09 WOAW STORE No. 11 Gough St, Central This is definitely a passion project. WOAW stands for “World of Amazing Wonders”, and is inspired by my travels. The store features cool lifestyle stuff sourced from all over the globe – something I saw from Vancouver, interesting imports from Italy. This is my canteen. The owners, Lindsay and Matt are good friends of mine, and I’m always bringing clients here. Dinner at Yarbird is always fun, delicious, and sure to please - since my friends are always there to entertain. I’ve been on a health kick lately, so I’m into their brussel sprouts. But you’ve got to try the chicken oysters as well – do you know what chicken oysters are? They’re a must-try, so make sure you call in advance for some. • SPOT

In every city, there’s a club that runs the show. Dragon-i has been open for over ten years. In the nightlife industry, it’s hard to stay consistent and relevant for all that time, as this place has. I’ve seen everyone there – even Tom Cruise, once. •

We sell menswear, but not just menswear – it’s fresh gear that you’ve never even heard of yet. It’s that hard to find; we stock that extra fly fly shit. We got the name for the store from a movie that came out in the early nineties – Tupac’s in it. In the movie, “juice” refers to respect on the street. It’s a classic – you really should watch it. •

As an illustrator and Instagrammer, I like to use color and images to describe how I feel about Hong Kong. Right now, I’m seeing a greyblue Hong Kong – but I hope for it to change to a rosy-hued Hong Kong.

She’s a true fashionista of the social media age, sponsored by top brands inspired by her zany, colorful imagination (and perhaps her signature cotton candy- hued hair).

In places like Causeway Bay, it seems that there’s always a shiny new shopping mall popping up, identical to all the others. Haven Street lives up to its name: it’s a haven in the midst of Causeway Bay’s commercial feel. This is definitely not a mall. It’s more like a small neighborhood – a place where you can wander around a bunch of unique shops and find things like custom-made suits and novelty design products. •

Just like with most cool places in the city, this select shop is a bit hard to find – since it’s not located on the street level, you need to take a flight of stairs in a walkup to find it. They stock a variety of cool high street brands from America and Korea – KYE and Lazy Oaf are a few favorites of mine. •

Kellett Island, Causeway Bay Last year, I spent a total of over four months travelling abroad – mostly London, Paris, Tokyo – for various creative projects. I’m always happy to return to Hong Kong. This is a great place to see Hong Kong’s signature buildings; on the right, you can see the buildings in Quarry Bay, and on the left is the classic Central skyline. Being here always makes me nostalgic for my school years, when I’d buy a soda at a nearby 7-11 and watch the view for hours. •

This place serves a proper English high tea in an extremely girly setting, decorated all in pink, roses everywhere. It also has this quirky Alice in Wonderland feel – part of that may be because while you’re having your tea, you can also write a letter to your future self; they mail the letter back to you exactly one year later. •

I’d think I’d be considered as something of a frequent customer at this spot. They carry a well-curated selection of design books and art magazines. I especially love their graphic design and illustration books. There’s this corner next to the window where people can hang out and browse through the books for hours. Insider secret: between the bookshelves, there’s a foldable sofa that can pull down if you’re looking to get really comfortable. •

I think it's a misnomer that Hong Kong is a concrete jungle. Yes, it is in some places, but Hong Kong has so much wilderness, so many protected green-lands, and every amazing beach is only about an hour away… so there’s no excuse. I think what people know of Stanley is the Stanley Market, but I like to come and do SUP, short for stand-up paddle-boarding. I even bumped into one of the world’s top windsurfers here and totally fangirled her – she won one of Hong Kong’s only Olympic golds! •

One of my favorite things to do is to rent a sampan and cruise the outlying islands of Hong Kong. A sampan is a traditional fishing vessel and one of Hong Kong’s oldest forms of water transport. One of the best places to rent them is a total insider secret: at the tail end of the Aberdeen Fish Market. All the sampans there are available for rent, but you have to know what to say, and how to barter for a decent price. •
VISAGE ONE LG/F, Po Lung Building, 93 Hollywood Rd, Mei Lun Street Central There’s this place that operates as a barbershop by day, and then becomes a jazz club at night! It’s a tiny space in a very hard to find alley – which is why its still quite secretive – but you’ll see some of Hong Kong’s best jazz players congregate there. The jazz nights take place at random times, so you always have to call in and check. I love that you can sit on the stairwell going all the way up to the mezzanine, and everyone is just squeezed in there, sitting and soaking up the music. •

Even if you’re not into that niche permaculture lifestyle and just want to eat healthy, you should go to Grassroots Pantry for good eats. It’s in this area called Sai Ying Pun, where you can actually still live in lofts and big warehouses. I’ll probably end up moving over there at some point, as the area has developed a congregation of really healthy, delicious food – and good vibes. •

PALM BEACH TEEPEE VILLAGE Palm Beach, Cheung Sha, Lantau Island So I just thought you should know that there’s a teepee village on Lantau Island, and it is pretty much my preferred accommodation. You live in teepee tents, which is amazing, and the tents are even listed on Airbnb! It’s the coolest way to “glamp” in Hong Kong. •

For the best places to shoot HK, I love Bowen Road for HK island skyline shots. The view from the Grand Hyatt looking out towards Central is amazing and the sunset drops right behind IFC from that view – it's awesome. There's a few footbridges in Wan Chai near immigration Tower that will give you some great perspective street shots and even traffic light streak shots if you have a tripod. If you ever fly into Hong Kong Airport after a red eye flight and you're driving into HK Island at sunrise, the sky and sunrise when looking through the back window of a taxi is so rad. On the right day it can look so colourful like cotton candy. •

My food palate is definitely more Western; I eat a lot of American breakfasts and sandwiches. Recently I’ve been loving Sunday’s Grocery in Kennedy Town. It’s very casual – you don’t have to wait in a line or sit at a table. You can just grab a sandwich, a beer from the fridge, and have your meal out on the curb. The entire place is inspired by New York bodega style corner stores; something that’s been lacking in Hong Kong until now. • SPOT

I think that many people post-90s Hong Kongers, in my generation, including myself, are no longer interested in following the footsteps of our parents, working only for money instead of passion. We want to pursue our dreams, focus on living well, and place an emphasis on quality of life. It’s a focus on lifestyle, as opposed to accumulating wealth.

As it’s my friend’s shop, I find myself dropping by here all the time. It sells a variety of interesting, random knickknacks and gadgets. I’m in the habit of collecting small “props” like that – objects ranging from glasses, vintage luggage, other bits and bobs. In Sham Shui Po last year they had a sort of flea market where people brought all their vintage stuff out to sell, as shops were all closed down for Chinese New Year. •

Next to the cinematheque is Kubric, a café where you can have a coffee while leisurely browsing through CDs, film posters, and the like. I’m always finding inspiration there. The surrounding area is also pretty cool. There’s a wholesale fruit market nearby, and next to it is a Cantonese opera house called Yau Ma Tei Theatre. It’s truly a place where east meets west. •

TAI PO WATERFRONT PARK Dai Fat Street, Tai Po One of my favorite things to do is rediscovering traditional Hong Kong past-times that have been lost to our current generation. Flying kites is one of them. I go to Tai Po Waterfront Park – I just bought a kite at one of the little shops at the park entrance. You can fly kites for a while, and then have a picnic. There are some people in the park who are true professionals at kite-flying, and it’s always fun to spot some interesting custom-made kites. •

I love a good café latte, but many that I’ve tried in Hong Kong put too much milk in it, completely covering the flavor of the coffee. This place serves up a perfect latte – a properly proportioned combination of coffee and milk. •

G/F, No. 219 Kei Lung St, Sham Shui Po There’s this dai pai dong in Sham Shui Po with a metal roof and a green door that I always go to. They use a technique in which they pour tea into a long tea bag – it looks almost like a stocking – over and over to get a darker, stronger-tasting tea. Then the final touch: adding condensed milk for sweetness. •

The double yellow lines you see on the roads in Hong Kong essentially mean ‘don’t stop’. It’s a command to keep moving, and it says a lot about the nature of the city. It doesn’t stop, and therefore you have to keep moving to keep up with it. It takes guts and an open mindset to run in the city – but if you do, it’s a totally different way to see Hong Kong.

My friends own this spot in Sham Shui Po – a collection of good people trying to do good in the city. It’s part bike shop, part lifestyle store. Sometimes I just go there and just hang out – some guy will be jamming on the guitar or on the piano. You can even rent one of those old school Phoenix bikes and go for a ride. It’s a vibe that I find very refreshing; it reminds me of my college days when a bunch of friends would just hang out and go for bike rides. •

When I want to get away from the city, you’ll find me on this road called Sha Tin Au Pass. It’s this old-school road that used to take people to the New Territories through the mountains. Everyone goes up to the Peak to get the view of Hong Kong – but me, being a Kowloon guy, I go up that road on a clear night for this ridiculously amazing view of the city from the Kowloon side. •

THE CITY OF HONG KONG / CLASSIC HARBOUR RUNNERS ROUTE Star Ferry Pier, Tsim Sha Tsui

I’ve run a lot of Hong Kong just on my own two feet, and I think running is the best way to see the city. Each section has a different vibe; you can even feel the different types of paving on the streets. Hong Kong is my playground – that’s why the tag for Harbour Runners is #werunourcity. I’d recommend one of our iconic Harbour Runner routes as a good way to ease yourself into running Hong Kong. It’s flat pretty much the whole way, which makes it easy for a novice. The route starts from Star Ferry on the Kowloon side, hooks east, and leads all the way around to Hong Kong Island. It’s about an 8 km round trip. •

My architectural background finally shows through: this hostel is converted from one of the last standing versions of Hong Kong’s public housing. In order to preserve it, they turned it into a hostel. Hong Kong has a short and intense history with public housing. The bottom two floors were turned into a history museum, and what’s interesting is that some of the apartments have actually been recreated with original furniture sourced from former residents, so you can experience what it was like to live there in the building’s heyday. It’s an honest way to see how Hong Kong has transformed, away from all the glitz and finance. •

This city is all about foodie culture, but to best honest, I’m not much of a foodie. For me, the beautiful thing about food is its ability to bring back childhood memories. Places like this still serve up dishes that take me right back to when I was five years old: fish balls, pigs skin all done up soft. The flavors might not be for everyone, but I grew up eating these dishes. Plus, it’s dirt cheap; you can spend thirty Hong Kong dollars and feast like a king. •
