Get back to a pain-free lifestyle By Jolene MacDougall, RMT – Myofascial Release Therapist

Pain? Tried everything? Then it’s time to try a different approach. John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe, gentle and effective hands-on approach to return you to a pain-free, active lifestyle. Understanding this approach requires an understanding of your fascial system. Fascia is a tough connective tissue which spreads throughout the body in a threedimensional web from head to foot without interruption. Trauma, posture or inflammation can create a binding down of fascia resulting in excessive pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures and/or organs.

Since many of the standard tests such as x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans and electromyography do not show the fascial restrictions, it is thought that a high percentage of people suffering with pain and/ or lack of motion may be having fascial problems, but most go undiagnosed. When an area of fascia becomes tight, hard and restricted, it can create pain or malfunction throughout the body often producing seemingly unrelated symptoms. Most people suffering with pain and/or limited ability to move easily have underlying fascial restrictions.

restrictions. Holding the stretch, or compression, makes the biggest difference to fully soften, lengthen and reorganize the myofascial system, and only Barnes method of MFR consistently seeks to resolve problems in this way. These techniques enable profound awareness and healing on all levels: body, mind and spirit, making this a uniquely comprehensive therapy.

It’s critical to evaluate patients as they stand in gravity, looking for their unique structural compensations. This is the only way treatments can be customized to address your unique imbalances, which give rise to symptoms, instead of treating your symptoms alone. MFR uses gentle, sustained stretch and compression into fascial

Born and raised in Windsor. At a young age I recognized that my natural athletic ability was only going to get me so far. This is when I found my passion for the weight room. I have been in the fitness industry since 2013. I have completed some of the top certifications to date and mentored under Mike Barwis, who is recognized as one of the most successful strength and conditioning coaches in the world. Since mentoring under Mike, I continue to study today’s leading educators in the field of performance & fitness. During my internship at Barwis Methods, I witnessed athletes of all levels; Professional, Olympic, and Collegiate, push themselves to the absolute limits every single day so that they could stay at the top of their sport. But the experience that had the greatest impact on me during my time at Barwis Methods was during my first week. The final hour before I headed home for the night, a young female, who was involved in an accident and was told by all of her doctors she would never walk again, took her first unassisted step in YEARS. The atmosphere in the gym changed immediately. Every professional athlete instantly stopped what they were doing to encourage her and this amazing accomplishment. I immediately knew I was exactly where I wanted and needed to be. With numerous binders full of research, a hustlers ambition, and one BIG dream. I started King Performance Systems. This is where my Journey continues today...

WFFA holds two successful events Photos by Kathy Guenette

The Windsor Finest Family was excited and honored to host the 4th Annual Windsor’s Finest Football Academy on April 8, 2017. Windsor’s Finest Football Academy (WFFA) is a youth football camp assembled by local players from the NFL and CFL football leagues.

On the field, WFFA offered a one-day, two-session camp packed full of football and speed fundamentals. The day featured one-on-one interaction with mentors with past, or current, experience participating in the highest level of football. Off the field, our camp mentors introduced the topic of Anti-Bullying through assemblies with personal stories and experiences.

We hope, through the experiences of Windsor’s Finest Football Academy, that our participants will grow on the field as athletes and off the field as leaders in the community. Our mission at WFFA is to use the sport of football to help advocate anti-bullying, leadership, teamwork, nutrition, motivation, goal setting and, most importantly, having passion for achieving goals. We’re providing an opportunity for the youth in the Windsor community to learn from the knowledge and experience of the professional athletes on our coaching staff so they, in turn, can develop into leaders and reach their goals. This year also marked the inaugural “A Night with the Stars” event. Held at the Ariius Nightclub, the night offered guests the opportunity to engage in a meet and greet with Windsor

natives Tyrone Crawford and Daryl Townsend along with several NFL and CFL stars. Guests were treated to a Q & A session, a silent auction and photo and autograph opportunities.

Fit For Booty: Young Lives Matter Fit For Booty, founded in Saskatchewan in 2012 by Jesse Keith, is a lifestyle company based around the health and fitness industry. We began with a blog and steadily grew, eventually launching a line of boutique athletic gear. Jesse, originally from Windsor, has a wife Samantha and daughter Skylar. Along with the boutique line, we created a charitable fund. A percentage of the proceeds goes toward providing youth with mentorship and coaching in the gym. We organize events with local establishments such as gyms, food-prep companies, restaurants, Jumpstart, Big Brothers & Big Sisters — groups that want to participate in helping our youth become the best they can be. Our charitable work: In 2015, we raised $5,000 for Big Brothers of Regina with assistance from the workers and contractors of the K+S Legacy Site through a 50/50 draw. In 2016, we collaborated with a local gym (Mettle Performance), in Regina, Saskatchewan. They provided their facility, trainers, and powerlifting national competitors to assist with program development for the kids. We also had help from a local food-prep company (Best Food Forward) that prepared pre and post-workout meals. A local restaurant (The Rock Creek Tap and Grill) provided gift cards for social media giveaways. Once everything was established, we had the kids join us at Mettle Performance where we provided the pre-workout

meal, introduced the team, and took them through custom-built training programs tailored to their age groups. After exercise and stretching, we provided a postworkout meal and had a Q&A session on the session’s material. We did this every Sunday for the month of June. The kids absolutely loved this program and so did the parents.

will run into one of them when you visit so, don’t be shy, say hello! Invitation to join us

Our goal is to expand our program as far as possible. We believe every kid should have the chance to participate in programs like this. First, starting out in the gym is intimidating for everyone, especially when working out next to people who are much further ahead athletically. Imagine how many kids walk into gyms and have self-esteem issues. They see people who are much more advanced physically than they are and they get intimidated and never return. This program is designed specifically to break those barriers. We partner kids with role models so when they step into the gym, they have the confidence and fundamentals in place to be successful! We are super excited to have Jason Dufault partner with us as our Ontario district manager. Jason lives in Windsor and has an 11-year- old daughter, Madison. He has worked efficiently at establishing ground here in Windsor and has big plans to expand our program throughout Ontario and into the United States. He has worked hard to build a TEAM FFB in Windsor. We are excited to introduce our team’s three brand ambassadors: Samantha Laforet, Candice Vetor and Alisha Reid. Chances are you

We will soon be launching a full-blown mentorship program through our parent company, Lifestyle Development Groups LTD. Our goal is to provide youth with an opportunity to work hands-on with mentors in the fields in which they aspire to be, whether that be sports, business, or other career choice. This will either motivate them to pursue their dreams or provide them with an eye-opener if they discover that the career isn’t what they expected. We can help refocus and guide them towards something more suitable. We believe that hands-on experience is the best way to explore career choices. Attack your core strength with these 5 exercises We all know the standard exercises when it comes to the abdominals. We have been doing crunches and sit-ups for years and years and yet we are not seeing

any progress. Although there are a variety of reasons why you might not be seeing the results you want, one reason is you might not be changing up the exercises and

Single arm barbell hold To begin, set up in the squat rack and set the safety pins to a height that is just below where you will be holding the barbell. Do this in case the bar slips out of your hand. Once you pick up the bar, hold it and stand up as straight as possible. Try to fight the urge to lean over. Remember to keep your stomach braced. If the barbell is too challenging to start, try using a dumbbell until you are able to hold a barbell. Grip strength may be the limiting factor in this exercise. Try 1 to 3 sets with 10 to 30-second holds per side.

Pallof Press This is a great anti-rotation exercise. Although it seems easy upon first glance, once you actually try it, you will discover that this one is a killer. Begin by standing tall. Use a hip-width foot-stance and come away from the anchor point as far as you can. Then stay nice and tight through the core and begin to push straight out in front of you. Hold for a second and return to the starting position. Do your best not to rotate or stand with one shoulder higher than the other. Begin with 1 to 3 sets of 8 to 15 repetitions.

Swiss ball rollouts Begin this exercise by getting a good base of support with the feet. The wider you position your feet, the more stability you will have. Once you have the stance established, begin with your forearms behind the ball. Push your elbows forward while keeping your core nice and tight. Don’t push out so far that your back begins to arch because that has a negative effect on the exercise. You will only need to roll your elbows slightly to be able to feel this in the abdominals. Once you hit your end-range, hold for a second then return to the starting position. Begin with 1 to 3 sets of 8 to 15 repetitions.

hitting all the angles properly. This month I’m going to show you five “core” exercises that we use as staples at Next Level Athletics.

health&fitness Swiss ball crunch For this version of the crunch, we incorporate both the upper and lower abs into the movement. First, make sure that you don’t have a ball so big that you feel like you’re going to roll off it. To start this exercise, position the ball on your lower back and let your glutes and shoulders fall over the ball but continue to keep your eyes up so you don’t lose your place on the ball. I tell all players and clients to keep their arms straight up pointed to the ceiling while squeezing your glutes straight up as well. By doing this, you will see that your abs light right up and you won’t be able to curl as far forward. Hold at the top for one second, then slowly lower your body back down under control. Try 1 to 3 sets of 8 to 15 repetitions.

Swiss ball roll in This one really hits the lower abs. I prefer this to the ab chair because there is less likelihood of you getting into a swinging motion. Start the roll in in a push-up position with your feet on top of the ball. From there, keep a nice tight core and bring the ball towards your chest. Once you’ve found your proper range of motion, slowly return the ball to the starting point. The hard part will be going back out with the ball. Begin with 1 to 3 sets of 8 to 15 repetitions.

Summary In every one of these exercises, it is very important to use proper form. These exercises require a component of stability so, when trying them, remember to go slowly and stay under control.

If you fail to do so, you may feel other muscles more because they will be the ones working harder. As athletes, we require stability and more strength so we can distribute force properly and powerfully
