Free Your Fitness: Looking for More “Life Changers” in Southwest Austin Article by SportsXpress Staff, photos by Free Your Fitness 24 Manny Hernandez, owner of Free Your Fitness, can’t stop talking about the “Life Changers” that walk into his gym every day. These are individuals who have made the decision to make the necessary changes to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Hernandez and his team at Free Your Fitness have helped dozens of people become Life Changers through group fitness classes, through personal training sessions, and most importantly by helping them develop the mental fortitude to stay the path. “To inspire the human mind to overcome both physical and mental boundaries through fitness and health,” that’s the motto at Free Your Fitness. Manny is a former U.S. Marine and an Austin native. He understands the hardships and the struggles it takes to break bad habits and to gain mental strength. Manny knows it isn’t easy, but he and his team of veteran trainers know that a strong mind, will and attitude are the keys to making positive and healthy lifestyle changes. Manny and his staff welcome you

to come in and join a class today. Visit www. freeyourfitness24.com to learn more. In the meantime, Manny offers these tips to get you on the path to becoming a Life Changer:

Get a Workout Buddy We all need accountability. If you are not getting calls or texts by trainers to account for your diet, then you need a workout partner. This will help motivate you to keep going and have a little fun in the process. Get a workout partner so you two can hold each other accountable by making sure you two are meeting up for workouts, are eating healthy and are smiling along the way!

Get Moving Walking and running are great cardiovascular workouts that will help strengthen your heart. Here at Free Your Fitness we recommend all our “Life Changers,” walk/run at least 20 minutes a day three days a week. This will help decrease cholesterol levels, increase energy and in some cases decrease

anxiety and stress levels.

Get Uncomfortable You must get out of your comfort zone and try new things. Becoming uncomfortable does not mean sweating until you pass out or throw up. It simply means, trying new things. Come try a dance class or a kickboxing class. If you are interested in weights, come try a strength training class. If you suffer from lower back pain, come try a yoga class. Albert Einstein said it best, Insane: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Here at Free Your Fitness, we cater to all individuals, because we know that NOT one body is the same as another!

Austin Junior Volleyball, Austin Sports Center leads way in developing life skills, competition for young players Article by Rachel Corbelli, photos by Sharon Ellman/Ellman Photography At Austin Sports Center, we encourage kids to play sports and games through school and well into adulthood, and we have the programs to get your young athlete started at an early age. Our tiny athletes program teaches kids ages three to eight the basics of several sports, while they learn to turn any activity into a game. The athletes, sometimes alongside their parents, develop an appreciation of sports and games that will grow for years to come. If your older daughter or son is ready to add another sport to their repertoire, he or she should consider playing volleyball. Indoor volleyball is currently the most popular team sport for high school girls, and sand volleyball is now the fastest growing NCAA sport. At Austin Junior Volleyball club, we have programs for girls and boys, both indoor and outdoor, that cater to every level. It’s the perfect place to get started in a new athletic adventure. Our Athletic Development program offers a Level One: Learn To Play class where kids can develop fundamentals of the sport and be in a team training environment. They’ll then graduate to our Level 2 Train + Compete programs which expand on the fundamentals and include 30 minutes of speed, agility, and jump training. Finally, after completing our Level 3 Club Training program, athletes will be ready to join an Austin Juniors club volleyball team. Austin Juniors has set the standard for volleyball in Central Texas. This summer, the club qualified ten teams for the Girls Junior National Championships in Indianapolis, four of which finished in the top ten. After nationals, the club sent a group of athletes to Europe to compete with teams from all over the region. Two of our members trained with USA Volleyball squads. In addition, earlier this fall, 32 of our 2016 graduates headed to college to continue their volleyball careers. Our mission is to train youth to

optimize their athletic potential and develop life skills through volleyball. As we kick off our 32nd club season this month, we hope you’ll join us in creating the next generation of champions. For more information about any of our programs, contact us at rcorbelli@ austinsportscenter.com or visit austinsportscenter.com.

Local Turkey Trot now a tradition in Circle C Article by SportsXpress staff

What started out as just a quick run among friends has turned into a Thanksgiving Day tradition in Circle C. Three years ago, Ana Bosada invited a few friends and neighbors to go for a Thanksgiving morning run. Forty people showed up. Just last year, that little run drew more than 500 people. We wanted to give families an option to stay home and get a little exercise on Thanksgiving morning, said Ana. “On Thanksgiving, many folks have family members visiting and they don’t want to head downtown to run in the annual Turkey Trot, so we decided to organize a neighborhood-only run here in Circle C.” Ana, an avid runner, had a feeling that last year’s run would be much bigger, so she enlisted the help of Jack Murray at High Five Events. He supplied the mile markers and the cones. Aurora Jones at Barre3 Austin/Circle C helped provide KIND Bars.

Austin.SportsXpress.com

“The run is a natural fit for us at Barre3. What we do in our studio translates into your normal life and that includes running. The popularity of the Thanksgiving day run shows that we have an active community,” said Aurora. Last year, Whole Foods and HEB supplied the bananas. The Circle C Select Swim Team manned the water stations and Camp Gladiator was there near the finishing line with support and music. The event has turned into a neighborhood effort from the community and the businesses that serve it. “I’m excited about what the race has become. Neighbors tell me all the time how much they love it. A lot of people want to get in a workout in before all the craziness of Thanksgiving and all the eating,” said Ana. Ana expects close to 600 people

this year. Runners and walkers can choose between a 5K or a 10K course. Families, children, strollers and leashed pets are all welcome. The event is free and limited to Circle C residents and their families. “I’m a little worried about what will happen if we decide to go out of town on Thanksgiving. Who will organize the race?” Ana joked. “It’s good for kids and good for families. It’s now a tradition in our neighborhood.” This year’s Circle C Turkey Trot is set for Thanksgiving morning, November 24th at 8:30 a.m. Participants will meet at the Circle C Community Center on LaCrosse and Spruce Canyon.

Austin Baseball Club: Building impact players for nearly two decades Article submitted by Austin Baseball Club The Austin Baseball Club works exclusively with 14U to 18U ball players and families ensuring that you have our undivided attention during one of the most important stages on your baseball careers. We focus all of our energy and attention on helping families navigate each stage of the high school baseball timeline. ABC select teams compete in premier tournaments, showcase events, and games during the fall, spring, and summer, but the reality is, that regardless of your baseball resume, many can play, but few are great players. ABC fingerprints can be found on baseball rosters at every level of play from junior varsity squads, to junior college baseball; from the BIG12 to the SEC; from the minor leagues to the MLB playoffs. ABC understands what it takes. The ABC organization is committed to the process of developing impact varsity players. Not every player is an impact player today, however, the ABC coaches share a common goal and passion to help each player reach their maximum potential and develop into an undeniable or invaluable asset to their team. It starts with attitude and effort. At times, the ABC program will test a ballplayer’s (and parent’s) sense of entitlement, pride, and selfishness because the title of Impact Player is earned (by the player), not by mere participation. To help manage the process, the Austin Baseball Club has exclusive use of two indoor training academies conveniently located on both sides of town to eliminate crisscrossing town and fighting traffic (north location, 4500 sq. ft. near 183/Anderson Mill; south location, 8500 sq. ft. near Congress/Ben White). ABC has perfected a true Player Development Program that targets three main components: Technical skills development (swing/throwing mechanics, instruction), Tactical skills

development (reactions on the field; where to be and when), Mental skills development (handling adversity and approach to the game, on the mound, at the plate). Here’s a peek into a day in the life of an ABC ball player; you provide the desire, we provide the opportunity: •

• •

Up to four opportunities a week to attend team practices, player development workshops, and optional sessions hosted at ABC indoor academies and on the field. Year-round ABC360 “unlimited access” pass to our exclusive indoor academies empowers ball players to commit extra time working on their craft. Mental skills seminars and parent/player classroom and lab workshops. Written evaluations and video

analysis ABC college placement, mentor and recruiting road-map program Exposure is a premium. ABC provides a first class game/ tournament/showcase schedule playing in events hosted by Perfect Game, the Texas Showcase League, Texas Baseball Tournaments and more.

The Austin Baseball Club guarantees that your ball player (and family) will experience the benefits of a first-class organization that strives to teach young men to play the game of baseball the right way. We are currently looking to build relationships with new and prospective players and families for our Spring 2017 14U season and Summer 2017 15U to 18U season. Make a Difference: Run or walk in honor of a child with a brain injury! Article and photos by Hope4Minds Hope4Minds was chosen as one of the official charities for the Austin Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K presented by NXP on February 19, 2017. Hope4Minds is a 501(c)(3) public charity that fosters hope and enriches the lives of children with an acquired brain injury through support and education. Hope4Minds began as Hope4JD after JD Hartman suffered a nonfatal drowning in his family’s pool in Circle C. “Hope4Minds is excited to be a part of Austin Gives Miles and the 2017 Austin Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K,” said Ronda Johnson, Executive Director of Hope4Minds. “Our goal is to raise $10,000 and continue to raise awareness about our mission throughout the community.”

Hope4Minds is recruiting individuals to join their team. Team sponsors are Covert Buick and ATX Hyperbarics. Individuals can choose to run in honor of a child who has suffered a brain injury. There are great incentives for team members. Go to www.hope4minds.org under the Events tab for more information on how to join their team or make a donation. Volunteers will also be needed. “I’m running in honor of Braden, who inspires me to cross the finish line no matter what obstacles I face,” says Tommy Hollahan of Home Source Mortgage. Braden was shot in the heart with a pellet gun in 2013 and suffered an anoxic brain injury. He went into cardiac arrest and was without a heartbeat for 22 minutes. He was given 24 hours to live.

sportsfiles Miraculously, Braden survived and continues to amaze doctors in his recovery. According to The Center for Head Injury Services, approximately 1 in 500 schoolage children each year receive a head injury severe enough to be hospitalized. Although families are eligible for state and federal financial support, funding is limited, and families are forced to pay for medical care on their own. A child who survives a head injury faces a wide range of conditions, including short-term memory loss; a decline in functions such as reasoning, judgment, and synthesizing information; difficulty with words; and visual disturbances. Other effects may include lack of coordination, an inability to coordinate familiar movements, spasticity, and quadriparesis, a weakness of the arms and legs.

At the heart of their services is the conviction that the health and wellbeing of these children can improve over time if families have access to educational materials, therapeutic services and adaptive equipment for their children. Hope4Minds has approved over $65,000 in services to families this year. They have two monthly support groups, along with a Parent4Parent Support Program. Hope4Minds also partners with local businesses to offer CPR/First Aid Trainings, Concussion Education Trainings and Baseline Screenings in the Austin area.

SW Austin Pop Warner and Cheer form winning partnership with Bowie Football Article by SWA Pop Warner & Cheer It’s no surprise that Texas is the epicenter of high school football, and here in Southwest Austin, that is no exception. Football and cheerleading can start at the elementary school age and with support from the James Bowie High School football and cheer programs, these young athletes have an opportunity to learn the same philosophy, playbook, cheers, and terminology today that they may use again in later years. This is a winwin combination for the kids today and ultimately for our local high school, which will see these kids in a few short years. Southwest Austin Pop Warner (SWAPW) is a local youth football and cheer program for children ages 5 to 12 in southwest Austin and surrounding areas. SWAPW is associated with Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. nationally and Hill Country Pop Warner at the League level. Pop Warner Little Scholars is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. We believe that the standards we have set give these children a lifelong sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics. The SWAPW football and cheer program opens for registration on April 1st and begins practice on August 1st each year and is designed to provide an atmosphere that emphasizes safety, academics, fun, teamwork, leadership, and pride. Many of the SWAPW players will eventually attend Bowie High School; therefore, we formed a partnership between these two programs. “Getting the boys familiar with the system at this age is a huge advantage for kids trying to get an edge when it comes to competing for positions later in their football career,” said Wade McDonald, SWAPW Board Member. In addition to the coaching support

14

Austin.SportsXpress.com

received, SWAPW players were invited this year to participate in some Bowie Varsity pre-game ceremonies. Players were able to run across the field with the Bowie varsity team and the lil’ Dawg cheerleaders cheered alongside the varsity squad for the first quarter of a game. No doubt, the experience brought smiles to the kids and their parents and provided long-lasting memories. Our goal at SWAPW is to create a community environment amongst our participants, volunteers, neighbors, schools, and local businesses. The SWAPW Board of Directors strongly believes the partnership and community connection can really pay dividends for both sides. These young football players will make their way into Bowie’s program led by Coach Jeff Ables. These better-prepared players have a chance to take their respective

middle schools and Bowie High School team to the next level. “Our boys are so excited to get to wear black/red, to run the plays that they see on Friday nights, and to be a part of a program that they can stick with through their grade school years,” said James Stinson, SWAPW Coach. “Coach Ables has given these guys an exceptional opportunity to fine tune their skills many years before stepping on the Bowie campus.” www.swadawgs.com 512-953-DAWGS swapwdawgs@gmail.com

Wee Ball makes a winning debut at Oak Hill Article by SportsXpress Staff, photos by SportsXpress and Robby Nethercut Is there anything cuter than seeing young boys and girls playing Tee Ball? You can just see it: a swing, the ball dribbles out to the pitcher’s mound where NINE players converge on the ball. In the meantime, the batter is off and running — not to first base, but to third base! Well, now there is something that will rival Tee Ball. How about watching threeand four-year-olds playing Wee Ball? That’s right, Wee Ball. It’s technically a step below Tee Ball (five- and six-yearolds), but it’s receiving rave reviews at Oak Hill Youth Sports Association. “I looked into the dugout at a recent game and instead of water bottles scattered all over, there were sippy cups all over the dugout!” said Karry Ponce, board member at OHYSA. The goal of Wee Ball is simple: to teach young players to hit the ball off the tee and run towards first base. Sounds simple enough, but try getting that concept through to pre-schoolers. It takes time and practice. Games and practices are on the same day. There’s a 30-minute practice session, followed by a 30-minute game. The format allows youngsters to immediately implement the skills they

ill H k a O si nc

learned minutes earlier. Also, every player has a parent or guardian on the field with them at all times. Someone has to keep them focused right? “It’s been a good experience. They’re too young to have a practice on one day and a game on another day. The format allows them just enough time to do some drills and then apply those skills immediately in a game. It also gets them involved in a social activity,” said Robby Nethercut, parent of four-yearold Grasshopper player, Roger. At OHYSA, there’s another goal of Wee Ball besides getting kids involved in baseball at an earlier age. A secondary goal is having parents accustomed to coaching their kids and others. “We need parent involvement at Oak Hill. The sooner we can get them involved in helping and coaching the better,” said Ponce. “We want them to know that baseball and softball are family sports.” OHYSA will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year and once again, league officials are gearing up for a busy Spring 2017 schedule.
