, memorable journey through Aruba’s unique countryside. Either way, this secluded natural wonder is well worth seeking out. Don’t forget your camera, sunscreen, refreshments… and, of course, your sense of adventure! 쮿
