umber 15- Stoked! The fixed gear scene has changed- for better or worse? It is up to you to decide.

A guy carrying a fixed bike on the poster of a big fashion company, a can of an energy drink inviting you to win your “own fixie... Fun to see how this developed over a few years. I am still riding my bikes as I did in the old days - may it be a fixed, mountain or downhill bike - the feeling is still the same..fun! While I am publishing a fixed gear magazine, I wish some people in this scene would not be so ignorant when it comes to riding other bikes - in the end it is about enjoying your ride. In this issue we show you once again the pure joy of riding your bike and hope you will jump on yours, even when the weather is not that tempting anymore - at least in Europe!

Ride on! Greg Falski

While on Eurobike I meet up with Fish and asked him if he would be interested to write a bit for SOFB about racing and stuff! Please check Red Hook Crit story on page 64!

Red hook crit is a very special concept. From the second I heard about it from a dear friend I had just met at the temporary camping toilets at Eurobike Friedrichshafen, it felt like that was my thing. As an ex-road and -trackracer, bikemessenger/mechanic, I done some crazy mileage. Two and a half year later, we have F.A.S.T. a team of really fast fixed gear riders, and Fendor Bendor man Olaf Wit. Wit industries/F.A.S.T is racing on a settled dutch model trackbike by Koga: the fullpro track. Then we got more support from Kmc chains, Sockeloen, Holleboom transport, and A.L.W.T. but mostly the guys and our friends are the reason why we can do this crazy new thing. Winning a Red Hook Crit was a goal of mine. I realized of course that this win was not head to head with Neil Bezdek; the one to watch. And I also realized this win (technical wise) has something to do with 20 years of racing bike skills. Because the shape could be much better to take on Neil or the others on a less technical course. Racing a Red Hook Crit or for that matter any crit, is also knowing your bike and making decisions for setting it up. You need a lot of knowledge. As showed the only race I missed; Brooklyn Navy Yard... pinch flat galore. But even a change of winds is something that makes you setup the bike differently. All in all its the same old story, fixed gear bike mechanics know it too well: most people who don't know think fixed gear bikes are easy. What could go wrong with just one gear? Well, I can tell you from experience that everything could go wrong with a fixed gear if you don't do it right. Its the simplicity of the bike that makes it hard. I mean, untill you know. This is also the bottom line of Fixed gear crits: it seems so simple but all together you need to take care of every single detail, whereas a racing bike in general will take you anywhere as long as you showed your bike I little bit of bikeshop love. This is why I love fixed gear bikes. Its a small science and you really need to know what your doing. Its an extention of myself and luckily enough I master it . Don't take it for granted and you'll be better. Fish. 11

GIRO DI MORIA Photos: Agi Kolyvas, Xristos Tsounis and Vagelis Paravas Text : Agi Kolyvas

The Brovet: Giro Di Moria was a cycling event organized by 48x17 Cycles at the last weekend of May The plan was simple, to pass through some of the most beautiful and scenic routes of Peloponnesse, South Greece riding our roadbikes as a pack. Although the event was not a race, everybody knew that there was going to be some crazy riding at high speed if you wanted to follow the leading group and everybody came prepared for some pain and pleasure.

We spent 3 days out riding camping, climbing, chating and charging but the atmosphere around the people apres-bike was the most valuable thing. Greece has some incredible bike terrain and great weather and the route chosen was a mixture of country roads riding at sea level, then climbing the mountains to cross on the other side.

Pelopponissos is a place full of ancient history, temples, castles and monasteries are scattered around and most of the country roads offer images of a still undiscovered land.

15

The event was not a race so there was no real winner, but there was a recorded time for each rider for every riding day and one for the whole brovet. Prizes from Tokyo Fixed, Milani, Fizik and Salice made the riding a little bit sweater after all. Brovet was nice because it was a personal challenge for each one of us both physically and mentally, just like cycling should be. We liked that for some of us was fast but for others was just an excuse to ride through places and villages otherwise forgotten.

The first pack was a little bit competitive in a nice way, Jon Coreman from Holland was unstopable riding his Pinarello with incredible ease even in the most brutal climbs. Petros Gkotsis stayed at his shadow cleverly enough while John Mour broke away right before Andritsaina and nobody saw him till the end where Jon and Petros started a little TT chase but Jon Mour held the lead with 55 seconds. An exciting and challenging weekend full of riding for all of us! Stay tuned for more Brovet events:

The women's competition was held over three rounds of two heats which were dominated by the two Brixton Cycles riders Sarah Connell, Niki Dukess-Kovacs and Scottish rider Ishbel Taromsari (Pedal Power) winner of this year’s Rollapaluza National Series. The heats were all quite close leaving the final without a clear favourite , Taromsari was draw no1 and didn’t give up the number one spot even when the derny bike pulled off, she held onto the lead until the final bend when the two Brixton riders came over the top and contested the sprint with Sarah Connell just beating her team mate Nikki Dukes-Kovacs by a wheels length with Sarah Brook (MuleBar Girl Sigma Sport) taking third place with the fading Taromsari in fourth and Laura Cheeseman (Prestige Velo) and Laura greenhaigh (Twickenham CC) in fifth and sixth respectively.

The senior men’s race was run over three rounds of five heats with an omnium style scoring system to determine the finalists, with all riders getting a chance to ride in a final. From the heats it was possible to pick out the favourites with John Paul (City of Edinburgh RC) looking outstanding and seemingly able to win from any position other riders that stood out were Dutchman Michael Veen (AR&TV De Adelaar) Italian Luco Lupo (Team 99 Milano) Matt Rotherham (Sportcity Velo) former Rollapaluza National Series winner Miles Joule Stovold (Swinnerton) and impressive newcomer Dan Bray who was competing in only his second ever race. In the first heat Lupo tried to take Rotherham out the back but the Sportcity rider stayed calm and gradually worked himself back into the group showing experience beyond his age. The only one of the favourites not to make the eight man final was the Italian rider Luco Lupo, It was no surprise that the dominant John Paul took the win from Matt Rotherham, Tom Baker (Performance Cycle Coaching) was the final rider on the podium, well deserved for his consistent performances throughout the day. Rotherhams team mate at Sportcity Velo, Leon Gledhill took fourth place, Stovold and Veen finished fifth and sixth respectively with the newcomer Dan Bray in seventh and Barnaby Swinnerton (Swinnerton Cycles) taking eight. PLEASE TELL US HOW YOUR SHOP WAS BORN, AND HOW THE CREW MET... The store was not created by chance, I ‘ve always loved the bike. With a passionate father how love old things , especially bicycles ..... I always bathed in the atmosphere , he often took me to flea markets . He specialized as a result , starting to restore and sell bikes , parts .... it was the beginnings of the Internet , and he quickly established an international clientele. I naturally followed , as well as my brother Stefano . Apart from old bicycles, we got used very quickly to a fixed gear bicycle , when it appeared in Paris around 2007 . It was easy for us to ride our bikes , thanks to our fathers parts accumulated over the years . At the time , nobody wanted track bikes ! The next logical step was the store .... A degree for being a bike mechanic in our pocket , we opened ... Brands we distribute include Cinelli , Atala in urban bikes , and the famous EXS . We create and modify many bikes , based on old steel frames , we do it all! And of course, always restoring old bicycles . We also have a large selection in spare parts , modern or old .... MKS , Sugino , Brooks, Velo Orange, BLB , Miche ... and the old , Campagnolo , Huret , Stronglight ..

http://la-bicyclette.over-blog.com/

The spirit of the store is young , relaxed! We always have friends who come say hello, many come also discuss ... we suggest much about choosing a frame , parts .... it is not uncommon to have 20 people after closing time and beer also ! WHERE DO YOU THINK FIXED GEAR WILL BE IN A YEAR FROM NOW? The future of fixed ? Fixed has democratised many lately, it has become a full-fledged urban bike for all ages , including girls and boys . Only the style has changed, we are no longer the era of the early fluorescent bicycles , we are now being asked more sober bikes , just go anywhere , or so, with the lure of retro now , the old style of bike with Brooks saddle , wooden rims ..... I think it is more of a fashion phenomenon , as in the beginning , but it has become a classic in its own right . Would like to thank all the people who support us, those of fgfs : nucult , soundtrack , etc. .. Those rolls : CATZ’N’SHIT , rock’n’rollin , street pistard , etc. .. And all the others!

FISH “My fifth Red Hook Crit was for F.A.S.T. as a whole team its premier. After a long and rather chaotic (in mostly the fun way) trip in our little truck (courtesy of holleboom transport holland). We arrived to Barcelona. We found a great spot next to the Marina harbour of the forum. After rather underholding quarrels with the security agents, we started our qualification laps in the last scheduled group of the afternoon. The one with Mash and all the other favourites. F.A.S.T rode away from the group early. But lacked routine, which is completely understandable. I was later foolishly betting on the group lap aka the MASH train. This was maybe even more unsatisfying Nevertheless we did well as a team, everyone was qualified exept for our women racer Stefania Baldi. Our ranks in the starting grid varied from 11 to 46.

65

66

online magazine issuE 15 / 2013

My start position was 11. My ranking in the champs was 16 after missing the navy yard and finishing 8 in red hook At the start call I missed my pedal which I hardly ever miss. It had also started drizzling and the pack was scanning the course while the leaders were fighting for first lap prime.

67

For half way prime Neil Bezdek and me thought we were sprinting for that prime. But we both misunderstood the call for it and Neil quite easily stayed ahead of me in our attempted sprint. Being all tired from it Evan Murphy took the real prime sprint which was actually taken at the 14 laps to go mark. Neil and I needed a little rest.

Kyle Murphy attacked succesfully not long after the mid way prime. On a Good tactical point in the race. Four others jumped along; Evan, Neil, Rainer and a Spanish Rider (name?). Francesco Martucchi also reacted but there was a gap. I followed Francesco, still yello in my legs... he turned his head around to see If I could help bridging the gap. I shaked; no.

Francesco kept riding and I followed. The leading group started looking at eachother so Francesco closed the gap. Then they started riding again. Francesco and me caught our breath in the wake of the leaders and took our turns hauling when we were next in line. I felt better now. I guess Francesco too. We fell still again. I yelled to keep organized. Neil agreed and the rest followed. I wanted to keep the speed high. So I took any possibility to do so. But closer to the end the 'back wheel sucker' tactics came loose and no one wanted to get to the lead anymore so I hauled for more then a lap. But keeping somewhat of speed. Evan didnt like my racing. He yelled at me for no real good reason. (After an incident in new york with him i'm sure its the tension of the racing) Finally I found a way for them to take the lead and I fell back into the leading group. A dog fight started and one by one riders tried to attack. I jumped their back wheel immediately. Neil bailed somewhere here I think. 68

stoked on fixed bikes

online magazine issuE 15 / 2013

Coming out of the chicane after U-turn 2 Evan gave up his lead and Francesco also stopped pedalling. My momentum was perfect as I speeded up under that roof, and slingshotted out of the chicane with no one blocking me. I took the chance of a long solo sprint. One that is not easy to be won, unless your name is Mark Cavendish. I accelerated and took the last turn so fast It was on the edge but I didnt slide, instead I kept momentum and sitting down sprinting I could hit the finish line first. Kyle and Evan followed on some metres. Everyone in F.A.S.T finished. A good first race for us! “

....In SOFB we know Garths photos from mtb and motocross publications, and need to say they are just stunning! He started to photograph fixed gear, it is a rather small part of his work/portfolio, still we asked him about that..

with GARTH MILAN

online magazine issuE 15 / 2013

SOFB - You live in Laguna Beach.. how does this influence you and your work? Living in Laguna definitely influences me in my life and in my work; mostly through its vast beauty, but also its laid-back attitude. Laguna loves artists as much as artists love Laguna. The surrounding nature has a way of speaking to people there, and of all the different places I’ve been to in the world, there is definitely a genuine “vibe” that can be tangibly felt there. SOFB - fixed gear is growing all over the world, when was your first contact with this sport? I had known and respected the fixed gear scene for quite some time, but for me, the Red Bull TK event in San Francisco was my first real brush with the sport. I was lucky enough to be able to spend time with some of the greatest riders in the world the night before at the pre-event party, as well as at TK, and I knew right away that the fixed gear scene was one which I could easily relate to on a personal level. I grew up as a skater and punk rocker, still love both, and I could see a big mixture of both styles in the SF fixed gear scene. SOFB - Who is your favourite rider to shoot with? Do you have one- or who made you "stoked on fixed bikes"

Photo: Garth Milan www.themediumcg.com

I would definitely say that Josh Boothby (SP?) is my favorite rider, both because of his personality, as well as his skills on a bike. I love seeing the boundaries of whatever sport I shoot being pushed, and Boothby definitely does that and more with his riding. To see him going for Flairs and things like that on a fixed gear bike is absolutely incredible, and people like him will make the sport evolve at an insanely quick pace.

77

SOFB - You race motocross, ride bikes yourself, how much dose this affect the way you look at the sport through your lens? I firmly believe that being a rider myself contributes greatly to what I am able to capture with my camera, especially with two-wheeled sports, as I have been doing these sports for nearly all of my life. Knowing and relating to the feelings and emotions that go hand-in-hand with whatever sport I am shooting offers huge advantages in capturing the best, most authentic, and most precisely timed moments. SOFB - Film or digital? I used to argue that film was better, but now I am 100% sold on digital unless you are going for a certain, specific look. Professionally speaking, film is much less reliable, much more costly, and just straight up harder to work with than digital. Do i miss hte film days, when it took much more skill, and a shot I absolutely loved came around a lot less often? Hell yes, but not enough to ake me want to carry a brick full of film through the airport after my next job! SOFB - whats your favourite time of daylight to shoot in? I would have to say late afternoon/ early evening, just before dusk, is my favorite time to shoot. The light is gorgeous then. Sunrise is also a magical time, but requires setting an alarm and getting up before dark, which is something I try to avoid if at all possible... Another advantage of a light bag is being mobile with easiness and comfort. There are days when I need to walk for miles, climb hills or simply ride a bike for a longer while...Â

SOFB - whats in your bag, all the gear you use for photoshoots, how heavy is it? It really depends on the shoot. I just went on a job where I carried nearly 300 pounds of gear through the airport last weekend, but this weekend I have about half of that with me on my current trip. The job dictates what I will need to bring, and it mostly hinges on what external lighting I foresee myself needing. SOFB - Minimal setup? Of course, my absolute minimal setup, and the one that I bring on vacations and personal trips, is my iPhone. But professionally speaking, I rarely if ever travel with less that two “pro” camera bodies, and four or five lenses that will cover from 14mm fisheye all the way to 300mm telephoto, along with memory cards, a flash, and my computer to download images afterwards. SOFB - Dream location to shoot this year? Honestly, I like shooting anywhere and everywhere, and can see the beauty in almost any place I travel to. My biggest wish list for a dream shoot is good weather, interesting backgrounds, and a subject (or subjects) that are just as into the shoot as I am. With these things, any shoot is a dream shoot! Any final thoughts you would like to add?

Still Pour came from a session under the Steal Bridge in Portland. It was raining horribly and we found escape under the bridge. We didn't have any money to go do anything and couldn't ride because of the rain. We for the first time were, STILL POUR 82

Evoc Camera Pack CP 26 This camera pack from Evoc is definitely one of the most-awaited . Evoc Is comfortable, stays in place well and has lots of usefull features. The 26 capacity means this is a medium backpack, but for its capacity looks a bit small at first.. but you would be surprised how much that backpack can take.....

At the front, there is a laptop bag, which is in our opinion the best feature of this bag, as it allowes you to carry your laptop safely and always reachable!

It opens and closes from the back, with two zippers, we found that quite usefull.

At the top there is a quickaccess section that can be reached from the front of the pack

We are happy to use this backpack while travelling and working, as it is a bit smaller than other bags we used and like the easy-access features and the style ! 93

BĂ–IKZMĂ–IND is a 30 minute documentary film about riding fixed gear bikes in beautiful Bristol. The film shows the diverse cross section of riders and asks why ride bikes with no gears in a city full of hills.

95

Shot in Bristol and made on a shoe string budget, the film shows what’s possible when like-minded people with a passion for two wheels come together. The soundtrack to BÖIKZMÖIND was curated by fixed gear rider Redg Weeks, who’s manager of the Bristol-based record label INVADA RECORDS, which was started by Fat Paul & Geoff Barrow of Portishead fame back in 2003.

This is the first time the film has been HD, with the DVD/Photo book package being released and selling out back in Easter 2012. Also included is a 20-minute behind-the-scenes Making Of edit, with some of the people behind the film speaking about what it took to make some of the key scenes.
