Sitrin Equili•BRAIN•ium — Keeping your life in balance Article by Marc DePero, Proudly supported by Oxford Medical Imaging The Sitrin Health Care Center’s Equili·BRAIN·ium Concussion Management Network is primarily focused on making appropriate clinical decisions regarding when it is safe for athletes and individuals to return to the field of play or everyday activities. Sitrin’s Equili·BRAIN·ium program is composed of five main components: B - Baseline assessment R - Reassess post-concussion/injury A - Action plan and awareness I - Intervention N - Normalizing

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works, and it can have long-term implications if concussions are not treated properly. A concussion is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. Concussions can cause a number of effects, including memory disturbance, vomiting, headache, and dizziness. Proper care when a concussion first occurs can help prevent further injury. It is not uncommon for initial symptoms to resolve, only to return through mental or physical

exertion. It is essential for a medical professional experienced in concussion management to assess the individual. Dr. James V. Wallace, PT, director of clinical rehabilitation services at Sitrin is currently the only Evidence-Based Certified Concussion Management Specialist in Upstate New York. “It is extremely important to seek out specialists in concussion management to ensure safe return to learn/play decisions are being made,” said Wallace.

Get set for pickleball Article and photos by Robert Marquart Pickleball has come to Central New York. You don’t need years of experience playing racquet-related sports, just the desire to have fun and get some exercise in the process. More and more opportunities for outdoor play are cropping up, but there are also an ever-increasing number of places to play indoors. From Cicero to Baldwinsville, Skaneateles to Utica, there are facilities to enjoy this fast growing sport. It’s a form of tennis played with paddles slightly larger than those used for ping pong, the court is slightly smaller than a tennis court, and the ball a modified wiffle ball. Similar to tennis, players can compete in singles or doubles. Players use a modified tennis net and a scoring system that can be challenging at times. The cost for beginners is nominal, as paddles can range in price from $30 to $150 depending upon the construction — wood, graphite, aluminum, etc. There are many retailers to choose from when

investing in the sport. Tournaments are being staged all over the area with competition being based on skill level and age. Doubles competition is the preferred method of play, as there is a bit more strategy involved. It is a game that can revolve around power, but is played most successfully when ball placement and finesse are involved. It’s a great way to meet new people, keep your mind engaged and burn off some unwanted calories.

Cross-country hopes for young team to have strong season Article and photos by Notre Dame High School Based on their previous triumphs, the boys’ and girls’ cross country coaches have set the bar high for this upcoming season. With a thriving team, the coaches began workouts early with a vigorous summer training program that consisted of distance and speed workouts to build the runners’ endurance and speed. The boys’ team is led by Head Coach Kevin Morrisroe and Assistant Coach Roefaro. According to Coach Morrisroe, “The boys have a very promising future. The focus of this season will be to develop the young team of runners that we have in order to be more competitive in future seasons.” The girls’ team is led by Head Coach Erin Crowley. Last season Maggie Keady-Dooley, current co-captain of the

girl’s team, placed in the top 10 girls of Section III, and placed 32nd in the State Invitational in Chittenango. Coach Crowley’s hope this year is to help the

girls work their way to a Section III Championship title and run in the State Invitational.

Notre Dame basketball program hosts first ever “Juggler Madness” event Article by Notre Dame High School

In an effort to set an exciting tone for the 2017-18 boys’ and girls’ basketball season, Notre Dame will be hosting their first ever “Juggler Madness” event on Friday, November 17. You may have seen something similar to what Juggler Madness will be at the college level. Madness events are a tradition in college basketball, where teams celebrate the beginning of their season with a showcase or a skills exhibition in front of their fans in a high-energy environment to build enthusiasm for the season. “It will be a great event that can be passed onto future generations and become an annual tradition,” Athletic Director and Girls’ Head Coach Olivia Tooley said. “It’s a fun, meaningful way to engage fans and bring alumni back to support the program, as well as celebrating the beginning of the new season.” There will be a wide range of entertainment such as the introduction of both the boys’ and girls’ teams, intersquad scrimmages for both teams, hype videos, special alumni guests, shooting competitions from the crowd, give-aways, and the main event, the unveiling of the 1,000-point male and female banners. “The school community is excited to welcome back our alumni for this event, as it enhances the tradition and history that Notre Dame is all about,” claims Tooley. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the Michael Walsh gymnasium. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams return all their starters for the 2017-18 season. With a predominately seniorheavy roster, both teams are expected to have successful seasons. Returning stand-outs for the boys are: Jaylen Warmack, Dante Griffin, and the “big man” Nick Courto. Also returning are Connor Grey, Treijen Garrett and Derek Lindsay. Coach Ryan Goux is really excited for

12

Utica.SportsXpress.com

the season, saying, “The boys have been putting in a lot of work in the off season. They have a tough schedule this year that will really challenge them.” Six of the eight non-league games are bringing in state-ranked opponents from last year. Goux can’t wait to showcase his team. “I think this is a great event to introduce them to the community and bridge the gap with the alumni.” On the girls side, the Sehring sister duo returns for one final year. Claire Sehring has been on the varsity squad since eighth grade. Her younger sister, Emma, will be a junior this year. Jane Hughes is expected to step into the point guard position, and Sarah Snyder will return as the “silent but deadly” player who does the dirty work such as rebounds, steals, and assists. With the return of so many veteran players, and the excitement of the new Juggler Madness event, this year’s season is sure to be a special one!

Jugglers looking to have a big season After narrowly missing the Section III, Class B sectionals last year, the Notre Dame Jugglers football team are longing to have a big season where there are no misses this year. Most of the skilled players are returning and have game experience, and they’ve been working hard this summer. The team has been hitting the weight room, and participating in summer conditioning workouts and football camps. Senior tight end and defensive end, Nick Courto, said the key to this season will be “taking no days off and everyone stepping up to the plate every day since we have smaller numbers.” And it really is a year where all

players will have to step up. Running back and linebacker, Noah Bushey, stated, “There are no seniors on the line, so we are looking for the younger athletes to perform.” Despite the smaller numbers, Coach Jake DerCola is very excited about the team. “We have a very athletic team with a lot of speed. Treijen Garrett is a fantastic athlete to have back on the field. He is a playmaker dual threat quarterback, and I’m looking for him to have a big year. Along with Trey, we have a lot of other talented athletes on the field, both offensively and defensively, who will contribute to our team’s success this year.” In addition to the outlook for the year, the Jugglers will be hosting their inaugural Military Appreciation Game when Notre Dame plays New Hartford High School at Brother Victor McCarthy, CFX Stadium on Saturday, September 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. All branches of the military will be honored and represented during Saturday’s festivities, which will feature pregame activities prior to kickoff. Located in Utica, NY, Notre Dame Schools include Notre Dame Elementary School, which offers Pre-K through 6th grade education, and Notre Dame Jr/Sr High School, a college preparatory Catholic high school which provides tomorrow’s young men and women with a valuecentered and academically-challenging environment. Spotlighting Utica Bulldogs The Utica Bulldogs are a Pop Warner Little Scholars Affiliated Football and Cheerleading Association, and part of the Tri-Valley League. The non-profit organization serves both boys and girls, ages 5 to 16 years old. The Utica Bulldogs came to life in 2006, and they have been going strong ever since. The Bulldogs’ main goal is to give inner city area youth a chance to play football and cheer, while also teaching lessons such as the value of working hard, how to be dedicated, that practice is necessary to succeed at anything, and how to accomplish something bigger than oneself. In recent years, enrollment in Pop Warner football has begun to decline, for a variety of different reasons, but in the 2017 season, the Bulldogs have 160 participants that take the field, playing and cheering, every Sunday. To know that year after year we have an opportunity to have a positive impact on 160 of our community’s next generation is humbling. The Utica Bulldogs Board is currently made up of President, Paris Pearson; Vice President, Tito Colon; Co-Vice President, Carrie Warmack; Treasurer, Lisa Williams; Secretary, Ava Cisson, Cheer Coordinator, Trina Buckingham; and Football Commissioner, Justin Pearson. Some members of the board have been associated with the Bulldogs since the very beginning (like Tito, Carrie, and Trina) and they would attest that once you become a Bulldog, you tend to stay a Bulldog for life. Cheer even unintentionally coined a saying that shows exactly that “UBD4L” (Utica Bulldogs for Life). At Sunday’s game we recognized Senior, Nasiyah Buckingham, 16, who has been a Bulldog Cheerleader since she was five years old! Nasiyah is even planning on coming back next year as a Junior Coach. We wish her the best in all her feature endeavors, but surely none will be as fun as being a Bulldog was! People have gone to great lengths and put in countless hours of volunteer

time, to ensure that the Bulldogs stay around. In addition, there are a lot of coaches, parents, family, and community members, who also volunteer their time, and often come through in a pinch to help out. Lisa Williams, although technically our treasurer, ensures that our concession stand runs without flaw, and it wouldn’t be possible without people like Dora Colon, Danny Santiago, and their son Boobie. We have nicknamed Ava, our secretary, “Ava.Inc” because she is always there for everything. There are too many people to name and thank personally, but it’s all genuinely appreciated. The Bulldogs always welcome and appreciate community support and involvement. It’s what keeps us going. We plan to continue to provide some stiff competition for other area teams, for many years to come. Additionally, we strive to keep registration costs as low as possible to maximize the number of youth in our area who are able to participate, however, an organization this size can’t operate without adequate funding, so sponsorships and fundraising are necessities. The goal for the 2018 season is to enhance fundraising opportunities and area sponsorships, and we would love all the support we can get from our community in that realm! At the High School Level we currently have 15 to 20 Bulldogs in JV and Varsity Levels that are ranging from 8th Grade to 10th grade. These players were a huge part of our success the last 10 years. With the majority of the athletes started with the bulldogs from the flag level and leveling off at our highest Jr Midget division. Proctors JV Team went 7–0 this year. We hope to continue to become a feeder program to both our ND High and our Public Proctor Senior High School. This is a true testament to what the Bulldogs represent.

Meet the SportsXpress Team — Dale Shackleford Article and photos by SportsXpress Dale Shackleford was a highly gifted player for the Utica Notre Dame Jugglers basketball team. Recruited by more than 200 schools, “Shack” decided to attend nearby Syracuse where he was a rare four-year starter, including being the first freshman to start for Coach Roy Danforth. He also started at all five positions at one point or another in his career, including center, notwithstanding his 6’6” frame. After graduation, Shack was drafted in the sixth round of the NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns but failed to make the team. Not letting that deter him, Shack played professionally in Chile and Italy, before finding his next “home” in England. Shack’s professional career blossomed in the British Basketball League where he played for 10 years, and was a player-coach the last three seasons. He was one of the all-time great players in the league, with the highest career rebound per game

Community College, does radio and television broadcasting, and works with young basketball players in camps and clinics throughout Central New York.
