The International Experience World Baseball Academy (WBA), a Fort Waynebased non-profit organisation, serves over 80 000 people each year through their professionally organized youth baseball tournaments, indoor/outdoor training facilities and quality baseball instruction. However, one of the more interesting programs continues to be their short-term international baseball mission trips. Local students, parents, and coaches are provided the opportunity to travel with the WBA leadership to places such as Kenya, Bulgaria, Cambodia, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, and Haiti as they embark on a life changing experience!

The Focus — Accelerated Growth The international experience has created the unique ability to accelerate the personal growth process of these participants. WBA vision is to develop leaders who positively impact our world. That vision is often fulfilled in two distinct ways during an international mission trip experience. The participants

of the trip grow personally through the shared experience process while positively impacting others whom they are serving.

3. Personal Gifts in Action. Relationships change everything. When individuals begin to use their personal skills and gifts (such as teaching baseball) to serve others, and as a relationship building tool it often builds a new sense of confidence and purpose in one’s life.

The “Why” The question is often asked “why do these types of trips accelerate the personal growth of the participant?” 1. Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone. Seeking comfort, however natural it is, will never enable growth. Stepping out of your comfort zone means expecting and welcoming change. The international experience allows individuals to immerse themselves in a new culture and gives first-hand experience of seeing a different way of life.

4. Team Building. Shared experiential activities are proven to be the single most effective way to foster increasing success and group effort. The missions experience allows the group of participants to use baseball as a common goal and break down barriers. Overall, team building enables better communication, better relationships, and ultimately increases individuals ability to be successful in whatever they choose to pursue.

2. Perspective Change. In our fastpaced American culture, we rarely have time to slow down, separate, and reflect on what truly matters in our life. Short-term missions can often function like a reset button that clarifies our perspective. Experiencing the sense of joy and contentment of international children, who often have much less than ourselves, will many times change our own heart. Individuals return home less materialistic, appreciative of other

All properly fitted mouthguards provide varying degrees of protection. A custom-fitted mouthguard professionally made in the dental office can be tailored to the demands of the athlete and the sport. The most effective mouthguard should have several features. It should be resilient, tear-resistant and comfortable. It also should fit properly, be durable and easy to clean, and not restrict your speech or breathing. A mouthguard strap can be fastened to most types of mouthguards. The strap protects against loss and allows the mouthguard to be suspended from a face mask when the athelete is not in play. Generally, a mouthguard covers only the upper teeth. If you have a protruding jaw, your orthodontist may recommend that your lower teeth also be covered. If you participate in any of the activities listed in the box, the American Dental Association and the International

He ran cross-country in middle school and used to compete in golf tournaments on the Meijer Junior Tour when he was younger. High school tennis just encompasses a very small portion of his year; tennis is played year-round with tournaments multiple times per month, every month of the year. David would love to attend Stanford or a D1 school and play tennis. David has plans to major in Engineering. Interesting fact: David was the only freshman in the state of Indiana last year to be named to the First Team All-State Singles

Free IU Football camp builds skills for the fall season Article and photo by Emilia Miles

Instead of spending a hot Sunday in July staying cool in doors, local high school football players gathered at Homestead High School for a football camp held by Indiana University’s Football Program. This free camp allowed for incoming freshman through seniors in high school to train with some of the top college coaches from the Indiana University Staff, Eastern Michigan, Valparaiso, Marion College, and Olivet, along with other colleges and universities. One of the participating athletes was Tre Underwood, a senior at Bishop Luers High School, who acknowledged the success of the camp by stating, of the five camps he attended this summer, “This was by far my favorite because the coaches had great patience and detailed exercises for each player.” Though Underwood had never previously attended a summer football camp until this year, he was able to pull from the prior four camps and rank this above them due to the attention he, as well as other athletes, were receiving from the coaching staff, never being overlooked regardless of skill level. Even with the camp only being a two hour experience for Underwood, when asked

what he took away most from the camp, Underwood was able to recall the rapid fire reps stating that in the 1v1s, he “was pulled aside and given tips on how to effectively win reps in real games.” This simple practice by the coaches is what Underwood says he liked most. He was able to take advantage of the fact that he had coaches telling him exactly what he was doing right and wrong, and from that be able to take the constructive criticism and become a better player. The coaches at the camp are far from inexperienced, all having coached athletes that have excelled in the game, and some, like Jason Spring,

even continued on in the National Football League. The camp allowed the athletes to show what they had, but most importantly, it allowed for the athletes to learn from a group of wellrespected coaches as they prepared for regular season play. Underwood’s piece of advice for any athlete who is serious about the game of football is: “to seek as many opportunities, [and attend camps like this one held] by coaches other than their youth league [as] it can better them as players in the future and as people.”

Leo Lion presents: Football for Moms

In addition to the Leo Football program celebrating their 50th Year Anniversary this 2016 Season, the coaching staff held the first “Leo Football: 101 Football Clinic For Moms”. Thirty moms and their football sons started out the morning at Lion’s field for mom/son photo opportunities, a run-down of the day’s events and recognition of supporting businesses. From there, the group went into a little classroom “game of football” instruction lead by Head Coach Jared Sauder. Moms learned about player positions, offense and defense

formations, and Leo’s game of football. To get a better understanding of the strength and conditioning football requires, the group then went to the weight room. Players demonstrated proper lifting techniques followed by a bench and squat practice opportunity for the moms. Players “spotted” their moms while they lifted and tried very hard to keep from laughing as they watched their moms work hard to lift the weight bar without any added weight. After that, the group headed out to the field for warm-ups with the team. Who knew moms could do high knees

and karaoke, and thank you Coach Sauder for not including push-ups and sit-ups! After moms’ and players’ muscles were thoroughly warmed up, the moms visited several different instruction and participation stations (offense, defense, receiving, and penalties) which were facilitated by coaches and players. The Leo Moms might not be able to quite call themselves experts but were able to put their learned skills into action by running a few plays against their sons. The day concluded in the High School Gymnasium with a quick

sports@school prayer thanking the Lord for the time spent together and having made it through the day with no injuries. A fantastic lunch was provided and was accompanied by lots of conversation amongst moms and sons. The first “Leo Football: 101 Football Clinic For Moms” was a great success! To celebrate Leo Football’s 50th Anniversary a variety of activates will be held. At the opening game against South Bend Riley on August 19th the senior student body will release balloons. A commemorative decal was created and will be worn on the players’ helmets for the 2016 season. Homecoming/Alumni night on September 30th will feature a 50th year commemorative video. Past coaches will be recognized and will be honorary captains for the coin toss. A 50th year commemorative banner will be hung at Lions Field throughout the season and will be signed by the coaches and players. The Leo Football Program and Football Moms extend great gratitude to the businesses that supported the event: Anytime Fitness, Grabill Insurance Center, East Allen Courier, Nolt’s Marketplace, Meijer and O’Charley’s. Their support allowed moms to learn more about the game

of football, to create great memories with their sons, allowed the players to enhance their communication and teamwork skills and to raise money to support the Football Team through the 2016 Season.

Stanchin Junior Tennis Team battles to win District championship Article and photo contributed by Michelle Parker USTA Junior Team Tennis is an initiative by the United States Tennis Association to create tennis teams consisting of at least three boys and three girls. These teams are formed at local tennis clubs including both Wildwood Racquet Club and Empowered Sports Clubs here in Ft. Wayne. Junior Team Tennis provides both advanced and intermediate levels and age divisions so kids can compete with other players at the same age and skill level. Players may sign up as individuals and be placed on a team or they may sign up as a team together. During the team tennis season, the teams play boys’ and girls’ singles, boys’ and girls’ doubles, and mixed doubles against other teams in the area. Matches are won based on the team that won the most games, not on who won the individual matches. The Stanchin 18 & Under Advanced team, consisting of top girls’ and boys’ players from Carroll, Homestead, Bishop Luers, Leo, and Canterbury High Schools, won the Ft. Wayne area this winter and qualified to advance to the USTA Northern Indiana District Championships held in

South Bend, IN at the beginning of July. Team Stanchin won the Northern Indiana District Championships which then qualified the team to advance to the USTA Midwest Closed Championships, held at North Central High School in Indianapolis, IN at the end of July. The Midwest Closed Championship included teams from the 5 state region that makes up the Midwest Section – Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. The winner of the Midwest Closed was from Columbus, OH, and they qualified to advance to the national tournament. Team Stanchin from Ft. Wayne finished 5th overall. If you are interested in joining the USTA Junior Team Tennis in the Ft. Wayne area, contact Alexa Vanosdol at avanosdol@wildwoodracquetclub.com for more information.

Leo Fusion 12U celebrate turnaround season Article by Lisa Dager, photo by Danielle Loraine Photography Leo Fusion 12U Softball finished off their 2016 season with a championship in Grabill’s Summer Showdown Tourney on July 24th. The Fusion allowed only one run in the six games. Previously they had placed third out of 20 teams at the Battle of the Borders in Coldwater, MI, and second at NSA Mission Softball in Columbia City. They finished the season of tourneys and scrimmages with an overall record of 29–15, winning 18 of their last 22 games. The 2016 Fusion were managed by Adam Dager, and were coached by Assistant Jake Ohneck and Bench Coaches April Litzenberg and Brandon Biddle. The Fusion returned eight players in 2016. Returning starters included Shelbee Ohneck (C), Lillian Resor (1B/SS), Elise Biddle (3B), and Isabella Dager (OF/1B). They added starters Madelyn Lipscomb (P), Amelia “Millie” Ohneck (2B/P), and Adison Campagna (SS), and had a solid lineup of returning players such as Emmy Litzenberg (P/OF), Madeline “Rosie” Zink (OF/2B), Morgan “Red” Aldrich (OF/C), and Avery Smith (OF). Fusion’s team came together in October of 2014 as a very inexperienced and young group of girls. “Our 2015 season was about fun, team building, and gaining experience,”

12

FortWayne.SportsXpress.com

Coach Dager stated, “We have come a long way! I remember walking back into the gym and seeing a circle of girls doing floor stretches in absolute silence. That next Friday I coaxed a team mom to host a sleepover followed by a Saturday morning practice. During that sleepover, we became a team,” as he reflected on the 2015 team. For Coach Dager and the Fusion it was the first of many turnarounds and moments of growth that year. Coach Dager said the 2015 Fusion season was about learning how to play together and developing a team. “We got beat a lot by a lot!” Coach Dager chuckled. After a couple months off, January kicked off the Fusion’s 2016 season. The Fusion staff stressed the importance of setting and attaining goals, the mental side of the game, and developing leadership and selflessness. The Fusion girls were introduced to area softball standouts Emma Fifer of Heritage and

Robyn Hall from Leo to discuss the mental side of batting and how they were counted on from a leadership standpoint. “It’s one thing for an old guy like me to say it, but these two players have lived it! They have played travel since they were these girls’ ages. Needless to say, they were quite impressed by these two role models.” The Fusion coach sees nothing but ups for all of the girls he has coached with the Fusion program. His goal is to never burn a girl on a sport and stresses the importance of balancing studies, other sports, and family time. He also has stayed true to his Fusion mission: We offer instruction and team building with a goal of minimizing costs, and commitments of travel and time. Coach Dager added, “Softball is more than a game, it’s a battle much like most of life is. They’ll need hard work, discipline, and confidence to battle. What better way of learning these traits than with a team experiencing these same battles at the same time?”

Always 100 2022 builds skills on and off the court Article and photo by Fort Wayne SportsXpress Staff Always 100 2022 is an elite basketball team that has developed exceptional student athletes in the extramural program of AAU Basketball. The team is a part of the Parkview SportOne facilities focused athletic training through Always 100 preparation, under the strong leadership of coaches Tony Ruble and Naylon Thompson. Our team strives to understand and embrace the fundamental principles of basketball. Emphasis on developing good sportsmanship and exhibiting positive athletic and personal conduct both on and off the court are essential to this team. The team is a project supported by Always 100 and Club 1 where they introduce a strong sense of self confidence and heightened selfesteem in a structured environment. Always 100 2022 was designed to cultivate, advance and encourage each athlete’s direction through an athletic skill program that offers the opportunity to reach full potential both mentally and physically in regards to basketball. Coaches are constructive and strongly inspire personal development by reinforcing the values of hard work, dedication, and skill improvement by engaging in high level competition. The

outcome is to increase confidence to aid in structuring robust portfolios of collective and individual achievement for all student athletes. Each athlete is expected to do their personal best in every facet of life; academic excellence is a core focus for our athletes. The students have accordingly been able to identify their strengths and weaknesses and build on those in all that they are pursuing both athletically and individually. These players have adopted self-discipline, motivation, and personal effort through both private and team training as deemed from their own distinct goals.

Their focused training has not only pushed the team to new heights, each individual has adopted the desired skillset to push themselves and their team to achieve personally for fulfillment rather than for overall expectations from peers. This team’s accomplishments — earned through repetition and competition — have progressed the athletes immeasurably, resulting in vast significant player improvement. Our boys do not play for the grandeur; they play for the comradery, and simply for the love of the game.

Indiana Tech Athletics Announces Partnership with American Cancer Society Article by Tyler Stevenson, Sports Information Director at Indiana Tech

The Indiana Tech Athletic Department and the American Cancer Society have announced a partnership for the 2016-17 athletic season, the two organizations announced. “Indiana Tech Athletics is humbled to offer our service to the American Cancer Society,” Indiana Tech Athletic Director Debbie Warren said. “We plan to help raise awareness and to dedicate our time, energy and venues in support of efforts to support research, patient services, education and caregiver support in eliminating cancer as a major health problem in our country.” “The American Cancer Society is grateful for the upcoming opportunity to partner with the Indiana Tech Athletics Program to join forces in raising awareness and critical funds needed to continue our fight against cancer, in means research dollars, patient services, education and caregiver support right here in the Fort Wayne community and nationwide,” ACS Senior Market Manger, Community Engagement Mindy Torres said. “I am blown away by the dedication and work already put in place by each of the athletic teams and coaching staff to help raise awareness amongst the athletes, student body and Indiana Tech family.” Each athletic program has chosen a month over the next year in which they will raise awareness for the cancer(s) associated with that month. Each month will feature different promotions and fundraisers by the teams, both at home events and during the month. Information regarding individual games will be disseminated at appropriate times. The Warrior men’s and women’s basketball teams will continue to participate in the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative and Suits and Sneakers campaign that many collegiate programs around the country support while providing a structure for other athletic programs to follow under. “Because cancer has touched so many, Coaches vs. Cancer offers a

unique opportunity to fight the disease,” Torres said. “Through integrated fundraising activities and public awareness campaigns, participating coaches and their teams are truly making a difference in the fight against cancer and are raising awareness in our community about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and making healthy lifestyle choices.”
