The journey to your perfect job may not be as difficult as you think. Not sure if you want to go to uni? Or not sure if you’ll have the grades? Turn to page 6 for information on whether an apprenticeship might be for you, or page 14 for alternative routes to university. Whether you want to jump right into the job market or start an apprenticeship, pages 18 – 24 will give you information that will help you make the right choice. Every day people are using apprenticeships as the path to their dream career. In addition to pledging to create three million apprenticeships in the next five years, the Government announced that the term “apprenticeship” will be legally protected – meaning that companies will have to provide their apprentices with at least a year’s training and other statutory requirements. You can ‘get in and go far’ with a higher or degree apprenticeship at some of Britain’s biggest and brightest companies. Over 240,000 workplaces employed an apprentice in 2013/14, including ‘blue chip’ British and international companies such as Cap Gemini, Ford, ITV, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Barclays and the BBC. With so many opportunities on offer you can find the apprenticeship that’s right for you. So, let your journey start here, the first step of your future career… Let’s go!

IS AN APPRENTICESHIP FOR YOU?

Thinking about an apprenticeship, but not sure if it’s for you? Here we answer some of the most common questions about apprenticeships. Do I qualify for an apprenticeship? Yes, if: đƫ You’re over 16. đƫ Living in England. đƫ Not in full-time education. How long does an apprenticeship last? đƫ The length of an apprenticeship is different for every job. Generally, it will last between one and five years. With most apprenticeships, it’s usual to spend a minimum of 30 hours a week working, with one day of training. Does it cost any money? đƫ No – you will earn a salary, which will grow as your skills do. So is it like a proper job? đƫ Yes. You will earn money while you learn a job role and gain experience and qualifications that will help you progress in your career. Does that mean I get holidays? đƫ Yes. Like every other employee in the UK, you’ll get at least 20 days of paid holiday, plus bank holidays. How much will I get paid? đƫ You will earn a minimum of £3.50 an hour, but your wage could be more, depending on the company. On average,

apprentices earn over £100,000 more over the course of their working life. What if I already have a job or have had a job? đƫ You can take on an apprenticeship at any time. You may even be able to become an apprentice at your place of work. Can I still go to university? đƫ Yes. After completing an apprenticeship, you could continue to train for a higher level apprenticeship, or you could go on to university. Some apprenticeships can even earn you UCAS points. How do I find an apprenticeship? đƫ You can find an apprenticeship through the National Apprenticeship Service, or apply directly through an employer’s website, through an apprenticeship provider like Step Ahead and GetMyFirstJob, or talk to your college or school careers adviser.

FAMOUS FORMER APPRENTICES You don’t have to go to university to have a successful career. Though it’s useful to work towards a degree during your apprenticeship, the people on this list prove that you can make it to the top, even without one… Talk show hosts Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey both dropped out of university and are now two of the highest earners in daytime television. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates both left Harvard to start their own companies, while Steve Jobs left Reed College to start Apple. All three men have been on Forbes list of the Richest People in the World. The late Walt Disney dropped out of high school at 16 yet he remains the person who has received more Academy Awards and nominations than any other in history.

Lord Alan Sugar, entrepreneur and wheelerdealer, left school at 16 to sell car parts from a van. He set

You might not recognise the name Ingvar Kamprad, but your house will probably have at least one piece from his iconic furniture brand: IKEA. Kamprad grew up on a farm in Sweden and started IKEA with


money his father gave him for doing well in high school when he was only 17. Roman Abramovich dropped out of college, worked as a street-trader, then mechanic, and sold imported rubber ducks from his flat in Moscow, before building his steel empire. He’s now worth $11.2 billion. Simon Cowell left school with just two O-levels (the equivalent of GCSEs) in English language and literature. After working several different jobs, he found a job in the mailroom of record label EMI, before making his way to being the worldfamous music and TV talent show celebrity he is today. You’d never know that tycoon, Richard

Branson, suffered with severe dyslexia and left school at 15 with just three O-levels (GCSEs). It wasn’t until he was in his 20s, that he began his Virgin mail-order record business, putting him on the path to his current £2.5 billion empire – now covering everything from music festivals to TV, a rail network and space travel.

Other famous names who didn’t go to uni: Supermarket chain Whole Foods CEO, John Mackey, spent seven years at the University of Texas and then dropped out before cofounding the health food store. Tumblr founder David Karp dropped out of school at 14.

One isn’t better than the other; it just depends what suits you, your ambitions and your future best Taking an apprenticeship doesn’t mean you have to forfeit university. And you don’t have to get ‘bad’ grades before you consider an apprenticeship as secnd best because they’re a great way to get yourself on a chosen career path. ROUTES TO UNI

If university is your long-term goal, there are several ways you can get there. A-Level results aren’t the be all and end all!

Many people don’t know that apart from A-levels, there’s a range of qualifications that can get you into higher education:

cover a wide-range of industries and are designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills that employers need.

Key Skills Qualifications (Levels 1-4) Key Skills Qualifications cover six areas in several levels such as communication and information communication technology. They can be studied as part of a full-time or part-time course at a school or a college in the day or evening, before moving on to an HND or degree.

Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are work-related, or vocational, higher education qualifications. They are Level 5 qualifications that focus on learning by doing, and give you tailored skills that you can use in a particular job. They are highly valued by employers.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) (Levels 1-5) An NVQ is a work-based qualification that allows the student to develop the appropriate skills and knowledge needed to do a job. You can do an NVQ while you’re in a full-time or part-time job. There are no age limits or entry requirements. BTEC qualifications and OCR Nationals (Levels 1-7) BTEC qualifications and OCR Nationals are work-related qualifications and can come as part of a technical certificate. They

Access to Higher Education Diploma The Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma is a qualification to prepare students for study at degree level. There are over one thousand courses available in many different industries. What about work experience? If you’re applying to do a Foundation degree course, you will find that relevant work experience is taken into account alongside any qualifications you have.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP First, you need to know what level of apprenticeship you’ll be doing INTERMEDIATE APPRENTICESHIPS Also called a Level 2 The Intermediate Apprenticeship is the basic Apprenticeship level. It’s for those who don’t have any formal qualifications, but employers might ask for one or two GCSEs or a basic numeracy and literacy test. A completed Intermediate Apprenticeship is the equivalent of five GCSEs at A*-C, or an NVQ Level 2, and a Key Skills or knowledge-based qualification such as a BTEC. Once completed, it will allow you entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIPS Also called a Level 3 The Advanced Apprenticeship is for those who have an Intermediate Apprenticeship or those with five GCSE passes at grade C or above. A completed Advanced Apprenticeship is equivalent to an NVQ Level 3 or two A-Level passes and will allow entry to a Higher Apprenticeship.

HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS Also called Levels 4 - 7 A Higher Apprenticeship is the highest level of apprenticeship and seen as the main alternative to university and higher education. Higher Apprenticeships are detailed and can be the equivalent of a foundation degree, but can progress as far as a Master’s degree. An NVQ Level 4 or a similar alternative is usually worked towards, with BTECs also being common.

There are a few different ways you can apply for an apprenticeship. With apprenticeships on the rise, there can be competition for places, so it pays to know the different ways you can apply.

If you know what industry you want to work in, then why not search for a position directly with the employer? This guide lists hundreds of employers who provide apprenticeships. Whether you’re looking for a position in business, science, technology, engineering or maths, communications and media, or government and the public sector, our guide has it all. Turn to the relevant section, visit the employer’s website and apply online. Remember, some companies will only hire at certain times of year, so it’s worth emailing them to ask when positions will become available.

ONLINE There are many different websites that can help you find the training you want, all offering hundreds of positions. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO MAKE A CV PORTFOLIO WEBSITE CV

A written CV is important, but visually dull: hard to stand out from the crowd. Sell yourself via email and the web with a modern online presence: your personal CV website Employers want to see what you’re about in the quickest and easiest way possible. Anything that saves them time, such as an online CV, gives you instant brownie points. But remember: bringing a paper copy CV and covering letter to an interview is still very important. If you don’t have a CV yet, then use the National Careers Service’s

There are plenty of simple web building platforms online, all free and user-friendly. Building your own website has never been easier, so crack on and get yourself noticed!

LEARNING LINKEDIN Have you heard of LinkedIn and wondered if it’s relevant to you? The answer is: yes, it is! LinkedIn is a social networking and careers site that has become an invaluable tool for over 200 million job hunters and executives across the world. Think of it as Facebook, but with your boss! LinkedIn has its own step-by-step wizard for you to get started with your profile. When you’ve done that, follow our top tips on how to make the most of it.

Write a good headline You get the opportunity to write a headline for your LinkedIn profile. This short description will appear below your name in search results and is the second piece of information people will see after your name. The key here is to sell yourself in as simple a way as possible. The headline needs to be catchy, but at the same time show the people browsing through the list why they should click on your profile.

Include A Picture Of Yourself It doesn’t need to be from a professional photoshoot, but a good, clear photograph of you is regarded as vital. Make sure it’s not a holiday photo or one with a group of friends. Save your fun photos for Facebook! Keep it as simple as possible with a plain background. Not only does a photo allow people to make a basic connection with you, but it also builds up a degree of trust.

Be Social Don’t forget that the site works like a social network. You have the opportunity to build a diverse catalogue of contacts from around the world. Search for people that you would be interested in working for, or who have well-established profiles. You can

also add existing contacts from your email address book if they have their own profile.

Be Informative You have many opportunities and different ways to sell yourself on LinkedIn. There are multiple categories and fields to complete. This may appear daunting and you probably won’t be able to fill all of them yet, but at every step of your career, you’ll be able to add another milestone to your growing online profile. If you’re particularly good at something, put it on your profile. Maybe you’ve built a website or have a blog that gets lots of hits. If you’ve won any awards, add them to your profile. If you volunteer for a cause, have completed a related course or speak a language, add it. Don’t be modest with your achievements!

Stay Current If you’ve taken the time to sign up to the website, added your CV, skills and any work experience you might have – then don’t let it fall into disarray. Your profile should stay up to date and ‘alive’. As long as you are doing something relevant to your chosen career, there is always something to add.

Get Involved It’s a cliché, but true, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Although LinkedIn won’t allow you to just start messaging Richard Branson or the head of Apple,


it does let you join a group and start a dialogue with anyone else in that group. Use this chance to share experiences and tips and build your contact base.

Connect To Your Business If you work for a well-respected multinational company, use its reputation to bolster your profile. Add a link to their site on your profile and say “I work here!”

If you work for a small business, show how you impact the workforce and help keep the place running. It doesn’t matter if you’re a minor cog in the works: tell people what you do and what experience you have gained. Stay connected, get linking and happy networking!

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET AN INTERVIEW

Congratulations! You’ve had that email or phone call asking you to attend an interview. Now, make sure you’re prepared… WHAT TO WEAR No matter what kind of job you’re going for, it’s important to look smart the first time you’re meeting a prospective employer. CLOTHES Invest in smart clothes that you can use again. Most suitable are a shirt, trousers, tie, skirt, dress and suit jacket. It’s easy to dress well, even on a budget.

SHOES Absolutely NO TRAINERS! Make sure your shoes are clean.

RESEARCH THE COMPANY Before you go to the interview, spend a little time on Google. Have a quick look for any recent news articles about the company. Have they had any great achievements in the last year? Is there an interesting client they have worked with or campaign they have worked on? What is their mission statement and what do they actually offer as a company?

Reread the job description It’s important to understand what the company is expecting of you. Rehearse your answers to any questions that might come up relating to it. That way, you won’t be caught out when you’re asked. Practice with a friend.


ON THE DAY Bring a paper copy of your CV and covering letter Even if your interviewer doesn’t use them, you will look organised and professional. BE EARLY! Google maps nearly always sends you the wrong way when have to be somewhere on time and you never know what kind of transport issues you might run into.

PHONE OFF! ...Or on silent! Don’t have it on the table and definitely don’t check it during the interview. Instagram, Facebook and iMessages can wait!

BODY LANGUAGE BE NICE! Smile at everyone. Be respectful. You want everyone you interact with to have a positive memory of you.

EYE CONTACT Maintain eye contact and sit up straight. Try not to touch your hair or face too much.

ALWAYS ANSWER No matter what your interviewer asks, always answer – even if you need a minute to think about it before you do. Here are some examples of tricky questions and how you could answer them:

SHAKE HANDS Shake hands with your interviewer when you meet them and also when you say goodbye. A firm handshake shows that you’re confident.

“WHY SHOULD I GIVE YOU THIS JOB?” Don’t panic. Remember the job description and list which of your past experiences or current skills could apply to the points listed in the description. Also explain to the interviewer how exciting you would find the job role and how keen you are to get the job.

To explain how Step Ahead could help you with an apprenticeship, let us tell you about one client we worked with, and how young people can earn while they learn Jake came to us before he got his exam results. He wanted help finding work, but wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. That’s normal for many young people. We discussed his interests and explained the different apprenticeships available at that time with a big client of ours, Essentia. They run what’s called the non-essential services at Guy’s and St. Thomas’s Hospital in London, and offer a number of different qualifications and apprenticeships in six or seven different departments - everything from Business Admin, Procurement, IT, Hotel Services, Painting and Decorating, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Call Centres and so on. Jake decided that working with Essentia would be a good move, so he applied for a place on a Sector Based Work Academy, which, in this case, was just one week long. It prepares candidates for work and assesses their different abilities, so they can find the right kind of work. Jake did a great job. he was helped to write his CV, and at the end of the course, having met the criteria, was automatically eligible for an interview with Essentia. Having passed his interview, Jake is now an apprentice painter and decorator with Essentia working at the hospital. The Trust said that the quality of the candidates, and their preparation, was so high that despite only having one place to fill they didn’t want to miss them, so they took on two apprentices. When you’re thinking about what to do when you leave school, an apprenticeship

is a great option, with qualifications available that can be equivalent to a Degree, if you want. You might be surprised to find out about some of the roles available too. For example, we have apprentices working at King’s College Hospital in A & E as an Assistant Clinical Technologists who do a variety of different jobs that carry real responsibility. They take blood from patients for testing, and work in operating theatres supporting the doctors and nurses. They also help with respiratory tests and in the ophthalmology department. We also have apprentices working in the simulation centre setting up training rooms and preparing equipment for doctors. Some arrange the transportation of patients to and from hospital – that’s part of a Customer Service Apprenticeship. There are so many different types of apprenticeships available – and we’ve only talked about the hospitals – we have museums, retail clients, offices, supermarkets, visitor attractions, in fact, too many to list here. One last thing to remember is that there are plenty of apprenticeships available for young women too – it’s not just for young men – as many people think. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT: FROM APPRENTICE TO SPECIALIST When Rebecca joined Nationwide as an apprentice in 2013, she knew career progression was important to her I applied for an apprenticeship at Nationwide after working in retail and realising it wasn’t quite right for me. When I joined, in April 2013, I was one of the first four apprentices Nationwide ever took on. I was the only one of my friends who chose the apprenticeship route – the others went straight to work or university. My friends were surprised at the time, but now completely understand why I chose this path. As a ‘Procurement Apprentice’ I was responsible for conducting due diligence on the third parties that the Marketing and Corporate Affairs departments wanted to work with. I was also studying for an NVQ in Business Administration, meaning I could earn while gaining another qualification. Although it’s not something I’d have picked during ‘careers day’ at school, I really enjoy my job. I’d dismissed Business Studies and Finance when I was younger as I didn’t enjoy maths, and I’d thought I wasn’t ‘clever’ enough for a career in Finance. I find Financial Services really interesting now, and manage the commercial lifecycle of third parties that Nationwide wishes to engage with. After 12 months, I’d completed my

40

apprenticeship, and I was promoted to Commercial Analyst. This meant I ran the entire end -toend process: tenders, supplier presentations, evaluation, drafting of contracts, negotiations and signing. Within these areas I’d often be involved with charities, photographers, PR, events and creative agencies, to name but a few. Since then, I’ve been promoted once again, this time to Commercial Specialist. Now, I focus on the Risk area of Nationwide, and I’m also studying for another professional qualification through the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply. There’s real friendship among the apprentices – we help and support each other. The best bit of advice I was given was from my Grandpa, he’s always told me “Never be afraid to go for the next job up!” and I’ve learnt that it is completely true: if you don’t try, then you’ll never know. After all, through hard work and being brave enough to try, I’ve gone from an apprentice with no knowledge or experience of commercial management to a Commercial Specialist within just two and half years.

REAL APPRENTICES I chose a School & College Leaver programme because… I liked the idea of working towards a professional qualification that would have a direct link to the work I’d do on a day-to-day basis. Also, I wanted to further my learning without incurring the financial cost of going to university. For me, PwC’s School & College Leaver programme was the perfect opportunity to achieve my career goals, with the added benefit of earning a salary. Advice I’d give for a smooth transition from school into work is to… 1) Take advantage of pre-joiner networking opportunities. The more familiar faces you recognise on your first day in the office, the less nervous you’ll be. 2) Ask any questions you may have, whether it’s to the recruitment team or your school careers adviser. My top tips for working straight after school as a School Leaver… 1) Ask questions. It’s the only way you’ll learn and expand your knowledge, whether it’s technical questions to help you do your job better, or practical things, like how to use a printer. People will be more than happy to help. 2) Get involved in different projects and committees because it’s the best way to expand your internal network and gives you exposure to different roles and activities that may be available. 3) Nobody knows how much work you have unless you tell them, so if you’re working at full capacity and you can’t take on any more

ENGINEERING IS NOT JUST FOR BOYS Emma Goulding, 23, from Stourbridge, West Midlands, was a Technical Apprentice at Siemens. She has always been interested in how and why things work, so when she found out she could learn and earn by doing an apprenticeship, she jumped at the opportunity. Emma tells us about her experiences and career so far... “I went on to study A Levels at college, which included maths and physics, but I decided I didn’t want to go to university after that. While I considered it, I thought that the employment options afterwards may be challenging, and I also wanted to start applying the knowledge I had learnt to real-life applications. This is when I discovered apprenticeships – for me, an apprenticeship was the ideal solution.” Apprenticeships allow you to gain practical and relevant experience, as well as training, with employers providing a structured programme of work and often a permanent role at the end of the scheme.” Keen to banish the engineering stereotypes of hard hats and greasy pipes and change the view that the industry is just for men, Emma explains that she really enjoyed her apprenticeship and would definitely recommend an engineering apprenticeship to other girls. “I think there is a stereotypical belief that all engineering work is dirty or just isn’t for women, but this isn’t the case. I worked with female engineers on a daily basis. “Engineering is really universal, and has a broad range of applications that I think women just simply aren’t aware of. I was surprised

when I first researched apprenticeships at just how varied and interesting the opportunities they offer can be.” Emma finished her three-year apprenticeship in November 2015 and has made the transition into a full-time Controls Engineer, securing a job straight away. Her apprenticeship provided numerous opportunities to progress both professionally and academically – she’s travelled to Africa, Canada and Germany for work-related business and she’s currently being sponsored by Siemens to undertake a Mechanical Engineering degree at university, where she studies on a part-time basis. From what she’s experienced, Emma believes there are excellent prospects for women in engineering and more is being done to encourage them; but challenging the stereotype is key. One way of doing this is to highlight the inspirational role models that do work in the industry to get girls – and young people in general – excited and inspired about the possibilities of an engineering career. Emma was shortlisted for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards 2015 and was announced winner of the IET’s

REAL APPRENTICES A strong desire to work in a customerorientated environment led Christel to join the 2014 intake of Pret’s School Leavers Programme. “The programme provides life skills you can’t learn from a book or a tutor: skills that prepare you for the real working world,” she explained. “It gives you the chance to grow, not just as a person, but also in experience; and it’s a great career stepping stone.” The programme gives young people the chance to learn about all aspects of the business, from food preparation to turning a profit and everything in between. “I’m getting everything I need to move onto the next step.” Kerri says: I think apprenticeships are brilliant. They’re a chance to take a leap into the real world. I’m dealing with real-life customers and situations all the time, answering calls and emails, checking deliveries, advising customers and interacting with them. It’s all about learning and moving forward, and I’m getting everything I need to move onto the next step. Parents say: Our perceptions of Apprenticeships have definitely changed since Kerri began hers. She has grown in confidence whilst working towards an NVQ 3, and she’s in stable employment. She’s getting a taste of what it’s like to be at work while still learning. And most of all she’s happy, too. So it gets a big thumbs-up from us. Facemediagroup say: Right now we have 14 staff and four of them are apprentices, one in each department. If you’re prepared to invest your time in apprentices, the rewards are huge. They don’t just generate more income, they become part of the team, with younger, fresher eyes and ears for us to learn from. It’s very satisfying to watch them grow over the time they’re with us.

HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS AT GCHQ What’s life like at GCHQ? We spoke to ‘Steve’ and ‘Melanie’, two second-year apprentices who came to Government Communications Head Quarters (GcHQ) straight from college

Why did they choose an apprenticeship over university? “Lots of people finish university with a qualification but can’t back it up with relevant experience,” says Steve. “Another reason is that you earn a salary,” adds Melanie. “The fact we get a Degree from a reputable university without paying fees is a win-win situation.” Crucially, they both wanted to develop the technical skills that are in such high demand from employers, and they liked the fact that the work isn’t about making a profit. GCHQ’s role is to help protect the UK against cyber attacks and terrorism. What’s does the apprenticeship involve? The academic component consists of a Foundation Degree and a Level 4 Diploma, with the option to convert to a BSc. Apprentices take the same classes you’d expect on any computer science course, from data structures and operating systems to telecommunications and cryptography. Learning is put into practice on a number of work placements. “It’s great to be integrated with the people who do this kind of work full-time. We pull together what we’ve learnt in the classroom and apply it to real problems,” says Steve.

How much responsibility do you get? Melanie was a Technical Analyst in her first placement. “You find yourself working on projects with real-world significance. We’re not just trying to gain marks at the end of a module.” The success of her project meant she got to present it to a GCHQ Director. “This opportunity is rare for someone just starting their career. It shows hard work really does get noticed here.” Then there’s the responsibility of being entrusted with access to top secret information at such a relatively young age. “It was daunting at first, but you quickly get used to it,” says Melanie. What’s next? Are their names actually Steve and Melanie? That’s something we can neither confirm nor deny; but we can confirm that on completing their apprenticeships, Steve and Melanie could be interviewed for a promotion into a full-time position at GCHQ, MI5, MI6 or other government departments. Training providers are specialist organisations that arrange apprentices’ training both in and out of the workplace. They partner with employers and make it easier for companies to attract and retain the best and brightest young minds in the country Lifetime Training (lifetimetraining.co.uk) is one of the UK’s biggest providers of apprenticeship training. Here, Chief Executive Alex Khan gives the inside track on apprenticeships. What do young people stand to gain by becoming apprentices? Doing an apprenticeship gives you fantastic first-hand knowledge of an industry, and provides the opportunity to determine whether the work you’re doing right now is something you really want to pursue as a career in years to come. Young people can learn while they earn with the support of a training provider who will always be on hand to guide them through any issues they may have. Working while gaining a qualification has many other benefits, from the potential for integrated learning to the opportunities you have for ongoing career development through progressive learning. It also allows your employer to assess your commitment and ability, which is a huge benefit in the long run. What kind of person do you think would be the ideal candidate for an apprenticeship? To be honest, there really is no such thing. All that’s needed to make a success of an

apprenticeship is passion, enthusiasm and plenty of drive. On average, how long do apprenticeships tend to last? You tend to spend a minimum of a year with the company, depending on the number of hours you’ve been contracted to work and your progress. In general, apprenticeship training lasts between one and four years. How can a candidate make the most of an apprenticeship? You’ll need to take the bull by the horns, get involved with the company, be enthusiastic and willing to learn. It’ll be hard work, but the end result – gaining great qualifications without taking on the burden of student debt – will make it all worthwhile. What sort of career progression can apprentices look forward to? It can be much more rapid than people might expect. An apprentice can initially take on a front-of-house role in a restaurant, pub or hotel, for example, then study for a 12-month qualification in hospitality and continue progressing until they end up managing the site. The more skills they develop and the more initiative they show, the better their chances of advancing quickly in their chosen career.
