FitFest Got Windsor Moving by Amanda Garant

a child’s desire to become more physically active, getting them involved in healthy routines and allowing them to develop team player skills is something I wish I had the opportunity to do when I was younger! So it is my honor to announce that just under $1100 was raised towards our local Jumpstart chapter!

To say “thank you” would be an understatement. Those words do not begin to describe the gratitude I have towards the countless vendors, sponsors and the hundreds of attendees of Windsor FitFest! This event, held at the Serbian Centre this past April 14th and 15th, hosted over 45 local businesses and people who specialize in health, fitness and wellness. After my own 150 lb weight loss journey, I have gained a new appreciation for what it means to truly live! I have gotten the opportunity to share my story numerous times, most notably in Women’s World Magazine in 2016, where I even appeared on the cover! I was given a platform and the opportunity to inspire and motivate. I felt it was very important for my story to mean much more. When the idea of gathering together some of the best in the industry to celebrate health and wellness came to me, it was just as natural for me to think of more ways to give back. My community supported me so much throughout my journey, so how could I give back? I decided that this event needed a charitable twist! Partnering with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities was a natural fit! Jumpstart gives families and parents help in involving their children into sports and rec activities! Supporting

Among the many fitness demonstrations, contests, free give aways, health seminars and the charity raffle table, FitFest got to present someone very special! Thanks to our sponsors from Universal Fitness, we had the host of “America’s Next Great Trainer” and MMA Master Rob Fletcher in attendance! Rob took attendees through one of his self-defense HIIT style workouts and was on hand for a book signing. He also made a giant announcement for all of Canada during his time at FitFest... Rob is launching “Canada’s Next Great Trainer”! We are so honored to have Rob choose Fitfest to debut this new project!

to help you live your healthiest life. There really is an option for ANYONE! There is no cookie cutter approach to health and wellness. Motivation will come and go. Your best bet is to arm yourself with knowledge and continue to grow and expand your awareness about yourself and your capabilities. Always pushing just outside your comfort zone, because that is where real change happens!

If you attended Fitfest, I hope you left feeling motivated to start a new journey or inspiration on new ways to enhance your already active lifestyle. If you didn’t get the opportunity to come by, know that there are a huge number of people and businesses right in your backyard; whose soul mission is

Creating FitFest was another goal in my life, another mountain for me to climb. To every person who had a hand in helping me reach the top of that mountain - THANK YOU! And now I’m ready to climb the next one....

Preseason Soccer Preparation start back up again. Lots of us put in a lot of hard work in the off season to get prepared for the outdoor season. As soccer players, we need to be strong, fast, flexible, agile and have endurance to last 90 minutes. The snow has melted (hopefully), the trees are starting to get leaves and soccer season is about to

and squats, but we like to throw in a few exercises that aren’t as popular but have a big carry over effect to soccer players.

Here are 5 of my favourite exercises to help prevent injuries and strengthen those areas that are usually the When we go about our culprits for injuries that cause programming for soccer players we obviously keep the players to miss games. main lifts such as deadlifts

Five benefits you might not realize you are getting when you exercise 1. Nordic Hamstring Curl Place your feet in a secure area or have a partner hold your legs down. From there, lean forward slowly going as far as you can. If your hamstrings are strong enough you will be able to pull yourself back up (Good luck). By going down slowly you are working the muscle eccentrically, which has been shown to help reduce injuries in soccer players. The hamstrings are the number one injury a soccer player faces. It is imperative that the hamstrings get work from all types of angles with various tempos to help decrease our risk of sustaining injury. Try 3 sets of 3 – 5 reps to start and lower yourself slowly keeping the eccentric contraction between 2 and 5 seconds.

2. Standing Adductor Pulls Tie a band or use a cable and attach it to your ankle or foot. From there stand straight up and pull the band from the anchor point in towards your body. Pull towards your base leg but don’t make contact, just get close. If you feel like you don’t have the balance to complete this properly, simply grab onto something that will help you maintain balance.

3. Birddog Row on Bench This is an exercise that offers a lot of value. The birddog row is an exercise that can help with core stiffness, stability, coordination and strength. For the set up for this one you can use a dumbbell or a kettlebell and use a stable bench in the flat position. Place one arm and the opposite leg on the bench. Pull the weight up towards the bottom of the ribs and slowly release trying your best to maintain a strong posture. This will be very difficult to not rotate with the weight. Make sure you don’t go so heavy that you lose the form. Form is paramount on this exercise.

4. Landmine This is a great way to work your hamstrings from the hip position. The hamstrings have two functions; they help to flex the knee and to extend the hips. Now if you don’t have a landmine for barbells don’t worry I’ve found that just placing a barbell against a wall will work fine for this exercise. To set up, place the end of the barbell overtop of the midsole of the foot furthest from the anchor point. Use a hip hinge motion when you are lowering the weight. Most people want to just flex at the hips when doing this. What I tell my clients is to push through the heel of the foot on the elevated leg as far back as they can and keep your chest big. This usually leads to better spinal position at the end of the movement. Now when coming back up don’t pull up from the shoulders, instead, drive your hips forward. This will help you keep the spine in a good position and really work the hamstrings and glute muscles.

5. Bulgarian Split Squat This exercise has many different names but all in all this is a great bang for your buck exercise. This exercise really mimics the running motion and when loaded correctly is a great exercise for your core as well. The set up for this is to stand with your rear foot elevated behind you. I like to place my foot on a bench. From that position you would lower yourself as if you were doing a squat making sure to not let your knees go over your toes. If you are doing that or are letting your heal come off the ground stand further away from the bench. You should feel the quads and glutes on the front leg if you go down far enough and a nice stretch in the hip flexors of the elevated leg. There are many ways to load this exercise. However, make sure you have the balance and correct form before adding to the exercise.

Summary The main idea for using these exercises is that they are compound movements used to combat the main areas of injury in soccer players. By doing these exercises our aim is to prevent injury and produce more strength, adding to our speed and power output. Add these into your program and watch the difference they can make.

Windsor’s Finest ‘Level Up’ for Fifth Annual Youth Academy by Kathy Guenette

The cold weather of the early spring day did not hamper the turnout of many aspiring young football stars for this year’s 5th annual Windsor’s Finest Football Academy. The event draws hundreds of youth football players each year; excited to be near and coached up by a number of professional NFL and CFL athletes that they emulate. Co-founders Tyrone Crawford, Daryl Townsend and Tarrence Crawford have deep roots in the Windsor football community and return each year, bringing with them motivating camp mentors and a new message of empowerment. This year’s focus asked kids to ‘level up’, meaning to dig deeper to find that extra drive to improve

and move closer towards their goals, both on and off the field. As a testament to this motto, Windsor’s Finest Tyrone Crawford (drafted by Dallas Cowboys in 2012) was named Defensive Captain this past season after battling back from injury. His ‘level up’ attitude, determination and ability to remain humble is what has brought this local Catholic Central graduate up to the esteemed level that he has attained today, inciting Windsor pride for him as one of our own.

worked on football fundamentals and skill development, providing Windsor youth with a rare insight into their professional football knowledge and experience. The younger athletes enjoyed being active with the NFL Play 60 stations and showed excitement running through the NFL inflatable helmet together with the pros while the smoke machine bellowed and fans cheered. More than forty camp scholarships were given to local athletes and a separate pre-camp day was put on with the Canadian Tire Jumpstart On April 7th, over two sessions (divided by age) WFFA professional program for 250 students from 5 elementary schools. Campers took athletes and camp mentors

bullying message that has been a constant since WFFA’s inception. There is no doubt that these 350 camp attendees received valuable lessons and made memories that will last a lifetime. Other Windsor native professional players taking part this year included Michael Carter (Montreal), Chris Rwabukamba (Edmonton), Arjen Colqhoun (Edmonton), Nate O’Halloran (Montreal), Frank Renaud (Winnipeg), and LaSalle’s Luke Willson (Detroit). Former Windsor Lancer Matt Bucknor (BC) returned for his 5th appearance.

In addition, this year’s camp provided an opportunity for local youth to talk to, ask questions and learn from these elite athletes with a hope to spark that resilient attitude. To further this message, Kids Help Phone organization provided athletes with information on emotional health, while Paul McCrary from Limitless Training presented his inspirational story of fighting back through personal tragedy to present day success. W.E.F.L. - More Than Just Football

The Windsor Essex Football League teaches its youth many things. Of course, the game of football is the first, but that is not the only focus. The W.E.F.L is about having its players have the same opportunity to learn and play any position no matter their skill level. Players will learn life lessons such as teamwork, dedication, respect, and discipline to name a few. What about winning and losing? Yes, everyone likes to win, and nobody likes to lose, but do they know how? The W.E.F.L teaches its players how to win by focusing on respect to the other team, and what it means to be rewarded by putting in a strong effort. Yes the league will also teach your son or daughter how to lose. Key points

14

Windsor.SportsXpress.ca

on how to overcome defeat, setting goals, and how it builds character. On the field week after week, you can see teams coming together. The results are extraordinary. Players improving because they get their fair share of playing time, the once shy kid is not so shy, players helping one another up off the ground, either their own teammates or the their opponent, huge smiles, laughter, sometimes tears because of the passion these kids have and most of all, The Family Fun atmosphere. It’s just not limited to brothers and sisters, or moms and dads, but the closeness these players have developed towards one

another on their respective teams. Board Members, Coaches, and Volunteers go above and beyond to be great role models for the players. The perfect example is when Coach Anthony of the PeeWee Hawkeyes found out that one of his players had his bike stolen. He immediately contacted his team telling them what had happened. The coach offered up the first monetary donation towards the goal of getting his player a new bike. The team followed suit and Coach Anthony delivered a new bike to his player. Do you want this for your child? Register online at wefl.ca or contact the league at weflboard@ gmail.com for assistance. Give your kids a chance to learn the game of football while playing in a safe, fun, and family atmosphere. Not sure, bring them to our free camps. The first is Saturday May 26th 10:00-1:00. The second will be a camp/family day on Saturday July 7th from 10:00-4:00 with lots of exciting things to do for everyone. Any and all families are welcome to attend. You don’t have to belong to the Windsor Essex Football League to come out and enjoy yourself. The league does this because of its commitment to giving the youth and their families a great W.E.F.L experience and proving that the Windsor Essex Football League is “More Than Just Football”.
