How South Windsor Skating Club Spent Their “Summer Vacation” The South Windsor Skating Club (SWSC) has continued to grow in numbers and as a result, it ran an 11 week STARSkate program for the first time in the club’s history. Besides working hard by participating in both off-ice and on-ice training sessions for the entire Summer, the skaters also had some fun…

Three skaters qualified to this event and will have the opportunity to compete in Oakville, Ontario, November 2-5, 2017. More SWSC skaters will be aiming to qualify through the Skate Ontario Fall Series.

To train with provincial and national level skaters and coaches, visit: www.swskatingclub.ca or call Maria at (519) 995-6609 2017-2018 Fall/Winter program information is now available for Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate, STARSkate, Powerskate, AdultSkate, and Adult PowerSkate. Since Figure skating is a cherished Canadian tradition, the SWSC celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday on the ice with a red and white spirit day! Accomplished skaters were Program Assistants (PAs) for Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, CanSkate. The program was back by popular demand this Summer, after a very successful launch in the Summer of 2016. Several of SWSC’s competitive skaters participated in the Skate Ontario Summer Series, which is a competition series designed as a selection process for Skate Ontario Sectional Championships.

Three subtle tricks to help with speed and power As the fall session of high school sports is upon us, we must take a good look at what these sports entail. Football, volleyball, basketball and soccer are all high power sports that require you to run fast and jump high. We know that girls under the age of 15 are at high risk for noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (acl) injuries while many other athletes are

at high risk for developing overuse injuries such as shin splints, patella tendonitis (also known as jumpers knee) and pulled muscles. Over the years, I have found that most of the athletes I deal with become hurt because they have neglected these few areas in their training or because they weren’t aware of the importance of them. We have to remember that these

Key #1 – Don’t forget to train your lower back, glutes and hamstrings. Most people I see training in the gym do a great job of training their lats, rhomboids and traps for their back; the standard leg curl machine for hamstrings and for the glutes many think a low squat is enough. Well it’s not!! The lower back, glutes and hamstrings play a pivotal role in sprinting and jumping and because of that it is of vital importance that they be trained properly to help avoid injury, and get you closer to your sporting goals. There are numerous exercises you can do for these muscles. We love to incorporate hip hinging type exercise such as good mornings, various deadlift methods, Nordic ham curls, hip thrusters and many types of glute bridges. Adding any of these to your program will elevate your fitness to a whole new level.

Key # 2 – Work on your mobility We see a lot of athletes who come in and tell us they feel tight. Stretching is one of those areas where some people really believe in it and some people don’t. There are numerous studies out there that make valid points on stretching being good and bad, but the experts still can’t seem to agree. However, when it comes to mobility, the sports performance community agrees on its importance. All top athletes have some type of mobility put into their training. As an example, for an athlete to reach top speeds, the hips must be mobile enough to get through the proper range of motion to get the knee into the proper position. Certain muscles can get tight or weak, so doing mobility drills may help you see where you may be lacking some attention in your programming

young athletes are growing and developing, and with proper guidance we can not only help to prevent injuries now, but even further down the line. Our abilities to show proper form and methods to these young men and women will aid in successful sports careers in addition to helping them enjoy a healthy lifestyle as well.

health&fitness Key #3 – Learn to land before jumping into a plyometric program. In order to have a really effective plyometric program there must be a good progression. Here at Next Level Athletics, all clients, whether they are athletes, weekend warriors, or kids, start with the most important part of plyos, which is the… landing! Yes, before we teach you how to jump higher, we make sure you know how to land to properly absorb all the forces. Most (if not all) the non-contact injuries I’ve seen in sport occurred during the landing phase and not while the athlete is in the air. So learning to land properly is one of the best things you can do to prevent injury to yourself. Two simple things to help you learn how to absorb the forces are box step offs and box jumps. For the step off use a step about 6 – 18 inches high and step off. Land soft on the balls of your feet and finish in the athletic position. As for the box jump land in the athletic position and stand up when finished.

Summary As you can see these methods are easy to implement into your program. They can be used to help progress you forward in your training and can also help you prevent some of those little nagging injuries that we hate having.

Learn to play while getting educated Students across WindsorEssex now have the chance to pursue their passion by devoting their attention to their sport of choice while earning their education. Launched in the fall of 2014, the WindsorEssex Catholic School Board operates sports academies at the state-of-the-art Central Park Athletics facility. We offer students from grades 7 through 12 the opportunity to develop their skills in hockey, soccer, baseball, gymnastics and volleyball. This issue we focus on hockey; featuring our skills expert, John Nelson.

Meet Coach Nelson

John Nelson, owner of Proven Performance Hockey Academy and PerfectaShot Shooter Tutor, is entering his fourth year with the WECDSB as their Hockey Canada Skills Expert. Coach Nelson is a graduate of the

University of PEI and has a long history with the sport of hockey, not only as a coach, but as a player at the CIS/U, OHL and NHL levels. On the ice, John looked up to Wayne Gretzky and off ice to his father. Coach Nelson is extremely passionate about his sport and believes listening, along with a strong work ethic will lead to having fun in the game. Nelson stresses, “you need to balance new and old school methods”.

Mr. Nelson reveals that his greatest strengths are honesty, thirst for knowledge and skill development and implements these qualities into his coaching methods. Nelson’s goal for the students is to teach life lessons. “It is all about respect, time management, skills, perseverance and not being afraid to fail,” relays coach. Coach Nelson is thrilled to see the Hockey Academy expand from 92 to 140 students and is proud of how the students encourage one another on the ice. The most rewarding aspect, coach reveals, is “I love to see the kids get better on and off the ice”.

Our History

Jasmine Hurst University of Windsor - Hurdles/Sprints

The Border City Track Club was forged by legendary University of Lancer Head Coach Dennis Fairall as an elite track club. It was home to 1996 Olympic 200m semi-finalist O’Brian Gibbons and Decathlete Mike Nolan who placed 10th in the 2001 IAAF World Championships. In 2013,

We had a wonderful time hosting over 300 athletes at the 7th Annual City County Championship Track & Field Meet in June. Thank you to the teachers, parents, high school athletes and grade school coaches that help to make this event so successful. An important thank you goes out to two very special individuals. First, to long time teacher and coach Frank Mazzara. Seven years ago you gave us the medal design and logo concept as a way to include all school boards in the area, under one unique umbrella. Although you have passed on, your vision for smiling kids racing into the summer, will live on with us forever. Last but not least, thank you to Izzy “Mr. O” Oozeer. The machine behind elementary school track and field meets for the better part of the last 30 years. You’ve touched the hearts of thousands of kids in the Windsor Essex County area with your passion, knowledge and love for this sport we hold so dear.

Lancers add Vagnini & Inglis to coaching staff championship title, in addition to a pair of team bronze medals at nationals in 2013 and 2015. The women’s team also captured a team bronze medal at the CIS championships in 2015.

The University of Windsor Lancers were busy over the summer adding a number of new faces to their coaching staff. Stepping into the role of head coach of the Lancer men’s soccer team is Steve Vagnini, while Colin Inglis also returns to his Lancer roots as the head coach of the Lancer track & field program.

Windsor Essex Football League It h as a rrived! We are talking about the 2017 Windsor Essex Football League (WEFL) Season. Kick off weekend was Saturday, September 9 th at 10:00 a.m at Realtor Park. Opening day started while most of our players were still in bed. A handful of dedicated volunteers were there as the sun rose to ensure the fields were prepped and safe for our players. These mornings would embarrass Hollywood - the sun slowly rising, a light fog hovering over dew-covered grass, all while the grounds crew work to get the fields ready for play.

This is what you can expect each and every week at a W.E.F.L football game. The work to make a season happen starts as the new year arrives. The League’s board sets its goals, budgets, and plans on what and how, to give the youth of Windsor and Essex County a great season. This year, we hosted 2 very successful free football camps with the help of our friends at the Windsor Fratmen Football Team. We participated in the Fantastic Fathers Charity event and an open house style mini camp at Mic Mac Park.
