1 Spring Fling 2018

Welcome to Spring Fling 2018! We are delighted to present another year of Scotland’s premier art and craft open studio event across Dumfries and Galloway. Eighty-six studios are taking part in this year’s event, offering everything from textiles, printmaking, jewellery and glass to painting, photography, willow, furniture, ceramics and sculpture. There is truly something for everyone of all tastes and budgets. This year we have a new partnership with the Ottersburn Gallery in Dumfries to showcase work by some of this year’s participants, focusing on the notion of Place. We are looking forward to seeing how this theme presents itself and hope you will join us. We are really pleased to present a range of workshops for our visitors on the week of, and after, Spring Fling. This is a great chance for you to get a more hands-on experience and learn directly from some of our artists and makers. You can then visit their studio, learn about their practice and maybe buy some original work over Spring Fling weekend.

of whooper swans and their family groups. We hope these additional Upland projects will enhance your visit around our region, showcase our members and the depth of Upland’s creative ambitions. Special thanks go to our SF2018 funders and supporters and all those who have helped make this year’s event possible: Dumfries and Galloway Council, the Barfil Trust, our dedicated board, staff, sponsors and our Friends. On behalf of everyone at Upland, we hope you enjoy Spring Fling Open Studios 2018. Joanna Macaulay Events & Exhibitions Manager Upland CIC

Alongside the open studios weekend, we have two Upland projects which we hope will form part of your Spring Fling experience. At Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries you will find Coast to Coast, a joint exhibition between Upland printmakers and the Icelandic Printmakers Association. If you don’t get to this exhibition in Dumfries you can see it in Reykjavik later in the year. Also, at WWT Caerlaverock you will find work by Angela Alexander-Lloyd as part of our Artful Migration residency which focuses on the relationship Image by Colin Hattersley (right)

Upland x Wigtown Book Festival Residency

Confluence Upland is delighted to continue working with the Wigtown Book Festival to present this two-part residency, enabling an artist to create work during the festival which is then presented at Spring Fling. In 2017 photographer Laura Hudson Mackay began a collaborative project supported by Upland, between photographers and storytellers based in Scotland and Morocco. The Confluence project looks to bridge cultures and highlight common links within the Arabian and Celtic storytelling traditions. Taking part in the project alongside Laura are Celtic storyteller Anne Errington, based in Dumfries and Galloway, photographer El Houssain Belabbes, storyteller Mehdi El Ghaly, both based in Marrakech, Morocco. During the Wigtown Book Festival 2017 the Confluence group continued their research, interacting with visitors and participants sharing traditional stories and gathering new ones. You can see the new work created as a result at Laura’s studio during the weekend (p19). Images: Laura Hudson Mackay (above) and Colin Hattersley (left)

Emerge Emerge is a nine month programme of mentoring with a bursary of ÂŁ1000 for young artists with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway. This year we have awarded two Emerge bursaries which will see each young artist paired up with an experienced Upland artist or maker. As well as creating new work and taking part in Spring Fling, the recipients will also benefit from Go & See trips, networking and training opportunities. Now in its seventh year, the programme is becoming a key part of the infrastructure for our next generation of artists and makers in Dumfries and Galloway. Through continued support by the Holywood Trust and the Archie Sutter Watt Trust, we are delighted to be able to support two young artists for 2018.

NEW STUDIO

I’m a printmaker using several different print media to portray wildlife (mainly birds) and coastal villages in Scotland. My linocuts, woodcuts and etchings are an attempt to capture the essence of the subjects which inspire me.

Currently, abstract work from a trip to Shetland is evolving into paintings and printmaking. I paint with acrylics, oils and other media, applied to a variety of surfaces. The processes of producing texture and exploring colour are the foundation of the work created.

What to expect: The studio contains two presses and a variety of other pieces of printmaking equipment, which I’ll be using to demonstrate over the weekend. In addition, there is a dedicated gallery space where framed and unframed work, books and cards will be on display.

What to expect: Visitors will see completed paintings, prints and work in progress and can try out printing pre-cut blocks, using a small, cast iron, bookbinding press. Outdoors, at the top of the terraced garden, there are panoramic views of the bay and the harbour below.

£3 - £450

Recommendation: The

View, The Harbour Green, Port William: A local charity run cafe which the lifeboat runs. Great place to fuel up on your Spring Fling tour whilst admiring the view. 16 Spring Fling 2018

I make refined thrown forms which are illustrated with imagery derived from objects found along the local shore line and in forests close by. The compositions reflect the way the wind and tide randomly assemble them, which can create a narrative open to many interpretations.

In all my work I’m taking special experiences of nature and searching for that moment of contact on the canvas where memory, intuition and imagination combine to create something expressive and new. My work ranges from the lovingly representational to organic abstract explorations.

What to expect: In my studio will be examples of work at different stages of production. I will be demonstrating the techniques used throughout the 3 days. In my gallery, set in an 18th century stone townhouse, there will be finished pieces available for purchase.

What to expect: Visitors will see the full range of my studio work, from sketches to grander pieces. The full range of acrylic paints, mediums, additives and tools I use will be on display. Paintings as well as works in progress, sketchbooks and photographs.

£7.50 - £500

Recommendation:

Whithorn Time Scape, Museum and Visitor Centre: Excellent place to visit with tea-room and amazing full-size replica Iron Age roundhouse, right in the middle of Whithorn.

10% off for single purchase over £50.

Directions: From Newton Stewart on A714, follow the signs for Whithorn. At Bladnoch follow the A746. My studio is in the centre of Whithorn, opposite the Central Cafe. Accessibility: Gallery is wheelchair accessible, but my studio is up 5 steps.

Art is how I make sense of the world. Drawing is fundamental, requiring sustained observation, creating deep connection with the subject. I ‘draw’ with pens, paint, words, sound, whatever media a project seems to demand. This is risky, but risk leads to discovery.

My work is inspired by the light, the colour and the forms of the Galloway landscape. I work outdoors whenever possible, gathering information in pastel and oil sketches, which I use indoors, stylising and inventing the finished paintings.

What to expect: ‘The Bladnoch Altarpiece’ - drawings, paintings and soundscape based on my two-month residency at the former Bladnoch Creamery, where people now make music, art, stoves, metalwork and car repairs instead of dairy products. Artwork explores the site today and industrial relics. Sparks will fly.

What to expect: In The Bookshop, Wigtown, the visitor can expect to see the process, starting with a selection of sketch books, and a range of finished paintings. In addition, there will be a range of giclee prints of some of these paintings developed from these sketches.

I make my prints by carving designs into blocks of wood and printing from them by hand using Japanese tools and techniques. Some images are black and white, whilst others are in full colour. I also use embossing, stencilling or gilding to enhance my designs.

My paintings are produced in the studio from a combination of sketches, photographs and imagination. This year, in addition to images of harbours, street scenes and landscapes, my work includes contemporary still life pieces, in vibrant oil colour.

What to expect: Carving tools, woodblocks, barens, papers, inks – they’re all here for you to look at and learn from! Come and see how all these elements play their part in the creation of my handpulled original prints, in both open and limited editions.

I make useful pots that are well crafted and a pleasure to use. Bowls, mugs, vases and jugs are the foundation of my practice and provide infinite possibilities in exploring clarity of form and functionality. The decoration is quietly evocative of local land and seascapes.

This year, in my endeavour to keep experimenting with glass, I am focusing on using glass powders in different ways. Still trying to achieve lightweight, ethereal work whilst retaining its strength and stability, I’m making freeform slumped wall based pieces using some Renaissance techniques.

What to expect: As well as my finished pots, expect to see demonstrations and examples of work in various stages of production.

What to expect: Back to the theme of birds; showing experiments, sketches, models and work from ‘Collect 2018’ in London. Connecting research on John James Audubon and time spent with scientists studying the impact of renewable energy on seabirds.

Things I love: well designed bits of engineering, making simple shapes into complex forms, frosted silver and the warmth of polished gold, attention to detail, working in fine silver, necklaces of lustrous pearls, making brooches, and a good play on the radio.

The human figure is still an important part of my work and using light through a window or door adds perspective and also a story element. I have started to venture into landscapes but always include signs of human presence eg. a boat, house, fence, gate.

What to expect: A cheery welcome! This is a rare opportunity to see a comprehensive collection of my work, with illustrations of special commissions, samples of techniques, tools, work in progress at a replica of my work space; basically showing how I do what I do.

What to expect: All my sketch books with works finished and unfinished, you can decide! Acrylic and oil paintings, monotypes and etchings. Also books by some of my favourite artists to browse through. I am always interested to hear your opinion and interpretation.

I have been developing the links between my field-based work, mostly in pastel, and my studio painting, invariably in oils, and getting very excited about the results from both! Exploring colour and bolder mark making in a more expressive approach has been fun.

Motivated by colour and relationships that occur when layering pigments, I express atmosphere in nature, creating aesthetic, emotional impressions.

For me there is a strong relationship between the process of making and the ways this leaves its evidence on an object. This work explores form, surface pattern and ceramic technique. Through practical investigation, contemporary objects are created which have a sense of ‘history’. What to expect: Find me in the new teaching and making space at Solway House. I am predominantly a landscape painter working in all media, occasionally mixed media. Mood and atmosphere is usually what attracts me to a subject which I often come across unexpectedly. I enjoy the process of creating my own interpretation and a piece which is unique.

I am a visual artist with a practice that spans from studio-based painting and drawing to public and socially-engaged work and collaboration. I aim to be relevant, inclusive and inspirational. With a strongly observational based practice and a love of the human figure.

I make jewellery inspired by heirloom treasures and the stories they tell. My Catkin Collection, which draws from an antique ring seen years ago, is made by layering hundreds of tiny disks to make a pattern reminiscent of the Spring catkin flower.

Working mainly with resin, I create pieces which combine a bold colour palette with pattern. Some pieces have magnets incorporated and others are reversible. Mismatch is also a strong element within my work.

What to expect: For the first time at Spring Fling I am delighted to be able to invite visitors into my own studio where they will see my workbench cluttered with tools, tiny works in progress and my pinboards full of inspiration.

The whole process for me begins in the great outdoors. Sometimes my work depicts unconsidered landscape - trees, gates, tracks. In themselves they may be uninspiring, but they rarely stand alone and are often elevated by weather and light conditions. Recreating that experience is the constant challenge.

Upland is a dynamic and ambitious artist and maker focused organisation. It provides a network for learning and sharing, a range of creative opportunities and support services to visual artists and creative practitioners. Spring Fling Open Studios is our leading celebratory annual event.

As the visual art and craft development organisation for Dumfries and Galloway, Upland is working to develop and promote high quality artistic and artisanal practice in the region. We aim to inspire and educate a wide range of audiences to participate and be supportive of visual arts and crafts.

Upland works with artists of all ages but has developed specific programmes which support those just beginning their careers and also allow young people to directly learn from established craft makers.

Modern Makers

Other Upland Projects

Modern Makers is a programme enabling a small group of young people from Dumfries and Galloway to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills. Developed from Modern Heritage Craft (2013-2015), the programme has seen young people learn skills in shoe making, furniture building, glass and jewellery.

Early Engagement

During 2016 six young people worked with Sam Booth (Echo Living) in his workshop near Castle Douglas to collaboratively design and build a bespoke bird hide for an RSPB reserve at the Crook of Baldoon, near Wigtown.

Upland is continuing to develop links with schools throughout Dumfries and Galloway by taking our artists and makers into the classroom. We are working with various schools to provide workshops across a range of media from drawing and painting, to textiles and ceramics. We are committed to creating quality opportunities to benefit and inspire young people by connecting them with established artists and makers.

Artist Residencies This year we have piloted a new artist residency as part of a wider residency programme being developed by Upland in partnership with Ginnie Wollaston of Moving Souls Dance, along with support from WWT Caerlaverock and the RSPB. The Artful Migration residency has enabled visual artist Angela Alexander-Lloyd to spend time on the reserve, observing and researching the whooper swans and their family groups. We are looking to develop the pilot into a wider three year programme to encourage and support artists creating work informed by wildlife, the natural world and the environment.

Modern Makers 2017. Photo by Colin Tennant.

In 2017, four young people gained hands-on learning with slipware potters Douglas Fitch and Hannah McAndrew. The group were introduced to various aspects of the slipware process, from the mixing of materials, the making and decorating of the pots, through to assisting in the exciting firing of the pieces in the wood kiln. This year a group of young people are working alongside artist Alex Rigg in the design and creation of costume for his new production ‘Orographic’ with his performance company Oceanallover. The participants will be taken through the concept, design, making and presentation of sculptural costume for use in live performance. We hope that by working in a group participants will gain new skills and confidence while at the same time being able to share ideas and build relationships through shared experience. Modern Makers 2018 is supported by The Holywood Trust and the William Grant Foundation.

Emerge Emerge is a nine-month programme of mentoring with a bursary of £1000 to create new work. This programme is aimed at emerging artists and makers with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway who intend to pursue a career as a professional artist. See p11 for information on this year’s Emerge.

Professional Development & Exhibitions Upland is developing a creative and professional development strand with the central purpose of nurturing the environment in which the visual artists and makers of Dumfries and Galloway work, providing opportunities and resources to develop their skills and creative practice. Alongside support and advice, we also offer exhibition opportunities for our members, giving artists and makers a platform to showcase their work outwith the region. We are also developing our Life Long Learning Resource in order to help connect organisations with artists and makers providing workshops. If you are interested in finding out about artists who run workshops and for information on all Upland activities visit: www.weareupland.com. Spring Fling 2018 77
