Pushing BAC the Effects of Cancer for Boaters and their Families

Boaters Against Cancer was established in 2016 to provide support to boaters and their families who are battling cancer. Each year a flotilla of boats will tie up on Lake Ontario in an effort to demonstrate how boaters support each other. We will commemorate fallen cancer victims and their families or honor boaters and their family members who are currently waging their own wars against the disease.

U.S. Brig Niagara made her debut in Rochester, New York Article and photos by Marianne Warfle The U.S. Brig Niagara sailed into the Port of Rochester Marina in Rochester, New York, Thursday, July 26, 2017 for a full weekend of touring. Niagara was captained by Rochester native David Goldman, and the Rochester community came out in droves on a beautiful weekend in Charlotte to board and tour an authentic War of 1812 Flagship. “We’re elated at the success of our debut in the City of Rochester. We certainly hope the community enjoyed this historical experience and we are able to make Rochester an annual visiting port as we move forward,” said E. Shawn Waskiewicz, Executive Director of the Flagship Niagara League. Marianne Warfle, Harbor Master of the Port of Rochester Marina, said, “We are so excited to have hosted the U.S. Brig Niagara to the City of Rochester. Our city and port have so much to offer, and we’re thrilled to be able to showcase that with the addition of this historic tall ship.” While Niagara was in port, tours were offered daily, and $1.00 from each ticket sold was donated to support the

Strong Museum of Play. Visitors also had the opportunity to experience firsthand a tall ship under full sail with a sold out four-hour sail on Monday, July 31st. It was an incredible sight off the shores of Lake Ontario as the crew and guests worked the sails on a relatively windy day. Pennsylvania’s U.S. Brig Niagara is a reproduction of the relief flagship, the Commodore, that Oliver Hazard Perry captained in the Battle of Lake Erie, a major naval battle of the War of 1812. Port visitors enjoyed learning about the history of the ship as well as the diverse maritime experiences of our crew. Guests were welcome to come aboard to authentically interpret life at sea, maritime history, and Niagara’s role in the War of 1812.

The U.S. Brig Niagara is owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and is operated by the Flagship Niagara League (FNL), a 501 (C)(3) non-profit educational associate organization of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), chartered to facilitate citizen participation and operation of the U.S. Brig Niagara and its homeport, Erie Maritime Museum.

Roosevelt Bouie: Floating to rebound Article and photos by David Brickman, owner of Bodymind Float Center At seven feet tall, Roosevelt Bouie is a gentle giant — if you meet him off the court. He speaks quietly, and he laughs a lot. “When you get used to feeling good, you want to feel good all the time. I live a clean life. I don’t drink; I don’t smoke; I take care of myself. I’ve tried everything. The thing that impressed me the most was floating.” Bouie led the Syracuse Orangemen to four NCAA tournaments and played in Italy’s top professional league where he was a five-time all-star player. “I was very methodical with my fitness during my playing career. I had my own stationary bike, stair climber, whirlpool, ultrasound, heating lamps. I took really good care of myself. I would stretch for a half hour before and after practice. “Once I hurt my back when my chiropractor was on tour with the Italian national soccer team. Athletes will do whatever it takes to feel better. I knew someone who had a float tank. I had nothing to lose, so I gave it a try. I got in the tank and closed the door. Five minutes later I was asleep. I remember dreaming in technicolor. I woke and wondered what position my body was in, something athletes generally

know at all times. I imagined I was lying with my legs together and my arms at my sides. To my surprise, I discovered I was spread out and totally relaxed. I arched my back and, to my amazement, my entire spine cracked, from my neck to my lower back. It was the most incredible thing. When I got out of the tank the pain was gone and I was totally rejuvenated. It changed my whole outlook.” Bouie still vividly recalls the demands of playing professionally. “During a game, you work your muscles to the extreme. Afterwards you have to detox. We’d have a day and a half off. Then we’d practice just to break a sweat and get rid of some of the toxins. If I could have floated, it would have relieved me of all the toxins, all the stiffness. I wouldn’t have lost that day and a half. I could have done that in one hour in a float tank!” Bouie is convinced that floatation therapy is a boon to the serious athlete. “It would definitely be beneficial to players. Once I tried a float tank, I wanted to have one in my house so I

could use it every day. When I was hurt, I would go into a game feeling like I was wearing a heavy suit.” He laughs, “After floating, I felt like, ‘You better stay out of my way’! Being an athlete, you want to feel the best you can every day, all day-and you strive to do that. I know that if an athlete tries floating, they’re going to like it. If I had known about floating during my career, I would have played four or five more years.” With locations in Rochester and Syracuse, you can learn more at www.BodymindFloatCenter.com.
