Golden Encouragement

By Ms. Golden Scan here for the digital edition:

According to the Center for Disease Control, the single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year. Good health habits may also help protect you against the flu. But what are we doing to protect ourselves from the germs of the seasonal people in our lives? Just as cautious as we are about keeping ourselves and our children healthy during this time of year; we should take just as much (sometimes more) precaution with the other "germs" we let in our lives that may harm us, this can be anything from the foods we eat, habits we have formed and even the people we have chosen to keep us company. We take the extra time to physically clean the areas around us so that we do not get the flu but not often enough do we mentally clean out the "germs" that have accumulated in our lives. So as we move closer to the end of winter let's think about how much healthier our lives could be if we could clean out some of the things that we do not need in the spring. Remember, some people are meant to be in your life for a season others for a lifetime but the choice is completely yours. Happy cleaning!

Page 2 From The Desk of Nurse Plott Fulton County Schools Illness Policy: Please remember that sending a sick child to school may cause them to spread the virus to other students and staff members. Additionally, we want your child to feel well enough to be at school and learn. Students who are sick, contagious (potential or actual) and/or have a fever greater than 100.4 MUST NOT be sent to school. In order to return to school, a student should be fever free for at least 24 hours and not require medications to reduce fever; and in some cases must be cleared to return to school by a health care provider. When a student becomes ill at school, runs a fever, has a potential contagious illness or has a more serious health problem while at school, the parent/guardian will be notified to pick-up their child immediately. The parent/guardian MUST ARRANGE for the student to be taken home. Again, a note from a doctor may be requested by the school before your child can return to school. In order for us to be able to contact you quickly, in case your child is sick or has an emergency, please be sure all your emergency phone numbers and contacts are updated in our computer system. Please refer to the CDC’s website for a complete guide to information about the flu, prevention strategies and continuous updates on the flu season: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season2012-2013.htm In Fulton County Schools, Student Health Services works in collaboration with the school clinics and school staffs to insure the guidelines for identifying, containing, reporting and preventing suspected and/or confirmed infectious illnesses are followed. In addition, this year in some schools we have offered flu clinics for students and staff. By working together, we can help reduce the transmission of the flu and other infectious illnesses in the schools and community. Counselor’s Corner Robin Elder -School Counselor Being a parent is the most demanding job in the world, yet most of us train “on the job.” When things are going well, savor the moment. When things are not going well you may feel stressed and overwhelmed. •

Are you sleeping and eating too much or too little?

Do you take your frustrations out on your kids?

Do you feel out of control?

• Do you feel as if your children misbehave on purpose? • Do you strike out physically or verbally when angry? • Do you have chronically upset stomach or muscle aches, especially in your back and neck? • Are you frustrated because your children don’t listen? •

Do you feel as if you pick on one particular child?

Do you feel as if you can’t talk to your kids?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you may need to reach out for help. Call your school counselor for resources and information.

FYI…

Student Hardship Applications are due

February 15, 2013. NO EXCEPTIONS

Strategic Plan 2017 This is the school system’s roadmap for how Fulton County Schools aims to improve student achievement over the next five years. Three goals serve as the district’s measure for longterm student success, which is that students will graduate on time and be ready for college or the workforce. • Graduation Rate – 90% of Fulton students will graduate on time • College Readiness – 85% of Fulton’s seniors will be eligible for admission to a University System of Georgia college or university • Career Readiness – 100% of Fulton's graduates will be work-ready certified “These are big goals, but they are attainable,” said Superintendent Avossa. “Our strategic plan is focused on improving outcomes for all students, and the only way to do this is to set measurable goals and put supports in place to help our students and staff to reach them.” To that end, as part of its “Building Our Future” strategic planning initiative, the school system will focus on five key areas – instruction, people, technology, effective schools and resources – to drive improvement. • Instruction – Students will be engaged in learning that enables them to reach their full potential for college and career readiness • People – Fulton County Schools will attract and retain the most talented and effective employees in K-12 education • Technology – Students, parents, teachers and administrators will have the tools and information they need to accelerate learning • Effective Schools – School leadership will be collaborative and will balance innovation with accountability • Resources – Student needs will be supported with efficient and effective allocation of staff, instructional materials and equipment.

The strategic plan will guide the system’s direction over the next five years and is the result of many conversations with the school board, teachers and school leaders as well as engagement with parents and the community. The plan is posted at www.fultonschools.org/StrategicPlan2017.
