Word of the Day- Vocabulary Builders

Monday: Panorama

Tuesday: Articulate Wednesday: Preposterous Thursday: Eccentric Friday: Rational

Golden Encouragement Ms. Golden The late George Washington Carver said, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” With an education we can do anything we put our minds to and more. An education allows our children a higher chance of success in the world we live in today. We may have come a long way from 1957 when Little Rock High School was integrated but we must not forget that “freedom is never given ;it is won” (A.P. Randolph). Had it not been for some educated people who knew how to open the right doors we would probably be in the same situation struggling to educate our children. So we should continue to thank our leaders of the past and present for not giving up on making sure everyone has a chance to be taught and the opportunity to excel higher than those who came before them. We should even thank our Principal, Mr. Flounnory, for hiring some of the best educators to educate your children! Education is a very important aspect in how even we as adults have gotten to the point we are at. Education= Freedom… if you have one you have definitely won the other so Congratulations! It is the policy of Fulton County School Systems not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age or disability, in any employment practice, educational programs or any other program, activity or service. From The Desk of Nurse Plott Fulton County Schools Illness Policy: Please remember that sending a sick child to school may cause them to spread the virus to other students and staff members. Additionally, we want your child to feel well enough to be at school and learn. Students who are sick, contagious (potential or actual) and/or have a fever greater than 100.4 MUST NOT be sent to school. In order to return to school, a student should be fever free for at least 24 hours and not require medications to reduce fever; and in some cases must be cleared to return to school by a health care provider. When a student becomes ill at school, runs a fever, has a potential contagious illness or has a more serious health problem while at school, the parent/guardian will be notified to pick-up their child immediately. The parent/guardian MUST ARRANGE for the student to be taken home. Again, a note from a doctor may be requested by the school before your child can return to school. In order for us to be able to contact you quickly, in case your child is sick or has an emergency, please be sure all your emergency phone numbers and contacts are updated in our computer system. Please refer to the CDC’s website for a complete guide to information about the flu, prevention strategies and continuous updates on the flu season: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/fluseason-2012-2013.htm In Fulton County Schools, Student Health Services works in collaboration with the school clinics and school staffs to insure the guidelines for identifying, containing, reporting and preventing suspected and/or confirmed infectious illnesses are followed. In addition, this year in some schools we have offered flu clinics for students and staff. By working together, we can help reduce the transmission of the flu and other infectious illnesses in the schools and community. For more information, please contact the Office of Student Health Services at (404) 305-2177. Lynne P. Meadows, RN, MS, Coordinator, Student Health Services

Counselor’s Corner Robin Elder -School Counselor How to Manage Anger

Page | 6 Strategic Plan 2017 This is the school system’s roadmap for how Fulton County Schools aims to improve student achievement over the next five years. Three goals serve as the district’s measure for long-term student success, which is that students will graduate on time and be ready for college or the workforce. • Graduation Rate – 90% of Fulton students will graduate on time

Constantly blowing your stack not only alienates others, it can contribute to health problems, including headaches, stomach upset and heart attack. To take control: Count to 10 & take 3 or 4 deep breaths. Ask yourself: “Will this really matter a year from now?” Walk it off. Go for a short stroll. Find a place where you can think out loud and take a second look at how you are reacting to a situation. Distract yourself. Example: In a traffic jam, play soothing music instead of pounding the horn. At work, dive into a task to turn negative energy positive.

• College Readiness – 85% of Fulton’s seniors will be eligible for admission to a University System of Georgia college or university • Career Readiness – 100% of Fulton's graduates will be work-ready certified “These are big goals, but they are attainable,” said Superintendent Avossa. “Our strategic plan is focused on improving outcomes for all students, and the only way to do this is to set measurable goals and put supports in place to help our students and staff to reach them.”

Keep a log. Monitor hostile thoughts to discover how frequently your temperature rises. This will help sort out the real causes of your anger, which are often things beyond control.

To that end, as part of its “Building Our Future” strategic planning initiative, the school system will focus on five key areas – instruction, people, technology, effective schools and resources – to drive improvement.

ASK for help. Don’t be afraid to try counseling, meditation, lifestyle changes or other kinds of ongoing psychological help. Your health may depend on it.

• Instruction – Students will be engaged in learning that enables them to reach their full potential for college and career readiness

FYI…

Student Hardship Applications are due

February 15, 2013. NO EXCEPTIONS

Beginning January 2013, parents of Fulton County students can apply for a 2013-2014 hardship transfer to another Fulton County School or request renewal of an existing hardship transfer. For more information, contact: Student Assignment Office 404-763-5550 www.fultonschools.org/studentassignment.

• People – Fulton County Schools will attract and retain the most talented and effective employees in K-12 education • Technology – Students, parents, teachers and administrators will have the tools and information they need to accelerate learning • Effective Schools – School leadership will be collaborative and will balance innovation with accountability • Resources – Student needs will be supported with efficient and effective allocation of staff, instructional materials and equipment.

The strategic plan will guide the system’s direction over the next five years and is the result of many conversations with the school board, teachers and school leaders as well as engagement with parents and the community. The plan is posted at www.fultonschools.org/StrategicPlan2017.

Talented And Gifted- February Critical Thinking

February’s Higher Order/Critical Thinking Activities Blurb:

This month we will focus on Direct Analogies… Direct Analogy allows the students to compare two concepts or objects directly. Allow your child to answer the following analogies…Please send responses to Mrs. Burton~ TAG Room B125…

• •

How is a map like a shoe? How is a recipe like a jogging trail?

• •

How is a book like a picture? How is a heart like a computer?

ATTENTION PARENTS: EARLY MORNING DROP OFF ROUTINE The morning times and dropping off your student is a very important part of the day. But we need your help to make it run as expeditiously as possible. We have over 200 yards of sidewalk and you do not have to wait until the children are directly in front of the door to drop off. By doing this you are helping with the “healthy kid, fit kid” plan we are a part of as well as helping the students to not be tardy to class. Please assist us in making to morning drop off as efficient as possible.
