Training V-ballers in the summer By Tania Admans for BodyWorx Summer is ramping up, and with 3 tournaments already under their belts, BodyWorx beach volleyball athletes are well into their season. We’re running beach clinics Tuesdays and Thursdays on the beaches, and holding ‘in-gym’ sessions for strength and conditioning Monday and Wednesdays. We tailor the intensity depending on recent or upcoming events

and the condition of the athletes as the season progresses. What you can be sure of is reaching greater heights, increasing verticals, speed improvement for lateral movement and quick decisions in gameplay, and overall strength and power. Whether you’re a court or beach player (or both), training off and on season is beneficial. Our programs are group-based, but with small enough sizes to be able to challenge each athlete for maximum results. On the beach, we’re training strategy, core fundamentals and mental acuity. This is a game of twos, after all … only you and your partner to rely on. The mental part of the game is one of the most important – and maybe most under recognized – aspect of the sport. While actual volleyball skills are BodyWorx has been busy this summer training beach volleyball (and indoor) athletes, through keyed on, develbeach clinics on the court and strength and conditioning sessions in the gym

oped and improved, the mental game and partnerships are also worked on in each and every practice. Even in the gym! For our indoor players, there’s nothing better than a little cross Tania Admans training. Defensive skills (passing, reading, transitioning) are among some of the skills developed. From a physical training perspective, the uneven and challenging nature of sand alone trains for stronger ankles, knees, hips and, ultimately, vertical! Baseball back in full swing Submitted by Eager Beaver Baseball Association On June 2, if you stopped by Mornington Park, you witnessed one of the busiest days of baseball in the City of London. For the Eager Beaver Baseball Association, it was Opening Day – with over 350 kids coming through the park. Kids as young as 4 years old up to 13

all took the field that day. It was a busy event, and there was an excitement in the air. The concession stand was open, and burgers and hot dogs were served. EBBA sold old gear at cheap prices to clear out their storage and help families looking for a deal. Sports One Photography set up a tent and was on hand to take team photos of all the teams, and any parent interested was able to get an individual photo of their child and order some baseball photo keepsakes. It was the kind of community gathering that you might expect to see Photo by Gina Arsenault - Little sluggers pose for their team photo in Pleasantville

Movie City – but it happened right here in London! The day marked the start of the baseball season for the kids. There will be games or practices at Mornington Park almost every day of the week for the next two months, as well as countless games throughout the city featuring EBBA teams. The memories created this summer will last a lifetime for the children. If you were not a part of Opening Day this year, we hope to see you out there next season! EBBA runs programs from Little Sluggers (4 & 5-year-olds) to Juniors (19 to 22-year-olds). For more information on EBBA, including schedules, please visit our website

Chuggers continue to improve

Contributions by Chris Pace They’re a softball team that is aptly named. The ‘Chuggers,’ after all, have worked very hard the last few years to improve their skills and, as a result, enjoy better results on the diamond. In fact, in a few shorts seasons they have drastically climbed their way up the standings. “We saw what made successful teams good, and we recruited some new players and worked very hard to climb from last place in 2016 to an ‘A’ division team with only one loss all year at Slo-Pitch City in Dorchester,” says Chris Pace, an original member of the Chuggers. The team first formed in 2015, playing slo-pitch in the Forest City Sport and Social Club (FCSSC) 3-pitch league. Looking for a bigger challenge, they moved to the Co-Ed league at Dreamers the following year. They currently play on Friday nights in Dorchester. “A lot of us are lifelong friends who have played sports together since we were very young,” says Pace. “Some

But he’s confident they can get there. And on the way, he’s certain there will be a lot of fun. Diamond camps on deck Submitted by Centrefield Sports The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and summer is finally upon us! For many of our teams, players and regular visitors, the summer months are a chance to get outside and on the diamond, the pitch, the gridiron, and more! While our hours at Centrefield Sports are reduced for the months of June, July and August, so too are our rates, and we are now officially into our summer prices, with costs from the winter all slashed in half or more to accommodate your indoor needs whenever possible. Feel free to give us a call when you want to get ready before your next tournament, or just drop by during our open hours and we will find

you a spot! Our instructors are also heading outdoors, with former major leaguers, Olympians and professional baseball players leading three different camps throughout the summer at the Byron Optimist Complex. There is still room to sign up your young player, so head to our website or give us a call so we can fit them in! Our first outdoor summer camp will run from July 9 to 13, the second from July 30 to August 3, and the final camp (a four-day event) from August 13 to 16. We have full-day, full-week, single day, and half-day options to accommodate your

summer schedule. With the Great Lake Canadians program - one that calls its indoor home Centrefield Sports - also hitting the diamonds and taking its talents outside, the organization is proud to announce that two of its players were selected in Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft in early June. Great Lake graduate Michael Brettell was selected in the 15th round by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Central Michigan University, and the right-hander is off to begin his professional career with the Johnson City Cardinals. Current Canadians hurler Eric Cerantola was chosen in the 30th round by the Tampa Bay Rays and will fulfill his commitment to Mississippi State University. The two GLC players were among just 19 Canadians selected in this year’s draft. Amid the summer excitement, don’t forget to plan your off-season training early, and reach out to our staff at Centrefield regarding rentals. The facility will fill up incredibly quickly through the fall and winter months, and we would like to accommodate your needs! It’s never too early to get your reservations in, and we look forward to having you!

A game for all ages Submitted by London Mens Baseball League Crack! Snap! Ouch! No, you’re not hearing the sound of ball hitting a bat. You’re hearing the sentiment of most of our ‘old-timers’ the day after the start of the new ball season. The 2018 LMBL season is now in full swing, and most of the rust has fallen off. We had an exciting start to the year, and two teams in the A Division started out the season with impressive undefeated streaks, including the Werewolves and the Rays, who showed that an offseason coaching change hasn’t hurt their chances at making a championship run. The Blue Jays appear to be the team to

beat in the B division, as they try to work their way back into the A Division. It won’t be easy, though, and they have several challengers nipping at their heels this season – including the 2017 B Division champion Orioles, who are looking to retain their title trophy. If you’re looking to follow the standings, check out www.lmblbaseball.ca. All the glorious stats will be there, as well, including a record of the first ever triple hit by our illustrious Vice President (although some say it may have been friendly scorekeeping!).

The London Mens Baseball League is an ‘over 30’ mens league based in London, Ontario (baseball, not softball or slo-pitch!). We play most games on Sundays, from May to September, at locations including Labatt Park, Dan Pulham Field, Byron, and Dorchester. Our league ranges in age from 30 to 80

Nationals coming to St. Thomas Submitted by LDBA Baseball Some of Canada’s best junior baseball players will be in St. Thomas this August as the St. Thomas Minor Baseball Association plays host to the 2018 TD 21U National Baseball Championships. The prestigious event will see 19, 20, and 21-year-old players competing for provincial teams in an effort to be crowned national champions. Ten teams will take part in the tournament (Aug. 15-19), with games being played at Cardinal Field and Emslie Field (both in St Thomas). The host team will be the St. Thomas Tomcats. Rounding out the teams will be two representatives from Ontario and single teams from Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland/Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Tournament Chair Derek Brooks says he’s excited to host the event. “To be awarded this event by Baseball Canada is amazing,” he said. “The London area has hosted many national events in

the past, but this will be the first for the city of St. Thomas.” Brooks adds that “the facilities are topnotch in the city with brand new Cardinal Field and historic Emslie Field.” Cardinal Field was constructed in 2017 with full lights, scoreboard, bullpen area, and completely fenced in with exact dimensions as the Rogers Centre. Emslie Field, meanwhile, is the crown jewel of the baseball facilities in the city and boasts being 16th on Canada’s list of favourite ball parks. The park has recently undergone a major upgrade with brand new fencing being installed for the 2018 season. “The partnership between St. Thomas Minor Baseball and the City of St. Thomas is very strong,” says Brooks, “and we work exceptionally well together, which allows events such as this to come to the city.” The host St. Thomas Tomcats are the elite junior team of the London and District Baseball Association. Players come from

Former St. Thomas Cardinal players Matthew Brooks, Michael Mommersteeg, Justin McDonald, Matthew Thomson, Josh Hare, and Zack Banks make up a third of the players on the team. The Tomcats have been successful two of the last three years at the Nationals, winning bronze in 2015 and 2017. They have also been provincial silver medalists in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Volunteer spots are available for the event, which include scorekeeper, electronic scorekeeper, scoreboard and music operations, pitch counts, clothing/ souvenir sales, and gate admissions. If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please email Jim Ewart at cardinalscoach2@gmail.com. “This event would not be possible without the generous support of our many corporate sponsors of the event,” Brooks added. “There are over 50 local businesses and organizations that have gotten behind this local event, which is truly amazing.” The event kicks off on Wednesday Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. with a home run derby at Emslie Field. Games start Thursday Aug. 16 with the opening ceremony at Emslie Field at 6 p.m. Games continue Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with the bronze medal game Sunday at 4 p.m. and the gold medal game being played at Emslie Field at 8 p.m. For a full schedule of games, please visit www.stthomasminorbaseball.com and select the link to the 21U Nationals.

Tincaps on a tournament tear Contributions by Tim Bonello The London West Tincaps Major Mosquito team (U11) continued their dominance in June at the Greater Niagara Baseball tournament (June 15-17) in Niagara Falls, a tournament that included some of the best teams in the province. The defending provincial OBA champion Tincaps played extremely well throughout the tournament, winning each of their games in convincing fashion – including a win against a previously unbeaten Niagara Falls team in the round-robin.

London West Tincaps Major Mosquito Team - Front row (left to right): Jordie Howes, Nick Petruzella. Middle row: Caden Welsby, Liam Thompson, Ben Adamson, Nolan MacKay, Tyler Pais, Myles Adamson, Charlie Weir, Marcus Bonello, Jackson McKenzie, Matt Elston Newman. Back row (coaches): Jeff Petruzella, Chuck Roberts, Justin Welsby, Tim Bonello

In the semi-finals, the Tincaps played a hard-fought game against the Kitchener Panthers, but prevailed 9-6 behind some strong hitting. In the championship game, the London team led throughout, thanks to strong pitching from Ben Adamson and Marcus Bonello, and cruised to an 8-2 victory. Marcus Bonello was named the Finals MVP for his strong pitching, and Nick Petruzella was named tournament MVP for his tenacious baserunning and great play in the field. All 12 players contributed to the tournament win, and the coaches are extremely proud of the way the kids played on the field – and the way they conducted themselves. The Tincaps have now won four straight tournaments dating back to last year, and the team looks to continue their strong run throughout the summer.

Successful start to soccer season Submitted by FC LONDON and photos by Matt Hiscox Photography FC LONDON and London TFC have stepped it up a notch in 2018 with solid starts across the board – right from U8 all the way to League1. Players such as Kaila Novak, Dante Carraro, and Emaly Martin have taken the next steps in their soccer careers and are catching the eyes of coaches across the country. “With the recent announcement about Canada hosting the World Cup in 2026, everyone is buzzing with excitement about what this could mean for some of our academy players,” says FC LONDON founder Ian Campbell. “These players have a good shot at playing against the best in the world.” A recent addition to the men’s team is Ethan Gopaul, an 18-year-old Londoner

FC LONDON CEO Ian Campbell poses with the League1, MLS and PDL Championship trophies

who has spent the last few years playing with the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy. He made an immediate impact in his first outing, helping set up two goals. “Ethan is quick,” says Michael Marcoccia, FC LONDON’s Men’s head coach. “Combine that with his ability to shoot and cross with both feet and we’re looking forward to his talent on the field and to helping him achieve his football goals.” Youth team programs run by London TFC Academy got off to a great start, with 18 boys and girls teams competing across the province. “Having coached in Portugal and Brazil, it’s great to see the talent and enthusiasm in this country, and especially in London,” says Youth Technical Director

Paulo Sousa. “I think there must be something in the water here, as we continue to show the big teams in Toronto some beautiful football.” The FC LONDON Women’s team started their 2018 championship run with an undefeated streak … a record they’d like to carry on until the end of the year. “Our U21 program from last year has already shown its value with several women stepping up this year into starting roles,” says Marcoccia. “Jade [Kovacevic] is back to her scoring ways, showing why she is a rare talent in the Canadian game.” “With the World Cup underway,” says Campbell, “fans are in for a great summer of soccer – both on and off the field.”

It’s all about teamwork Contributions by Miguel Paiva It’s all about teamwork for LAC Curinga, the Under 15 Girls soccer team that plays in the EMDSL (Tier 2 division). Representing the London Athletic Canadian Futbol Club, the girls support each other – both on and off the pitch – to help make each other better. And, of course, they have a lot of fun in the process. Head coach Miguel Paiva has been at the helm of the group for the last two seasons, and some of the LAC Curinga girls played for him when he coached house league before that. His goals for the team are focused on development, effort, and respect. In other words, Paiva says, “Have fun and learn from your mistakes to progress and build meaningful relationships. And play as hard as you can and respect not only yourself and your teammates, but also your opponents.” The girls placed third in the indoor sea-

son, and they’ve been busy this summer competing in the EMDSL (their home field is the Curinga Club at 17 Clarke Road in London. “These girls like to have fun,” says Paiva, who has been coaching the sport for seven years and continues to play

himself at the Masters level. “They support each other and play as a team.” One of the highlights off the pitch this summer came in June, when the team traveled to Hamilton to watch the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team take on Germany at Tim Horton’s Field.

Himaras headed for big things Contributions by Bill Himaras At a very young age, Eleias Himaras had a ball at his feet. Whether kicking it around or just pushing it with his feet down the hall, he just had to have that ball with him at all times. Eleias started playing recreational soccer when he was 5 years old with NorWest. At age 7, he began playing competitive for an U8 team, London Alliance. Though the team only lasted for a year, it was Eleias’s stepping stone into a new chapter of his

soccer life in which he would spend the next five years with the Portuguese Fury of London.

Garrincha, and a few years later got the opportunity to play for the remarkable coach). Garrincha contributed greatly to Eleias’s development and successes. He brought out and cultivated Eleias’s footwork skills, which continue to give him a great advantage on the pitch. Another remarkable individual, Peter Riccobon, worked with Eleias to shape his goalkeeping skills, and Eleias has spent the past five years training with Peter as a goalkeeper. Peter initially trained Eleias for his first world cup tournament in Portugal (the Mundialito) in 2013. The most recent chapter in Eleias’s soccer development began this past February when he attended a two-week tryout with the Toronto FC Academy U16 Team. At the end of the two weeks, he was made an offer by TFC, and he accepted. Eleias transferred schools and made the move to Toronto within a matter of days. Eleias has since attended the Dr. Pepper Dallas Cup tournament in Dallas, Texas, where he was selected to join an All-Star team. That team will travel to Europe this August, visiting Ajax FC in Amsterdam and the Royal Belgium Football Federation in Belgium. He will also attend a showcase tournament in San Diego, California this summer.

Strong performances in pool Submitted by Middlesex Swimming he Middlesex Swimming Club was busy in June – both at swimming meets and water polo events. In fact, athletes from both disciplines were in action the same weekend (June 7-10), and both enjoyed successful performances in the pool. At the Western Region Swimming Championships held June 7-10 at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex in Brantford, Middlesex swimmers captured several medals throughout the weekend while competing against 29 other teams from across southwestern Ontario. Kathryn Ivanov led the charge, winning gold in the 50m breaststroke while narrowly missing the Canadian National Trials time standard. Other gold medal winners included Evan MacArthur, Marissa Mann, Quinn Nolan, and Cam Teasdale. Other Middlesex swimmers to medal included Hayden Aziz, Holly Brown, Brady Fletcher, Justin Gmehlin, Bronwyn MacLeod, Declan Nolan, Isaac Russell, and Dylan Van Nes. A total of 29 Middlesex swimmers competed at the event. Meanwhile, at the U12 Water Polo Provincial Championships at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo June 8-10, the Middlesex Water Polo team competed amongst 10 teams from across Ontario and finished the weekend with an exciting game, their fifth of the tournament, against the Maverick Colts. National success and provincial pride Submitted by Forest City Diving Club This summer, London is hosting the 2018 Ontario Summer Games (August 3-5), and the city is welcoming more than 3,500 top young athletes in 21 different sports. FCDC is thrilled that our home pool is serving as a venue for the Games. And with stellar performances during the season, FCDC has more than 10 athletes who met the standard to compete in the Games – especially impressive given

there are only 74 invites. In competition in June, seven FCDC divers traveled to Winnipeg, MB to compete at the Speedo Jr. Elite Nationals, including Jaime Dutz, Anika Holland, Faith Zacharias, Camryn Hughes, Joshua Inglis, Nathan Marshall, Julia Parybak and Katelyn Fung. They came home with 11 top-12 finishes, and their hard work (and the hard work of their coaches, Wing Yun Hu and Luda Zakharenko) paid off as FCDC finished 3rd in Canada. In July, our youngest group (11 and under) is competing in their own Speedo Jr. Development Nationals in Toronto. Many of our divers receive university scholarships to the U.S. Next September, Anika Holland will move on to university of Louisville, Kentucky on a diving scholarship to compete in the NCAA Division I. We wish her all the best! We had 12 Aspire Divers participate in the Aspire Provincial Championships in Windsor. For some of them, it was their first time competing at such a large venue. They had very good standings and all enjoyed a These are exciting times for the Forest City Diving Club, who had 11 top-12 finishes at the Speedo Jr. Elite Nationals and will host (and be represented by more than 10 athletes of their own) the 2018 great experience.

Big start for Kellett Submitted by London Junior Golf Development Centre For one local golfer, Cam Kellett, the 2018 golf season started as one of the most memorable ever for a player from the London area. Over the off-season, Cam spent time working on his skills at Performance Golf London under the guidance of Coach Brian Gallant, a PGA Professional. He also traveled to Florida for two months to practice and play some tough golf courses to hone his game. “I realized I needed more patience and to follow the process,” Kellett said. “I was able to put in the technical work in Florida. And when I returned, I trusted the work so I could allow myself to score low and not worry about anything else.” In April, Cam signed a golf scholarship with Young Harris College in northeast Georgia, where he will study Business Administration. Then, this happened: Event #1 – Qualifier for Golf Ontario’s Junior Boys Spring Classic – score of 73

= WIN Event #2 – Qualifier for Golf Ontario’s Men’s Amateur – 74 = WIN to gain the special exception for the championship in July at St. Thomas Golf & Country Club. Event #3 – Qualifier for Golf Ontario’s Men’s Match Play – 73, 6th Event #4 – Golf Ontario’s Junior Boys Spring Classic – opened with 77 and 72; then fired a tournament low round of 6-under 66 in the final round to finish one shot out of a playoff for 1st. Cam’s thoughts: “Never count yourself out. Patience is extremely bliss in golf. There is nobody who can get in the way of you if you are patient.” Event #5 – Golf Canada’s Future Links Ontario Championship – opened with two consecutive rounds of 3-under 68 for a one-shot lead; however, a final round of 77 led to a second-place finish. Cam’s thoughts: “Never get ahead of yourself. Keep picking smart targets. Play

your own game rather than forcing. Other than that, it was a great Cam Kellett, a local golfer, had a hugely week of golf.” successful start to the 2018 golf season Event #6 – Golf Canada’s Future Links Quebec Championship – opened with 74, 73 and with a final round of 1-under 71, for another finish one shot out of a playoff. Cam’s thoughts: “Having the ability to adjust your game to play to the strengths that week was key. Also, it was great to find a way to stay in contention without having my best game.”

Swinging for a cure Contributions by Cheriss Marson and photos by Jarrett Spriet, snapd London The 18th annual Lexus of London Golf Classic was a fantastic success. Held in support of prostate cancer research at London Health Sciences Centre, the event, which was held on Monday, June 25 at the prestigious Oaks Golf and Country Club, continued to show why it’s one of the most successful charity golf events in southwestern Ontario. The tournament featured 131 participating teams. Celebrities – local and otherwise – included Brett Cleverdon, Candice Olson, and Nick Paparella, and the day included several on-course activities for some impressive prizes – a travel voucher for $5,000, a 2018 HarleyDavidson, a 2018 Lexus NX 300, and a trip for two to the Masters, to name just a few. At the annual Gala, on the Sunday night (June 24), more than 500 people attended, and the highest auction item was a Lexus lease for a year which sold

for over $8,000. In other words, it was another successful event for a great cause, and added to the more than $1.4 million that was raised in the first 17 tournaments for prostate cancer research.

Ninth for Shepherd in opener

Contributions by Brittany Fitchett (driven4communications) It was a day of catch-up for Pete Shepherd III in his first start of the 2018 season at Jukasa Motor Speedway in mid-June, and when the dust settled the veteran driver collected a ninth-place finish. It was a strong finish considering that Shepherd wasn’t able to get the speed out of the car early on in practice and struggled with that throughout the day. “We battled a loose car on entry dur-

ing practice, and we could never really make adjustments to help it throughout the day,” Shepherd said. “Our Team did a great job making the car better in the centre of the corner and on exit, but the entry is so important here, and I couldn’t drive the car in hard enough into the corner to carry speed through on either end.” Shepherd was able to find some speed in qualifying, where he picked up a couple of tenths and settled for 10th on the grid. He was hopeful that the car would come around once tire wear became a factor in the 200-lap event, and in fact Shepherd’s #79 National Exhaust/VRX eSports Ford made up ground and managed to climb to 7th position before the first of two In his 2018 season debut, Pete Shepherd III finished in ninth place in the Rankin 200 completion yellows. at Jukasa Motor Speedway in mid-June

Crew Chief Ray McCaughey and Pete III agreed that they would stay out and save all four tires for the final 50 lap shootout. When the race resumed Shepherd was able to hold his position until the teams with fresh inside tires made their moves, shuffling him outside of the top 5. Pete was able to find his rhythm and cruise inside the top 10 until the final competition caution. “It wasn’t the result we were looking for … but we completed all 200 laps without taking any damage, so we can focus on making it faster for the next show,” Shepherd said. “I can’t thank my sponsors enough for getting me back on track, including National Exhaust Systems Inc., as well as VRX Simulators and VRX ESports. Sweat and Smiles By Scot Bowman for Family Karate The Family Karate Competition Team has continued to impress me with their enthusiasm and effort in achieving their goals and aspiring to hone their skills. As a coach, I see tremendous value in the intrinsic motivation that these students display. They recognize the necessity of sacrifice – the voluntary willingness to work hard in order to actualize

their potential. Their sweat (and smiles) during practice are the physical manifestations of that sacrifice – followed by the improvements in speed, strength, and skill that I see as the year progresses. All their hard work has led to two team members, Kaleb and Athena, earning the honour to compete in the WKC National Championships in Ottawa this year. Both were in pursuit of representing Canada on the international stage in Ireland, and both have qualified in their sparring divisions. I am confident that they will continue to Family Karate is producing successful athletes – and people – who are making a train with intensity and passion difference in the community

and represent both Canada and Family Karate with respect and dignity. One of the highlights for the Family Karate team this summer is participating in the London Brain Tumor Walk in Victoria Park (held June 10. These events give the team an opportunity to engage with the community, strengthen their team cohesion, and build confidence in their individual skills. We strive to create positive community leaders at Family Karate, and this year’s competition team is excelling in their community involvement. Kudos, team!

Riding for First Responders Contributions by Tanya Companion and photos by Metcalfe Photography It’s a great question: ‘First Responders are there to help people … But who is there to help THEM?’ That’s a tagline for the Medics for Mental Health bike ride, which will hold its third annual event on September 8, 2018 (8:30am start time). The goals of the ride, which happens around Oxford County and includes a 50km and a 100km route, are to raise awareness of the importance of the mental health

among first responders, as well as to raise money for support programs for First Responders. The proceeds from the 2018 event will be going to Tema Conter Memorial Trust’s ‘Peer Support and Family Assistance Program.’ Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $30,000 to help support the mental health of first responders across Canada. Mental health is a vital issue among first responders, who regularly find themselves in situations that can result in mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And too many first responders, tragically, are dying by suicide. The third annual Medics for Mental Health bike ride, which will be held September 8, 2018, is all about raising The Tema Conter awareness of mental health issues (including PTSD) among First Responders, as well as raising money for mental health support services. created with the help of Wounded Warriors Canada to help give money to First Responders, Military Personnel and their family members when they require financial assistance to help pay for psychologists and psychotherapists. Individuals can qualify for $1,000 in funding. All riders are welcome to the 2018 Medics for Mental Health event (you don’t need to be a first responder!). The new route this year will see riders travel from Woodstock to Ingersoll, through Embro and back to Woodstock. The registration fee is $65. Though participants are not required to collect donations, they are certainly encouraged! Those who raise $100 in donations will receive a cycling jersey (and there are prizes for the top three fundraisers).

Scholarship and Warriors Submitted by Olympic Karate This year’s graduating class at Olympic Karate will be moving on to university soon, and many of them are our impressive Black Belts. In keeping with our traditions and the success of other graduating Black Belts from Olympic Karate, we would like to feature three of our graduates. Alex Fediw, Nikola Koroman, and Aryan Taktazi each started at age 4 in our Little Dragons Program 14 years ago, and they are now moving on to university in programs of their choice. Alex has been

accepted by the University of Waterloo for Engineering, while Nikola (Business) and Aryan (Health Science) have both been accepted by Western University here in London. Each of these young men have also qualified for scholarships to help pay for their educations by maintaining superior grades in high school. Those of us at Olympic Karate who have worked with Alex, Nikola, and Aryan are very proud of their hard work and focus. They have set and achieved a major goal in life,

A new award has been created to recognize outstanding contributions to FCVC over the more than quarter-century of the club: membership in the FCVC Hall of Fame. There was no doubt who the first inductee would be, as Vaughan Peckham, the founder and driving force behind FCVC - and London volleyball influencer at every level - was recognized for his lifelong dedication to youth and sports. With family and friends gathered to celebrate this achievement, various speakers rose to recognize the immeasurable contributions that Coach Peck has made over the past 40+ years to volleyball in London – at the high-school, university, and club level. The award also coincides with Vaughan's induction into the OVA Hall of Fame, in the Builder category. As Vaughan takes a step into retirement from volleyball, his influence will continue to be felt through the many former players who carry on in his coaching and volunteering footsteps. Congratulations, and thank you for everything, Peck!

Never too late to start! Submitted by Power Cheer Gym At Power Cheer Gym, we are often asked, “Is it too late” for my daughter/ son to start cheerleading? The answer is, “Almost never.” And here are a few scenarios: 1. We missed the tryouts -- can we still find a place on a team and register? Answer: YES – absolutely. We hold ‘tryouts’ in the spring and again in September as a general call to get athletes interested, enrolled and started on teams and classes, but the reality is that we place athletes on teams ALL year long. Tryouts are actually just a group evaluation session and we will always arrange a time to fit in individuals who contact us throughout the summer. 2. My daughter/son is no longer involved in gymnastics. Is it too late for her to start cheerleading? Answer: No – cheerleading is often the next sport or follow-up sport for kids who have left gymnastics (and acro-dance). The best part is that their gym training

will carry over very well, and they almost always enter cheerleading with well-developed skills, strength and body awareness. We loooove ex-gymnasts, and they loooove the team atmosphere. 3. I am hoping to cheer at university, but my high school doesn’t have a cheerleading team. Is it too late to start, and what are my chances? Answer – Probably very good – but you need to start now. The reality is that there are very few high school cheer teams left in Ontario (and almost none in the London region). A high school student can absolutely begin their cheerleading even at the age of 14-16 and, given the right environment, they can reasonably expect to eventually earn a spot on a collegiate squad. The Power Cheer Gym is home to three of the strongest collegiate cheer programs in the nation (Western University Coed and All-Girl, and the Fanshawe College Black Falcons). And of the close

Similarly, of the 27 members of the Canadian National Coed team that won a bronze medal at the World Championships in April, only six members had cheered before they were in high school. (Note: this team trained exclusively at the Power Cheer Gym and had 10 members from the Western squad). Clearly, it is never too late to start cheerleading! Why Dance? By Richelle Hirlehey You have many options when choosing activities for your child to participate in. So, many might ask, ‘Why should I choose dance?’ Well, we can tell you – without a doubt – that dance has many positive effects on children and adults of all ages. Like with all physical activity, dance is a means of exercise, and with participation in any type of physical activity, endorphins (chemicals that produce a positive feeling and reduce the perception of pain) are released into the body and brain, which not only make us feel good but also benefit our ability to push ourselves to work a little harder, stretch a little further, and move a little longer. Additionally, dance provides us with an outlet to express emotions as we explore various types of dance. Ballet, the most traditional and disciplined of dance forms, requires focus and agility but also invites an element of discipline and a mindset that allows all learners to increase body awareness and often elicit emotions stirred from the music. There are many other dance forms in which to engage, and they range from easy to challenging (but always fun!), like hip-hop and jazz dance, which are fast-paced and in which the styles can vary from week to week, and from class to class. Champions in the community Contributions by Preferred Insurance On November 30th more than 500 people attended the second annual Insurance Business Canada Awards Gala. This is a black tie event, held at the Liberty Grand in Toronto where London’s own Preferred Insurance was named winner of the CNA Canada Award for Outstanding Philanthropy and Community Service. This award, is open to any company within the insurance industry that celebrates the outstanding contribution of time, leadership and financial support within their community and set new benchmarks of excellence in the acts of giving and volunteering. “This is a tremendous honor,” said

Peter Carr, Partner and VP of Sales at Preferred Insurance Group. “We’ve been very active within the communities we have served for many years. We don’t do it for rewards or business gain. We do it because we care about the people in the communities we serve”. Preferred Insurance was active long before the corporate world identified community and philanthropy work as a strategic objective. They are truly a community champion! In the past year Preferred Insurance has supported 35 community and charitable causes and raised over $119,300. Considering they are a team of 27 people, that works out to an impressive $4,418 raised per employee. The largest charitable affair that the company supports (and hosts) is the annual “Turkey Bowl Event”. This event raises money for Childcan, a London based organization that provides real help both financially and emotionally for families battling with childhood cancer. Since the event turned into a fundraiser six years ago, the amount raised has surpassed $250,000. The purpose of the program is to raise awareness and collect back to school supplies for less fortunate families. Team Preferred’s five year total for the campaign is 462 loaded backpacks. There are numerous other causes that the company is proud to support and helped them to earn the Insurance Business Canada Award for Outstanding Philanthropy and Community Service. The London based company beat out six other finalists nation-wide for the honor. “There were a lot of talented individuals and very well respected businesses at the event, and to be included within this group was an accolade in itself,” said Carr. It sure is wonderful to be recognized and rewarded for a job well done. We are truly grateful for this award.

Celebrating 60 on the gridiron Submitted by London Minor Football Association The London Minor Football Association (LMFA) celebrates our 60th season this fall. Founded in 1958, the LMFA continues to provide house league football to

boys and girls ages 7 to 13 in London and the surrounding area. We teach fundamental football skills, as well as teamwork and sportsmanship, in a fun, relaxed setting. There is a place for every child in the LMFA, regardless of size, athletic ability, or experience. Our mission is to prepare players for high school football and create football fans for life. To honour our 60th season, each of our 24 teams has committed to perform 60 hours of community service. In the

past, our teams have volunteered at the London Food Bank, the CIBC Race for the Cure, and at the London Health Sciences Centre. As well, teams have cleaned up parks and schools. This year, all our teams will use the hashtag #LMFA60, as our players, parents and coaches give back to the community that we have happily been a part of for these past 60 years. For more information on the 2018 LMFA fall season, please visit our website or call 519-852-4465.

Vanier Cup champs ‘Team of the Year’ Submitted by Western Mustangs Ontario University Athletics handed out the 2017-18 OUA Honour Awards in May, and the Western Mustangs football team adding another piece of hardware to their trophy case as the league's Male Team of the Year. The purple and white were simply unstoppable last season, galloping their way to their 31st Yates Cup championship and seventh Vanier Cup title with leading marks on both sides of the ball each time they took the field. The Mustangs finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record, and were somehow still able to find a whole

new gear come the postseason. Making their third consecutive trip to the provincial final, Western was able to come out on top in their highly-touted rematch with Laurier, taking home the 110th Yates Cup with a convincing 75-32 win in front of their home crowd. The Mustangs continued their dominance on the national level, routing Acadia in the UTECK Bowl by a final score of 81-3. Going toe-to-toe with the Laval Rouge et Or in the 53rd Vanier Cup, the Mustangs were able to pen the storybook ending they were hoping for, putting the feather in the cap of their postseason push in which they outscored their opponents 261-64 over their four games.

With 17 OUA All-Star nods on the year – leading the conference – while also seeing Nick Vanin capture the U SPORTS Russ Jackson Award, the Western Mustangs football team once again showed their championship-caliber skill from top to bottom. Western will be back on the gridiron in short order, with the 2018 edition of the squad set to begin training camp in mid-August before hitting the field for their season opener on August 26 against the Carleton Ravens. The Mustangs’ home opener is set for Saturday, September 8, at 4 p.m. against the McMaster Marauders at TD Stadium.

A new, exciting partnership Submitted by Ellis Hockey Detail A few short years ago, Mike Ellis was running a few hockey camps for kids in St. Thomas. At the time of this writing, he was on his way to the NHL Entry draft with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he’s still celebrating a Calder Cup championship. And as if he wasn't busy enough already, Ellis Hockey Detail has just signed into a partnership with Victus Academy in Kitchener to handle all on-ice development for the elite private hockey school. The Academy is an independent private school designed for both male and female elite hockey players in grades

7 through 12. Victus Academy provides the best of two disciplines – university-

applicants are those individuals who not only possess high-level hockey skills and academic ability, but who are also ready for the rigors and demands of the highly-competitive school. The foundation and main core value of Victus Academy is its commitment to develop students with the highest character through preparation, discipline, and a commitment to excellence, which will propel them as they move towards adulthood, allowing them to withstand challenges that come their way – in university, in hockey, and in their personal lives – and to achieve their full potential. Although Victus Academy is a new institution, its foundation and strength originates from its team who have devoted their lives to excellence in education and hockey. They bring their passion and experience to Victus Academy, and Victus Academy will move forward and continue this legacy. Victus Academy is located at Sportsworld Arena in Kitchener, Ontario: a city with a rich tradition of hockey that is situated in the heart of Southern Ontario, one of the best hockey regions in the world. Top talent at training facility Contributions by Snipe Academy There are numerous minor hockey teams and players that train at Snipe Academy, which was launched by a AAA hockey coach and provides a highquality instruction and well-structured programs for players looking to improve their games. But there are also talented juniors, collegiate-level, and pro players who utilize the facility. For instance, former London Knight Brett Welychka trains at Snipe Academy. In three-plus seasons with the Knights, Welychka, tallied 114 points in 193 games while earning two OHL titles. His best year came in 2013-14, when the centre notched 22 goals and 34 assists for 56 points in a season in which the

Knights finished fourth in the Memorial Cup tournament. After being traded to the Belleville Bulls in 2014-15 and playing his final OHL season (34 points in 49 games for the Bulls), Welychka enrolled at Carleton University and played three seasons for the Ravens. He was named U Sports hockey’s rookie of the year in his debut season, and he finished his university career with 98 points in 72 games (becoming the sixth all-time leading Ravens scorer despite playing just three seasons). Welychka then signed an amateur tryout contract with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League (AHL) in

March. In eight games with the Moose, he notched a goal and an assist. Justin Murray, meanwhile, is another talented player who trains at Snipe Academy. The 19-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the OHL’s Barrie Colts, and was named captain of the team last fall. Murray has played a strong defense for the Colts, and in 193 games has also tallied 68 points. Before this past season, he decided to head to Snipe Academy to fine-tune some skills. “Last summer after coming home from Barrie, I really needed to focus on improving my shooting,” Murray said. “Snipe Academy is definitely the best place in the city to do that. It’s a brand-new facility with top-of-the-line equipment.” The OHL veteran is currently working hard during the offseason in his hometown as he focuses on making it as far as he can in the hockey world. And he’s spending his time training at Snipe Academy. “They have all the tools in order for you to bring your game to the next level,” Murray said. “And the staff all know their stuff. I believe in order to have a good training facility there has to be a mix of good equipment and trainers, and Snipe Academy has both.”

Strong HOF class in ‘18 Contributions by Tom Creech The London Sports Hall of Fame announced its class of 2018 (five inductees) in June: Craig Billington, a long-time NHL goalie and executive; Allan Coulter, an Olympic volleyball player; Tom Partalas, a London soccer builder; Adam Purdy, a para-Olympic champion swimmer; and the Oakridge Secondary School boys hockey team (provincial champs in 1971, 1972 and 1973). The inductees will be honoured at the Spirit of Sport and Hall of Fame induction event, in early November, at the Western Fair District. Billington was named OHL Scholastic

Player of the Year in 1984-85 with the Belleville Bulls. He won a gold medal with Team Canada (and was named best goaltender) at the World Junior Hockey Championships in 1985 in Helsinki. A second-round draft pick (New Jersey Devils), Billington enjoyed a lengthy NHL career (332 games with a 3.55 GAA), suiting up for the Devils, the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals. Coulter led Banting Secondary School to back-to-back city championships. In 1978, he led the Western Mustangs

to an OUAA championship as a rookie. Coulter joined Canada’s National Men’s Volleyball team and went on to have the longest competitive career (1979 to 1992) on record for a Canadian. He captained the team for four years and competed at the Olympics in 1984 (Los Angeles) and 1992 (Barcelona). Small-town hockey at its best Contributions by Heidi Lalich and photo by Luis Photography It was a busy year for the Strathroy and District Minor Hockey Association (SDMHA), as the organization was represented by 10 competitive teams in the Shamrock League and 15 teams in the Lambton Middlesex Local League (LMLL). On top of that, SDMHA continued to provide development clinics (for players and goalies at all age groups) and also hosted two successful tournaments – including the Rep and AE Olympics and the John Henry Memorial Tournament. On the ice, four SDMHA competi-

tive teams won titles in the Shamrock League (the Atom, Peewee, Peewee AE and Midget AE teams), while another four earned finals wins in the LMLL (the Novice Red, Atom White, Bantam Red and Midget Red teams). Warren Woodiwiss oversees the organization as SDMHA President, a role he has served for the last three years. “He grew up playing within the organization, and he became involved again because of his children and his love of the sport,” says Heidi Lalich, SDMHA’s

Convenor. The Association relies on local businesses to sponsor teams to help offset costs in order to keep registration fees affordable for all kids who want to play Canada’s game. One of those sponsors is RONA Moffatt & Powell, who have been supporting teams in the SDMHA for many years. “They have always been involved and committed to supporting youth sports,” said Lalich. “And we’re very lucky in Strathroy to have that ongoing support. It’s what makes living in a small town so great.” And what’s on tap for next year? It will be as busy as ever (and maybe even more so). The Association will be implementing Half-Ice Hockey at the Tyke level, which is a Hockey Canada guideline to promote more puck time and an emphasis on skill development. Meanwhile, there are three tournaments already on the schedule for 201819, including the John Henry Memorial Tournament for Local League teams (Oct. 26-28, 2018), the Strathroy Rep & AE Olympics tournament (Nov. 8-11, 2018), and the Strathroy Jr. Rockets Jamboree – Tyke, Initiation Program (Feb. 15-16, 2019).

www.sdmha.org The RONA Moffatt & Powell-sponsored team from last season (Peewee White)

with John Henderson, organized the first youth competitive soccer league in London. Today, more than 17,000 young people play soccer in London. Partalas is President and CEO of the London Optimist Sports Centre, which runs the BMO Centre on Rectory Street. Purdy, at age 13 in 1994, placed 6th in the 100 metre backstroke at the first IPC World Championships held in Malta. At the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, he finished 4th in the 100 metre backstroke, and then won gold in the same event (in world record time) at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics. He returned after seven years in retirement to compete at the 2015 Toronto Para Pan Am Games, winning three medals and setting a Canadian record in the 50 metre butterfly.

The Oakridge Secondary School boys hockey team won three straight OFSSA hockey championships (1971-1973), an accomplishment that has not been repeated. The 1972-73 team went 40 straight games without a loss (still a local record). Overall, the team went 72-9-5.

Jack Gulka, Gary Hubbell and Bill Watkin (and coach Fred Israels) were on all three championship teams. Bill Robinson, Ken Petitt and Paul Porter went on to play college hockey in the U.S.

Sittler signed mini sticks for $5 for participants and attendees at the tournament, and in the end helped raise $3,000 for the Children’s Health Foundation. Andrew Mischuk, AM Roofing’s local owner, and his team then matched that donation for the great cause. “We’re always happy to support and participate in community events, including sports and hockey events of all kinds,” Mischuk said. “And especially when we have the opportunity to support the Children’s Health Foundation, which is a cause near and dear to our hearts. The GOT GAME Street Hockey Tournament was a blast, and we were thrilled not only to support the event but also a wonderful charitable organization in the process. “Darryl was a big hit with the attendees. ’05 champs crowned Team of the Century By Luis Grella and photos by London Knights The 2005 MasterCard Memorial Cup Champion London Knights have been selected as the CHL’s Team of the Century. As part of the 100th Memorial Cup festivities, the CHL set up an online voting program for fans to select who they thought was the strongest Memorial Cup winner over the last 100 championships. And when the dust settled, after the final four, the 2005 London Knights beat out the 1995 Kamloops Blazers, 2000 Rimouski Oceanic, and 2013 Halifax Mooseheads for the title. “It’s an honour to be named CHL Team of the Century,” said London Knights

Owner, President, and Head Coach, Dale Hunter. “That season was one filled with records and unbelievable accomplishments, but most of all many extraordinary young men – many of whom went on to successful NHL careers.” Coached by Dale Hunter, the Knights featured tournament MVP Corey Perry and future NHL talents like David Bolland, Dan Girardi, Marc Methot, and Brandon Prust. “We’re very appreciative of everyone who voted for us,” added Hunter. “Once again, this is a testament to our amazing fanbase here in London. We are incredibly proud of this team, our fanbase, and everyone involved in that unforgettable

season.” The 2005 London Knights began their 40th season with a CHL record 31-game unbeaten streak en route to compiling an OHL record 59 wins and 120 points. The tournament hosts entered through the front door and won their first OHL title with a 16-2 record before sweeping the national competition, including two wins over the Rimouski Oceanic led by Sidney Crosby.
