Crestwood wins AAA National Capital Bowl

Mustangs win the AAA Championship in a nail biter over the Frontenac Falcons

Submitted by Crestwood Football The Crestwood Mustangs won the AAA National Capital Bowl for the fourth time in the program’s history. Last season, the Mustangs won the AA National Capital Bowl. The road to the National Capital

Bowl started when the Mustangs edged the Adam Scott Lions 24 – 17 to win the City Championship. Following the City Championships, the Mustangs advanced to COSSA. The Mustangs were impressive in a 37 – 6 domination of the Moira Trojans from Belleville. This victory was the 11th COSSA victory in 13 years for Crestwood! The National Capital Bowl game pitted the Mustangs against the

Frontenac Falcons, a team that Crestwood had failed to beat in four previous attempts. The game was a back-and-forth contest with the lead changing hands on several occasions. The championship came down to the final play, with Frontenac needing a 30-yard field goal to win the game. The kick hit the upright and the ball fell back onto the playing field, leaving Crestwood victorious with a 19 – 18 win and the AAA Championship!

Logan DeNoble: Proving hard work pays off Photos by Peterborough Petes/OHL Media Inc.

For some hockey players, it seems to come easy. They often have a high profile at a young age and seem to be at the top of prospect lists their whole minor hockey lives. For others, the road is full of turns and obstacles. Occasionally, we see a player who takes these challenges head-on and proves that hard work has its rewards — Peterborough’s Logan DeNoble is one of those athletes. Born to Steve and Jodi in Peterborough, Logan comes from a long line of hockey players and great athletes. His father, Steve, played for the Trentway-Wagar Jr B team and his uncle, Jeff, spent some time with the OHL Petes. Logan’s grandfather, Ron Chittick, and great uncle, Perry Chittick, also played for the Petes. Logan and his younger brothers, Owen and Chase, continued the family tradition and played Minor Petes AAA hockey. Known for his work ethic and

high hockey-IQ, Logan entered the OHL Draft following his minor midget year in Peterborough. The Petes drafted him in the 13th round, 242nd overall. Logan was far from disappointed in going in the later rounds. Logan said, “I was just happy to be drafted. I knew my abilities from the start. A lot of guys, who were later picks, will tell you it’s not where you get picked; it’s about the opportunity and what you do with that opportunity.” Logan credits his minor Petes AAA coaches with helping him become the player he is today, starting with his father. “My Dad was a great coach. He taught me a lot at the rink and away from the rink.” But there were others as well, Logan continued, “I think of guys like Scott Brodie and all the great assistant coaches we had who maybe don’t get as much credit sometimes. I never had a bad year playing minor hockey in Peterborough, and I owe a lot of my success to all the coaches I had.”

sportsprofiles To say the Petes’ late round pick has paid off is a massive understatement. Following a breakout 20-goal campaign last year, Logan already had 27 goals as of January 21, putting him on a remarkable 42-goal pace for this season. He has this to say regarding his goal output, “Most of them are coming from in and around the net. It’s part of my game; I just try and go to the dirty areas and I’ve been rewarded so far. I just have to keep going there.” Following the team’s additions made at the trade deadline, Logan is optimistic, “The Eastern Conference is definitely up for grabs. Our goal is to win it. With the new guys brought in, and the guys here already, we feel like we have great depth and can make a run.” If this team mirrors Logan’s work ethic, it could be a fun spring for the Peterborough Petes.

Logan’s advice to young athletes: •

• •

“My name never appeared on any of the so-called scouting sites; that doesn’t mean you can’t make it.” “Make the most of your opportunities.” “Keep working hard; work on your game.

Results from the Liftlock Tournament As the annual Liftlock Atom Hockey tournament came to a close for 2017, the committee was already busy preparing for its 60th anniversary coming in 2018. This year, as usual, hundreds of volunteers helped out ensuring the 59th edition went off without a hitch. The tournament, held Thursday, January 12 through Sunday the 15th, featured 1,800 players participating on 116 teams. They started the festivities with a skills competition for teams from the Peterborough House League and surrounding area on Wednesday, January 11 at the Evinrude Centre. Remarkably, this non-profit tournament has donated a portion of the revenue to a charity chosen to give it a financial boost. This year’s chosen recipient organization was Victim Services for Peterborough and Northumberland. The Vice Chair of the Tournament, Wayne Blackburn, nominated this charity just before his sudden passing on August 24. Skills Competition - 1st place results Thomas Mahon – Kawartha Coyotes (speed skating), Connor Swawn – Lindsay Teal (target shooting), Nolan Olauson – Apsley Flames (shootout), Keegan Perks – Apsley Flames (stick handling) and Everett Leeder – Manvers Mustangs (goaltending).

TASS football program is alive and well Article and photo by Peterborough SportsXpress When you think of high school football in Peterborough, you tend to defer to the powerhouse teams from Adam Scott and Crestwood. On a beautiful afternoon this past November, that changed in Peterborough. Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (TASS), the one on the other side of the river, (some would even say the “right side of the river”), won the Central Ontario Secondary School Association (COSSA) Junior High School football championship. It has been 43 years since their last junior championship and that certainly makes this a big deal, especially for co-coaches Jeff Challice and Viktor Kulla. Kulla and Challice were six years old the last time the Junior TASS Griffins won! The coaches played together as high school friends for Adam Scott in the mid-80s and won COSSA for the senior Lions team. Now many, many years later, they are the teachers — the coaches — who helped guide this Griffins’ team to its long awaited championship. The Griffins were considered the underdogs up against Centennial High School from Belleville. The Centennial team had a bigger bench of 56 players

biter, 14 –13. So what’s next for the Griffins? Challice responded, “Now we move on to play a team from the Durham school district and then hopefully on to the Metro Bowl.” After a storybook season, the Griffins, who had defeated Pickering in the quarterfinal, eventually lost in their final game of the season. The Griffins came out on the short end (25 – 14) in a hard-fought game to Toronto’s Richview Saints in the Metro Bowl semifinal at St. Michael’s College stadium. It’s the furthest a TASS football team has ever gone since the creation of bowl games beyond COSSA. For now, after going 10 – 1 in their season, the Griffins have the City and COSSA Junior Football Championship on the right side of the river!

and were supposed to be far more superior on the offensive side of the ball. When asked, “What did you do to prepare your 26 boys for this big game today,” Coach Challice replied, “I felt we came into today’s game very prepared. All year we have worked very hard at practice, doing the simple things over and over; never trying to complicate the plays, and today we did it the right way and it worked out very well for us.” Once underway, the game’s outcome was never really in doubt. The Griffins defeated the Centennial Chargers 53 – 17 in the AAA bowl game. Quarterback Kal Sager was at his very best from the first play of the game, handing the ball off to Jake Zajac for a huge run for his first of three touchdowns of the day. To get to this COSSA championship, TASS had defeated the Adam Scott Lions the week before in a fourth-quarter nail-

Daniel Challice commits to the Queen’s Gaels

Daniel Challice will be suiting up for the Queen’s Gaels Football team. On January 19, Challice officially signed his Letter of Intent at his current school, Adam Scott CVI. Queen’s Head Coach Pat Sheahan was in attendance to get Daniel’s name on the dotted line. Challice was thrilled to commit to the Gaels. “Queen’s has a great football program and they offered the field of study I wanted, so I was very excited to get their offer,” said Challice. To have this event in Peterborough was special to Challice as he noted,

“It’s humbling to know I came from a small town and a school with amazing athletes. We had a great team and great coaches.” Also in attendance were Daniel’s Adam Scott coaches and his parents Jeff and Nathalie. Daniel added, “My parents were always behind me. They are the reason I have so many options and opportunities. The fact they are here while I get to sign my letter of intent is a pretty good feeling. I’m happy for myself but also for them.” The recruitment process can take

some time but Coach Sheahan identified Challice as a recruiting target some time ago. Sheahan said, “I first saw him play last year at the OFSSA finals. It was a tough, hard fought game and the Adam Scott team acquitted themselves very well. He caught my eye with good speed and good athleticism. And the more you investigate, the better it is. He is also a very good student. It’s obvious that he is one of those one or two kids on each high school team that will go on to play at the university level — and we are glad it’s Queen’s.” Sheahan was thrilled to come to Adam Scott for the official signing. He said, “This is a great moment in an athlete’s career and great for his family. It also gives us a chance to pay homage to the coaches who help these players develop.” Challice intends to enroll in the Concurrent Education program while attending Queen’s and playing for the Gaels.

Already this year, our provincial team has successfully qualified one athlete to compete as a member of Team Ontario in a huge international meet in Las Vegas, Nevada. Next on our calendar, in a couple of month’s time, the club will host its second annual Invitational Competition for athletes from around the province. The hosting of a Provincial Compulsory Qualifying Competition involves numerous parent volunteers and club staff over several months of preparation. This competition, scheduled for March

KGC encourages the public to come and see what its athletes have accomplished. The competition will be open to the public for an admission fee. The club will have 23 athletes competing and the coaches have high expectations of success for them. Kawartha Gymnastics Club is a notfor-profit organization that provides a variety of classes for children of all ages including, trampoline, acro, gymnastics, birthday parties, movie nights, camps, and private lessons.

4 and 5, is part of a series of meets that athletes from all over Ontario attend in hopes of achieving a spot at the Provincial Championships in June. The event will feature over 250 athletes over the two days. “We had such a great time hosting last year, that we decided to try it again,” says Kawartha’s Head Coach Becky Ansell. (KGC hosted its first competition of this magnitude last year with great success.) “The parent support was outstanding! We also had a lot of coaches from the club come out and volunteer their time. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

HISTORY OF THE UNDER THE LOCK TOURNAMENT In August of 2009, David Smith was enjoying a round of golf with some friends at the Liftlock Golf and Country Club across the street from Lock 21. As the director of player development for the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League, he was lamenting to the rest of his foursome that there just wasn’t enough ice time available for the Roster Select Division to host a tournament in Peterborough for the coming hockey season. While standing in the parking lot putting his golf clubs into the back of his car, he looked over at the canal and thought to himself, “The kids skate on the canal all winter. The city maintains it to make sure it’s safe; that would make an awesome venue to have a tournament.” With that idea, the wheels were set in motion to create the most unique hockey experience for kids. After discussions with representatives from Parks Canada, The City of Peterborough, The Ministry of Natural Resource, the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, the Ontario Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada,

the Under the Lock Hockey Tournament was born. There were many challenges to overcome that first year. Building the rinks, getting time clocks and nets, setting up change rooms, arranging for lights and washroom facilities, getting players down to the ice safely, and cleaning the ice are all things that we just take for granted in an arena but had to be addressed on the canal. Some ideas worked well and are still used today, but other ideas were much better in concept than in reality. As it turns out, a lawn tractor with water drums mounted on each side with an outrigger system to flood the ice and a giant squeegee mounted on it to clear snow isn’t as effective a homemade Zamboni as you might think. The 16 teams that took part in the first year were just the beginning of what was to come. The tournament grew from two rinks and 16 teams to four rinks and 32 teams the second year. In year three, we were at six rinks and 50 teams. The fourth year of the tournament was the pinnacle

of success as 65 teams between tyke and midget participated. Teams from Quebec, Ontario and New York State got the opportunity to be part of the CBC Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada broadcast. Fifty-four NHL alumni as well as the holy grail of hockey, the Stanley Cup, were at the canal that weekend. Now in its ninth season, the focus still remains on providing an experience for the kids that they will never be able to get anywhere else. Maintaining that focus should allow this tournament to continue to be a vibrant experience for everyone involved and, most importantly, provide life-long memories for close to 1,000 young hockey players each year.

Record success for Ice Kats at home tournament

The Peterborough Ice Kats had a record haul at their 36th Annual Ice Kat Tournament; it was a banner weekend! With 90 teams competing for titles in divisions from novice to senior, a record-setting eight Peterborough Girls Hockey Association (PGHA) teams made it to their tournament finals. Five of the teams won gold and three teams won silver medals. This is the most successful result for the PGHA in the history of the tournament which involved all local arenas including Douro and Warsaw. “We are thrilled with how well our teams did at our home tournament.

A lot of work goes into hosting and playing a tournament of this magnitude. We are proud of all our teams who competed this weekend,” said Carole Wagner, PGHA President.

More information on the PGHA The PGHA is one of the longest consecutively running female hockey associations. It offers a full houseleague program and 14 rep teams

Our All-time Peterborough Petes Team Peterborough Petes All Star Team Picks: SportsXpress Vs Pete Dalliday Article by Peterborough SportsXpress, photos by OHL Media

The defence:

When we were asked to put together an “All-time Team”, we knew there would be many tough decisions to be made. The goal was to assemble the best lineup from the great history of the Peterborough Petes — not just a list of great players, but an actual team. So, we looked for balance in the lines, grit and each player’s accomplishments as a Pete. Some players went on to great success post Petes but their numbers as Petes were a little sub-par. Here we go; let the debate begin!

Larry Murphy & Chris Pronger, Brent Tully & Shawn Evans, Matt Carkner & Mike Martone, Colin Campbell The competition for defensive spots was fierce and highly debated but our top pair was clear — two great junior players who went on to be hall of famers. Tully brought leadership and Evans, often overlooked, tallied 256 points in his Petes’ career. We wanted our defence to be full of great leaders and grit; Martone, Carkner and Campbell fit that bill.

The coach, Dick Todd:

The tenders:

There have been a slew of great coaches in Petes’ history, but Todd made it to the third playoff round at least 11 times, plus five finals and three OHL Championships. Even more impressively, Dick Todd never missed the playoffs — ever — and that’s good enough for us!

Ron Tugnutt and Joey MacDonald Choosing the goalies was our most hotly contested decision. The problem with looking at all-time stats is that goalie statistics are influenced greatly by the era in which they play. There is no doubt that Kay Whitmore, Trevor Cann, et al were great Petes but we can only pick two. We went with two “gamers” — two guys who brought it

Up front: Forwards (LW/C/RW) Line 1: Rick McLeish, Daniel Ryder, Cameron Mann. Line 2: Mike Ricci, Mike Harding, Jason Dawe. Line 3: Mickey Redmond, Doug Jarvis, Scott Barney. Line 4: Kris King, Keith Acton, Doug Evans This forward group brings scoring (the first two lines tallied 1,740 points as Petes), smarts and toughness. It includes great offence players and perhaps the most clutch Pete ever, Cameron Mann. The line of Redmond, Jarvis and Barney could be the best line in many other organizations. Because we wanted to put a true team together, our fourth line would be the toughest in the league with a combined 1,557 penalty-minutes but proved they could play too amassing 784 points as Petes.

Honourable mentions: Craig Ramsey, Jamie Tardiff, Mark Flood, Trevor Hendrix and Andrew D’Agostini.

Pete Dalliday’s All-underrated Petes Team better Petes, some who put up bigger numbers than my team below, but keep in mind that this team consists of the most underrated Petes team of all time.

teams. DeNoble, if he plays as an overage, could become just the 20th Pete to score 100 or more career goals. I give an honourable mention to Robert Franz who had 138 points and over 455 penalty minutes. Mike Williams could be on my team any day; so could big winger Dave Roche.

The coach: Since we picked Dick Todd to head our All-time Team, and Gary Green is often recognized as the only coach to lead the Petes to Memorial Cup Championship, I’m going with Rick Allain. That’s right, perhaps a bit of a surprise but Allain had 191 wins as a Petes coach and that was before the shoot-out. If you take just half of his 38 ties and make them into victories, he’d have the equivalent of well over 200 wins behind the Petes bench. I have not seen him since he was fired, but he deserves some credit. Article by Pete Dalliday, photos by OHL Media Unlike the SXP guys, my team is made up of players who, for the most part, didn’t go on to big NHL careers. Some did, but many never played in a single NHL game despite having great careers with the Petes. There were

The defence: Greg Theberge, Dustin Wood, Jamie Pegg, Geordie Kinnear, John Vanderburg, Jim Wiemer You talk to anyone that played for the Petes in the late 90s or early 2000s, including former NHL player Kurtis Foster, and they will agree that Dustin Wood is one of the hardest working guys they ever played with. On a team full of stars, Kinnear quietly went about leading the 1993 Petes team to the Memorial Cup final. If you ask Jeff Twohey who was one of the best leaders he ever coached, Kinnear’s name would near the top, if not on top, of his list. Ron Stackhouse wouldn’t look out of place on this blue line corps either.

Up front: My list consists of 12 forwards, regardless of the position they played. Anyway, they were so talented that they probably played two or three different positions at some point. Forwards: Ross Wilson, Jim JJ Johnston, Bob Errey, Doug Gibson, Troy Stephens, Joe Hawley, Mark Freer, Rob Giffin, Tony Cassolato, Jamie Tardif, Marc Teevens, Logan DeNoble

The tenders: David Currie and Andrew Verner His name never seems to come up, but David Currie had nine shutouts as a Pete including six in the 2002/03 season. Verner won 63 games, tied 13 and only had 30 losses between the Petes pipes in the early 90s. He also had six assists! Honorable mention goes to Zak Bierk who was, perhaps, the most fun to watch and a shout out to Todd Bojcun who had over 50 wins and six shutouts as a Pete. Did I miss anyone? I’m pretty sure I probably did as the Petes have been playing for over 60 years. So many players could have made my list! Narrowing it down to 20 players and one coach was more difficult than I thought. Let me know how I did: @petedalliday on twitter.

Many of these players never suited up in the NHL but they sure did leave their mark with the Petes. If heart and soul were statistics, these guys would have been Hall of Famers. Known more for his lacrosse skills, in just 100 games as a Pete, JJ Johnston had 116 points playing on a defence-first, Roger Neilson coached

Peterborough Petes profile — new faces join the Petes

The 2016 – 17 OHL has been refreshing for Petes fans who have enjoyed exceptional play on the ice all season. The 10-game winning streak that the mighty maroon and white put together to complete a perfect month of December was a highlight of the first half, and set the team up for some excitement in January. Fans weren’t just intrigued by the first weeks of January because the team was heating up on the ice though. Instead, it was the work of Petes General Manager Michael Oke that had water cooler experts extolling the longest continuously operating team in the OHL. With the 2017 edition of the annual trade deadline set for January 10, Oke had been busy compiling scouting reports and working the phones with a clear end-goal: making a deep run in the 2017 playoffs while building a team culture and framework that will allow for long-term success as well. “Many fans think that the trade deadline is a one-day process that’s just a one-on-one conversation with another GM,” commented the Petes’ boss. “There are countless factors to consider though, including ensuring that new destinations will be the right fit on and off the ice for all young men involved.” These comments rang true as the Petes made their first move of the trade season, which saw second-year defenceman Nick Grima dealt, along with six picks in upcoming OHL Priority Selections, to the Sarnia Sting. Oke reflected that, “It’s never easy to trade a young man like Nick who is developing into a good player, leader, and member of our community. We feel, though, that the two players we were

24

Peterborough.SportsXpress.ca

able to bring to Peterborough were well worth what we gave up.” That return included two veterans: forward Nikita Korostelev and defenceman Alex Black. Korostelev joined the Petes as one of the league’s most dynamic, high-scoring forwards, who also enjoys playing a physical game. He had at least a point in each of his first six games with the Petes, while Black has been steady as can be on the back-end, helping solidify an already strong defensive unit. On January 9, Oke further bolstered the lineup by adding Chris Paquette from the Niagara IceDogs. Paquette was a player coveted by all for his combination of size, speed, two-way play, and his experience winning an Eastern Conference championship with the IceDogs last season. “We’ve had discussions about Chris before, and it was never a fit, but it was a fit this time. We’re really excited by his work ethic and ability to play a 200foot game,” said Oke. A lot of considerations need to be made when making a deal, including balancing the needs of the team with what’s best for the players — on the ice, in the community, and at school — and their families, advisors, billets, and more. Also, the team brass need to keep the future in mind, which is why young forward C.J. Clarke was dealt to the Flint Firebirds in exchange for two future draft picks. Oke reminds fans that the trade process is not as simple as it looks. “This isn’t fantasy hockey.” By adding high-calibre players that can contribute for several seasons to come, without sacrificing the long-term viability of the team, the 2016 – 17 OHL season in Peterborough may actually become the stuff of fantasy after all. To cheer on Nikita, Alex, Chris, and the rest of the Peterborough Petes, check out the many ticket options at GoPetesGo.com or on the free Petes Mobile App for iPhone or Android.

Six medals for KTSC athletes to start the season

Kawartha Trent Synchro Club’s (KTSC) competitive athletes had a strong showing during their first competitions of the season. Saturday, January 14 they competed in the Lisa Alexander Figures Competition, a qualifying meet for their Regionals. Ora Meade got things off to a good start by winning the trophy for 15-year-olds and earning the bronze medal in the figure category for ages 13 through 15. “Trophies are awarded to the top 13-year-old, 14-year-old and 15-year-old athletes in this category. This is Ora’s second year in a row winning her age trophy,” said Coach Dani Smith. “It is a great way for the club to start off the year!” Myah Sandiland also had outstanding results and was rewarded with the sixth-place ribbon. Other results (for ages 13 through 15): Caitie O’Connor (12th place), Jayden Thomas and Danica Deck (tied for 15th), Morgan Crowley (17th), Grace Blewett (21st), Samantha Shewell (22nd), Meghan Graham (23rd) and Kaelyn Stoyles (29th). The strong performance continued with two of our swimmers placing in the top six in the figure category for ages 16 to 20. Ally Sandiland brought home the bronze medal and Sabrina Adam placed fifth. Allison Adam finished 10th and Jess Pearcy came in 14th. KTSC entered four athletes in the

figure category for ages 11 and 11: Taylor Tompkins came 20th, Ella Dummitt (27th), Katie Miske (33rd) and Paige Lemire (38th). The club had five athletes entered in the 10 & Under figure category: Kyrsten White finished 14th, Layla Sandiland (15th), Adeline McCully (16th), Brynne Kyle (17th) and Lauren Chambers finished 21st. “This is the first time any of these girls have competed in the provincial stream. They worked hard to prepare for this meet, and I am proud with how far they have come so far,” Coach Mattia Fonzo noted. The success continued the following day with KTSC’s five routines entered in the GO Capital Invitational routine competition. Danica Deck and Grace Blewett brought home gold for their duet performance in the (ages 13 to 15) duet event. “The first competition is a great time to see how the routine looks in a bigger pool and to see how they will do under the pressure,” remarked Coach Katy Eldridge “The girls had a great swim!” Taylor Tompkins brought home a silver medal in her swimming debut in a solo event. “The (11–12) solo competition has some tough competition,” said coach Sarah Birkbeck. “It was great to see how naturally Taylor swan her routine! I am excited for the rest of the season.” In the team routine events, the 16–20s finished with the silver medal. Swimmers included Caitie O’Connor, Jessica Pearcy, Ally Sandiland, Sabrina Adam, Samantha Shewell, Ora Meade and Allison Adam. Dani Smith and Sarah Birkbeck coach the team. The 13–15 team also brought home

silver. Swimmers involved were Kaelyn Stoyles, Myah Sandiland, Danica Deck, Grace Blewett, Jayden Thomas, Morgan Crowley and Meghan Graham. Coaches are Holly Dyer and Sarah Birkbeck. The 11–12 team finished off the weekend with a strong sixth-place finish with swimmers Ella Dummitt, Katie Miske, Paige Lemire and Taylor Tompkins. “This is a great result for this small team,” said Coach Katy Eldridge. “This is a great time in the season to have a competition and get feedback from the judges. I received a lot of comments about how strong our club is becoming. I am really proud of how hard the girls have worked so far, and am excited to make changes based on the feedback and show up even stronger at the next competition,” summarized Head Coach Dani Smith. KTSC’s provincial stream athletes will next compete at their East Regional competition in March.

Are you fast enough?

If you line your team up on the goal line and have a race to the centre line, who wins? Likely not the goalie, but odds are that most of the players on your team get there at about the same time. Your fastest players might be a step or two ahead but they won’t win the race by more than a few feet. The straight-ahead speed of most players playing on the same team in the female game is pretty even. This means that the linear speed of most players in the same age group will likely be pretty even too. So, how do you separate yourself from your competition when it comes to speed? You do it with your east-west skating. While most players competing at the same level are similarly fast going north-south, the best players are the ones winning the east-west races.

How many times have you seen your defence skate straight up the wall on the breakout right into pressure, or your winger pick up a breakout pass and turn up the boards only to run straight into the other team’s defence? It happens all the time. If your winger and attacking defence player had the proper skating, game awareness and puck protection skills in place, those turnovers along the boards wouldn’t happen. They could make a sharp cut towards the middle of the ice, away from pressure, and have many more options of what to do with the puck. The first thing I teach players when working on their east-west game is the lateral cut. Training starts with getting players comfortable with the concept of skating with their toes pointing towards the side boards instead of north-south. Picture a forward skating down the boards against a defenceman, one-onone. Instead of trying to beat that D wide with linear speed, that forward can skate east-west by cutting in towards the middle and shielding the puck from the defender. This creates a lane to the middle of the ice for the forward with the puck in a safe position. Not only is this east-west action challenging for the D to defend, it’s also very hard for the goalie to adjust to a shooter skating east-west

across the front of the net. In addition to the simple lateral cut, we also stress the importance of using the heel-to-heel cut, sometimes called the Crosby move. This move requires the puck carrier to open up her feet into a heel-to-heel position while turning her back to the defender. This creates maximum separation between the attacker and defender and also allows the puck carrier to cut back into the direction she (or he) came from more easily if the initial east-west move doesn’t work. To watch a short video on these eastwest cuts, access: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=b8EthX3OFlQ. Try them out and start to develop the east-west side of your game. You’ll be faster!

St. Peter wins the Saints Classic This was the inaugural year for a girls’ division at the Annual Saints Classic High School Hockey Tournament. The St. Peter Saints were determined to bring the championship trophy back to their trophy case. Despite a tumultuous tournament start due to inclement weather and cancellations, the Saints gained momentum as the tournament went on. The Saints opened the tournament with a solid 3 – 0 win over Holy Cross of Peterborough. They followed that up with a scoreless tie versus St. Mary’s of Hamilton and a 1 – 0 win over Maxwell Heights of Oshawa in the round-robin segment. In the semifinal versus St. Mary’s, the offence awoke and rewarded the strong goaltending of Tori Proulx and Maddy Roche. The Saints rolled to a 5 – 1 win thanks to two-point (1G, 1A) performances from Chelsea Campbell and Maddy Moloney. Lauren Bell, Emma Feit and Alicia Wake also added goals. Other than the first shot of the game, Tori Proulx was able to shut St. Mary’s offence down. In the final, the Saints faced Maxwell Heights of Oshawa, a team they had narrowly beaten in their round-robin game. Campbell opened the scoring from Moloney and Katelyn Buckton.

to the team and told them that this was the start of a strong Girl’s division in the Classic, and encouraged them to bring the trophy back to our cabinet. We have a young team with 12 players in grades 9 and 10, but we believe we can win a championship. That’s our goal.” The Saints continue league play in games leading up to Kawarthas, COSSA and OFSSA.

The Saints took full advantage of this momentum and never looked back. They took a 2 – 0 lead on another Campbell goal with assists to Danielle MacDowall and Wake. Moloney struck again to make it 3 – 0 from Meg DeCarlo and Campbell. Before Maxwell Heights got a late tally, Lauren Bell got the Saints their fourth goal with Campbell adding an assist, her fourth point of the game. After the 4 – 1 championship win, St. Peter’s coach Wayne Clarke commented, “We talked with the girls and agreed we are not the type of team who can feel the other team out. We need to force the issue and initiate the attack. We did that in the semis and the final and were successful.” Clarke added, “Steve Stanlick talked

Holy Cross CSS Holy Cross CSS also had an entry that played very well in the tournament. The Holy Cross team was put together for the tournament and played every game tight including a win in the round-robin segment.

Welcome to 2017 with Peterborough Hockey The New Year brings optimism and a chance for redemption in the minor hockey world. With representative teams winding down their regular seasons and the OMHA and Lakeshore playdowns getting set to begin, teams are jockeying for position. Overall, the Peterborough Hockey Association’s (PHA) 23 rep teams are having good seasons. Teams that are excelling include the first-place minor atom AA team that is undefeated in 23 games and the first-place minor atom AE team that won the Christmas tournament in Cambridge and is riding a 10-game win streak. The novice AE team is also in first place and looking to go deep in the post season. A few other teams hoping to go far in playdowns include the Atom AE Maroon, Peewee AE Maroon and Minor Bantam AE — all these teams finished in first place in the regular season. There is a still lot of hockey to watch this winter so get out to your local arena and cheer on the PHA Petes teams as they (hopefully) march towards to some championships at the minor hockey level. On the house league and Roster Select side of the PHA, the season is ramping up with tournaments and league games. The PHA is hosting

two house league tournaments; the first is the PHA Tyke Showdown on the weekend of February 3 – 5. This event features over 40 local tyke teams competing for the prestigious “mini Stanley Cups”. We hope everyone can come out and watch some exciting tyke hockey and perhaps a future hockey star! Then, on February 17 – 19, the PHA has its third annual Mike Mulvaney House League tournament with over 60 teams competing for various age groups, novice through to midget. Teams come from many areas; Ottawa, Oakville, Bancroft, Toronto and Brighton to name a few. We hope the PHA community will come out and support this great event and cheer on our local teams. The hockey season wraps up for the PHA house league by March break and then we will build towards next season and do it all over again! We look forward to seeing everybody at the rink! Have a safe and enjoyable winter of hockey.

The Taber Family The hockey community was deeply affected by the tragic loss of the Taber family from Toronto who perished in a fire on December 26 at their cottage north of Peterborough on Stoney Lake. They had two boys, aged 15 and 13, who both played hockey in the GTHL for Forest Hill Minor Midget A and the Toronto Titans Minor Bantam AAA teams. The PHA reached out to their association to offer condolences. The world of hockey may be very big in numbers and teams across this country but, when tragedy strikes, we are all one big family. The Toronto Titans sent helmet stickers for three teams to honour Andrew Taber #92 for the remainder of the hockey season. PHA’s Minor Bantam AA, Minor Bantam AE and Minor Peewee AE teams will wear those stickers in remembrance of a player we did not know but realize his life ended far too soon.
