You do not need to hit your head to get a concussion Submitted by VOR (Vestibular & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation) Did you know that you do not need to hit your head to get a concussion? Sport-related concussion is defined as a traumatic brain injury induced by biomechanical forces, caused by either a direct blow to the head, face or neck, or elsewhere on the body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head.1 Concussions can also arise from motor vehicle accidents, falls, or accidents where force is transmitted to the head. Given that concussions can stem from a variety of incidents, each concussion is different and must be assessed individually. All concussions are thoroughly assessed at VOR, and treatment is tailored to the individual client’s needs. VOR promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to care. Therefore, the clinic has a wide variety of staff including physiotherapists, registered massage therapists, certified athletic therapists, occupational therapist, osteopathic manual practitioner, and registered

dietician. Our practitioners regularly attend continuing education courses and conferences about concussion and vestibular management. We follow the most recent sport concussion guidelines, including the Consensus Statement from the fifth international conference on concussion in sport. The expertise of each of these practitioners enriches our patients’ care. The clinic offers an environment that is conducive to rehabilitation, including private rooms for one-on-one treatment and a quiet atmosphere with dimmed lighting to accommodate patients who are sensitive to noise and light. At VOR, we offer a variety of exercises and challenges to promote ongoing improvement, which include: • • • •

• • •

Yoga Concussion exercise group Concussion support group

At VOR, each room is equipped with light suppression goggles to properly assess the vestibular system. In many cases, this system is affected and needs to be addressed.

“How do I know if I am ready to return to activity?” When it is safe, our physiotherapists and athletic therapists complete thorough fitness testing to evaluate exercise tolerance. When ready, the team at VOR will help the patient with: • • •

HEALTH & FITNESS

The Biggest Loser feels like a winner! Submitted by Dal Molnar When I first heard about Eurofit’s Biggest Loser Competition, I just knew I was going to win. I bragged to my colleagues at S.G. Cunningham Limited and to everyone at the fitness studio. I already had my sights set on everything I was going to buy with my prize money. But in reality, I knew I had to make a lot of changes in my daily life to achieve this goal, and I wasn’t all that confident I could actually change. The competition officially started on a Friday, and that weekend I decided to have one last “hurrah” with my old lifestyle before committing to a diet and exercise plan — or the end of my life as I knew it. I went out partying all weekend. I ate three extra-large pizzas in one day, including one for breakfast Sunday morning. As you can imagine, that plunged my morale to an all-time low, and then my chances of winning started to look bleak. However, as the weeks went by, I cleaned up my diet and faithfully worked out. After about a week I noticed physical changes. My body was shrinking, and my mind was so much clearer. These almost-immediate physiological changes were addictive, more so than any drug I could ever imagine. I was hooked. Even on days when I didn’t want to eat healthy and work out, in the back of my mind I still had the itch to do it, almost like a crack addict looking for their next hit. I really have to thank Olesia Fiodorova, owner of Eurofit and the world’s greatest trainer, for creating an amazing program that actually works. With her guidance and support, I was able to lose more than 30 pounds in just two months. I also have to thank my employer, S.G. Cunningham Limited, for providing their office employees with personal training sessions at this unique fitness studio which is just a few doors down from our workplace.

6

As someone who has gone from not really caring about diet to only eating healthily, as well as exercising, I can tell you that the combination of both is awesome. Start slowly. You don’t have to start cooking nutritious meals from scratch every day, straight away, but a small thing like cutting sugary drinks from your diet can make a massive difference in a relatively short period of time. Set goals, and stick to them. Once you see and feel the results, you’ll be on your way. I won’t lie and tell you it’ll be easy, but I’ll definitely confirm that it will be worth it.

THANKS FOR A GREAT 2017 COMPETITION! SEE YOU IN

HOCKEY

Our local hero

Howie Glover, an original six NHL player, former Kitchener Greenshirt, and school crossing guard, at the age of 82 has become our Minor Atom Red “Local Hero” and #1 fan. It was early September when our boys began tryouts. School was back, and so was “Howie the Crossing Guard.” Four of our team members, Aiden, Matteo, Nathan, and Ryan all attend St. John Paul II Catholic School in Kitchener. They were all fortunate enough to be placed in the same classroom with a fantastic teacher and hockey mom, Mrs. Grein. What a great fit to begin the hockey season. Little did we know the “fit” was about to get even better! As we moved closer to our first game of the season,

Submitted by Kitchener Minor Hockey Association

“Howie the Crossing Guard” as everyone knows him, took a real shine to the four boys with their new Jr. Rangers hockey jackets crossing at his crosswalk every day. Howie has always been kind and outgoing to everyone that passes by him near the school. However, this special connection with the four boys seemed different somehow. Howie began offering the boys positive encouragement to work hard and have fun while playing the game they love. It didn’t take long for Howie to ask one of our parents, “When do these boys play?” That parent was Theresa Ertel, and she decided to print off the team schedule and bring it to Howie the next day as her son was crossing at Howie’s crosswalk. Howie continued to talk hockey with the four boys and mentioned that he too “played a little hockey at one time.”

It turns out that humility is one of Howie’s finer traits because he played more than just “a little hockey.” Howie played on four of the original six hockey clubs in the 1950s and 60s. In fact, he played on a team with Gordie Howe. “Mr. Hockey” was Howie’s captain from 1960 until 1962, where Howie Glover scored 21 goals in his first season with the Detroit Red Wings. What a wonderful lesson this has become for those four boys to remain humble, be kind, and you just never know what story someone else has lived. Howie Glover the crossing guard has since attended every one of those boys’ home games with his wife, Janet, and they have become our good luck charms. The team has a record of 9–1 to begin the season. Howie continues to offer plenty of positive advice to our boys and is always smiling. We have named Howie an Honorary Team Member of our club, and we couldn’t have asked for a better role model for our players. We would like to thank Howie for supporting our hockey team the way that Howie and his lovely wife, Janet, do. I am excited to announce that Howie has since been recognized as our Community “Local Hero” with CTV news. I can’t think of a more deserving person than Howie to receive the title of “Local Hero.” Congratulations to our Minor Atom Red team member, Howie Glover!

KWYBA Roundup Submitted by the Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Basketball Association

Jamal Murray headlines clinic in Kitchener On August 10, Jamal Murray of the NBA Denver Nuggets and former KW YBA and Viper player returned to Kitchener to headline a Youth Basketball Clinic sponsored by NBA Canada and their partner BMO at Conestoga College. Thirty-nine young Viper players were put through a variety of skill drills by members of NBA Canada’s Community Outreach coaches along with Jamal. The KW YBA thanks NBA Canada for this great opportunity and Jamal Murray for coming back to his old stomping grounds

10

where he learned the fundamentals that have taken him to the pinnacle of a basketball career.

KW Vipers tryouts begin a new season Tryouts for the KW Vipers rep travelling teams have begun, and a new season has started. With hundreds of players showing up at the various Division tryouts, it looks like there will be expansion occurring for the clubs as two or three more teams may be created to keep more boys and girls on the courts. It appears that there will be three teams of Major Atom Boys and three teams of Major

Bantam Boys in addition to those from last season.

KW YBA House League looks ready to explode The popularity of both the sport of basketball and the KW YBA House League is expanding faster than ever before. KW YBA held their evaluation sessions to ensure all teams were balanced. Our season has been well under way since the end of October. Check our website, www.kwyba.com, for all upcoming events. If you are interested in volunteering at any level, please email us with your interest.

Wildhawks bring NBA partnership to KW

Submitted by the Kitchener-Waterloo Girls Basketball Association Wildhawks

Kitchener-Waterloo Girls Basketball Association Wildhawks has partnered with the NBA to bring the Jr. NBA program to our community for girls between the ages of 5 and 7. The Jr. NBA program is designed for girls who have the eagerness to learn the fundamental aspects of basketball. Many of the girls who participate are introduced to basketball for the very first time. The program provides a fun and encouraging atmosphere where basketball skills are introduced. The fall session proved to be popular and filled quickly. We are excited to announce that we will be offering a winter session as well to accommodate the needs of our community. For more details please visit us at www.kwgba.ca. Each session runs once per week for 12 weeks for a cost of $75. Participants receive a Jr. NBA shirt and junior sized basketball. Our Jr. NBA program has

12

partnered with our Girls U19 Wildhawks team who will assist with sessions and provide mentorship to the Jr. NBA players. Come out and join us! This program is an exciting opportunity for girls in our community. Here’s what parents are saying: “It is an amazing program. And as a parent, I love seeing how the high school girls get out to help coach and mentor the girls. My young girls really do look up to them and have learned so much.” “The Jr. NBA program is seriously a fantastic program for young girls. The coaches have been amazing and the girls thrive in an all girls environment.” “The skills they are learning are fun even when they’re learning the basics such as passing or the team cheers! And the parents get involved in simple drills. The players really respond to

that and the parents become more connected and engaged. Perfect way to keep the enthusiasm going even after practise ends.”

COMMUNITY

Thank you, KSA!

The Kitchener Waterloo International Children’s Games delegation would like to thank Kitchener Sports Association for their support! On June 30, 14 young athletes, four coaches and I, Vanessa Rama, as HOD, said good bye to our families and got on the bus at the Briethaupt Centre in Kitchener and made our way to Pearson Airport where we boarded plane to Warsaw, Poland and then the connecting flight to Lithuania for the International Children’s Games 2017, held in Kaunas from July 4th to 9th. When we arrived at the airport in Vilnius, Lithuania it was 1 p.m. on July 1. The bus ride from Vilnius to Kaunas was very quiet, as everyone was tired and sleepy. We stayed in a hotel in Kaunas and spent two days touring the

Submitted by Vanessa Rama

area. The athletes picked the places they wanted to visit in Kaunas, which were Kaunas Castle, Old Town Kaunas, the War and Sports Museum, and Ninth Fort. These places were all historical, and we all learned lots. The next day we toured Vilnius, which again, had a lot of history. We walked along the streets of Vilnius checking out the churches and city hall. We also visited a nice little authentic Lithuanian store which the athletes tried local foods. When we arrived at the games, the athletes were all excited to get settled and started trading pins with the other athletes from different countries. We all looked sharp in our uniforms for opening ceremony, representing Kitchener, Canada. There were groups from about 90 cities from 35 different countries attending the ICG 2017. Representing Kitchener were: Marina Ilyas, Patrick Ibrahim, and Michael Jaszczur for Table Tennis, along with their coach Attila Masonyi; Davna McLean, Dina Orucevic, Jillian Tulipano, and Lauren Kathen for Girls 3-on-3 Basketball, along with their coach Melissa Tulipano; Brett Moroz, Andrew Kuiper, Alexandra Minard, and Michelle Lin for Swimming, along with their

coach Alexander Johnson; and Aaron Brush, Ethan Izzard and Goanaer Kang for Boys 3-on-3 Basketball, along with their coach Michael Quigley. The athletes all played very well and showed true sportsmanship. Andrew Kuiper went into the swimming finals and came in fifth both times. They all had personal bests, and the teams got stronger playing together. It was an amazing experience for me, the athletes, and the coaches. It is wonderful to see how much the athletes have grown over the short time of 10 days. The International Children’s Games has truly lived up to their motto “Peace Through Sport,” bringing the athletes who range in age 12 to 15 from all over the world to compete, and new friendships were formed.

Indoor Training & Youth Development

In 2017 Kitchener Girls Softball was excited to team up with the local training facility, Blue Chip Sports. Blue Chip Sports is an indoor training facility located in Kitchener providing our competitive softball teams with access to multiple batting lanes and a turfed field. Having this access allowed our competitive teams to improve on their skills over the winter and with lots of hard work many of our teams finished top 5 at the Ontario provincial championships last summer.

Learn To Play

Blue Chip Sports provided instructors for our Learn To Play program which is aimed for girls aged 5 and 6. This is an introduction to softball where the players are taught the basic skills required for playing softball such as throwing, catching, hitting, running and basic game rules in a fun environment. This past season we introduced a new program for girls aged 7 and 8 called Mini-Mite which was also run by Blue Chip instructors. Mini-Mite is designed to provide a transition from Learn To Play into House League. Players are divided into teams of 7 players each and do various skills development stations before competing in a mini-game each night. The mini-game is coach pitch with only infield positions which keeps all the players actively participating in the games.

Mini Mite

The Mite program is for girls under 10 and is where the players start playing full games twice a week. This is also the age where the players start to pitch to each other during games. These teams are run by our volunteer coaches who provide instruction to these young players while providing a positive and fun experience as they develop their skills and learn about team work.

Mite

We will be accepting registration for all our programs (Learn To Play, Mini-Mite, Mite and our older divisions) starting in January. Last year all our youth programs filled before April so make sure to register early to secure your space.

Registration Starts January www.kmgsa.com

The Kitchener Kobras are planning on fielding Select teams for the U12, U14, U16 and U19 divisions in 2018. This program is ideal for players who want to play more competitive softball after the recreational season is finished.

Over 12,000 square feet of turfed surface with hardball/softball pitching lanes, hitting tunnels that are 75ft long / 22ft high and a gym. We have knowledgeable instructors that provide training programs to local baseball and softball teams and offer individual lessons, clinics and camps.
