Kitchener Atom A Lady Rangers

A parent’s view By Reagan Yuke My daughter Lane Yuke is a senior atom player and this is her second year at the atom level. Lane has confidence that’s awesome to watch when she’s on the ice. She has made so many friends in hockey, both on her team and rival teams due to her love of the sport. She loves the practices where she gets to know a different side of her teammates and coaches, the games where she can show her stuff and prove that the Lady Rangers are the best, and the team-building activities like sleepovers after most Saturday games too. Since girls play one year with teammates one year older and then the next a year younger, it gives them all an opportunity to learn from experienced peers and also become leaders and mentors. Through the craziness of scheduling the kids in hockey with practices, tournaments, fundraisers, team-building, and what seems to be thousands of dollars spent, our family seems to be frantic. Then we watch her (and her brother Chase who plays for Minor Atom AA) and for that hour it is so worth it all.

Double gold for Smith family

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2012 FIRST EDITION PUBLISHERS

Submitted by KMHA It’s not often that your child has the opportunity to play in a provincial championship, let alone win a provincial gold. How about having two children playing in provincial championships and helping to coach both to gold medal wins? For Daryll Smith and his children, Rachael of the Lady Rangers Midget B team and Marcus of the Jr. Rangers Minor Midget MD Red, that’s exactly what happened last season. Although the rinks were miles apart, the same day yielded the same result – provincial gold. As for their dad, it was a bitter-sweet weekend. As head coach for the Lady Rangers and assistant coach for the Jr. Rangers, it was a tremendously successful season for both. From tournament wins to divisional championships and provincial golds, it was a season to remember. Both teams worked incredibly hard throughout the season and certainly deserved to qualify for provincials,” said Daryll Smith.” “As we all know, once your there anything can happen.” For the Lady Rangers it was playing seven games over the weekend and beating six teams that they had previously lost too. For the Jr. Rangers it was a five-game weekend that ended with beating a tough St. Catharines team whom they had lost to all season, with the exception of the divisional finals. As their season kept pace with tournament and divisional wins, it was only fitting that the final scores of both provincial gold games was also the same, 1-0. “I am extremely proud of and happy for both Rach and Marcus,” said Daryll. “They maintained honours marks throughout a long season of hockey and achieved something in a provincial gold that eludes many players.” The proud parent and coach’s only regret of the season? “While I was extremely fortunate to have been part of two hard-working teams with two great coaching staffs, championships are so rare and I just wish I could have been in both rinks at once.

Welcome Message

from the Board of Directors The wind has begun to feel a chill and the summer sun has drawn more quickly into night, bringing with it the end of summer but also the sounds of the rink. The familiar beck and call of friends “Pass the puck I’m open . . .” and the laughter from the dressing room. Hockey season is here and we are proud to launch another edition of KMHA’s corporate magazine. This year you will notice a new look and a new feel. The name has changed and we are moving forward with the HockeyXpress brand. Circulation will increase and the magazine will be featured more prominently across the entire community. Included will be the same friendly articles written by KMHA volunteers as well as mementos and keepsakes for our players and their families. Our board of directors would like to thank you again for your tremendous commitment to the best game on ice. As parents and volunteers we work endlessly to ensure that the experience for our children is a happy one filled with fun, friends and excitement. We invite you to the rink to watch what our players have to offer and to enjoy yourself in the contagious spirit that they bring. Whether you play AAA or are in Hockey Beginnings it is the wide-eyed enthusiasm that makes hockey the backbone of minor sport in our community. As president I would like to address some of the items we have and will work on this season. The KMHA board has identified the need for renewed energy to be expended into the development of our hockey players. As such we have begun the creation of a volunteer driven committee designed to look at all levels in our programs and build the capacity for greatness. This process must be open and forward thinking. To date we have held several meetings with members of our hockey community that have expressed an interest in the development of our hockey players. If you have an interest please send your name to Rolland Cyr (our general manager) at rollandc@kitchenerminorhockey.com. He will record your name and forward you to the appropriate contact on the committee. Please read the article later in this edition to get more details about this committee. Over the last several years we have been working with the City of Kitchener regarding our grant and the level of support that we see from our municipality. Our committee comprised of both City and KMHA members continues to make strides toward a result that will see the cost of hockey in this community come in line with our surrounding neighbours. Please keep an eye on our website for future updates. To coincide with this request KMHA will also produce graphs of our fees that will be displayed on our website explaining the breakdown of our fees at each age group. To support further transparency, KMHA will also post their monthly executive minutes for our members to see. They will be found under the about us section of our website. With those projects on the go we wish you a safe and fun hockey season and remind you that we play Canada’s game and we play it for life. Yours in Hockey Tom Graham President

sportsfiles The development of a hockey player . . . By Kitchener Minor Hockey Association Is a puzzle that changes and grows with the game. KMHA has led in this field in its history and are making every effort to return there in the future. This year, KMHA has begun a new committee designed around making our players and coaches better at all levels and returning Kitchener to the top of the Canadian leaderboard in community hockey. To effectively return to such heights, we are building on the foundations created by past hockey development staff and volunteers. We will be utilizing more help and input to develop five core programs that will dovetail with one another to provide a system-wide plan for excellence. A small steering committee started by identifying the five core programs that require attention. Once the 5 CP’s were identified, the steering committee held public meetings with KMHA members that have expressed an interest in assisting in the development of our boys and girls. At these public meetings the basis for a process to achieve our developmen-

tal goals was laid out. KMHA will involve five committees to look at development in the following 5 Core Programs. 1. Hockey Beginnings: this includes KMHA’s learn to skate, learn to play programs and the Lady Ranger Rookies. These programs are seen as the gateway to hockey in our community and need to be engaging as well as educational. Currently they are offered at fantastic prices and provide a place for kids to start in an educational way. The committee overseeing these programs will design and implement plans that will teach correctly the proper techniques for growing into great hockey players. Ages 3 - 12 2. I.P. (Introductory Program): this is the introduction program as identified by Hockey Canada and comprises players aged 5 – 8 in a league environment. The committee overseeing this group will work on how we best create our teams, imple- ment fair and educational practices, as well

KMHA will continue to build our plan and work with interested and skilled volunteers to achieve our goals. If you have any interest in assisting with these committees please reach out to rollandc@kitchenerminorhockey with your name and contact information.

as grow player and coaching talent to feed future rep programs. House league: the development group for this program will examine the number of practices, practice plans and progressive teaching tools that build to create the skills a player will need to achieve their own goals while playing the sport for life. This committee will have to design plans that consider late entry participants that wish to learn and develop. Rep Hockey: is the elite branch of hockey programming that works to create the most talented hockey players it can. The group working on this committee will be required to develop a progressive plan for develop- ment that takes into consideration both long-term athlete development, along with fostering a love for the game. Solid performance measures will help to determine our success. Coach Training: the last group will look to design a plan for selecting and training our coaches. The plan will need to include goals and innovative solutions for conveying modern and cutting-edge teaching tech- niques as well as game theory and strategies.

KMHA alum Mark Scheifele takes his game to the NHL By Ryan Metivier • Photo courtesy of Terry Wilson/OHL images When the Winnipeg Jets made their triumphant return to the NHL last year and stepped up to the podium at the NHL Draft to make the club’s first-ever selection, they chose none other than KMHA graduate Mark Scheifele. Scheifele, the Kitchener-born centre, was the 2011 NHL Draft’s seventh overall pick, and wasted little time in getting a taste for the big leagues. He quickly signed his first contract with the Jets and appeared in seven regular season games, scoring one goal. “It was an unbelievable feeling to get drafted to the NHL, sign my first contract, actually play in a game and score my first goal,” said Scheifele. “These are things you’ll always remember. They’re all really huge experiences and memories that I’ll have, and they all happened in such a short period of time. It will

stick,” he added. Getting that experience gave him the knowledge of what he needed to work on to “stick” in the NHL. So what did Mark work on in the offseason to prepare himself for another crack at the Jets’ roster when the NHL decides to reopen its doors for business from the lockout? “My physical maturity by working to get a lot stronger,” he said. It also included simply taking the time to hone his skills and working every day to improve every little part of his game. With NHL players currently locked out, Scheifele has taken his game back to the OHL and the Barrie Colts, where he’s often given the opportunity to hone his skills against fellow KMHA alum, Mitchell Theoret, also a 2011 NHL draftee with the New York Islanders. Theoret is a member

There’s obviously been numerous coaches throughout the years who’ve helped to mould Mark’s game, but one that stood out was Todd Hoffman who coached Scheifele in minor midget and also the following year in Jr. B with the Kitchener Dutchmen. “He’s my most memorable coach and he taught me a lot. He helped me with my game and is probably the best coach I had.” It’s still early in Scheifele’s NHL career but many of the relationships and experiences he had during his earlier years in Kitchener have definitely helped shape him into the player he is today. “One of my favourite memories was a tournament we went down to in Detroit, probably in my minor bantam year,” he said. “We went to the finals at Joe Louis Arena and as a kid I was always a Detroit Red Wings fan so it was pretty big to play in that arena. We ended up losing in a shootout, but I scored a goal in the shootout and it was a pretty memorable experience for me.” It’s those experiences, and also all the coaching advice he received from his Kitchener coaches that Scheifele still remembers so fondly today. “Those were the years I was learning to play the game from the coaches and developing such good friendships,” he said. “We had some good teams and my last year we had a really good team. I think that was probably the biggest learning tool for me that last year when we went far. Those are all the kinds of memories and experiences that you had that you still remember today.”

“It was an unbelievable feeling to get drafted to the NHL, sign my first contract, actually play in a game and score my first goal. ” definitely be a year that I’ll remember.” Growing up right here in Kitchener, Scheifele played his minor hockey in the KMHA all the way from seven-years-old in tyke, up until he was 15 in minor midget. Hockey was one of his first loves in life back when he was playing mini sticks and learning and to skate on the pond with his father and older brother. That love is still burning deep as he’s now had a taste of the sport at the highest level and is working on bringing his game to the next level. “Everything is different in the NHL,” Scheifele exclaimed when commenting on his time in bigs. “The speed of the players, the strength of the players, the intelligence of everyone. Everyone is at such a high level there and you can’t pick on any weaknesses. You really have to work your hardest to get there and do whatever it takes while you’re there to

of Barrie’s divisional rivals the Niagara IceDogs, and played with Scheifele during their days in Kitchener Minor Hockey. “There’s a few guys I still keep in touch with from my days in Kitchener, but probably the guy I keep in touch with the most is Mitch,” said Scheifele. “Me and him still talk and he’s still a good friend of mine. It’s cool to play against him now when he’s playing in Niagara and me with Barrie.” As is the case with most hockey players, the list of people to thank for helping them get to where they are is endless, and Mark was quick to sing the praises of his parents, Brad and Mary Lou, for all the sacrifices they made in taking him to practices, buying his equipment and paying for his hockey. “They did everything for me and I can’t thank them enough. They’ve done so much for me so you just have to keep giving back to them.”

Boys 2012/13 Rep Program Update By Greg Blundel, Director, and HockeyXpress Team The season is well under way and there are many things to look forward to in the boy’s rep program. The program would like to extend a warm welcome to a new coach, Fred Gregory, who has taken over the Atom AAA team. Gregory joins the KMHA from a Cambridge centre and has already put his stamp on a team that struggled with two wins last season. Though the year is still young, they’ve already surpassed that total and this is a team definitely on the upswing. They’ve made a few changes in the offseason and with the addition of Gregory behind the bench it looks like they’re going to be a team to watch out for, both in the regular season and in the Oktoberfest tournament. We’d also like to send our luck to all of our Kitchener atom teams participating in the tournament, including Jason Mooney’s A team who should be a strong contender this year, Rob Kliewer’s MD Red team and Darrin Stasso’s MD Blues.

Last season the KMHA and boy’s rep program was proud to see four of their own drafted to the OHL and we hope for similar success this year. Last year’s draftees included: • Luke Gazzola – Local player – Drafted to Mississauga • Jarrett Parker – Local player – Drafted to Oshawa • Ryan Hergott – Import from Waterloo – Goalie – Drafted to Sarnia • Brad Yowart – Import from Guelph – Player – Drafted to Oshawa One big change this season is that we’ve now opened our centre up to players in New Hamburg to be able to play at our AAA level, as they’re an OMHA centre, but didn’t have a AAA level to play in. The other positive of this move is that we won’t be limiting the amount of New Hamburg players per teams, as they will not be considered imports. This will allow kids from that area to pursue AAA hockey in Kitchener if they choose.

We’re also proud to once again be hooked up with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers who sponsor all of our rep teams. Rangers’ assistant coach Troy Smith has set up a mentoring program between all of our rep coaches, other junior teams and coaches from Laurier and the University of Waterloo, which is a great learning experience for everyone involved. Looking ahead and past the Oktoberfest tournament, which will be great experience for all of our teams, especially with Bauer back on board as a sponsor, all of our teams are signed up for our annual Blueline tournament in November. This year we have moved the date slightly to accommodate U.S. based teams who aren’t able to travel during American Thanksgiving. We’re also looking forward to running our 24 Hour Hockey Event once again in 2013, which raises money for St. Mary’s Hospital. Best of luck to all of our boys this year!

Positive strides By Jarid Peterson, GM Kitchener Lady Rangers Atom B For the first time, this year, KMHA will be inviting female participants for atom-aged teams for their 39th Annual Kitchener Oktoberfest Tournament and the significance is not lost on the staff of the Atom B Lady Rangers. The team’s head coach Julie Hatesohl and her assistant coaches Katie Ehrlich and Brooke Penticost, all former skaters for various Lady Ranger Teams have up until now, viewed this event from the outside looking in. Joining these three young women is team trainer Erika Paling and 16 very excited and motivated nine and 10-year-old girls from the four corners of our city. Although an entire female bench staff is not a new thing, however rare, this particular bench staff is a full product of KMHA’s Kitchener Lady Ranger program. All three coaches are graduates and former players who have chosen to give back some of the time and education that was given to them. As women’s hockey continues to evolve, so too do the ideas and motivation to make it the best it can be. Being able to recruit homegrown talent for

8

HockeyXpress

coaching positions is an important milestone for KMHA. Not only do these young women live and breathe hockey, they do so wearing the colours of the center that helped raise them. They bring with them an understanding of how girls see and play this game, why they play it and what they hope to get out of it. They themselves have become positive female role models for all the girls in Kitchener hockey. Beyond coaching hockey and her day job as a teacher with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, Hatesohl also works with girl’s rugby and fastball, filling her schedule with as many leadership and educational situations as possible. Team trainer Paling is using this season as a stepping stone into the world of girl’s hockey and is a nursing student by day and energized with the opportunity to inspire. “I felt that it was an excellent way to get involved with the community, and have a positive influence of some of the younger girls in the community,” she said. “I always want to see the girls having fun at hockey, but at the same time being disciplined and working hard”

(From l-r) Brooke Penticost, Erika Paling, Julie Hatesohl and Katie Ehrlich

The bench staff ’s enthusiasm has not been lost on the players themselves who seem energized and very eager to learn, showing up for early morning practices with smiles and determination. Making new friends is not easy, yet somehow this early in the season, sing-offs and dance-offs can be heard down the halls of their rink from 16 girls who have one common goal of having fun and playing hockey. What better way to do that than with four great role models and even more, four inspiring life coaches. Best of luck to all 20 young women who share the common bond of hockey and whose inspired play will thrill the audiences of the 39th Annual Kitchener Oktoberfest Atom Tournament.

Girls rep program update By Yvan Aubin Fifteen Kitchener Lady Rangers’ teams have taken to the ice for the 2012 – 2013 season. Last season saw us take home the provincial championship in the Midget B division, and teams are again poised to compete for gold once again. Teams will participate in the annual FallFest Tournament in November, as well as our second annual Kitchener Girls’ Hockey Day on January 13, 2013.

“As many of these girls attend college or university and work as well, they keep themselves extremely busy as they try to fit in a very hectic schedule. Most of the girls have been a part of Lady Ranger hockey for many years, but there are also a few new faces to the association who are a welcomed addition to the team. ” The Novice B team has a new crew of freshly minded Lady Rangers added to the squad, led by Cam Beaupre. These girls are just beginning their rep hockey journey which will hopefully be a long and successful one. Our atom division has two new sets of coaches; one making the jump from boy’s hockey in Kevin Hilgartner who is coaching the A team, and one taking her first head coaching job in Julie Hatesohl who is coaching the B team. Our Peewee A team looks to build on pre-season success led by Doug Carmichael, who has a strong team of players looking to make a statement. The Peewee BB team is a younger crew eager to come together as a team for coach Greg Schneider. Many of these girls have memories of tournament and provincial success in years past, and want that taste of glory again. Head coach, Mike CInelli, is looking forward to a competitive season once again with a positive return of ladies for the coming season. The senior team is for ladies over the age of 21 who still have the love of the game

to the association who are a welcomed addition to the team. Midget AA with Chad Campbell as the head coach has had a few month head start on his program. Many KMHA players are on this team as well with a few new faces to help them compete. Troy Ferguson is back as a head coach for the Midget BB program this year. As last year’s Peewee AA coach, Troy is bringing his many years of coaching experience to a team that he had helped out with in the prior year. Troy has a good group of girls and plans on being very competitive this season. The Midget B team, coached by former KLR director, Mike Richmond, is anticipating a very busy season. There are several returnees as well as a few who have made the jump to the higher level. Mike is also welcoming a former boy’s league player on his team. A quick decision to ice a fourth midget team has resulted in George Bottineau stepping up as the head coach this season. George was an assistant coach on this team last year, working closely with Tim MacKay. This team will be in tough this year as they

compete in a ‘B’ loop for their LLFHL season. As the only girl’s coach to win a provincial championship last year, Daryll Smith is using his excellent hockey knowledge to guide the Bantam AA team to a successful season this year. As one of the few ‘non-parent’ coaches, Daryll has taken on a new-look team in his bid for another provincial gold. Jeff Miller is returning as the Bantam A head coach for the coming season. Jeff ’s team did well last year and he is counting on his returning players to step up and lead by example as he drives his team towards the Provincials. Jeff was well liked by his players last year and will be counting on this again as he competes at the second highest bantam level again this season. Bantam B coach, Dan Tsandel is, is new as the head coach for the coming season. Dan has very good hockey knowledge that will be very beneficial to his team this season. While trying to qualify for provincials this season, Dan is also focusing his efforts on player and skill development this season, which will help the girls going forward in their Kitchener Lady Ranger careers.

WELCOME

Welcome to the 39th Kitchener Oktoberfest Tournament It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Kitchener, home of the second largest Bavarian festival in the world. Together we celebrate in the spirit of gemutlichkeit, honouring the German heritage of our region in our uniquely Canadian way. We play hockey! Gemulichkeit is a spirit of brotherhood or friendliness and we share it through hockey as we play for fun, friendship and bragging rights. The Kitchener Oktoberfest tournament has engendered this spirit for 39 years and this season we continue to build on its great tradition. This year we present to you two amazing events in the Bauer Experience (an interactive fun centre) and a hockey seminar/tips from the Team Canada World Jr. Coach Steve Spott. You will be able to find the Bauer experience at the Activa Sportsplex on the Saturday of the tournament, and you will find Steve Spott’s seminar at the Family and Children’s Services (FACs) building located one block from the Activa Sportsplex on Saturday Morning at 10:30 a.m. Maps are available at the Activa Sportsplex. With those details out of the way I encourage you to take advantage of this community’s hospitality, play with the spirit of Gemutlichkeit, and enjoy your stay. Good luck, play fair and have fun.

What does it take to lead your team to victory? Be sure to come down to Family and Children’s Services at 10:30 a.m on Saturday, October 20 to hear first-hand advice from Kitchener Rangers’ head coach and general manager and new Team Canada World Junior coach Steve Spott. Spott coached at the NCAA, OCAA, ECHL,

and AHL levels prior to landing his first OHL job with the Plymouth Whalers in 1997 as their assistant coach. In 2001 he joined the Kitchener Rangers as assistant coach, before taking over the head coaching role in the 2008/09 season, where he has led the club to the playoffs each of the past three seasons, including two trips to the conference finals.

This year, Spott will add the impressive title of head coach of Canada’s World Junior club to his resume when he travels to Ufa, Russia to try and bring a gold medal back home to Canada. Spott will be on hand to talk to players, coaches and parents about his coaching philosophies and what it takes to bring your team to the next level.

New products from Bauer Hockey SportsXpress interviews with Lauren Ostrom, Bauer Global Brand manager

The RE-AKT helmet How long has the helmet been in development? What kind of research went into developing the Bauer RE-AKT helmet? The Bauer RE-AKT helmet has been in development for more than two years. Over that time, Bauer Hockey utilized the latest biomechanical and medical research to better understand the factors that contribute to head injuries. As the leader in helmet technology with more than 84 years of experience in developing hockey equipment, Bauer has been focused on developing a revolutionary helmet grounded in science to help protect those who play the sport. What goals did you have in mind\when you set out to develop the Bauer RE-AKT? Our goal was to create the first hockey helmet designed to manage rotational impact forces and provide protection against the multiple types of hits in hockey. The RE-AKT helmet

features Bauer’s proprietary Suspend-Tech Liner, which allows the helmet to move independently from the head during angular impacts to help better manage rotational forces. The Suspend-Tech Liner, as well as strategically placed foam pads in the RE-AKT helmet, is made of exclusive PORON® XRDTM Extreme Impact Protection, a super-lightweight pliable material with the ability to dissipate extreme force impacts. The free-floating stretchable liner moves independently from the rest of the helmet, thereby better managing rotational forces. The RE-AKT helmet also features Vertex foam, a proprietary Bauer foam that provides enhanced impact management compare to traditional EPP foams found in most hockey helmets. Did Bauer work with any doctors or industry experts to better understand what causes

concussions to help them determine what types of protection For the full story needs to be waterloosportsxpress.ca included in the helmet to help prevent this type of injury? The Bauer Safety Panel allows us to connect with leaders of the medical community like Dr. Mark Lovell, founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Sports Medicine Concussion Program. Formed in 2010, the panel was initiated in an effort to strengthen communication surrounding safety issues such as concussion awareness and management, and injury prevention. The safety panel also includes representatives from Bauer Hockey, USA Hockey and Hockey Canada.

More money for KSA means more grants over larger area By SportsXpress Team • Photo by Gord Dearborn It’s often been stated that, “As go the Rangers, so goes the KSA funding for local minor sports programs.” (KSA raises most of revenue through sales of 50/50 draw tickets at home games of the OHL Kitchener Rangers). With the addition of almost 1,000 seats at the Kitchener Auditorium, additional 50/50 ticket sellers and entertaining on-ice performances by the Rangers coupled (hopefully) with a decent playoff run, administrators are hoping for a banner year of 50/50 sales – and lots of funding for local minor athletes and sports groups.

More scholarships Opening up the residency requirement to the larger geographical area will affect the KSA Scholarship Program the most so it’s very likely that the number of scholarships available for 2013 will be increased. Details on a revamped Scholarship Program are expected to be finalized shortly. Deadline for applications will be in late April.

Enhanced programs Larger geographical area At KSA’s September dinner meeting, members approved a recommendation from the KSA Operating Committee that the residency requirement for grants for all KSA programs be expanded to include residents of the City of Waterloo and the Townships of Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich as well as the City of Kitchener. This change not only standardizes the residency criteria for all KSA grant programs but also formally acknowledges the fact that most local minor sports groups operate across municipal boundaries. KSA’s expanded geographical area is also now in line with that of the Athlete of the Year program (which KSA has agreed to host again), the K-W Community Foundation (which administers

A program is also in the works to fill the void left with the decision to drop the KSA Olympic Dreams Program. Members are working on finalizing details on a program which would accept applications from athletes competing at the highest levels in all sports rather than just ones recognized by the Olympic Committee. Refer to the KSA website (www.kitchenersports.ca) for updated information. Note: The KSA website itself is also currently under a complete overhaul. It promises to be a busy year for KSA as all the changes are implemented. On behalf of local minor athletes and sports groups, we thank you for your continued support of our 50/50 draw and invite you to come out and join us at one of our KSA dinners.

Edelweiss Sports Bar & Grill Social at 6:00 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Cost per dinner is $25 ($10 for ages 12 and under) except for the Volunteer Dinner ($30)

At KSA’s October “Hockey Night” dinner with Rangers GM/Coach Steve Spott, KSA contributed $2,500 to the Donna’s Kids Program. This KMHA program, initiated by the late Donna Weber, was established to ensure that every child desiring to play hockey has that opportunity regardless of his/her family’s financial status. Donna’s Kids, with a budgeted target of $125,000 this season, will provide assistance to over 140 players. KSA is proud to be an ongoing supporter of this program.

New bench boss for midget girls By Ryan Metivier • Photos by Kitchener Lady Rangers

Alyssa Chiarello

What a difference a year makes. It was only last season that Chad Campbell was no more than an enthusiastic parent in the stands, cheering on his daughter, Tailor, a thenmember of the Kitchener Lady Rangers Midget AA team. Fast forward a season later, and Campbell, a man of 18 years of coaching experience in the KMHA and OMHA in nearly every level of hockey besides midget girls, was approached to he the head coach of KMHA’s top-level girls’ team. “I thought this would be a good opportunity,” said Campbell. “You never know what comes from year-to-year and it’s always a different challenge.”

Karleigh Herd

throughout the club. “It’s hard to miss a leader like that, but she’s been dedicated and has come to every game,” said the head coach. “She’s been helping out in the dressing room where she can by working with the younger girls to get them into their routines.” Some of those young players include new additions and under-agers Reagan Subban on defense from Cambridge, and Alyssa Chiarello on forward from the Kitchener Bantam AA team. Alyssa will be joining her older sister Amanda, who Campbell notes as a key returning player who was among the team’s leading scorers last season. Also returning are both goaltenders, Amanda Gans and Rebecca

“You never know what comes from year-toyear and it’s always a different challenge.” Though his daughter has since moved on from the team to a prep school in Pennsylvania, accounting for one of the four 96s to graduate from the club, Campbell has inherited a club full of enthusiasm and leadership. When speaking of leadership, you can look no further than team captain, Karleigh Herd, who’s returning from a devastating injury suffered last season, where she broke her back. Campbell has been easing her back into the lineup to begin the season, with only six shifts per game, but her presence has been felt

Dietrich (both 96s), giving Campbell a solid veteran tandem to turn to in net. Behind the bench, there are a few more new faces besides just the head coach as well. Tracy Logan, who played intermediate AA before going on to play at Mercyhurst, has come on board, as well as Campbell’s brother-in-law, Rob Burr, who brings his past experience coaching at the University of Waterloo to the forward unit. Mike Simons also returns to run the defense and rounding out the staff is first-year trainer Carol Hertel, who has made the conditioning of the girls her own project and it’s starting to show on and off the ice. Hertel has started doing a two kilometer run with the team before each practice as well as a variety of stretching and quick feet exercises. “As a coaching staff, we’re confident that we can guide them and teach them to whatever needs to be done on the ice and help them learn and development for the future.” The team has already participated in one tournament this season, reaching the quarterfinals in the B Division of the Stoney Creek Midget AA Showcase Tournament, which was highlighted by a shootout win over cross-town rivals Waterloo. Campbell will be looking to build off of that early success in future tournaments and throughout the rest of the regular season. “We want to showcase the girls to universities and colleges and give them an opportunity to attend a Canadian school in CIS or an American school in Division 1 or 3,” he said. “My goal is to get the girls out there as much as possible so they can be seen by scouts and coaches.”

Big goals for Midget AAA team By Matthew Desmeules Much optimism surrounds this year’s squad with an entirely new coaching staff behind the bench looking to improve on the team’s ninth-place finish last season. Team captain Alex Demrovsky returns along with assistants Kalob Witzell and Anthony Osterling to lead a competitive group of 96s who are coming off a strong finish to their minor midget season. The group includes two players selected in this past spring’s OHL draft in Jarret Parker (Oshawa) and Luke Gazzola (Mississauga). In goal, Tanner Topham is joined by Evan Wigmore giving the Rangers one of the strongest goaltending tandems in the league. The blue line is bolstered by the return of Jacob Norcott and Logan Schmidt. The quick and talented defense corps, is rounded out by Ben Holowaty, Evan Uba, Taite Wirshcke, and Witzell.

Up front the speedy and hardworking forwards joining Demrovsky and Osterling on the attack are assistant captain Connor Cole, Connor Bodnar, Evan Flanagan, Spencer Grisold, Eric Heffernan, Todd Hodder, Austin Kovrig, Kevin Nogueira, Gazzola and Parker. The team will be competing in the Gold Puck, Drummondville International and our very own Blueline tournaments in addition to their regular Alliance play. Playing out of the Activa Sportsplex where the team is headquartered and has its own

club room, the season is off to a good start. The midgets closed out September with a record of 2-0-0 and are looking to carry that momentum and strong play into the rest of the season.
