Muscle recovery for youth athletes Submitted by BodyWorx Muscle recovery is a largely underestimated and talked about subject amongst youth athletes. The expectation of training hard and multiple weekly hours is there, as is the expectation of 100% effort and staying injury free. But what we don't focus on very often is HOW to maintain healthy strong muscles and surpass peak efforts through recovery fuel.

Every time we ask our athletes to train, we are essentially breaking down their muscles. Preparing for practice through proper nutrition, including higher carbohydrate and readily available sugars is key ahead of time, but afterwards what should we be asking our athletes to do?

Keys to recovery: 1. Sleep 2. Stretching and facial rolling 3. Nutrition Nutrition after training sessions should consist of BCAA’s (branch chained amino acids), 200-350 calories (a combination of both protein and carbohydrates). As a general guideline, protein should be between 20-30g and carbohydrates between 40-60g. Try this out posttraining …

supplements. Their ‘Amped Recovery’ is a post-workout recovery drink that is chalked full of BCAA’s and is recommended for older athletes and adults. IsaLean Shakes, however, are perfect for our youth athletes on the run. Easy to shake and go … just mix with water! 240 calories, 25-36g protein and 24 grams of carbs. Add a banana to top up your carbohydrates on especially heavy training days. Timing is also key. Make sure to get your smoothie in within the hour posttraining for the best muscle recovery results!

Why run on trails?

out runners of all persuasions (plus the occasional dog). Even in a city like London, there are plenty of trail options around to get a little mud on your shoes. Popular spots include the trails in Komoka, Medway Valley Heritage Forest, and Fanshawe Conservation Area. For the competitive type, MEC London even organizes a race at the Fanshawe Conservation Area on September 9, which includes 6km, 12km, and half-marathon races on the trails (and the MEC race on Oct. 21 at Gibbons Park also offers a 5km and 10km trail option). If you’re more of a road runner, just remember that there’s a whole new world of running waiting for you if you’re willing to leave the pavement behind!

By Cheryl Madliger, MEC staffer and avid trail runner Many runners opt to run the same route over and over again, logging mile after mile in their neighborhood or in a loop of the park. While there’s something to be said for consistency, switching things up and taking things off-road is a great way to switch up a running routine. People often choose trails as a softer surface that are easier on the joints. But don’t make the mistake of thinking that trail running is easy. The ups and downs, rocks and roots, and winding terrain are great for building athleticism as a runner. Guaranteed hills offer an opportunity to build strength and power, and moving across varied ground forces runners to

develop the coordination and balance that we could all use more of. Besides these physical benefits, running on trails requires focus that some say borders on zen-like. Bounding around and over obstacles feels a lot like playing, which is something most of us don’t do enough of. The trail running type tends to be friendly, and on the routes in and around London you’ll often come across groups of smiling trail runners out doing their thing. They don’t require anything special – some shoes and some motivation – but what they get from the experience is special. MEC London’s Sunday run meet-up at Kains Woods in Northwest London draws

playoff MVP, Ryan Anderson. Both will be back in London next season ready to defend the Lightning’s championship title. “I had a great time here in London,” said White. “I couldn’t have asked to play in a better situation or organization for my first pro season. My life here is balanced. I had great comradery with the guys, and a lot of support from the London community.” Anderson echoed White’s thoughts. “The city of London and the Lightning organization is the best place to play in Canada,” the forward said. “We owe another championship to our fans and the city.”

Conquering fear! By Natascha Wesch, PhD Why is fear such a debilitating problem for many athletes? Fear is an emotion that we experience when we face danger or when we believe we are in danger. This belief or perception that we are in danger is often the root cause for most athletes. And this perception of fear causes our body and brain to react, which impacts our performance. Here’s an example: Recently, I took up the sport of triathlon. Prior to five years ago, my swimming skills were enough to ensure my safety in a pool or lake, but not enough to propel me through the water with any speed. As I enter longer distances, my mind creates this fear of open water swim. I think, “Okay, I can do 500m, but how am I going to swim 4km

Fear is a normal reaction experienced by athletes. But it can be conquered, through self-talk and repetition

for the ironman?” I create fear because I perceive there’s a danger, and then I put obstacles in my way, such as not going to open-water swim practices. It’s total self-sabotage. But there’s a way to conquer fear. First, have a dialogue with it. I think of Fear as a person. Fear’s job is to alert me of possible dangers. Fear makes sure I’m aware – he freaks out, gets all nervous and sweaty and panicky. But I can have a conversation with Fear. Here’s how it goes: “Hey Fear, thanks for pointing out all the potential dangers. But here are all the reasons why I CAN do this, and why I don’t need to be afraid: I’ve been training in the pool all summer, I know how to swim. I might not have done lots of open water swimming, but I can change that. I’m going to join the local triathlon group and start getting in the water. I can do this.” This conversation can give me enough of a nudge to get me to the lake. And it did. My first open water swim practice wasn’t great. I panicked because I think I felt the plants and little fish touch me. But I went back, and it was better. I kept telling myself, “You can do this, just keep

practicing and it will get easier. Face your fear. You’ve got this.” The combination and repetition of encouraging self-talk and facing my fear head-on in small manageable bites resulted in me getting more and more comfortable with my swim. I’ve now actually completed the 4km distance. Does that mean I’ll never be afraid or nervous or doubtful again? No. But I’m not trying to eliminate fear. It is useful; but I get to decide if Fear will paralyze me or if it will simply do its job of warning me and ensuring that I take the proper steps to prepare. So, bring it on, Fear, I have the tools to conquer you!

Hitting the diamond down south By Rob Jamieson for LDBA Baseball The London District Baseball Association (LDBA) has long been considered one of the stronger loops in the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA). But how do our teams stack up against competition from across the U.S.? The 2005 London Tecusmehs, ’05 London West Tincaps and ’05 London Badgers all travelled south of the border in July to find out, competing against teams made up of some of the best 12-year-old ballplayers in the country. Both the Tecumsehs and Tincaps represented the LDBA – and their province and country – in Cooperstown, New York, widely considered by many to be the birthplace of baseball. The London Badgers, meanwhile, put their talent to the test in Sundusky, Ohio where they squared off against teams from Michigan and Ohio in a talent-laden weekend tournament. Although results varied by team, the conclusion was clear: our young ballplayers in the LDBA can compete with anyone! The tournament(s) in Cooperstown are week-long affairs that feature up to 50 teams per week. From Florida to California, Texas to Michigan, and Chicago to South Carolina, this spectacle is a showcase of state champions, tournament super teams and elite level talent. The Tecumsehs and Tincaps played nine and eight games, respectively, during their time in Cooperstown, and they competed

in every contest. Although the standings showed that they won a combined four games, the Tecumsehs and Tincaps held a lead in 13 of the 17 games and lost seven of their contests by three runs or less. In other words, the boys were able to compete at the highest level. That in itself is a win for our young athletes. “We can’t control wins and losses,” said Tecumsehs Head Coach Bob Picken. “But what we can control is our effort, attitude and development, and how we represent our country, province, city and association.” The Tincaps shared the same outlook for the tournament. Expectations were to compete and develop while creating a lifetime of memories for the players. “The outcome of the games is less important than our boys walking away with the knowledge that they can compete with anyone,” said DJ Robins, the non-parent Head Coach of the Tincaps. “And win or lose, we are a better team today because of it.” The Badgers, meanwhile, also competed well in Sundusky. A long-time participant in the Cooperstown tournament for the past number of years, Head Coach Stephan Miron instead led his team in a more regional-centric tournament. Known for developing the fundamentals of baseball starting at the 11U level, the

London Badgers program enters numerous showcases every year in the United States. With teams this year from 12U to 18U, this is a trend that is expected to continue. The experience, relationships, memories and development that the London Tecumsehs, London West Tincaps and London Badgers received through these tournament opportunities are undeniable. Planning is already underway for next year’s group of 12U athletes, and it is certainly reasonable to expect a return to these same tournaments. Before every game, Coach Picken reminds his players of the first four words in the baseball rule book: “Baseball is a game.” This is true, and what a great game it is!

Facility filled with activity Submitted by Centrefield Sports As the weather changes, the leaves begin to fall, and ice skates and hockey gloves earn their spots outside of the closet, Centrefield Sports looks to keep the baseball season going into the colder months, while also introducing athletes of all disciplines to some of the other possibilities that await at the indoor facility. Extended hours and baseball clinics will both begin at the start of October. The facility will be open every day of the week to ease winter woes, with a fourweek clinic to get the offseason going. An eight-week clinic will then run through November and December, as well as rookie, mosquito and slo-pitch leagues

continuing throughout the fall. Private baseball lessons and rentals are also available, but slots are limited and will fill up quickly. Highlighting the fall season is the facility's annual college and pro showcase, held in October to feature standout area baseball players. The event brings in recruiters and professional scouts to London. Autumn will mark the start of a new season for the Great Lake Canadians program, after its teams won Canadian Premier Baseball League championships at the 14U, 15U and 18U levels during the summer. Beyond being a baseball haven all-year

round, Centrefield Sports, the incredibly spacious, diverse, and fully-turfed facility, is also home to a number of other sports, for both training and leagues. The facility offers its multi-purpose space to football training, rugby, soccer, cricket, lacrosse, field hockey and flag football, among an array of other activities. Memberships to the facility are available to suit any need and commitment level, varying in length from one month to 12 months, with gym-specific memberships also offered.

McQueen making an impact By Matt Hiscox and photo by Matt Hiscox Photography Over the years, the London Majors have become consistent contenders for the IBL championship. A large part of the team’s success has been that of their infield defence, and since the summer of 2015 Chris McQueen, a Brantford native who grew up in London, has been protecting the right side of the infield and helping the Majors’ lineup grow with his knowledge of the game. The versatile McQueen is now a staple on the infield and at the top of the batting order. Between his speed, bunting skills and great eye at the plate, teams

Fall tryouts ahead Submitted by Eurostar Football Academy As most OSA league seasons start to wind down, Eurostar teams will continue to enjoy outdoor field action as part of the Soccer Academy Alliance of Canada (SAAC) league, which wraps up in early November. Planning is progressing well for our fall/winter program, and training will continue uninterrupted 3 to 4 times a week for most age groups. We look forward to moving to our indoor turf facility in November - the Eurostar Training Centre. In the meantime, fall tryouts are now available over the months of September and October. Eurostar offers an elite development program focused on an in-

tense mix of technical and tactical skills. Led by a team of European-trained and licensed coaches, our program attracts players across the region from Sarnia through to Woodstock. Check us out today!

are having trouble handling him. Even if a third baseman or first baseman gets to a well-placed McQueen bunt, his speed frequently helps him get on base. And that’s where the fun starts for McQueen – and the Majors’ fans. His specialty on offence is stealing bases, and at the time of this writing his 12 stolen bases were second in the IBL. At the plate, McQueen recorded his 100th hit in his 100th career game in the IBL on July 14, 2017. And he has shown that he knows how to read a pitch, as he was third in walks this year with 18 at the time of this writing. Through his first 88 at-bats this season, McQueen posted an impressive .330 average and 14 RBI. But not only has McQueen been productive at the plate, he has saved the team runs

Eurostar alumni, Kian Newell (99), right, with Coach Luka Shaqiri. Kian, who played this past year for the U18 Atlético Sanluqueño CF in Cadiz, Spain, spent his summer home in the London area training with Eurostar. He returned to Spain to rejoin his Spanish club in late August. Atlético Sanluqueño qualified for La Liga first division action this coming season, and Kian will be playing against other top academy teams through 2017/18. We wish him well. Three other 2000-born Eurostar players are preparing for tryouts with other academy teams in Italy later this fall.

Eurostar U10 and U13 teams travelled to Benidorm, Spain in early July to play in the Costa Blanca Cup soccer tournament. This was the first European soccer event for many of these players, who enjoyed a true international experience both on and off the field. Players were excited to also take in a tour of Camp Nou, home of FC Barcelona, while visiting the region.

in the field with his tremendous range and vertical. On his off-time, the 23-year-old McQueen finds himself early in the mornings out in the bushes, trading his baseball bat for a crossbow. Every player has their way of enjoying their time and relaxing, and for McQueen that means doing some hunting (he even has a full-sleeve tattoo on his left arm that displays his two passions for baseball and hunting). Truly a team player who loves the game, McQueen also has a big heart, and he appreciates the fans, always staying to make sure every fan leaves with a smile. On Canada Day, McQueen was even found alongside some of his teammates helping clean up the diamond with leaf blowers and rakes after

a big rainfall threatened to wash away the traditional July 1 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. As a young boy, Chris grew up with his younger brother, Cohen, who is currently a baseball player for the London Tecumseh Mosquitoes. The elder McQueen played baseball and hockey until he was 18, along the way playing for London Tecumseh and the London Badgers. He also played in college with the St. Clair Saints. And he even stays on the diamond during the Majors’ offseason, serving as an associate coach for the Fanshawe College baseball team.

Club continues to raise the bar Submitted by FC LONDON and photos by Martin Bazyl Photography Since the beginning of the 2017 season, FC LONDON’s League1 women’s coach knew that he had something special: A group of young women, all from London, who trained hard and were focused on one goal … to excel at their sport. “As the team started the season, you could see the passion for the game and the camaraderie that each player had for their teammates,” said Michael Marcoccia, League1 Ontario’s ‘Top Coach’ in 2016. The FC LONDON ladies certainly haven’t disappointed. Starting with the club’s U21 teams, both have exceeded expectations. Not only have both squads won their respective U21 OWSL divisions, by defeating top U21 teams from across the province, but they have also won scoring titles in both leagues, with Kaila

Novak and Alexandra Hicks taking home the honours. As a 15-year-old, Novak was also selected to represent Canada at the U17 ‘4 Nations Tournament’ in China, where she started every game (against Japan, China, and the United States). Further, the talented players have given Marcoccia a strong roster of call-up players for his League1 squad. So much strength, in fact, that the top women’s team won the CUP competition trophy, which they hoisted on a beautiful evening in August. Jade Kovacevic, meanwhile, is well on her way to winning the league scoring title too, rounding out a trifecta for the club in the 2017 season. On the men’s side, a run of 10 games undefeated was not enough for FC LONDON to catch the top level of competition in the league this year, and teams like Sigma and Oakville Blue Devils led

the way down the stretch towards the league title. This year’s winner will get a spot in the CONCACAF championship and compete against top professional teams from across the country. The FC LONDON Academy has also made a huge splash this year by being accepted into the OPDL league, which will allow its teams to now play against Ontario’s best. The Academy’s young players will compete for OASL and OPDL glory in 2018. “It’s been quite a year, starting with the Audi sponsorship, and now with loads of hardware to show for our efforts,” said FC LONDON president Ian Campbell. “Looking ahead to 2018, it’s great to be a part of something that is truly changing the soccer landscape here in London.”

Joining the elite ranks Submitted by FC LONDON Academy The FC LONDON Academy has officially joined the elite Ontario Player Development League (OPDL). And what does that mean exactly? It means that the club’s players will now be competing at the highest level, playing against the best of the best in their respective age groups. The OPDL is part of the player development pathway that eventually lands players onto provincial and national teams, as well as pro squads – like Toronto FC. For FC LONDON, the full pathway now begins at U8 in the Ontario Academy Soccer League (OASL), moves to the OPDL for players U13 to U16, then to the U21

program, and then on to FC LONDON’s League1 team. A next step could be to Toronto FC of MLS. The FC LONDON Academy offers the high-quality training facilities, a periodization training method, top coaching, and professional video analysis. OPDL and OASL assessment dates are now set. Visit www.fclondon.ca for full details. Meanwhile, the new TFC LONDON Mini Academy is looking for boys and girls aged 7 and under (born in 2011 and 2012). The Pre-Academy offers an excellent opportunity for youngsters to hone their skills. The program covers 40

weeks, including two training days and one game per week. Players will certainly benefit from the top-notch coaching and exposure to elite training at a young age. And they’ll even receive a season pass to FC LONDON’s League1 men’s or women’s games! For more info, visit the Academy website or contact manager@fclondon.ca.

OPDL-approved! Submitted by Whitecaps London and photos by Cam Vassallo The Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) has awarded a league license to Whitecaps London beginning in the 2018 season. A new high-performance club in Southern Ontario, Whitecaps London will now be part of the high-performance player pathway providing opportunities for talented youth in Southern Ontario, and connecting to Major League Soccer (MLS) club Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The club will operate independently from its community affiliate, the London Youth Whitecaps. In addition, the club announced that Sarnia FC has also become a community affiliate, and that the club will be providing additional affiliate opportunities to interested clubs in Southern Ontario as part of its player pathway in the Ontario Soccer and OPDL structure. The club will start by operating an U13 boys and U13 girls team for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, which will be under the technical direction of Mike Ayyash, the head coach of the Whitecaps FC Southern Ontario Academy Centre. Whitecaps London will also be running U12 Boys Pre-OPDL and U12 Girls PreOPDL teams, with the focus on preparing players for OPDL in 2019. Success through sacrifice – and fun! Submitted by NorWest Soccer With the Outdoor season behind us, a BIG THANK YOU goes out to our House League and Competitive volunteers who returned once again to help deliver a fantastic season! Every season, parents and coaches sacrifice a significant amount of their time to bring the joy of soccer to their kids. These sacrifices are not often easy to make, but they are made to keep the love of the game going. The players and the Club appreciate it, and we thank you for your commitment! At NorWest Soccer, we recognize the importance of putting players first. This means ensuring that every player has the best soccer experience possible to further develop their passion and interest

in soccer. The unfortunate reality is that 70% of youth soccer players in Canada will quit by the age of 14! In recent years, we have adopted the Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) program to try and reduce this trend in the London area. Long-Term Player Development focuses on guided development and game-realistic activities, aspects that are important in soccer skills development. The belief with Long-Term Player Development is that players will learn more and have more fun, thus increasing the likelihood that they will continue playing soccer. Our Indoor Skills Program for the Fall/ Winter season will be returning in 201718! This Long-Term Player Development-

Players aged U5 to U12 can have fun while developing their soccer skills, with soccer-based activities and small-sided games. Grand opening for grand addition Submitted by the BMO Centre It was a very exciting summer for the BMO Centre. Although the summer months can be a little quieter around the facility, this year was a major exception. Besides a number of indoor leagues running, and a new and improved BMO Academy (Skills and Drills Program) and lots of birthday parties, most of the excitement surrounded the new addition to the Centre, which is about 70% complete and which is slated to be finished at the end of September. And what would a new addition be without a grand opening? Londoners are being asked to ‘save the date’ for the grand opening, which is being

planned for Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 11:00am. To celebrate the grand opening, the BMO Centre will be hosting an indoor, coed soccer tournament for ages 18 and up. For more details, please call the Centre at 226-289-2838 (or visit the website at www.bmocentrelondon.com) and the staff will be happy to get you registered. Those who have had the opportunity to see the new addition from the outside have been amazed by the magnitude of the expansion. With two new fields, there will now be a total of six indoor fields which can accommodate even more teams. From toddlers to seniors, there

will be a program for everyone. For more information about the various programs, as well as room rentals for meetings or other corporate functions, please visit the BMO Centre website or give us a call at the number mentioned above. Most Londoners believed that the BMO Centre was impressive long before the expansion began this spring, but this new addition puts the BMO into another stratosphere. There will be nothing like it in Southwestern Ontario, and it will truly rank with the best in the country.

Wilson named Volunteer of Year Submitted by London Minor Football Association Recently, London Minor Football president and long-time coach and volunteer, Shawn Wilson, was recognized at a reception by the City of London as one of the Volunteers of the Year for 2017. Shawn started out as an assistant coach in the tyke division (ages 9 and under) and coached with the Red Storm for over 10 years, long after his son had graduated into high school football. He joined the LMFA executive four years ago, and became president two years ago. The annual reception honours hardworking long-time volunteers from sports organizations across London. Like most non-profits, LMFA relies on volunteers throughout the year. Many people work countless hours behind the scenes so that we can provide almost 700 young athletes the chance to play football every

fall. LMFA is a house league that provides all players, ages 7 to 13, regardless of experience or ability, the chance to join a team, make friends, stay active, and learn teamwork. Every Sunday in the fall, the 24 teams compete on the fields

at Citywide Park, leading up to LMFA Championship Day on November 5. For more information on the 2017 LMFA fall season, please visit www.lmfafootball.ca or call 519-852-4465.

Atoms a force in 2017 Contributions by Bruno DeSando and photo by London Junior Mustangs It’s tough to pick a season highlight for the London Junior Mustangs Atom team in 2017. The squad impressed on the field throughout the summer while traveling all over southwestern Ontario and the GTA competing against their OMFL opponents during the regular season. Meanwhile, they reached the semi-finals in postseason play, losing a tough overtime game. And in late August they got the opportunity to play on an NFL field. In other words, it was a season to remember for the Atoms. “Our team never backed down,” said coach Bruno DeSando, who has been

coaching football in London for 10 years. “Our players had a great attitude, and every single one of them developed into a better player by the end of the year.” The Atoms had a roster of 26, with only six returnees – although most others had played in the London Minor Football Association (LMFA). But despite only a handful of players having competed together before, the team gelled quickly and it was evident on the field immediately. “We were very well-rounded, with both a strong offensive and defensive line,” said DeSando. “We had great skill players

on both sides of the ball, our quarterback and running backs were great athletes, and we were able to play defense.” On August 25, that talented team traveled to Ford Field in Detroit and scrimmaged against a team from Grand Rapids, Michigan at halftime of an NFL exhibition game between the Detroit Lions and defending champion New England Patriots. “All the players got to meet NFL players and play in front of thousands of NFL football fans,” DeSando said. “It was definitely a great opportunity.”

Perfect season for Varsity champs Contributions by JP Circelli and photos by London Junior Mustangs You couldn’t have drawn up a better season for the London Junior Mustangs’ Varsity team, as the eldest squad donning the purple and white dominated play in the Ontario Provincial Football League (OPFL) all summer en route to going undefeated (11-0) and steamrolling another (previously) undefeated Ottawa squad, 35-0, in the championship game to earn their first league title since 2012. “Our players really bought into the team concept,” said head coach JP Circelli. “That was really the driving force. We took a group of talented athletes from all over the city, many who had great high school careers, and we created a fun and

Proudly supported by

selfless environment for them to succeed.” It certainly worked. The Varsity Mustangs, a group of 60 athletes who played in the OPFL’s Western Conference and traveled from Windsor to Niagara to play regular season games throughout the summer, ran the table with a perfect 10-0 record before capping off the season with a dominant championship win in Kingston. The majority of the team’s athletes had played together in the past, or knew each other from London’s football circles. Still,

Circelli says, it took awhile for the team to get going on offense. But you wouldn’t have known that by the end of the year, as the offense by then was simply explosive, highlighted in part by running back Tazie Vang Bell, the team’s overall MVP. Circelli, who has had a lot of success coaching with the Jr. Mustangs for six seasons and had a lot of success with this current group of athletes (he moved up from JV coach to Varsity this year), also credited an impressive defensive unit and special teams group in helping put the team in a position to win it all. “Everyone came together,” Circelli said. “It really was a special season.”

Junior Varsity ‘Stangs While the Junior Varsity Mustangs didn’t have the success of some of the other organization’s teams this summer, the team nonetheless improved throughout the year and built on different aspects of the game that will help them in 2018. “The team certainly enjoyed some strong play throughout the season, despite the fact that some key players went down with injuries,” said Circelli. “They had a great run game and a strong defensive unit. There was no shortage of talent on the team, that’s for sure.’ In order to get back to the playoffs in 2018, Circelli says the team will be focused on talent identification from around the city in the offseason. “A new coaching staff is on board, and they’ll certainly be focused on returning this team to its winning ways,” Circelli said. “They’re already looking ahead to returning to the playoffs next year and having a lot of success.”

The London Junior Mustangs’ Varsity team went all the way in 2017, winning the OPFL championship, 35-0, after an impressive undefeated season

Though the Jr. Mustangs’ Junior Varsity team missed the playoffs in 2017, the team wasn’t without its strengths, including a strong defensive unit and a great run game. They’re already geared up for a return to the postseason in 2018

The love of coaching cheer… Submitted by Power Cheer Gym We asked the coaches and instructors of the Power Cheer Gym why they love coaching and what drives them. Here are some of their comments … “Working with athletes of all ages … from the tiniest tiny, to the ‘old kids’ on our collegiate teams; seeing their excitement as they hit a skill for the first time makes all the hard work worth it.” – Garrett, 11 yrs coaching, 7 yrs cheering “I love coaching because I, myself, have been in the cheer world for so long, and it is the most rewarding feeling watching the athletes you coach fall in love with the sport just like I did. I also love watching them not only grow as athletes but as people, both inside and outside the sport.” – Kim, 6 yrs coaching, 11 yrs cheering

“My favourite part about coaching is watching my team progress and achieve their goals. Throughout my own career, I found that having a coach that cares is the most important factor in success and enjoyment of the sport. I wanted to help my sport in a meaningful way, so helping these kids meet and achieve their goals makes me proud of how far they have come and what they can accomplish.” – Max, 2 yrs coaching, 8 yrs cheering

(Special Needs Coach), 8 yrs coaching, 4 yrs cheering “My favourite thing about being a coach is to watch the athletes grow over the years and taking what you taught them as they move through the program.” – Lauren, 8 yrs coaching, 4 yrs cheering “My favourite part about coaching is getting to share my love for the sport with little hearts that love it too.” – Joanna, 5 yrs coaching, 9 yrs cheerleading

“Cheerleading has been an outlet for me for the last 16 years. It has provided me with the ability to grow as an individual as well as a member of a team. It has helped me to inspire others to develop their passion and to create an environment for everyone of all abilities to fall in love with this amazing sport.” – Brittany

“As corny as it sounds, the best part about coaching is seeing my athletes succeed – not only in the sport, but as students and as adults. Over my 38 years as a coach, the best memories and the best motivators to me are not the championships or the ‘wins,’ but the sharing of learning and personal development of my athletes over seasons, careers and lifetimes. Ideally, as the director of the Power Cheer Gym, I want all of our coaches to carry this same passion.” – Coach Trace, 38 years coaching (UWO, PCG, FC, Team Canada, CCH), 6 cheering (UWO) Power Cheer Gym offers competitive teams and classes for cheer and tumbling for kids aged 5 through 18. Coaches make the difference … Submitted by CheerStrike We routinely hear from our athletes and parents alike that what makes CheerStrike so special is our coaches. Here are some of the things we’ve heard from our ‘happy customers’ … “My favourite coach is Aurora. She is always encouraging and positive. Without her help, I would have never gotten my back handspring! Cheer has been a positive sport and has helped me build confidence.

I've learned a lot about myself and what I can achieve.” – CheerStrike athlete “My girls have been blessed to work with all wonderful coaches, and to pick just one wouldn't be right. One thing that I love about the gym are the coaches, and I've said that from day one. They are all wonderful with the girls. So, my top five would be Peyton, Hailey, Deb, Michelle and Kelly. They all have their own unique strengths,

CheerStrike athletes not only share a love of cheer, but they also share a deep appreciation of their fantastic CheerStrike coaches!

and I respect them all. And so do the girls!” – CheerStrike parent “Nicole is my favourite coach because she has always had confidence in me and has helped me get over my fears. She is always telling me that I can do things even when I think that I can’t, which makes me feel good. Nicole is just the best coach, and I always look forward to my one-on-one sessions with her because after each one I feel better about improving my skills and about myself.” – CheerStrike athlete “Peyton is by far my favourite coach. She is supportive, loving, caring and so many more things that would take me forever to write. When I first came to cheer, I was scared, alone and had no skills. But Peyton changed everything. She put joy into practices, made everybody laugh, and pushed us to our limits. Without her I wouldn’t be where I am now! She is the best, and forever will be the best.” – CheerStrike athlete

Building confidence – one smile at a time! Submitted by The Little Gym of London The past year at The Little Gym was our best one yet! With 900 students on the roster, we got to know so many happy children and watch them build their confidence through their social, emotional, cognitive and physical skill growth. It’s so amazing to see their faces ‘BEAM’ when they arrive to classes weekly AND at the end of the year when they put on their show for the parents and receive their medals. Of course, that doesn’t mean that their growth and development has ended! Building confidence is most critical between the ages of 4 and 12, and it takes time to become ingrained in children and be part of their life! That’s why our program is long-term and flexible as we grow and develop along with them. We continue to challenge our students to build up perseverance, endurance, mental toughness, determination, tenacity, and a desire to learn. In other words, all the LIFELONG skills that they can take with them to school, the playground and eventually into adolescence and their first job! That’s why The Little Gym should always be the SPRINGBOARD for all of their life’s adventures. Our unique programs for children revolve around active play in a fun environment designed to provide a different context for learning. For babies, tod-

dlers, and preschoolers, these classes March Break & Summer, Parent’s Survival help establish active, healthy habits and Nights, and Birthdays too! foster social skills like listening and cowww.tlglondoncan.com operation; for older children, these programs complement and enhance the traditional school experience by helping children build confidence, manage anxiety and depression, and increase self-esteem and cognitive skills. Enrollment is ongoing, and you can join us anytime in a class that still has space. Tuition will be prorated for you! If this sounds like the program for you (which it is!), give us a call and let’s get you started today too! Programs include: Parent Child classes, Gymnastics, Dance, Sports, School Readiness, Camps The Little Gym of London prepares its students with the lifelong skills that will help them in school, over the holidays, on the playground, and into adolescence and their first job!

Students become the teachers Submitted by Family Karate It was a busy summer for the Competition Team members at Family Karate. In early August, the team had the opportunity to visit the Kilworth Children's Centre in Komoka to share their knowledge and demonstrate their skills for dozens of children aged 4 to 12. Some of our younger competition team members were actually younger than the children with whom they were working! But regardless of age, all of our team

members represented themselves and the team with a professional approach and eagerness. Some of the comments the coaches heard included how polite and thorough our team were as instructors. Our team is always ready for a challenge! On a bittersweet note, the team wishes good luck to one of our coaches as he heads off to expand his horizons in post-secondary education. Zach Drake

has been with the team since 2009, and he has been in a coaching role since 2015. This fall will see him start at the University of Ottawa, and the team will always look forward to his future visits. Zach's contributions to the team and dedication to helping team members reach their potential has been invaluable and will certainly be missed. Thank you, Zach!

Summer success and a new coach! Submitted by Forest City Diving Club Ending the 2016/2017 season on a high is always a great way to show success, and that’s exactly what happened this year with Forest City Diving Club’s athletes. All 13 National Level FCDC divers qualified to compete at the Speedo Jr. Development Nationals in July, and together they earned six medals (four Silver and two Bronze) and enjoyed many top-12 finishes in the country. The Club ranked 3rd in the Nation for the 13 and under age group, and 5th for the 14 to 18 age group. This was a significant improvement from last season’s 6th overall finish. Our Provincial level divers, meanwhile, attended their own Provincial Championship in May, bringing home four medals of their own (two Gold, one

Silver, and one Bronze). Team Ontario representation for the Canada Games comprised 50% of FCDC divers. Team Ontario won six medals out of eight events, with FCDC bringing home the Bronze medal in Men’s 3M Synchro. This coming season, FCDC will continue to strive for excellence. Our Pre-competitive group is happy to be welcoming new divers into our program as we continue to graduate divers to the competitive stream. As well, we are officially a two-coach team once again. Wing Hu, former Olympic coach of Venezuela, joined our Club in March and will assume active coaching duties in September. Our PLOUF LTD program is in full swing. George Bray Sports Association Submitted by George Bray Sports Association You must be here – to see it, to believe it! The George Bray Sports Association is about to start its 49th season. Wow, what an accomplishment! We are the only hockey league in the area for children and adults with special needs. We have grown to 18 teams and 245 players in total, and we have a volunteer base of over 60 people. We are a totally non-profit/volunteer organization, and all monies paid, donated or raised are used for the ongoing operations of hockey for our players and their families. We consist of two teams of Fundamentals, comprising of our returning and new players who can benefit from entry level instruction to the skills required for skating and eventually the skills of the game of Hockey. These two teams will join our other four Junior teams in January, totalling six teams in the age group 7 to 12 years old. Our Intermediate Division consists of six teams of 13 to 17-year-old players and another six teams in our Sr. division of players that are 18

and older; our oldest player last year was 41! We also have an Equipment Loaner program that allows our players to borrow pieces, partial sets, or complete sets of safe hockey equipment to wear while they participate; we also offer a monthly payment plan and financial assistance when needed. If you have a child that is on an IEP (Individual Education Program) in our local school boards and would like to learn to skate and play the game of hockey, we want to meet you. Our program will help you get started in our Fundamentals Division or our Hockey School and teach you the skills and drills that will allow you to enjoy the great game of hockey. More importantly than hockey itself, we will help you learn the life skills of Compassion, Teamwork, Equality, Respect, Friendship, and most of all FUN! We use the game of hockey to teach our players the life skills that will help them cope and achieve in the game of life. With our totally inclusive atmosphere and dedicated staff of coaches and volunteers, we will help your child become an

outgoing, confident person that will take those skills with them throughout the rest of their lives. If you are ready to join a fun team of understanding players and volunteers, please come out and give us a try – full money back refund if not satisfied, but we know you will be! All games are played on weekends at Glen Cairn Arena in London and run from October to April. Please see our website for further information, or contact Murray Howard at 519-200-8422 or murrayhoward@ execulink.com. We look forward to meeting you soon.

sportsfiles London Annihilators Wheelchair Rugby Submitted by London Annihilators Wheelchair Rugby This past May, the London Annihilators Wheelchair Rugby program fueled Ontario's sweep of both divisions at the Canadian National Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. In addition to this feat, two integral members of the Annihilators program were recognized in outstanding fashion. Players David Willsie and Garett Hickling will become the first ever rugby players to have their jerseys retired by the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association. The Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association, along with Scott Russell

and the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association, hosted a banquet upon completion of the National tournament. Both Willsie and Hickling were recognized based on two exemplary sport resumes. David Willsie spent 19 years competing as part of Canada's national wheelchair rugby team. Along the way, he won three Paralympic medals, four World Championship medals, numerous National tournament titles, and countless tournament MVP awards. Willsie has served as one of the most recognizable faces in the game, appearing on the Academy Award-nominated documentary ‘Murderball,’ and featured on programs such as ‘The Rick Mercer Report.’ Willsie owns and runs a lumber business with two brothers in his hometown. He has served as a player-coach and mentor for many young rugby athletes, and is in his first season as David Willsie and Garett Hickling became the first two rugby players to have their

assistant coach with Canada's national program. Garrett Hickling has been one of the best wheelchair rugby players in the world since the sport's inception. Known to all as ‘G’, Garrett won MVP honours at the first three World Championships ever celebrated by the sport. He has competed in four Paralympic Games (winning two silver medals and a bronze) and five World Championship tournaments (leading Canada to a gold, a silver, and two bronze medals). Like Willsie, Hickling has won multiple national titles with his home province of British Columbia and countless MVP honours at various competitions. Hickling was also featured in the ‘Murderball’ documentary, and he served as the flag bearer for Canada's Paralympic team at the 2012 opening ceremonies in London, England. Hickling recently moved to Ontario where he serves as the national program's development coach, mentoring and pushing the next generation of wheelchair rugby athletes to be their best.

House league champs crowned Submitted by London Minor Lacrosse Association London Blue Devils house league lacrosse wrapped up its season on June 24 with its annual Day of Champions event. Twenty teams, with athletes as young as four years old, participated in the event held at Kinsman Arena in London, Ontario. The London Blue Devils house league program is a two-month season that begins in mid-April. The program is divided into three components: A short evaluation period that allows coaches to create fair, competitive teams; an exhibition

season, where athletes better learn the game of lacrosse and develop their skills; and the regular season, which determines the team rankings in each division. These rankings are then used for the culminating Day of Champions event held at the end of June each year. Lacrosse is an exciting, fast-paced sport that develops many physical skills that are used in a wide variety of other sports. Because of its short season, lacrosse is also a fantastic cross-training activity. In fact, Hockey Canada recog-

nizes lacrosse as the number one sport to help hockey players get better (see: http://activeforlife.com/hockey-canadastop-6-off-ice-sports-and-activities/). If you think you might be interested in London Blue Devils house league lacrosse, we offer many Try Lacrosse clinics throughout the off-season. Be sure to visit our website, www.londonlacrosse. com, for more information on these clinics and to keep up to date on next season’s registration dates.

House league filled with fun Contributions by Andy Reid and photo by Forest City Image Centre It should come as no surprise that London Blue Devils house league box lacrosse is full of fun and skilled play. After all, the London Minor Lacrosse Association is a fantastic organization. And lacrosse? Well, it’s the fastest game on two feet! The Blue Devils house league consists of six divisions, ranging from Peanut to Bantam. The Peewee level (10 and 11-year-olds) usually has the largest group of athletes, and it’s a level that serves as a great preparation for the

kids to get ready for contact hockey. This year, there were four teams in the Peewee house league (for players born in 2005 and 2006), each consisting of 15 players apiece. “The first half of the season is a sixgame exhibition schedule that gives new players a chance to develop and get used to the flow of the game,” said Andy Reid, the director of the London Blue Devils house league program. “And the second half is the regular season, where teams play each other twice again and are then

ranked for the Day of Champions.” The Day of Champions is the playoff finale for each of the six divisions, and this year it was held June 24 at Kinsmen Arena. It’s a full day of games, and while every division was well-represented, the Peewees particularly packed a punch. Each team showed well. And while the Black Team went winless, they certainly showed a lot of heart, especially in their final game of the year, as they lost a closely-contested semi-final game, 9-6, against the White Team. Congrats to all players! Interested in getting involved with London Blue Devils lacrosse? Attend a TRY LACROSSE clinic for potential new players during the offseason. Equipment is provided for anyone interested. For more information, visit www.londonlacrosse.com. “It’s a growing sport,” said Reid, who has been affiliated in some way with Blue Devils lacrosse for five years. “It’s very physical, and it’s great for conditioning. Give us a try!”

Fresh start for franchise Submitted by the Komoka Kings and photo by Jake Jeffrey The Komoka Kings will have several returning players in the lineup when they open the GOJHL season in September. Captain Andrew Kim is back for his fourth and final year of junior hockey, while Wes Dobbin, Kyle Fisher and Brett Fisher all return after impressive rookie campaigns last year (the young trio combined for 48 goals and 126 points).

Forward Kyle Fisher’s official signing with Kings’ Assistant Coach Jason Williams

General Manager Roop Chanderdat says experience goes a long way in this league. “It's great to have so many guys back,” Chanderdat said. “A lot of them were rookies last year, so they'll be able to build on what they learned and now have a year of junior hockey under their belt.” This season will be the first in Komoka for the franchise, after nearly a decade in Forest as the Lambton Shores Predators. Chanderdat says the players and staff are both looking forward to a fresh start. “We've settled in nicely to the new facility,” he said. “It's a shorter commute for a lot of the players, and we can already feel the buzz about the upcoming season in the Komoka community.” The Kings defense will welcome back Colin McLean and Will Johnston, while the team also acquired Spencer Lapointe from the St. Thomas Stars during the offseason. Tyler McLean will join the team

full-time after playing 19 games last season as a call-up. New faces include Joel Mazzilli, a Hamilton Bulldogs prospect and London Jr. Knights standout, as well as Noah Hamilton and Matt Mellick. Hamilton spent last season with the PJHL's North Middlesex Stars, while Mellick played with the London Jr. Knights Major Midget team. Stanley Cup winner Jason Williams joins the Kings’ staff as an Associate Coach, bringing with him 17 seasons of pro hockey experience, including 455 games as an NHL player. Former OHLer Dave Mcdonald has been added as the team’s Goaltending Coach. The pair join Head Coach Brian Dobbin, and Assistants Jason Stacey and Jake Jeffrey. Home games for the Kings will be 7:15 p.m. on Saturday nights, with the home opener scheduled for September 23 against the Sarnia Legionnaires.

A perfect partnership 355 WELLINGTON ST @ GOODLIFE

By SportsXpress Team In a lot of ways, the two-decade partnership between Spartan Nutrition and Goodlife Fitness makes perfect sense. After all, both have been in business in London for decades. And they’re both geared towards the same goals: healthy living through exercise and nutrition. Now, the two entities even share some space together. Last December, Spartan Nutrition opened a shake bar inside the Goodlife Citi Plaza location. And gym goers downtown can now get both their exercise and supplementation in the same space. The bar sells protein shakes, supplements, organic fair-trade coffee, and also includes a juice bar.

It’s a mutually beneficial relationship. Goodlife, the largest fitness chain in Canada, has always had a good relationship with Spartan, who has supported gym events in the past. Aaron Brady, the owner of Spartan Nutrition, which has five locations in London and is the official supplement partner of the London Knights and the London Lightning, is passionate about helping Londoners achieve their health, fitness, and athletic goals. That’s why Spartan Nutrition was created, and it continues to be the driving force for Brady today. Spartan employs more than

Now, those clients at the Goodlife Citi Plaza location are able to access those services before they even leave the building. It’s a win-win for all involved.

Women to host ’17-’18 nationals Submitted by Western Mustangs Athletics The route to claim The Golden Path trophy begins and ends at Thompson Arena this season, as the Western Mustangs hit the ice this October as the host of the 2018 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship. While Western’s regular season schedule kicks off on the road against Nipissing on October 20, the Mustangs know that they’ll wrap up their season on home ice, with the 2018 national championship set for Thompson Arena from March 15-18. After losing a large number of players

to graduation after the 2015-16 season, the majority of last year’s squad is back once again this year ready to capture the second national title in program history. Captain Emma Pearson, a member of the first national championship squad back in 2014-15, is back to lead the team once again as she heads into her final season in purple and white. She’ll be joined the majority of the defence corps from last season, as well as newcomers Beatrice Dufour and Olivia Kariunas. The team’s other new recruit will be in the crease, with goaltender Carmen Lasis

joining the squad. The sister of defenceman Anthea Lasis, Carmen has both size and athleticism, and will bring those skills and a championship history to the roster this season. Up front, the Mustangs will need to adjust for the departure of leading scorer Lyndsay Kirkham. However, the Mustangs’ next three highest scorers, April Clark, Evra Levesque and Amanda Pereira, are all back and looking to build on their momentum from last season. A trip of a lifetime Contributions from Fanshawe College Athletics Matt Catalano got the opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience in August, and the 26-year-old seized it. The Fanshawe student, and member of the college’s Falcons soccer team, was invited to play on Matt Catalano, a London native and member of the U Sports the Fanshawe Falcons men’s soccer team, was chosen to play on Canada’s U Sports entry into Canadian the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei City, entry into Chinese Taipei

the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei (from Aug. 19-30). It’s the second-largest multi-sport event in the world, and Catalano jumped at the opportunity. But it came with a cost: $3,500. Impressively, the youngster was able to round up the necessary funds with the help of many people, including his family, his girlfriend, the Elgin Middlesex Soccer Association (EMSA), Ian Campbell of FC LONDON (whom Catalano played for in the past), and some local businesses. A London native and former Catholic Central grad, Catalano has played the beautiful game his whole life. At

Fanshawe, the student-athlete was named Rookie of the Year as well as an OCAA League All-Star (as a defender) in his first season with the Falcons, a team that ranked as high as fourth in the province last season. He won the 2012 PDL Championship with FC LONDON, won five Ontario Cups at the Senior Level (with both Marconi and AEK) and two National Championships with Marconi Men's Premier (in 2014 and 2015). He is currently the coach of the Marconi U9 Girls team. But his coaching duties (and his full-time job) had to take a backseat in August, as Catalano took a month off for pre-tournament training in Vancouver for 12 days and then the Summer Universiade event from Aug. 19-30. An opportunity of a lifetime, for sure.

Watch for the Express this fall Submitted by St. Thomas Express Volleyball Club Since 2011, the city of St. Thomas and Elgin County has offered volleyball at the Grassroots and House League levels with SPIKES St. Thomas. More than 400 little ‘SPIKERS’ have learned not only the beautiful game of volleyball, but important life skills as well. In 2016, SPIKES St. Thomas partnered with the Forest City Volleyball Club (FCVC) to launch its first ever competitive program: Forest City Express. That partnership culminated in a very successful U14 Girls’ program (and a silver medal at the Ontario Provincial Championships for the U13 Girls).

“We’re very thankful to the members of the FCVC for their support,” said Dennis Dlouhy, St. Thomas Volleyball club president. “But St. Thomas is a proud community, and we wanted a volleyball identity of its own.” Starting in September of 2017, the St. Thomas Express Volleyball Club (aka ExpressVC) will continue to teach two simple things: Joy and Technique. But now, in addition to its Grassroots and House League programs, it will be expanding its competitive offerings to U12, U13, U14 and U15 girls as well as U13 and 14 boys.

“This is an exciting expansion for our club – and for volleyball in St. Thomas,” said Dlouhy. Registration is now open, and interested families are encouraged to visit our website at www.Expressvc.ca to choose a program that is right for them. Come and join the Express!
