Stonewall Tell Student Governance Council Candidates

Parent – 1-Year Lettice McBean I would like to serve on the School Governance Council because I want to impact and change the lives of our children at Stonewall Tell and in the South Fulton community. I am pleased to see the affect that Stonewall Tell is making in the st

community with the quality teachers and closing the student academic achievement gap. Currently, I have a 1 grader who attends Stonewall Tell and I’m excited about the transition from the Georgia Performance Standards to the new Common Core Curriculum and the impact of the charter system will have on the children of our community which is why I’m interested in serving on the School Governance. I am active in the Atlanta community. My interest and involvement within the community range from Girl Scouts of America, National Black Arts Festival, Urban League of Atlanta, United Way of Metro Atlanta, Community Hope and Outreach program, The GA Postpartum Support Network, Women Against Cancer and Stonewall Tell Local School Advisory Council. I currently hold a Master in Education from Queens College in New York and I am currently employed with Social Security Administration where public service is our number goal.

Carmen Modock I, Carmen Modock, am highly interested in serving on the School Governance Council as a voice to represent the school, Stonewall Tell Elementary and ask to be considered for this position. With my job experience as being an Engineering Manager for General Motors, where I was responsible for managing money and balancing budgets in order to get a job done, I understand how important the role of finances can be in the success of a project. Therefore, as a result, it is my belief that I can offer advice in order to get projects approved. Additionally, with myself currently being a College educator, I am knowledgeable of the future academic needs that will affect the children of today. This trait of mine is also important and can be offered to the council when discussing the types of supplies and resources necessary at the school in order to equip children academically. It is imperative for the success of the School Governance council, which is to mainly manage the school to meet the needs of the children, to have a diverse background of members to offer different perspectives that will overall satisfy the students, parents, teachers and the academic requirements. It will be my pleasure to be involved with such a great mission and that is why I am asking to hold a position on the School Governance Council.

Darlene Quincy My professional background has been in Information Technology for the past 22 years. I have an Associate Degree in Computer Science from Navarro College (Corsicana, Texas), Bachelors in Business Administration in Information Systems (Texas Wesleyan University, Fort Worth Texas) and a Master in Management of Technology (Southern Polytechnic Institute in Marietta GA). I've worked in technology in various companies from Lockheed Martin, The Weather Channel, Delta Airlines and now an employee at Turner Broadcasting. I'm considering this parent candidacy because I care about how our schools will be governed and the future education of our children. I desire to see that we have competitive education across our state and county lines. My children attend Stonewall Tell elementary and have been since 2009. I have a 6 year old daughter, Paige in 1st grade and a 2

nd

grade student, Austin Quincy. I've had firsthand

experience as a parent seeing the growth in Stonewall Tell and the leadership. I will be able to assist in contributing the next level of governance council to move our school forward by staying committed and engaged for the success of our children. I am not an expert in education, but I am an expert in making sure we have the same access and education across our schools. I hope to be the best support through partnering with the other council members and taking on a new journey that focuses on moving our children ahead.

Parent – 2-Year Gary Andrews In 1992, I graduated from the University of Georgia, with a degree in Economics. I also hold graduate degrees from Georgia State University in Sports Marketing (MS) and Law (JD). In October of 1999, I opened my own law firm of Andrews & Knowles, LLC. In 2003, the firm added another partner and changed the firm's name to Andrews, Knowles, & Princenthal LLC. I am married to Philida L. Andrews, M.D, who practices internal medicine at Piedmont Austell. We are the proud parents of Garrison Brice, 4th grade, and Grant Blake, 2nd grade. Both are attending Stonewall Tell Elementary. It is often said that the success of a school and the students it serves comes through the shared responsibility of the staff and entire school community, and this is why I wish to serve on the School Governance Council. I understand that the success of any school centers on the communication and participation between the school's administration, students, and parents. As a lawyer, who has dealt with many tough issues, I can work with others to improve our student achievement and performance. Finally, as a parent, I have the ability to respect the opinion of others and making sure we are all striving for a common goal which is improving upon what we have and creating something better for the future.

Yngrid Huff As Fulton County embarks upon new ground, I feel compelled to join arms with fellow trailblazers charting the path through the first cohort of school flexibility, to ensure the academic success of all children within our school district, particularly those children at Stonewall Tell Elementary School. After completing my bachelor’s degree at Fort Valley State University and master’s degree at the University of Georgia in Agricultural Economics, I began my professional career as a research coordinator at the University of Georgia. One year later, I was chosen to fill the role of planning analyst in the Operational Planning Department at Fulton County Schools. Throughout my 14 year career with this organization, I have held the titles of analyst, Coordinator of Student Assignment and presently, Executive Director of Operational Planning and Student Assignment. My department is responsible for the short and long term-enrollment projections, attendance zone redistricting, supporting long and short term capital program planning, verifying school attendance boundaries, and managing intra-district transfers. th

I have been a part of the Stonewall Tell Elementary community since 2009 when my oldest daughter enrolled in the 4 grade. I currently have a son in third grade and a daughter in kindergarten and serve on the PTA nominating committee. I am very passionate about the education of my children. While I am not a formally trained educator, I am an educational advocate for my children and the children in my community. I personally feel that we as parents, especially parents of African-American children, have to remove the blinders of acceptance and push harder for the equal and appropriate education of our children. Meeting expectations is no longer acceptable if we expect our children to adequately compete on the global stage over the next 50 plus years. The bar of expectation is often weighed down with excuses of social economic conditions, parental involvement, and other environmental factors that really should not impact the rigor and instruction our children deserve. One size does not fit all; but when modifications and flexibility can be leveraged to reach each student, real learning can occur, even to the most challenged student in our midst. It is for this reason that I am willing and committed to serve as a parent member of the School Governance Council for Stonewall Tell Elementary School. I have seen first-hand the impact that sound instruction and superior educational leadership can make on the life of a child. If given flexibility to reach above the norm, I am confident this school and governance team can shatter the glass ceiling of education expectations across not only this district but the entire nation.

Fredrick Lynch I currently serve as a Senior Accountant at Manheim Corporation with over 12 years of accounting and budgeting experience. I have obtained a Master’s in Accounting and Financial Management from Devry University. I believe that education is the corner stone of a student’s success in addition to having an active parent in the school system. My accounting and educational experience will be a great asset in the budgeting process for this Council. Additionally, I have also held the position of PTA-President for Foundation Christian Academy. This invaluable service opportunity allowed me to work closely with the leadership of the school and to be the representative of the parents. I believe that each parent should work closely with the educators to ensure that they are of one accord for their child’s success. My ultimate reason to want to participate on this Council is to offer my services to the public in any capacity with only gaining the reward of being a model servant to the students.

Alicia Smith I have been a parent volunteer for my child classroom since her arrival at Stonewall Tell Elementary school of August of 2011. My involvement in helping and being a concerned parent as well as a volunteer to help children has brought me much joy and satisfaction. If elected, I would serve to the best of my ability to aid the school, community and members on the School Governance Council. The education of our children starts with the parents and having a community who care. I know that a difference can be made by me. Ericka J. Thompson I am Ericka J Thompson, current LSAC member and life-long member of the community. I matriculated through the Fulton County school system and now take a very active role as a parent in the educational process of all children. I am the proud parent of a second grader and rising Kindergartner. My ties with the Stonewall Tell community were present before my children were school age. I am committed to the highest quality of education and support is success in my local school. I would consider it a privilege to be the voice of parents that share this vision. I am committed to serving our children, our community and our school.

Rodney Wilkerson Greetings Parents, rd

My name is Rodney K. Wilkerson. My daughter, Gabrielle Wilkerson, is a 3 grade student at Stonewall Tell Elementary. I’m currently teaching middle grades math in Clayton County. For the past four years I’ve served on our school council as a teacher representative. I truly believe in the old adage that it takes a community to raise a child. During my tenure as a council representative, I’ve been able to hear concerns and request from stakeholders on the other side of the table. In addition, parents, business leaders, and administrators have been able to hear our concerns as teachers. Ultimately, we all have the best interest at heart……the students! Each and every day our goal is to have each seat filled with a child who is engaged in their learning. We also would like for parents to be involved in the daily learning of their child. I know this can be difficult at times, but we must remember that in order for a child to be successful it is the responsibility of each stakeholder. As Fulton county ventures into unchartered waters with charter schools, it’s even more important that all stakeholders including our very own children are a part of such decisions. If given the opportunity to be a part of the school council at Stonewall Tell, it would be an honor to learn and grow both professionally and as a parent. Sincerely, Rodney K. Wilkerson

Teacher – 1-Year Libra Burton I have been an educator and a lover for education for almost 18 years. I have had the privilege to work with my previous school on the school improvement committee to increase parental involvement and student achievement. I am currently the TAG educator for Stonewall Tell ES and a TAG Support Mentor Educator for other TAG educators. I currently have my Masters & Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership; Teacher Support Specialist; Gifted Specialist; and ESOL endorsed. My reasoning for serving on the School Governance Council is to assist with ideas and strategies to ensure all students are being enriched; maintain and expand the enriching quality of instruction at our school; and continue the enrichment of TAG students who are being served in our school. I am also one of the stakeholders at our school. I too live in the community and one day my/our daughter will attend Stonewall Tell ES‌I want the same high caliber of instruction and learning (if not higher) to remain once she begins her educational journey in elementary school. Thank you.

Dia Hunter My faith has taught me the importance of establishing one's principles and being true to them. This, I believe, is what adds value to one's character. I am learning to be transparent and genuine. As I continue to mature, I am also learning how to not be ashamed of my flaws, but rather to embrace them, accept them, and finally to change them. In this way I have become a reflective practitioner. Because of my beliefs, I am proudly in a perpetual state of growth and development. I am constantly seeking truth and wisdom, and I am truly afraid of ever becoming stagnant or complacent. This, I believe, is the essence of learning. It is commitment to the process of discovery and self-Improvement. It is the heart of true education, and it is what fuels my passion to teach and to reach others who are also seeking to better understand themselves and the world around them. Because this comes from such an authentic place in my heart, I believe it translates well to others and it is why I know that touching the lives of others through education is my gift. I have been involved in education in a variety of positions over the last 15 years. In 1995, I served as a peer instructor of a course called "Achieving Academic Success," which was designed to address the needs of first-time college students (most of whom were also first-generation college students). In 1996, I was employed as a reading instructor for a Summer Reading Program for second graders. Shortly thereafter, I also began serving as a camp and after school counselor for a catholic school in Atlanta, GA. In 2001, I was asked to serve as Director of Development and Admissions at St. Peter Claver Regional catholic School in Decatur, GA. During the same year, I founded my own out-of-school program business called Crosswalks, which I successfully operated in multiple Atlanta-area private schools for 5 years. In 2006, while completing my master's degree program, I worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Georgia Institute of Technology. I consider this to be an especially noteworthy experience given that I was able to successfully complete my master's degree on only one academic year. After working in the construction industry as a project engineer for 3 years, I returned to my passion for educating others in 2010 when I began teaching as an Adjunct professor at Westwood College. In addition, I have served as a subject matter expert (SME) assisting in the development of two new online courses, Emerging Trends in Project Management and Leadership Challenges in Construction Management for New School of Architecture and Design in San Diego, CA. I was selected to serve as an Area Governor for GA Toastmasters Division A. I've taught in Dekalb County and City of Atlanta Schools. I believe that my professional and personal experiences make me a strong leader in education. I seek to be a leader in education, not to achieve accolades or personal recognitions, but to make contributions to education on a larger scale for the benefit of the students whose futures have been placed in the care of their teachers and administrators.

Strategic Plan 2017 This is the school system’s roadmap for how Fulton County Schools aims to improve student achievement over the next five years. Three goals serve as the district’s measure for long-term student success,

Counselor’s Corner

which is that students will graduate on time and be ready for college or the workforce. •

Graduation Rate – 90% of Fulton students will graduate

on time •

College Readiness – 85% of Fulton’s seniors will be

eligible for admission to a University System of Georgia college or university •

Career Readiness – 100% of Fulton's graduates will be

work-ready certified “These are big goals, but they are attainable,” said Superintendent

Improve Your Discipline “Use Consequences for Misbehavior”

Avossa. “Our strategic plan is focused on improving outcomes for all students, and the only way to do this is to set measurable goals and put supports in place to help our students and staff to reach them.” To that end, as part of its “Building Our Future” strategic planning initiative, the school system will focus on five key areas – instruction, people, technology, effective schools and resources – to drive improvement. •

Instruction – Students will be engaged in learning that

enables them to reach their full potential for college and career readiness •

People – Fulton County Schools will attract and retain the

most talented and effective employees in K-12 education •

Technology – Students, parents, teachers and

administrators will have the tools and information they need to accelerate learning •

Having consequences for misbehavior helps children learn to behave. Consequences provide structure and help children know where they stand. Consequences are most effective when you: • Pose them in a manner. Say, “Yes, you can go play as soon as you finish cleaning your room.” Avoid saying, “No, you can’t play because you haven’t cleaned your room.” • Focus on the behavior you want, rather then the consequences. You don’t always need to tell your child what the consequence is. Knowing the consequence may actually encourage his/ her to weigh his/her options at times. • Get your child to come up with the consequence. This beats just imposing it. For example, what should happen if your child fights with a sibling?

Operational Planning In November 2011, Fulton County voters approved a one-penny education sales tax to fund new schools, renovations and additions, and provide enhanced technology across the county. The fiveyear building and construction plan calls for some of the district’s most outdated schools to be replaced with new state-of-the-art facilities. In order to move forward with those plans, three elementary schools in South Fulton – Oak Knoll, Harriet Tubman, and Mt. Olive – are slated for closure due to aging facility conditions. These would be replaced by two new schools – one at the former College Park Elementary School site and another at yet-to-be-determined location. If approved by the school board, the schools would be closed after the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 school years.

Middle and high school boundaries Also at the meetings, school system staff will ask parents for input into how new boundaries should be drawn for South Fulton middle and high schools. The revised attendance zones are necessary due to the recent opening of the new Banneker High School, which has available space due to its larger size. Middle school enrollments also are being reviewed to balance the number of students among schools.

The schedule for the three rounds of community meetings are as follows: •Round 1 – Monday, Oct. 29 (Woodland MS) and Tuesday, Oct. 30 (Banneker HS) •Round 2 – Monday, Nov. 26 (Woodland MS) and Tuesday, Nov. 27 (Banneker HS) •Round 3 – Monday, Dec. 10 (Woodland MS) and Tuesday, Dec. 11 (Banneker HS)

Each meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Parents should only plan to attend one meeting per round at either location. Final recommendations will be presented in January 2013 with approval expected in February.

History is an important part of our lives and we must show our children that as well. America has come a long way from where it used to be and some may say that it still has a ways to go. Either way it is up to us, as parents, to communicate history as we have experienced it to our children. This will help to teach a wellrounded life applied perspective of historical events in conjunction with the stories provided in history books taught by educators. As many in the community know, Stonewall Tell was home to many Georgia Voters for Election Day 2012. There were community members here as early as 5:30am Tuesday even though the polls weren’t officially open until 7:00am. I saw young people, parents, and grandparents alike coming in to let their voices be heard throughout their country. However, the highlight of my morning was when I saw a family of four come in, the youngest being about 6, they were explaining the importance of Election Day to the little one. They told him that one day he would get to vote too for who will “run the world.” The little boy looked as if he understood and said “cool”; but as they exited the building -all with their voting stickers -they carried him out screaming “but I want to vote now mommy…” The child was in distress because though he’d gotten a sticker too, he didn’t get to push the buttons to vote himself. So, I thought to myself as they exited the building, if a 6- year -old who barely understands the concept of voting will get that upset today just imagine how much more emphatic he will be when he is of the age to voice his opinions and cast his own vote while truly understanding its significance. That should be an inspiration to all parents to train up a child in the way that they should go so as to encourage them that they can always make a difference in the world no matter how small it may seem. What matters is that we teach our children the difference in right from wrong while explaining to them the reasons behind the history we teach. This brings a deeper understanding that they will grow to appreciate each year a little more than the year before.

Ms. Golden
