Opportunities with SportsXpress Submitted by Julia Duenas, Photo credit SportsXpress tournament and lots more! I was ecstatic that I was able to use a bit of my creativity in those posters. Not only was I able to design posters for clients but I had an amazing opportunity to design The Wallaceburg Lacrosse Team’s Player Cards! It was a challenging but a fun project. Few other projects I am proud of is the motion logo for CK Performance health and helping the organizations from the SportsXpo with designing their posters! Working with Rebecca was a lot of fun! I was challenged when she took some time off to have her baby, because there are a lot of responsibilities to run a company. Rebecca makes it look very easy but it’s not! Trust me! I am incredibly thankful that I was able to work with her. She has helped me create connections with other people and improve on my design work by critiquing it! Thanks again to everyone who gave me the opportunity to be their designer!

This co-op experience with CK SportsXpress was extremely fun! I have a lot of fun designing and I know that I want to keep going on graphic design. This co-op is none like other. I was exposed to editing magazines, interviewing athletes, designing posters for organizations, design-ing an ad for our website, making podcasts, designing player cards and even recording an ad for the SportsXpo with 99.1! There are so many things I enjoyed during this co-op! One of my favourite parts of the co-op was the whole process of making the magazine! From the submission of the articles to editing to sending them to our designer, to the print and then delivering the magazines all over ChathamKent. I also like that I was able to see how the magazine is printed at the CM Design & Print. I loved that I was able to design posters for upcoming events like the SportsXpo posters, Breast Buddies, and Wallaceburg Lakers golf

Creechan Taking Life One Kick at a Time Submitted by Gary Patterson, Photo credit Gary Patterson Practice makes perfect for 17-year-old Cam Creechan. The UCC student doesn’t have much time for anything but football these days as he gets ready for a trip to Calgary in July with Team Ontario for the Canada Cup. Creechan has been working on his kicking game about 16 hours a week and is hoping that this hard work will land him in a great school. The kicker has been playing football since fourth grade with the ChathamKent Cougars. “I remember when I kicked my first ball…it felt right.” He said. “I know I have to work just as hard at school as I do at

football to keep my grades up because it’s just as important,” Creechan said. Creechan has had lots of interest from lots of school on both sides of the border. “My dad has been amazing with me as he has taught me how to set and achieve goals. He helps guide me in the right direction,” he said. Creechan credits his Cougars coaches and kicking coach, Daryl Wheeler from Western. “He really helps me with my mechanics and with the technical aspects,” he said.

Creechan is confident but it also shows great humility. “I know I can’t rush into things so after grade 12 I am going to come back for another year at UCC, I need to take things one step at a time and focus on what I can do to help my team” Creechan commented. The Chatham youth plays with the Essex Ravens as a linebacker and the kicker. “I know I have to be a role model for my younger siblings, Tyler, Michael and Madison, so if I work hard and practice hard I can show them the right path,” The young kicker said. Creechan lives and breathes football as his favourite team is the Green Bay Packers but his favourite player is Baltimore Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker. Although the future looks bright for Cam Creechan he knows he is just going to have to take it one kick at a time but he will always get a kick out of the sport he loves…football.

Soccer is for Everyone Submitted by Cindy McFadden, Photo credit Cindy McFadden For the past six weeks on every Thursday from 6pm-7pm, echoes of laughter bounced off the walls of the gym of a school in Wallaceburg. One of CK Special Populations’ most highly anticipated programs, Off the Sideline Wheelchair Soccer has just come to close for the season but will be back again in Chatham in September. Off the Sideline Wheelchair Soccer is a program that is exactly as it sounds; it takes individuals who too often are forced to sit on the sideline because of a difference in gross motor ability and puts them right in the middle of the action. The balls used are bigger than a typical soccer ball and are between 30 inches and 40 inches in size. The 40-inch ball is even the same size as the wheelchair for one of the participants! This program was all-inclusive, with participants both in wheelchairs and out. These individuals were all put to work each week, participating in drills comprising of weaving in and out of pylons with the ball, passing, and shooting. Each session concluded with a ten-minute scrimmage, where participants were able to try out their new skills and perfect old ones. This program was enjoyed by all. Participants loved being able to spend the time with their friends, and the overall joy they experienced while chasing the ball around the gym. One participant particularly enjoyed when the ball became airborne; being able to “head” a 40-inch ball is no small feat!

Every Day, Every Race, is it’s Own Submitted by Kyra Vellinga, Photo credit Sharon Smith This year I was part of the Track and Field team at CCHS. I’ve been competing in this sport outside of school for the past few years, and was excited to see what high school track was like. The coaches at the school were very helpful and encouraged every athlete to meet their own personal goals. My first high school season was successful. I competed in three events: 200m, 300m hurdles, and 400m. As we got further into competition season, I was excited for the hurdles, because I was running great times, and had potential to do well at OFSAA. Unfortunately, I fell over the first hurdle at OFSAA West, thus ending my hurdles run.

I placed fourth in the 400m at OFSAA West, to move on to OFSAA, alongside CKSS’s Emma Pegg. At OFSAA, I placed twelfth in the province, and Pegg placed 3rd. OFSAA was a surreal experience, and it was there that I realized that all my hard work had paid off. I would strongly encourage anyone going into high school this year, to try out track. It’s personally rewarding, and you make friendships with people in your own school and students across the province. Outside of track, my first year of high school was great. Going into the year, I was nervous about being with a new group of people, but I ended up becoming friends with many people. In

my classes, I learned how to effectively study, and I also discovered what job I’d like to have in the future. Overall, I learned a lot in my grade nine year, and am excited to see what the rest of high school holds.

SportsXpo Xperience Submitted by SportsXpress, Photo credit SportsXpress The SportsXpo this year was a success! Thousands of people came to check out the Athletic Locker sale and learned about sports organizations in CK! The event took place at Thames Campus Arena on June 11 - 16. This year’s SportsXpo’s focus was to give Chatham-Kent an unforgettable experience. We invited local athletes to the xpo to showcase their successes,

sign autographs and get pictures taken with fans. Athletes Tim Mackenzie, Trent and Dane Fox, Ella Tryon, Madison Broad and Shannon Szabados all took time to make an appearance. The first featured athlete was Tim Mackenzie. Tim has been racing for two decades. Last year’s season for Tim was flawless, he won the Championship, Mid-season race, the shootout and many

She has been swimming for as long as she can remember. Some of her accomplishments are swimming with Team Ontario in the Grand Prix Series in Indianapolis, selected to compete for the Junior National Development team, competed in the Junior National

Championship and many more. One of Madison’s goals is to be able to compete in the Olympics. Finally, we were able to have Shannon Szabados out on the last day of our event. Shannon brought the medals she has won in the Olympics. She is a professional hockey goaltender for Canada women’s national ice hockey team and for Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs. Shannon represented Canada at 2010, 2014, and 2018 Winter Olympics. The Blenheim Blades, Wallaceburg Lakers and Chatham Maroons also made appearances to connect with their fans. The Importance of Sleep Submitted By Dr. Brian Sides, Photo credit Dr. Sarah Ystma To compensate for lack of sleep we tend to turn to stimulants such as nicotine, caffeine, and other energy drinks. While this gives some shortterm relief, in the end, it only makes the

problem worse and increases the stress response. Sleep experts recommend avoiding all stimulants including caffeine all together after lunch. Likewise, for the millions of Americans who suffer from sleep disorders, it is recommended to make your bedroom as dark as possible

226-996-1712 467 St. Clair Street, Chatham www.ckperformancehealth.com Chiropractic • Acupuncture • Massage Therapy • Movement Therapy

and a little cooler in temperature. Since bright light stimulates wakefulness, it is also recommended to avoid television, computers, and phone displays for at least a half an hour prior to bedtime. You should even dim the lights in your bedroom or bathroom mirror when you prepare for bed. For those who still have difficulty with uninterrupted sleep, I still recommend using a guided meditation c.d. to fall asleep. You can also try tryptophan or melatonin as a more natural sleep aid. Neither of these should cause drowsiness the next day. Change your routine, supplement if necessary, but either way, make sleep a priority not only for your mental state and productivity but for your overall health as well.

Red Devils Setting New Records! Interview by SportsXpress, Jamie Knight (coach Wallaceburg Red Devils), Photo credit Aaron Hall Describe your regular season in a few sentences. We tied the Red Devils record with 16 wins in a season. Set a new record for most goals in a season as well. Happy with players sacrificing personal goals for the sake of the Team. Disappointed that we lost 3 times to Windsor and we didn’t win the division.

What was the environment like in the dressing room? We have a vet team that is very supportive and eager to teach the rookies. But the vets were also very good at holding each other accountable. My job is easy when older kids tell the younger ones, hey, that’s not how we do things around here.

Where do you see the team going from here? A long playoff run I hope!

Do you have quite a few players graduating this year? Cory Lucier Brendan Johntson Bronson Bea Brock Daugherty Vern Hill Jordan Goddard Bailey Skye Blane Adams Cory Burr Corey Conroy

into great young men. Great at giving back to the community, Great at helping and mentoring our young players in minor lacrosse. I’ve been with this group since 2010 so it’s gonna be very emotional for me. The player cards SportsXpress designed and printed for us and our social media have been so good this year. Huge hits.

Anything else you want to say to our readers? Going to watch a Red Devils

Wow! What does that mean for the next season? It will be a younger team with lots of opportunity for young players to move into starting roles. Hope they are learning a lot this season!

What’s been the highlight of the year so far? For me it’s watching our kids turning

game is very entertaining. There’s far more than the product on the floor. You will love the speed and skill of the athletes but it’s a great night out for the family

Raising Awareness Through Hockey Submitted by Virginia Russell, Photo credit Virgina Russell What is the fundraiser about? 3 on 3 hockey tournament is to raise awareness and money for Childhood Cancer Organizations that support children dealing with cancer and their families. How did this fundraiser begin? Braden was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in April 2011. With Braden’s help, the first tournament was formed in Apr. 2012. Braden did not want the tournament to be about him but about the organizations that support all children with a cancer diagnosis. What was the purpose of the tournament? For Braden hockey was about the friendships and the fun of playing the sport. This tournament doesn’t recognize winners and losers and no trophies are presented. Teams would show up with interesting headgear on their helmets or wearing tutus for added fun. Team names can be quite inventive as well such as Victorious Secret, Mighty Pucks or Stick Magnets. Who can play in the hockey tournament? Ages 7 to 17. All levels, we’ve even had figure skaters give it a try.

What kind of organizations has supported the tournament? Ridgelandfill is a huge supporter of our ice time and insurance, the tournament’s biggest expense, other sponsors include: Braden’s family doctor- DL Watterud, Prosthetist Brock Loewen, Terra Vista Farms, Manitree Farms, and St Clair College have been regular sponsors. Victory Ford and Lanoue Chevrolet have hosted Drive events in the past two years which have increased our donations. The Childhood cancer organizations sends representatives and have had Braden’s oncology case nurse, Julie, and his Oncologist, Dr. Paul Gibson attend to show their support. One year featured former NHL hockey player Todd Warriner along with other higher level hockey players play a game against the Canadian Amputee Hockey Team as a special event. This year featured an exhibition game of Braden’s friends who are now too old to play in the tournament but show up every year to support by watching a game or helping with the event. What is the goal of the fundraiser? In the past 7 years, we’ve donated close to $150,000. to: Childcan, Make A Wish, CHAMPS (Child Amputees), the Ronald McDonald House and Pediatric Oncology. Each of these charities directly assists families

with a cancer diagnosis; by providing food vouchers for the hospital, parking passes, covering medication costs, covering mobility devices or medical equipment, providing accommodations and meals or granting a trip wish. What do you enjoy most about creating this fundraiser? Braden passed away in Feb 2015, this tournament continues to keep his memory alive while continuing to support organizations that supported Braden, his Dad, Scott, Mother Ginny, and sisters Taylor and Chelsea. Each year families tell us how much joy the tournament brings to the players and that we must keep it going! Family and friends continue to support yearly by assisting with the timekeeping, refereeing games, assisting with the silent auction and raffle tables, etc. Hockey was a part of Braden’s and our family’s life for many years. When Braden played Blenheim Minor hockey, the 3 on 3 tournament has been a great way for us to keep connected with the hockey families as well as show our appreciation and bring awareness to worthwhile Childhood cancer organizations.

Gold!

Submitted by Brad & Val Duquette, Photo credit Brad & Val Duquette

The Chatham Attack U16 boys brought home the gold medal from the 15th annual Ancaster Heritage Days soccer tournament. The team competed in the BU16 Gold Division where the games were all very tight and physical between the 7 teams participating. After finishing in first place, the Attack went on to win the semifinal game in a shootout and then in dramatic fashion, won in the finals - again in a shootout! The team showed true grit, battling until the end to bring home the championship trophy. Stefan Borovicanin scored in a close 2-1 loss vs Kitchener Spirit ‘A’ in the opener. Chatham took game two over Windsor Ciociaro FC by 2-0. Ashton Van Helden had the shutout while Cameron Marson and Christian Mastroianni scored for the Attack. In the semi-final against the Pelham Panthers Owen Den Brinker had the first goal for the Attack. Late in the second half when Chatham was trailing 2-1, facing elimination, Aiden Lucyk tied it up, forcing a shootout. Shootout goals were scored by Mastroianni, Colin Kloostra, and Marson. Van Helden was

superb in net, stopping a penalty shot earlier in the game and then denying 3 of Pelham’s shots in the shootout to take the win, sending Chatham to the finals! The championship game proved equally exciting, Borovicanin scored for Chatham and regulation time ended in a 1-1 tie against Mount Hamilton. Chatham earned the win in another shootout, going all the way to 5 shooters for each team. Van Helden was in net for the big victory. Shootout goals came from Mastroianni, Kloostra, Marson and Josh Balan netted a beauty to put it away for the Attack! “This was a very competitive tournament, all the teams were very close. What stood out most for me is the resiliency of this team. The guys never gave up, even when down in the semifinals, rather they rose up, each time to bring this title home. The coaches are proud of these guys, each and every one of them. The coaching staff couldn’t be more impressed. This was a big tournament victory for this team against the very tough competition.” Steve Kloostra - Head Coach - Chatham Attack BU16
